Welcome to the Greater Orange Area! On behalf of the 400 member companies of the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce, I would like to welcome you to our community. You are moving here at a most exciting time in our city’s history. We are in an economic boom in our specialty of industry and shipbuilding. We are experiencing growth in the tourism of our cultural venues. This is an area of economic upswing we have not experienced before. Yet we have indulged in our cultural arts for many years now. A financial noise has begun again along the Sabine River we have not heard in over 30 years: shipbuilding. The quality of life is very important and vital to the families who dwell here. As a Chamber we strive to make this community attractive and desirable and to promote an atmosphere of concern and participation in voluntary community activities. As I am sure you will find, Orange is an ideal place to live, work, and play. This magazine will be a valuable source of information about the many assets that our community has to offer. We can also help you get involved in your new community. As a visitor or newcomer you may have questions. I invite you to give the Chamber a call, or better yet, come by and let’s talk! We are waiting to tell you about our city of “Small Town Charm and World Class Culture.”
There are so many exciting things happening right here in our Greater Orange Area! The Board of the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce has picked up their tools and begun cultivating these happenings and helping them come to fruition. To coincide with the branding campaign that has taken place for Orange and the Greater Orange area, the Chamber has decided to tie into that same mindset and take action to make our community a better place to live, work, play, and raise your family. In addition, we’re working to help make Orange a more desirable place to visit by being involved with community cleanup and beautification. There are many cultural activities, civic organizations, festivals, parades, churches, and more for the people of this area to become involved. There is a deep history in this community of families who loved Orange and wanted to see it grow and prosper. Those dreams are coming true! The Chamber is here to help our local businesses thrive and do our part to promote economic development. We not only want to do our part in giving our current businesses the support they need, but we also want to encourage continued development and growth. Additionally, we want the community as a whole to understand the asset we can be as a source of information and as a promoter of community involvement through the likes of our Mardi Gras Festival and Pageant, Honor Student Luncheon, Student of the Month Recognition, and much more.

what cities make up the greater orange area chamber? “Orange and its neighbors must be prosperous …”
T
he Chamber of Commerce aims to strengthen the Orange economy and make this area a wonderful place to live. In order for that to come true, Orange and its neighbors must be prosperous. To make this happen, the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce also includes many of its neighbors. More than 400 businesses, organizations, and individuals make up the Chamber. These people and groups come from three different cities: Orange, Pinehurst, and West Orange. Some of the areas in the county also join the Chamber, including Orangefield, Little Cypress, and Mauriceville. In this section, we’ll go over the leaders, the demographics, and the special characteristics that make each city unique.
City of Orange About Orange Orange ranks as the largest city in the Chamber, and it is the namesake and county seat for Orange County. Orange also ranks as the most populous city in the county, with 18,643 residents. The city itself occupies about 21.4 square miles.
Orange benefits from having a cadre of veteran leadership. Mayor W. Brown Claybar has served as mayor since May 2002. A funeral director by trade, Mayor Claybar has served Orange for more than half a decade. Theresa Adams Beauchamp serves as
a councilwoman (place one) and mayor pro tem. She joined the City of Orange Council in May 2004. She is an assistant principal in the local school district. The other three members bring a combined decade of local government experience to

overview The city does more to serve residents as well. Take the modern facilities of the Orange Library, for example. From the comfort of your computer desk, you can browse the library’s collection, visit the kids’ page, and check out upcoming events. But don’t let that stop you from visiting. The library is a great place to spend time with friends or family and take in some knowledge. Check it out at 220 North 5th Street.

the Council. Jimmy Sims, who works in sales, and Deborah Mitchell, who is a family service manager, both joined the Council in May 2005. Sims represents place two, and Mitchell represents place four. overview
City of Pinehurst About Pinehurst Pinehurst is the smallest of the three cities. It takes up about two square miles and is home to about 2,274 residents. Pinehurst sits northwest of Orange and has a strong base of retail businesses that are served by the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce. Of course, like Orange and West Orange, Pinehurst has many hardworking city leaders. Long-time city councilman T.W. Permenter will likely take over the position of mayor in the upcoming election. Billy Permenter serves on the Council and has filled that position in a temporary capacity since September 2007. Bob Williams and John Zerko have also served as councilmen for more than one term, and they will continue to do so. Pinehurst also has its own police depart ment and an incredibly dedicated volunteer fire department. The police department is located at 3640 Mockingbird Street.
Greetings From the Mayor To all who visit, travel through, or decide to make West Orange your home, welcome! Please take time to stop by City Hall and to visit our very popular Seale-Alford Plaza, Caffey Park, and the Lou Ann Gomez Nature Preserve. Also, do not forget to take a ride down “Chemical Row,” where our area boasts of chemical plants E.I. DuPont, Invista, Solvay Solexis, Lanxess, Chevron-Phillips, and Firestone Polymers. In addition, I invite you to patronize our businesses and visit one of our many churches. I hope you enjoy your time here in West Orange and look forward to seeing you again. Have a great day!

