Welcome

Small-Town Comfort, Big-City Benefits

W

elcome to Carbondale, Illinois! A city of 26,000 residents, Carbondale has a thriving business community, South ern Illinois University Carbondale, scenic lakes, and a national forest. It’s also known as the birthplace of Memorial Day, the front door of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, the home of fabulous restaurants serving international cuisine, the city with two stops along the Southern Illinois Golf Trail, and the location with many stages filled with music, dance, and live theater. Carbondale is a bustling community of unusual shops, diverse commerce, cultural activities, and many other luxuries that would be expected in a large city, yet it maintains the comforts and charm of a small town.

Although the title is unof ficial, many residents con sider it to be the capital of Southern Illinois.

History

A city of 26,000 residents, Carbondale has a thriving business community,

In August 1852, Daniel Harmon Brush, John Asgill Conner, and Dr. William Richart bought 360 acres of land along the right of way for the Illinois Central Railroad with the intention of founding a new town. Not only was the railroad the determining factor in the location of Carbondale, but it also played a vital role in the development of

Southern Illinois University Carbondale, scenic lakes, and a national forest. Southern Illinois. The first train through the town on the main line north from Cairo (Ill.) was on Independence Day, 1854, and was

Welcome cause for a community celebration. The railroad made possible the shipping of Southern Illinois coal and fruit. By this time Carbondale had also become an education center with the founding of Carbondale College, which later became Southern Illinois College in 1869. Carbondale won the bid for the new teacher training school for the region, and Southern Illinois Normal University opened here in 1874. This gave the town a new industry, new citizens, and a model school to supplement the public schools. By 1947, the college had obtained full university status and the name was changed to Southern Illinois University. Since then the school has become the primary force in the city’s economy and, in fact, is the center of higher education and culture in all of Southern Illinois. It also employs almost 40 percent of the total labor force of this charming community, and gives Carbondale an average resident age (25 years) that is below the national median age, which is 36.4, accord ing to the 2006 U.S. Census.

Today The community prides itself on being a great place to raise a family, to pursue an education, or to start a business. There is an abundance of beautiful homes, outstanding schools, and superb health care facilities associated with the research and teaching of a larger university. Less than 100 miles from St. Louis, and within a few hours of Chicago, Indianapolis, Memphis, and Nashville, Carbondale offers a rich terrain for trails, vineyards, forests, and lakes as well as easy transportation by highway, train, bus, or air. The 273,000 acres of the Shawnee National Forest and tens of thousands of acres of beautiful public lakes, as well

Welcome as the nearness of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, make Carbondale truly the heart of the Midwest. Local trans portation includes U.S. Highway 51 and state Route 13, 16 daily freight train ser vices between Chicago and New Orleans, Amtrak, Greyhound Bus Lines, Beck Bus Company, and West Bus Service, in addition to a local airport and availability of two commercial airlines just 15 minutes away that offer daily flights to and from St. Louis and Chicago. The Southern Illinois Airport is also home to the nationally known SIU Aviation Technology program. Average temperatures are tepid in winter and comfortable in the summer, ranging from 30 degrees to 85 degrees, respectively. Precipitation averages 40 inches annually, with an average of just 10 inches of snowfall. Carbondale is home to various ethnic groups and cultures, and approximately 10 percent of the population is foreignborn. Most of the community, 91 percent, is educated with at least a high school diploma, while a high percentage, 24 per cent, has a graduate or professional degree, reflecting a university community. The vari ous Protestant, Catholic and non-denomina

GENERATE leads

tional churches, along with a synagogue and a Muslim temple, also bring rich religious traditions to Carbondale.

Little Egypt An interesting fact about the Carbondale area is that it is referred to as “Little Egypt,” which explains SIUC’s aptly titled daily paper, the Daily Egyptian. There have been various explanations for the reference, ranging from the region’s supplying grain to northern and central Illinois during a famine in the early 1800s, to a comparison of the land mass surrounded by the great Mississippi and Ohio rivers with that of Egypt’s Nile delta region. There are several names used in the area — towns of Cairo, Thebes, Palestine, and Lebanon; the man-made Lake of Egypt; a public health agency serving southeast ern Illinois, Egyptian Health Department; and even SIUC’s mascot, the Saluki (the name of a dog breed originating in the Middle East) — recognizing the affinity for “Little Egypt.” Whatever the reason for visiting Carbondale, visitors are always invited to stay a little longer, enjoy favorite attractions, or even make this warm and friendly com munity their home.

