Present
Ruth with her daughter shopping in London
It was after persuasion by her friends that Ruth Linton set up Present Perfect Personal Shopping, a unique service that has already come to be valued by a growing list of delighted clients. For years Ruth found herself called on by friends to join them shopping for a special outfit, a holiday wardrobe, or home makeover. And, whether it’s picking out that perfect dress or re-arranging the living space, Ruth has always been the person to make things happen. And now she has set up Present Ruth at Ladies’ Day
Perfect Personal Shopping, a bespoke service to give you the benefit of her expertise. Ruth’s innate sense of style inspires all her clients. Only last week, she received an SOS from a pal immobilised by a fall, and in desperate need of an outfit for a fast approaching golf club dinner. Ruth’s intuitive understanding of her friend’s taste, and her own instinctive sense of what’s hot and what’s now, meant she achieved just the right look – resulting in a delighted response. She can find the perfect items for any budget with an easy mix of high street and designer looks, all on trend and just right for individual needs. If you want all designer, her connections with top stores means she’ll find just the right pieces, but if the High Street’s your bag, she can pick up the perfect bargain too. As for cost, Ruth will only charge for actual shopping hours. So your initial consultation and Ruth’s research is all free, and any discounts will be directly passed on to you, so you could end up saving in more ways than one – saving making a fashion or gift howler, and saving in money terms too. So how does it all work? After an initial consultation, Ruth will shop with or without you - the
Perfect Personal Shopping choice is yours - either putting items away for you to try at your convenience or by bringing them directly to you on approval. That’s because Present Perfect Personal Shopping will always be tailor made to suit you. Why not try PPPS next time you need something special, or if you’re looking for a gift with a difference, a Present Perfect Personal Shopping voucher would make an ideal choice for an individual friend, or girls’ weekend treat. If you have a busy lifestyle, find time runs away, or simply can’t get out, use PPPS and feel reassured that a discreet, intuitive shopper is on hand to find those extra special presents or outfits with all the care and more you’d want to give yourself. To find out more, contact Ruth for details or to arrange a free consultation.

Five Years in
West Didsbury
THE BURTON ROAD CLINIC IS CELEBRATING 5 YEARS AT 121 BURTON ROAD, WEST DIDSBURY. Back in 2005 the building, on the corner of Burton Road and Goulden Road, was an abandoned off license standing empty and looking sorry. Registered Osteopath Nick Vine bought the premises, and after a total renovation moved his central Didsbury practice into them. The appearance of the building has changed dramatically, having become a modern, smart clinic whilst keeping many of its original features. The side of the building which was once a popular spot for fly tipping, is now a patient car park bordered by beautiful French Laurels. Talking about the whole process Nick explained “The renovation was a long, hard effort with a major part played by Scott
McGrath, another Osteopath, who practised from here initially too. Whilst the work on a building of this age is always ongoing, the result has been a building designed to suit our needs as a reasonably sized multi-disciplinary practice.” Over the last five years the clinic has grown steadily, now with 4
staff and 13 different therapists it provides a wide range of treatments. The main provision is osteopathy and chiropody, but it also includes acupuncture, hypnotherapy, nutritional therapy, herbal medicine, psychotherapy, orthotics, massage and the Alexander technique amongst others. When asked about the patients that he and fellow Osteopath Carolyn Greenhalgh see, Nick said, “The majority of our
“The whole Burton Road area of West Didsbury is changing rapidly, and it’s exciting to see and be part of it. It is busy in the daytime and the evenings, and the plans for the Metrolink seem to be continuing despite the spending review, which I think will be a tremendous benefit for the area.”
7 patients come in suffering with neck or back pain. We do treat a lot of shoulder, hip and knee problems too, in fact almost anything involving joints or muscles, but I think most people associate osteopaths with back problems.” “We recently reviewed our patient base and found that whilst males and females had some
differences in presentation, such as fewer women injuring themselves in manual work, and understandably fewer men developing problems due to pregnancy, computer usage was a very common cause amongst both. I started to notice this trend as far back as 1999 when IT contractors were working very long hours to contend with the millennium bug threat. People who work in IT
or jobs involving computer usage have been the commonest career group since then. IT workers can reduce their risk by supporting their lower back and sitting back in their chair when working. Also setting their screen at eye level and putting the keyboard at the edge of the desk helps. Monitors offset to one side are a bad idea, and laptops should not be used on the lap, nor the coffee table whilst you sit on the sofa. Take regular breaks to get up and move around, and if you’re developing symptoms of stiffness or pain see an osteopath.” For information regarding the Burton Road Clinic feel free to call on 0161 446 2533 or visit our website www. theburtonroadclinic.co.uk

