The commemoration of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad is celebrated at the Golden Spike National Historic Site, located 32 miles west of Brigham City. many years simply as “The Peach City” because of the many peach orchards planted in the area.

ounded in 1851, Brigham City’s first permanent settlers were the Mormon pioneers sent to the area by their ecclesiastical leader, Brigham Young. The pioneers began plowing and planting fields as well as constructing buildings for homes, businesses, and churches. Many of these original buildings are still standing today. The city was named for Brigham Young, the territorial Governor of Utah and the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or Mormons. Brigham City was known for many years simply as “The Peach City” because of the many peach orchards planted in the area. The fruit trees grow well in the climate of Brigham City, which was built on the bench of the Wasatch Mountain Range. Today the area is still famous for delicious fruit and its wonderful fruit way on Highway 89, between Willard and Perry. The history of the area is preserved through the efforts of all Brigham City residents. A stroll down Main Street provides a chance to see the restored architecture present in buildings still being used today. A conversation

with some of the long-time residents of Brigham City provides new insight into the restored buildings. Brigham City’s history is depicted in the Brigham City Museum-Gallery where one of many exhibits shows the first permanent, white settlers’ arrival in 1851 through the turn of the century. Visitors can take a leap into the past while looking at a typical two-room adobe home with authentic furnishings. The museum also exhibits Alma Compton’s photographs that give visitors glimpses into the early days of Brigham City. The Brigham City Museum-Gallery staff compiled a historic tour booklet about Brigham City. By relying on some of the oral histories of the local residents, the booklet shows readers what Brigham City was like in the olden days. The booklet leads you through 18 interesting sites, all at your own pace. The staff has also completed National Register nominations for 16 historic public and commercial buildings. The staff, as well as the residents of Brigham City, realize the importance of the architecture and the stories contained in them. They

strive to maintain it so their children and grandchildren can also experience a taste of the past. A walk down Main Street is filled with historic buildings like the Brigham Co-op. The first and most successful of the Mormon cooperative systems began with the Brigham City Mercantile and Manufacturing Association. The Co-op, as it is better known, was finished in 1891. As a recent addition to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, the Brigham Co-op building is now the home of Wells Fargo Bank. A light can be seen at night in the distance when driving to Brigham City along Interstate 15. This light is another of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s historic buildings, the Brigham City LDS Tabernacle. Built in 1887, the tabernacle is still regularly used for worship services for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Visitors can tour the grounds and the majestic building on their own or on a free guided tour conducted during the summer months. The building is a constant reminder to the residents of Brigham City of the pioneer heritage surrounding the area.

Autoliv is another major employer in Brigham City. The Swedish company is a worldwide leader in automotive safety. The plant in Brigham City is one of only a few Airbag Inflator Facilities in the country. Autoliv not only provides jobs to residents of the community, but also makes their lives a bit safer. The summer months in Brigham City can get hot, and there is no better way to cool off than to go for a dip or swim in the pool at Pioneer Park. The outdoor pool offers many hours of enjoyment during the summer. Learn to swim or just splash around the pool. In winter you can practice your backstroke at the Box Elder Natatorium, which is open year-round to the public. There are swimming lessons offered as well as open swim times. Brigham City also has nine parks for your next family gathering or picnic. Each

park is clean and gives the residents of Brigham City a place to relax. Come and enjoy lunch while sitting at one of the picnic tables, or spread your blanket under a tree. There are playgrounds for the kids to enjoy and large grassy areas for a game of football or Frisbee. Most parks also offer restrooms and a covered bowery. The Brigham City Recreation Department has many sport leagues for residents of all ages, including youth programs in T-ball, Coach Pitch Baseball, Little League Baseball, Ponytail Softball, basketball, tennis, fishing, and flag football, just to name a few. For adults who enjoy sports, Brigham City has many year-round programs. Men’s, women’s, and co-ed softball is just one way to enjoy the long summer days in the city. Try a game of basketball or volleyball. Pick a sport, round up a team, and enjoy the hometown spirit of Brigham City.

righam City boasts a rich inventory of heritage and culture — historic structures and sites, festivals, pageants, celebrations, and more. Whether your interests are in the arts or outdoor life, Brigham City has something for you. One of the greatest moments in history occurred 32 miles west of Brigham City. The Central Pacific (west) and Union Pacific (east) railroads met at Promontory, Utah, and were finally joined with a golden spike. The country was connected from east to west by a “trail of iron.” The Golden Spike National Historic Site is open daily except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. The visitor center has a wealth of knowledge to share with old and young alike. The Historic Brigham City Train Depot is another stop for train lovers, history buffs, or anyone looking for an interesting way to spend some time. Built in 1907, the depot maintains the architectural charm of the day. The depot boasts an impressive museum and well-stocked gift shop staffed by dedicated volunteers eager to share the history of Brigham City with visitors. The Brigham City LDS Tabernacle, built in 1887, is still regularly used for worship services for the Church of Jesus Christ of

