Progress in Ross County Plenty Achieved With Plenty to Come

t was as if someone flipped the switch in Ross County in early 2011. The Great Recession of 2009–2010 yielded to huge amounts of progress in the county last year with more headed our way in 2012. The first sign of activity came when the Kenworth Truck Company announced plans to increase its build rate throughout the year, going from around 60 trucks a day to more than 120 by September and plans to move beyond that later in the fall. Doubling the build rate takes more employees, many more employees. From about 1,000 workers early in the year, Kenworth jumped to more than 2,200 by September. It

was better than as if the county had just landed a major new factory! The same as many manufacturing operations, the ramp-up at Kenworth also meant its suppliers need to keep pace. One study found that for every 100 jobs added by Kenworth, another 20–25 are created by suppliers. Riffle Machine Works doubled its space and number of employees to more than 200, Vitatoe Industries added workers, ActiveUSA needed more drivers to get the trucks to their destinations and one company, NIC Global, opened a second operation here in addition to the one it has in Tennessee. Across the road, the Adena Health System no more than opened its $45 million expansion of the main hospital than ground was broken on a new $21 million cancer center on the northern

The center, expected to be in operation early in 2012, will add more jobs to the 2,100-plus that worked there in the fall of 2011 and it will provide state-of-the-art care to patients who no longer will need to travel 50 or more miles. The VA Medical Center was in the midst of its $150 million modernization in 2011 with more improvements scheduled in 2012. A biomass generating plant was being built and the first of several new community living centers opened in a building that formerly housed oldstyle hospital operations. Employment there exceeded more than 1,200. A nearly empty warehouse that once stored paper in its 475,000 square feet was coming to life near the end of 2011 as Kitchen Collection and its sister Le Gourmet Chef decided to consolidate distribution operations in the same community in which it is headquartered. The InfoSight Corporation, which â&#x20AC;&#x153;bar codes difficult stuff,â&#x20AC;? doubled its manufacturing space and had plans to add another 40â&#x20AC;&#x201C;50 jobs. Its high-tech machines can be found all over the world in addition to the U.S. The retail and service sector also kept pace. North Bridge Street, the main commercial artery of the city, got even busier with these additions or changes:

• TJMaxx, Christopher & Banks and Kay Jewelers opened in the Chillicothe Mall. • Zane Plaza saw the addition of a Los Mariachis restaurant. • The lot that formerly was home to a Hollywood Video store was torn down to make way for a center that has Aspen Dental, AT&T, Mattress Firm and Game Stop. • The city got its first true Japanese restaurant with the Hana Steakhouse. • Charley’s Grilled Subs renovated and used the operation at a prototype for all its stores. • The city’s very first McDonald’s was demolished in favor of the newstyle, trendier theme for the restaurants. • Long Horn Steakhouse opened in late fall in the Chillicothe Mall, joining its Darden chain brothers, Red Lobster and Olive Garden.

• Walmart finished nearly $1 million in renovations. • Further out U.S. 23, Chillicothe Carpet opened its new headquarters in the new Prairie Run development north of the medical center. National Church Residences completed a multimillion dollar renovation at its Hopeton Village property, adding more assisted living units, on University Drive near Western Avenue. State Electric Company opened its new showroom and distribution center in the Gateway Interchange Industrial Park off Ohio 104. Ohio University-Chillicothe opened its newly expanded technology and entrepreneurship center in late 2011.