Carbondale Offers Much to Do!

arbondale is the place to be! Catering to the recreation and relax ation needs of 19,789 Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) students, Carbondale’s nightlife is lively, popular, and offers a large variety of venues. With destination eateries, concerts, pubs, movie theaters, pizza places, fast-food restaurants, coffee shops, wineries, sport bars, malls, downtown shopping, and SIUC and JALC sports, Carbondale has an entertainment answer for everyone. SIUC has outstanding recreation facilities and numerous activities throughout the year to help students and faculty unwind. Of course, there are multiple musical, theatrical, religious, and other cultural events offered by the city, SIUC, JALC, and other groups, too.

Buffalo Wild Wings, Don Taco, Steak ‘n Shake, Mugsy McGuire’s, Lonestar Steakhouse, Booby’s, and Tres Hombres are some of the popu larly mentioned hangouts among an informal survey of underclass men. Many students also go to Carbondale’s large University Mall to meet friends, see a movie, and check out the most current and popular purchase options.

(SIUC) students, Carbondale’s nightlife is lively, popular, and offers a large variety of venues.

In addition to the superstars brought to town by SIUC, local businesses are able to attract bigtime celebrities ranging from Vanilla Ice to Dierks Bentley, who have appeared at Copper Dragon, an entertain ment center near the SIUC campus that features popular concerts and events. All Copper Dragon’s shows require the audience members to be at least age 19, and seating is general admission. In addition to Copper Dragon’s special events and concerts, Pinch Penny Pub offers popular contests, hip happenings, and theme nights. Pinch Penny and Copper Dragon are both part of a familyowned business managed by James Karayiannis. An SIUC alumnus, Karayiannis takes pride in welcoming students, gradu ates and their families to this exciting element of Carbondale nightlife. He loves the small community where it’s easy to know people. He also enjoys feeling as if he makes a difference in the lives of his employees and his customers. “It’s an honor to enter tain customers, especially on the biggest days of their lives like birthdays and graduations. I believe it (Carbondale) has a very bright future ahead,” Karayiannis says.

SIUC’s Web site offers a recommended list of things to do and places to go in Carbondale, submitted by the school’s recent graduates to new students coming into town each year. This list can be found at www.SIUC.edu/~sgsc/New%20Students.htm. The city permits persons age 19 and older to enter bars, where much of the off-campus enter tainment is offered. State law, however, prohibits the consumption of alcohol by those under 21. Local nightlife is carefully monitored by the Carbondale Police Department.

Other Opportunities Carbondale offers opportunities that appeal to those other than traditional college students, too. Carbondale has many fine luxury lounges, cafés, wine bars, and coffee houses that serve a wide selection of food, drinks, entertainment, and excitement late into the evening.

Fusion Fusion, one of the newest downtown businesses, is owned by Dan Terry. Terry is also the owner of Newell House, a favorite restaurant in the downtown historic section. Fusion, an ultra lounge, is open late into the evening and features “tapas,” and exceptional menu of spe cialty drinks. Terry has been in Carbondale for 10 years and enjoys the diverse opportunities of the community.

SIUC Carbondale appeals to many SIUC students because of its acces sibility, friendly residents, and many activities from which to choose.

Housing

Amenities Beyond Expectations

arbondale homes range from historic treasures dating back to the city’s begin nings, to homes currently under con struction, to small student apartments, to entire homes for rent, to assisted living for the elderly, to subsidized homes for the economically disadvantaged. The wide variety of homes available, the small-town safety and friendliness, and the availability of larger-city amenities make Carbondale a great place to live.

lower prices than one would typically find. The first of these neighborhoods was com pleted in 2005. Carbondale recently boasted selling 27 homes in just 18 months! The new est incentive-driven development, Deer Trail, will offer brand-new homes of over 2,000 square feet for around $225,000. The city also offers incentives for housing rehabilita tion and home buyer assistance. In October 2007, the city council initiated a $5,000 incentive for individual homeowners who would purchase an existing single-family resi dential rental property and convert it back to a single-family, owneroccupied dwelling. The most historic housing is located in the heart of town in the West Walnut Street Historic District. Homes here date from the 1850s to early 1900s. Housing close to the SIUC campus is always in demand, making the southwestern sector of the city a center for new development. Rural subdivisions fea turing spacious lots set among the scenic roll ing hills of Southern Illinois are also popular. Homes in the local real estate market range from large-scale custom-built homes at the upper end of the price scale to a multitude of quality affordable housing. In early 2008, the median home price in Carbondale was $144,000 — nearly 25 percent lower than the mean price for the state of Illinois in the same quarter. The city government, seeking more afford able homes for the community, has offered incentives to developers to build homes at

