Meet the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce Letter From President Ida Schossow Welcome to the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce. The Mission of the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce is to promote an environment conducive to business growth, to pursue economic development and enhance the quality of life in the Greater Orange Area by providing resources, leadership and support to our members. The Chamber of Commerce celebrated their 125 Year Anniversary in 2012. Orange hosted the Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament, Sabine River Challenge, presented by the STARK Cultural Venues March 14–17, 2013. Over four days, 33,650 people came to the season opener of the Elite Series, beating the previous four-day record of 17,920. We are proud of one of our greatest assets — our waterways. We invite you to fish where the pros fished. The Greater Orange Area is far ahead of other towns our size in cultural opportunities. We have smalltown charm but world-class culture. We are proud of our community and we hope you will spend some time and enjoy the area. Please take time to stop by the Chamber office and get some information about the attractions you will want to visit. The Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce is a membership of over 400 businesses and individuals made up of groups from three different cities: Orange, Pinehurst and West Orange. We also serve the communities of Orangefield, Little Cypress and Mauriceville. The Chamber is here to promote our member businesses and give them the support they need to grow. We provide many networking opportunities such as the monthly Breakfast Connections. We also promote community involvement with the Mardi Gras Parade, Orange County Riverfront Festival, Student of the Month and the Honor Student Luncheon. We will continue to look for ways to serve our community and businesses to help them to thrive and grow. The Greater Orange Area is a great place to live, work and play! Ida Schossow President

Letter From The Chairman What an exciting time it is to be serving as the Chairman of the Board of the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce as we celebrate our 125th Anniversary. When I think back on all that this organization has accomplished and how it has served the community of Orange County through the years, I am humbled to realize that I am following in the footsteps of some of Orange’s greatest business leaders. I will do my best to live up to their fine example of leadership, civic pride and community involvement. I am honored to be serving alongside a motivated and dedicated group of volunteer members and a distinguished board of directors. Each has pledged to give of their time and talents to represent the membership of our Chamber and to guide this organization as we work together to help our community grow and prosper. In Orange, Texas, we have proven over and over again that we can endure through adversity. My goal as this year’s Chamber chairman is to help our community move beyond the challenges of the past; to help us all to DREAM of an even brighter future for Orange County; to BELIEVE in our ability to ACHIEVE the goals that we set for ourselves; and to have CONFIDENCE in each other and the great things we can accomplish if we all work together. As the daughter of a chamber of commerce executive, I have spent most of my life with and around chamber leaders. I know these people to be the ones who get things done, the ones who inspire others, and the ones who have the most fun. I look forward to working with and getting to know my fellow Orange Chamber members better — and I know we are going to have a blast! What will be said of us 125 years from now? I hope they will recall the way we helped to renew a sense of community pride and set in motion new dreams, goals and achievements that are remembered long after we are gone. Please join me as we begin the next chapter of our Chamber’s proud history. Our future and the vitality of our community will be what we make of it. “Celebrating 125 Years of Working For a Brighter Orange”

The Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce traces its history to the year 1887, when a citizens committee was formed to promote the area’s business potential.

Celebrating 125 Years of Service

I

n 2012, the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated 125 years of service to its communities. Though the city of Orange was officially created in 1858, its origins date back to the 1600s, when an Atakapa Indian tribe settled in the area. In the 1700s, first French and then Spanish explorers traversed the region. Since the area is the first entry point to Texas from Louisiana, settlers crossed over as early as 1821. The åcommunity was first named “Green’s Bluff,” followed by “Jefferson” and “Madison,” before it was finally changed to Orange in 1858. The 1857 Census shared this vivid description: “Madison sits like a fairy upon a bewitching crescent, formed by the Sabine, the houses neatly painted, stretching like the links of a chain clear round the bend of a river, so that standing at the uppermost part of the town, the eye is presented with a continuous line of fascinating cottages, all in a circle, and looming up from a profusion of flowers, shrubbery, and ornamental trees of the most voluptuous attire.... There is a constant