Latter-Day Saints. Visitors can tour the grounds and the majestic building on their own or on a free guided tour conducted during the summer months. The building is a constant reminder to the residents of Brigham City of the pioneer heritage surrounding the area. Another reminder is the historic Brigham Co-op buildings. Finished in 1891, the co-op buildings once housed many cooperative enterprises and are still in use today by a wide variety of businesses. Over Main Street in Brigham City hangs an arching sign boasting “the world’s greatest bird refuge.” Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge offers some of the most phenomenal waterbird watching in the western United States! The 55,000 American white pelicans that nest on Great Salt Lake’s Gunnison Island — one of North America’s three largest pelican colonies — feed daily on fresh fish at the refuge. American avocet, black-necked stilt, and Western and Clark’s grebe chicks will surely peg the “cute meter” in the early summer months. And if you’re hankering to see waterfowl in the fall, how about Tundra swans? A staggering 35,000 swans are often reported at the refuge during routine waterbird surveys each November, and numbers around Great Salt Lake can reach in excess of 50,000 birds!

Begin your visit by stopping at the refuge’s new Wildlife Education Center (visitor center), located just one block west of the junction of Forest Street and Interstate 15 (exit 363) at Brigham City. This new center features interactive exhibits about birds, a theater, a teaching lab, a bookstore, and more. Hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is closed Sundays and federal holidays. Residents of Brigham City seeking the arts don’t need to look very far. The Brigham City Museum-Gallery is home to a wide variety of exhibits. The museum has a family interactive historical area that tells about the early history of Brigham City. Come experience Eliza’s Attic and The Homestead. The Brigham City Museum-Gallery also plays host to traveling national shows. Annual exhibits such as the two-county high school art competition in the spring and Peach Days Art Festival in September are especially pertinent to Brigham City citizens. A writing competition is also sponsored by the museum during Peach Days. The Fine Arts Center offers an amazing Puppet Museum and a large curriculum of varied art classes and summer camps for children.

Just a few short miles south of Brigham City is the Heritage Theatre. Built in 1890, the theatre served for nearly 80 years as an LDS (Mormon) church. Now known as one of the best regional theatres in the area, the 220-seat theatre offers a wide array of quality productions year-round. Brigham City boasts the privilege of being the birthplace of American modern ballet. The Box Elder Dance Academy was home to the Christensen Brothers. Lew, Harold, and Willam studied locally and later shared the same vaudeville bill as W.C. Fields and Bob Hope. As vaudeville came to an end, the brothers studied dance with the masters of the time. Their ventures led to the San Francisco Ballet Company, Ballet West in Salt Lake City, and the University of Utah School of Ballet. It was Willam’s efforts that led to the first full production of The Nutcracker in 1944. Festivals and celebrations are plentiful in Brigham City. Watch the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit on May 10th of each year to commemorate the anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike. In June each year Brigham City celebrates its past with the Brigham City Heritage Arts Festival. Focusing on events that make the community unique, the city comes together to celebrate with first-class entertainment, food,

booths, and exhibits. Enjoy everything from quilts and cars to heritage arts and crafts. Peach Days is an annual event that pulls the community of Brigham City together in fun and festivities the week after Labor Day each September. Peach Days originated in the early days of Brigham City in recognition of the extensive orchards growing the famous peaches. The first Peach Days festival was in September of 1904 and the event has been celebrated annually ever since. This long-running tradition makes Peach Days the oldest festival in Utah and one of the oldest in the nation. Take the family to town and enjoy rides, local enter entertainment, a parade, and many booths. Summer concerts, movies, and 4th of July celebrations offer the citizens of Brigham City many fine hours of enjoyment. Just bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy what Brigham City has to offer. Winter is just as exciting for the residents of Brigham City. The Nutcracker Festival in December celebrates the city’s ties to ballet and offers folks the chance to join in on the spirit of the season. Fantasy at the Bay is a drive-through animated light park just a few minutes outside of the city, and Reindeer Station offers a chance for families to get up close and personal with live reindeer and the Jolly Old Elf himself!

In addition to the businesses on Main Street, there are a few large department store chains in Brigham City. There are several large grocery stores as well. Brigham is famous for good food. Maddox, a local restaurant, has been in business for over 60 years and is known throughout Utah for its delicious food. Whether dining or ordering out, you will find a friendly atmosphere at the restaurant. Along with Maddox, there are several other places that are sure to be a hit any night of the week, namely the local Idle Isle and Peach City. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the home-style cooking of these local restaurants. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget to try the famous peach shakes while youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re out! The national food chains calling Brigham City home quickly realize the value of the location. The interstate runs along the west edge of Brigham City, so motorists find it a convenient place to stop. Most major fast-food chains have a restaurant in Brigham City.
