ecorah has already found its way into the conversation about great places to live: Iowa Governor Chet Culver has named Decorah as one of Iowa’s “Great Places.” Decorah received the honor as a “healthy community with great physical attributes, a successful business environment, and active citizen participation that brings tourists to a beautiful spot set apart from much of Iowa with its limestone bluffs and scenic river valley.” Decorah residents are strongly engaged in preserving and sustaining the health of their

community and their environment. The city committed to environmental initiatives well before the “green” movement became everyday front-page news. In 2007, the City Council signed the Kyoto Protocol, a worldwide effort to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, making Decorah one of the smallest communities to commit to the ambitious agreement. The city is working to develop a plan for better energy efficiency, preservation, and other “green” initiatives and is completing a major phase of a citywide trail system, designed to offer

healthy recreation, beauty, and a better way to get around. Local schools are working to educate students on becoming good stewards of this good land, while health care facilities explore ways to lessen their carbon footprint. Also precious is Decorah’s unique heritage, preserved and celebrated through nationally renowned Vesterheim and other carefully maintained historic sites. Northeastern Iowa’s unique beauty inspires artisans, while a brand-new film festival invites participants to talk about the stories and challenges of the community.

Iowa is perhaps best known for its agricultural heritage, which is celebrated through the neighborhood favorite Oneota Community Food Co-op and Seed Savers, dedicated to preserving rare seeds and plants as well as an age-old farming tradition. Local restaurants are coming on board, bringing more and more of the region’s fresh and flavorful meats and vegetables into their kitchens. It’s no wonder Decorah residents embrace sustainability: They have a precious home and heritage to save and to share.

ecorah carries on a tradition of entrepreneurial spirit, which has attracted a new breed of business owners. Green initiatives, targeted recruiting, and aggressive incentives are helping to bring 21st-century entrepreneurs and their knowledge-based and creative enterprises to a child-friendly and adult-engaging community.

Green Initiatives Decorah has definitely been on the cutting edge of the green movement. Long before going green was hip, Decorah residents, educational institutions, and businesses were using everything from wind energy to hybrid vehicle fleets to geothermal energy. In addition, the city of Decorah and the newly formed, nonprofit Winneshiek Energy District have begun talks to form a common vision about sustainability for Decorah, including energy efficiency, land use and storm-water retention, historic preservation, recycling, and green improvements. Energy District is dedicated to promoting stewardship and sustainability in the county. Additionally, the district has also obtained a grant to fund the establishment of an energy improvement cost-share program for homeowners and small businesses in the city of Decorah. As part of the plan, the district will help cover eligible expenses, and work to access all available utility and tax incentives, for participating businesses and homeowners to make energy-efficient improvements. Visit http://energydistrict.org/ for more information on the Winneshiek Energy District and its programs and partnerships.

Outstanding Educational Support Businesses need qualified, well-educated employees to thrive. Decorah offers an educational base that delivers. Decorah’s K–12 public school system is consistently one of the best performing in Iowa — academically and in extracurricular activities.

Decorah carries on a tradition of entrepreneurial spirit, which has attracted a new breed of business owners.

Information from Decorah High School included the following statistics: • Graduation rate: 98.17% • ACT average score: 22.5 (Iowa 2006 average score: 22.1; national 2006 average score: 20.9) Additionally, Decorah is home to Luther College, one of the finest private liberal arts colleges in the nation.

Decorah Business Park Decorah Business Park, which opened in 1999, continues to draw industry. Randy Uhl, director of Winnieshiek County Development, said, “Nine lots have sold in the Decorah Business Park since its opening, a fairly fast pace considering most business parks require roughly 30 years to fill out.” Uhl says that all commercial lots along Highway 9 have been sold, but a few commercial lots and a significant number of manufacturing lots are still available in the interior of the park. The park

is conveniently located just east of Decorah, right across from Decorah Municipal Airport.

Local Business Incentives • Tax Abatement: Both the city of Decorah and Winneshiek County offer tax abatement in select situations to assist a new or expanding business in making improvements to their property. When taxes are abated, the property owner continues to pay taxes on the property at the rate before improvements are made to that property. The increased amount of taxes is abated for a set period of time. • Loan Funds: Funding is offered to new or expanding businesses via the Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) and the Intermediary Relending Program (IRP) offered through Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission in Postville. These loans are available to businesses for which credit is not otherwise available on terms and conditions that permit completion of proposed business activities.