overview West Orange About West Orange West Orange’s name tells you exactly where it’s located: just west of Orange. Incorporated in 1954, the city covers about four square miles and has 20 miles of streets running through it. The city’s population is 4,111. Like Orange and Pinehurst, West Orange benefits from experienced, caring leaders. Mayor Roy McDonald has served in his position since 1995, and his current term runs through 2009. The mayor pro-tem boasts just as much experience on the Council. Shirley Bonnin started in that position in 1995 as well, and her term runs through 2008. Dale Dardeau and Frances Droddy both started on the Council in 2001. The other two members are newer to the Council: Charles Winter started in 2007, and Mike Shugart Sr. started in 2006. The Council posts its business and meeting agendas online before each session at cityofwestorange.com. Like its neighbor to the east, West Orange boasts a plethora of excellent city services. The police department is a 24-hour department that encourages citizens to call at any time for any need. The police department has nine sworn officers, and it is located at 2700 Austin Avenue.
The fire department works daily to help citizens as well. The fire station boasts four captains, 11 firefighters, a chaplain, and even a junior firefighter. The fire station is located at 2700 Western Avenue. The City of West Orange also hosts an annual event famous throughout the area for the fun it brings. In 2008, the city will host the 10th annual Holiday in the Park. The festivities are set up next door to the city hall at 2700 Western Avenue. There are plenty of foods, crafts, and activities for children at this annual party.

T
he City of Orange officially came into existence in 1836, the year Texas won its independence from Mexico. However, its history, like that of the Lone Star State, goes back many, many years prior to that memorable date. The area’s first known inhabitants were the Attacapas Indians, who arrived around 1600. They lived mostly on seafood and wild game and worshipped ancestors whom they believed came from the sea. In 1718, the French arrived, followed about 50 years later by the Spanish. The French developed a thriving pelt trade. Less successful than their predecessors, the Spanish gave way to the rising tide of American expansion and development. Early in the 18th century, the high banks on the Texas side of the Sabine River began to attract early pioneers who dared to enter the land destined to become the Republic of Texas, and later, the State of Texas. This point on the Sabine River was first known as Green’s Bluff, and also as Huntly. It was named after Reason Green, who surveyed the first land plot on the site. There was also a time when the community was known as the Lower Town of Jefferson. At another time, it was known as Madison, in honor of President James Madison, who was then serving his second term in office. Due to confusion with the town of Madisonville, Texas, it became necessary to give the growing community a new name. There are at least three versions of how Orange acquired its name. One belief holds that the name came from a citrus grove, owned by George A. Patillo, on the east side of the Neches River. Another maintains that it was named for “a large grove of native orange trees that once grew in that vicinity.” The most likely version is that it was named after Orange, New Jersey, the hometown of A.H. Reading, county surveyor and one of three commissioners authorized to organize the county in 1852. Each of these legends may contain a seed of truth. But regardless of its origin, Orange achieved its identity.
The town grew steadily and became a strategic link between East and West during the growth of this country. It served as a port for ships sailing the Sabine River, with cotton as the prevalent cargo. Lumber, cattle, and agriculture were also important in the growth and development of the area. The Civil War took its toll on the lives and property of Orange citizens. When hostilities ceased, tragedy continued. A reign of terror marked by extreme lawlessness followed the end of the war for a decade. In 1865, one of the worst wind and rain storms in Orange’s history hit the area, leaving more death and destruction in its wake. Although these events hampered progress, ranchers restocked cattle, additional experiments were made in agriculture, and more lumber yards were built.