Book Reviews from Chorlton Bookshop
to becoming a national treasure.
The Longest Whale Song by Jacqueline Wilson As gritty and realistic as ever, Jacqueline Wilson is once again at the top of her game. Ella has a brand new baby brother but her Mum is left in a coma following his birth. Instead of being depressing this is a powerful story about positive thinking and survival. Despite it’s themes it would be suitable for an 8+ age range but would also appeal to older readers.
The Fry Chronicles by Stephen Fry Following on from “Moab is my Wash pot” This fantastic raconteur shares more tales from his incredible journey
Diary of A Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth by Jeff Kinney This is the fifth instalment of the hugely successful series. As the main character grows up so the themes are becoming slightly more in depth. Suitable for 8+.
Mr Gum and the Secret Hideout by Andy Stanton Andy Stanton has done it again. Book 8 in the series is as hilariously fantastic as the previous 7. Polly is back protecting the streets of Lamonic Bibber from the
stinky disgusting Mr Gum.
Up and Down by Oliver Jeffers Written as a sequel to “Lost and Found”, this visually stunning story deals with issues of friendship and love. As with his previous books the story is mainly told through the illustrations with a minimum of text making it suitable for a 2+ age range.

Happy Computer Christmas Christmas Present Ideas for the PC Owner in Your Life Christmas is coming! Is it time to drop some hints about presents you’d like? Or are you already running out of ideas for what to buy some people? Fret not, help is at hand. Here are some ideas for computer-related presents – for yourself or for someone else. 1. If you are thinking of buying a PC, make sure it is running Windows 7. On both desktops and laptops, it is a vast improvement on Vista. 2. Are you thinking of asking for or getting someone else a laptop? If so, please get in touch, as I have access to some very nice machines at very advantageous prices! Have a look at the specifications on my website (www.tlc-computing.co.uk). 3. Go wireless! Wireless networks are straightforward to set up - the main piece of hardware you will need is a wireless router. Just think about the flexibility it can give you. You won’t have to put the computer next to the telephone, you can have it where you want. All modern laptops are wireless ready, and desktop PCs can also be made wireless by installing a wireless card. A good present might be to give a “gift
voucher” (from TLC, naturally!) to supply, install, and set up a wireless system in someone’s home. Give me a call for details. 4. I know it’s not very exciting, but, along the same gift voucher lines, I could do a service and possibly add some extra RAM to a slow machine. Again, please get in touch – you could make someone’s Christmas! 5. USB Memory Sticks are always useful. They are good for backup storage (for all those precious photos, music collections, and documents). They are also a handy way of moving files from one PC to another. Students, teachers, and people who sometimes work from home and need to take files back to the office PC find them especially useful in that respect. Nowadays they can store a lot of files, and could make a useful stocking filler. Give me a call for prices. 6. For more serious backup and storage, portable Hard Disks should be considered. They work like memory sticks, but hold a lot more data. It’s good to get into the habit of regularly backing up files, so that if the worst happens and the PC’s hard drive
fails, at least the coursework/ dissertation/music collection/ photo albums won’t be lost. 7. Wireless printers are all the rage at the moment. One printer in the house can be accessed by all the PCs connected to the domestic network. 8. Still got a TV-style monitor, or know someone who’d really appreciate a flat-screen one? Prices are good at the moment, they take up much less space, and they’re more energy-efficient. Some even have built-in speakers. 9. What about a set of quality speakers for someone’s PC? They can really make a difference when watching catch-up TV, or listening to the radio over the internet, or playing your favourite tracks. 10. And finally … remember that VAT increases in January. Say no more! If I can help with any of the above, please get in touch. I can discuss ideas with you, as well as supply information about prices and services. I can be very discreet, and you can rest assured your Christmas surprise (if that’s what you want it to be) will be safe with me. Enjoy the Christmas Season, and I hope to hear from you. Nick Brimelow talks about the property market in 2010.
M
arket conditions during 2010 have been significantly more bouyant than many would have you believe. Here in my Didsbury Office both my Sales and Rental staff have experienced a significant increase in trade and whilst I realise that we are moving into a seasonally quieter period, we want to be able to increase our market share in both fields. For that reason I am delighted to confirm that as of the 1st November, we will be opening a second office in the centre of Didsbury to cater purely for Lettings and Property Management. This will allow us to devote an office to each department as we start to prepare for what we hope will be a succesful 2011.
Situated directly opposite my sales office, the new operation will be headed by Lucy Brown who has recently been promoted as our Manageress. Lucy and the rest of her team have many years experience working in lettings in the Didsbury area and we hope that by investing in the new office that we can continue to expand our business, whilst at the same time provide a spacious environment for current landlords and clients. By transferring the Lettings Department into their own premises, I am able to revert my current office back to dealing solely with Sales. We are in the process of upgrading our computer systems, re-vamping our website and this move will also provide a much more pleasant working environment for both my staff and all visiting clients.
Top: Darley Avenue sold 2010 Left: Heritage Gardens sold 2010
Having two such desirable offices situated in the centre of the village shows our commitment to both Sales and Lettings and is a statement of our continued desire to remain market leaders in both fields. I know that my staff in both offices would be delighted for any clients to call in and I am certain that we can be of assistance to you.
Nick Brimelow Director
Queenston Road sold 2010
“Despite media reports, 2010 has been a thriving year in the South Manchester property market... which is why as from November 1st, our new Lettings office will open, allowing us to concentrate purely on Sales in our current office.”

