Donations needed
Support your local Oxfam shop!
Donations of books, clothes and jewellery are needed to re-stock empty shelves at Oxfam in Didsbury. Staff at the charity store on Wilmslow Road are urging locals to bring in their unwanted goods to fill shelves and help boost sales.
“However, now that the weather is finally improving, I hope that we’ll see a rise in donations. We particularly need clothes, books and jewellery, but toys, accessories and homeware items will also be most welcome.”
Successful sales post Christmas have left the shop in need of good-quality stock, while recent poor weather has resulted in a fall in donations.
Added Wendy: “I’d like to thank people for their generosity and hope that they will continue to support Oxfam’s work fighting poverty at home and abroad.”
“People chose to stay at home rather than venture out in the freezing cold and rain,” explained Wendy Elliott, manager at Didsbury Oxfam.
For more details, or to join the shop’s volunteer team, call 0161 434 5380.

Winterreise by Franz Schubert Alexander Wall, an opera singer from Didsbury, will be performing a thrilling song cycle on Saturday 3rd March at Emmanuel Church. Winterreise by Franz Schubert is an earth-shatteringly beautiful work of enormous scope only attempted by the bravest of singers. The 24 songs tell the story of one man’s journey through ice and snow as he recalls his past love - his sweetheart whom has rejected him. The cycle starts with him silently Jamie Thompson Piano
leaving her house, and as he shuts the gate behind him his loss becomes all too apparent: the journey has begun! He quits the town not knowing where his legs will carry him, but certain that his soul is in pieces. Where will this journey take him?

March in your Garden With the mild winter we’ve had - early daffs and camellias flowering in January - we might be pulling on our wellies, itching to get out into the garden in March to pull-up and put in various bits and bobs that will promise a carpet of colour come July. Whilst it is certainly true that there’s more light and the soil temperature will be shifting northwards both of which will encourage plants to start growing again, March is also
13
by Katherine Watson
quite temperamental weather wise and too-early sowing and planting might be unwise. But we’ve never really worried about a bit of bad weather int’ North, neither have we shied away from a ‘bung-em-in’ attitude to seeds and plants – within reason. So you could try sowing some hardy annuals this month – wildflower mixes for example, and you could have a go at dividing some hardy perennials. A general forking over of the soil and application of a good general fertiliser will also replenish the depleted nutrient reserves and give plants a really good start to the growing year. You could also mount an argument for planting gladiolus corms at the end of the month and into April – blousy, camp, retro - gladdies will offer you just a touch of Dame Edna-chic. They are as easy as tulips to grow and there are lots of varieties from the frilly pastels if you want
to go really camp retro to the darker, sophisticated varieties used by garden designers at such prestigious events as the Chelsea Flower Show. Look out for the snappily titled variety: Gladiolus communis subsp.byzantinus for a lovely, more specialised red version. Other dark varieties include ‘Espresso’; ‘Plum Tart’ and ‘Zoro’. You might want to try an operatic ‘Peter Pears’ or a butch ‘Old Spice’, and sowing the corms in succession – i.e. a few days apart – will give you a longer flowering season possums. It could be advisable to lift the corms for the winter but that’s a bit fiddly so leave them in and see what happens next year – a general mulch in autumn should give them enough protection. The Rose Garden Reviewed A family restaurant serving quality traditional British food with a very modern twist. For our first restaurant review for the Community Index, we assembled a merry brigade of different tastes and needs. We had to choose a restaurant that we had heard was top notch, with top nosh. The Menu at the Rose Garden offers, what initially seems like simple English fare – scotch eggs, beef, roast chicken and sticky toffee pudding – but looking closer you will see clever twists, and attention to detail that nudges these dishes to a new culinary level. Take for example the beef; this was served in two ways, a fillet steak cooked to perfection and then a braised shin of beef, which was tender, moist and full of flavour. Then added to this was a “fidget pie”- layers of potato, apple and bacon, which truly complemented the meal. For the truly adventurous and slightly nutty(!), of which we certainly had one in our party, there was
squirrel and hazelnut pie, the meat was tender and the pastry was soft and crumbly. One set back to the dish was that the broccoli was overcooked. For the vegetarian amongst there was for starters a goat’s cheese parfait. It was an elegantly presented dish, which was delicious and creamy, and the accompaniment of pine nuts set the dish off. For dessert, everybody was instantly drawn to the sticky toffee chocolate fondant. For a start, two desserts in one, what’s not to like? There were perfect amounts of oozing chocolate ganache to spoon on the rich date pudding. And the final “piece de resistance” was the amazing homemade cinder ice cream! The restaurant itself is very modern in design, white seats, glass front, and it stands out from the rest of West Didsbury. The modern style hides the fact that this restaurant is a family
centred operation. The owner and chef is William Mills, with front of house run by his partner Emma, the restaurant was designed by his architect father and crafted by his brother, and his younger sister and brother help out front in the restaurants, so it really is a close knit operation and this is felt in the friendly service that makes add up to a truly relaxed atmosphere. In fact the service was so helpful that when one of our party realised she didn’t like pigeon after all, they were happy to make another starter for her. Our party had a lovely evening with great food; the only negative was the dent in the wallet at the end of the night. The quality of the cooking and the great service does come at a price. For a special occasion it’s definitely worth a try and you’ll be delighted by their interpretation of British Cuisine. If you are worried about the price then try the more reasonable set menu or go on one of the many theme nights that they do such as “Stewdays”. For the true gourmets, taster evenings happen once a month when chef William Mills really goes to town with all his inventive ideas. James Bolchover