hat began a year ago as a pilot project sponsored by the Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce in one elementary in the city school district expands to all four elementaries this year, thanks to the financial support of chamber investors and a grant the district received from the state of Ohio. The Leader in Me initiative of the FranklinCovey organization instills Dr. Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” in the students starting in kindergarten and working through the sixth grade now in Chillicothe schools. The chamber introduced the initiative to all schools in Ross County as a way to teach future workers about thinking proactively, working in teams, respecting others and taking care of yourself both physically and mentally. Allen Elementary was the only school to accept the chamber’s proposal in 2010. Principal Jason Fife and his staff underwent the four

days of training to learn about the 7 Habits and how to make it a way of life in the school without changing the curriculum. The initiative is credited as one reason the school went from “Effective” to “Excellent” in statewide school ratings. • “The 7 Habits got me more reading points and helped me to not get in a fight.” • “I learned not to think only about myself.” • “The 7 Habits helped me by staying proactive. Like making decisions, being responsible, try to be a leader, and a lot of good stuff. When you synergize, you work together.” • “I learned to be responsible. Not to fight, not be a quitter, study harder, and get new friends. Everybody can win and be nice.” After just one year of The Leader in Me, parents notice a difference in their children. “This program is teaching students leadership and other qualities that are making them successful in and out of school,” said Julie Bolen, the mother of a second grader at Allen. “I see my son demonstrating the 7 Habits all the time, whether it’s while doing his homework, playing sports, or interacting with his little brother. “My son comes home after school and is so excited to show me his student planner. He shows me the goals he has set for the week and the work he needs to accomplish. His planner also illustrates his behavior and feelings at school that day. I am so impressed that at age 7 he is so accountable for his school work and behavior!” she said. Worthington Elementary was the second city school to sign on. Following their training, several teachers discussed how they feel it will be a game-changer. One said the concepts can be applied in the classroom, the lunchroom and the playground. “I’m especially excited because (teachers) will all be on the same page,” she was quoted in a Chillicothe Gazette article. Another said the 7 Habits can be used throughout the curriculum, including in literature, as they relate to characters’ interactions, and science, where forming a hypothesis is “seeking to understand,” one of the 7 Habits. While the chamber continues to support the efforts at Allen and Worthington, the district is directing a $75,000 state grant to get the initiative started at Mt. Logan and Tiffin elementaries by late fall 2011. Mt. Logan Principal Matt Thornsberry, who is trained in the 7 Habits, told the Gazette, “Personally and professionally, it’s the best training I’ve ever been a part of.” Superintendent Jon Saxton wrote to the chamber board, “This will enable our children to become better leaders which will ultimately empower them to accept responsibility for their learning and be more successful in school. The training is consistent with the mission and vision of our district and I am proud of what has already been accomplished.”

Chamber members through early fall of 2011 had invested more than $60,000 in the training and supplies for Allen and Worthington and has plans to continue with investments in the coming years to ensure the initiative becomes the culture in the entire district.

Retiring in Chillicothe An Easy Choice for an Active Retirement

he decision of where and when to retire is a tough choice for many people, but for four Ross County couples, the question of where was easily answered, though each had a different reason. For Norm and Karen Raybould, it’s the people. For Larry and Mary Gates, it’s the natural beauty. For Don and Janet Russell it’s their family. For Allen and Pat Rupiper, it’s their farm. All four couples have had careers and lives that have taken them to many places, but when it came time to retire, all four chose Ross County as their home. And all four couples say this is a great place to retire.

Don and Janet Russell knew they wanted to retire someplace they had lived at least 10 years. That made it a choice between Chillicothe and Kingsport, Tennessee. They both started here. Both are graduates of Chillicothe High School and they attended the University of Cincinnati together. After Don started his career with the Mead Corporation as a chemical engineer, the couple got used to moving. As Don moved up the corporate ladder, they moved to several places in Michigan, then to Dayton and then to Kingsport. That’s where they were when their daughters graduated from high school. They came back to Chillicothe for a few years in the early 1990s when Don was the general manager of the Mead Corp. operations here, now Glatfelter. But they went back to Kingsport when Don was named vice president and general manager of the Kingsport operation. Kingsport was where they were when they decided it was time to retire. They had many friends from their long years there. But they still had parents and many friends here, so they decided to come back and settle. “It’s the small-town atmosphere.” Don says. When recruiting executives for the paper plants here, he adds with a laugh, “We always had trouble getting people to transfer here, but once they got here, we had trouble getting them to leave.” Don loves woodworking and here he has a large workshop at an affordable price, he says. He put his skills to use when the couple built their retirement home overlooking the Chillicothe Country Club golf course. They said the access to the Columbus airport was also a draw, as they can easily fly to see their daughter Karen and her family in the Washington, DC area. Their other daughter Deborah kept them flying all over the world, as her career took her to the West Coast, to Australia, to Ireland and then to the East Coast. But she has now made the same decision as her parents and came back to Chillicothe to retire. She and her father built some of furniture and cabinetry inside her new home just up the golf course from her parents. Both Don and Janet remain active in the community. Don is a present or past member of the boards of directors of a number of local organizations, including National Church Residences, and both are active with the First Presbyterian Church.

