A Life-Changing Experience
By Tim Hastings
It has often been said that “change is the only constant.” Adaptability is essential for growth and success in a 21st-century world. South Central Kentucky is a region that has always embraced the challenge of change. Today, a vibrant partnership of the region’s communities and counties ensures South Central Kentucky’s continued growth and prosperity. National Geographic Adventure magazine has described Bowling Green, the center of the region, as a place that “could inspire a complete and total life change.” Indeed, the tools are in place here for new residents and businesses to join, and add to, an already thriving region. Some of the advantages of Bowling Green and South Central Kentucky include: • A cost of living that is less than the national average. • Housing costs that are 20.6 percent lower than the national average. • A location on I-65 within 600 miles of almost half the U.S. population. • The lowest cost of doing business in the eastern half of the United States, and the seventh-lowest overall business cost in the country. • A nationally recognized university, Western Kentucky University, providing opportunities for higher education and workforce development. • A gross domestic product that is 6.4 percent higher than the national average. • Award-winning public school districts, as well as a variety of private school choices. • A progressive and welcoming business environment, with local economic development partners who work together to aggressively recruit new business. • A beautiful location in the rolling hills of the Green River Valley, offering endless opportunities in the great outdoors.

A community, however, is only as good as its people, and South Central Kentucky’s people are its greatest strength. For Carl Chaney, named Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2008 Small Business Person of the Year for successfully converting his fifth-generation family dairy farm into a popular tourist attraction, the relationships he’s developed are the greatest part of living and working in South Central Kentucky. “My wife and I have had to work longer hours since starting this business,” Chaney said. “But we both agree that getting to know the great people of this area is the best part of our life.”

CHAIRMAN’S
Comments
I am honored to serve as the 2009 Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, which is nationally recognized as one of the top three chambers of our size in the nation for excellence by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives. I have a strong belief in our community and see my position as an opportunity to take an active role in the growth and success of Bowling Green and South Central Kentucky. What eases my job is the well-established strength of our community. We continue to be nationally recognized because Bowling Green is a great place to live, work, and play. Here are just a few of those rankings: National Geographic Adventure honored us as one of the best places to live and play in 2007; Site Selection Magazine ranked us sixth in the nation for communities of our size for industry location and expansion projects in 2007; and Forbes Magazine ranked us as 12th out of 179 small cities named the “Best Small Places for Business and Careers.” We’re also extremely proud of our award-winning school systems — from our city and county districts, to our private schools, to our community and technical colleges and our university. A comprehensive list of all rankings our community has received would fill many pages of this magazine, but here are a few more reasons why our community is successful. Our economy remains strong, as we’re ranked 32nd among 363 metropolitan statistical areas in terms of real gross metro product growth rates by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. At 3.7 percent as of mid-2008, our GMP is double the average rate of MSAs and the national gross domestic product rate. And finally, as of June 2008, our employment rate grew 1.8 percent, for which we are ranked 33rd in the nation. But national rankings and high growth rates aren’t all that make Bowling Green and South Central Kentucky a great place. Our strong sense of community and our progressive mindset have set us on the path to make us even better than we are today. From the downtown revitalization plans, which include a professional baseball team and world-class baseball stadium, along with an impressive performing arts center and our already completed Circus Square Park; to our outstanding educational institutions that span from prekindergarten to graduate degrees at Western Kentucky University; to our commitment to regional economic development, an effort that is enhanced by the Chamber’s new menu of services program, we are a thriving community that impacts the futures of all who live here. For these reasons and many more, Bowling Green and South Central Kentucky are not just places for success for industries and businesses, but also for those seeking excellent educational, cultural, and professional opportunities, and for those who choose to raise their families here. The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to be a part of the successes here, and we welcome you to join us.

