HAPPY, HEALTHY LIVING
T
here are many words to describe the region surrounding Decorah, located amid the scenic bluff country of northeast Iowa; but perhaps the most apt is “healthy.” From a thriving and growing locavore movement, to an initiative that takes the practices of good nutrition and physical activity into schools, to health care facilities growing their own vegetables for patients, this is an area that takes the health of the body very seriously and has actively taken steps to make sure residents can embrace a healthy lifestyle. It’s a commitment that is shared in a recently completed trail system that encourages walking and biking and in the WinnWell initiative to encourage healthy living. It’s a drive that just seems logical in a region blessed with a beautiful outdoor environment that’s perfect for an active lifestyle. And it’s a commitment that goes beyond the human body to the natural environment residents are blessed with. Regional residents have been “green” for a long time, and through such

initiatives as hybrid vehicle fleets, “buy local” initiatives and encouraging alternative energy use, they’re keeping their home healthy, too. The famous resident bald eagles fly high here, studied and protected in a community that’s thrilled to have them as neighbors. Initiatives like the construction of a new, state-of-the-art fiber optic network and active economic development agencies ensure a strong and healthy economy, while abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation and exploring the region’s amazingly rich historical heritage mean residents enjoy an outstanding quality of life, too. The Decorah area continues to successfully balance maintaining a healthy, small-town Midwest heritage with confident participation in a 21st-century world. It’s a combination that makes this community unlike any other; uniquely and equally appealing to everyone, no matter their age, profession or interest. We welcome you to Winneshiek County.

here have been a number of studies showing the positive impact of being a part of your Chamber. Membership in your local Chamber offers countless benefits and keeps business owners on top of important, ever-changing issues at local, state and national levels. Also, consumers are more likely to do business with those that are members of the local Chamber of Commerce.
Building Our Community The Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce works with many local government, educational and economic development agencies to bring great things to the Decorah area. With a focus on economic health and quality of life the DACC strives to be the leading voice of business and is an active participant in many local groups, organizations and initiatives to better serve the greater community. Some examples of how the DACC works to serve the best interests of the community: Serving on the board of the Iowa Chamber of Commerce Executives keeps the DACC informed on issues at the state level and gives an opportunity to learn from others in the Chamber industry. Participating in the Northeast Iowa Regional Chamber Group allows the DACC to promote the entire region and assist surrounding communities in their continued success. The DACC works to be your leading source on education regarding important local business issues. The DACC has advocated on pro-business agenda items, including commercial property tax reform, the Road Use Tax Fund and the Marketplace Fairness Act.
Important work for businesses? Definitely. But work that also benefits the entire community through investment in infrastructure and amenities and increased employment opportunities. “It’s been wonderful to see our business community continue to grow and thrive,” Nikki Brevig, Executive Director, said. “The area has so many things to offer, and we keep progressing forward. We’re proud to help create the opportunities we have here — many that are atypical to the average small community.”
Promoting Members The number-one focus of the Decorah Area Chamber is helping members grow their businesses. Members enjoy several exclusive benefits: Communication: The DACC works to communicate effectively with members, your customers and the general public. It serves as a curator and manager of local information. If you don’t already have a Web presence, the DACC is positioned to get a business set up and to start driving traffic to its door. All Web features are included in the price of membership. Businesses will also have access to business alerts, Friday Focus Email, monthly newsletters, calendars, press releases and a listing on the online directory. The DACC has built a brand-new mobile friendly website and mobile app, making the area accessible to everyone near and far. Cost savings: With such benefits as bulk mail permits, membership mailing labels, access to meeting space and technology, and planning facilitation, businesses will realize a return on investment in no time. Marketing opportunities: Chamber publications such as this book, city/county maps and relocation packets are distributed not only all around the community, but nationwide.
Businesses can also choose sponsorship of local retail promotions or on the DACC website. Economic development: Chamber members enjoy access to the best in resources, including loan programs and business startup assistance. Networking opportunities: Meet your fellow members at a variety of events, including Chamber After 5’s, Chamber Gala or the Golf Outing. Paying It Local: The DACC has increased the Chamber Dollar program, which has distributed more than $200,000 this year, keeping dollars in the local economy. It doesn’t stop there. Member businesses will be promoted at the Welcome Center and when the DACC receives inquiries for services. The DACC will celebrate a business’s success with ribbon cuttings and boost their bottom line with programs like Chamber Dollars and Pay It Local promotions. The DACC staff works to answer service inquires, serves as a liaison with government officials, provides financial and informational services to members, and more. In fact, there’s so much to what the DACC does that no two days are ever exactly the same. “Basically, we meet our business community needs in whatever form is necessary for that day. It’s never the same and is driven by what projects and programs are the highest priority,” said Chamber Executive Director Nikki Brevig.