Christmas All Wrapped Up
Danielle Lowy from Rubbish Revamped shares low-cost ideas for festive gift-wrapping The season for giving and receiving gifts is well and truly upon us. Whether you are a shopping diva or plod around the shops with gritted teeth, those gifts will need wrapping. Now, a beautifully wrapped present is a joy to behold and adds to the delicious anticipation of opening the gift. But wouldn’t you rather focus your money on the content than the packaging? The solution is to make your own wrappings, and you can do this from things you would normally throw away. Community Index will get you started here with a simple guide to making a lovely gift bow. And it’s pretty enough to add to the Christmas tree after the gift’s been opened. • Ruler • Scissors 1. Measure and cut six strips 2cm wide across the top of your sheet. Each strip will be
You will need • An A5 piece of paper (Community Index size). Try a magazine cover, an old map, junkmail or leaflets • Glue • Stapler
2cm wide by 21cm long. 2. Keep three strips 21cm long, cut 2cm off two strips and 9 cm off the final strip. 3. Glue the middle of a strip and twist the ends to meet at a diagonal in the centre. Make figures of 8 like this with the five longest strips.
Festive Wrapping Ideas to try:
4. Starting with the three longest, layer the five strips at well spaced angles. Staple the centre to secure them. 5. Make a loop with the smallest strip and glue it in the centre. Make different size ribbons by using more strips, cut thinner. Say, 8 strips measured at 1.5cm wide.
•
Ignore expensive wrapping paper: use newspaper, comics, magazines, old maps
•
Jazz these up with funky yarns (you know that scarf you never knitted…?)
•
Tie on some buttons or beads from broken jewellery
•
Decorate newspaper-wrapped gifts with cut-out pictures or strips from shop-bought wrapping paper or old Christmas cards
•
Last year’s Christmas cards can be cut to make present tags
•
Tie a Christmas tree chocolate to the gift tag

Bean Sprouting
tasty, nutritious and fun
Bean sprouts are tasty, easy to digest and very nutritious and it’s a simple job to sprout your own. Our technical editor Sam Paechter shares his sprouting top tips. Here I’ve sprouted mung beans which are the most common bean sold as bean sprouts, but you can sprout aduki beans, lentils, chick peas, alfalfa seeds, barley and many other beans and seeds. You don’t need any special equipment. A glass jar with a cloth over the opening (to keep the dust out) or in the case of mung beans, which don’t mind being sprouted in the dark, a
bowl covered with a plate. But if you’re fond of gadgets, there are special bean sprouters you can buy. Choose a large enough container as your sprouts will grow to several times their original volume.
Sprouting Mung Beans 1. Take about 50g/2oz of mung beans and soak them in cold water until they’ve swelled up – this should take about twelve hours. 2. Drain, rinse and place in your chosen sprouting vessel. 3. Rinse regularly, at least twice a day. It’s really important not to let your sprouts dry out, but also make sure they’re not standing in water. 4. Watch in wonder over the next few days as your bean sprouts grow. You can eat your sprouts as soon as they’ve started sprouting, but if you’ve got more than you can use in one go, they will keep well in the fridge for a few days.

Step off the Dieting
Merry-Go-Round Eastern and Western approaches to weight loss differ greatly. In the West, the physical body is of supreme importance. Study after study has been conducted to determine the best physical way to lose weight. But regardless of the preferred method of weight loss, Western science tends to focus only on the physical body in relation to the epidemic of obesity in our society. In the East, the emphasis is on the whole person, including our emotional, mental, energetic and spiritual aspects. The core belief is that the physical body is only an outer reflection of inner balance or imbalance. In the West, most of us still do not realise how our emotional and mental states can affect our eating habits and our weight. As an example, let us imagine we are angry or fearful about a relationship in our life. Maybe our partner is being unfaithful or our mother has just died. Regardless of the precise nature
of our emotional pain or hurt, it is very easy for many of us to turn to food for comfort. However, what we are really trying to do is to suppress our painful emotions. If we turn to food for comfort, before we know it, our eating has turned into uncontrollable, unconscious binging that leaves us feeling even worse about ourselves. But at the same time, we have been on enough diets! We now urgently need new tools to help us take control of our mental and emotional states. Until we do this, we will never control our yo-yoing weight. For me practising the gentle arts of Tai Chi and Chi Kung has been an amazing escape route out of the endless dieting trap. As I cultivate the chi, or universal life force, I am able to raise my vibrations, calm my mind, balance my emotions, and create a stronger, healthier and yes, thinner body. After 10 years of practice,
my life has completely turned around. I have lost over 5 stones and kept it off for several years. I feel younger and much happier than I did 20 years ago. I now have the tools to handle and release any emotional pain as it rises up in my system, and best of all, I have finally stepped off the dieting merry-go-round for good!
