elcome to Knox County, “Indiana’s First County, a historic county with a revered past, a vibrant present and an exciting future, located in southwest Indiana. The county seat is in the City of Vincennes, which has an atmosphere and charm fostered by residents who believe in the city’s past and present. The love of history is embodied in the beautiful homes, churches and public buildings that grace the city’s unique landscape. Knox County is also enhanced with the cities of Bicknell, Oaktown, Wheatland, Freelandville and Monroe City, all of which have a great appeal and allure. Knox County is not only revered for its history, but is also an ideal location for business or family. Our diverse economy forms a strong business and employment base ranging from manufacturing to distribution, from tourism to education, and from health care to retail sectors. The natural environment has always played a key role in Knox County’s identity, whether it is the lazy Wabash River or the rich farmlands. It is our hope that you will fall in love with this beautiful county nestled in southwest Indiana. The future looks very bright for Knox County. With world-class health care and higher education, unemployment rates consistently among the lowest in the state, and real estate prices well in check, Knox County

is poised for growth. A new environmentally responsible coal gasification power facility in northern Knox County will bring new jobs and set a standard for coal power generating stations across this county. The City of Vincennes plans to have the river-walk project completed in the very near future, and the Red Skelton Performing Arts Theater is a welcome addition to our vibrant arts community. The Knox County Chamber has been focusing on bringing new technologies to Knox County with multipliable broadband providers. The Chamber has been key in bringing free Wi-Fi service to downtown Vincennes, and we are encouraged about a new Wi-Max service available in Vincennes, making this county one of the first in the nation to receive this new type of broadband service. We are all very proud of what Knox County has and the promise of an even brighter future. The people of Knox County invite you to enjoy all that we have to offer, and it is our hope you will decide to make our home, yours. Marc McNeece President/CEO Knox County Chamber of Commerce

Meet Vincennes Indiana’s Undiscovered Jewel

N

estled in the Wabash River Valley, Vincennes has the feel of a small town with the diversity and opportunities of a big city. It is home to a historic district that treasures its past and cuttingedge industry and health care that embrace the future. Upon arriving, you’ll see the friendly people and feel right at home. At night, thousands of stars are visible in our clear skies. We enjoy four seasons in Knox County: the beautiful explosion of flowers that marks the spring, a temperate summer with occasional rainstorms, the colorful foliage of fall, and snow in the winter. These weather conditions are perfect for a variety of outdoor activities: boating on the Wabash River, camping, hunting, fishing, biking, golfing, sightseeing and much more. Encompassing more than 500 square miles, Knox County boasts some of the richest farmland in the country, perhaps best known for its mouth-watering cantaloupes and watermelons. A leader in the medical community, Good Samaritan Hospital is one of the county’s major employers. Vincennes, with just over 18,000 residents, attracts medical professionals who can care for patients in top-notch facilities. People who seek help at the hospital are not just numbers, they’re friends and neighbors of those who took the oath to heal. Knox County is proud of its small-town friendliness, which is shown to citizens and

visitors alike. It is the hub of many of the state’s attractions, with easy access to interstates and other major roads that lead to Indiana’s numerous sites. Hit the northbound highway for a twohour ride and you’ll reach the state’s capital and the home of the 2007 Super Bowl Champions, the Indianapolis Colts. U.S. 41 leads to the Bluegrass State, Kentucky, just about an hour south. Head east just 73 miles and you’ll end up in Bloomington, home of the Indiana University Hoosiers. Just a stone’s throw west and you’ll be in the Land of Lincoln — Illinois. Smack dab in the middle of it all is the great county of Knox. Vincennes is a city rich with history and tradition. From the surrender of the British to the legendary George Rogers Clark in 1779, to the present-day celebration of Clark’s victory, residents and visitors alike revel in the triumph of freedom at the annual Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous. Buoyed by community and civic leadership passionate about the past, the city preserves its historic charm, while residents enjoy contemporary convenience tempered with an eye to preservation. Stroll along Main Street and visit unique shops offering everything from sophisticated interior decor to antiques; from homemade pastries to custom, hand-crafted jewelry. Or visit the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, dedicated in 1936 by President Franklin Roosevelt to honor the heroic deeds of a small troop of militiamen who captured