Drawing Educated & Involved Residents Each community is most dependent on its people for prosperity. Decorah’s outstanding qualities are not only drawing the educated young professionals needed for a 21st-century economy, but also a new breed of active and engaged retirees, who have the leisure and the means to contribute to and sustain the region’s prosperity. Having returned to the area after living in downtown Chicago, Luther grads Mark Lovelace and Lea Donhowe Lovelace speak of the draw of their former residence. “We were thrilled to see so

many young professionals in Decorah. We love the fact there is a diverse culture of progressive, thinking people here. There is always something going on: recreationally, culturally, or with the kids. It may be a small town, but our pace hasn’t slowed down at all.” Retirees are finding that Decorah offers tranquility without sacrificing the rich cultural experiences of big cities. Bob Jones, retired attorney and Luther grad, and his wife Darlene knew Decorah was a good fit for their retirement needs. They built a new home adjacent to the Luther College campus. “It’s nice to get away from the traffic and the noise and come home to someplace peaceful and scenic,” Jones said. “There’s so much going on on-campus. We already have our Center Stage series season tickets, and we may attend some lectures, or even take a class. We’re very excited about this move.” In addition, retirees Myrv and Anne Christopherson have already taken advantage of one of the region’s most exciting adventures, tubing down the Upper Iowa River with their family. The Christophersons note that the Decorah area offers so many amenities that it’s now cost-effective and easy to enjoy such pleasures. Before moving to the area, they said, “we didn’t have time for such a luxury.”

Saving Paper, Saving Trees The Disney Planet Challenge encourages school-age kids from around the country to put in their two cents about saving the planet. In the 2009–10 competition, Decorah Middle School fifth graders, under the guidance of teacher Sarah Nowack, rose to the challenge, developing an electronic proposal called “Mission: Saving Paper, Saving Trees.” Their project was a runner-up in the Iowa division; but more importantly, it gave students invaluable insight into teamwork, the scientific method, and what they themselves could do to help the environment. The project began with students — all volunteers — discussing what their school could do to positively impact the environment. While the school already had a paper recycling program in place, the kids felt that the school could do even better at reusing paper. They tracked how much paper was being used, as well as how much of the paper placed in recycling bins could actually have been used again before recycling. They then produced a video to show classmates how to reduce their paper usage and to encourage them to use up paper thoroughly before placing it in a recycling bin. Teachers got 6

in on the lesson as well, as the students attended a faculty meeting to demonstrate the same principles. Finally, the students wrapped by re-tracking paper usage after the presentations to determine the effects of their efforts. The students of Decorah Middle School learned a valuable lesson that we all can benefit from: When it comes to saving the Earth, the power is in our hands.

The Art of Good Health For some, practicing healthy habits is a lost art. But the North Winneshiek Community School District is mindful of both good health and art: both the fine and culinary arts, that is. For one, the school district is trying to get its students to eat healthier. Using grant money received from the NE Iowa Food & Fitness Initiative, middle school students are growing their own healthy lunch. “We have a garden that we are using to grow vegetables for the cafeteria,” Superintendent Tim Duggar said. “It’s a ratatouille garden, and all the crops we harvest this fall will be served as a ratatouille lunch.” The North Winneshiek Community School District is also growing artists. One of only two school districts in Iowa to be honored, North Winneshiek won the prestigious Iowa Association of School Boards’ Education and the Arts Award. Care of God’s Creation Ruth Palmer, principal at St. Benedict School, teaches her students that sustainability is more than a civic duty: it is an outgrowth of God’s charge to His creation. With this in mind, Palmer and St. Benedict celebrate “Care of God’s Creation” during the month of April as part of their focus on stewardship, a theme St. Benedict School has stressed for several years, says Palmer. “The whole stewardship program focuses on taking care of what God has given us and sharing that in the world,” she said. The nuts and bolts of St. Benedict’s program include using recycled paper for any student materials where St. Benedict is able, upgrading light fixtures for more energy-efficient lighting, and working with the County Extension to plant trees at student homes or an accessible place. Palmer notes that the fifth and sixth graders also study wetlands. “They took a trip to a wetlands area, where they built a pond. Part of the emphasis was to teach children about the vital role wetlands play in our ecosystem.” As a steward of the earth, Palmer underscores her school’s commitment to preservation. “All of our teachers believe in the importance of preserving the earth for this generation and successive ones.” St. Benedict School Fast Facts • Accredited by the State of Iowa, offering a developmentally appropriate academic curriculum based on standards and benchmarks approved and developed by the Archdiocese of Dubuque.

