The Bridge at Jackson’s Boat of the thirsty spectators, who might also use the bridge to escape into Cheshire should the authorities turn up to affect arrests.

It is familiar enough picture of the bridge over the Mersey and the caption records “Looking down Rifle Road from the footbridge after the gate had been removed and the toll abolished.” Now there is no date on the photograph but the reference to the abolition of the toll must place it sometime in the late 1940s, although I don’t have an exact year. The right to charge goes back to before there was a bridge, when anyone wanting to cross the bridge at this point had to be ferried across by row boat, and as late as the 1830s long after the first wooden bridge had been erected the landlord of the pub retained the right to charge a fee to take people. It was the enterprising Sam Wilton sometime publican who built the first wooden bridge in 1818 with a mind no doubt to cash in on the illegal sport of prize fighting which attracted huge crowds and took place on the meadows. His pub was well placed to benefit from the trade

‘And so it was that in the summer of 1848 Samuel Warburton was twenty minutes into a fight watched by two to three hundred spectators when the police turned up. They had been alerted by Samuel Dean of Barlow Farm who had been alarmed at such a large gathering at 5.30 on a Sunday morning. The crowd and the boxers duly escaped but a little after seven the same morning Samuel was arrested in the Horse and Jockey. PC Wynstanley who had led his force of seven police officers to the fight had “changed my Clothes and pursued the Parties and the Prisoner I apprehended in a Public House, the Horse and Jockey in Chorlton cum Hardy about 7 o’clock yesterday morning. I told him that he was charged with being one of the Combatants and he said that he was not. There were bruises upon his face and lips and blood flowing from some of them.” The following day Samuel went before the magistrate at the New Bailey Court House in Salford and was found guilty on the evidence of Wynstanley, Samuel Dean and John Davies who had witnessed a policeman fighting with another man. But despite being found guilty Samuel was discharged on sureties. He was just 18 and it begs the question of how he could afford to put the money up, but if he was a prize fighter he may well have money of his

own or was bankrolled by his sponsor. And during the evening after the dramatic arrest at the Horse and Jockey there may have been some who wanted to talk about another local or near local prize fighter. This was Ned Painter who had been born in 1784 in Stretford and went on to become famous before retiring to run a pub in Norwich. In his heyday he had fought some of the best. In 1818 he went 31 rounds with Tom Spring. During the first Painter was hit on the side of the throat and went down hitting his head and shoulder on a stake holding the ring together. Despite this he fought another 30 rounds before succumbing and in the 42 round re match it was Painter who seriously damaged his opponent by opening a gash over his eye. The connection was much closer because Painter’s father John was a butcher who had moved to Chorlton lived at the top of the Row where later John Holt built his home.’*

Bramble Ramblings It’s that season. The time of year Chorlton natives don short skirts, short sleeve shirts, shorts and sandals and other semi naked apparel; they dodge and weave through nettles, thorns, thistles and droves of nibbling insects that abound in the Hardy this time of year, to….um, pick a small… blackberry. They carry an assortment of vessels; baskets, bins, bags, pots, tubs, cups, clever hats and posh punnets and come back in various conditions, brimming

with berries, scratches, bites and bearing smiles, many smeared and stained with the spoils of the pick.

The bramble, with it’s proud summer growth in great arches spidering across the green and lush landscape is a winter wonder which abounds with bountiful blooms – pink to white, much favoured by bees and such like. The blooms taper back in a sort of long cone. The first flower blooms at the tip and the berry at the tip is the first to ripen. It’s

usually the biggest and fruitiest. The ‘Queensberry’ – prized by seasoned pickers. The art of berry picking relies on a good eye and a sensitive touch. Ripe berries for immediate eating have a slight matt appearance and should look plump, unblemished and are a less uniform shape. If it’s ripe, a berry will come away with the gentlest of finger tugs. Other berries will be tarter, but will ripen off the bush, keep well and are good for cooking with tart apples – which are also plentiful on the Hardy this year. Pies, jam, juices and ahh… tarts! Beware – some of your pickings are note quite…vegan. Fruit fly larvae occasionally make their homes between the berries. A good soaking will remedy this if you are a sensitive soul.