The South Central Kentucky partnership has become the envy of the entire Commonwealth. — Warren County Judge Executive Michael Buchanon
With the development of a regional marketing plan, launched in 2004, the Bowling Green Area Chamber now serves nine counties. Through this regional partnership, the Chamber can now attract more site selectors and developers with the ability to meet multiple, varying site requirements. The expanded service area blends the urban benefits of Bowling Green, like infrastructure, education, and technology, with the space, large workforce, and appeal of the rural areas and smaller communities of neighboring counties. “The idea behind the regional plan is that we are a much stronger economic development force if we are able to market more than one county,” said Jessica Thompson, communications director for the Chamber. The Kentucky Transpark, an illustration of this expanded focus, is a regional commerce and business park north of Bowling Green in Warren County. Currently in Phase 1, 900 of its 1,200 acres have been developed so far. Supported by a partnership of more than 20 county and municipal governments, the Transpark capitalizes on the region’s multiple strengths, including location, available space, technological infrastructure, transportation, and education. The Transpark’s benefits are also reaching the entire region, including new jobs, increased sales tax revenues, and the attraction of new service businesses. The Chamber continues to plan new services for South Central Kentucky, having launched in July 2008 an á la carte menu of economic development services for their partner counties. Since the different counties have different needs, the Chamber has hired a director of regional development, Miller Slaughter, to guide the counties in choosing what services best fit their particular needs. At a news conference announcing this menu of services program, Warren County Judge Executive Michael Buchanon said, “Our neighbors are a part of our success. The South Central Kentucky partnership has become the envy of the entire Commonwealth. This partnership is a success because we recognize that job growth in Bowling Green spins off to job growth in our neighbors’ communities.” Edmonson County Judge Executive N.E. Reed agreed. “This is a great opportunity for the counties of South Central Kentucky. We consider this to be the number one place in the state for industry. What our great working relationship with our partnership has offered us is the opportunity to have professional representation at a cost that smaller counties can afford.” Judge Reed continued, “If we can’t locate a business in Edmonson County, we’re working with all the other counties and cities to find a home for that business in South Central Kentucky.”
Chamber ACCOMPLISHMENTS 07-08 The Chamber enjoyed a successful past year and is building on those successes to make 2009 even better. Those accomplishments include:
• The American Chamber of Commerce Executives named the Chamber one of the top three chambers in the nation in the $500,000 to $1 million dues category.
• The Chamber relocated to a state-of-the-art, $4 million headquarters. The grand opening event was later recognized as “Outstanding Special Event of the Year” by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives.
• Since January 1, 2007, the Chamber participated in 21 new and expanded industries announcements for South
Central Kentucky over the course of 22 months. These announcements resulted in the creation of more than 2,500 new jobs and an investment of more than $100 million in the region. • The Chamber conducted a year-round recruitment campaign, along with staff efforts, to reach a goal of 170 new partners. They exceeded that goal with 182 new partners recruited and finished the year with a retention rate of 84 percent, which is above the national average. • The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives presented the Chamber with the KCCE Excellence Award for Outstanding Membership Retention in 2008. • In 2008, the Chamber received five awards for its promotional materials, including awards from the American Chamber of Commerce Executives, the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives, and the Southern Economic Development Council.

DOWNTOWN REDEVLOPMENT Time’s Not Standing Still in Historic Downtown Bowling Green
The Downtown Redevelopment Authority (DRA) is leading the charge to maintain and enhance the growth and revitalization of this important part of the community. The DRA’s 2002 Master Plan saw completion of several major projects in 2008, as well as the kick-off of even more. According to Cheryl Blaine, executive director of the DRA, downtown revitalization is critical to the effort of attracting new development and employers to Bowling Green. “Corporations are looking for quality of life and atmosphere, and a community’s downtown is one of the first places they look,” she explained. “The downtown redevelopment promotes a great community atmosphere as we create a wonderful place to play, eat, work, and live.” Bowling Green Mayor Elaine Walker agrees. “It is thrilling that the City of Bowling Green will be able to see a significant revitalization of the downtown area in just a few years,” she said. “It will totally change the complexion of the downtown and enhance its historic elements.”

• The long-awaited Circus Square was completed and enjoyed a grand opening in June 2008. Circus Square features a festival ground and park with a kid-friendly central fountain, an area that can be converted to a stage for concerts and events. Devin Miller, photographer for CommunityLink, caught the excitement of the grand opening on camera. “I saw more than a hundred kids playing in the fountain with their parents watching. Every few minutes a car would come up and a family would come out, up until around 9 p.m. My reaction after three days is if the city found out how much people loved the park, they might charge admission!” • In 2008, the DRA also began the renovation of 601 State Street, a large historic building located on Circus Square. The facility will eventually house the offices of the DRA and the Bowling Green Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and it will include leased mixeduse development. • A minor league baseball facility broke ground in the spring of 2008. It’s scheduled to host its first game in the spring of 2009. • A performing arts center is scheduled to break ground in the spring of 2009. • Further development in and around Circus Square over the next five years will include a hotel, parking garage, mixed-use development, residential areas, and townhomes.

Top SpotforeRetirees By Carol Cummings
Bowling Green is receiving national recognition as a hot spot for retirees to shop, dine, live, work, and play. In fact, Warren Bland, professor of geography at California State University and author of Retire in Style: 60 Outstanding Places Across the USA and Canada, has officially listed the community as one of the “Top 10 Value Towns for Retirees.” In ranking Bowling Green, Bland considered 12 important criteria: landscape, climate, quality of life, cost of living, transportation, retail services, healthcare, community services, cultural activities, recreational activities, work/volunteer activities, and crime rate. “Bowling Green’s favorable ranking is due to its low cost of living and many other positive attributes,” Bland explained. “It is a relatively safe community that has a university, which is very significant in terms of adding cultural opportunities one wouldn’t normally encounter in a small community. Bowling Green ranks highly because it has a combination of positive amenities that are available much more cheaply than in other locations. If you are looking for a small-town feeling with many extras, then Bowling Green could be the perfect place for you.”