Living Here

The natural beauty of the area, including rivers, lakes, a variety of golf courses, and Shawnee National Forest, entices many resi dents to enjoy numerous outdoor activities. Walking and biking throughout the town is an especially popular exercise. Additionally, the modern medical facilities, successful educa tional system, and variety of available cultural activities attract singles, retirees, and families to the community. Many SIUC graduates remain in the area because it has so much to offer. Residents often take advantage of the close proximity to St. Louis, Missouri, for even more options. Carbondale homeowners take great pride in their property, thus homes are well maintained and many yards are beau tifully landscaped. To recognize the hard work of residents and business owners, the Bright Spot award is given monthly by Keep Carbondale Beautiful (www.keepcb.org). Keep Carbondale Beautiful is an affiliate of Keep Illinois Beautiful and Keep America

Beautiful. The city of Carbondale, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Jackson County Health Department, as well as individuals and members of the busi ness community, support Keep Carbondale Beautiful. This organization also works with recycling, decreasing pollution, litter control, and environmental education. Carbondale citizens are well informed of world and local news, culture, and music through seven local radio stations, a daily and weekly newspaper, and three local TV sta tions. Other benefits of living in Carbondale include sidewalks on most streets, plenty of street lighting, cable, wireless high-speed and DSL Internet availability, underground wiring in the newer areas, beautiful national and state parks, and many bicycle paths. Four public golf courses, 17 public tennis courts, a public swimming pool, and 14 public parks are further amenities the city boasts. More information on residential services may be found on the city-sponsored Web site, www.ci.carbondale.il.us/Residents/index.html. Carbondale is top in the region for edu cation at all levels, preschool through Ph.D. Offerings include Southern Illinois University Carbondale (Carbondale’s major employer) and John A. Logan College (which is in nearby Carterville), four private/parochial schools, two high schools, and six elementary/junior high schools. A well-equipped public library offers a grand selection of books, videos, online resources, Hispanic services, tapes, and pro grams for children and teens. The Carbondale Public Library (CPL) is located at 405 West Main Street in Carbondale and provides free services to all residents living within the city boundaries. CPL honors all valid Illinois public library cards, although some restric tions may apply. Services are also available to those without a card for a fee. CPL is part of the Shawnee Library System, which holds more than 425,615 total materials. For more information on the Carbondale Public Library, visit www.carbondale.lib.il.us.

arbondale’s progressive local government has a professional administration operat ing under the council-manager form of government. The city council is com posed of the mayor and six at-large, nonpartisan elected council members. Each serves a staggered four-year term. The council acts as the policy-making body for city government and hires a city manager to serve as the chief administrative officer. Regular city council meetings are held every other Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Carbondale City Hall/Civic Center, 200 South Illinois Avenue. All meetings are open to the pub lic, televised live, and rebroadcast later on local cable networks. Every agenda includes Citizen Questions and Comments, which permits discussion of any topic by any citizen. Tourism

See What Carbondale Has to Offer! Golf trails, wine trails, art trails, scenic parks, national forests, fishing, water sports, annual festivals, antiques, culture, outdoor recreation, abundant restaurants, shopping, and banquet facilities are among the many opportunities available to both residents and visitors of the Carbondale area. Families, singles, youth, and retirees will all find some thing to do and enjoy. In charge of welcoming guests to the area, the Carbondale Convention & Tourism Bureau (CCTB) was created in 1985 to develop, pro mote, market, and facilitate activities designed to increase the numbers of out-of-town visi tors to the greater Carbondale community. The bureau’s staff works diligently to lure leisure travelers, as well as meeting and conference visitors, to the community. The Carbondale Sports Commission, a subunit of the CCTB, is successful in attracting sports events and related activities to the region. The activities and places featured within this book are just some highlights of things to do and places to go in this rich region of Southern Illinois. For more possibilities and links to points of interest, go to the CCTB Web site, www.cctb.org, or call 800-526-1500.

Natural Beauty

Illinois’ largest expanse of wooded land, the Shawnee National Forest, is located in the heart of Southern Illinois. Its 273,000 acres are a major attraction for outdoor lov ers, offering wilderness trails, archaeological sites, waterfalls, drives along the National Scenic Byways, swimming, and bicycling. This huge national resource stretches from the Mississippi River on the west to the Ohio River on the east. The Pomona Natural Bridge, a beautiful stone bridge near Pomona in the Jackson County portion of the Shawnee National Forest, is one of only a handful of natural bridges in the United States. Worth visiting any time of the year, the 4,000-acre Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge near Carbondale is especially beauti ful in the fall when the geese make a tempo rary stop on their way south for the winter. Every Sunday in October, wildlife enthusiasts may drive through sections of the refuge, watching for wild turkeys, coyotes, foxes, and even bobcats. Carbondale Parks and Recreation Department offers seven different parks for enjoyment and relaxation. In addition to

walking and biking trails, an arboretum, recreational and sports facilities, and picnic areas, the system also offers events, concerts, instructional lessons, free programs, day trips, and leisure services to families and individuals of all ages. Several state parks are within an easy drive of Carbondale.