© Can Stock Photo Inc./nightfrost

For younger pickers a good hat, thickish trousers, sensible footwear, long sleeves and perhaps even thin cotton gloves are good advice. An older picker companion is also useful to bring along – they can often be persuaded to carry stuff, including your stash of berries. Enjoy the seasonal bounty! A Chorlton Wanderer

Magic Moments This has to be the strangest assignment I've been given to date. ‘Fancy writing about a magician?’ The editor asks. Sure, I say, glad of the work. It isn't until I go away and think about it that I start to wonder what I've let myself in for. A magician? What sort of magician? Will he hypnotize me? Saw me in half? What if he's an evil magician, with a black cape and a goatee beard, hell-bent on taking over the world? I've met that kind before.

I needn't have worried. When we meet at a local bar, Frank Farrell - aka Magic Frank - turns out to be an ebullient, dapper man with a mischievous glint in his eye. No cape. No goatee beard. No designs on world domination. At least, none that he admits to. A teacher by day, he exudes confidence and trust – qualities as necessary for performing magic as they are in the classroom. Indeed, I'm so much under his spell I have the overwhelming compunction to admit that I haven't a clue how to write this piece. Professional? I don't know the meaning of the word. Thankfully, the same can't be said for Frank: "Perhaps if I show you what I'm about…" As he entertains and bamboozles me with a deck of cards (and no, I can't figure out how he does it), I ask Frank how he first got into magic. He smiles enigmatically. "It was twenty years ago… in India." With bated breath, I'm expecting to hear a dark, mystical tale of a young boy brought up by fakirs and schooled in the Indian rope trick. But no; nothing so fanciful. "I was on holiday with my wife and watched her perform a trick for some of the local children. The look on their faces… After that, I bought a how-to book, learnt a few card tricks… "

Leon Horton

And it's precisely that - card tricks - that Frank brings to the table. "Close-up magic is the really difficult thing; no camera tricks or stooges in the audience. What the Victorians called 'parlour magic.'" He illustrates his point by getting me to sign a particular card, one he can't see. I swear that card never leaves my sight - and yet somehow, there it is, back in the deck. Frank doesn't make people disappear. Or cut an assistant in two. He doesn't pull rabbits from hats or doves from under handkerchiefs. And surprisingly, for a teacher, he doesn't do kids' birthdays. So what does he do? "I've done adult birthday parties. Entertained in peoples' homes. Weddings, community groups… I guess the most unusual gig I've done was a bar mitzvah." Putting my pen aside, we spend the next few hours chatting. I'm enjoying myself so much I almost forget this is meant to be work. And unlike work, it's over all too soon. As the sun slowly sets and we prepare to part, I ask the question that no selfrespecting magician would ever answer. "How about revealing some tricks of the trade?" Frank fixes me with a look. "They say there are only seven or eight tricks in the world," he says. And with that … he disappears. Postscript: an hour or two later, I get a text from Frank thanking me for an enjoyable time and suggesting a title for the article 'Local Magician Makes Afternoon Disappear.' It's a good one, better than I've come up with, but I'm not sure I can get away with using the word disappear again. To book Frank for your party, wedding or, yes, even your bar mitzvah you can visit his website at www.magicfrank.co.uk or call 0161 860 7978 or 07981853155.

Book Reviews from Chorlton Bookshop friend avoiding her? Is it a secret involving Roux , the love of her life who seems to be slipping further and further away. For fans of Joanne Harris this is such a treat. Although still in hardback I found it impossible to wait for the paperback to catch up with this magical family.

can trust from the whole host of characters he meets who are also living a life unnoticed by normal society. Although not the best book he has written this is definitely worth the time to give it a read. If you enjoy this then “Restless” also by William Boyd would appeal to you too.