historic Fort Sackville from a British garrison, claiming the region for a new nation and Manifest Destiny. Just 18 years before President Roosevelt dedicated this huge memorial for Clark’s victory, a legacy was born on Lyndale Avenue in Vincennes. Funny man Red Skelton, known to many as Vincennes’ favorite son, made his way into the world on July 18, 1913, inside his childhood home at 111 W. Lyndale Ave. His birthplace remains, facing a brand-new performing arts center named in his honor on the campus of Vincennes University. The homestead of the ninth president of the United States, William Henry Harrison, is in Vincennes. Harrison’s home from 1803 to 1812 is located at 3 W. Scott St. He and his family lived in this opulent mansion when he was governor of the Indiana Territory. With one of the state’s major junior colleges calling Knox County home, education is a major part of the community. Vincennes University not only provides an educational core, but also offers venues for lectures, film festivals, and performing and fine arts. Annually, more than 100,000 people tour the Knox County area. Benefiting from all the city’s guests are Vincennes businesses, independent and corporate, family-owned and franchised, which continue to flourish and grow thanks to the vision of community and civic leaders dedicated to providing the infrastructure necessary to economic growth while retaining the city’s allure. www.knoxcountychamber.com 5

Celebrating Our Culture Make Your Mark on Vincennes’ Artistic Canvas

C

ultural pursuits in Knox County offer an endless canvas upon which artists can leave their individual mark, with opportunities in performance and visual arts, theater, dance, sculpture, writing, and painting.

Performing Arts The Red Skelton Performing Arts Center Vincennes University, through the financial support of the Indiana Legislature and private donations, is working to preserve and honor the memory and legacy of Red Skelton. The Red Skelton Performing Arts Center was officially dedicated on February 24, 2006. When Vincennes University opened the doors to the center, it opened a world of opportunity to students, visitors and fans from around the globe. The building includes an 850-seat theater dedicated to the extraordinary life and years of exemplary professional work by a great Hoosier and American. Red Skelton touched the lives of every generation during his more than 70 years in the entertainment business. Although Red died in 1997, he continues to influence people of all ages through his achievements as a clown, comedian, actor, writer, painter, patriot and humanitarian. In addition to the theater, the Performing Arts Center includes classrooms, rehearsal rooms and dressing rooms. The grand foyer serves as a gallery for Red Skelton paintings, statues and movie posters. A variety of uses are envisioned for the Performing Arts Center. The theater will host Vincennes University 6 Knox County Chamber of Commerce

theatrical and musical productions along with special events, convocations and conventions. The Performing Arts Center is within a block of Red Skelton’s birthplace in Vincennes. Less than a month after his death on September 7, 1997, the Vincennes University Board of Trustees voted to seek funding to construct the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center. Old Town Players Supporting and preserving the performing arts was the objective when a small group of dedicated individuals established the Old Town Players (OTP) company in November 1977. Since this humble beginning, OTP has succeeded in fulfilling that mission. The members of the Old Town Players provide live performances on Broadway at Fifth Street. For almost 30 years, Old Town Players has dedicated itself to presenting the performing arts as a means to stimulate and inspire through exceptional artistry. Utilizing volunteers, OTP promotes education through opportunities for all ages in atmosphere of caring, support and professionalism. As a nonprofit community theater, OTP is committed to the belief that the arts should involve, engage, reflect and nourish the community. Located just minutes from downtown in the heart of Vincennes’ historic district, this versatile group of thespians performs in an elegant stone building. A cornerstone of local culture, the members of the Old Town Players perform an array of drama, comedy and musical theater.

With talented playwrights, experienced direction and professional performances, the OTP troupe wows audiences with both original and classic productions. Led by theater veterans, the group holds open auditions, offering performance opportunities to talented individuals of all ages and backgrounds. From The Sound of Music to Arsenic and Old Lace, the actors of the Old Town Players offer a repertoire of cultural alternatives to those who prefer live theater to television or Hollywood.

Visual Arts The Northwest Territory Art Guild provides a supportive atmosphere for sculptors, painters and illustrators whose works grace the halls of the Knox County Chamber of Commerce and the Vincennes/Knox County Convention and Visitors Bureau. On many of Vincennes’ tree-lined avenues, eyes are drawn to unique wind sculptures, an art form developed by an ex-machinist turned artisan who makes the most of metal. Crafted from steel, his creations keep him busy in the winter and grace the local landscape year-round. Local artist Brad Rock, a graphic designer and professor at Vincennes University, has created limited-edition paintings and murals depicting the history and unique atmosphere of his hometown. In Vincennes, craftsman and artists can find their own unique niche and not only revel in it, but also develop a market for it.