Al and Pat Rupiper When Allen Rupiper retired as CEO of Adena Health System in 2005, both he and his wife Pat knew they were going to stay on their farm on Crouse Chapel Road, even though neither is from around here originally. “It’s our home, our vacation home and a family business,” Al says of the 60 acres of gently rolling land on both sides of the banks of Kinnikinnick Creek. It’s also close enough to Columbus to get the benefit of city amenities while living in a small town, they said. And it is within a day’s driving of their daughter in Rochester Hills, Michigan, and their son in Chicago, Illinois. They both grew up on a farm, Pat on Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Al in Iowa. But they met in a city, Chicago, at a hospital where Pat was working as a nurse and Al was working in administration. As Al’s career grew, they moved to several locations in the Chicago area and then to Fort Wayne and other cities in Indiana. “Our daughter jokes that she moved 20 times in her first 20 years,” Pat says, adding it’s an exaggeration, but not by much. Their daughter was a sophomore and the son was in the seventh grade when they moved here. And here they stayed.

At first they lived in Chillicothe, where Pat was active with city school groups and community groups. But Pat had always been a gardener. “Even when we were in apartments, I had pots of something growing on the terrace.” In1996, they bought their farm, rebuilt the barn and built a new house. Now, they have a business, Kinnikinnick Farms, and sell their produce at the Chillicothe Farmers Market every Saturday in the spring and summer. Pat does the growing and packaging and Al does all the mowing, plowing and building and takes care of all the equipment. After they bought the farm, Pat and her friend, Bart Henshaw, revived the local farmers market and built it into the event it is today. It is one of the many ways Pat gives back to the community. She also helps with the garden at the Adena Mansion and Gardens and is active in garden clubs. She is a Master Gardener and on the boards of directors of the Ohio Garden Clubs Inc. and also the National Garden Clubs Inc., all of which keeps her very busy along with working on her gardens six to eight hours a day. But it’s a life she loves. A conservationist at heart, she and Al leave part of their land along the creek as a wetland sanctuary and have another part planted in native grasses that provides a wildlife sanctuary. They also have a section planted with native wildflowers to offer sanctuary to monarch butterflies on their migration across the continent. One very special section of the farm is a fen, which is an alkaline bog created by the glaciers. It is listed as a conservation area. Al also stays busy. He puts his executive experience to use as a founding member of the local SCORE chapter, which offers counseling to new businesses. He is also on a number of boards, from the National Church Residences to the United Way. “We want to give back to the community,” he says. They have no plans to leave the small-town lifestyle here and say it is the perfect retirement place for them. “I love to learn and to teach,” says Pat. “We’re never too old to learn and try new things.”