Economy 21ST-CENTURY STRENGTH
P
rimed to succeed in a 21st-century economy, the Decorah region’s government leaders, businesses, residents and development agencies have built a broad-shouldered economy based on forward-thinking initiative, outstanding education and the amenities needed for modern businesses to thrive. The latest news is a fiber optic network that puts the community in the fast lane when it comes to digital connection to a worldwide audience.
Metronet Fiber Optic Network Decorah is getting better connected. In the summer of 2013, Decorah’s Metronet Fiber Optic Network will connect six anchor members via a fiber optic network that will serve 17 community locations. Entities such as the city of Decorah, Decorah Community School District, Luther College, Winneshiek County, Winneshiek Medical Center and the Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission formed this partnership as part of a broad plan to build a network with more reliable Internet speeds and capacities. The new network will consolidate Internet access to one shared

source and reduce the current cost of gaining Internet access. “By designing, building and owning a fiber network, members will be able to buy Internet access on the wholesale market and provide it to the members at a much reduced cost over retail,” explained Decorah City Manager Chad Bird. Bird says the anchors may realize additional cost savings if other uses for the network come into play, such as creating phone systems, Intranet options and networks with the other co-anchor members that more efficiently use equipment. There’s even the potential of building a “cloud” to replace virtual systems that are redundant and offsite. Another important aspect of the fiber optic network will be emergency and disaster planning and operations. “The plug-and-play possibilities of a shared cloud environment will allow each organization to continue business in case of emergency,” said Bird. Decorah will save on infrastructure costs as well. To build the infrastructure for the network, the city is receiving more than $500,000 from a Broadband Technologies Opportunities Program (BTOP) grant, portioned from federal stimulus

funds through the National Telecommunications & Information Administration (NTIA). The six anchors will be splitting the remaining cost of $222,801, plus engineering fees. Voltmer Inc., of Decorah, was awarded the bid for the project, which calls for 144 strands circling the city, including across College Drive Bridge and along Heivly Street. Bird won’t make any promises but notes that “the Metronet could potentially be rolled out to the community. This would certainly help with corporate recruitment and growth, provide more jobs — possibly higher-paying jobs — and increase our tax base, which helps lower taxes.”
Green Initiatives Lead to More Green for Business Environmental consciousness has been around for a long time in the Decorah area, where wind energy, hybrid vehicle fleets and geothermal energy are already part of the green picture. The creation of the Winneshiek Energy District, the first of its kind in the United States, leads a collaborative effort that’s working together to increase energy efficiency, ensure responsible land use and storm-water
retention, and preserve historic treasures throughout the county. Going green can save not just precious natural resources, but business “green” as well, offering a measurable impact on the bottom line. The Energy District promotes financial incentives available to residents and businesses through the state and local utilities pursuing energy efficiency. Visit www.energydistrict.org for more information on the Winneshiek Energy District and its programs and partnerships. Businesses are also encouraged to participate in the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce’s Green Business Council, which works closely with Winneshiek Energy District, the city of Decorah’s Sustainable Decorah initiative, and Luther College Sustainability to develop real opportunities for businesses to reduce their energy usage, eliminate waste and save money. Among their efforts, the council encourages residents to shop locally, helps businesses maintain a healthy workforce, and maintains a vibrant, appealing, green environment.
Outstanding Educational Support Iowa is consistently touted as one of the best states in the nation when it comes to K–12 education, and Decorah’s K–12 public school system consistently outperforms the highest statewide standards. Additionally, Decorah is home to Luther College, one of the finest private liberal arts colleges in the nation, and nearby Northeast Iowa Community College provides customized, on-site jobs training for regional businesses, as well as continuing education courses for individuals. All are working to ensure students are prepared for future needs in the workplace.
Decorah Business Park Located on Highway 9 just across from the Decorah Municipal Airport, the 154-acre Decorah Business Park looks like a landscaped neighborhood, but is primed for business, offering city utilities and service. The park already hosts light manufacturing, retail and office lots, with tenants including Farm Credit Services of America, Midwest Group Benefits, Tri-Tech Software Solutions, Arend’s Moving & Storage, and the USDA. Remaining lots are zoned for highway commercial and light manufacturing, and incentives may be offered for businesses bringing new jobs into Winneshiek County.

Local Business Incentives • Tax Abatement: Both the city of Decorah and Winneshiek County offer tax abatement in select situations to assist a new or expanding business in making improvements to their property. When taxes are abated, the property owner continues to pay taxes on the property at the rate that was in effect before the improvements were made. The increased amount of taxes is abated for a set period of time. • Loan Funds: Funding is offered to new or expanding businesses via the Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) and the Intermediary Relending Program (IRP) offered through Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission in Decorah. These loans are available to businesses for which credit is not otherwise available on terms and conditions that permit completion of proposed business activities.

