5 years on and still blooming... The Didsbury Open Gardens charity event celebrates its 5th anniversary on Sunday, 17th June, with more than 20 private and public gardens opening to the public. The event raises funds for St Ann’s Hospice, and in addition this year the Alzheimer’s Society and the local Didsbury Parsonage Trust. ‘The event has raised over £25,000 to date and we hope to have another bumper event’ said Maria Stripling, organiser. ‘We also hope that visitors from previous years will join us again (rain or shine) as we have quite a few new private gardens as well as some old favourites.’ The event attracts up to 1,000 visitors of all ages and

is a highlight in the Didsbury calendar. ‘Families take to the road on bikes, groups of friends can be seen wandering between gardens with programmes in hand and by the end of the day you really feel you have got to know everyone because you bump into people all day long in the gardens or over tea and cakes.’ Most gardens are within walking distance of each other and this is what also makes it a community event. Not to be missed this year will be live music and giant lawn games at Nazarene College, at Broomcroft Hall a willow sculpture demonstration by artist and garden designer Juliette Hamilton and a chance to win a

carved wooden owl by local chainsaw woodcarver, Andy Burgess (Andy has also carved a throne for the Queen with brother Tim!). Other fun highlights include a ‘spitting elephant’, treasure hunt, pottery sculpture, relaxing massage….. and of course a wide variety of fantastic gardens. Programmes (£5) available from 4 May at local shops The Cheese Hamlet and Inmans Newsagents or contact the organisers through the web site at www.didsburyopengardens.org

TAG News New Didsbury Traders Association

Since the last active members retired many years ago, Didsbury has been without a Traders Association. With the backing of the Didsbury Civic Society and the support of a few key traders we are forming a new Didsbury Traders Association to provide a framework for all businesses with a presence in the area to join together. Our main aim is to help ensure and promote a sustainable and safe, thriving, interesting, strong and cohesive local Didsbury community where traders, businesses, residents, workers and visitors want to spend their time and money. As a group we are better placed to engage on policy and commercial issues, learn from and support each other and engage more effectively with other local community groups sharing our aims. If you are a Didsbury Business and are interested in joining please email info@didsburytraders. co.uk. Entry is open to all and joining fees are reflective of your business size.

We are inviting you to get creative with textile and sew/ knit or crotchet a rectangle or shape of your choice (approximately A4 size) with your logo, image of yourselves or message, to be included (stitched) on the panels of our Didsbury Community Project. We (Carol from TAG! and Lesley from Community Index ) recently started the Wicknits project in Chorlton as part of Chorlton Big Green Festival. Panels of the project are now starting to appear round Chorlton and we thought it would be lovely to do a similar project in Didsbury too. We plan to take the Didsbury panels on tour round Didsbury locations and festivals starting with Didsbury Festival on 16th June.

Friends of Lapwing Lane Arcade For some time now those of us who enjoy visiting and shopping at the fine old arcade of shops on Lapwing Lane, where it crosses Palatine Road in West Didsbury, have been worried about the state of the canopy that fronts the shops and shelters the pavement. This canopy is the feature of the arcade that marks it out and is believed to be the last surviving original Edwardian canopy in Manchester. Unless something is done fairly soon the whole canopy will become dangerously decayed and will have to be demolished. For various legal, economic and historical reasons, the landlords and the shopkeepers are not in a position to take sufficient joint action. It is left to the people who live in the area and treasure this arcade to act. To this end Didsbury Civic Society is helping us set up a charitable trust – The Friends of Lapwing Lane Arcade (FOLLA) – to restore the canopy and ensure that it is maintained in a reasonable state in the future.

Why now? Well first and foremost, if something isn’t done soon the feature will disappear. But there is added historical focus because in 2013 the arcade will be 100 years old. Furthermore in the summer of next year the Metrolink will reach the area and the West Didsbury station over the road from the arcade will come into operation.

What repair work is required? The view of those who have examined the canopy recently is that, much of the ironwork (stanchions and tracery) can be restored but that some bits must be replaced. Where replacement is necessary then an exact

match to the original will be sought. All the glasswork needs replacing. Once the ironwork has been restored then it would be important for the appearance of the arcade not to have random large shop signs obscuring the view so it is sensible to insist that, if there are any signs, they conform to a uniform, unobtrusive design – possibly oval in shape like the sign in front of the current Sub Post Office unit. With the coming of the Metrolink and the inevitable increase in footfall in this area the opportunity for the retail businesses is enticing. The improvements to the arcades in Chorlton and Heaton Moor Road, Heaton Chapel attracted growth in trade for the shops and cafes in those areas, and it seems likely that an attractive arcade with many more passers by would lead to the same sort of development on Lapwing Lane.

How much is this all going to cost? Well at present we’re not sure, but The Didsbury Civic Society, who have already been exploring the possibility of the restoration of this arcade, have received a quotation of £28,000 from a local contractor who is keen to be associated with the work. Shop signs, costs for setting up of the Trust, and other items would add to the total sum. Perhaps £35,000/£40,000 is a more likely figure – but one of the first tasks for FOLLA is to get estimates for everything.