The region’s premier festivals and art shows provide many with the opportunity to sell their creations, whether their medium is canvas, wood or metal.

Vincennes Sister Cities Adding breadth to the city’s cultural and heritage experience is one of Vincennes’ most unique offerings, an exchange program with its sister cities, Vincennes, France, and Wasserburg, Germany. Part of International Sister Cities for over a decade, the local program provides opportunities for students and adults to travel between these European cities and Vincennes, exchanging ideas and experience. The vision of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Sister Cities program exists to promote cultural exchanges and create citizen diplomats, and in Vincennes, that vision has been realized. Vincennes mayors and others have traveled to France and Germany, and in return dignitaries from France and Germany have traveled and stayed in Vincennes. High school students are visiting back and forth across the Atlantic these days, and several overseas communities have become involved. An opportunity to promote cultural awareness, education and diversity, the Sister Cities program continues to expand.

region after just a few years in operation. Supported by the nonprofit Farmers Market Alliance, the endeavor united the best local produce growers with civic leaders who envisioned weekend shopping with flair. On Saturday mornings from late May to early October, lovers of fresh fruits and vegetables can fill their pantries while also browsing booths selling handmade wood crafts, quilts, fresh and dried flowers, and homemade bread. Managed by a farmer, the produce market offers local growers an opportunity to sell the fruits of their labor, from melons, to sweet corn, to potatoes, to apples. While looking, shoppers can relax to music from gospel to instrumental. They can even learn to make culinary masterpieces from local chefs. A major summer attraction, the Vincennes Farmers Market has captured the charm, grace and intimacy of traditional outdoor European shopping.

Knox County Communities Are Focused on Fine – and Affordable – Living

L

ow unemployment coupled with reasonable housing rates make Knox County an ideal place to live. With a low cost of living — about 9 percent below the national average — and an array of residential and commercial properties throughout the county, businesses and home buyers can find just what they are looking for in the quiet, southwest Indiana communities of Knox County.

Residential Housing in Vincennes and Knox County offers a wide range of choices. Older, wellbuilt and maintained homes start at under $50,000, while custom-built homes at $150,000 and up rival the finest homes in the nation. From historic downtown neighborhoods, to the manicured landscapes of subdivisions, to quiet country living, Knox County has areas to suit the needs of individuals and families alike. The housing market in Knox County and Vincennes has remained affordable and vital for years. In Vincennes, the average home cost is $82,000, while county home buyers are spending about $69,000 on average. Spacious lots can be purchased for under $50,000 in landscaped, secure developments, where new, elegant homes range in price from $400,000 to over $1 million. The rate of home building is testimony to the growth of this uniquely located county, bounded by the Wabash River

to the west and within a few hours’ drive of urban convenience. Whether your dreams and tastes include a historic, two-story, cedar-sided home or a contemporary ranch in a manicured neighborhood, Knox County has the home you seek. There are upscale residential neighborhoods. Some subdivisions offer easy access to area golf courses. Children can attend the city’s award-winning public schools, and Vincennes’ private schools are conveniently near. Quiet, wooded neighborhoods are ideal for those seeking upscale living at an affordable price. Second Street When it comes to transportation, education and commerce in Vincennes, Second Street is a main thoroughfare. It connects commuters not only to Vincennes University and the downtown area along Main Street, but also to some of Vincennes’ oldest and most historic sites. Anchored by the Old Cathedral and the George Rogers Clark Memorial, Second Street creates a gateway from historic monuments to U.S. 50, a National Scenic Highway. Second Street is a historic corridor showcasing many of the city’s oldest buildings, including the Old State Bank, Indiana’s first bank. Besides providing access from one part of the city to the next, Second Street is extremely important when it comes to history and tourism.

Second Street also acts as the front door to Vincennes University. The Isaac K. Beckes Student Union, a crown jewel of the university, is very much a community center and is used by the citizens of Knox County for weddings, parties and meetings. Not far from Second Street is the Vincennes historic district, where nearly 2,000 homes and commercial buildings have long-term neighborhood stability. Vincennes Historic District Vincennes is the oldest city in Indiana. “Old Town” is the legal description of most of the downtown area, and much of Old Town is contained within a federal historic district. Homes in Old Town range from mansions to bungalows. Most were built between 75 and 125 years ago. The downtown area of Vincennes offers a nice compromise between urban and suburban living. Quiet residential streets exist just a block away from business streets. Downtown residents are almost able to lead a vehicle-free existence if they choose. Within the city’s historic district, property values continue to steadily increase. Residential property prices range from $50,000 to $150,000. The intent of the district is to provide unique housing opportunities while preserving Vincennes’ rich history, honoring the first residents who settled here in 1732. From two- and three-story mansions to compact cottages, the historic district offers www.knoxcountychamber.com 15

something for anyone seeking in-town convenience in a quiet, small-town atmosphere.

