Christmas at Monkey Puzzle Toys You know when you write a list of the pros and cons of an idea and then completely ignore the obvious because you want to do something so much? Well, 11 months ago that is pretty much what Amanda and I did. Taking over the toy shop we were both working in, rebranding, changing the stock to suit the customers better. All this of course in the middle of a recession. It should have been a definite no. But we loved working there and many customers were fast becoming friends. So, after a lot of hard work, Monkey Puzzle Toys was born. Almost a year on and we are still loving it. We’ve had a fantastic response from the local community and we’d like to thank our loyal customers for their support. We couldn’t have done it without you! We will continue to mini provide high quality, £49.99 fun, engaging and maxi interesting toys £89.99 for all ages at competitive prices, with

the personal and friendly service which we feel sets us apart from the big chains. We pride ourselves on listening to our customers, really getting to know the children (basically playing a lot!) and trying to offer the best advice. Customer service really is paramount to us, and we will even find toys in another shop if necessary. Being part of the community and trying to support local schools and charities is fundamental to our ethos – we are honoured to be in a position where we can to help. At the moment we are running a competition at Chorlton library for the book festival and we are working with MOSI to help promote the joys of science. We have supported most, if not all, of the local schools as well as St Ann’s Hospice and The Medical Foundation for Victims of Torture with raffle prizes so thank you for helping us to help such worthy causes.

Book Reviews from Chorlton Bookshop

to becoming a national treasure.

The Longest Whale Song by Jacqueline Wilson As gritty and realistic as ever, Jacqueline Wilson is once again at the top of her game. Ella has a brand new baby brother but her Mum is left in a coma following his birth. Instead of being depressing this is a powerful story about positive thinking and survival. Despite it’s themes it would be suitable for an 8+ age range but would also appeal to older readers.

The Fry Chronicles by Stephen Fry Following on from “Moab is my Wash pot” This fantastic raconteur shares more tales from his incredible journey

Diary of A Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth by Jeff Kinney This is the fifth instalment of the hugely successful series. As the main character grows up so the themes are becoming slightly more in depth. Suitable for 8+.

Mr Gum and the Secret Hideout by Andy Stanton Andy Stanton has done it again. Book 8 in the series is as hilariously fantastic as the previous 7. Polly is back protecting the streets of Lamonic Bibber from the

stinky disgusting Mr Gum.

Up and Down by Oliver Jeffers Written as a sequel to “Lost and Found”, this visually stunning story deals with issues of friendship and love. As with his previous books the story is mainly told through the illustrations with a minimum of text making it suitable for a 2+ age range.

Bean Sprouting

tasty, nutritious and fun

Bean sprouts are tasty, easy to digest and very nutritious and it’s a simple job to sprout your own. Our technical editor Sam Paechter shares his sprouting top tips. Here I’ve sprouted mung beans which are the most common bean sold as bean sprouts, but you can sprout aduki beans, lentils, chick peas, alfalfa seeds, barley and many other beans and seeds. You don’t need any special equipment. A glass jar with a cloth over the opening (to keep the dust out) or in the case of mung beans, which don’t mind being sprouted in the dark, a

bowl covered with a plate. But if you’re fond of gadgets, there are special bean sprouters you can buy. Choose a large enough container as your sprouts will grow to several times their original volume.

Sprouting Mung Beans 1. Take about 50g/2oz of mung beans and soak them in cold water until they’ve swelled up – this should take about twelve hours. 2. Drain, rinse and place in your chosen sprouting vessel. 3. Rinse regularly, at least twice a day. It’s really important not to let your sprouts dry out, but also make sure they’re not standing in water. 4. Watch in wonder over the next few days as your bean sprouts grow. You can eat your sprouts as soon as they’ve started sprouting, but if you’ve got more than you can use in one go, they will keep well in the fridge for a few days.

GRUB

Growing, Redistribution & Urban Boxes GRUB operates out of MCC (Manchester Creative Collective) at St Wilfrid’s Enterprise Centre on Royce Rd in Hulme. We are active in our community and interested in food. Here at GRUB we know that people are becoming increasingly concerned with where their food comes from, how it is grown, how it gets to their plates, and food waste in general. We share those concerns, which are the basis for our enterprise. We believe that local food matters. It reconnects people to the land and each other. It creates opportunities for communities to build skills, trading systems, networks and resilience. Local food and its redistribution can have many benefits for the local economy, community regeneration, health and the environment. Freshness of the produce is increased because it does not have to be shipped long distances, which helps the environment by reducing pollution caused by transport. We have a community allotment plot on Bethnall Drive, Fallowfield. Katherine from

Hulme Community Garden Centre ran a ‘Plotting the Future” course on site, covering the basics of getting a plot up and running. We will be running volunteer days on site through the Winter, to get all the structures built, ready for next year. Weekly volunteer days will be starting in Spring, which will be a great opportunity for people to learn the skills to grow their own food. In November, we started selling fresh produce to the residents of Manchester. We aim to source as locally as possible and our food boxes are available on a weekly basis. You can collect your boxes from St Wilfrid’s Enterprise Centre, off Royce Road in Hulme on any day, by arrangement. We are open 10 - 5 during the week and we’re working on getting a regular pick-up point sorted for Saturdays too. Boxes will be ready from Thursdays. We are hoping to use bike trailers so that we can deliver to areas of high subscribers, but until then we are running a collection-only service.