Education A HEALTHY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Northeast Iowa Food & Fitness Initiative Brings Healthy Habits to the Classroom
T
he Northeast Iowa Food & Fitness Initiative (NEIFFI) has brought resources in Allamakee, Chickasaw, Clayton, Fayette, Howard and Winneshiek counties together to make the region a place where, every day, all people have access to healthy, locally grown foods and abundant opportunities for physical activity not only in the places where they live and play, but also where they learn and work. The W. K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) recently awarded a four-year grant of $900,000 to the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative. The award money will fund current strategies related to school wellness, food systems and active living, with an additional focus on the caregivers of children from birth to age 5 in Northeast Iowa. The WKKF invests in community-driven projects across the country that work to change policies, systems and environments to make the healthy choice the easy choice. Kellogg’s investment in northeast Iowa started in 2007 when the area was selected as one of nine sites to be a Food & Fitness community, with a two-year planning grant of $650,000. A three-year implementation grant of $1.2 million followed. With the additional support, the initiative now moves from the implementation phase to an extended funding phase. Guided by a Regional Leadership Council of local community members, NEIFFI is grounded

and supported by the staff of four core partner organizations: ISU Extension and Outreach, Luther College, Northeast Iowa Community College, and Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission. These organizations, each with differing missions, unite under a common vision for the region — to provide access to healthy, locally grown food with abundant opportunities for physical activity and play every day. “A nine-year investment by a private foundation into a region is unprecedented,” said Ann Mansfield, NEIFFI project coordinator. “It also speaks volumes about the quality of the work and the strong community relationships needed to sustain it. “Healthier people make stronger families and vibrant communities,” Mansfield continued. “The continued support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation will help us to further deepen this work with our partners and communities.” In the educational arena, NEIFFI plans to build on existing strategies by continuing to support area youth as leaders of change in wellness in school and community environments.
will increase the communities’ and schools’ wellness: building a local food system; engaging communities in active transportation to school and work as a way to increase physical activity; and changing local schools’ policies and practices regarding wellness. Five years after its successful launch, the initiative has accomplished some notable achievements, including:
Wellness Initiatives in Area Schools Because schools are hubs in a community, FFI has focused on school wellness for the past three years. They have worked to engage each school district within the six counties to create practices that benefit the well-being of students and create a culture that promotes and sustains healthy habits. The Northeast Iowa Food & Fitness Initiative is pursuing three strategies to drive change that
School districts are now turning those healthy practices into policy. Activities with proven outcomes for students, like walking school bus programs, recess before lunch when possible, stronger food and beverage policies, active classrooms, and strong farm-to-school programs, are paving the road for long-term system change. “Our schools are working hard to set the standard of excellence, where the healthy choice becomes the easy choice. This takes
Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce
• More than 2,000 students now walk and bike to and from school, an increase of nearly 50 percent in the six counties. • An increase in locally sourced food, which is now served in 17 of the region’s 20 school districts. • Sixteen school districts with school gardens, producing more than 4,000 pounds of produce used in school meal programs. • Annual continuing education classes in wellness training for K-12 teachers. • Creation of active wellness teams in 90 percent of the region’s school districts, most of which include school administrators, teachers, nurses and school food service staff, in addition to local youth and parents.
a lot of education and a lot of reworking,” said Emily Neal, director of school outreach at Luther College. As an example of a local school initiative for health, Neal cites North Winneshiek School, which has presented students with tools to increase their daily physical activity. “Students in some classrooms use stability balls instead of chairs and monitor their movement throughout the day with a classroom set of activity monitors.” In addition to ensuring that their students are up and moving, North Winneshiek staff wear Fitbits (pedometers) to ensure that they too are active throughout the day. A healthy diet is a focus too. “North Winn’s approach to wellness extends beyond fitness, as students have the opportunity to plant and eat vegetables from their school garden and participate in nutrition and cooking classes to better understand how to make healthier food choices on their own,” Neal said. “North Winneshiek’s Youth Food and Fitness team has supported this effort by making sandwiches to be served on the BOLT (after-school snack) cart and by organizing a local cheese curd fundraiser to support their annual middle school skip trip.” An early start to teaching healthy habits is a feature at Decorah Community School District as well. Neal notes that Decorah’s focus on schoolwide wellness is growing, and students’ opportunities for integrated instruction and wellness activities are becoming more regular. “First grade students participate in weekly hands-on nutrition lessons and classroom taste tests, while second grade students learn the value of food from their high school peers during active cross-age teaching lessons,” she
explained. “Through both of these opportunities elementary students are becoming more adventurous eaters and learning to love their fruits and vegetables.” In addition to food education, teachers and staff are working toward creating more active classrooms by integrating movement into lessons and using active brain breaks on a more regular basis. Staff members, however, are not the only individuals who have taken a leadership role in creating healthier school environments. “Members of the High School Youth Food and Fitness team meet on a regular basis, host the Decorah Community meal, work with athletic boosters to offer healthier options at sporting events, and reach out to their peers for a day of cooking and food education,” Neal said.

EDIBLE LANDSCAPE AT WINNESHIEK MEDICAL CENTER: THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE
W
hether it’s crunchy kale chips or Swiss chard drizzled with various flavors of vinegar, patients, staff and visitors are treated to an assortment of produce never before seen at Winneshiek Medical Center. The edible landscaping project on the WMC campus provides fresh, organically grown produce, while experimenting with techniques such as crop rotation and unique production methods. Expert gardener David Cavagnaro and his team from the Pepperfield Project plant, tend and harvest the mixture of vegetables and perennials, while Winneshiek Medical Center Nutrition Services staff process and serve the food. Joetta Redlin, the director of Nutrition Services, says, “Staff are pleased to provide such nutritional food for our patients and visitors and enjoy the creativity fresh produce allows them. Processing the vegetables takes extra time every day; however, the benefits outweigh the additional responsibilities, and we are glad to be part of this exciting project.” The edible landscape stretches beyond the traditional vegetable garden in that it combines beauty with functionality. Instead of an efficient row of green beans, WMC’s garden boasts willow branch tepees for the plants to climb. Color, in the form of Swiss chard, purple basil and colorful kale, decorates the space, and flowering perennials can be found throughout. Redlin says, “The various heights, colors and planting designs create a space that invites patients, staff and visitors to linger in the garden. It is functional, beautiful and a space that truly promotes the healing power of nature.”