Ordinary Thunderstorms William Boyd

The Yoga Ogre Peter Bently & Simon Rickerty

William Boyd is a master storyteller who has produced an incredibly diverse collection of work. This new novel is a page turner of a thriller which will keep you hooked to the end. Adam Kindred is a climatologist who is keen to start a new life back in the UK, following marriage problems. After completing a successful interview with a top University Adam has a chance meeting which completely alters the course of his new life. Wrongly accused of a brutal murder Adam is forced to go on the run knowing he is being hunted not only by the Police but by a professional hit-man. Uncovering a scandal involving a major pharmaceutical company Adam is forced to live completely under the radar, not able to use bank accounts or mobile phones. Stranded without money or food he survives by learning who he

Sometimes picture-books can risk being formulaic: the same old parade of ingredients shuffled into a different order. But surely it’s safe to say that no-one’s ever written one about an ogre on a health kick before. His name’s Ogden and he’s a friendly sort, despite the lime-green complexion and massive bulk. In fact, it’s the bulk that’s the problem. One day, fed up with his rotund physique, Ogden embarks on a quest for the perfect activity to get him trim. He causes chaos around town trying out basketball, football, golf and hockey, thundering about town and accidentally destroying everything in sight. No prizes for guessing what he tries next. But there’s nothing earnest or instructive here: it’s a riot of bold, colourful illustrations allied to genuinely rib-tickling rhymes, and it’s just tremendous fun. Suitable for ages 0-4 years.

Peaches for Monsieur Le Cure Joanne Harris This is the third book in a series which began with “Chocolat”. Once again the story features Vianne and her colourful family. Following a letter from “Beyond the Grave”, Vianne rushes back to where it all began in the village of Lansquenet. Putting her relationship in jeopardy, she returns to a very different village where all is definitely not well. Lansquenet has always been the unlikely home to newcomers, some less welcome than others. The village has now become home to a mainly Muslim, North African community. Although initially welcoming and friendly with each other, tensions have arisen between the groups following the arrival of a mysterious woman in a niqab. Surprisingly, Vianne’s old adversary Reynaud the priest has been working hard to bring the two communities together. Despite his best efforts somebody is determined to destroy the priest and frame him for the seemingly racist attacks that have started to occur. Vianne once again uses her skills and powers to try and return calm to the village she used to call home. However she needs to mend old friendships first. Why is her old

Return to Saray It isn't every food critic who gets a second helping. Some of you may recall my review of Turkish restaurant Saray (see last December's edition of Community Index online), shortly after it opened in November 2011. I returned to catch up with Duran Selvi, proprietor and genial host of Saray, as I indulge myself in the Early Bird Special (two courses from the à la carte menu for £9.95). Duran's background is a fascinating one; with food clearly in his blood. Over a glass of Efes, a Turkish beer, I learn of his upbringing in Kapadokya (or Capadocia) in Central Anatolia, where he learnt his trade in the family-run business. As a young man, he went to Germany expanding his culinary passions in his brothers' restaurants - before moving to Britain in 2000. The next five-and-a-half years, he worked as a chef at the renowned Topaki Palace on Deansgate. As my choice of starter (Muska Borek – deep fried filo pastries, filled with feta cheese, parsley and a hint of garlic) is brought to the table, Duran talks

Leon Horton

proudly about opening his first restaurant, The Golden Plate in Marple, in 2005. Relishing the crispy parcels, I can only nod approvingly as he delights in telling me how this successful family venture is still going strong; and how his young son went on to win a competition as a junior chef. As I said, it's in the blood.

Moving to Chorlton, Duran opened Saray in November 2011. Stepping out of the kitchen into the limelight as front-of-house host, he continues to build on his experience in the business, whilst recognizing that a new restaurant needs time to develop its reputation: "Changing people's eating habits can be difficult but variety is the spice of life, and we should all try new things." With a wry sense of humour, he admits that some people think the restaurant is still an Italian. My main arrives. Lovingly prepared by chef Baran, Duran's talented brother-in-law, the Tavuc Güvec looks and tastes fantastic. Pieces of chicken breast, slowly casseroled in a rich and creamy wine sauce with mushrooms and green and yellow peppers, this mildly spicy dish melts in the mouth. Presented with a large plate of rice and fresh salad, it is quite simply delicious. But don't take my word for it. When Duran goes to welcome a party of newcomers, I take the opportunity to leaf through some of the many testimonials left by previous customers: "Good food, good atmosphere - friendly but unobtrusive staff. I always enjoy my visit, and the food never disappoints. Love it!" - Joanne. "A very nice meal and a relaxed atmosphere. I enjoyed the