The Great Outdoors Southern Illinois is a popular hunting and fishing destination. Many of the fishing oppor tunities are close to Carbondale, including sites like Big Muddy River, Cedar Lake in the Shawnee National Forest, Crab Orchard Lake, Devil’s Kitchen Lake, Kinkaid Lake, and of course both the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. Abundant deer, duck, geese, and other promising game are found in season through out the region. Those who enjoy camping will also find many good choices, including Crab Orchard Campground, Devil’s Backbone Park on the Mississippi River, Giant City State Park, and Kinkaid Lake’s various campgrounds. The River-to-River trail, a popular biking and hiking trail stretching from the great Ohio River to the mighty Mississippi River, is found in the Shawnee National Forest.

Water Fun With many area lakes and rivers, boating, swimming, and other water sport opportu nities are plentiful in the Carbondale area. The city operates a public boat dock and beach at Cedar Lake. The lake’s Camp Beach is a common spot to enjoy with a sandy waterfront, play area, picnic tables, and con cession stand.

The gold course features 50 river-sand bunkers and zoysia fairways. Hickory offers a well-stocked pro shop and a championship practice facil ity including driving range, a practice sand bunker, and a full putting and chipping green. The annual IHSA Class AA State Tournament is held at Hickory Ridge. Inside the roll ing hills of Southern Illinois is Stone Creek Golf Club. This 6,970-yard course highlights manicured Bermuda fairways and bent grass greens that provide panoramic views of the Shawnee National Forest. The championship course hosts a French-American restaurant, practice green and bunker, and pro shop, as well as rustic one- and two-bedroom cabins for lodging. Stone Creek is the home for the IHSA Class A Girls Championship. Several other private and public golf courses are inside the Carbondale area, including Midland Hills Golf Course, Southern Illinois’ oldest course, which opened in 1923.

Annual Gatherings From January to December, Carbondale stays busy with all there is to see and do in the area. The following is a sample of a few of the yearly events that bring everyone together: • St. Patrick’s Day may be March 17th, but on the last weekend in April, Carbondale brings the “luck of the Irish” to life with the Southern Illinois Irish Festival. This unique festival features traditional musicians and dancers, cultural presen tations, a Celtic marketplace with arts

Tourism and merchandise, and countless chil dren’s activities. • Arts in Celebration is a special event at Evergreen Park each September and features a blend of visual and performing arts. Festivities include gallery exhibits, mini-concerts, and stage shows. • Another September event is the very popular Carbondale Main Street Pig Out, a Kansas City Barbecue-sanctioned cook-off. The two-day festival includes live music, children’s activities, a large selection of food, and a beer and wine tent. • In late summer, the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce sponsors its annual Art, Craft and Yard Sale at the SIUC Arena with free admission to the public. • As the holidays draw near, Carbondale celebrates with the Lights Fantastic Parade, the largest nighttime lighted parade in the state of Illinois. The parade, featuring dozens of lighted floats and bands, winds through the downtown area.

Historic Places Much of Carbondale’s downtown origi nated in the 1850s and is a vital part of the Historic District. Many buildings are listed on both local and national registers and are important reminders of our past. than 60 Civil War soldiers. The first organized Memorial Day service in Illinois, and perhaps in the entire nation, was hosted here on April 29, 1866. The Old Illinois Central Railroad Passenger Depot, another historic site in the center of Carbondale, was built in 1903. This building, which houses both the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce and Carbondale Main Street, is recognized by the National Registry of Historic Places. Take a day for a museum tour. There are five local museums with many exhibits focusing on the early times and people in Southern Illinois, while other exhibits take visitors to far-away places and examine cul tures from around the world.

The historic Old Illinois Central Railroad Passenger Depot houses the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce and Carbondale Main Street.

Altgeld Hall is the oldest building on the SIUC campus. Designed in the Gothic Revival style with yellow brick and gray rockfaced limestone, the building features pointed arches and trefoil patterns. Built in 1898, the octagonal four-story tower and crenellated turrets and parapet were popular features for educational buildings of the time.

Blue Sky also offers two suites on site so that visitors can enjoy the area longer. Star View’s personnel take pride that its wines have earned over 45 medals in national and international competitions since the vineyard’s opening in 2006. Haven’t You Heard? Carbondale Is Growing!

E

conomic development and community growth are top priorities for Carbondale city government. The city invests in business development through the Enterprise Zone, Tax Increment Financing District and capital improvement projects, as well as residential devel opment through the Home Ownership Program. Carbondale prides itself on its pro-business atti tude, and entrepreneurs may find assistance in the city’s economic development office and the SI Entrepreneurship Center. Benefits are evident when reviewing Carbondale’s recent economic progress.