Great Locale for Locavores T BY AMANDA KNOLES
COMMITTED TO YOUR HEALTH
here’s a new movement afoot for those focused on good health, both their own and Mother Nature’s. “Locavores” are those who make a deliberate choice to purchase and eat locally produced vegetables, fruits, dairy and meats, enjoying the freshest and most healthful selections while also reducing their environmental footprint through reduced need for food transportation. Luckily for Decorah area residents, local growers, retailers and many of our finest restaurants are committed to the locavore movement, too. So whether you’re eating out or eating in, you can always eat fresh in Decorah.
Oneota Community Food Co-op www.oneotacoop.com
Started in 1972 by a small group of people who had been making trips to Iowa City and Minneapolis to purchase foods in bulk, the Oneota Community Food Co-op evolved from the Oneota Food Buying Club and moved to its first storefront in 1974. Over the last four decades, the co-op has gone through a number of expansions to become a fully stocked grocery with more than 3,900 member-owners. Collaborations with many regional individuals and organizations, including local producers, ISU Extension, Luther College, NE Iowa Food and Farm Coalition, NE Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative, the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Winneshiek Farmer’s Market, have helped the co-op further its mission to provide access to locally grown food and sustainably produced products. During its early years the co-op occupied several locations in Decorah before finally moving to its current address at 312 W. Water Street in 2008. The spacious storefront, previously occupied by Fareway Grocery Store, provided the expanding enterprise with enough room for its large selection of bulk foods as well as a wide variety of organic produce, nutritional supplements, packaged and frozen foods, and body care items. The larger space also allowed the co-op to open Water Street Café and an expanded wine and beer section that features local, regional and globally made vintages and brews. Featuring breakfast sandwiches, fresh salads and soups made from local and organic ingredients, the Water Street Café also offers a hot bar buffet with a different themed menu daily and fresh-grilled sandwiches made to order. The popular espresso bar serves up locally roasted, fair trade, organic espresso coffee; organic milks; and Italian sodas.
Seed Savers Exchange www.seedsavers.org
Located six miles north of Decorah, Heritage Farm holds the largest nongovernmental seed bank of its kind in North America and is headquarters to Seed Savers Exchange, a nonprofit, member-supported organization. Founded in 1975 by Diane Ott Whealy and Kent Whealy, the mission of the exchange is to conserve and promote America’s culturally diverse and endangered food crop heritage for future generations by collecting, growing and sharing heirloom seeds and plants. Members of Seed Savers Exchange have distributed thousands of seeds, many brought to North America by members’ ancestors who emigrated from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and other regions. Working with farmers and gardeners, Seed Savers Exchange strives to prevent unique varieties from being lost. Backyard preservationists also exchange thousands of seeds each year through the Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook.

Spanning 890 acres and home to more than 25,000 endangered vegetable varieties, Heritage Farm is visited each year by thousands of people from all over the world. Martha Stewart filmed an episode of her show at the farm, and President Obama took a tour during a visit to the Midwest in 2011. The farm boasts more than 6,000 varieties of tomatoes and 2,000 varieties of peppers, as well as thousands of other vegetable varieties. Visitors to the farm enjoy exploring the gardens, viewing the Ancient White Park cattle, hiking eight miles of trails and wandering through the historic orchard, where hundreds of heritage apple and grape varieties are grown. The Lillian Goldman Visitor Center features exhibits and educational materials about the exchange, and visitors may purchase a wide selection of heirloom seeds, horticultural books, garden gifts and local food and art. Visit the website for information on a wide variety of events that take place on the farm.
In business since 1899, they are known for their exceptional quality flour and grain products. Waving Grains’ most popular bread varieties are European Sourdough, Many Seeded and Five Grain. “These are all the long rise, two-day-in-themaking breads where the flavor comes from the flour itself rather than the sweeteners or oil in typical bread,” Iverson noted. Waving Grains also offers quick breads like orange cranberry and pumpkin walnut, as well as muffins, scones, cookies, fudgy oat bars, chocolate brownies and specialty items like rugelach. Other popular sellers are fresh sourdough pizza dough that can be baked at home and cinnamon rolls with real maple syrup icing. Currently baking five days a week, Iverson says future expansion plans might include a retail bakery, but for now she and her staff stay busy supplying the demand for breads and desserts at Oneota Co-op.