estimated 3,000 pounds of paper, 3,600 pounds of cardboard, and 550 pounds of tin and plastic each week. In addition, Luther College plans to install a Vestas V82 wind turbine to supply some of its power needs. The turbine will have a 1,650-kilowatt-hour electrical nameplate generation capacity and will be located on land northwest of the city limits of Decorah, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 52 and Madison Road. Luther College President Richard L. Torgerson stresses the value of this initiative. “The installation of the turbine will help Luther achieve one of the college’s major sustainability goals, which is to reduce campus greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent while reducing campus electricity consumption,” said Torgerson. “The project will also serve to educate students and the community about the potential of renewable energy, wind energy in particular.” The wind turbine’s potential to produce 4.9 million kwh of renewably produced electricity will enable Luther College to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 14.6 percent, adding to the already 15.5 percent reduction from its $1.5 million energy-efficiency audit in 2004.

Innovative Initiatives For Luther College, practicing sustainability doesn’t mean recycling verbiage. The college is firmly committed to green practices and conservation. The 2010 College Sustainability Report Card highlights that commitment, recognizing Luther as one of the top 26 colleges/universities practicing sustainability — this in the midst of a slumping economy. In support of its efforts, Luther has created a website, www.luther.edu/sustainability, which outlines the college’s several initiatives and activities that support sustainability. These include a rideshare program in which students, faculty, and staff can offer and post rides using the Google Maps interface; an offer for faculty and staff to sign up for a plot of land in the Luther Community Garden; and a recycling program that in 2009 recycled an

Luther is supporting local farmers as well. In its five-year strategic plan, the college set a goal of purchasing 35 percent of its food from local sources. Already, Luther’s local food purchases have increased from 2 percent to 17 percent, sourced from the approximately 17 local producers located within a 100-mile radius of campus. The college is also sustaining the hungry. At the fifth annual Empty Bowls project, Luther College and the tri-state community raised approximately $21,000 for local food pantries and world hunger relief. Part of a nationwide effort, the Empty Bowls project has participants select handmade bowls to use during the meal and as a keepsake to remind them that there are always empty bowls — hungry people — in the world. In 2010 volunteer potters made approximately 1,400 bowls. Area restaurants and community volunteers donated more than 150 gallons of soup, enough for more than 800 meals. Luther has sought other innovative means to save resources. GoPrint, the college’s print management solution, tracks printing usage and allocates printing costs on campus. The program is part of a campuswide effort to reduce paper waste and encourage better management of resources. During the fall 2009 semester, each of the approximately 2,200 students on campus was allocated 400 pages of printing, with the potential for nearly 900,000 printed pages. As testimony to the success of the program, only 307,948 pages were actually printed. Luther has a host of other programs, including initiatives on recycling and waste reduction, education, land use, departmental programs, transportation, energy, and food. A Breath of Fresh Air For Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) students, the notion that the “answer is blowing in the wind” is no longer just lyrical whimsy. The college is actually putting Iowa wind power to good purpose by educating students in repairing wind-powered turbines. Tracy Kruse, NICC’s director of external relations, said, “It’s one of the priorities of the governor to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. We have wind turbines throughout western Iowa, and other programs are focused on building and erecting wind turbines; but our program focuses on electrical components of wind turbines and their maintenance.” The program is proving popular. For the fall, it is already full and has a waiting list. Northeast Iowa Community College Fast Facts • NICC offers Associate in Arts and Associate in Science transferable degrees, technical degrees, continuing education, and workforce development. • Students can choose majors from more than 75 programs such as business, computers, health, industrial technologies, and agriculture, with 13 programs now being offered completely online. • NICC serves nearly 5,400 students and has campuses in Calmar and Peosta, along with centers in downtown Dubuque, Cresco, New Hampton, Oelwein, and Waukon. • NICC regularly meets with business and industry to assess training needs and secure funding. Winneshiek Medical Center Winneshiek Medical Center will improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions with the support of the State Energy Program (SEP), Alliant Energy, and the surrounding community. SEP has awarded Winneshiek Medical Center $209,912 in support of this project, which, when complete, could save the medical center $116,000 per year with a $600,000 investment in specific energyconserving measures. The remaining funds will be provided by Alliant Energy loans and local support. Dave Jordahl, chief operating officer at Winneshiek Medical Center, said, “Like many rural hospitals in the state, Winneshiek Medical Center has aging utility infrastructure, which directly affects our energy consumption and our ability to be energy efficient. Although there is an initial cost, we are confident the energy savings will more than cover project costs over time, and the SEP award will significantly improve WMC’s ability to implement these needed changes.”