Importance of Retail Carbondale’s important retail sector contin ues to grow and remains a dominant commer cial center of the region. According to the city manager’s office, retail sales are expected to approach the $640 million mark in 2008. Sales tax revenues in Carbondale have shown steady growth. Revenue from sales taxes increased from $9.21 million in FY 2004 to $10.47 mil lion in FY 2007, a 13.75 percent increase. The strength of retail sales has enabled Carbondale to eliminate the city government property tax levy, thus further encouraging business and residential growth.

New Construction In fiscal year 2006, over $51 million was spent on new construction in Carbondale. There is no doubt that 2007’s fiscal year was just as progressive. In his Nov. 2007 State of the City address, Mayor Brad Cole stated: “In the four completed years since I have been mayor, we have had $225 million in new construction in Carbondale .... that’s almost a quarter of a billion dollars in building permits issued in four years.”

Industrial Parks Modern facilities in the various industrial/ business parks scattered across the city are proof of Carbondale’s dynamic environment. Bicentennial Industrial Park is a fully infrastructured home for manufacturers,

d istributors, and service firms. The park con tains 180 acres in a highly desirable location for serving the city and the entire Midwest. The largest anchor and a major city employer, Intertape Polymer, operates a 192,000-squarefoot plant that manufactures pressure-sensi tive tape. Com-Pac International is a leading innovator in the design, engineering, and production of specialty plastic soft goods. Six other businesses share the park, which has 100 acres remaining for development. Carbondale Business Park East is located just off Illinois Route 13. It features a 30,000square-foot, multi-tenant, technologically developed office facility that provides tenants tax and financing incentives. This park has the four points of telecommunications pres ence, anchored with a diverse path OC-12 SONET ring. Neon Internet, SchoolCenter, and Verizon have a strong presence here. The 42-acre Southern Illinois Research Park is a high-tech project of SIUC and other business partners. This park fosters knowl edge-based enterprises that benefit through alliances between SIUC’s research community and its many tech nology-focused degree programs. It has ready-tobuild real estate sites available with advanced infrastructure. In 2005, a $2.8 million building, One Enterprise Place (the Dunn-Richmond Center), became the anchor of the park. Its tenants will include graduates of the Small Business Incubator program and new and expanding knowledgebased companies. A second building is in the planning/design stages because of the suc cesses of this park. Carbondale Manufacturers Center is located just north of downtown Carbondale on 11.7 acres. This unique, privately owned warehousing and manufacturing facility has

15 structures, containing over 325,000 square feet and continues to attract a diverse group of businesses.

Working Together Working hand in hand, the city of Carbondale Economic Development Office, Carbondale Business Development Corporation, Carbondale Convention and Tourism Bureau, SIUC Office of Economic and Regional Development, Southern Illinois Research Park, SouthernTech, Jackson Growth Alliance, Carbondale Main Street, and the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce strive to make Carbondale a better place to live and work. All of these organizations have userfriendly Web sites to provide information for those who desire more data. A major transportation development for the community occurred with the addition of the Saluki Amtrak train, which offers daily service between Carbondale and Chicago. Freight transportation is also available through local, regional and national highways, as well as commercial railroad and air.

Carbondale’s forecast continues to be for growth, and citizens are excited about what is happening throughout the community. City officials express common threads in discussing the highlights of living and work ing in Carbondale: Diverse population, stable and growing economy, nightlife, small-town life with university atmosphere, and amenities beyond expectation. Carbondale’s forecast continues to be for growth, and citizens are excited about what is happening throughout the community. Haven’t you heard? Carbondale is growing!

Culture & Arts

Talent, Creativity, Inspiration

T

ogether, Carbondale Community Arts, Southern Illinois University, and many other groups offer a uniquely large selec tion of theater, music, art, and other cultural choices. Carbondale Community Arts (CCA) was formed in 1987 with the specific goal of “showcasing the wealth of talent and creative activity that takes place in Southern Illinois.” CCA is responsible for the annual Arts & Ethnic Celebration festival, which adopts a different international community as a theme each year. CCA also promotes the arts through a vari ety of ongoing visual and performing arts out reach projects. Significant works of art travel to the public schools each year. Stars on Main is another project on which CCA works with Carbondale Main Street, honoring distin guished Southern Illinoisans. On stage, CCA’s acclaimed All Southern High School Music