Norm and Karen Raybould The Rayboulds didn’t think twice about where to retire. “We have more friends here than we ever did any place else,” they say. When they first came here, however, Karen wasn’t so sure. She was a big city girl, originally from Chicago. Norm hailed from Cleveland. They met in Michigan. When Norm transferred here with Parker-Hannifin in 1976, which had a plant in Waverly at the time, Karen spent the first weeks still in Cleveland waiting for the house to sell and Norm came home weekends. But they found a house in Chillicothe and started making friends. Very quickly they fell in love with their new hometown and with the friendly people here. In 1978, and Karen got a job she loved at radio station WFCB (B94). That job turned into a 30-plus year career in radio with WFCB and later, WKKJ. About a year later, Karen’s parents came to visit, and they took them to Scioto Trail State Forest. Her parents fell in love with the area and decided to retire here. Later, Norm’s mother also moved here from Florida, and then, eight years ago, his sister moved here from California. “It’s great to have our families around,” Karen says. When Parker-Hannifin moved their Waverly plant, Norm could have transferred and stayed with the company. However, the family was so ingrained into the community that he found a new job as general manager of Chillicothe Electric Supply for Jim Doersam. He later became the human resources director of all the local McDonald’s restaurants which were owned by Ron Fewster. Norm had met both Jim and Ron through he love of slow pitch softball. Norm retired several years ago and Karen just recently retired. Now Norm occasional helps out at Haller Funeral Home and both play golf as often as they can. Karen also loves to ride her bicycle. Both have served the community in various committees and boards over the years, with Norm having served on the United Way, Junior Achievement, Chamber of Commerce and Country Club boards. Now they are enjoying having their son and daughter nearby with their two granddaughters and two grandsons. “We never considered leaving; we’ve made more friends here and tried more activities here than anywhere else. We raised our son and daughter here. It’s home.”

Larry and Mary Gates Larry and Mary Gates love the natural beauty of the place they first called home. Both were born here and graduated from Chillicothe High School, but they didn’t meet until after college when both were working for the Mead Corporation. Larry took a job in Athens and from there was employed with Kraft Foods, a job that would take him a long way from home. The couple moved to Missouri and then to the Chicago area as he kept moving up in his professional career. Their two daughters graduated from high school and university in the Chicago area and still reside there. When Philip Morris acquired Kraft Foods, the couple was transferred to Munich, Germany where Larry was in charge of human resources for all Kraft and General Foods European operations. Both Larry and Mary remember watching the Berlin Wall come down during their time in Germany. When Larry was transferred back to the United States, the couple moved to a suburb of New York City. He was named a senior vice president of Philip Morris Companies reporting to the chairman and board of directors. The lifestyle there was vastly different from the one they live now. Larry spent approximately four hours on a commuter train each day. When he retired, their children wanted them to move back to the Chicago area. But, they decided to come home. “It’s as pretty as any place in the world,” said the couple who have been all over the world. “It’s the only place we ever moved where we knew how to get around the first day,” they laughed. They quickly became active in a number of organizations. With Larry taking the lead and Mary doing the paper work and coordination, they have had a profound impact on the community in a very short time, with Larry chairing the Foundation Committee to build the Child Development Center at Ohio University-Chillicothe. Larry then joined the Regional Coordinating Council at Ohio University-Chillicothe and has served as chairman of the committee for the last three years. Larry served as president of the Chillicothe High School Alumni Association and, along with Jim Lungo, established a scholarship program which now awards scholarships to graduates of Chillicothe High School. As a member of the Board of Directors of Adena Medical Center, he developed the concept for the PACCAR Medical Education Center and spearheaded the fund raising activities with Mike Haller to build the education center. In 2003 Larry and Mary established the Gates Foundation-Ross County Scholar Fund in conjunction with the Ohio University Foundation in Athens. The scholarships are available to any student graduating from a Ross County High School. To date, their foundation has awarded well over 100 scholarships. Mary explained, “The scholarship program has been a wonderful experience for both of us.” It is always gratifying to hear from these young people after they graduate and are well established in their careers. Larry’s most recent endeavor was to serve as honorary chairman of the successful campaign to find a new headquarters for the Ross County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Bristol Village History Realizing a Dream

We felt like it was our home even before we got here.