4 4

breeze from the from the gulf, and it is one of the most pleasant … health inspiring localities on which my eyes ever turned.” The Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce traces its history to the year 1887, when a citizens committee was formed to promote the area’s business potential. A reorganization of the committee resulted in the formation of the city’s Board of Trade in 1899. In 1902, the Progressive League of Orange was formed; it was composed of representatives from leading manufacturing institutions and businesses, as well as professionals and individuals who were concerned with the growth and development of the city. The League’s projects included road improvements and the development of a deep-water canal and an opera house. The Progressive League of Orange also implemented a campaign to attract investors to Orange. Between 1918 and 1922, the Orange Chamber of Commerce was organized from a consolidation of its predecessors, and since that time the

Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce

Chamber has successfully stimulated business opportunities throughout the region. In 1947, the Chamber formed an Industrial Development Committee to attract new business, particularly chemical plants, into the area. Following up on Orange’s proud heritage of shipbuilding for the United States military, the Chamber saw the future of petrochemicals and brought muchneeded jobs to the area just as its veterans were returning home from World War II. Today the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce is recognized as in important element in the town’s commercial heritage. In addition to the city of Orange, the Chamber represents and advocates for the communities of Pinehurst, West Orange, Mauriceville and Orangefield. A dedicated and highly talented Board of Directors — as well as committees on Operations, Government, Economic Development, Special Projects, Education and Membership — work hard to promote the community’s vision of small-town charm and world-class culture.

While LANXESS Orange Site rubber products are used primarily in the manufacture of modern, fuel-efficient performance tires and sidewalls, they are also an important part of many everyday products in the automotive, plastics manufacturing, construction and sports industries, including golf balls, weather stripping, cable and wire, automotive profiles, automotive and industrial belts, hoses, plastics, and roofing membranes. The LANXESS Orange site has an annual capacity of around 320,000 metric tons of synthetic rubber, and it currently employs around 320 employees and approximately 200 contract workers. A recent expansion at the Orange site increased the production capacity of the Therban® HNBR manufacturing unit by 40 percent and the local headcount by five employees. To further strengthen the supply chain and provide access to larger volumes of one of its key raw materials, butadiene, the Performance Butadiene Rubber Business Unit commissioned a new rail tank car unloading station in January 2011. Previously, butadiene could only be received via pipeline delivery. The project was designed in accordance with the latest industry standards regarding the safe handling of this petrochemical and was completed in just six months. The Orange site’s training center, destroyed during the Hurricane Ike devastation in Texas, was re-built and re-opened in November 2010. This facility features innovative designs, ergonomically supportive furnishings, and state-of-the art audio/visual equipment.

A Master Plan In Action

D

owntown revitalization is underway in the city of Orange. The Orange Riverfront Boardwalk and Pavilion Project, projected for completion in the first half of 2013, will provide for the stabilization of the civilian riverfront and the mitigation of erosion. In addition, a 12-foot lighted boardwalk is being installed, along with a vertical performance pavilion at Division and 5th streets. According to Jay Trahan, director of economic development for the city of Orange, the boardwalk is being constructed of Massaranduba, a Brazilian hardwood with a 50-year sustainable life, and it will cover 1,440 linear feet throughout the downtown area. Four access points will be located along Front, Division and 5th streets, including an entrance at 2nd Street that will feature a memorial plaza with donor bricks and

historical markers from the community’s sesquicentennial project. “In addition to the physical stabilization of the area, the Orange Riverfront Boardwalk and Pavilion will greatly add to the quality of life, attracting people to the downtown area, which includes city offices, businesses, the Stark Foundation and Lamar State College-Orange, which has an enrollment of more than 2,800 students,” Trahan said. “The attractive downtown will offer a great deal of small business development potential, and the performance pavilion will provide a place for numerous weekend events. The entire project is a building block that will help position the downtown area as attractive for developers.” In addition to this project, Trahan said the downtown area is home to a new Dollar General

Lamar State CollegeOrange is also constructing a new 32,000-squarefoot nursing facility on its campus. “The city of Orange is home to friendly people who support the local community,” Trahan said. “Located just two hours east of Houston and three hours west of New Orleans, connected by I-10, the city offers a strong employer base along with small-town charm and world-class culture.”

Baptist Orange Hospital offers medical and surgical services for general and specialized care, including cardiology, endoscopy, gynecology, internal medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, ENT and general surgery. Full-time chaplain services are available to patients and their families in need of emotional and spiritual support.