Theatre Project has a successful partnership with SIUC’s theater department to revive the creative traditions of the local McLeod Summer Playhouse. A host of volunteer involvement possibilities, a dynamic calendar, and other information is available on the CCA Web site, www.carbondalearts.org. Additionally, Carbondale Main Street is host to events such as the Carbondale Main Street Pig Out, an event that attracts food and music lovers alike from all over the Southern Illinois region. Another notable affair is the Brown Bag Concert Series, a 10-week out door happening that takes place in May, June, and September at the Towne Square Pavilion. This series includes all types of music — jazz, blues, New Age, and rock — and is a favorite (bring-your-own) sack lunch event sponsored by area businesses. Downtown also offers a weekly summer Farmers Market, several annual festivals, window decorating contests,

musical and art events, and more activities too numerous to mention. More information about downtown Carbondale can be found at www.carbondalemainstreet.com, includ ing a calendar of events and list of member businesses. Art Lovers’ Trading Company is a unique business in the heart of the downtown historic district. The relatively new retail establish ment is located in the former lobby of the renovated old railroad hotel. Known fondly as Art Lovers’, it is Carbondale’s only privately owned art gallery. Art Lovers’ offers a large, diverse selection of pieces, mostly created by individuals of the area, and it participates in Southern Illinois’ Art Trail. Gallery owner Sue Mills believes that Carbondale attracts a number of artists because of its lower cost of living and untouched natural resources. “It is a beautiful area in which to work and be inspired,” Mills explains. On the first Friday of

Carbondale Community Arts, Southern Illinois University, and a many of other groups bring a variety of theater, music, art, and more to the Carbondale area.

each month, the business features a new artist through its popular First Friday exhibits. Mills invites the public to view the gallery’s Web site, www.artloverstradingcompany.com. Another group of talented citizens pro vides the area with three to five drama pro ductions each year. The Jackson County Stage Company (JCSC) began in 1982, and in 1983 moved into a building donated by the Bank of Carbondale. Since then, the JCSC has existed in a variety of locations. It received a permanent home on South Illinois Avenue in November 2007, when the Varsity Theatre was donated to the city of Carbondale. After its renovation is complete, the Varsity Theatre will house both the Jackson County Stage Company and Carbondale Community Arts. Current JCSC president, Catherine Field, rec ognizes that one of the joys of the more experienced dramatist is teaching younger ones the art, and this is done each year through the group’s summer children’s the ater. The JCSC regularly seeks out new vol unteers to help backstage and on stage. Its

2008 season includes three plays; specific information can be found on the Web site, www.stagecompany.org.

SIUC Contributions SIUC offers many other cultural options to the public, including the Big Muddy Film Festival, a lecture series, the University Museum, The African American Museum, and McLeod Theater. A popular service for art enthusiasts is the sale of SIUC graduates’ and undergrads’ art pieces through busi nesses and organizations such as Southern Glassworks, Southern Illinois Metalsmith Society, the League of Art and Design, and the Graduate Association of Painters and Printmakers. SIUC’s Shryock Auditorium, a classic landmark on campus, is the finest perform ing arts center in the entire region. Shryock is well-known for its Celebrity Series, a profes sional artist series featuring music, drama, dance, Broadway musicals, and multi-cultural events. Both the SIUC’s School of Music

and Student Programming Council use this magnificent facility to present classical and popular artists each year. Familiar artists who have appeared at Shryock include the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Ray Charles, B.B. King, and Joan Baez. For more information, visit www.siuc.edu/shryock. In the interest of promoting string instru ments, SIUC’s Egyptian Suzuki School offers extracurricular string and piano instruc tion for students young and old throughout the region. The school also partners with Carbondale’s elementary schools and provides violin instruction for all second-graders in the city’s public school district, with oppor tunities to continue into the higher grades. The Southern Illinois Music Festival is yet another annual event sponsored by SIUC’s School of Music. It is an intensive two-week celebration of classical music, ballet, and jazz in the hills of Southern Illinois. Talent, creativity, opportunity — here in Carbondale, they are all alive and well.

Education

A Proud Educational Tradition Carbondale makes education a priority with the influence of a community college and a large university. With a proud tradition in education, Carbondale offers one of the finest school systems in Illinois. Each school provides a multitude of learning opportunities to equip students with the necessary skills to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Public Education Carbondale is uniquely set up into four public school systems. Giant City, Unity Point, and District 95 all serve elementary/junior high students. District 165 serves students at the high school level. Each system has its own superintendent and school board. Carbondale Elementary District 95 Using the talents of 125 teachers and 40 support staff, Carbondale Elementary District 95’s five schools educate approximately 1,400 students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Collectively, students and staff reflect the rich cultural diversity of Carbondale. Almost half of the dedicated and committed staff have Master’s or Doctoral degrees, with many more recognized at the state and national level for their achievements as educators. Teachers and administrators continually evaluate the district’s core curriculum to assure

Lewis School is one of Carbondale Elementary District 95’s five schools.

