Dear Readers, After a busy summer settling into my new role as editor, I’m really enjoying getting to know readers, advertisers and regular contributors. I love the way that Community Index encourages positive relationships between residents, businesses and community organisations. Please do get in touch if you are organising events in December and January and we will do our best to include the details. Although I’ve taken on day to day management, Lesley is still very much involved and this month she’s had a haircut! I understand the importance of a good haircut and advertiser Clive Victor Gale has done a great job on Our Great Leader. Let her know what you think if you see her out and about. With the festive season rapidly approaching, how about joining in with some pre-Christmas frolics in Fog Lane Park? The South Manchester Santa Dash is back again on Saturday 1st December and sounds like great fun. Taking part helps raise funds for local Red Cross projects. Register at redcross.org.uk/ santadash or call Clare on 0161 888 8918.

Didsbury People Joanne Kaberry

Interview by Deborah Grace A debilitating illness gave Joanne Kaberry the push she needed to pursue her creative ambitions. Here the artist, photographer and one-time model discusses inspiration, silver linings and nocturnal mischief!

www.jk-photography.co.uk What do you do? I started out doing flower photography, selling prints and cards. I loved it so much I started studying at night school; then went on to study Commercial Photography at Stockport College. I’m still selling prints and cards, but I also do weddings, events, portraits and product photography.

How did you get started? I’ve been obsessed with the arts since I was a teenager. I also learned a lot about photography when I was a model and, most importantly, how the business works. But it wasn’t until I became ill with ME in 2000 that I really started to get into photography. I needed something to do that wasn’t too strenuous – that I could do when I was feeling up to it. Photography filled the gap.

Why do you think M.E. (myalgic encephalomyelitis or Chronic Fatigue

4

Syndrome) is still so misunderstood as a medical condition?

there I found a tree full of fungi and had a ball photographing it.

ME is a complex illness and each individual experiences it uniquely. It can cause not just physical debilitation, but also neurological problems and mental health issues. People with ME can appear normal for a certain period of time; then they go back to feeling debilitated again and this confuses people. Unfortunately, some people are judgemental and think that because ME sufferers can behave normally at times, they must be faking it when they’re unwell. To hear someone say to you, ‘Oh for God’s sake, just get on with it!’ is extremely humiliating to someone who is seriously ill. Thankfully, I’m well enough to work now, but I still have to rest a lot.

Where do you find your inspiration? I love nothing more than getting in the car and zooming off to Alderley Edge. Last time I went

Although, I doubt I’ll use the images for any artwork!

Tell me a guilty secret. I once stole a flower from a neighbour’s garden in London! It was a very unusual camellia; really exquisite like a lotus flower. I went out late at night, dressed in black, and jumped over my neighbour’s wall only to be caught by an infra-red light, like a criminal! Operation Camellia had been a failure so I got up very early and went back for the flower in daylight. I took a picture of the camellia on my bathroom window sill which was very old and covered in mildew. It was the perfect background!

Complete the sentence, ‘I love Didsbury because …’ … I feel part of a community and I’ve got to know so many wonderful people while living here. I also like the proximity to the countryside, as I need to be immersed in nature regularly.

Review : Clive Victor Gale by Lesley Swann

I’ve always been reluctant to get a haircut. I’ve had some bad experiences in the past; from the unfortunate shaggy dog perm to the experimental too short fringe. I’m nervous about making an appointment, so a haircut is a once every couple of years thing and often disappoints. Clive came to talk about booking advertising in Community Index a couple of months ago. It was the day after yet another bad haircut which had set me back £50 and was definitely not what I’d asked for.

Clive was very sympathetic and we had a long chat about how it could be put right. Then I waited a couple of months for it to grow out and called Clive. I’d not considered using a mobile hairdresser before, but it now seems like the obvious solution for anyone with a busy life or who, like me, has had bad experiences in salons. The whole experience was completely stress free. Clive was very easy to talk to and I felt comfortable (at home) enough to explain exactly what I wanted. He listened carefully and took the time to look at how my hair actually grows and sits. Before wielding his scissors he made sure he knew exactly

clive victor gale

what I wanted and there was the added bonus that I didn’t have to sit under unforgiving lighting feeling exposed, vulnerable and nervous! I actually enjoyed it and will definitely be booking Clive on a regular basis in the future. Clive has been working as a freelance hairdresser for more than twenty years and much prefers it to life in a salon. He takes great pride in his work and obviously really enjoys it. Most of his clients are long term regulars, but he does have some space for a few more clients in South Manchester. At £29 for my cut and blow dry he’s fantastic value and he’s even offering Community Index readers 20% off their first appointment.

Book Reviews by Deborah Grace Eliot’s The Wasteland, the novel’s title underlines life’s bleakness and the futility of human striving in the face of mortality.

