Coal Township The community of Coal Township lies on top of the region’s rich anthracite coal fields. Because Shamokin broke away from Coal Township in the mid-1900s, Coal Township surrounds the community of Shamokin. Its current population is 10,628.
Elysburg and Ralpho Township Elysburg, the central hub of Ralpho Township, has a population of more than 2,000. The city was originally called Petersburg in honor of Peter Haus, a Revolutionary War soldier who designed the community. Ralpho Township, which has a population of more than 3,700, has enjoyed a trend of growth over the past several years.
Kulpmont Monroe H. Kulp, a wealthy landowner and timber professional, founded Kulpmont in the early 1900s in the hope of developing a residential community adjacent to the Scott Colliery before the mine opened for production. Today Kulpmont is home to nearly 3,000 individuals. It pays tribute to its proud heritage through a coal monument that attributes Kulpmont with the first recorded discovery of anthracite in the middle coalfields.
Welcome to Brush Valley! W
elcome to the beautiful, historic and progressive Brush Valley region of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. Carmel, Trevorton, and Shamokin. Brush Valley offers visitors a wide variety of accommodations, including hotels and motels, bed and breakfasts, campgrounds, and primitive campsites. Tourists can find activities ranging from boating, hunting and fishing at the Weiser Forest District to riding the coasters at Knoebel’s Amusement Park. Mt. Carmel Quiet Mt. Carmel has changed very little in recent decades, but 100 years ago it was a bustling hub of coal mining that brought together a vast culture of European immigrant workers from Russia, Ireland, Scotland, England, Germany, Lithuania, Italy, Poland and many other countries. First settled in 1770, Mt. Carmel was a logging town long before the coal mining industry exploded in the Appalachian area. Because of its elevation and beautiful mountain setting, Albert Bradford, who owned and operated a steam sawmill in the community, aptly named Mt. Carmel after the holy mountain in Palestine. The borough of Mt. Carmel has been one of the most progressive in the country; it was one of the world’s first towns to have its streets illuminated by electricity. Thomas Edison erected one of his first generating plants and conducted some of his most important experiments here. Mt. Carmel’s current population is around 6,400.
Shamokin The name Shamokin means “place of the horn,” and the community is so named in honor of both the Delaware Indians who once lived in the land and the large deer population in the region. Located on the western edge of the coal region, Shamokin was first incorporated as a borough in 1864 and as a city in 1949. Historically, its main industry was found in anthracite coal mining, though its heritage also included wagon shops, ironworks, brickyards, stocking and shirt factories, and silk and knitting mills. The 2000 U.S. Census lists the total population of the community at more than 8,000 individuals.
Trevorton The community of Trevorton was first planned around 1827, as the coal mining industry attempted to locate a water or rail passage from the Susquehanna River to the mines at Zerbe Run. Its wide streets stand as a lasting symbol of the prosperity brought to Treverton by the booming coalfields. During the mid-1800s, Trevorton annually sent more than 100,000 tons of coal on a 60-horse steam engine to market while working four veins above water level. Today, Trevorton has a population of just over 2,000.

BRUSH VALLEY: SMALL-TOWN BEAUTY CLOSE TO BIG-CITY AMENITIES
L
ocated in beautiful Northumberland County, Brush Valley is a string of small historic coal-mining communities in east-central Pennsylvania. In the heart of the Keystone State’s natural beauty and the foothills of the eastern slopes of the Appalachian Mountains, the region includes the communities of Coal Township, Elysburg and Ralpho Township, Kulpmont, Mt. Carmel, Paxinos, Trevorton, and Shamokin. “Located in central Pennsylvania, we are convenient to New York City, Philadelphia and New Jersey and are located between two major routes — Interstates 80 and 81,” says David Fidler, President of the Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce. “We are not too far from the major cities, but we are far enough away to maintain a hometown feeling.” Central Pennsylvania offers a picture of classic Americana, from small Victorian towns and
close-knit communities to covered bridges that span tree-lined streams. Its vast state parks and forests offer a beauty and serenity that is unparalleled. Woodlands with ageless hardwoods and impressive conifers cover about half of Brush Valley, but much of the non-mountainous areas are rich and fertile farmland. Anthracite coal mining, quarrying, and other heavy and light manufacturing and distribution operations are major enterprises for the region. The rugged and secluded Weiser State Forest offers a majestic view of the Pennsylvania countryside, and the Susquehanna River drifts by the western edge of Northumberland County. A plethora of recreational possibilities are available, include fishing in the freshwater trout streams of Little Shamokin Creek, Mahantongo Creek and Roaring Creek. Several cities can be easily accessed from the Brush Valley region. From Mt. Carmel, located on the eastern edge of Brush Valley, Philadelphia
is only 88 air miles southeast, while Wilkes-Barre is 43 air miles northeast, Harrisburg is 45 air miles southeast, and Williamsport is 46 air miles northwest. Philadelphia is just over a two-hour drive away, and New York City can be reached by highway in three hours. Travel to and from Brush Valley is made easier by a convenient highway system. In addition to Interstates 80 and 81, Northumberland County is crossed by U.S. Routes 11 and 15, and the region lies along Pennsylvania Highway 61. Air travel is possible through local, regional and international airports. Williamsport-Lycoming County Airport and Harrisburg International are the nearest major airports. The Northumberland County Airport is located in Elysburg. For local transportation, the Lower Anthracite Transportation System (LATS) offers bus service through Brush Valley.