Gundersen Lutheran’s environmental stewardship program, Envision, is designed to achieve not only reduction, but also preservation of resources, with a goal of being 100 percent energy neutral. Gundersen Lutheran (GL) uses energy-efficient equipment, medical technologies, office supplies, and building materials to improve the performance of its facilities. In partnership with General Electric, Gundersen Lutheran conducted an energy audit of its La Crosse campus that will help achieve a 20 percent reduction in energy use and more than $800,000 in annual savings. All of Gundersen Lutheran’s facilities will have 100 percent of their energy needs offset by renewable energy generated by GL through its own electrical and gas generation equipment. In addition, GL is building a comprehensive energy infrastructure with projects such as biogas, wind, and solar power. As part of an impressive 29 percent recycling rate, GL recycled over 2.1 million pounds of concrete, brick, block, and asphalt; reclaimed copper; and used other reusable materials on construction projects over the last three years. In just one year, Gundersen Lutheran recycled 260 tons of paper, and 23 percent of GL’s contracted office supplies are made from recycled materials. Gundersen Lutheran is exploring innovative technology to reduce consumption and to handle waste in a more sustainable and safe system. This strategy ensures chemicals, medicines, and other toxins do not end up in lakes, streams, or community drinking water. Finally, all future new construction for Gundersen Lutheran will be LEED Certified. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices.

Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum’s name is an inadequate description of its glory: The “museum” is beyond an attraction — it is an experience, a veritable rip in the space-time continuum. “Much of the history and culture the museum showcases is shared by Decorah, and the town, in some senses, is an extension of the museum’s exhibitions and programming. Even the city’s large summer festival, Nordic Fest, is tied to Vesterheim and its mission, and the museum has an economic impact of over $5 million annually on the surrounding area,” said Charlie Langton, editor of the organization’s publications. pioneer log homes; a log parochial school; a blacksmith shop; a stabbur, or storage building; a shed for drying savory hops; an early house of stovewood construction; a prairie house; and a Lutheran church. “Perhaps the major challenge the museum faces is being a large, internationally recognized museum located outside a major metropolitan area; however, Vesterheim’s mission and character are inseparably linked to the predominantly Norwegian-American town it was founded in and the college where it began. Although the museum does not enjoy the same attendance advantages enjoyed by museums in larger cities, it could not exist as perfectly as it does anywhere else,” Langton said. Early home furnishings, cooking paraphernalia, a Norwegian home, sail and fishing boats, quilts, clothing, toys, wood art, and silver artifacts await, ready to whisk visitors to the days of Decorah’s earliest heritage. Passing Norwegian settlers’ heritage to a new generation, Vesterheim also offers classes that include rosemaling (decorative painting), woodcarving, woodworking, knifemaking, and the textile arts. USA Today named Vesterheim one of “10 great places in the nation to admire American folk art.” This national treasure uses the Norwegian-American experience as a lens to explore the diversity of an immigrant nation.

houses in this part of town. The district is home to many more of Decorah’s historic attractions, including Hotel Winneshiek, the Octagon House, and Porter House.

Hotel Winneshiek www.hotelwinn.com

When it opened in 1904, the grand hotel included a billiard room, barber shop, cigar counter, and bar, along with 51 guest rooms. Through the 1970s, 1980s, and much of the 1990s, the property declined and was used as apartments and retail space. But in 1998, Helen Basler bought the hotel and began a thorough renovation. The remodeled hotel now possesses its original charm and grandeur and boasts gourmet dining, luxury accommodations, and the ideal historic setting for weddings and gatherings.

Octagon House Robert Logan built Octagon House in 1856. The octagon style was favored by many early American leaders, including Thomas Jefferson; yet fewer than 400 such homes still stand in the United States today. The house — sporting a cupola it no longer has — shows up prominently on an 1870 map of Decorah. Porter House www.porterhousemuseum.com

Porter House museum is a testament to the life and times of owners Adelbert and Grace Porter and includes

their personal furnishings, collections, art work, photographs, and library. D.B. Ellsworth, a prominent Decorah merchant, built the lavish Italianate villa in 1867. A collection of exotic butterflies is a focal point of the museum. The grounds include a unique rock wall, designed by Bert and built in 1930 from his extensive collection of rocks and minerals. The wall’s design includes many hidden “water beasts.”

