elcome to Kirksville, Missouri. This is the Show Me State, and we’d love to show you what we have to offer. I believe we have as much to offer our residents as any larger community. We are home to a community college, one of the top liberal arts universities in the nation, and the founding school of osteopathic medicine. Our excellent school systems allow a child to attend classes from preschool to college and never leave town. We have one of the top 100 health care facilities in the country, and our staff of physician specialists is increasing all the time. For visitors we offer shopping, dining, libraries, museums, performing arts, and several festivals with local charm. Supporting area businesses and promoting our community has been the goal of the Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce for nearly 97 years. Our motto is, “Kirksville — Where People Make What do we offer that other the Difference.” We make a difference by working closely with area institutions, local government, and communities don’t? Chamber Report
The Front Door to the Community
T
he Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce, with almost 400 members, holds a leadership role in advancing the overall business, cultural, educational, and civic welfare of the Kirksville area. This mission is accomplished not only through monetary member support, but also through the cooperation of the Chamber board, staff, and committees. The Chamber plays a critical role in fostering a prosperous economic climate for the Kirksville area. As the first stop for new residents, new students, tourists, prospective businesses, and industry leaders, the Chamber is in a unique position to direct new business to its members’ doors. Supporting the region as a whole, the Chamber has a number of goals: recruiting new businesses; working with local, regional, and state governments to build a better business climate; and coordinating business-enhancing activities and promotions for existing businesses all over town. The Chamber supports various governmental educational opportunities, including the spring and fall candidates’ forums and The Government in Focus (TGIF) Series. Tourism promotion and visitor services are also a large part of the Chamber’s mission. The Chamber produces and distributes calendars of events, Kirksville maps, and area phone books and is proud to be the home of the Visitor Center, which houses the Tourism Office. The Chamber also plans and supports various community events, including the annual Spring Business Expo, Fourth of July Festival, and Christmas in Kirksville. In addition to referrals, the Chamber provides its members with advertising opportunities, special networking events, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, Web links, and more. A monthly newsletter keeps members informed of Chamber news and events. A number of committees allow members to get involved in the Chamber’s work and provide even more opportunities to network. Perhaps most important, the Chamber is a vehicle whereby members can unite their voices in the economic and legislative arenas. The Kirksville Chamber of Commerce is devoted to supporting its members as well as enriching the community as a great place to live, work, and play.

Kirksville Downtown Improvement Committee The Kirksville Downtown Improvement Committee, Inc. (KDIC) works to strengthen the center of the Kirksville community by creating a positive image, fostering economic development, and revitalizing and preserving downtown Kirksville, while promoting the area as an exciting place to shop, dine, live, work, be entertained, invest, and own a business. KDIC is involved with the city of Kirksville in participation and implementation of the DREAM (Downtown Revitalization and Economic Assistance for Missouri) Initiative. The city of Kirksville was designated a DREAM Community in August 2007. Since that time, it has received several grants to help revitalize the downtown area, created a downtown TIF (tax increment financing) district, and developed downtown design guidelines. Ongoing efforts include beautification, downtown events, a master plan, and updated signage. KDIC has a full-time Executive Director, Jeremy Pingel, and is governed by an 11-member volunteer board of directors. KDIC has been working toward the establishment of a Community Improvement District (CID) for downtown Kirksville. The purpose of establishing a CID would be to provide funds to host events and make improvements to the downtown area and have someone to direct it. CIDs are organized for the purpose of financing a wide range of publicuse facilities and establishing and managing policies and public services relative to the needs of the district. The CID would allow the district to establish a half-cent sales tax to help fund downtown events, ongoing improvement, publications, beautification, the addition of green space/
walking trails, marketing for the downtown area, and much more. The process will include a petition from at least 50 percent of the downtown property owners, followed by an authorizing ordinance approved the Kirksville City Council. It is estimated that the process could be complete by early 2012.
Kirksville Regional Airport www.kirksvillecity.com
Located four miles south of Kirksville on the west side of U.S. Highway 63, the Kirksville Regional Airport has been an important part of Kirksville and Adair County since the early 1930s, when it was created as a backup military airport.
Federal grants and fuel sales currently provide the funding for operations of the airport. Cape Air has partnered with American Airlines to provide three round-trip flights a day, seven days a week, from Kirksville to LambertSt. Louis International Airport. Passengers can now connect to the world with fast, affordable, daily flights to St. Louis, and they can enjoy convenient baggage check-throughs and free airport parking at the Kirksville Regional Airport. Airport Director David Hall said approximately 8,000 passengers travel through Kirksville Regional each year, and that number is steadily increasing. The airport is also home to cargo operations for United Parcel Services and flight activity for numerous local corporations.