Business
BRUSH VALLEY’S CENTRAL LOCATION IS KEY TO NEW BUSINESS
E
arly settlers to the Brush Valley region came here largely in search of jobs in the coalfields. As coal production in Brush Valley has slowly declined over the past 20 years, the communities of the region have adjusted their economic infrastructure to allow them to successfully recruit leading businesses to the area. David Fidler, President of the Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, says the peaceful quality of life in Brush Valley has been a key to recruiting new businesses. “We live in a very family-oriented area with a safe environment and a number of activities for children, such as summer festivals every weekend, Knoebels Amusement resort to visit, and a new state forest to explore,” he notes. “Our education system keeps up with the larger, more urban areas for curriculum and maintains a safe learning environment. Brush Valley also offers an affordable cost of living with low property and personal income taxes.” Brush Valley’s location in central Pennsylvania makes it convenient to New York City, Philadelphia and New Jersey, and it is neatly situated between the two major routes of Interstates 80 and 81. In addition, the region provides abundant natural resources that support dairy, poultry and agricultural ventures. The region is also proud of its workforce. “In the Brush Valley region, we are pleased to have dedicated employees of all ages ready and willing to work hard for the employer who is dedicated to them,” says Fidler. In order to recruit new industries, the people of Brush Valley, in conjunction with the Northumberland County Industrial Development Corporation (NCIDC), have adjusted their economic infrastructure to accommodate manufacturing, which now serves as the leading source of employment in the region.

A Brief History of the Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce Formed in May of 1998, the Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce combined existing chambers from Shamokin and Mt. Carmel to encompass a larger region. The chamber’s new name was taken from the bountiful Brush Valley, the source of the region’s water system. The Brush Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce recently moved to a new one-floor facility, located at 415 E. Sunbury Street in Shamokin. “The facility and equipment have all been updated, a larger board room is available for members to use, and additional office space is available for sublet,” Fidler says. The Chamber’s standing committees — Education, Community Wellness, Economic Development and Governmental Affairs, Events and Public Relations, Membership and
Nominating, Executive, and By-Laws — have all been revamped with a renewed emphasis on growing the economy. “The Chamber provides monthly luncheons and Business After Hours Mixers,” Fidler explains. “We also offer discounts on health insurance and telecommunication services, member-to-member discounts, members-only referrals, government contracting classes, and a number of community partnerships.”

ou don’t have to travel to a big city to experience art and culture. The Brush Valley region offers many community arts and cultural events for both education and enjoyment. With offices located on Eighth and Arch streets in Shamokin, the Northumberland County Council for the Arts and Humanities has a mission to enhance the quality of life, economic development and tourism in Northumberland and surrounding counties through promoting the arts for all age groups, and by offering cultural and educational programs and exhibits in the Northumberland County vicinity. The Northumberland County Career and Arts Center Fine Art Gallery, located on the lower level of the arts building, offers a wonderful exhibition space for artists to display their works in a gallery setting. Jeanne Shaffer, director of the council, explains, “The gallery artists change every six weeks with a reception held to kick off each new exhibit.” Each year, the gallery hosts a Holiday Show and a silent auction of donated artwork. “The money raised is used to support our gallery,” Shaffer says. “Past auctions have raised money for track lighting, carpeting and maintenance.” The Northumberland County Council for the Arts and Humanities is also host to the annual Anthracite Heritage Festival of the Arts, which provides an opportunity to celebrate the customs and traditions of the anthracite coal region through
dancing, music, food, living history presentations, crafters and artisans, wagon rides, a historic house tour, coal mining music, and displays. The festival boasts the “Amazing Coal Cracker Race” and features cemetery tours, tours of the former Shamokin High School, street entertainment, a number of historical displays, prizes, and various children’s activities. The festival takes place on the Saturday of Memorial weekend each year. The Anne Miles Children’s Theatre also offers a summer production each year in the theatre of the Arts Center. The 2006 production was “Bugsy Malone,” and a different play is presented each
year. The Arts Center is also home to the annual Lourdes High School musical, various concerts and community performances. The Northumberland County Council for the Arts and Humanities is supported in part through individual and family memberships and through the Century Club, an elite group of communityand arts-minded people who are interested in promoting the arts as an educational tool to enrich culture in Northumberland County. Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine At the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine in Ashland, visitors have the opportunity to take a 35-minute ride into a mine tunnel on battery-operated mine cars that have been rebuilt to carry passengers. Once inside the mine, visitors follow a minerguide who explains how coal is mined, points out numerous coal seams, and describes the various passageways that were cut in order to reach the coal. Visitors can also take a ride on a narrow
gauge steam train, the Lokie Henry Clay. The Henry Clay was used years ago to haul coal cars and now pulls passenger mine cars some 3,000 feet along the side of the Mahanoy Mountain.

The Stanley Coveleskie Monument The Stanley Coveleskie Monument, located along Market Street in downtown Shamokin, is a tribute to one of the greatest sons of Shamokin and Coal Township. In 1920, Coveleskie became the first pitcher in modern baseball to win three games in one World Series. Local legend reports that Coveleskie trained himself to pitch by throwing rocks after working long days in the coal mines. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969.