A Handful of Dust Evelyn Waugh Evelyn Waugh takes no prisoners in his blistering 1930s satire on the cream of English society. With savage glee he lays bare the moral bankruptcy of the party-going, moneyed classes and attacks both innocent and guilty without mercy. In its reference to TS

Aristocrat Tony Last enjoys an idyllic country existence. Devoted to his wife Lady Brenda and their only son John Andrew, Tony’s energies are focused on the upkeep of his ancestral home, Hetton Abbey, a money-eating, neoGothic monster of which he is fiercely proud. Content to follow the unchanging rhythms and traditions of endless generations, Tony is blissfully unaware of Brenda’s longing for excitement and the social whirl of London. When the opportunity presents itself, she Seymours – in the interests of self-advancement apparently had no qualms about bartering the lives of their daughters and nieces in a deadly game of favourites.

Bring Up the Bodies Hilary Mantel For a young English noblewoman with ambitious relatives there could be perhaps no more dangerous place than the volatile court of Henry VIII. The great families of Tudor England – the Howards and the

At the beginning of Bring Up the Bodies, the sequel to Wolf Hall, Anne Boleyn, now Queen of England, is already living on borrowed time. The king, disenchanted with his second queen and frustrated at her inability to produce a live, male heir is casting his eye in the direction of a whey-faced Jane Seymour. The problem now is how to rid himself of the present incumbent and make way for wife number three. Seen through the consciousness of Thomas

embarks - to the amusement of friends - on an affair with ghastly mummy’s boy, John Beaver. Following a family tragedy, Tony’s eyes are finally opened to the full extent of his wife’s betrayal. In a quest for self-discovery, Tony embarks for Brazil in search of an ancient, lost city. But a cruelly ironic fate has prepared for him his own personal hell. There is a strikingly contemporary feel to the snappy dialogue and intercutting of scenes, so that at times the text reads like a film script. No surprise then that the 1998 screen adaptation (James Wilby, Kristen Scott Thomas) was a huge success!

Cromwell, this account of Anne Boleyn’s swift and shocking demise conveys a sense of ruthless, cold-blooded efficiency. There are many agents in her downfall, but it is Cromwell, the king’s right-hand man, who effectively orchestrates the hysterical narrative of infidelity, incest and witchcraft that provides Henry with his solution. In just a few tumultuous weeks in the late spring of 1536 Anne Boleyn is brought down and delivered blindfold to the French swordsman. And thus, ‘a sharp sigh or sound like a whistle through a keyhole: the body exsanguinates and its flat little presence becomes a puddle of gore.’ Brilliant!

Southern Cemetery John Prettyjohns (1823-1887) by Nola Chesworth Even if I didn’t already know his name it would have stood out from the ‘Notable Burials’ list; even if his name wasn’t on this list, and I stumbled across his grave, this is a man I would have been curious to know more about. For this name is one of the most beautiful names I have ever heard. John Prettyjohns was born in Devon in 1823, and died in Chorlton-on-Medlock in 1887; he earned his place on the notable burials list by becoming the first Royal Marine to win the Victoria Cross. Prettyjohns won this prestigious award on the 5th November 1854 as a Corporal at the Battle of

Inkerman, during the Crimean War, when, realising they were out of ammunition, he told his men to gather stones and throw them at the Russian enemy. He went on to become Sergeant, then Colour Sergeant; sailing the Andaman Sea during the Second Opium War, before retiring in 1865. Upon retirement he took up the position as Golfing Steward at a bowling club in Withington; he lived in South Manchester until he passed away in January 1887, outlived by his wife Elizabeth

who he is buried alongside, in a beautiful, heavily wooded part of Southern Cemetery.

Didsbury Players Preparing for panto season After four months of hard work, Didsbury Players got Didsbury singing and dancing last month with their self-penned and produced original musical ‘So Popera’! If you didn’t manage to catch it, here are a few snapshots that show how much fun everyone had! But there’s no rest for the wicked! They’ve recently started working on Aladdin, another genie-us of a pantomime, and in a little over two months, they’ll be bringing you power hungry villains, well-meaning but a little clueless kings, beautiful princesses, feisty genies and of course, their own melodramatic and cross-dressing Dame! Will the Princess convince her father that she doesn’t need a dull, self-absorbed prince to help her run the kingdom? Will the wicked Abanazar manage to enlist the help of the Genie of the Lamp to steal the throne and rule the kingdom? Will Aladdin get to woo the Princess and save the day? And most importantly, will Widow Twanky

bulldoze her way into the King’s heart? Join them in this spectacular family adventure to find out!