range is located on a flat coastal plain in the extreme southeast corner of Texas. Orange’s climate is a mixture of tropical and temperate zone conditions. The area lies far enough south that the cold air masses of winter are moderate in severity, but still provide the stimulating effects of seasonal change. The average maximum temperatures range from the low 60s in January to the high 90s in the summer months. A few miles inland, away from the marked influence of the Gulf of Mexico, summer maximums are higher and winter minimums are lower than on the coast. Extreme departures from the normal temperatures seldom occur for more than four successive days. High normal rainfall, distributed quite evenly throughout the year, and prevailing southerly winds from the Gulf of Mexico explain the high humidity. The lightest precipitation usually occurs in March and October. Cloudy, rainy weather is most common in winter. Heavy rainfall occurs
in thunderstorms of short duration and as a result of infrequent tropical storms. Snow or sleet seldom occurs. The greatest snowfall recorded in any one storm was only 4.4 inches. The area enjoys approximately 60 percent sunshine throughout the year. The climate is favorable for outdoor activities throughout the year. Construction is active in all seasons, and outdoor sports and recreation are possible most of the time. The abundant rainfall, moderate temperatures, and short period of temperatures below 32 degrees are particularly favorable for farming and livestock production. The heaviest rainfall usually falls in the summer, when it is most needed for the rice crops, and the comparatively dry harvest season simplifies the reaping of rice and other crops. Cattle, raised on the open range provided by the wide coastal marshes, need little supplemental feeding or protection from the weather. Improved pastures are easily provided because of the moderate temperatures and abundant rainfall.

About the writer
he best we can figure, the Scots-Irish Dickey clan moved to Orange, Texas, in 1917. The lot of them loaded up and moved to the area from Thorndale, in Milam County. The women and children took the train, while the men loaded their belongings on wagons and trekked across the state. Dickeys have lived here ever since. A couple years after high school, I climbed in my own “covered wagon,” a two-toned black and white Chevy, and headed to Fort Worth, Texas, off on my own adventure. Since then, I’ve lived in a number of towns across Texas and halfway back, with a six-year stint on the island of Trinidad, West Indies. When I contemplated a setting for my Sidra Smart mystery series, I considered all of these locations and more, but none of them fit. Frustrated, I played with the idea of setting the series in Orange, but promptly dismissed it. After all, I argued, Orange was just home. An ordinary town set smack in the middle of mosquito-infested swampland, a town full of ordinary people doing ordinary things. But once spurred by the idea, I felt like our old plodding horse “Molly.” Once you turned her towards home, it was Katy-barthe-door. For the more I researched, the more

I discovered the mystical and mysterious elements resident in this area. Combine the colorful Cajun/Creole culture and superstitions with the proud, stubborn, hardworking Scots-Irish; the solid, dependable farmers and ranchers with the late-coming Northern executives, here to establish and maintain the oil industry. Add the area’s ghosts, like that of a police chief gunned down by, of all people, the pastor of First Baptist Church; the victims of vigilante lynching strung up on the gibbet limb of “The Hanging Tree”; the innocent slaves who didn’t survive storage in shacks out at Deweyville; and even earlier still, the spirits left behind by the cannibalistic Atakapa Indians. For texture, listen to the down-home southeast Texas accent, where verb tense is simple and seldom conjugated, where whole sentences get reduced to one or two words. (“Y’ont-to?” instead of “Do you want to?” or “Would you like to?”) For spice, add a crawfish boil and fresh seafood gumbo or some of the best Southern cooking this side of paradise. For flavor, add the mysterious Adams Bayou, meandering through town past the

Survivor Tree, a Pond Cypress dated at 1,200 years old — older than Christopher Columbus, Shakespeare, and even Galileo. Then add the exotic Blue Elbow Swamp, flowing between Texas and Louisiana. The result? A perfect setting for a mystery series. Mix all this together and you have a town with a friendliness and a concern for others, the sense of belonging to a place with a unique history not found in other small towns, the determination to keep on keeping on, despite depressions, wars, hurricanes, and industrial flux. In every book of the Sidra Smart series, there are examples of people who take their neighboring seriously and are concerned for others’ welfare. No wonder I fell in love with my hometown all over again. Once called a “pretty as a fairy tale” river port city, today, a new opportunity awaits the Greater Orange area. The tight, controlled grip of the past has lessened its hold. Orange stands on the edge of a bright new future. Fall in love with Orange all over again. Seek out its fascinating history and you will learn its mystery. It awaits your discovery.

