rants, originally founded as a railroad town, has a rich history of agriculture, logging, and mining. Centered in an area rich with uranium, coal, potash, and fluorspar, Grants has also been the world’s largest uranium producer and was once known as the “Uranium Capital of the World.” While mining has experienced some reverses in recent years, a renewed interest in alternative energy is bringing uranium mining back to New Mexico and to Grants. Multiple mining companies have been actively exploring the Grants Mineral Belt and have notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission of intentions to apply for uranium mining licenses in the region. The New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division reports that permitting is under way to open at least two uranium mines here. Industry leaders have cited several factors contributing to Grants being an outstanding locale for uranium extraction, including: • The high grade of historical production • Mineralization at or near surface • Favorable mineralogy • Excellent existing access and infrastructure • Strong community support Peabody Energy’s Lee Ranch and El Segundo coal mines are located near Grants, extracting from a 170 million ton coal reserve in the San Juan Basin. Lee Ranch, which shipped 5.8 million tons of coal in 2007, has been honored as the safest surface mine in the United States by the U.S. Department of Labor, and thousands of acres of reclaimed mine land have been made available for cattle grazing. El Segundo, which opened in 2008, is expected to generate $1 billion in revenue over its 19-year agreement. Together the mines employ nearly 265 workers and will annually inject more than $85 million in direct economic impact into the region.

Tourism Increasingly, Cibola County residents have turned to promoting resources that will never be exhausted: the region’s magnificent beauty and culture. Combined, retail, entertainment, and hospitality services dominate the Cibola County economy, and it’s no wonder. Grants is within two hours of Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano , El Malpais National Monument, Mount Taylor, Zuni Pueblo, El Morro National Monument, Acoma Pueblo, Laguna Pueblo, Bluewater, and Chaco Culture. Cibola National Forest is just a 10-minute drive away, while less than a day’s drive will take you to Canyon de Chelly,
Meteor Crater, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest National Park, or the Grand Canyon. Such beauty and majesty is bound to attract thousands of tourists annually, and Grants and Cibola County have risen to the challenge of hosting them. Grants’ Northwest New Mexico Visitor Center welcomes travelers with information and hospitality. More than 1,000 hotel rooms are available in Grants, as are RV parks and bed and breakfasts. Entertainment options are myriad as well and include shopping, casinos, golf, museums, a winery, and more.

Explore Historic Route 66 Perhaps no other stretch of road is as famous as the original Route 66 — the Mother Road — and travelers will enjoy the nostalgia of following its path through Cibola County, which is home to the longest unbroken stretch of Route 66 in New Mexico. Along the way, you’ll see many of the same sights, signs, and businesses that the travelers of yesteryear saw during the highway’s days of glory. The journey will take you to pueblos and lava flows as you cross the Continental Divide. At the Double Six Gallery and Art & Artifacts Museum, visitors can view exquisite works by nearly 70 of the region’s multicultural artists and purchase interesting pieces that will remind them of their Cibola County experience. The museum is dedicated to regional, historical exhibits.
Experience Native American Culture Cibola County also offers the opportunity to experience Native American culture through the area’s pueblos and historical sites. Visitors are encouraged to call in advance to understand the etiquette and physical demands of the places they wish to visit. East of Grants is the Laguna Pueblo, an area which has been inhabited by Native Americans for hundreds of years. The pueblo is host to the feast of St. Joseph each year on September 19, which includes a Mass, dances, and booths selling arts and crafts. You can reach the pueblo at 505-552-6654. Also nearby is the Acoma Pueblo, the oldest continuously inhabited community in all of North America. The Sky City Cultural Center and Haak’u Museum shouldn’t be missed, and visitors are encouraged to enjoy
guided tours of both Sky City and the 17thcentury San Estevan del Rey Mission. Stop by the Yaak’a Café for a traditional meal, then shop the Gaits’i Indian Art Gallery for authentic Native American art and gifts. There are numerous events and celebration feasts that guests may attend each year at the pueblo, as well as seasonal hunting opportunities. See www.skycity.com or call 800-747-0181. Just 73 miles south of Grants, the Zuni Pueblo is the largest of New Mexico’s 19 pueblos. Zuni artisans are famous worldwide, and their beautiful carvings, needlepoint works, and inlay jewelry are prized by collectors. The pueblo also features Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission, built in 1629, as well as a museum and heritage center. The 450,000-acre pueblo offers hunting for a variety of species via an application process. Call 505-782-7238 for more information. Chaco Culture National Historical Park, 90 miles northwest of Grants, is one of our nation’s foremost cultural and historical areas. Between A.D. 850 and 1250, Chaco Canyon was the center of trade, ceremony, and administration for the Puebloan culture. The distinctive architecture of the ancient structures continues to inspire thousands of
years later. The park features a visitor’s center, seasonal astronomy programs, and access to sites via paved roads, bicycle trails, and hiking trails. The sites are continually used today by the Puebloans and other Native Americans for rituals and ceremonies. Native Americans may enter free.
Glimpses of History The mining industry plays an important role in the history of Grants, and the New Mexico Mining Museum at 100 North Iron Avenue gives visitors the chance to learn what uranium mining was like in days past. Along with self-guided tours of a re-created underground mine, the museum gallery displays the history of Cibola County industry, including railroads, logging, and ranching. There are exhibits of gems and minerals from all over the world, as well as an excellent collection of New Mexico artifacts dating as far back as the 8th century. For a pleasant afternoon drive, stop by the Grants/Cibola County Chamber of Commerce and pick up a map for the self-guided Zuni Mountain Railroad Tour. The tour will give you insight into the colorful history of the railroad, which ran from 1892 to 1942 and was

