The Miners’ Sweetheart By Mark McLaughlin

During the California gold rush, the child actress Charlotte “Lotta” Crabtree dazzled audiences with her wit and enthusiasm. She was barely eight years old when she began her career performing Irish jigs on makeshift tables at small mining camps scattered throughout the Sierra foothills. With her perky personality, infectious laugh and long, curly red hair she was the “Shirley Temple” of her time, an elfin entertainer who regaled the lonely miners with song and dance routines executed with skill and a bright smile. Her talents and abilities were formidable — as an adult, Lotta Crabtree would become the highest paid actress in America.

Mrs. Crabtree and Charlotte found lodging in San Francisco with some people they had met on the ship. In the meantime, John Crabtree had earned enough money to buy a boarding house in the Sierra foothill town of Grass Valley. He located his wife and child in San Francisco and moved them to the boarding house where Mary Ann became resigned to a life of drudgery, cooking and cleaning for the rough-andtumble miners. Born Charlotte Mignon Crabtree in New York in 1847, she was the first child of Mary Ann and John Ashworth Crabtree. John Crabtree, a bookstore owner, was not an ambitious businessman so when he heard the stories of easy riches to be made in the California gold rush he left his family and headed west. After several anxious months, Mrs. Crabtree received a message from her husband that she and Charlotte should meet him in San Francisco. They boarded a ship and sailed the perilous route around Cape Horn, but when they arrived in San Francisco John was nowhere to be found. He was out in the mining camps hoping to strike it rich.

Continued from Page 3 For Mrs. Crabtree, the only positive thing to come out of her hard-working grind in Grass Valley was her daughter’s brief association with Lola Montez, a worldrenown dancer and actress who also lived in Grass Valley during the early 1850s. Charlotte was already attending a local dance school, but history often credits Lola Montez with “discovering” the future “Lotta” Crabtree in 1854 when the girl was less than seven years old. Montez probably sang and danced for Charlotte, but stories that it was Lola’s inspired tutelage that launched little Lotta’s career are probably overblown. It’s more likely that linking the aspiring child actress to the legendary Montez was smart promotion and marketing. Either way, there is little doubt that Lola Montez encouraged Charlotte’s natural love of dance and theater. As fate would have it, both Lola and Charlotte left Grass Valley in 1855. Lola Montez needed money and was returning to the stage and a world-tour to Australia, while John Crabtree had itchy feet again. The Crabtree family bounced around northern California for a while before finally settling at the small mining community of Rabbit Creek, in Plumas County. Rabbit Creek was the heart of the “Lost Sierra” and the epicenter of what would become the longboard era of ski racing. At Rabbit Creek Mrs. Crabtree was once again stuck running a boarding

house while her husband tramped through the Sierra looking for golden opportunities. It was a hard and dreary life for Mary Ann, so when Matt Taylor, a musician and dancer, as well as a local saloon and theater manager, told her that her precocious daughter exhibited a special talent in dancing, she signed Charlotte up for lessons with him. Under Taylor’s close supervision, “Little Lotta” Charlotte Crabtree at quickly learned the age of 21 Photo Courtesy of The Library the intricate steps of Congress, and complicated dance rhythms that elevated her performance. During the 1850s, nearly half of California’s foreign-born population was Irish, so Lotta was taught jigs and other dances popular in Ireland. Before long Mary Ann realized that her daughter really did have the ability to become a professional stage actress, so when Matt Taylor organized an acting troupe that was going to tour the California mining camps, Mrs. Crabtree left a note for her absentee husband and took her daughter on the road. They traveled by mule or horseback from camp to camp where Lotta captivated audiences with her singing, dancing, and acting. It was an arduous lifestyle – they once rode 50 miles in one day – but Lotta was a natural entertainer and she enjoyed her performances. The young, baby-faced Lotta reminded many of the miners of Continued on Page 6

Increase Your Home’s Value

Whether you’ve purchased a new house or are just looking to invest in what is likely your largest asset, home improvements can make your living space more comfortable, functional and stylish. Homebuyers are looking for practical home amenities that allow them to live, work and play – such as dedicated home offices, backyard retreats, home gyms and more – without having to worry about any potential future restrictions caused by the pandemic, according to a survey by Zolo of more than 3,300 new homeowners and potential first-time buyers in 2022. Consider these popular upgrade ideas to create a space built for your family’s needs that can also increase resale value down the line. Home Office At the height of the pandemic, many professionals found themselves working remotely – a trend that continued as restrictions were lifted. In fact, 46% of survey respondents listed a dedicated office space as a must-have when purchasing a new home. When creating this space, keep function and efficiency top of mind. Build your home office around a desk – either standing or traditional – then consider additions like an ergonomic chair and keyboard, soft light desk lamp, mood-boosting plants and a white board to stay organized. Don’t forget to add flairs of personality like artwork, knick-knacks or photos of loved ones to make it your own. Skylights By improving the overall look and functionality of dark spaces, such as home offices where natural light can improve creativity and productivity, an option like skylights can increase the value of a home, and 55% of