ristol Village was the dream of a Presbyterian minister to help the elderly and it was the result of a boom when one of the world’s first nuclear enrichment plants was built, and then a bust in a small housing market when the boom faded. Many forces coming together created a first in the nation, a small housing development of single-family homes devoted entirely to senior citizens. As Bristol Village celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011, many will also look back at the earliest days of what became a very successful retirement community. When construction began on the gaseous diffusion uranium enrichment plant (still called the A-plant by many), Pike County was a small rural community and the county seat of Waverly was just a village. When the number of workers building the plant swelled to 22,000 by 1955, new housing was going up at a furious pace. The Estates and Heights were going up in Waverly with the Rittenour Addition in Piketon. These subdivisions featured three-bedroom, one-bath homes and were being snapped up by the permanent workers replacing the construction crews. By the end of 1955, 875 new houses had been built in the Waverly area, the last of which

were Bristol Homes, 325 small houses on Ohio 335 on the north edge of Waverly. In 1956, construction workers were leaving and employment at the A-plant was down to 2,700. By 1961, the number was 1,800. And 323 of the houses in Bristol Homes were empty. In 1960, the Federal Housing Administration took title to the homes in the Bristol Homes addition and asked for proposals to purchase all the homes as a unit. One of the proposals came from a John R. Glenn, minister of the Boulevard Presbyterian Church in Columbus. It was as a young associate minister in Cincinnati, Glenn said, “that my concern for the plight of many of the elderly was nurtured. An associate minister does little preaching but a lot of reaching…. Too often I was saddened by finding the older, retired persons miserable, lonely and isolated … humiliated because of sharply lowered income or embarrassingly dependant to some extent on, too often, reluctant children.” When an FHA announcement soliciting proposals for the property appeared in the Columbus Dispatch, he drove to Waverly to inspect the properties and envisioned a haven where the elderly could live in peace and security.

He went back to Columbus and began to urge his church leaders to help him acquire the property for a senior housing complex. He also convinced the Presbyterian churches in Chillicothe, Waverly and Portsmouth to join the effort. The group submitted a bid and on April 15, 1961, his dream started to become reality when his bid was accepted. Eight days later, Ohio Church Residences Inc. was registered as a non-profit corporation to own and manage Bristol Village. Incorporating members were Presbyterian churches in Columbus, Chillicothe, Waverly and Portsmouth. The group faced a massive effort to raise the funds needed to update and refresh the houses which had been vacant for several years. A joint effort with the village of Waverly brought the development enough funds to secure FHA loans for renovation and to build an activity center. By April 1962, the first residents were moving in and the new retirement community was receiving inquiries from all over the country. It had tapped into a need for retirement housing that has grown since. Today, Ohio Church Residences has become National Church Residences with 316 housing developments across the United State and Puerto Rico, including Traditions of Chillicothe. And Bristol Village now provides, in addition to the original homes, independent living apartments with optional services as needed, assisted living, skilled nursing care and secure Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s/dementia care. The long tradition of active retirement begun by the original occupants also continues with 54 resident-led committees that include programs for all kinds of arts, crafts and woodworking, fitness and wellness and even a new dog park, said Pat Nichols, executive director of Bristol Village. Activities are planned for day trips, cultural groups and programs. Residents can find groups for almost any interest or hobby. But not only do they have fun, residents also support each other and help community organizations. Bruce and Karen Henderson moved to Bristol Village in 2010 from Newark. They looked at a number of retirement communities, Karen said, but none had all the activities that Bristol Village had.