Cibola County is home to some of the Southwest’s most breathtaking scenery, and the area’s public lands make that beauty accessible to everyone. At 11,301 feet, majestic Mount Taylor is the highest peak in northwestern New Mexico and a sacred place to the Navajo Nation. The spectacular views that the mountain offers include ancient lava flows from prehistoric volcanic activity. Outdoor recreational opportunities at Mount Taylor include picnicking or camping at the area’s nicely equipped campgrounds, as well as hiking trails that often include sightings of the area’s wildlife. Athletes from far and near test their mettle at the annual Mt. Taylor Winter Quadrathlon, which combines biking, running, skiing, and snowshoe trekking over a 42-mile course to the top and back. Take Highway 53 south of Grants to discover a treasure in the El Malpais National Monument. Known for its great hiking and caving, the monument is home to some of the longest lava tubes in the continental United States and preserves 114,277 acres of land rich with lava flows, cinder cones, pressure ridges, sandstone bluffs, and mesas. There are historical and archaeological sites to view, providing information about the Native Americans that lived there long ago. Surrounding the monument is the El Malpais National Conservation Area, established to protect approximately 263,000 acres of geological and archaeological wonders. The conservation area is home to stunning natural beauty, such as La Ventana, one of New Mexico’s largest and most beautiful natural arches. Outdoorsmen will enjoy the opportunity to connect with this beautiful land through viewing the area’s 300 species of

birds or hunting for game such as elk, turkey, and others. One of nature’s most interesting examples of irony can be found just south of Grants at the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano. Situated on the Continental Divide, the “Land of Fire and Ice” is a beautiful area of old-growth trees atop an ancient lava trail. Bandera is the largest volcano in the region, and its intricate lave tube complex is fascinating to explore. The Ancient Lava Trail takes explorers down to the Ice Cave, which was formed by the partially collapsed remains of a lava tube. The temperature of the cave never rises above 31 degrees, even in the heat of a high desert, and the rugged beauty of the cave’s icy interior makes it a unique destination. Tickets and memorabilia are available at the trading post, which also has ancient artifacts from the site on display. Another wonder to behold is the El Morro National Monument, located on Highway 53 southwest of Grants. The monument’s massive sandstone bluff rises over 200 feet above the valley floor and features ancient petroglyphs inscribed by Puebloans who lived there centuries ago, as well as inscriptions from travelers dating back to the 1600s. The monument has a visitor center and a museum showcasing 700 years of human history. Self-guided trails include the paved Inscription Trail, which takes hikers past petroglyphs and signatures, and the rugged, two-mile Headlands Trail, which leads to the Anasazi Ruins above.
Exciting Play Golf lovers will be pleased to discover the Coyote del Malpais Championship Golf Course in Grants. The 18-hole course features over 7,000 feet of wide-open driving as well as 16 lakes that add beauty and challenge to the course. They have a fully stocked pro shop, a putting green, and a practice range, and instruction is available for those just getting started. Call 505-2855544 for tee-time reservations.
For water sports enthusiasts, Bluewater Lake State Park offers the perfect place to fish, boat, water ski, or swim. Located just 28 miles west of Grants, this beautiful 1,200-acre lake features excellent fishing for catfish and three varieties of trout; ice fishing is popular in the winter months. The park has many well-developed campsites and over 65 species of birds for
bird-watchers, and there are many fossils to be found around the lake. Visitors looking for games of chance will enjoy the area’s casinos. The New Dancing Eagle Casino and Travel Center at the Laguna Pueblo (www.dancingeaglecasino. com) and the Sky City Hotel & Casino at Acoma (www.skycitycasino.com) provide gaming, fine dining, and live entertainment.