Newly Renovated Telemetry Floor Within the last year, the hospital renovated the second-floor telemetry unit, now boasting 24 spacious rooms, 18 of which are private. The telemetry unit is part of the hospital’s patient tower, which is also home to a surgical suite, including five operating rooms and an eight-bed postanesthesia/surgery recovery room, providing advances for both inpatient and outpatient surgical needs. The patient tower also has a modern obstetrical facility with five birthing rooms, eight additional postpartum beds, a cesarean operating room and parents’ lounge. Patients and visitors are welcomed into the tower through a grand atrium and are assisted by volunteers from the American Red Cross.

Emergency The Emergency Department at Baptist Orange Hospital provides 24-hour emergency service from physicians and nursing staff specially trained in emergency medicine. Additional practitioners are staffed during peak hours to improve through-put and decrease patient wait times. Advances in Cardiology With the aid of the latest technology — including a 64-slice CT, new echocardiography machines and vascular equipment — along with a team of board certified cardiologists, the Cardiovascular Diagnostic Center is capable of detecting heart problems before they happen. Baptist Orange Hospital was recently recognized by the Texas Health Care Quality Improvement Program with the Award of Excellence for their efficient cardiac care, resulting in thorough examinations and more accurate diagnoses. As part of a community outreach effort to promote awareness of cardiac diseases, the hospital participated in educating high school athletes about the signs and symptoms of various cardiac health concerns.

Community Service Baptist Orange Hospital is more than just a medical services supplier. The hospital considers itself a partner with the community, contributing to the educational, social and spiritual needs of area residents. The hospital hosts many luncheons throughout the year for local groups such as Southeast Texas Hospice, the American Red Cross hospital volunteers and physician office practices. Chef Terry Gautier is widely known for his culinary arts, and during the lunch hour you will find in the dining room not only the families of patients but local business leaders and citizens. For many years, Baptist Orange Hospital has sponsored a 55+ Luncheon bi-monthly with education for the senior population, and the Chaplaincy Department regularly hosts a clergy fellowship gathering. The hospital also partners with both Bridge City Elementary and Christian Community School to offer activities such as health and wellness testing and flu shots for the faculty, presentations to students, and trips to Baptist Orange Hospital for pizza, crafts and patient visits. Community education and disease prevention is important to the Baptist team, as evidenced

completed in 2001, is the campus focal point. It houses both the library collection and the college’s administrative offices. The library utilizes the latest information technology to maximize student access to scholarly resources. The other academic buildings have been recently renovated and provide an excellent learning environment. Laboratories are modern and utilize state-of-the art equipment. Accredited by the Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges, Lamar State College-Orange is a two-year institution that offers both academic transfer and careeroriented programs of instruction. It is part of the Texas State University System, which provides centralized support services to the system’s eight member institutions. The academic transfer curriculum at LSC-O is designed for students who ultimately want

to earn a bachelor’s degree. Students can earn an associate degree while taking freshman and sophomore-level courses that transfer to any public four-year institution in Texas. Students who want immediate entry into the job market can choose from a variety of technical programs that are geared to the needs of the local workforce. LSC-O offers more than 20 different career-oriented degree and certificate programs, including outstanding and recognized programs in nursing, dental assisting, industrial technology and information technology. The college also provides an array of non-credit learning opportunities that range from hobby and personal enrichment courses to customized workforce training. The workforce offerings address specific needs identified by industry and can be delivered on campus or at the workplace. Some topics can be covered in one-day seminars, while others require extended study. Among the college’s most successful non-credit programs is Accelerated Certification for Educators (ACE), a program of study that offers students who already have a bachelor’s degree an avenue for earning state certification as a classroom teacher. LSC-O provides an affordable, quality education in an environment that emphasizes friendly service and personal attention. Although the college has expanded its student body and enhanced its facilities, each individual student is still important. LSC-O faculty and staff will work with each student to develop a course of study that suits his or her needs.

In addition to the live coverage throughout the event, the Orange, Texas region was highlighted in Bassmaster and B.A.S.S. Times magazines, as well as on outdoor billboards. Financial commitments from the Orange County Commissioner’s Court, the Orange County Hotel Occupancy Tax Committee, the Orange County Economic Development Corporation, and STARK Cultural Venues were key to bringing the event to Orange. It was an exciting week full of fishing, fun and festivities that was enjoyed not only by our out-of-town guest, but also our area residents.” The week’s events also included a concert by country music star Neal McCoy, sponsored by