“We felt like it was our home even before we got here. It was a natural fit,” Karen said. She is a retired music teacher and Bruce is a retired minister. Karen said they knew of people in the village through Presbyterian circles. But now, she said, she knows many people and has never known her neighbors as well as she does there. “We became instant friends, it feels like people you’ve known all your life even though you’ve just met them.” Karen is in a number of activities and wants to try even more. A Master Gardener, she has a yard for her own gardening and is a founding member of Pike Gardeners Unlimited, which is providing a plot of land and seeds for anyone in Pike County who wants to grow their own food. She also sings in the church choir and she and her husband are in the drama club production of the Follies. Bruce is also active in the Vespers Committee. “I love Bristol Village and have never looked back,” said Judy Kee. She has lived in the village for 14 years. Raised in the Chicago suburbs, she lived in Ithaca, New York when she was widowed. She said she wanted an active retirement and to live independently, but she also wanted to find a retirement community. She looked at retirement communities in a number of places and was just about to join one in North Carolina when she saw a small advertisement in the AARP magazine for Bristol Village. She made a list of questions about activities and services she wanted and called the Bristol Village office. “They answered all the questions correctly,” she said. She brought her daughters for a visit and she fell in love the community. She echoes Karen in saying the people are so friendly that she made instant friends. She even worked at first in marketing for the community. She also met her husband there. She said her husband, Dennis Kee, moved to Bristol Village about six years ago after he retired as a minister. His wife died not long after. Several years ago, the couple began dating and married. “We are very happy here. People come from all walks of life, but they become friends here,” she added.

hillicothe’s heritage instills a keen sense of pride among its residents, as reflected throughout the community and in articles published about it. Chillicothe also lends its name and character to fictional settings, due in part to its place in history but also to its distinctive name and presumed Midwestern innocence and integrity. Chillicothe appears in diverse fictional works, including novels, short stories, motion pictures, songs, newspaper and magazine commentaries, print and animated cartoons, folk tales, television programs, fabricated news reports, and a Broadway play. Most of the authors clearly refer to Chillicothe, Ohio, but it not always is clear why their characters reside in or pass through Chillicothe. Historical novels emphasize the importance of Chillicothe as an early settlement on the Scioto River (1796) and then as the first capital of Ohio (1803), and authors of contemporary novels set in the region usually include a role for this town at the crossroads of southern Ohio. Many other authors cite Chillicothe, not as a specific geographic location but as a symbolic reference to something larger, as an epitome of Everytown, U.S.A. These instances raise the question to which authors seldom offer a clue: “Why Chillicothe?” Consider these examples from among many: Look magazine in 1971 published a cartoon depicting a disappointed man complaining to a bearded sage high on a mountain peak, “I travel all the way from Chillicothe, Ohio, and your only advice is ‘Keep your options open?’” P. G. Wodehouse, the incomparable English humorist, in Laughing Gas (1936) recounted the experiences of a child movie star kept on a strict diet in Hollywood while dreaming all the while

of the fried chicken his mother used to cook for him in Chillicothe, Ohio, his hometown, “where hearts are pure and men are men” and he was taught “the difference between right and wrong.” Wodehouse later in Ring for Jeeves (1953) introduced readers to “Rosalinda Banks of the Chillicothe, Ohio, Bankses, with no assets beyond a lovely face, a superb figure and a mild talent for vers libre, [who had] come to Greenwich Village to seek her fortune and had found it first crack out of the box.” George S. Kaufman made a young hotel clerk from Chillicothe, Ohio, the title character in his Broadway play The Butter and Egg Man, a comedy that premiered in 1925 for an impressive 243 performances. The likeable and unpretentious Peter took a small inheritance to New York to make his fortune and succeeded in turning the tables on theatrical producers who had designs on his money. The curtain falls as Peter excitedly describes Chillicothe as “a wonderful place — wonderful” and outlines his plans for purchasing his former employer’s hotel. Jean Harlow in her first movie with top billing, Three Wise Girls (1932), portrays a sodafountain worker at Chillicothe Drug Store who joins her best friend in New York, where she suffers an unfortunate love affair and returns heartbroken to serving customers at the drug store. Her lover surprises her by coming to the drugstore and proposing marriage, and her ready acceptance provides the film’s happy ending. W. C. Fields as a young man appeared on the vaudeville circuit in towns large and small before becoming a star on stage and radio and in motion pictures. In his only book, Fields for President (1940), he relates a character-building experience with a performing seal in 1908 while playing the Onyx Theater in Chillicothe, Ohio, and staying at the Iroquois House, two establishments as imaginary as the story itself.