that it remains aligned with the latest Illinois Learning Standards at all levels. Schools have up-to-date computers, helping to ensure that all district graduates are ready to compete in today’s technology-driven world. The district recently completed a comprehensive con struction, renovation, and expansion project of its facilities. A new, state-of-the-art middle school was built for sixth through eighth grades and now operates as the cornerstone for Carbondale’s educational/recreational Superblock. Beginning at grade four, Carbondale Elementary students have the opportunity to learn several foreign languages. Instrumental and vocal music training is also available at the fourth-grade level, while violin instruc tion is provided to all second-graders. Strong teacher preparation for programs such as Reading Recovery, Everyday Math, Reading Renaissance, and hands-on science has been responsible for the students’ positive test performances. Many students participate in extracurricular science, creative and critical thinking, energy problem solving, history, sports, and fine art programs. Carbondale Elementary District 95’s dis tinctions include: • Reading Renaissance model and master schools

• Math Counts state winners • National awards in history, science, math, and reading • Reading Recovery teacher training cen ter for tri-state area • Distinguished performance in Iowa Basic Skills testing

Carbondale Community High School District 165 Carbondale Community High School (CCHS) is recognized both regionally and statewide as a highly respected high school. The school enjoys a rich tradition of excel lence, supported by a high level of involve ment and pride from all of Carbondale. CCHS is cooperatively involved with Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) and John A. Logan College (JALC) to provide another positive dimension to the school’s educational programs. In 2001, CCHS was named one of the Top 100 Schools in America by offspring.com and the SchoolMatch school evaluation service. In the same year the school ranked No. 1 among all of Southern Illinois schools on the 2001 Prairie State Achievement Exams. Expansion Management magazine has recognized CCHS as a Gold Medal School because of its high graduation rates and graduates’ high collegeboard scores. All of Carbondale is proud of the recent completion of the school’s new home as part of the city’s $40 million Superblock project, featuring its $28 million segment finished in 2003. Special highlights of the new school include a state-of-the-art gymnasium and a 320-seat auditorium, which is open for com munity events. The Superblock also includes 14 soccer fields, nine baseball and softball diamonds, a soccer stadium, a 3,000-seat football stadium, and two running tracks. The

Private Education

Carbondale families also have a variety of parochial and private school choices. Since 1982, parents of adolescents and young adults with complex learning disabilities have known Brehm Preparatory School as the place where their child was able to learn. Brehm provides an education that uniquely integrates the academic, social, and emotional needs of students. Brehm offers a family-style environment designed to foster independence and responsibility. Dedicated teachers, dorm parents, tutors, and staff actively participate in the 24/7 program, and guide students within the everyday school community. Parents, educators, and child-development professionals helped to develop this innovative nonprofit institution, which has served students from 41 states and

Education four foreign countries. The 80-acre Brehm campus is currently home to boarding and day students — 90 students in the junior/senior high and 20 students in the postsecondary program called OPTIONS. OPTIONS is a program that serves the needs of young adults who have the poten tial to be successful in the college or employment environment but are still developing skills necessary to adequately negotiate these ventures. Parents were the advocates of the OPTIONS program, a rarity because of the limited curricula designed for similar post-high-school experi ences. For more information, visit www.brehm.org. Carbondale New School (CNS), a privately owned and oper ated facility for 30 years, has provided quality, progressive education for children from prekindergarten through eighth grade. Among the advantages of CNS is a small class size that allows children to learn at their own pace. Working together, students, teachers, and par ents create a community that fosters and maximizes students’ intel lectual, social, and emotional growth. For more information, visit www.carbondalenewschool.com. Trinity Christian School, which serves grades K–12, provides instruction from a Christian viewpoint and exists “to support Christian families in educating students for lifelong learning, and for com municating the truth of Christ to a world in need of the Gospel.” Trinity Christian School has been serving the greater Carbondale Christian community since 1980. Health Care

Excellent Care in Modern Facilities

C

arbondale is the leader in providing quality health care to the residents of Southern Illinois. Through a commit ment to community and the vision of leaders over many decades, Carbondale has been at the forefront of bringing advanced medical care to the region. Southern Illinois’ second major employer, Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH), is a not-forprofit health care system based in Carbondale. It is the parent company of several area health care facilities, including Memorial Hospital of Carbondale (MHC), Herrin Hospital, and St. Joseph Hospital in Murphysboro. Furthermore, SIH recently assumed opera tions of the Center for Medical Arts, formerly known as the Carbondale Clinic. SIH offers an immense array of excellent services to improve the health and well-being of Southern Illinois residents, while also making a strong, posi tive influence on the area’s economy. Medical professionals provide patients with progres sive medical care comparable to cities several Memorial Hospital of Carbondale has been serving the people of Southern Illinois for over 50 years.

times larger than Carbondale. Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s research and medical career training attracts highly qualified medi cal specialists to the area who are on staff at MHC and many specialty clinics, as well as at private practices throughout the community.