Didsbury Through Time by Andrew Simpson We are outside the Wellington Inn and it is sometime after 1865 at the junction of Barlow Moor and Wilmslow Roads. Now I can be fairly certain about the date because 1865 was the year the Manchester Carriage Company was formed from a merger of the two bus companies serving the city and neighbouring townships. The larger was owned by the Greenwood Company and brought over 500 horses and 33 omnibuses to the merger, while what had been McEwen’s City Omnibus Company contributed the routes to Bell Vue, Rusholme, Longsight and Didsbury. The photograph is one of those wonderfully staged pictures which

says much about the novelty of photography at the time. The passengers stare back at you with that mix of curiosity and arrogance, and not a woman amongst them. And just as I can be certain that the date is after 1865 I can be equally sure that it can be no later than 1895 when the old Wellington Inn was torn down and the present large property was built. The Wellington Inn was once the Grey Horse and had a bowling green at the rear on the land which is now the library. I knew it as the Cavalcade and today it is the Zizzi Ristorante which points to how Didsbury continues to change and evolve.

November In Your Garden by Katherine Watson During November I will be taking time to overhaul a few things in my garden. Now that most of the herbaceous perennials are ready for a cut back and the garden has shrunk a little again, I can get to some of the structures that need a bit of TLC.

Now that most of the herbaceous perennials are ready for a cut back and the garden has shrunk a little again, I can get to some of the structures that need a bit of TLC

I have a rendered raised bed that has been painted black - successfully - for the past five years but has needed repainting at this time every other year (or every year for a finickity eye) and this year I’d like a change. I’m going to try a fairly new cladding system from Marshalls called ‘Stoneface’ - a natural stone veneer that comes in a variety of different colour ways and looks very easy to use.

Black or a dark slate works particularly well here as a contrast to the small seating area / gin terrace, paved with a creamy travertine, catching the sun for a couple of crucial early evening hours. The planting in this area will change too. The raised bed is quite deep with a small trimmed beech hedge

to the back and four box pyramids along its length. I wanted this area to have a feel of ‘loose formality’ so have interspersed the box with aquilegia ‘spitfire’ a bright orange version which works well but needs a bit more oomph and texture, so I’m thinking of introducing some stipa tennuissima for filigree contrast and some smatterings of sanguisorba ‘Nanna’. I’ve also got an out-of-hand pheasant’s tail grass (Anemanthele

lessoniana) enthusiastically moved from another part of the garden, but I think I might have to admit that my garden is just too small and offer it up for swaps. The beauty of our relationships with our gardens is that we can, not too painfully, change and tinker with things we get fed up of, even swap the occasional loved, but time worn item without the intervention of Relate

Sport in Didsbury by Geoff Garnett More good news for sport in Didsbury With the work on improved and extended clubhouse facilities now well under way and on schedule for the new season, the Didsbury Playing Fields Association has been handed another financial boost. The DPFA (comprising Didsbury Toc H RUFC and Burnage Metro FC) has secured £48,732 of National Lottery investment from Sport England’s Protected Playing Field Fund and now people of all ages in the heart of Didsbury can look forward to decades of high-quality sport. DPFA will use the investment to

complete the drainage system at Simons Field for the Sports Hub’s training area, cricket outfield and a football pitch. DPFA chairman Mo Perkins said: “We’re delighted to have secured this investment which means that we can get our field to the optimum standard. The playing field will also be protected from developers for at least 25 years creating an enduring benefit for sport.” Sport England chairman Nick Bithel added: “The popularity of this legacy fund shows just how important good local playing fields are to grassroots sport. But Sport

Work nearing completion of the new clubhouse facilities England’s support for playing fields is about much more than money, every day our experts play a vital role in protecting sports provision through the planning system.”

Bright start for Parrs Wood Celtic Parrs Wood Celtic are one of several excellent football clubs in Didsbury who enjoy their game in the prestigious Lancashire and Cheshire AFL. The league celebrated its centenary in 2008 and Celtic have been members since 1987. The past four seasons have seen the club make great strides extending their membership to three teams, who all did well, last season. The first team just missed out on promotion to the Premier

division and again are well in the hotly contested promotion mix. Along with their other two teams they’ll be looking to take some silverware at the end of the season.

Great Day for charity at Didsbury Golf Club THERE was a hugely successful Captain’s Charity Day competition at Didsbury Golf Club. A glorious day of sunshine helped to raise well over £2,000 for the joint charities of Macmillan Cancer Support and Motor Neurone Disease. One of the main items for auction was a signed St Helens RLFC shirt which was presented by Bob Cairns and there was also a special presentation to Ashia Miah the owner of the Gatley Cuisine Restaurant who was donated to receive a framed Man City shirt as a tribute to his support for the event over the last 12 years.