We are currently offering: Salad Bag A fresh selection of salad and herbs. The contents of the box varies depending on the seasonality of local produce. Only £3.00 a box or £78.00 for a 6 month subscription. Seasonal Veg Box A Selection of locally sourced fruit and veg. The contents of the box varys depending on the seasonality of local produce. Only £5.00 a box or £130.00 for a 6 month subscription. Home Made Box A selection of home made cakes and cookies courtesy of Marbella. Only £3.00 a box or £78.00 for a 6 month subscription. Happy Computer Christmas Christmas Present Ideas for the PC Owner in Your Life Christmas is coming! Is it time to drop some hints about presents you’d like? Or are you already running out of ideas for what to buy some people? Fret not, help is at hand. Here are some ideas for computer-related presents – for yourself or for someone else. 1. If you are thinking of buying a PC, make sure it is running Windows 7. On both desktops and laptops, it is a vast improvement on Vista. 2. Are you thinking of asking for or getting someone else a laptop? If so, please get in touch, as I have access to some very nice machines at very advantageous prices! Have a look at the specifications on my website (www.tlc-computing.co.uk). 3. Go wireless! Wireless networks are straightforward to set up - the main piece of hardware you will need is a wireless router. Just think about the flexibility it can give you. You won’t have to put the computer next to the telephone, you can have it where you want. All modern laptops are wireless ready, and desktop PCs can also be made wireless by installing a wireless card. A good present might be to give a “gift

voucher” (from TLC, naturally!) to supply, install, and set up a wireless system in someone’s home. Give me a call for details. 4. I know it’s not very exciting, but, along the same gift voucher lines, I could do a service and possibly add some extra RAM to a slow machine. Again, please get in touch – you could make someone’s Christmas! 5. USB Memory Sticks are always useful. They are good for backup storage (for all those precious photos, music collections, and documents). They are also a handy way of moving files from one PC to another. Students, teachers, and people who sometimes work from home and need to take files back to the office PC find them especially useful in that respect. Nowadays they can store a lot of files, and could make a useful stocking filler. Give me a call for prices. 6. For more serious backup and storage, portable Hard Disks should be considered. They work like memory sticks, but hold a lot more data. It’s good to get into the habit of regularly backing up files, so that if the worst happens and the PC’s hard drive

fails, at least the coursework/ dissertation/music collection/ photo albums won’t be lost. 7. Wireless printers are all the rage at the moment. One printer in the house can be accessed by all the PCs connected to the domestic network. 8. Still got a TV-style monitor, or know someone who’d really appreciate a flat-screen one? Prices are good at the moment, they take up much less space, and they’re more energy-efficient. Some even have built-in speakers. 9. What about a set of quality speakers for someone’s PC? They can really make a difference when watching catch-up TV, or listening to the radio over the internet, or playing your favourite tracks. 10. And finally … remember that VAT increases in January. Say no more! If I can help with any of the above, please get in touch. I can discuss ideas with you, as well as supply information about prices and services. I can be very discreet, and you can rest assured your Christmas surprise (if that’s what you want it to be) will be safe with me. Enjoy the Christmas Season, and I hope to hear from you. Christmas All Wrapped Up

Danielle Lowy from Rubbish Revamped shares low-cost ideas for festive gift-wrapping The season for giving and receiving gifts is well and truly upon us. Whether you are a shopping diva or plod around the shops with gritted teeth, those gifts will need wrapping. Now, a beautifully wrapped present is a joy to behold and adds to the delicious anticipation of opening the gift. But wouldn’t you rather focus your money on the content than the packaging? The solution is to make your own wrappings, and you can do this from things you would normally throw away. Community Index will get you started here with a simple guide to making a lovely gift bow. And it’s pretty enough to add to the Christmas tree after the gift’s been opened. • Ruler • Scissors 1. Measure and cut six strips 2cm wide across the top of your sheet. Each strip will be

You will need • An A5 piece of paper (Community Index size). Try a magazine cover, an old map, junkmail or leaflets • Glue • Stapler

2cm wide by 21cm long. 2. Keep three strips 21cm long, cut 2cm off two strips and 9 cm off the final strip. 3. Glue the middle of a strip and twist the ends to meet at a diagonal in the centre. Make figures of 8 like this with the five longest strips.

Festive Wrapping Ideas to try:

4. Starting with the three longest, layer the five strips at well spaced angles. Staple the centre to secure them. 5. Make a loop with the smallest strip and glue it in the centre. Make different size ribbons by using more strips, cut thinner. Say, 8 strips measured at 1.5cm wide.

Ignore expensive wrapping paper: use newspaper, comics, magazines, old maps

Jazz these up with funky yarns (you know that scarf you never knitted…?)

Tie on some buttons or beads from broken jewellery

Decorate newspaper-wrapped gifts with cut-out pictures or strips from shop-bought wrapping paper or old Christmas cards

Last year’s Christmas cards can be cut to make present tags

Tie a Christmas tree chocolate to the gift tag