Winneshiek County Courthouse The striking downtown Winneshiek County Courthouse is unmistakable with its 138-foot coppercovered dome, slate roof, and giant clock, all beautifully pieced together in the Renaissance Revival style. Oneota Film Festival www.oneotafilmfestival.org

neota Film Festival will be showing motion pictures for only the second time in January 2011, but it has already carved a niche and exceeded expectations. Executive Director Kyrl Henderson was inspired after attending the Frozen River Film Festival in Winona, Minn. “I thought, ‘There’s no reason in the world that we can’t do this in Decorah,’” he said, “What we have is an opportunity to tell a story; to have an event that can be fun and informative and bring the community together.” The festival hopes to present information not otherwise being conveyed in a context that can benefit the community in many ways. Henderson says the festival generates ideas and prompts viewers to ask questions. “How do we live together? How do we work together? We’re about presentations that identify stories that are issues in our region. Somebody needs to get the conversation started.” The festival includes panel discussions with community members, sparking conversations about the films that focus on solving problems locally. The featured films addressed the nation’s food and water supplies, conservation and environmental issues, and the wonders of nature. Still, the Oneota film festival differs from others. “We don’t have a specific political agenda with respect to the films that we show,” Henderson noted. “Most do express opinions — that’s the nature of the documentary film — but we tried to mix it up.” Some movies of note in 2010 included Paddle to Seattle, Oil+Water, The Seed Hunter, and American Eagle. While the films definitely gave food for thought, those attendees who might have expected a dreary “gloom and doom” atmosphere at the proceedings were left surprised. Henderson says the organizers “don’t want it to be seven hours of films beating you up over how [bad] the world is.”

In addition to giving viewers and panelists a welcome venue, Henderson says the festival benefits hotels, restaurants, and stores. “Economic development was Photo by the first thing on my mind.” kyrl@kyrl. com ©20 10 As for organizing the event, Henderson says it was smooth sailing. The festival’s partners — Luther College, Seed Savers Exchange, Sodexo, and the Decorah Regional Arts Council — worked with the business community and area residents, and organizers sold every ad and every sponsorship. “Every opportunity that we created for businesses and other community organizations to participate was taken up,” Henderson said. “Hundreds attended the first event; the support from the community was outstanding.” Telluride and Sundance are also off-season, remote communities that have become household names through famed film festivals. But Henderson says that Oneota isn’t striving for similar fame; they’re focusing on Decorah and the region. “We’re just trying to be the little film festival that could.”

Recreation Abundant Ways to Explore Beautiful Northeastern Iowa

Happy — and Healthy — Trails Members of the Decorah community have expressed interest in the creation of a recreational trail system for decades, so in 2000, when the Trails of Winneshiek organization first formed, they fielded many different trail concepts from an eager public. But now, as construction of the 12-mile Trout Run Trail reaches the home stretch, the result is even better than anyone had dreamed. Entirely paved and handicapped-accessible throughout, the multi-use loop is becoming the thread that ties together stunning natural beauty, public art, community access routes, and amazing outdoor opportunities in Decorah.

By Jay Nehrkorn

The recreational value of Trout Run Trail for hikers, runners, bikers, outdoorsmen, and crosscountry skiers is obvious, and the community is excited about the growing potential as new miles continue to be added. “The most scenic aspect of our trail was just completed at the end of last season, so we’re anxious to have people come into town to follow that path and tell us what they think,” said Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Nikki Brevig. “That part of the trail has incredible views, and it’s a portion that people really didn’t have the opportunity to take advantage of during the last