I
t’s a good time to be in business in Orange. Industrial companies have started booming, developers have shown major interest in starting new subdivisions, and retail stands to increase substantially in the coming years. All areas of business have seen recent success, and that prosperity stands to continue.
Industry Orange County’s industry depends primarily on “Chemical Row,” a group of industrial companies that make everything from chemical parts to several everyday items. These companies process and manufacture chemicals required to make car parts, food containers, nylons, and many other everyday products we don’t typically associate with

chemicals. These manufacturers include DuPont, Invista, Chevron-Phillips, Solvay Solexis, Lanxess, Firestone, Honeywell, and Printpack. Petrochemicals as a whole is the largest industry in the Greater Orange Area. Signal International, which works on offshore oil rigs and large sea vessels, has grown quickly and has become a key part of the industry here. Temple Inland and its paperboard manufacturing company have also boosted the economy. They make paper cups and shipping containers, and they have expanded in recent years. In summer 2007, the company underwent a $25 million expansion that improved the efficiency of its lumber intake. These major companies combine with a scattering of small businesses to keep industry in Orange growing and thriving.
Service Orange has a long history with the service industry. Area services range from insurance to finance to real estate. Other areas, such as auto repair and sales, are also very vibrant. Local officials attribute this success to a long history of solid, service-based industries.
Retail As in much of the rest of the world, the biggest retailer in Orange is Wal-Mart. Additional grocery stores also see success in the area, with H-E-B, Kroger, and Market Basket all operating locations here. The backbone of this fine community is our small business entrepreneurs. We are very fortunate to have such a hardworking group of investors who provide an array of retail options for our residents. Providing all needs for your home are Parlors, an interior design firm selling furniture and interior accents; The Grapevine on 16th Street, specializing in grandfather clocks and gift items; and Interior Design Studio, located on Strickland Drive, which carries fabrics, flooring, furniture, and interior details for every look. framing options. Infocus Camera and Imaging, on 16th Street, supplies photographers from Houston to New Orleans and gifts for shoppers of all tastes. Mathews Jewelry, in the Market Place Shopping Center in Pinehurst, has an exquisite collection of jewelry. And in the historical district of downtown Orange we have Farmers Mercantile, established in 1919 and one of a few “general stores” still operating today. Another jewel of our town’s retail community is the c.delle bates Art Studio, located on Green Avenue. Delle is an accomplished local artist with a studio full of beauty, a must see in Orange. But in retail, the real excitement lies in the future. As the population and workforce in Orange continues to grow, major retailers have paid the area more and more attention. In the next few years, the area will see an influx of large and small commercial stores. In one industry, the boom has already begun. Right now, Orange has six brand-new hotels on the books — and that is just the first wave of a coming influx of retailers.
Restaurants Orange’s location on the map gives it a unique opportunity to meet a number of dining appetites. Orange sits on the border between Texas and Louisiana. As such, some of Louisiana’s savory traditional cooking has seeped across the Sabine River. These interesting tastes accompany the traditional Texas fare of steak-and-potatoes home cooking. Also, the county sits on the Gulf of Mexico, which means delicious and fresh seafood is never hard to come by. It’s all here in Orange; it’s just a matter of going out to get it. ll businesses in Orange County have an organization devoted to meeting their needs. The Orange County Economic Development Corporation was created in January 2003 as Orange County, the Port of Orange, and the Orange County cities of Bridge City, Pinehurst, Orange, West Orange, and Vidor joined together to make Orange County a better place to live. The Orange County EDC is a nonprofit organization that is governed by a nine-member board of directors with representatives from each of the cities, the county, and the Port of Orange. The corporation is helmed by Bobby Fillyaw, a veteran of economic development with 16 years of experience. The corporation maintains a Web site (www.orangecountyedc.com) with valuable information, including some available land and building sites within Orange County. The Orange County EDC is here to retain the businesses already established in Orange County. There are times when an established business, for whatever reason, needs to relocate, finds itself struggling financially, or needs help with other business issues. The Orange County EDC is able to confidentially address their needs and concerns or will 18 Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce
refer them to an agency that can provide the proper assistance. For prospective business looking to locate in our area, the Orange County EDC serves as the “one-stop shop” to answer a company’s relocation needs. The Orange County EDC helps target locations for the operations of the business, locates any potential incentives available, and addresses other issues such as workforce needs and the marketing aspects needed to make the business’ operation in Orange County successful. The Orange County EDC also works with many other area entities on a variety of projects, such as addressing workforce and housing issues. The corporation is currently working with Lamar State College-Orange, as well as other area educational institutions, on local training opportunities to better enable the local workforce to meet the future demands of local businesses. With the proposal of several new housing subdivisions and apartment complexes, they are also collaborating with real estate developers on planning for future residential and retail development. range looks toward its bright future. Citizens of Orange continue to work toward the revitalization of the downtown historical district, which runs from Green Avenue to Division Street and from Second Street to 10th Street. This revitalization plan will strengthen the retail base in the most highly traveled parts of the city. The plan will likely take 10 years to complete under the supervision of nationally renowned architects and city planners. The Stark Foundation will also play a prominent role in developing and executing this plan. The first stage of progress will be completed within the next three years. Officials will take the green area bordered by the Lutcher Theater, the Stark House, and City Hall and construct an extensive outdoor performance pavilion there. They hope to host music and other acts to attract audiences of all ages. Officials have also decided to add planters and street lights with a distinct historical style to give downtown its own whimsical personality. The developers also plan to add a series of two-story shops
that will pay homage to the city’s past of shops on the ground floors and residential apartments on the upper levels. Finally, the city will also add a boardwalk along the Sabine River at Front Street. Along this picturesque pathway, residents can walk, play, or browse in retail shops that will be installed along the way. Close your eyes and picture it now: a warm summer day in Orange, shopping and strolling along the river. It’s a wonderful thought that will soon become a reality.