American Red Cross Brings “Vettetastic” Event to Bowling Green The South Central Kentucky Chapter of the American Red Cross has discovered an exciting new way to bring the Corvette to South Central Kentucky. Vettetastic, a public art project, is a new biannual fundraising event in which sponsors work with artists of their choice to decorate, paint, and adorn a 1:2:8 fiberglass scale model of a Corvette. The first event, with exhibits displayed in the summer of 2008, featured 12 ’57 Corvettes, along with a myriad of special activities, including the publishing of a coffee table book, treasure hunts, self-guided road course tour maps, a ’50s preview party, people’s choice awards, and more. The completed cars will be sold in a special event auction. In 2009, the Red Cross will begin selling the unfinished models of the ’63 split window coupe. Artists will design the new models, which will be displayed in 2010. Proceeds from Vettetastic will be used to support the Red Cross mission of providing relief to victims of disaster and helping people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Funds will also support programs like Armed Forces Emergency Services, Health and Safety Education, Disaster Services, Youth Disaster Response, and International Services.

Sustainable Communities
Going GREEN in Bowling Green By Carol Cummings
In Bowling Green, city government and area businesses are concerned about protecting the environment and are taking a proactive approach that extends even to the community’s youngest citizens. According to Kim Lancaster of the City of Bowling Green, public education on protecting the environment begins at an early age. As part of the “Keep It Clean Bowling Green” initiative, the city goes into the school systems to educate students and encourage them to prevent litter pollution, engage in recycling, and improve the county’s water quality. This public outreach is just one of the ways Bowling Green is meeting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s mandate to develop programs that minimize the effects of nonpoint source pollution, which includes waste from parking lots, roads and rooftops, residential areas, construction sites, farms, and septic systems. An informed community leads to an involved community, and many area businesses are also taking up the challenge to protect our environment. Mike Littlefield of SCA Personal Care says his company is ranked as the second greenest company in the world by EIRIS (Ethical Investment Research Services), the leading global provider of independent research into social, environmental, and ethical practices of companies. “Some factors contributing to SCA’s high ranking included FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)-certified forests and paper, the high proportion of recycled fiber utilized in production, clear policies on avoiding illegal logging, and the replacement of oil and coal with carbon-neutral fuels,” Littlefield explained. 16 Bowling Green, Kentucky 2009 EDITION
At the local level, Littlefield says SCA is working hard to control and manage safety and environmental hazards. In addition, the company has implemented a recycling program that has become the model for other personal hygiene sites. “In 2007, the program successfully diverted more than 2,500 tons of waste materials from entering local landfills and generated more than $465,000 in revenue for the organization,” Littlefield said. “We also work with raw material suppliers and vendors to ensure certain hazardous materials and chemicals are precluded from Bowling Green operations to protect our consumers, as well as our team members inside the plant.” Kelly Wiseman of Liberty said their business is the area’s first certified green printer. Liberty was certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) at the beginning of 2008 and was certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) a few months later.
“These certifications mark the beginning of Liberty’s efforts to do our part in sustaining the environment,” stated Wiseman. “Doing our part means undergoing a culture shift.” FSC is an international organization whose mission is to promote responsible management of the world’s forests. The SFI program certifies companies based on a comprehensive system of principles, objectives, and performance measures that were developed by professional foresters, conservationists, and scientists. “We specifically sought to achieve FSC/ SFI Chain of Custody certification because we view it as our responsibility as a market leader to not only support the practice of responsible forestry, but to provide our customers with access to paper that is verified as environmentally conscious,” said Wiseman. “We take the responsibility to offer our clients environmentally friendly print options seriously. Doing our part gives our customers an opportunity to do their part in taking care of our environment.” Besides having an extensive recycling program, Western Kentucky University intends to take the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) in environmentally friendly or “green” design for the construction of a new building for the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. Site work is under way at Normal Drive and Regents Avenue for a new building that will replace Tate Page Hall. Construction began in the fall of 2008, and the building has a targeted completion date of December 2010. This facility will be one of the first at a public university in Kentucky to strive for LEED certification, a rating system that measures sustainable design features.
The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce is making an effort to recognize its partners who are taking cost-saving steps toward sustainability in its Chamber Green Scene. Businesses can submit articles to be included in the Chamber’s weekly electronic newsletter and on the Chamber Blog. For more information, call 270-781-3200. Chamber partners* who have already been recognized in the Chamber Green Scene are • Inkjet Express: Recycling ink jet cartridges • Bowling Green Municipal Utilities: Offering energy efficiency kits and partnering with local nurseries • Service One Credit Union: Purchasing the lumber from the historic Poole’s Mill for re-use in its “greenâ€? addition to its Campbell lane facility • Warren County Public Schools: Creating “energy teamsâ€? of students to educate others and encourage involvement • Executive Public Relations: Launching a “Trees for T-Shirtsâ€? campaign, planting a tree for the campaign and offering an organic t-shirt line • Coffee News: Using soy-based ink on 30 percent post-consumer recycled paper • Proforma Cornerstone Concepts, LLC: Providing environmentally responsible promotional products • Material Handling, Inc.: Helping customers reduce costs by offering electric forklifts * As of July 2008.
The City-County Planning Commission of Warren County has extensive plans for greenways. When the commission’s first project is completed, there will be a fourmile trail, originating in downtown Bowling Green and connecting four parks, two elementary schools, and one shopping center.
As part of the “Keep It Clean Bowling Green initiative, the city goes into the school systems to educate students and encourage them to prevent litter pollution, engage in recycling, and improve the county’s water quality.

SOUTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY’S
JUDGE EXECUTIVES By Jennifer Bull
Strong Believers in the Region’s Promise
Hon. Michael Buchanon, Warren County: “We help stimulate economic development growth, which helps to provide our local economy with great business. We make the short list more often because of our regional economic development efforts.” The county judge executives of South Central Kentucky have various characteristics in common, including an abiding love of their home county and their strong belief in the great quality of life to be found in the region. Helping move their communities forward, many of the county judge executives have far-reaching goals for growth and development. The judge executive acts as the presiding officer and member of the Fiscal Court and serves as the county’s executive and administrative official.
Hon. Bobby Young, Allen County “We continue to work on beautifying this county. We’re also working on infrastructure to make it more accessible. I believe Allen County is one of the best places in the world.”
Hon. Davie Greer, Barren County “My main goal is to make sure that land use planning is in place for Barren County. I’ve been a judge for six years, and I have nothing but positive things to say about our county. We have a wonderful quality of life here.”
Hon. David Fields, Butler County “Our biggest goal is trying to get some industry back in. We’re 25 miles north of Bowling Green. You could have the best of both worlds. You could live out in the country and in 15–20 minutes, you’re in a major city. We have some really good people in Butler County. “Why would a regional partnership be beneficial to all counties? Bowling Green and vice versa. All the people involved in economic development are great people working to bring in new business and retain our existing businesses.”
Hon. N.E. Reed, Edmonson County “I’m serving my 15th year as judge. I love my work, and I have definitive goals. One of these goals is to make us as friendly and competitive with other regions or states and to try to afford our citizens the best opportunity to excel in their business or profession. “Our regional development efforts have been successful because of the relationships among all our elected officials — judges and mayors. This has been very important in promoting our regional accomplishments and has been noted statewide.”
Hon. Logan Chick, Logan County “I’ve enjoyed my work, and I’d like to serve one more term as judge. I’m really proud of our county’s accomplishments, such as the new convention center, and the natural beauty of the area, such as the watershed lakes. “We’ve been very active in industrial development already, and we feel that, with working with Warren County and the other counties, we can take our resources and make a joint effort to benefit all involved.”
Bowling Green is now one of only 40 cities in the United States where both the police and fire departments are accredited.
Hon. Greg Wilson, Metcalfe County
“Metcalfe County continues to be a strong supporter of economic development here and throughout the region. We work hard to make our county an appealing place to live, work, and play.”
Hon. Wilbur Graves, Monroe County “Monroe County is known as the pearl of the Cumberland foothills. With this in mind, as I start on my second term, my goal is to develop riverfront property to attract tourism.”
Mayor Elaine Walker, Bowling Green “It’s no surprise to me that Bowling Green has been nationally recognized for its business and career opportunities. The atmosphere here is one of success, backed by a strong work ethic and supportive community. Atmos Energy Corporation employees are often seen cooking for not-for-profit organizations’ fundraising events in South Central Kentucky. “We have a cooking trailer, which is well-known in the area,” said Atmos Regional Vice President Bill Greer. “We send the trailer out to grill meals for groups such as Junior Achievement, the Soapbox Derby, and for Western Kentucky University athletic events.” Atmos also matches employee donations to the United Way. Greer is a past recipient of the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year Award. He said his family is a major reason he does volunteer work. “Bowling Green is a wonderful place,” Greer said. “My family has benefited so much through our school system, Special Olympics, and the arts. The community has given our family so much; it’s only right that we would do our part to help make the community even stronger.”
Bowling Green Municipal Utilities Bowling Green Municipal Utilities (BGMU) employees hold work site events to raise funds for volunteer organizations. “We may have a breakfast, a luncheon, or raffle in the employee lounge,” said BGMU Manager of Business Development and Marketing Miles McDaniel. Kentucky Transpark By Tim Hastings
Auto Industry Leaders Praise Bowling Green Benefits Strategic location and a large labor pool convinced a new player in South Central Kentucky manufacturing to build a plant in the Kentucky Transpark, a state-of-the-art, high-tech commerce and business park located north of Bowling Green, approximately one mile from I-65. “I was told that this location will be a core logistic area in the state of Kentucky,” said Hiroshi Senga, president of American Howa Kentucky, Inc. “My understanding is that the Transpark was designed with the intention of bringing multiple new companies into the Bowling Green/ Warren County area, both automotive and related industries. With the Transpark being between two nearby I-65 access points, this will help us reduce future logistical costs.” The automotive sun shade and dash insulator producer said the company’s location in the Transpark also lets him recruit skilled labor from the large workforce in Warren County and surrounding areas. American Howa Kentucky, Inc., announced a multimillion-dollar expansion just five months after its grand opening in March 2008. A consultant and former vice president of Cannon Automotive Solutions, Inc., said similar benefits convinced his company to build their first industry in the region at the Kentucky Transpark. “We were looking for a site that would position us to better serve a growing customer base along the I-65 manufacturing corridor,” Cannon Consultant Ron Truant said. “Bowling Green is geographically well-positioned within easy access to our customers.” The city’s commitment to worker training was also attractive. “The City of Bowling Green is committed to training and development of the workforce,” Truant said. “We found them to be very well organized and focused on securing new investment. They presented a ‘can do attitude.’ The plant launched on schedule and is now ramping up production.” 24 Bowling Green, Kentucky 2009 EDITION