Decorah’s Waving Grains is a wholesale bakery that has built a huge following through its breads and other bakery items, which are available at the Oneota Community Food Co-op or as special order by calling the bakery. The business started as a group of friends baking bread and doing everything by hand. “We began around 1991 as a home-based business and then graduated to a commercial kitchen,” explained owner Jo Berg Iverson. “We get most of our organic ingredients from the co-op, and our sales have expanded right along with theirs.” Specializing in healthy, made-from-scratch breads and desserts, the bakery’s products are approximately 75 percent organic, and Iverson uses local suppliers for eggs, honey and inseason fruits like raspberries. The organic flours come from Bay State Milling in Winona, Minn.
This family-owned winery situated in the scenic rolling hills north of Decorah specializes in fruit and table wines. Owned and operated by Ken and Yvonne Barnes and their daughters Darla Jones and Beth Guzman, the farm has been in Yvonne’s family for over 140 years. Before opening the winery Ken and Yvonne raised a variety of livestock, including beef and dairy cows and farrowed pigs. In 2001 Ken began planting grapes and exploring the possibility of opening a winery, and with the help of an Amish construction crew the dairy barn was transformed into a winery that began operating in October 2005. Today the winery is a member of the Iowa Wine Trail and includes eight scenic acres of vineyards. The spacious tasting room features hardwood floors, rustic chandeliers and an elegant, handcrafted oak bar for tastings. Visitors also enjoy sunset views from the beautiful patio and a gift shop that features handmade creations from artisans in the tri-state area. The party room is the perfect setting for wedding rehearsal dinners, bridal showers, receptions and other special occasions. Specializing in fruit and table wines, the winery offers a selection of 25 wines, including several with colorful names that are explained on the winery tour. Cranberry Crush won a Best of Class Award at the Mid-America Wine Competition. Wine tastings and guided tours are offered, with a lunch menu available during business hours. The winery also hosts brunches, wine and food pairings, an annual chili cook-off, and other special events. www.decorahareachamber.com

Recreation OUR GREAT OUTDOORS
Decorah’s Favorite Playground — Trout Run Trail visitdecorah.com/troutruntrail
Trout Run Trail is an 11-mile loop that offers scenic views of historic Decorah and the surrounding area as it winds past dikes, abandoned rail beds and farmland. Entirely paved and handicapped-accessible throughout, the trail has become the pride of the community, as it ties together stunning natural beauty, public art, community access routes and enhanced entry to outdoor recreation. Featuring stunning views of the Oneota Valley and Upper Iowa River, the trail provides ample opportunities for walking, hiking, running and cross-country skiing, as well as non-motorized access to trout streams, parks, campgrounds, and local restaurants and businesses. Several handicapped-accessible fishing points are located along the trail. It’s a biker’s dream come true, with trails winding past gorgeous sections of countryside, and it’s one of the reasons Decorah was included in Men’s Journal magazine’s “52 Great American Weekends” feature. One of the more popular stops on Trout Run Trail is the Decorah Fish Hatchery. Boasting Siewers Springs, the second-largest natural spring in Iowa, it’s a great spot for a picnic, fishing or bird watching. A popular attraction on the trail for locals and visitors has been the Decorah Eagles Nest. The 6-foot-wide nest, weighing more than 750 pounds, has been home to an
18
eagle family that gained stardom in 2012 via streaming footage provided by “Eaglecam.” While the eagles have moved house, they’re still resident in Decorah (see page 21). Other access points for Trout Run Trail include Will Baker Park, the 5th Avenue Bridge, Wold Park and Trout Run Park. The last segment of the trail runs from Middle Calmar Road down old Highway 52 and back to the Trout Run Trail Bridge over Highway 9. The Trout Run Trail Bridge won second place honors in the transportation category at the 2013 American Council of Engineering Companies’ Iowa Excellence Awards competition and has become an important focal point for the community. The bridge, featuring a 125-foot center span over State Highway 9, was cited as an excellent example of structural aesthetics, integration with the environment and trail infrastructure enhancement. In addition to outstanding views of nature, the Trout Run Trail features beautiful art sculptures located along the trail on Dug Road, just south of Highway 9, and at the Trout Hatchery. The Vision Iowa Board awarded a grant to Winneshiek County so the public could enjoy art placed along the trail. Doug Freeman, a Minneapolis-based artist, is known for his unique sculptures that stimulate visitors to interact with his works. His sculpture provides a place where visitors can leave poems or messages for other people to read, and it is situated at a scenic viewpoint overlooking the Upper Iowa River.