New Dental School At a press conference held by ATSU President Dr. Jack Magruder, attended by a full house of community members in Kirksville on Feb. 17, 2011, Dr. Carl Bynum, chair of the ATSU Board of Trustees, made the following announcement: “The A.T. Still University Board of Trustees unanimously supports bringing a branch of ATSU’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health to the university’s Kirksville campus. We further encourage President Magruder to take the necessary next steps to move this important project forward.” This part of the announcement caused the packed room to erupt in spontaneous applause. The news was what the community had been waiting for since a feasibility study had begun several months before. Dr. Bynum added, “We also advise the president that capital requests must be approved by the Board and that the program must achieve accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation and the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.” These are critical steps to be taken as the project moves forward. President Magruder stated at the press conference, “A dental program on the Kirksville campus of ATSU is perfectly aligned with the mission of the university and the vision of the Board to address an unmet patient need in Missouri and to serve rural locations and underserved populations.” President Magruder thanked the residents of Kirksville and the region for their generous support for the dental program. Through the independent group Community Friends for ATSU Dental, numerous local businesses, organizations, and citizens raised more than $1 million to help ATSU start the program in Kirksville. He also thanked the faculty and staff of ATSU, who gave generously in support of the new program. The Kirksville program will be a branch campus of the innovative and successful model of dental education at ATSU’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health in Mesa, Arizona. Plans call for the program to begin with a cohort of 45 students in the fall of 2013, graduating its first class in 2017.

Truly Something for Everyone
K
irksville, Missouri, is a thriving community that offers the best of both worlds — small-town values with city amenities. This exciting, dynamic region offers businesses the resources they need to succeed in a wholesome and safe environment. From quaint bungalows to Victorian classics, the Kirksville area has a home to match anyone’s taste, and the hospitality and friendly neighbors to make them feel welcome. When asked why an individual would wish to locate in Kirksville, Mark Whitney, REALTOR® with Century 21 Whitney, responded that it would be better to reframe the question to ask why an individual would not wish to locate in the area.
“We live in a community that has so much to offer,” the lifelong Kirksville resident said. “We see the four seasons in their entirety, and we have a beautiful state park and ample wildlife. Our cost of living is modest, and quality of living is high. We have such a diverse choice of eateries, shopping, and community events. There is truly something for everyone, and the people are so helpful, caring, and sincere. It is a community where people make the difference.” Whitney said that at any given time there are about 200–250 homes for sale in the Kirksville area. The average sales price of $88,000 can provide a family with a two- to three-bedroom home with one to two baths and a one-car garage. Families can choose from homes in established neighborhoods, historic homes, and
homes in newer neighborhoods. A wide variety of rental property is also available, including apartments and rental homes. With 567 square miles of land, Adair County has a population of just over 25,000, while the city of Kirksville is home to around 17,500 individuals. Kirksville serves north central Missouri as an educational, medical, agricultural, and manufacturing center. The Kirksville Area Chamber is dedicated to sustaining a strong business climate in a community where people can live, work, and play. Agriculture, industry, medicine, and education all employ many Kirksville and northeast Missouri citizens and have helped the community to mature into the region’s economic and cultural center as well.

Recreation & Entertainment Indoors, Outdoors, All Around the Town
A Sportsman’s Paradise For the second year in a row, Outdoor Life magazine has listed Kirksville in both its top 20 “Whitetail Wondertowns” and its top 200 towns for outdoorsmen. It comes as no surprise to the people who call Adair County home. “I’ve hunted all over, and this is just a good place to be,” said John Williams, a retired principal and lifelong Kirksville resident who now works for the nationally renowned Drury Outdoors team. “When I was a kid there weren’t any deer or turkey here, but thanks to the Conservation Commission and all of their efforts, it’s really a quality place to hunt now. Rifle deer season in Kirksville is a bigger deal than Christmas as far as families getting together and people coming to town.” Looming large in the community’s accolades from Outdoor Life is the abundance of public land nearby, including nearly 4,000 acres just minutes from town among the Big Creek, Sugar Creek, and Montgomery Woods conservation areas, as well as the massive Union Ridge and Indian Hills conservation areas less than an hour’s drive away. According to Matt Wolken, northeast region supervisor for the Missouri Department of Conservation, the mix of hardwoods and agriculture in Adair County lends itself to the production of deer and turkeys, but Kirksville’s Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce
reputation as a deer hunting hotspot can also be attributed to sound herd management. “We’ve had a four-point antler restriction on deer for several years now, and that’s made a big difference,” Wolken explained. “Instead of 70 percent of our 18-month-old deer being killed, a lot of them are living to 2.5 years or better. Because of our genetics, nutrition, and our location as far north as we are, a 2.5-year-old deer is big enough that most hunters are tickled to death. We’ve had unlimited doe tags up here for a number of years as well, so hunters can buy as many archery and firearm antlerless tags as they want for a very reasonable rate, and that’s made a difference, too.” Whitetail may be king in Kirksville, but other pursuits are available as well. Though numbers are down due to several unusually wet nesting seasons, wild turkey hunting is still a strong Adair County tradition. For waterfowlers, Hazel Creek Lake and the Chariton River provide local duck hunting options, and late winter hunting of resident Canada geese also has a following. Often overlooked, squirrel hunting in the region offers easy access and liberal limits for small game hunters. Prime fishing in Adair County adds to its appeal. Fishermen will find ample opportunities for largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish, as well as unique offerings like trout fishing at