ICC Locations By Tim Hastings
Business Booms at Innovation and Commercialization Center
Business is booming at the Innovation and Commercialization Center (ICC) in Bowling Green. “We’ve created an environment designed to support national and international knowledge-based companies,” said ICC Director Buddy Steen. “This environment facilitates the creation, growth, recruitment, and retention of these types of companies.” The ICC is part of Western Kentucky University’s Center for Research and Development, which Steen also heads. The Commercialization Center offers its tenants “plug and play,” state-of-the-art facilities with fiber-optic Internet connectivity. “By design, if you locate your company in our facility, the world is flat,” Steen says. Currently the ICC is host to 20 expanding knowledge-based companies and three WKU Applied Research Laboratories in its 300,000-square-foot facility. HeathCo Corporation, which already markets its specialty electric products in 10,000 retail stores worldwide, is one of ICC’s newest tenants. HeathCo President Keith Springs said proximity to Western Kentucky University perfectly positions the company to continue to grow through product innovation. Two Chinese companies, Kenmold Co., Ltd., and Beijing Greenleading Energy Technology Development Co., Ltd., are also moving into the ICC. Steen predicts great success for them. “The Center is committed to working as a business accelerator to advance their network and build their connections in this region,” Steen said. In just three years of operation, the ICC has had two spectacular graduates from the Business Accelerator program: Wind Energy Corporation and Blue Pharmaceuticals. Both companies started at the Center and grew so quickly that they were forced to expand their facilities into vacant manufacturing plants in the region.

Call Centers Come to The People Are the Draw South Central Kentucky
By Tim Hastings
Business and industry leaders agree: South Central Kentucky is the perfect choice for them because of the quality of the region’s workforce. That’s why N.E.W. Customer Service Companies, Inc., decided to locate in Bowling Green in 2008, and it’s why both N.E.W. and Perot Systems announced expansions that same year! In May 2008, N.E.W. announced that it would bring a unique work-at-home opportunity to South Central Kentucky, seeking out customer care representatives for one of N.E.W.’s largest clients, DIRECTV. The region was so receptive to N.E.W.’s program
that the Virginia-based company launched a second group of company-paid training classes in October, adding another 160 jobs to the region and bringing the total number of N.E.W. jobs to 320 by May 2009. “The caliber of the candidates and the tremendous support and enthusiasm we have received from the community have been the deciding factors in expanding the Bowling Green work-at-home training site,” said Ray Zukowski, N.E.W.’s senior vice president of customer experience. Having been at the Western Kentucky University Center for Research and Development for more than five years, Perot Systems understands the value of doing business in South Central Kentucky. In the fall of 2008, Perot Systems added
technology service desk operations to its facility, hiring an additional 90 associates to assist with technology services and service desk functions. “We have been very impressed by the skill and professional expertise of job candidates in the area,” said Lynda Gera, service desk manager of the company’s new Technology Infrastructure Solutions team in Bowling Green. In addition to N.E.W. and Perot Systems, two call center enterprises have found homes in South Central Kentucky. TeleServices Direct opened a call center in Bowling Green in 2007 and currently employs 150 full-time and 50 part-time workers in Bowling Green. Sitel opened a call center in Glasgow in 2008 and expects to employ 581 South Central Kentucky residents when fully operational.

