Here in Didsbury, more than 25 public and private gardens will open this year, in aid of St Anne’s Hospice and The Alzheimers Society. Last year 1,000 people, young and old, walked or cycled between the gardens and the event raised over £8,000 for good causes. The organisers hope to smash through the £25,000 barrier this year, which also happens to be the 40th Anniversary of St Anne’s Hospice.
Programmes (at £5) are on sale at Chorlton Bookshop on Wilbraham Road, Blossom Flowers on Manchester Road, Creative Recycling on Beech Road and Chorlton Plant Nursery on Vicars Road. If you need more information or have difficulty getting to Chorlton to buy programmes contact Merryn at dmcooke@btinternet.com or 861 0153.

Local artist, Sally Almond, who ran the school mosaics workshops will also be exhibiting some of her own sculptures that will soon be at The Eden Project where Sally will run workshops. The Didsbury Festival Saturday 11th June
The 32nd Didsbury Festival is fast approaching – Saturday 11th June - and the Festival Team is frantically putting the finishing touches to all the arrangements, ensuring a wonderful fun day out for the whole community. As always, the Festival begins with the Procession which leaves St Catherine’s School at 11.00 am and passes through the Village on its way to Didsbury Park. All the local primary schools and many other groups take part and the procession has grown in both quality and number with each passing year; though we (and the Police) feel it has now reached its maximum level with over one thousand participants. The theme this year is “Films and Movies and it promises to be a star-studded parade. It is amazing how much trouble is taken in producing costumes and what fantastic ideas some people come up with. We will not be awarding any Oscars but we do have two new trophies which have been generously donated for the procession. Following the arrival of the
procession in the park and the presentations, the entertainment in the arena begins.
children in the refreshment area and, of course, there is the funfair.
This year we have re-introduced the inter-pub Tug-o-War, which will be followed by the ever popular Zehara and her Gipsy Dancers. The young dancers of the Didsbury Children’s Theatre and the Broad Oak Cheerleaders will then entertain us with their energetic routines before we experience a gentler form of exercise with a Tai Chi Chuan demonstration. The afternoon rounds of with the final of the Inter-School Tag Rugby Competition which will be taking place throughout the day.
One of last year’s highlights which proved very popular with all members of the family was ‘Didsbury’s Got Talent’ and which will be repeated this year. Several bands have already been booked including ‘The Bet Shop Boys’.
Around the park we have all the familiar stalls which are run by the members of local organisations, schools and charity groups to raise funds for and awareness of their group’s activities. There will be plenty of activities to participate in - Lacrosse, Mini-Tennis, Little Kickers Football, and you can take on the former City goalkeeper, Eric Nixon, when you try to Beat the Goalie. There will also be craft activities for

A day out would not be complete without good food, and this seems to be one of the attractions of the Festival - the Asian food stalls, the Scout barbeque, the Fair Trade Cafe, the Hog Roast and the many stalls selling cakes, sandwiches and drinks. And for dogs everywhere there is an opportunity for you to bring your owner and enter them and yourselves in the Fun Dog Show where there are rosettes and prizes to be won. Entries can be made on the day until 12.45 pm. Looking forward to seeing you all on what we hope will be a bright, sunny day.