What about the owners? Well the whole restoration scheme is predicated on the transfer of ownership of the whole canopy to the new FOLLA Trust. Each owner will be asked to agree to this transfer and complete a legal transaction

11

to this effect. It would seem a good deal for the owners and we would seek to complete the transfer of ownership for a nominal sum per unit. Once these deals have been done then FOLLA would bear the ongoing responsibility for maintenance of the canopy supported by annual subscriptions from its members and a small annual fee from each of the owners/tenants.

How do we get this underway in time for next summer? FOLLA is setting itself up as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). FOLLA will have a constitution, a board of Trustees and a bank account and be eligible for gift aid status. As soon as possible we will negotiate with the owners and tenants (most of whom have already indicated their enthusiastic support for the scheme) with a view to taking ownership of the canopy and starting the restoration work. We will be running public events over the coming weeks and months and want as many local people to sign up as ‘Friends’ for £5 a year. Each ‘Friend’ will get a regular monthly bulletin from FOLLA giving updates on progress. We also have a website: www.folla. org.uk If you wish to become a ‘Friend’ please contact us. It would help to have your email address (preferable), or postal address. The Inmans shop on the arcade will act as a focal point and will also be able to sign you up as a Friend. This Exhibition through its work, challenges the current attitude toward the ‘C’ word and its fatalistic associations - at some point we are all ‘survivors’ of natural phenomena and though reminded of our own mortality, it is no different to other challenges we face in our lifecycles. Acceptance of this is vital to recognise the ‘light’ when it comes in its different forms. In recognition of those in the NHS who help us accept disease and treatment positively.

May in your Garden

Fingers crossed we’ll get some going out time in our gardens weatherwise this month as May is a great time to plant grasses. Grasses are a wonderful addition to the border acting as a textural foil to successional perennials but also require little maintenance – a chop in spring usually does the trick before the new growth starts and the usual mulching if you remember will set them up for a good few years. Grasses are grouped into cool climate and warm climate varieties. The cool climate varieties include Carex, Calamagrostis, Deschampsia, Hakonechloa, Molina and Stipa (these seem to be the most popular ones in this category) and the warm climate varieties include Arundo, Cortaderia (pampas grass), Imperata, Miscanthus, Panicum and Pennisetum. Whilst these lists may read something like names from a Roman Legion, there is reason to specify their

by Katherine Watson

difference. Firstly, the cool climate grasses tend – with a few exceptions - to do slightly better in shade and need dividing in winter and early spring. The warmer climate grasses on the other hand will always do better in full sun and prefer being divided in May. The cool set require quite frequent division whilst the warmer lot probably won’t need a great deal (although my Miscanthus have become huge over a four year period and have required a firm hand). Dividing grasses is easy – lift the clump by digging down a generous way and a good few inches wide of the base. Then take two forks back-to-back in the middle of the clump and prise them apart. Some smaller grasses like the black grass Ophiopogon will send little bulblets out that can be picked out and replanted without lifting.

variety of garden Miscanthus I’ve talked about before – stately, solid and a good foil for perennials such as Echinacea. For a return to swingers-chic, the pampas grass can be used in our city gardens if we go for a small variety like Cortaderia selloana ‘Pumilla’. Grasses can even be used in shade – Hakonechloa, Millium and Deschampsia varieties will all brighten up a dark corner. So maybe we can think about moving away from our water-guzzling lawns (you never know they may one day be subject to a lawn tax!) and move the grass to the border instead. Pomegranate Restaurant Review After the untimely sunshine, cold and rain had again fallen on Manchester, my wife and I sought refuge in Pomegranate restaurant. On walking through the door we were transported away from the disappointing weather into a lavish setting that seemed straight out of a Middle Eastern medina. Lanterns and mosaics surrounded us and we hoped this interesting setting would be matched by the food.

We started with a Mirza (smoked aubergine with tomatoes and plenty of garlic) and a sabzi panir and Naan. The Mirza was very tasty, but we were slightly confused by the menu that said it had eggs in which we really couldn’t taste. When we asked the waitress she said the chef had stopped adding it because people weren’t so keen even though it is the traditional way. Well I say keep it traditional or let people decide. We finished it up nonetheless. The Sabzi panir was a good and unusual dish. The paneer itself tasted like feta cheese but it was served in a kind of do it yourself sandwich. There was cheese, fresh mint and salad, and lovely olives in a rich sauce which you could put altogether or eat separately. The bread that came with both

these dishes was delicious, thin and dusted with sesame seeds that was warm and fresh.

For mains I chose Ghorme Sabzi which as I understand is a Persian classic and consists of slow cooked lamb cooked in mixed green herbs and beans. I’ve had this dish before at other Persian restaurants and enjoyed it greatly so thought that this would be a real test of the quality and authenticity of the food. I’m no expert but it was particularly good. The lamb was succulent and the herbs tasted fresh. My wife went for an unusual sounding dish Zereshk Polo: steamed barberries, saffron rice with tender chicken pieces in a tomato and saffron sauce. The chicken was a little dry but this was mainly because it was breast and not a leg or thigh which I think are always more tasty if it’s a dish that requires the meat to be cooked for some time. The rice was particularly delicious with the steamed barberries adding a lovely tartness. The dishes were all good sizes and the cost was very reasonable. We were too full to have dessert but ordered some Baghlava to take home with us for our baby sitters. My dad is something of a connoisseur when it comes to baghlava and he was particularly grateful for this treat. I would definitely recommend this little establishment as a way to be transported to a warm and exotic land and interesting flavours and textures.