SEE MORE EXPANSION
We are noted in our industry for superior quality products, and we have the skilled workforce here to produce them. — Chris Gentry, Consultant, Financial Officer, Halton
Central Location and Effi cient Workforce Are Fostering Prosperity Two corporations making substantial expansions to their operations in South Central Kentucky in 2007 cited workforce and location as the catalysts. LORD Corporation Director of Industrial Manufacturing Steve Pattison said the company chose to expand in the area due in part to the willingness of the workforce to improve efficiency. “Over a couple of years and a series of blitzes of concentrated activity, the plant reduced the number of machine operators needed to produce one part for an office chair from four operators to one,” Pattison said. “This was an example of the type of continuous improvement that goes on among the workforce in Bowling Green.” The company is in the midst of a $2.2 million expansion and has hired 20 new full time workers since 2007. Halton Financial Officer Chris Gentry cited the availability of a skilled workforce and the region’s central location as reasons the company expanded its operations. Halton recently doubled its plant size and created approximately 60 new full-time jobs.
“We are noted in our industry for superior quality products, and we have the skilled workforce here to produce them,” Gentry said. “We are centrally located near major highways, making it easy to distribute our products throughout the Americas.” Other firms recently expanding their South Central Kentucky operations include: • DESA Heating Products, LLC, brought hundreds of jobs back to Bowling Green from China. DESA also announced the move of its Power Tools Division manufacturing and distribution operations to Bowling Green, adding another 100+ jobs. • Berry Plastics invested more than $10.4 million and created 26 new jobs in Bowling Green. • Morgantown Manufacturing invested more than $750,000 and created 50 new jobs in Morgantown. • Transtek Recycling invested $3.7 million and created 50 new jobs in Morgantown. • Whayne Supply Company broke ground for their new 65,000-square-foot branch office in Bowling Green in December 2007.
The company plans for an additional 15 employees to be housed at this new facility, raising the personnel count to 60 total employees. • American Howa Kentucky, Inc., announced an expansion valued at more than $12 million for their Kentucky Transpark facility and will create an additional 24 new jobs. • Perot Systems added up to 90 new jobs to its current Bowling Green facility for its technical service desk operations. • N.E.W. Customer Service Companies, Inc., added an additional 160 jobs to its work-athome program, growing the company’s local workforce to 320 by May 2009.

Boost White Collar Workforce
Home-grown entrepreneurs and Western Kentucky University’s recently accredited program granting the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree are helping create white collar jobs in South Central Kentucky. White collar jobs are developed at the university’s Innovation and Commercialization Center (ICC) in Bowling Green. Hitcents, a youthful ICC occupant, employs 25 computer programmers, seven graphic designers, an accountant, a bookkeeper, and other professionals. Twin brothers Chris and Clinton Mills founded the technology company in 1999 in Bowling Green before graduating high school. Inc. magazine named Hitcents one of the 500 fastestgrowing privately owned companies in the United States in 2007. The relationship between ICC companies and WKU is mutually beneficial: ICC companies count on WKU for support and a skilled workforce, while WKU engineering students get a chance to hone their skills at ICC companies. “We try to match up our students with the companies in the center,” said WKU Ogden College of Science and Engineering Dean Blaine Ferrell. “You’ve got to have an engineer if you want to create a new product.” WKU, which gives its engineering degree jointly with the Universities of Kentucky and Louisville, also offers engineering students a minor in business to help them become entrepreneurs. However, even working for someone else is typically more lucrative for WKU engineering grads than it is for engineers with other degrees. “We had one graduate earn a starting salary $12,000 higher per year than engineers with non-accredited degrees,” Ferrell said.
1999: Chris and Clinton Mills create Hitcents. 2002: Hitcents has its ribbon cutting as the first

2003: Bowling Green-based Houchens Industries, a

2005: Hitcents has 21 employees and 5,500 square feet of office space.
2007 August: Hitcents is listed 191st among the
500 fastest-growing companies by Inc. magazine. The Mills brothers are also named fifth among the top CEOs under 30 years old by Inc.

Two Chinese Companies Choose Bowling Green for Their U.S. Operations
Bowling Green has not only proven to be an attractive location for new and relocating U.S. companies, but has also attracted attention internationally. Two Chinese companies, Greenleading and Kenmold, have chosen Bowling Green for their U.S. locations. No other city in Kentucky can boast of hosting businesses from China, which is a testament to the attractiveness of the Bowling Green community. With the community, the university, and the Chamber of Commerce all working together to provide companies with what they need to succeed, it’s no surprise that foreign companies are now drawn to the area. Beijing-based Greenleading Energy Technology Development Co. Ltd. is a large-scale producer of heat transfer equipment, including plate heat exchangers, valve products, and air coolers. Greenleading was drawn to the area by the proximity of Western Kentucky University’s Center for Research and Development and chose to place their initial U.S. headquarters and sales office in the Innovation and Commercialization Center (ICC).
34 Bowling Green, Kentucky 2009 EDITION
Starting with 10 employees, Greenleading expects future growth. Greenleading is a supplier of OEM products in China and is a distribution supplier in the Asia-Pacific area, as well as being a top supplier in Denmark, Finland, and Germany. Committed to being the leader in environmentally sound heating technologies, Greenleading is poised for success in an increasingly green-conscious world. Kenmold Co. Ltd. is a steel and plastic mold tooling, molding, and total solution service company. Choosing Bowling Green as the new location for its U.S. sales and marketing office, Kenmold will also locate in the ICC at Western Kentucky University’s Center for Research and Development. The goal is that the ICC will help the company accelerate its business in the United States, as companies increasingly choose to outsource their mold manufacturing and new product development focuses. Indeed, Kenmold already has clients in South Central Kentucky, including SpanTech, located in Glasgow. Additionally, Dynastrosi Laboratories, also located in the ICC, plans to use Kenmold as a supplier.