Memorial Hospital of Carbondale The area’s leading medical referral center, Memorial Hospital of Carbondale (MHC), the largest facility of Southern Illinois Healthcare, has been serving the people of Southern Illinois for over 50 years. Since 2004, Thompson, an independent rating agency, has ranked Memorial Hospital of Carbondale as one of the country’s top 100 hospitals! It is home to Illinois’ largest birthing center south of Springfield, delivering nearly 2,000 babies every year. With more than 20 physicians and midwives delivering newborns at Memorial, more women choose to have their babies there than at any other hospital in the region. In 2000, the hospital completed renovation

on the new baby-viewing area and neonatal intensive care nursery. MHC is also home to the leading car diac care program in Southern Illinois. In a team approach, cardiologists from Prairie Cardiovascular, surgeons from SIUC Physicians and Surgeons, and a skilled group of SIH pro fessionals in diagnostics, surgery, and reha bilitation have made an enormous impact on the heart health of Southern Illinoisans. The success of the program is evident as a $7 million outpatient clinic was built on MHC’s campus, making patient appointments more convenient. To enhance the quality care of patients, MHC’s administration prioritizes the purchas ing of state-of-the-art instruments and equip ment as well as the continuous recruitment of new, talented physicians and other health care personnel. Construction began in 2007 on a $14 million third- and fourth-floor addition to the hospital, providing additional inpatient rooms and updating others. The 144-bed hos pital has evolved to provide new services such as tertiary (complex) surgery, neurosurgery, and vascular-thoracic surgery. The hospital offers 24-hour emergency and anesthesiology services and hosts a regional cancer care cen ter, the only Level II-plus neonatal intensive care unit south of Springfield, and the only pediatric unit in Southern Illinois. MHC also features an advanced imaging center with a filmless, digital picture-archiving network that makes all images made at the hospital instantly available throughout the SIH sys tem. MHC is also affiliated with Southern Illinois University’s Medical School through its Family Practice Residency Program and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. SIH and MHC offer a variety of commu nity services, many assisted by volunteers. Included in these services are support groups, community education, health ministry/parish nursing, partnering in a healthy communities coalition, school health, a senior membership program, and many more.

health Care By continuously offering new and improved services, Memorial Hospital gives Southern Illinoisans the opportunity to stay close to home for their superior health care. Complete information for MHC and Carbondale’s large Center for Medical Arts is available at the SIH Web site, www.sih.net, including links to affiliates, health tips, community services, and departments. Information is also available by calling the SIH Referral and Information Center at 866-744-2468.

SIH Center for Medical Arts The Center for Medical Arts was opened in 2007 by Southern Illinois Healthcare, the region’s leading health care system comprised of three hospitals and two clinics. Housed in what was formerly the Carbondale Clinic, the Center encompasses nearly 60,000 square feet of space, making it one of the area’s largest health care facilities. A prompt care clinic is available within the Center to meet the immediate medical needs of patients along with an imaging center, labo ratory services, and pharmacy. Both primary care and specialized medical care are provided including family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, and urology among others. The Center for Medical Arts also is home to the Physicians’ Surgery Center, where a broad spectrum of surgical procedures are performed.

Southern Illinois Regional Social Services Realizing that complete health includes physical, mental, and spiritual aspects, Southern Illinois Regional Social Services

With talented physicians and state-of-the-art equipment, MHC provides top-notch care.

(SIRSS) was established in Jackson County, Illinois, in 1960, as a private, not-for-profit, full-service, community mental health cen ter. With its mission of “building better lives by fostering hope and supporting recovery through prevention, family support, mental health, and substance abuse services,” SIRSS serves the entire Carbondale area and networks with MHC, local public and private schools, Carbondale Clinic, SIUC, law enforcement officials, health care professionals, the judicial system, and many other organizations. Using a variety of methods and programs, SIRSS serves approximately 3,000 persons annually. Youth work, intervention and crisis management, rehabilitation, addiction edu cation and prevention, and individual or group counseling are among the services available through SIRSS. The local chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters is also housed here. SIRSS’ professional and successful practices make a dramatic impact on the people it helps as well as an equally important impact on maintaining Carbondale’s high quality of life. The organization saves the community precious resources in people, time, and fund ing, and helps keep the community’s social fabric intact. All agency services are directed toward building resiliency and strength by helping people through the difficult times in their lives. SIRSS looks forward to the time it can serve more clients easier when it moves into a new location, with construction slated for 2008 at 607 East College Street. Staff and vol unteers have been busy raising money for the new headquarters through a capital campaign. More information about SIRSS is on the Web site, www.sirss.org.