Bounnak Thammavong, an Iowa City artist and avid trout fisherman, created the large metal archway that crosses Trout Run Trail south of Highway 9. Dean Schwarz, a Decorah artist and former art professor at Luther College, crafted a ceramic tile mosaic. The 7-foot-long, 2-foot-wide and 2-foot-high mosaic is located by the trail at the Decorah Fish Hatchery. Originally conceived as a way to provide increased recreational opportunities for local residents, Trout Run Trail has also boosted tourism by attracting more people to area restaurants, hotels and shops. Completion of the trail project has been the result of an impressive communitywide effort that included many local, regional and state organizations working as a team. Trails of Winneshiek County (TOW), a group of local citizens, initiated the trail project in 2000 and contributed thousands of volunteer hours to help develop it. Construction was financed with local donations and state grants, with additional funding from DOT Enhancement, Iowa Great Places, Vision Iowa, REAP and State Trails Grants. In addition to Trout Run Trail’s recreational appeal are its health and environmental benefits. The trail system encourages residents to get outside, get more exercise and enjoy nature. At the same time it helps reduce traffic, offering easy walking or biking access to a number of destinations around town, including shops, restaurants, and other businesses. Prairie Farmer Recreational Trail www.visitdecorah.com/prairie-farmer-trail.html
Beginning at Calmar and stretching northwest through Ridgeway in Winneshiek County, the asphalt-surfaced Prairie Farmer Recreational Trail extends all the way to the city of Cresco, Iowa, in eastern Howard County. The 20-mile trail, which was once a rail line for the Milwaukee Railroad, offers beautiful natural surroundings as well as the convenience of picnic shelters, rest areas, restrooms and water via the three cities’ parks systems. The trail is open year-round for hiking, biking, walking, skating and cross-country skiing, and outdoor enthusiasts will find the campgrounds at Lake Meyer Park — just three miles from the Calmar trail head — make a great stay-over spot for the adventure.
Decorah Parks & Recreation: Not Just Benches and Basketball The city of Decorah maintains over 500 acres of parks and provides recreational programs that make outdoor fun and staying fit a way of life in Winneshiek County. The rugged natural beauty of northeast Iowa is right outside Decorah’s front door. Dunning’s Spring Park, Van Peenan Memorial Park, Palisades Park and the Decorah Ice Cave State Preserve combine to provide over 300 acres of explorable natural terrain. These areas include an outstanding 17-mile system of single-track mountain bike trails that are home to competitive biking events and provide excellent hiking and cross-county skiing opportunities. On the west side of town, the city’s premier campground offers nearly 170 gravel, grass and pullthrough camping sites with amenities such as electrical hookups, ice and wood sales, bathhouse facilities, playground equipment, and a trout stream for fishing or canoe access. The campground is adjacent to Twin Springs State Park — a popular fishing and hiking destination — and is linked to other Decorah recreational hot spots via the Trout Run Trail. The Parks & Recreation Department maintains after-school programs and sports clinics for small children, and they provide intramural volleyball and basketball leagues for high school students. Adult leagues include softball, volleyball and three-on-three basketball. The parks also host a variety of special events such as movie nights, parties and holiday gatherings. With beautiful butterfly gardens, a scenic waterfall and other natural wonders, Decorah’s parks are popular for weddings and other special occasions. www.decorahareachamber.com

Winneshiek County Adventures Winneshiek County is an outdoor lover’s paradise. Home to several river systems, including the Turkey River, Yellow River and Upper Iowa River and its tributaries, the region is a premier spot for fishing and hunting as well as water sports. The winding 30-mile stretch of the Upper Iowa from Kendallville to Decorah combines stunning scenery with class-one rapids and quiet pools, making it a sought-after destination for river fun. National Geographic Adventure ranked canoeing, tubing and kayaking the Upper Iowa River as one of the “Top 100 Adventures in the United States.” Several experienced outfitters offer guided tours and advice on which routes best suit various experience levels. Easy-to-access launch points, ample parking and well-marked routes make traversing the rivers easier for those on their own. North and South Bear creeks offer some of the best trout fishing in the state. The Upper Iowa is a favorite spot for fishermen angling for walleye and small-mouth bass, while the streams of Winneshiek County attract fly fishermen. The Decorah Fish Hatchery stocks up to 17 streams over a fourcounty area, providing fishing enthusiasts with ample opportunities for catching rainbow, brown and brook trout. Spanning 33 acres, man-made Lake Meyer, 15 miles south of Decorah, is another