Strategic Business Alliance
Chamber Helps Employers, Workforce, and Students Master the Ways of the Working World
The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce helps business leaders identify their weaknesses, assists in manufacturing surveys, and conducts work ethic education to help the region’s workers achieve their goals.
36 Bowling Green, Kentucky 2009 EDITION
The Chamber’s Strategic Business Alliance facilitates training on various business topics for small businesses and nonprofit organizations. Membership is available free of charge to Chamber partners. Among its many educational programs, the Alliance trains entrepreneurs to improve business presentation skills, human resources, information on taxes, networking, and marketing. “They were timid at first,” Charles M. Moore Insurance Agency Account Executive Tim Goss said of two business owners who attended the training. “After they had practiced describing their business to several people, they were doing well.”
KAM Survey The Chamber sponsors the comprehensive Kentucky Association of Manufacturers (KAM) survey, which provides employers with details about operations and benefits in related businesses in their region, such as number of employees, hours worked, number of shifts, bonuses, insurance coverage, annual salaries by industry, investment plans offered, and more. Human resources directors say the annual wage and benefits survey helps them provide equitably and competitively for their employees. “We can compare our own policies and procedures to the results of this survey,” said Devin Harper, human resource leader for Logan Aluminum Inc. “This will assist us all in improving the workplace environment.”

Work Ethic Seal Program The Chamber collaborates with Junior Achievement to emphasize the importance of a good work ethic to high school seniors in seven counties. Specifically, the program focuses on fostering a quality frequently forgotten in career preparation: personal responsibility. Earning the Work Ethic Seal signifies that a graduate has demonstrated understanding and practice of some basic skills required by businesses. Criteria include maintaining a 2.4 or better GPA, with no failures; two or fewer unexcused absences/tardies; a record free of disciplinary actions; and participation in two or more extracurricular activities. “We believe this will make our overall workforce better,” said Mekesha Montgomery, chair of the Work Ethic Seal division of the Chamber’s Workforce Development Committee, which oversees the program. “As seniors graduate and go into the workforce, we hope they will teach these skills to others.” www.bgchamber.com 37
The Chamber sponsors the comprehensive Kentucky Association of Manufacturers (KAM) survey, which provides employers with details about operations and benefits in related businesses in their region.
2007 KAM Highlights Statewide: Manufacturing • The average Kentucky manufacturing employee annual base salary rose 3.7 percent over the previous year to $45,094. • The state manufacturing community produces $27 billion in goods annually. • Manufacturing accounts for 97 percent of Kentucky exports.
Southern Kentucky Region • Respondents reported fairly low annual turnover rates in 2007, with 35.7 percent of the companies reporting turnover rates between 1 and 10 percent. • More than 41 percent of companies surveyed provide annual bonuses. • Nearly 60 percent of companies surveyed offer a 401(k) or defined contribution plan.

South Central Kentucky Works for Small Business University, Chamber of Commerce Help Small Businesses Thrive By Tim Hastings
Small business developers in South Central Kentucky attribute their success in the region to a number of reasons, but frequently cite WKU’s small business advisors, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, and old-fashioned cooperation between the two entities as the biggest boosts. Dairyman Carl Chaney, the Chamber’s 2008 Small Business Person of the Year, said Western Kentucky University small business advisors recommended he get the word out quickly to his neighbors and government officials when he decided to turn his farm into a tourist attraction. They advised Chaney to be clear on exactly what he intended to do up front and to provide visuals on what his project would look like. “We had a photo from a farm magazine of the type of new building we were going to put on the farm,” Chaney said. “We visited our neighbors and showed them the picture.”
Because of Chaney’s legwork and preparation, the county zoning board quickly approved his idea. “We did not have one person speak against the plan,” Chaney noted. The fifth-generation farmer now tells the story of dairy farming to thousands of visitors (including many of his neighbors) annually at Chaney’s Dairy Barn near Bowling Green. Regina Webb, founder of Regina Webb Salon and Spa in Bowling Green, said partnership in the Chamber of Commerce is a major boost to her business. She believes an active partnership is the best way to reap the most from what the Chamber has to offer. “To benefit from the Chamber you have to be a benefit to it,” Webb asserted. “I host Chamber gatherings at my salon where I can showcase my business and introduce my staff. Being a member of the Chamber gives you credibility.”
www.bgchamber.com 41
Her partnership in the Chamber has helped Webb develop unique ways to promote her business. Her salon’s innovations include allowing clients to make appointments online and a customer loyalty program. Charles M. Moore Insurance Agency Account Executive Tim Goss said cooperation, not only between the Chamber and WKU but between all entrepreneurs in the region, helps small businesses succeed in South Central Kentucky. Local business owners, schools, and economic development agencies have realized that a rising tide does indeed lift all ships. “The overall attitude is of the people working together for the good of the community,” Goss said. “Each business owner recognizes their own unique abilities, and they are sharing those with others.”