Commercial From small businesses to sprawling industry, Knox County has the space and the infrastructure to encourage expansion. Unencumbered by encroachment and strategically set between larger cities, the county enjoys easy access to U.S. highways and is close to interstate highways. The presence of Vincennes University ensures a workforce that’s both well-trained and highly skilled. Sixth Street’s Established Commerce This main thoroughfare, minutes from the university and downtown, offers commercial opportunities for both industry and small businesses. Properties are affordable and highly sought after on this street that connects to U.S. 41 on the north side of the city. North Sixth Street is home to dozens of retail centers, restaurants and a hub of activity that offers a whole spectrum of good eating — everything from down-home cookin’ to familiar franchises. For international tastes, Chinese buffets and authentic Mexican fare are located here.

16 Knox County Chamber of Commerce

A number of national companies have a presence on Sixth Street, neighbors to familyowned operations that have been in business for decades. Companies operate out of traditional commercial buildings and historic properties that add to the area’s atmosphere. Hart Street’s Building Boom You can get just about anything you want along Hart Street in Vincennes, where commerce is booming and future growth is just around the corner. Another growing area of large retail outlets, small businesses, restaurants and other commercial enterprises, this is one of Vincennes’ main arteries. Hart intersects with U.S. 41, attracting residents and shoppers from surrounding communities. In addition to a new six-screen theater and new restaurants, other businesses, like banks, car dealers, retail outlets and consulting firms find Hart Street an attractive location. Two elegant assisted-living communities located on or near the Hart Street commercial district offer residents easy access to necessities. A newly expanded interchange relieves traffic congestion and provides future growth opportunities for residential and commercial

development. Bierhaus Boulevard, a new connector road between Hart Street and Ind. 61, will be the site of a new Kohl’s department store and is ready to receive other businesses. This connector road is nearly parallel to, and just about one-half a mile from, Kimmell Road, where the Wal-Mart Supercenter and other thriving businesses are located. U.S. 41 Industrial Park The vision of the Knox County Develop ment Corporation, the industrial park is home to an international manufacturing plant and other businesses that lend a dynamic economic viability to the area. Futaba Indiana of America makes automotive parts for Toyota inside the park and employs about 300 people. Another plant, Excell USA, also makes automotive/ plastic parts and employs 120. Located along U.S. 41, just south of Vincennes, the site has plenty of available acreage, and infrastructure is already in place. This is a prime location for establishing business and industry.

Great Neighbors Make a Great Community Meet the Communities of Knox County

T

hroughout Knox County are several small communities with distinct features that make them great homes. Just a few minutes away from Vincennes, the center of the county, these folks don’t have to sacrifice the convenience of shopping centers, medical facilities and entertainment when they choose the tranquility of a small hometown. Residents of Bicknell, Decker, Fritchton,

Oaktown, Bruceville, Freelandville, Monroe City, Edwardsport, Sandborn and Westphalia have a sense of pride that can only be found in unique, quaint neighborhoods.

Bicknell Bicknell, north of Vincennes, hosts Knox County’s annual 4-H Fair — the oldest in Indiana — and a Labor Day Parade and

Homecoming celebration. Connected to the county seat by Indiana Highway 67, which shortens the commute from country to city, Bicknell is a community where long-standing traditions meet fresh ideas. Bicknell’s leaders envision a bright future and remain involved with city, county and state government. Bicknell’s improvement plans and programs cover every aspect of the community.

Knox County’s annual 4-H Fair is held in Bicknell.

There’s a commitment to keep business thriving through the efforts of a “Good Start Program, funded by a grant from the USDA and the Indiana Rural Community Assistance program. A committee of residents and business owners brainstorm ideas to enhance recreation options for youth. After-school activities are being developed, with the possible construction of a skate park. There are also plans to start a Farmers Market in Bicknell, much like the market already up and running in Vincennes. With the produce available in the northern part of the Knox County, there would be abundance there for purchase. Looking ahead, city officials are improving infrastructure and upgrading roads and utilities to invite new construction of homes and businesses. Rather than wooing large industrial concerns, Bicknell’s leaders hope smaller, independent or franchised businesses will choose their city. Though they won’t discourage big business and the jobs it would bring, leaders and residents are committed to preserving the charm and grace of their hometown.