A young woman in The Harvey Girls by Samuel Hopkins Adams (1942) heading west by train in the 1890s to a rough frontier town had attended the Methodist Young Ladies’ Seminary in Chillicothe, Ohio, for two years, where dancing was not allowed and she surreptitiously read dime novels. Thanks to her hard work and the town’s prosperity, she in due course becomes the governor’s wife. Johnny Mercer wrote the song On the Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe for the 1946 movie musical The Harvey Girls as a rollicking tribute to that railroad. Verses added specifically for the movie included “Oh, I’m from Chillicothe — Ohio! / My middle name’s Hi-a-wah-ee — Ohio! / I’m gonna git the gold in them thar hills / So I said good-bye-o, Ohio!” (words that surely contributed to its Academy Award for Best Original Song). Rex Stout is best known for creating detective Nero Wolfe, but he is nearly as well-known for his Archie Goodwin, a street-wise and witty younger detective in New York who teams with Wolfe in solving mysteries. In his novella The Cop-Killer (1951), clients consulting Goodwin express their love for this country, to which he replies, “Wait till you see Chillicothe, Ohio, where I was born. Then you will love it.” Goodwin tells us in The Final Deduction (1961) that he frequents a restaurant “where someone makes chicken pie the way my Aunt Anna used to make it in Chillicothe, Ohio.” While interviewing a man played by Elvis Presley for a job as tour guide in Honolulu, the company president in Blue Hawaii (1961) tests him by asking, “Now then, I am a tourist from Chillicothe, Ohio, and I want to see some night-blooming blossoms: where would you take me?” His correct answer impresses the president and secures him the job. When Ann Margret as a swimming-pool manager in the romantic musical Viva Las Vegas (1964) tells race-car driver Elvis Presley that she

once lived in Chillicothe, Ohio, he repeats the name and says he never has been there. MAD Magazine in October 1966 sorrowfully reported the demise of Donald Duck when hunters mistook him for a wild one, noting in a short obituary that “Duck was born in a marsh near Chillicothe, Ohio,” and became an orphan at the age of five when his parents strayed too close to a pillow factory. In the action movie Battleground (1949), a chaplain begins a service in the field for battleworn American soldiers in World War II by asking, “Any of you from Ohio?” and adding “I’m from Chillicothe.” The film won two Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay, an honor no doubt prompted largely by that revelation. Hanna-Barbera’s animated cartoon series Wacky Races introduced Saturday morning television audiences to the villainous Dick Dastardly, the vivacious Penelope Pitstop, and nine other individuals or teams who race their vehicles across various stretches of the United States. The racers in Hot Race in Chillicothe (November 1968) are not averse to taking shortcuts and playing dirty tricks to impede others as they “zip their zany way toward the finish line in Chillicothe, Ohio,” with Penelope Pitstop finishing a few yards behind the winner. A song released in 1947, Chillicothe, Ohio, extolled the town’s virtues with the repeated phrase “Chill-chill-chill-chill-chill-CHIL-LICOTH-E O-O-hi-o.” Its popularity in the late 1940s and early 1950s might have brought Chillicothe to mind when authors needed an unusual and memorable name. We also can go behind the scenes and engage in some literary speculation about references to Chillicothe, especially by better known authors cited above, such as Kaufman, Stout, and Wodehouse.