an eclectic collection “The art scene in Orange is a definite treasure …”
N
estled on the southeast coast of Texas near the Louisiana border, Orange has flourished and prospered in its unique, rich culture. The world-renowned museum, theater, and historical venues spread through the Orange area reflect the region’s eclectic history and diversity. These priceless cultural venues honor and preserve the area’s earliest settlers and offer new performances and works of modern contributors. The art scene in Orange is a definite treasure for the long-time residents and a must see for visitors and newcomers. While Orange’s culture is a vibrant and celebrated mix of many different backgrounds and ideas, the Lutcher Stark and Brown families played a vital role in Orange’s early cultural development.
The Stark Museum of Art H.J. Lutcher Stark enjoyed the art of the American West. An Orange native born in 1887, he amassed a brilliant collection of Westernthemed pieces. The current collection at the Stark Museum of Art grew from his own holdings. Along with his wife, Nelda Childers, Stark founded the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation. This organization opened the Stark 26 Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce
Museum of Art under Nelda’s supervision on November 29, 1978. The museum expanded upon Stark’s original collection, and it has thrived ever since. Stark’s collection included paintings, sculptures, and prints. The pieces date back to the 19th century and include work from many prominent frontier artists. Stark also gathered several works from 20th-century artists in far-west colonies such as New Mexico. Embracing the full spectrum of interpretations of the time, Stark’s collection welcomed works from Native American artists. These fabulous pieces are steeped in history. The Native American works include baskets, pottery, and beautiful weavings. Today, the museum continues to offer several collections of great beauty. These collections range in theme from art and nature to art of the Old West. All of them maintain the Southwest theme Stark so enjoyed. The latest information about the museum and its holdings is available at www.starkmuseum.org. Interested parties can use the site to get directions, check out facility hours, and print out a handy map. The museum is conveniently located on Green Avenue, just down the street from several other cultural venues. Admission is free and bus parking is available.

Lutcher Theater of Performing Arts is the focal point of Orange Civic Plaza.
Lutcher Theater of Performing Arts
The 1,500-seat Lutcher Theater of Performing Arts sits as a central point of Orange Civic Plaza at 707 West Main Street. In February of 1980, it opened its doors to its first performer: world-famous pianist Liberace. Since then, the theater has welcomed shows ranging from traveling Broadway performances, to elaborate musicals, to one-man shows. Every year, the theater also plays host to the productions of the Orange Community Concert Association. As with the Stark Museum of Art, H.J. Lutcher Stark’s wife, Nelda Childers, oversaw the construction and opening of the theater. For up-to-date information on shows, visit www.lutcher.org.
W.H. Stark House
The W.H. Stark House has been designated a Texas Historical Landmark and is also listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. An 1894 Victorian home, located at 610 West Main Street just down from the Lutcher Theater, this beautiful piece of history towers three stories tall with 15 rooms. The house boasts a collection of glass, fixtures, and hardware imported from abroad and covers a magnificent 14,000 square feet. The history of the house is rich and fascinating. It was the home of William Henry Stark and his wife, Miriam Melissa Lutcher Stark. Many experts consider the home an excellent example of the extravagance enjoyed by wealthy Texans around the turn of the century. Stark