Graceful neighborhoods converge on Main Street, where new coffeehouses and businesses coexist with established diners, offices and shops. Thankful for neighborhoods inviting unlocked front doors, young parents have formed recreational sports leagues, offering baseball and softball along with the North Knox Football League and a youth basketball league. A new community center is in the works, and churches remain a center of activity, as the Bicknell Area Ministerial Association makes plans for a coming youth center. When summer arrives, local residents gear up for the thousands who pour into the community for the Knox County 4-H Fair, a midsummer tradition that brings hundreds together. County youngsters spend months in preparation, raising their winning rabbits, horses, hogs and cattle to show at the fair. Or they grow produce, design original garments or cook homemade confections to thrill the judges and capture the grand prize. On Labor Day, Bicknell hosts a nearly week-long celebration of its past, present and future, and the community gathers for the crowning of Miss Bicknell, who rides at the head of the parade. Two North Knox schools are located in Bicknell: Central Elementary, near the city’s downtown, and the high school, located just outside of town but linked to Main Street by Ind. 159.

Edwardsport Just a few minutes north of Bicknell is the quaint town of Edwardsport. It is home of another North Knox school – East Elementary and Junior High School.

Edwardsport has opportunity on the horizon, as Cinergy/PSI considers construction of a $1 billion coal-gasification electricitygenerating plant. If the plant is built here, it will bring an estimated $40 million in coal purchases and an estimated $40 million in annual operation and maintenance expenditures. For now, this community of about 350 people is proud of a new water tower that increased capacity from 30,000 gallons to 100,000 gallons. Not only does it serve consumers, but in the event of an emergency, it eases the minds of those who serve on the Edwardsport Volunteer Fire Department.

Freelandville In Freelandville, about six miles from Bicknell, is a large community center that residents call their home away from home. It is often used for family reunions and wedding receptions. Built with elbow grease and the sweat of residents, this brick and mortar facility holds town meetings. A group of Freelandville residents formed an Improvement Club that simply gets things done. A major asset is the Community Home for senior citizens. Expansion is in the future with the hopes of an outpatient physical therapy center and a rehabilitation center.

Fritchton Situated just southeast of Vincennes is the town of Fritchton. When U.S. 50 passed Fritchton by, the quiet little town got even quieter, but folks who live here wouldn’t have it any other way. It boasts a beautiful fire station staffed by volunteers. Although only about 60 people

Monroe City Monroe City literally has a field of dreams for its children thanks to the help of Bruce and Melanie Self. After their 9-year-old daughter, Kylie, died in 2002, they decided to do something for the children in their community. They bought some land and donated money to the South Knox Youth Baseball League. Vectron Energy also donated 10 acres, and construction of baseball fields is under way. The town also has the Blue Jeans Community Center, which offers computer and Internet access, a museum, a library, community meeting rooms, a gym, a stage, a playground, a cafeteria, outdoor and indoor basketball courts, a senior center, health screenings, and meeting rooms. The First Church of God was rebuilt after it was destroyed by a fire in 2005. A family life center with a full gym and stage was added.

Oaktown Founded in 1854, Oaktown has a population of about 630 people. Native son Daniel Beery became an Olympic gold medalist as a member of the men’s rowing team that competed in Greece in 2004. Big things are brewing for Oaktown. The town is working on a $1.3 million water system improvement project, and there are hopes that several coal mines might open. An organization called Greater Oaktown Organization for Development (GOOD) put up welcome signs on U.S. 41 at both ends of Oaktown. Regulars visit the Sunoco station for delicious sugar and chocolate chip cookies. Employees boast that all calories are removed before the price is rung up on the register. Summer is a hopping season with youth baseball and softball leagues. Oak Village Nursing Home cares for several elderly residents. Knox County is home to many unique eateries and shopping centers.

Sandborn Just a few minutes from Westphalia is Sandborn, home to about 450 residents. At the Blue Jay Junction, folks can fill up their gas tanks and pick up a snack, but many in Sandborn like to take out a deck of cards and play a game or two of euchre. The Magpie Tea Room offers luncheons and classes on making candy or gardening. On Sunday, men, women and children come together at First Christian Church, which faces Main Street. Inside the walls, generations of families have said their prayers.