The Honors College at WKU is the first independent honors college in the state of Kentucky. www.bgchamber.com 49
Committed to building a world-class program, WKU Honors students are making a name for themselves, winning fellowships to study in Europe and Asia and winning “honor student of the year” for the entire United States. WKU Honors students have also earned more Barry Goldwater Scholarships (the most prestigious undergraduate science award in Kentucky) than any other university in Kentucky and more awards than more than half of the Ivy League institutions. The Kentucky Legislature selected WKU to be the home of the Gatton Academy for Mathematics and Science in Kentucky, which opened in the fall of 2007. WKU faculty teach 120 of the Commonwealth’s brightest high school juniors and seniors as they finish high school and earn college credit at the same time. In May 2008, the
Gatton Academy graduated its inaugural class of 54 students, who represented 35 Kentucky counties. Forty-four of the graduates (81 percent) plan to attend Kentucky higher education institutions, with 24 continuing their studies at WKU. In addition, WKU celebrates the following nationally recognized initiatives: • Journalism & Broadcasting, which has ranked among the top eight schools in the country for 15 consecutive years through the Hearst program and has received national championship honors in news photography and broadcast news • Engineering, which is accredited and has won regional and national honors in areas such as concrete canoe and steel bridge competitions • Education, which consistently produces more of Kentucky’s teachers, counselors, and school administrators than any other school in the state • Forensics, which has swept major national and international championships five times since 2003 • Research initiatives, such as internationally recognized clean coal technology with ICSET (WKU’s Institute for Combustion Science and Environmental Technology) All of this takes place in a campus environment that has been transformed by a $541 million investment in a rebuilding program that includes residence halls, academic buildings, athletic facilities, and campus beautification. Rather than waiting for people to come to them, area congregations are reaching beyond their front doors to touch the community through many different outreach programs. Lil Angel’s Attic Twice a year, Broadway United Methodist Church presents the Lil’ Angel’s Attic community consignment sale. Besides offering the community a great place to purchase gently used items for their children, Broadway United Methodist also uses proceeds from the sale to benefit the community. During the spring 2008 sale, more than $100,000 in sales were made. Because it was a consignment sale, sellers were able to keep 70 percent of the proceeds, but 30 percent, minus expenses, was distributed to area service agencies. More than $25,000 was donated to 11 local family and children’s charities.

Hillvue Heights Expansion Hillvue Heights Church in Bowling Green is building a new, 62,000-square-foot facility that will house junior and senior high, preschool, and children’s ministries. According to Executive Pastor Mark Hale, the new addition will feature a unique ICF (insulating concrete forms) design that is designed to sustain 200-mile-per-hour winds, making it an ideal storm shelter for the surrounding community. The new building is scheduled to open in August 2009. The existing children’s wing will then house the adult faith development program.
Bowling Green is blessed to have two host sites that participate in the Angel Food Ministries program, with a number of supporting churches as order-taking sites. There are several regional churches that also participate as host sites. For a small fee, anyone is able to place an order for an Angel Food box. By buying food from first-rate suppliers at substantial volume discounts, Angel Food Ministries is able to provide families with approximately $65 worth of quality, nutritious food for just $30. With a worship community that has grown from about 200 families in 1970 to almost 1,000 families today, Holy Spirit Catholic Church is in the midst of a capital campaign to build a new church campus. The Holy Spirit family celebrated a major milestone in this campaign on September 10, 2008, when they broke ground for their new site. Bishop John J. McGraith, Sister Joseph Angela Boone, Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman and Holy Spirit parishioner Doug Gorman, and nearly 300 others attended the groundbreaking ceremony at Holy Spirit’s new 29-acre site at 4754 Smallhouse Road. Following a blessing ceremony by the Bishop, church members clad in red outlined the building site and turned the first shovelfuls of dirt. As parishioner John Deeb, former chair of the Holy Spirit Pastoral Council, stated, “This move and this growth are necessary for the future of our church.” The new campus will consist of two buildings: One will house classrooms, offices, and fellowship space, while the other will become the new church sanctuary. “Our ultimate goal is to build the entire church campus,” says Father W. Jerry Riney, pastor of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. “Our financial goal is $2.5 million, which is very attainable for this parish. God has blessed us abundantly — beyond measure.” Bishop McGraith described the groundbreaking as a grand leap of faith. Once complete, the new campus will also include a piazza, St. Mary’s Garden, and recreational facilities, including a soccer field and a baseball diamond. Holy Spirit parish hopes to celebrate Easter 2010 at their new campus and the Advent season of 2010 in their new church. www.bgchamber.com 69