popular fishing spot. Sportsmen enjoy exploring the Coon Creek, Cardinal Marsh and Bear Creek areas, and spots along the Upper Iowa River basin are popular for hunting deer, wild turkeys, pheasants and rabbits. Waterfowl hunting is at its peak during the annual duck and goose migration. Winneshiek County offers an abundance of hiking and mountain biking trails that are also popular with bird watchers, photographers and nature lovers. With stunning scenery like 200-foot towering bluffs and majestic eagles flying overhead, the views are unmatched. Winter in northeast Iowa provides great opportunities for snowmobiling, skiing, skating and ice fishing. Skiers enjoy double-track and skating trails, and snowshoers have hundreds of miles of ungroomed areas to explore. The Parks and Recreation Department maintains a phone line with the latest information on weather and trail conditions (563-382-4158.) Additional information and printable maps are available at visitdecorah.com/trails. Signage along the trails makes navigating trails easier, with helpful directions for hotels, restaurants and gas stations. Local trail clubs work hard to maintain the trail systems and offer organized rides, events and shows throughout the year.
A Change of Address
A
fter more than six years of being the world’s most closely watched birds, the Decorah eagles are proving that they can still surprise us. When Raptor Resource Project (RRP) first became involved in filming a nesting pair of Decorah-based bald eagles for the PBS documentary The American Eagle, no one could have predicted the level of stardom the birds would ultimately attain. Filming began at ground level in 2007, and RRP began mounting cameras in the tree in 2008. The following year, with the documentary completed, RRP director Bob Anderson decided to make streaming footage from the nest cameras available online, and by 2012 the Decorah Eaglecam was a global Internet phenomenon with approximately 275 million viewers worldwide. Then, in the fall of 2012, the eagles did something that left ever yone in suspense for several
BY JAY NEHRKORN
months — they built a second nest in Decorah. The question as to which nest would house their 2013 eaglets was finally answered in February when they settled in the new location. Anderson said that while the move precludes streaming webcasts of the eagles in 2013, this sort of behavior is actually extremely common in bald eagles and it doesn’t spell the end of the world’s love affair with Decorah’s most famous residents. “Eagles are perpetual nest builders, with some pairs having up to four or five nests, and it was fortunate that we were able to get seven years of filming before they built an alternative nest,” he explained. “I’m hoping that if we can get permission from the new landowners, we will have cameras at both nests so that it won’t matter which one they go to in 2014.” The most pressing matter is to ensure that the eagles’ new home is not disturbed, as it is located very near Decorah’s new bike trail. Then, if permission is granted, cameras for the new nest will be installed in the fall of 2013. In the meantime, perennial viewers of the Decorah Eaglecam shouldn’t worry about suffering from empty nest syndrome, as RRP plans to provide photos from ground level and updates on the Decorah eagles and still offers a variety of other nest cams on their website. Viewers and educators can also watch red-tailed hawks, barn owls, Canada geese and many other birds at EagleCrest, where they have 24-hour viewing on 12 cameras. A great deal has been learned from the Decorah eagles over the past six years, and they
continue to teach. A transmitter attached to one of the eagle chicks in 2011 has allowed tracking of the bird’s movements, including its trip to northern Minnesota that same year and a 2012 journey to Hudson’s Bay, where it spent three months at Polar Bear Provincial Park before finally returning to Iowa in November. “What we’ve learned about an Iowa eagle is incredible,” Anderson said. “Who would have guessed that an Iowa-fledged eagle would travel up to the Arctic?” Anderson said another of their most interesting discoveries about bald eagles came as the result of using infrared cameras at the original Decorah nest. “We’ve found that the eagles can be nocturnal; that they do come and go from the nest in the middle of the night. They sometimes even defend the nest in the middle of the night. Our infrared cameras in this nest, and ones that we have in a Colorado nest, have shown us that raccoons are constantly trying to rob them of their eggs and babies. That was quite an eye opener for us.” Along with getting the Decorah eagles back online, new projects for RRP include a potential Internet camera featuring an endangered eagle in the Philippines and a cooperative project with a group furthering the amazing chimney swift research pioneered by ornithologist Althea Sherman more than a century ago. Look for more updates on all these projects at www.raptorresource.org.

Hotel Winneshiek Combines Contemporary Comfort With Historic Charm www.hotelwinn.com
Situated in the heart of downtown Decorah, the Hotel Winneshiek is a landmark property that offers guests a blend of refined elegance and modern amenities. Just steps away from shopping, recreation and entertainment, the 31-room boutique hotel is an ideal location for both tourists and business travelers. Tastefully decorated rooms and suites pamper guests with contemporary comforts while charming public areas reflect the hotel’s fascinating past. Built in 1904 on a site that has been home to lodging establishments since 1855, the luxury Beaux Arts building opened in 1905 and treated guests to all the current amenities, including a cigar counter, billiard room and barbershop, welcoming such stellar guests as Norway’s Crown Prince and Princess in the 1930s. Beautifully restored in 2000, the Hotel Winneshiek features original marble walls, terrazzo floors and an octagonal, three-story lobby adorned with a colorful 14-by-14-foot stained glass skylight. Today it’s recognized as a premier luxury lodging destination in the Midwest and continues the tradition of welcoming

international dignitaries, including President Obama, who was a guest during his tour through the Midwest in August 2011. The hotel staff worked closely with White House personnel and the Secret Service to handle all the preparations. “Everyone on our staff worked long and hard to make the official stay function as smoothly as possible. I believe we succeeded in that,” said hotel manager Terri Mozzone. “We’d happily do it again despite the long hours.” Guests will also enjoy fine dining, as the award-winning Albert’s has become a notable destination in its own right, earning acclaim from local foodies, tourists and restaurant reviewers. Serving up a tantalizing menu that includes favorites like BBQ ribs, grilled walleye and mushroom fettuccine, Executive Chef Tom Skold also creates seasonal, unique dishes. “Tom continues to update our menus seasonally and has adapted his recipes to incorporate the rich variety of foods offered by many local producers, including local/regional meats and cheeses, produce, syrups, and other items,” noted Mozzone. The Steyer Opera House, adjoining the hotel, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The landmark venue has been lovingly restored to its former grandeur and hosts a

variety of concerts, theatre performances, weddings, receptions and lectures. “Hotel Winneshiek was chosen last April as the location for a statewide Historic Preservation Conference, since the hotel and opera house structures represent prime examples of how one person’s vision can improve an entire community through preservation,” Mozzone said. “We consider the Steyer Opera House our ‘crown jewel’ and have continued to expand usage and availability for a variety of community events. We have partnered with the hugely successful Water Street Music Festival Series, Decorah Betterment, ArtHaus, Vesterheim, KPLV radio and others to provide access for community functions.”