new homebuyers rated skylights as desirable or essential, according to research from the National Association of Home Builders. For rooms that need brightening, skylights can free up wall space for storage while adding abundant natural light and increasing ventilation. An option like Velux No Leak Solar-Powered Fresh Air Skylights help rid indoor air of bacteria, volatile organic compounds and carbon dioxide. Over the long-term, high-quality skylights can also help reduce carbon emissions and home energy consumption, saving money on household bills, according to Urban Grade. Remote-controlled models can be opened to bring fresh air inside, and with light-filtering or room-darkening shades homeowners have maximum control over the exact amount of light they want. Plus, solar-powered shades come in more than 75 colors and patterns, allowing homeowners nearly endless customization options. Learn more at whyskylights.com. Backyard Retreat Perfect for hosting friends, dining al fresco or simply relaxing with the backdrop of nature, 48% of survey respondents cited a backyard retreat as a must-have home amenity. Start with a deck or patio then customize your outdoor living space to meet your family’s wants and needs. Weather-proof furniture can add comfort while features like outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, fans and lighting can create a connection to your indoor areas that add both style and function. Walk-In Pantry If you want to add a pantry in your kitchen, you’re not alone. Walk-in pantries found their way onto 48% of respondents’ lists of must-haves. To get started, consider your storage needs

to determine the amount of space you’ll require and remember to vary shelving heights to maximize space. Open shelving can also be combined with additional counter space, cabinets, pull-out organizers and other features to help match the design to the rest of your kitchen. Home Gym Another trend that rose in popularity amid the pandemic, home gyms can take on a variety of shapes and sizes, utilizing available space in the garage, basement, a spare bedroom or even the backyard. Providing more time to fit workouts into your schedule, home gyms can be customized with equipment most important for your lifestyle. From yoga mats, jump ropes and free weights to treadmills, ellipticals and benches and racks, your space, budget and goals can help in the creation or update of a dedicated, in-home workout space.

Making Summer Fun Safe Longer days and lighter schedules make summer perfect for relaxing, having fun outdoors and spending time with loved ones. However, more physical activity and time spent in the sun can also translate to increased health and safety risks. As you and your family enjoy the warmth and sunshine while swimming, biking, grilling, playing on the playground and more this summer, remember these precautions from the experts at the American Heart Association. Watch for Signs of Heat Stress On hot summer days, be alert for signs of heat illnesses, such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Even when it doesn’t seem extreme, heat and humidity can take a toll. Some signs of heat-related illness include muscle pain, cramps or spasms; heavy sweating; paleness; dizziness; headache; nausea or vomiting; confusion; fainting or unconsciousness; high body temperature (greater than 100 F) with dry skin; and

rapid pulse. If you experience any of these symptoms, take a break, drink some water and find shade or air conditioning to cool off. Stay Hydrated Staying hydrated is important for optimal body functioning, especially during the hot and humid months. If you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors, frequently consuming water and foods with high water content – melons, lettuce and cucumbers, for example – can help replace the fluids lost via sweat. In addition, be aware of the signs and symptoms of mild dehydration, including a dry or sticky mouth; dry, cool skin; headache; or muscle cramps. Learn CPR As summertime activities expose people of all ages to risks, it’s important to be trained in CPR – or cardiopulmonary

resuscitation – an emergency lifesaving procedure that is performed when the heart stops beating. If performed immediately, it can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival, according to the American Heart Association. However, only about 40% of people who experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrest receive help before professionals arrive. Because about 74% of adult and 87.5% of child out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes, you will likely be trying to save the life of someone you love – a child, spouse, parent or friend – if called upon to perform CPR. Hands-Only CPR is recommended for members of the general public. Call 9-1-1, or send someone to do so, then push hard and fast in the center of the person’s chest until medical assistance arrives. Use an AED, if available, following the prompts. Conventional CPR is the next step and involves chest compressions and mouthto-mouth breathing but should only be used by health care professionals and those trained to perform it correctly. Protect Skin from the Sun While it’s easy to get caught up enjoying activities outdoors, remember to take steps to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays. Limit your time in the sun, especially during the midday hours when the rays are strongest, and wear sunscreen to help reduce your risk of sunburn. Experts recommend sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Wearing sunglasses, a hat and cool, long-sleeved clothing can further limit exposure when outdoors for long periods of time. Swim Safely Whether enjoying the pool, beach, lake or river, bodies of water can be dangerous if appropriate precautions aren’t taken. In fact, drowning is among the top five causes of unintentional injury death in the United States, according to the CDC. Avoid swimming alone, especially in natural bodies of water that aren’t clear and may present strong currents or underwater obstacles, and don’t overestimate your swimming ability.