Westphalia Time seems to move a little slower in the little town of Westphalia, just north of Edwardsport. With a population of 150, there are no long lines at the town’s post office, and certainly traffic never gets jammed. A special store, the Settler’s Gift Shop, is similar to a rustic cabin, with a genuine wagon outside it. Owned by Westphalia resident Lisa Blair, the business features country gifts and antiques. Additionally, the Country Charm CafÊ offers up mouth-watering delights.

Wheatland Wheatland celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2008, and big plans are in store. There will be a festival with a history train to tour historical sites, a parade, food booth, yard sales, and a gospel sing. The town gently spills into U.S. 50 with easy access to Vincennes or Washington, where groceries and other necessary items can easily be purchased. Then it’s time to return home to an easy life in the country. Tucked away in this quiet town is a brand-new fire station for the Steen Township Fire Department. Gladly taking on departments in some of the larger cities, the structure is 45,000 square feet with three bays for trucks.

History Lives in Vincennes Two Lives – Two American Legends

T

he courageous trek of Revolutionary War hero George Rogers Clark and the legacy of William Henry Harrison, ninth president of the United States, have been well preserved in Knox County.

The Clark Memorial Clark’s contributions to history are remembered through an imposing though graceful monument built in 1931. Clark was only 25 years old when he conceived the idea of leading his brave frontiersmen into Illinois Country. Truly a man of vision, Clark felt that only a strike at the heart of the British-controlled countryside would end the horror of Indian raids on frontier settlements. Clark and a dedicated band crossed the Wabash in the bitter cold of winter to force the surrender of a British stronghold held by Lt. Gov. Henry Hamilton. An intense interest in commemorating the great accomplishments of George Rogers Clark developed among the citizens of Vincennes and the state of Indiana during the early 1920s as the 150th anniversary of the American Revolution neared. After various proposals had been considered, President Calvin Coolidge signed into law a resolution establishing the George Rogers Clark Sesquicentennial Commission on May 23, 1928. The 15-member commission was created for the purpose of “designing and constructing at or near the site of Fort Sackville ... a permanent memorial, commemorating the winning of the Old Northwest and the achievements of George Rogers Clark and his associates.” 30 Knox County Chamber of Commerce

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt dedicated the memorial on June 14, 1936. In 1940, the memorial became a unit of the Indiana Department of Conservation. Upon entering the memorial rotunda, the presence of George Rogers Clark is immediately felt upon viewing the Hermon McNeil statue of soldier and patriot, Clark, standing in military uniform. The bronze statue of a youthful Clark stands 7.5 feet tall. The statue and its marble pedestal together weigh 12 tons. The inscription at the base of the Clark statue reads, “If a country is not worth protecting it is not worth claiming.” Upon the walls of the memorial rotunda, seven murals depict the Clark expedition story. The murals, which are oil on canvas, stand 28 feet tall. It took artist Ezra Winter and six assistants two years to complete them.

Grouseland “Elegance” best describes Grouseland, the Georgian home built by Harrison in l803–04 during the period when he was Governor of the Indiana Territory. Harrison named his home Grouseland because of the abundance of grouse in the region. Because Harrison served as ninth President of the United States, Grouseland is also a presidential site. The home was not only a residence for Harrison, his wife Anna and their children, but also a center of government for the Indiana Territory and a fortress in times of turmoil. Because Vincennes was centrally located in the most populated area of the

Indiana Territory, it was made the first capital. Harrison was the most qualified man to be appointed governor, and he accepted the position, serving from 1800–1812. As governor of the Territory he was responsible for Indian affairs and building a community as a buttress against the power of France. When Harrison arrived in Vincennes, he wanted to build a home fit for a governor’s residence, as well as a fortress for protection. He bought 200 acres along the Wabash with a walnut grove on it. Inspired by his family’s home in Virginia, a Georgian plantation mansion on the James River, Harrison hired Pennsylvania contractor William Lindsey to begin construction of the Territory’s first brick residence in 1803. The house, finished in 1804, consisted of a 2.5-story great house and a one-and-a-half-story dependency in the rear and was said to have cost $20,000. Visitors today can tour the home where the Harrison family lived and where governmental work was conducted, as well as the dependency, where household work was centered. The furniture and accessories of the house are of the period of Harrison’s occupancy; some of them are Harrison pieces. Harrison’s victorious battles with the Indians at Tippecanoe and with the British and the Indians at The Battle of the Thames made him a national hero and helped propel him to victory in the 1840 Presidential Campaign. The museum also houses relics of the raucous and colorful Harrison–Tyler campaign of 1840, including campaign literature, posters and buttons featuring the famous