Private Schools: St. Mary School and Community Christian School St. Mary School opened its doors to students for the first time in 1924, with grades one through six taught by an order of Dominican sisters. The school has grown considerably since then. Grades six through eight were later added, and in 1949 the school issued diplomas to its first class of high school students. Though the high school closed in the 1970s, the school has continued to offer its students the best in private education. Today students in PreK3 through grade eight are educated by these fine teachers. St. Mary School is located at 2600 Bob Hall Road in Orange. Community Christian School was first established in Orange in 1977, starting as one large classroom with 35 students. After that first year, officials decided to organize the school into a more traditional classroom setup. The school added one grade every year until it featured eight grades. Officials then decided that a Christian secondary school was needed, and in 1989 the first graduating class of high school students passed through Community Christian School. Today the school features top-notch private education for students in grades kindergarten through high school. Community Christian School is located at 3400 Martin Luther King Drive in Orange.
Orange County students receive the very best in private education at St. Mary School and Community Christian School.

Faculty and staff take pride in helping students develop a course of study perfect for them. This two-year school also works hard to prepare students for four-year universities. The college offers excellent educational opportunities in nursing and allied health, business and technology, and the arts and sciences. The school offers Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees, along with certificates and other institutional awards. Additionally, the college’s Accelerated Certification for Educators program allows degreed individuals to receive teacher certification in Texas. Lamar has much to be proud of. A world-class welding school sits at the top of that list. The program was developed in recent years to give welding students all of the tools they need to learn the trade. The Welding Center was made possible by a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor and donations from the area’s industry, schools, and other organizations. The recent devastating hurricanes in the area and an influx of ship-building companies has skyrocketed the demand for welders in the Greater Orange Area. This school and program make it possible for students to fill those jobs. Lamar is also a leader in community service. The Continuing Education/Workforce Development Department provides non-credit learning opportunities for the community. It also provides special, customized training programs to meet the needs of industry and business in the area. The school began as a remodeled elementary school almost four decades ago, and today it is a six-building campus bringing life to the heart of downtown Orange. School administrators encourage everyone to visit as soon as possible and learn how the college can help in their lives. 32 Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce

T
here’s a lot to do near Orange, especially for outdoors lovers. In the city, one can browse the many historical sites or take in a show at the theater. But when the weather is nice and the sun is shining, Orange really comes alive. Parks are abundant throughout the Greater Orange Area, offering a wide range of activities from which to choose.
City of Orange Parks Twelve parks are located within Orange city limits, and most are pleasantly shaded under majestic trees. These parks feature paths for walking and jogging, plenty of benches, and a lot of playground equipment for the children to play on. Here’s a list of Orange’s parks: • Brownwood Park • Levingston Park • Lions Park • Navy Park • Northway Park • Norwood Park • Ochiltree Park • Pocket Park • Ridgemont Park • Simmons Field • Solomon Johnson Park • Sunset Park Lions Park (at the intersection of Main and 16th Street just off Green Avenue) is named for its large, intricate stone carving of a lion. The park is popular with families because of its wooden, contemporarystyle fantasyland facilities. The Lions Den
“ E ve r y n e i g h b o r h o o d h a s a n e a r by p a r k … ” Community Playground was designed by area school children and built by volunteers to create a fantasy playground for all to enjoy. Adults also like to spread picnic blankets on the hill beside the bayou, and a covered area is available for larger groups. Ochiltree Park, well-known for picnics and fishing, has a scenic view of the water, usually with a nice breeze to accompany it. Northway Park (located at the corner of Meeks Drive and Clark Lane) has a mile-long jogging trail winding through a wooded area. There are also swings and slides to entertain the youngsters. Simmons Field Park (on the corner of 3rd Street & Morrell Blvd.) has a basketball court, picnic area, and playground. Sunset Park (located on 16th Street at Sunset Circle) has a spacious playground and a large playing area. Other municipal parks are scattered throughout the city, so every neighborhood has a nearby park. Three parks totaling 32 acres are maintained for athletic activities such as tennis, softball, youth football, soccer, and baseball. Memorial Field Park (located on Eddleman Road), has fields for baseball and four lighted tennis courts. The City of Orange is in the process of developing a large area off Simmons Drive, along the Sabine River, which will be known as Riverfront Park. It will include boat-launch ramps, picnic areas, and facilities for area festivals. The Orange Parks & Recreation Department sponsors several athletic groups year-round. A Texas Amateur Athletic Federation-sanctioned softball league is conducted in the spring and summer. Tennis and swimming events are
also held. The Orange Parks & Recreation Department provides the facilities on a contract basis, with the sports being run by a board of directors. These sports include football, soccer, baseball, softball, and tennis. A complete list of the youth sports organizations is available at the Chamber of Commerce office.
Orange County Parks Orange County operates two parks. Blue Bird Fish Camp is located off Simmons Drive and has boat-launch ramps and picnic tables. The other county park is Claiborne West Park, located off I-10, 12 miles west of Orange. Claiborne West has 453 acres of land with picnic tables, cookout areas, a children’s playground, and a sculpted amphitheater with a seating capacity of 300. This park also offers electrical outlets, water, restrooms, public covered shelters with barbecue grills for larger groups, a softball field, hiking trails, a lookout cabin, and a stocked fish pond. For additional information on this beautiful park, call 409-745-2255.
Other Community Parks Systems Pinehurst has two parks, one on Lark Street with playground equipment, and the other on West Park Avenue with a jogging trail and exercise bars. West Orange has Wesco Park (located on Burnett behind the high school), which features a large grassy area for sports and other events, as well as a children’s playground. They are also in the process of developing a second park, which will include a gazebo, off Western Avenue near City Hall. www.goacc.org 33