tourism season. It’s one more thing that adds to the whole community as a tourism destination and yet another opportunity for outdoor recreation.” Trout Run Trail begins at Decorah’s Pulpit Rock Campground, adjacent to Twin Springs State Park. Following the river as it arcs around the downtown area, the trail then offers a choice of proceeding through a skateboarding park or crossing the river to access a 17-mile system of premier mountain biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing trails in the parks on the north and east sides. Skirting the edge of the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds and swinging around Carlson Pond, the path continues on as it makes its way to Trout Run Park. The next leg of the trail follows Trout Run Stream to the state fish hatchery and beyond, greatly enhancing Decorah’s outstanding trout fishing opportunities. Trout Run Stream is a destination visited by thousands of fishermen each year, but sportsmen had historically been concentrated in the half-mile stretch where access was easiest. Today, with Trout Run Trail in place and other improvements provided by the Iowa DNR, access has been extended, and the stream has become the first in the state with points that can be fished from a wheelchair. Beyond Trout Run Trail’s recreational appeal, it has health benefits not only for people, but for the environment, as residents now have a healthy alternative for commuting around town. The trail itself and its associated spurs are designed to offer easy access to the high school, athletic fields, a fitness center, the west end of Main Street, health facilities, retail shopping, and other destinations throughout town. Mike Huinker, who has been with Trails of Winneshiek since the beginning, said that this was always part of the bigger picture. “Generally, it’s a conduit for people to get to and fro without having to use the roads,” he explained. “We’d like for people to be able to come from their

Memorial Park, Palisades Park, and the Decorah Ice Cave State Preserve combine to provide over 300 acres of explorable natural terrain. These areas include an outstanding 17-mile system of singletrack mountain bike trails that are home to competitive biking events and provide excellent hiking and cross-county skiing opportunities. On the west side of town, the city’s premier campground offers nearly 170 gravel, grass, and pullthrough camping sites with amenities such as electrical hookups, ice and wood sales, bathhouse facilities, playground equipment, and a trout stream for fishing or canoe access. The campground is adjacent to Twin Springs State Park — a popular fishing and hiking destination — and is linked to other Decorah recreational hot spots via the Trout Run Trail. The Parks & Recreation Department maintains after-school programs and sports clinics for small children, and they provide intramural volleyball and basketball leagues for high-school students. Adult leagues include softball, volleyball, and threeon-three basketball. The parks also host a variety of special events such as movie nights, parties, and holiday gatherings. With beautiful butterfly gardens, a scenic waterfall, and other natural wonders, Decorah’s parks are popular for weddings and other special occasions.

Decorah Parks & Recreation: Not Just Benches and Basketball

With scenic waterways and a beautiful patchwork of farmland, brushy draws, and wooded bluffs, Winneshiek County is ideal habitat for outdoor adventure seekers. From its exciting float trips to its premier fishing and hunting opportunities, the county is the epitome of what makes northeastern Iowa a great destination for outdoorsmen. neighborhood and get on it to travel to school or work. As the trail and connectivity to it continue to develop, I think we’re going to develop an even bigger biking culture, which is better in so many ways. It’s better for our health, it’s less expensive, it’s better for the roads, and it’s a greener way to do it.” The final stages to achieve the loop back to the campgrounds include the construction of approximately two miles of trail through scenic farmland in 2010 and a connecting bridge over the intersection of highways 9 and 52, which is anticipated some time in 2011. Community leaders are already looking ahead toward further integration of water trails and spur extensions that will make Trout Run Trail an even greater asset. Still, as the initial project approaches completion, they’re also taking time to look back at the endeavor with a sense pride in the community and immense gratitude to the governmental partners, grant providers, private landowners, and volunteers who have all played a role in making the trail a reality. “Sometimes a community can be polarized on certain issues, but this is one topic that has received widespread support from many different parties, including the grass-roots general public, the city, the county, and so many partners they’re too numerous to even name,” Huinker said. “It’s amazing what we can do when we really work together.”

The city of Decorah maintains over 500 acres of public facilities and provides recreational programs that make outdoor fun and staying fit a way of life in Winneshiek County. quadrant and the Yellow River in the southeast; but it’s the Upper Iowa River and its tributaries that have made the county famous as a canoeing, kayaking, and tubing hotspot. The Upper Iowa was one of the initial rivers recommended by congress as a National Wild and Scenic River, and a trip along the river still offers stunning scenes: wooded and wild in some places; framed by 200-foot limestone bluffs in others. Most popular among canoe enthusiasts is the winding, 30-mile stretch from Kendallville to Decorah, which alternates between class-1 rapids and quiet pools. Those seeking solitude and open scenery can continue on the river east of town toward Freeport and the Coon Creek area. The rivers and cold-water streams of Winneshiek County are also known for fabulous fishing, with the Decorah Fish Hatchery stocking up to 17 streams over a four-county area. Thousands of fishermen flock to the county each year to try their hand at catching rainbow, brown, and brook trout — a unique opportunity in the Midwest. While trout fishing may be king, angling for walleye and hard-fighting small-mouth bass on the Upper Iowa River should not be overlooked. Sportsmen who take to the field with gun or bow will also find what they’re looking for, with public wildlife management areas available in the Coon Creek, Cardinal Marsh, and Bear Creek areas, as well as other spots along the Upper Iowa River basin. Iowa is renowned for deer hunting, and Winneshiek County is certainly no exception when it comes to trophy whitetails. Waterfowl hunting is also popular during the annual duck and goose migration, and the area is seeing a growing population of resident Canada geese and wood ducks as well. Hunting for wild turkeys has become a springtime favorite, while upland hunters can pursue pheasants, rabbits, and other species each fall.