background music too. Will recommend you to everyone." - Margaret. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: we're spoilt for choice when it comes to dining out in Chorlton. And of all the restaurants I've so far visited in the area, Saray – for it's fine cuisine, genuine hospitality and superlative dining experience – is far and away my favourite. Saray Café, Bar and Restaurant can be found at 609 Wilbraham Road, Chorlton. To book a table call 0161 881 8292.

September in your Garden Katherine Watson

September is the month that evokes a change in the year both literally, signifying the end of summer but also symbolically in folklore and religion where the bountiful harvests of the month are celebrated and stored for the coming winter. Perhaps one of the oldest and most nostalgic of British harvests is the September fruit – apples particularly, but pears and some plums too. The world of fruiting trees is a complex one with a variety of motorway-reminiscent rootstocks for apples (M26, M27); trendy foldaway bike rootstocks for plums (Brompton) and all manner of metrosexual pollinating habits, with many choosing to be self-fertile, a feat even we haven’t managed yet. Even small gardens can justify a cider press these days with smaller trees, fans and espaliers, cordons and standards all crashing onto the scene as we find new and inventive ways to train our fruit. Some good all round apple varieties are ‘Worcester Pearmain’, ‘Scrumptious’ and ‘James Grieve’ all of which are self-fertile (although they would all produce more fruit with an appropriate partner). The ‘Worcester Pearmain’ is a dessert apple with a hint of strawberry and ‘Scrumptious’ is a good fast growing tree that would be happy in a large pot in sun. ‘James Grieve’ is better known and a good all-rounder (eater, cooker, cider apple etc.)

particularly in Northern climbs. If you fancy a pear, and who doesn’t, the most popular continues to be ‘Conference’ as it will take shade – some nurseries even advocate a North facing wall – and is partially self-fertile. If you fancy growing a pear as an espalier or cordon, which means training the sideshoots against wires or trellis in lines which is both attractive and space-saving and allows more light to get to the fruit, ‘Concorde’ is a good choice. Some plums ripen in September and are good additions to the garden. ‘Mirabelle Golden Sphere’, a member of the damson family, produces golden plum-like fruit and is good for a small garden being slender and reasonably self-fertile. For a good cooking plum try ‘Marjories Seedling’ which is self-fertile and a later cropper than the traditional ‘Victoria’. Plums are also good trained as a fan; similar to an espalier but in a fan shape (nurseries will often provide a framework of canes with the shoots already tied in if you ask). As a rule, plums, cherries, peaches and apricots can all be trained as fans but not as espaliers and it is generally advised to position them against a south; south-east; or south-west wall, fence or trellis. Big Green Living Streets Are you interested in making Chorlton more pedestrian friendly, bike friendly and child friendly?

Then come along to a public meeting on Thursday 27th September at 7.30pm upstairs at the Lloyds pub on Wilbraham Rd. Green Chorlton, the organisers of Chorlton’s Big Green Festival, are starting up a new campaign called (provisionally) Big Green Living Streets. At the meeting, there’ll be a couple of short speeches to inspire but it will be mainly an opportunity for discussion leading to action. Our view is that turning the streets of Chorlton into living streets where cyclists, pedestrians and children feel safe is about more than just crossings, speed limits, lollipop people and speed humps though they are all important. It is about a change in the balance of rights of street users and about the whole street environment, about the pavement design, planting, ownership and responsibility, and beauty. Streets should connect the people and shops on either side rather than separate them. Pavements should be a pleasure to walk along rather than an obstacle course. Children should be able to walk to school without parents worrying. So far we have only begun the discussion that will continue on the 27th. Some of the ideas that we have discussed are: • Campaigning for reduction of speed limits to 20 mph and working with the 20’s plenty campaign. • Enhancing the great bar culture in Chorlton by asking bars to provide cycle racks and safe storage if cyclists have had too much to drink. • Launching a competition to design beautiful and practical bike racks. • Planting more fruit trees in streets. • Conducting street surveys to identify ways in which the environment could be improved. • Following the example of some other communities in Europe and the UK by removing the delineation between pavements and roads to increase respect and understanding between the different users and make the road into a shared space. • Increasing guerrilla planting and encourage people to adopt their streets. • Adapting to climate change in a creative and positive way by creating soakaways through

21

planting on the sides of roads thereby lessening danger of flooding.