Hunting, Fishing, and athletics “ Pe r f e c t f o r a l l s o r t s o f o u t d o o r a c t i v i t i e s … ” Hunting, Fishing, and Nature Orange County has a host of options for those interested in hunting and fishing. The city sits on the Gulf of Mexico and also on the banks of the Sabine River, which flows into Lake Sabine. This lake is said to have the most exciting saltwater fishing along the Gulf Coast. Anglers routinely snag redfish, speckled trout, and flounder here. The rural areas around Orange also offer many chances to hunt a variety of game. Fishing is a popular sport in the Orange County area. For saltwater fishing, Sabine Lake, at the end of the Sabine River, makes in-shore saltwater fishing available within minutes of any spot in Orange County. The lake offers a variety of game fish, such as flounder, channel bass, speckled trout, drum, and sheephead. If you prefer freshwater fishing, the Sabine River has bass, catfish, and crappie. Guides are available for fishing trips, and information on these can be found at the Chamber of Commerce office. Many boats are based at local marinas for use in fishing, boating, and water skiing in the river, bayous, and Sabine Lake. The sandbar on the Intracoastal Waterway is a 34 Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce
favorite spot for water skiing, as is the bayou in Bridge City. Hunting is another popular sport in the area. The surrounding country offers thick woods, swamps, and bayous. Duck and deer are commonly hunted in season with much success. Some dove hunting is also available during the season. Bird-watching is another favorite pastime of Orange Countians. Exotic birds, scenery, and wildlife are abundant in the area. One of the remaining flocks of whooping cranes winter on a protected island nearby. The entire Orange area is a bird sanctuary and has a large number and variety of birds. In nearby Sabine Pass, nature lovers can observe the many types of wildlife at Sea Rim State Park. The Big Thicket National Preserve, another favorite bird-watching and wildlife observation area, is about three hours away. It’s also known for its beautiful foliage. Guided tours are available. Nearby is Blue Elbow Swamp. This area includes 3,343 acres of wetlands that first opened to the public in 1996. It’s located along the Sabine River, and it is perfect for all sorts of outdoor activities. There are places to
hike, bird-watch, and explore the swamps. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department owns and manages this area. The group also provides canoe trips and fishing and hunting permits.
Fishing — both saltwater and freshwater — is a popular sport in the Orange County area.
recreation Sporting Activities Youth Sports Orange County’s football team, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs, won the Class 4A state title two years in a row and are always a contender to be reckoned with in local football, as are the teams from Orangefield and Little Cypress-Mauriceville. Fans fill the local stadiums every Friday night during football season to watch their teams play, whether at Orangefield, West OrangeStark, or Little Cypress-Mauriceville, and many travel to other areas to follow their favorite teams. There are also many sports programs for youth in the area, including baseball, softball, T-ball, basketball, boxing, football

Golf Golf is played throughout the year in the Greater Orange Area. There are two golf courses in Orange. Sunset Grove Country Club, on Sunset Drive, is a private club that offers golf, tennis, and swimming to its members. The other golf course in Orange is the DuPont Employees Recreation Association, where visitors are allowed to play by prior arrangement for a small greens fee. It is located at Irving Street and DuPont Drive in West Orange.