“Tippecanoe and Tyler Too slogan. Harrison died of pneumonia just one month after being inaugurated as president; but the Harrison family achieved national political stature once again when Harrison’s grandson, Benjamin Harrison, was elected as the 23rd president of the United States. Exhibits of frontier relics, Harrison family portraits and historic artwork can also be viewed at the museum.

the jumping-off place for Territorial Gov. William Henry Harrison’s rendezvous with destiny, the Battle of Tippecanoe. Fort Knox II became a hospital for the sick and wounded of that battle who were floated down river on boats from Fort Harrison in Terre Haute. Today, the fort is outlined with short posts, and interpretive markers tell the story of the site. It is located three miles north of Vincennes.

Other Regional Historic Sites

St. Francis Xavier Church St. Francis Xavier Church in Vincennes is also known as the Old Cathedral Church. It is the oldest church in Indiana and sits next to the Wabash River. The current church is the third church to be built on this site and was built between 1824 and 1834. It is known today as a complex because it has the church, the Old Cathedral library, a museum, and the Old French and Indian Cemetery. Over 4,000 early settlers of this

The city of Vincennes had its beginning in 1732, when the French wanted to build a trading post equidistant from Detroit, New Orleans and St. Louis. A band of Frenchmen, led by François Marie Bissot, Sieur de Vincennes, founded the city in 1732 by establishing a fort on the banks of the Wabash River. Today, many historic sites in Vincennes have achieved state recognition for the important roles they played not only in the history of Indiana, but of the entire United States. Fort Knox II In 1803, the army garrison within the town was moved to a bluff three miles north of Vincennes after local residents complained the soldiers spent most of their time in local saloons. The site, a bluff overlooking the Wabash River, was chosen because of its command of the river, a good boat landing and a nearby spring. Fort Knox II was born. But with the activities of the Shawnee brothers Tecumseh and The Prophet, the local situation became more dangerous. More soldiers were assigned to the area and on September 26, 1811, the fort, under the command of Capt. Zachary Taylor, became

area are buried in the cemetery. Adding to the mystique, a crypt was placed inside the church where four bishops are buried. Indiana history is again repeated by having the oldest library in the state attached to the Old Cathedral. Red House From 1800 to 1813, Vincennes was the capital of the Indiana Territory. The Indiana Legislature, called the General Assembly, met in various locations throughout Vincennes. In 1811, the General Assembly moved into the building that has been preserved and available for viewing. The building was never called the Territory Capitol or Legislative Hall. It was simply called the “Red House.â€? Built in 1805 as a tailor shop, the Red House is a small two-story building with a wood peg frame. The speaker of the house sat in a tall chair in the middle of the room and conducted the meetings. The secretary sat at a small desk and recorded the bills. Legislators sat on the benches on either side of the speaker. Elihu Stout Print Shop In 1804, Gov. Harrison brought Elihu Stout to Vincennes. Stout had been a journeyman printer with the Kentucky Gazette in Lexington, Kentucky. Harrison asked Stout to come to Vincennes to print the laws of the Territory. When the paper was first published in 1804, it was called the Indiana Gazette. A fire destroyed the shop in 1806, and when Stout started the paper up again the following year, he renamed it the Western Sun. The paper, still in circulation, is now the Vincennes Sun-Commercial. Visitors to the Elihu Stout Print Shop can step back to a time when a page of newsprint was meticulously crafted letter by letter. Old State Bank Built in 1838, the Old State Bank is the oldest bank building in Indiana and is located at 112 N. Second Street in Vincennes. The bank began business in a rented building on First Street. The bank was robbed on January 26, 1838. The robbers made off with more than $20,000 — quite a princely sum in those days. Construction of the current building began in July 1838, and the bank moved into the building upon its completion in November 1838. The façade is an imitation of the front of a Greek temple. The style is carried over into the main room of the bank, where six fluted columns, more than 30 feet tall, support a bell-shaped cupola. Also of interest in the main room is the original hand-riveted steel vault. The vault measures 6 feet by 8 feet and 32 Knox County Chamber of Commerce