Stout’s ancestors purchased land on the original tract on which Chillicothe was founded, and he visited Chillicothe at least once as a child. Wodehouse and Stout thought highly of each other’s literary achievements. Wodehouse referred to Chillicothe in Laughing Gas fifteen years before Stout did in The Cop-Killer, but we can theorize that Stout’s use of the name was triggered, consciously or subconsciously, by Wodehouse’s repeated reference to the town Stout already knew. If so, what prompted Wodehouse to use Chillicothe in the first place? One possibility is Kaufman, whose biographer wrote that Kaufman chose Chillicothe for The Butter and Egg Man because it was the hometown of George C. Tyler, the celebrated theatrical producer. It seems safe to think that Wodehouse as a literary critic, Broadway lyricist, and friend of Kaufman would have seen the play or read the script sometime in the decade between its opening in 1925 and his publication of Laughing Gas. Authors have said that Chillicothe is a funny word without being silly and that it is a name just fun to say aloud, and they often describe our town as beautiful, charming, fine, historic, and picturesque, all worthy compliments without a hint of exaggeration. Shop & Stroll Downtown Delights With Special Saturday Event

he second Saturday of the month just got even better for local shoppers and art lovers. The popular Gallery Stroll in the downtown area transitioned to Shop & Stroll in 2011 to draw even more people downtown on a Saturday evening. The Gallery Stroll began in 2007 as a program of the Pump House Center for the Arts and some downtown art gallery owners to bring more local people into the downtown area to appreciate the architecture and the arts available locally. The event was popular from the start and continues to grow. The Pump House board felt its mission had been accomplished and planned with the Downtown Associates for that group to take over direction and coordination of the event, with the Pump House continuing to participate. The name was changed to the Shop & Stroll to include more businesses in the event. It is now held 5-9 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month. “The Chillicothe Downtown Associates, Inc. is delighted to carry on the tradition of a Second Saturday evening event in downtown Chillicothe, as well as adding some new features,” a news release states. “After four years of the Gallery Stroll, both the Pump House and the Downtown Associates agree that it is time to ‘change things up.’” The change allowed 19 merchants to participate in a recent stroll. Each business plans a special touch for the stroll, which may include artists, music, demonstrations, workshops, historic tours, special events and tastings. A new Shop & Stroll flag was designed to display outside the art galleries, stores and eateries participating in an event. A poster is also displayed in a window. With more participating merchants, the stroll now extends from Water to Main streets and from Walnut to Mulberry streets. Participants can pick up a brochure at any of the participating merchants, get it signed by a certain number of other merchants and be entered for a drawing. The stroll is a great beginning to a fun evening that can include a dinner at one of the downtown restaurants or a relaxing stop in a coffee shop or tavern to hear live music.

Business Expo/BAB Every November, the chamber sponsors an Expo at the monthly Business After Business to give members an opportunity to showcase their products or services at their exhibits. The event is open to the public and attracts hundreds who also vie to receive a door prize that each exhibitor supplies. Reservations for space are taken beginning in early October.

Mailing Labels When you want to get your message directly to all the other members or just a select few, use the set of labels we supply in the format you want: hard copy or in an Excel file we can email to you. You promise to use the information only once. All members are entitled to one set free each year. Additional sets are $50 each. Labels are not available to non-members.

This publication youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re holding goes to every member and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s handed out by our lodging members to their guests, by realtors to those coming to the area looking for housing (and maybe your services) and goes in packets to those who request information on the area. The guide is published by a third party under contract to the chamber. Ad sales generally are conducted in the summer with publication in late December or early January.

Like the directory, the chamber’s map is handed out free of charge to lodging guests who request one, by realtors to their clients and by the chamber to walk-in guests. The visitors bureau makes it a part of its welcome packages. The map is published about every two years and all members are contacted for an opportunity to be included.

Board Meetings Each month, the 20-some members of the chamber board conduct business and have lunch. They love to learn more about other members, so, for the price of the lunch, you’ll get 10–15 minutes to present your message before this group and provide a tour of your facilities, if that’s appropriate. If you don’t have a place big enough, we’ll find the site and you’ll still get your time in front of the group.