he course at Sunset Grove was designed by famed Scottish-born golf architect Donald Ross (1872–1948; donaldrosssociety.org). Ross designed over 400 courses in the United States, but only three in Texas. Ross’ most famous course is Pinehurst 2 in North Carolina. Ross’ goal for each course was to make each golf hole present a different problem; to arrange the course so that every stroke must be made with full concentration and the attention necessary to good golf, and to build each hole in such a manner that it wastes none of the ground at one’s disposal and takes advantage of every possibility. The story of the building of the course is worth re-telling. The two oil and timber
magnates in early Orange were Edgar Brown and W.H. Lutcher Stark. Brown owned the only golf course. Due to a disagreement, Stark was banned from playing on Brown’s golf course. To remedy the problem, Stark contacted Donald Ross in 1923 to design and build a golf course. The last nine holes were completed in 1926, for a total cost of $750,000 (over $9 million in 2007 dollars). A rustic club house was built in 1927 but was destroyed by fire in 1959. Another, more modern club house took its place. In 2005, Hurricane Rita badly damaged the newer clubhouse. It was remodeled and refurbished to give us the club house that we have today. The wooden pro shop was damaged beyond repair. A new pro shop stands in its place.

The course has 400 fewer trees than it had before Rita. After the death of W.H. Lutcher Stark in 1965, the course and all facilities were sold to the membership. Today, it is a nonprofit corporation owned by its shareholders. The course is the only Donald Ross course left in Texas that still uses the original design. The original Donald Ross plans are framed and hang in the Club House. The only changes that have been made are the addition of a watering system.

range is very proud of the cultural venues the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation are operating. They are The Frances Ann Lutcher Theatre for the Performing Arts, the W.H. Stark House, Stark Museum of Art, and the newly opened Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center. You will meet some of the most energetic and hospitable people from our community when you visit any of these locations.
Lutcher Theater Guild Lutcher Theater Guild was organized in 1980 for the first performance in the newly built Lutcher Theater. That historic opening night featured the famous Liberace and his grand piano. The Guild is 140 strong today. The men and women have become a family of friends who give their support to a worthwhile cause, and share a good time and great entertainment at each performance. Did I mention they can enjoy all the shows the Lutcher Theater hosts? Their duties help facilitate every aspect of running the theatre, including ticket-taking, concession, sets, lights, props, and best of all, hospitality to the patrons and entertainers. All these jobs are vital, and with the volunteers
helping, the theater can put even more funds toward community services. With over 5,000 volunteer hours worked a year, you can appreciate the dedication of the Lutcher Theater Guild. The relationships that have formed among them are those of friends and family. They look out for one another and perform good deeds among the group. What better way to spend free time than giving back to others?
Shangri La Botanical Gardens The Shangri La Botanical Gardens volunteers have that same spirit and energy for hard work. They number over 200 and have been digging in the dirt together since the inception of the nature classroom in 2004. The dream of the Foundation Board of Directors, the awesome landscape of Shangri La came to fruition with the help of these dedicated citizens. They began growing plants and sowing seeds long before the vine was cut at the grand opening ceremony in March 2008. When you visit the gardens, they greet you with their proud knowledge that they were, and are, part of it all. They have ownership in its beauty from the many hours of giving of their talent and time.
Shangri La volunteers have “individual opportunities” to volunteer, as Holly Hanson, volunteer coordinator, tells. These opportunities include office work, boat driving, tour guide, greenhouse jobs, and most of all, hospitality to their many visitors. As you can see, Orange is blessed to have such a wonderful group of citizens who show their support and love for their hometown enough to give back so many hours of dedication and service. They are truly giving back and handing out warm deeds to Orange, Texas. Many of the individuals that make up this pool of people seem to be over 55! Men and women, they balance each other out but share the same character trait — dedication. There is one Shangri La volunteer who is going on 90 and still comes in from Beaumont to participate. When asked why she still does it, she replied, “It is the best thing I do for myself.” What an example! Anyone wishing to join in their fun work should contact Cecil Broom at the Lutcher Theater Box Office or Holly Hanson at Shangri La. We appreciate all of these volunteers immensely. Thank you for all your hard work. You are an accent to this city of “Small Town Charm and World Class Culture.” www.goacc.org 39