William Henry Harrison and other leading citizens of the Indiana Territory established the Jefferson Academy in 1801. It was named for the new president, Thomas Jefferson, whose portrait can be seen above the fireplace. Classes were conducted in the main room of the rectory. At age 15, students would come to the college for three years of instruction. Tuition for one year was $16 plus a cord of firewood. The teacher was paid $400. The academy was chartered as Vincennes University in 1806. Indian Mounds Two large mounds stand on the heights overlooking Vincennes to the south and about a mile apart. Originally they were named Upper Sugarloaf and Lower Sugarloaf, from their resemblance to large conical loaves of sugar used in pioneer times. The Upper Sugarloaf has been renamed Son of Tabac Mound in honor of a local Piankeshaw Indian chief. The Buffalo Trace road from Louisville passed near the mound, and early travelers climbed to its top for a view — or “prospect, as they called it — of Vincennes on the prairie below.

In 1872, a 46-foot shaft through the center of the mound revealed layers of bone fragments, ashes and clay. In 1897 the Lower Sugarloaf, now called Pyramid Mound, was excavated. A skeleton and arrowheads were found, as well as a clay pot dating from A.D. 900. The artifacts are on display at Grouseland.

Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous This re-enactment, known as the Rendezvous, is sponsored annually by the Spirit of Vincennes Inc. Since the late 1970s, the citizens of Vincennes, the re-enactors of the Northwest Territory Alliance (NWTA), and the employees of the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park (NHP) have collaborated to present this distinguished 18th-century historical gathering. The event’s popularity is such that it attracts 400 to 500 re-enactors along with an estimated 35,000 visitors. The majority of the activities, such as the selling of merchandise and food, the demonstration of arts and crafts, Colonial period entertainment, and the re-creation of Revolutionary War battles takes place upon the French Commons, located adjacent to the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park. Everyone is invited to “get into the spirit by visiting the annual Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous during the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.

Strong Churches Contributing to a Strong Community

T

he heart of a community is deeply affected by what people believe. Knox County is a community with religious traditions and diversity. There are 65 churches in Knox County. There is a wide variety of denominations represented, from Catholic to Charismatic, Presbyterian to Pentecostal, Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran and Independent. Knox County is enriched by its faith communities, which nurture the moral foundation of the community. The foundation of Knox County is mixed with its religious history. The parish of St. Francis Xavier, “Old Cathedral, is the oldest congregation in Indiana. As early as 1734 the settlement was visited by Jesuit missionary priests. The first resident pastor, Fr. Sebastian Meurin, S.J., came in May 1748. The parish records begin on April 21, 1749. The Old Cathedral Library is the oldest library in the state of Indiana and contains 10,000–12,000 rare volumes. With this early influence, Knox County has a strong Catholic heritage, with six churches and Flaget Elementary School and Rivet Middle/High School. “Old Cathedral has been completely restored in 2007 for the 275th Anniversary.

There is a great spirit of cooperation among the congregations of the community. The downtown churches often share in offering joint Lenten and Good Friday services. There have been occasional Community Prayer Gatherings with believers from many congregations led by a cross-section of clergy. Several churches have offered a Fall Festival in the Park. There is a wide variety of ways the congregations of Knox County enrich the community. From the children and youth programs, preschools and daycare, and counseling, to musical programs year-round; from fish fries and pork chop picnics to fricassee and ice cream socials, the churches of Knox County enhance the lives of the people who make this community their home. First Church of God Vincennes has offered a dynamic children’s summer music camp culminating in a community musical, as well as The POWER TEAM and contemporary music artists POINT OF GRACE. First Church of God Monroe City recovered from a tragic fire to build a beautiful new facility in 2006. Community United Methodist Church Vincennes was founded when three congregations merged

in 1991. Among Community’s ministries are holiday meals for the community. First Baptist Vincennes has offered Worship through the Arts, which has featured the Ballet Magnificat, contemporary music artist Kathy Triccoli, and nationally known author Phillip Gulley from Vincennes. Campus Ministries seeks to enrich the spiritual life of the Vincennes University community. There is also a variety of groups which offer ministry, including The Offerings Prayer Ministry, The Blue Jean Community Center in Monroe City, Loaves and Fishes free meals, St. Vincent De Paul Store, Higher Bound, and Another Chance Christ Ministries transitional housing. Knox County is a better place to live and raise a family because of the relationships and values fostered through the churches and religious organizations who minister here. Many volunteers for community activities come from our churches. Much of the charity and donations to fundraising activities come from the congregations of this great county. Strong churches contribute to a strong community. In Knox County we are blessed.