• Creating an art/sculpture trail round Chorlton. These ideas are just a start and no decisions have been made about where to prioritise action.

Come along to the meeting at 7.30pm on Thursday 27th September and help to make Chorlton a friendlier, prettier and better place to be.

Didsbury Arts Festival Diamond Weekend A weekend showcasing the best of Didsbury Arts Festival will bring together new talent and old favourites from Thursday 27th to Sunday 30th September 2012. Featuring both new artists and highlights from the last four years of DAF, the DAF Diamond Weekend promises four days of festival fun for all the family - all taking place at Didsbury venues. This year’s packed programme will represent a huge range of arts from music, theatre, dance and comedy to visual arts, crafts, writing and film. Musical highlights include jazz and daily classical music recitals, including opera from students of the Royal Northern College of Music. Classical pianist, Kwang Ho Lee, makes a welcome return, following a sell-out performance at last year’s Festival. Meanwhile, classical music and dance combos, Flamenco de la Vuelta and the Frambuesas Tango Quartet, will add Latin fire to the proceedings. Storytelling and short fiction are given special focus in the literature programme with contributions from The War Tour writer, Zoe Lambert, Nightjar Press and – fresh from

Chorlton Arts Festival – FlashTag. Nationally acclaimed storytellers, Shonaleigh and Rogan Mills, will be working their magic and a bedtime story session at Didsbury Library will provide a special treat for the under-fives. Comedy highlights include stand-up and a comedy shorts film night which will bring to DAF for the first time the best of the Manchester Cofilmic Festival and the work of national, awardwinning film-makers. Meanwhile, the historic Old Parsonage, former home to famous Didsbury resident and philanthropist, Fletcher Moss, will be opening its doors for a photography exhibition, hosted by South Manchester Camera Club. This will be the first major event to take place at the Grade II listed building since its recent restoration and renaissance as a community hub, thanks to the efforts of Didsbury Civic Society and their supporters. Fletcher Moss Park will, as in previous years, be the main focus for the Festival’s outdoor events with plenty for children and adults to enjoy. Join the magical Evening Lantern Parade on Saturday night. Don’t forget to bring your own lantern! Watch out for the puppets and enjoy live music, children’s theatre, art and crafts in the creative space on Sunday. Organised by a group of enthusiastic local residents, the aim of DAF is to celebrate the arts and the wealth of talent, diversity and the vibrant community that make Didsbury

so special. Since its launch three years ago, the area’s annual celebration of the arts has now become a fixture on the local calendar. Festival Director, Maria Stripling, said: ‘This will be a great weekend, jam-packed with old favourites from the last four years of DAF, but also introducing some exciting, new events which will be irresistible to our audiences! ‘We are delighted to have this chance to showcase some of the best artists – not just in Didsbury and Manchester – but from all over the UK. Expect some surprises and watch this space!’ The Festival desk will be open at Didsbury Library from 15th September. Flyers and programmes will also be available from local shops and venues. info@didsburyartsfestival.org www.didsburyartsfestival.org ‘Mother Hen’ interactive storytelling Photo ©Phil Portus

“What can I say about Village Dry Cleaners? Just excellent! Amir, who owns the business, goes above and beyond what is expected and I can whole heartedly recommend his services. I run a vintage inspired bridal boutique in the heart of West Didsbury. As we stock highend dresses with sometimes challenging silks and fabrics to clean, we’re always amazed at how Amir manages to spruce up our dresses. I recommend his services to all our brides. He’s truly excellent at what he does and is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to fabric – the best dry cleaners in the north, without a doubt!” Nikki Graeme Owner, The White Closet, Didsbury