A Bird’s Eye View Almost every community has some sort of connection to a celebrity, but Decorah is unique in that its most famous residents live in a tree. Thanks to the Raptor Resource Project and other local partners, a live Internet reality show starring the town’s nesting pair of bald eagles has thousands of viewers logging on to get a look at Decorah’s wild side. The Raptor Resource Project (RRP) was originally established in Minnesota the late 1980s, but relocated to an area near Decorah in 1997 to embark on a successful effort to get falcons to breed on cliffs. Director Bob Anderson and RRP then became involved in the filming of a bald eagle documentary for the Nature series on PBS in 2007 and 2008. As part

of that project, the group installed cameras in a local nest across the road from the Decorah Fish Hatchery. “That nest was featured a great deal in the film The American Eagle, and it was obvious to us when we were filming that there was a lot of local interest and ownership in the nest because the pair is so prominent here in the city,” Anderson said. “So I decided to put it on the Internet and link it to the RRP site. Xcel Energy hosted the bandwidth and it became an overnight sensation. This year, we decided to take it up a notch and replaced the cameras with color-day/infrared-night.” Approximately 86,000 unique computers logged on over a million times to access Decorah Eagle Cam in 2009, and the 2010 totals were well over twice that amount — including over 70,000 on Easter Sunday

alone as the eaglets were hatching. Luther College now graciously hosts the site in order to help with the growing bandwidth requirements. Followers are so devoted that they send e-mails asking if a bird has fallen if it disappears from camera view for a while. Anderson says that he is motivated to continue the work with this and other RRP raptor video feeds because they are widely used in curricula in schools across the country. “Most of my work was in captive breeding and recovery of endangered falcons, but now my life has taken a bit of a change because the bird cams have so much of a following and are important to so many teachers, schools, and classes,” he said. To access live or recorded footage of the Decorah eagles and other amazing raptors, visit the RRP website at www.raptorresource.org.

Seed Savers Exchange www.seedsavers.org

Saving seeds is the traditional method of agriculture. Much of the world has drifted away from it over the decades as farming and even gardening saw the effects of corporatization. Because of that, some varieties of seeds are in danger of being lost. Stepping into the breach to preserve an amazing collection of rare garden seeds is Seed Savers Exchange, a nonprofit, member-supported organization that saves and shares the heirloom seeds of our garden heritage, forming a living legacy that can be passed down through generations. Loyal Seed Savers Exchange members have distributed hundreds of thousands of samples of rare garden seeds. Those seeds are now widely used by seed companies, small farmers supplying local and regional markets, chefs, home gardeners, and cooks. “Seed banks are one of the great ways to safeguard seeds; the other is to have the seeds growing in gardens far and wide,” said Exchange President Aaron Whaley. Seed Savers Exchange was founded in 1975 by Diane Ott Whealy and Kent Whealy to honor the tradition of preserving and sharing. Their collection started when Diane’s terminally ill grandfather gave them the seeds of two garden plants — Grandpa Ott’s Morning Glory and German Pink Tomato — which his parents brought from Bavaria when they immigrated to St. Lucas, Iowa, in the 1870s. Today, 890-acre Heritage Farm, located in Decorah, is home to the largest non-governmental seed bank in the United States with the intent to make the seeds available to the general public. It

permanently maintains tens of thousands of endangered vegetative varieties, most having been brought to North America by members’ ancestors who immigrated from around the world. The farm is ringed by 8.5 miles of hiking trails that take visitors through majestic scenery, past some of the 23 acres of certified organic preservation gardens, historic orchards, and ancient White Park cattle. Visitors are welcome at Heritage Farm from March through December. The Lillian Goldman Visitors Center is open weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donations are suggested to help with preservation work. Guided tours and bus tours are available for $3 per person and can be arranged by calling 563-382-5990 in season.