Octagon House Octagon House is one of only 400 octagonstyle homes still standing in the United States today. According to historians the unusual architectural style was used for over 1,000 structures built in the United States and Canada between 1848 and 1920. Built by Robert Logan in 1856, the Decorah landmark was once adorned with a cupola and featured prominently on a map dated 1870.

Porter House www.porterhousemuseum.org
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Porter House, at 404 W. Broadway, is an Italianate villa that has been a museum in Decorah for over 40 years. The home was built in 1867 by Dighton B. Ellsworth and sold to Francis and Emma Young in 1898, who lived in the home with their daughter Grace until their deaths. Grace and her husband Bert Porter filled the villa with artwork and other treasures acquired during their extensive travels. Today the museum is a blend of elegant Victorian furnishings and the fascinating collections and artwork of the Porters. Impressive natural history specimens include a display of exotic butterflies. An unusual Rock Wall surrounding the home was built during the early 1940s over a period of six years. Designed according to Porter’s precise instructions, it is adorned with agates, onyx, rose quartz, petrified wood and other rocks, gemstones and fossils he collected during his travels as a naturalist. Operating as a nonprofit organization, the museum is supported by generous donations from members, donors, visitors and volunteers.

Restored as a museum and open for tours, the 11-room hotel features authentic Ingalls Wilder items as well as a kitchen, pantry, parlor room, bedrooms and other rooms decorated with historic furnishings, accessories, tools and clothing of the time period. The gift shop at the Visitors Center carries a large selection of books by Ingalls Wilder and other authors, plus clothing, jewelry, toys, dolls, souvenirs and more. Other attractions include an adjacent playground and picnic shelter and the 1909 bank building. The annual Laura Days celebration, held the fourth weekend in June, features stagecoach rides, a parade, pioneer demonstrations, children’s games and live entertainment. The museum is open daily from April–October.

Located in Spillville, 13 miles southwest of Decorah, the museum features unique handcarved clocks from brothers Frank and Joseph Bily. Depicting history, art, religion and culture, the decorative clocks (some as large as 9 feet tall) are covered with hundreds of intricately carved figures. The museum also houses an exhibit honoring famous Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, who occupied the second floor with his family during the summer of 1893.
The Northeast Iowa Artists’ Studio Tour is Iowa’s largest and longest-running tour of artist studios. Last year’s October event included 53 artists at 43 locations. Visitors who participate in the tour are treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the artist process, including glimpses of works in progress and hands-on demonstrations from many of the region’s best-known artisans.

Ancient “Shooting Star” Draws New Attention to Decorah BY JAY NEHRKORN
Scientists looking at the underground structure of northeast Iowa have made an amazing discovery about an event that once happened in the skies above Decorah. Something fell — and that something was big. Recent airborne geophysical surveys, a collaboration of the U.S. Geological Survey with the Iowa and Minnesota Geological Surveys, have confirmed suspicions of geologists on the ground: The natural beauty of Decorah’s topography sits above a massive meteorite crater. The Decorah Impact Structure, as it is now known, was first hypothesized in 2008 and 2009 by geologists from the Iowa Geological and Water Survey, which operates under the auspices of the Iowa DNR. Water well drill-cuttings from beneath and near Decorah exhibited a unique pattern of shale deposition which, according to Iowa Geological Survey geologist Robert McKay, revealed a “nice circular basin” of about 5.5-kilometer width. As reported in an article by environment and outdoors writer Orlan Love for the Cedar Rapids-based newspaper The Gazette, McKay credits a Decorah-based independent geologist named Jean Young, who died in 2007, with identifying the unique deposits. “She called to my attention in 2000 an unusual cluster of well boring samples containing thick layers of shale, all from a confined CREDIT: U.S. Geological Survey-image created by Adam Kiel, Northeast Iowa RC&D area in and immediately around Decorah,” McKay said. The combination of shale deposits and the subsequent discovery of shocked quartz by Bevan French, a scientist at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, made the idea of an ancient meteorite impact at Decorah a near certainty. The addition of the aerial geophysical survey data, which includes electromagnetic and rock density information, sealed the deal and initiated modeling efforts to quantify the meteorite’s impact. “These data, when coupled with physical property measurements on drill core samples, will form the basis for modeling efforts to constrain the impact geometry and energy of the meteorite,” said USGS geophysicist Dr. Andy Kass in a March 2013 press release. Indications are that the more than 3-mile-wide basin reaches a depth of several hundred meters.

Passenger trains ran on this line unti the 1960s. Today, Calmar is still a crossroads for northeast Iowa, as it’s located at the point where highways 150, 24 and 52 converge.

The fort was built to keep the Winnebago Indians on Neutral Ground, a 40-mile-wide strip of land established by the Treaty of 1830, parts of which still remain today. The Fort Preserve hosts annual Rendezvous Days, a re-enactment of life in the 1840s. The city of Fort Atkinson maintains an active government of its own.
