A HARD-WORKING COMMUNITY
P
ekin is rooted within a large and growing central Illinois industrial sector. The Pekin-Peoria Metropolitan Service Area, with a population of nearly 380,000, is home to a number of industries. One of our area’s largest employers is Caterpillar, Inc. Several of their local facilities — including their World Headquarters — are located near here.
INDUSTRIAL/MANUFACTURING Pekin has a solid base of industrial and manufacturing jobs of its own. In fact, 19 percent of Pekin residents are employed in the manufacturing industry. Two of our largest industrial employers in Pekin are Aventine Renewable Energy — a leading producer of ethanol, and Illinois Corn Processing — a fully integrated producer of ingredients and distillery products. Other large industrial employers located in Pekin include Tazewell Machine Works, Excel Foundry and Machine, and NRG Energy.
RIVERWAY BUSINESS PARK: LIGHT INDUSTRY Located on the south side of Pekin, Riverway Business Park is home to several light industrial manufacturers including Hanna Steel, Elecsys, Excalibur Seasoning, PAL Health Technology, Wheelworx and Winpak. Other businesses located in the Riverway Business Park include Amerhart, Illinois Central College Pekin, and the Federal Correctional Institution, a medium/minimum-security federal facility.
PRODUCTION AND FABRICATION A number of tool, pattern, machining, and fabrication shops are also based in the Pekin area. Other products originating in our area include industrial gases, agricultural chemicals and fertilizers, paperboard, aluminum castings, field seed, and hybrid corn.
“We liked the schools and were impressed with the park district. For our family, Pekin truly has been community, opportunity, and home.” - Becky S Pekin Business Owner and 17-Year Resident

Established Leadership. PROGRESSIVE INFLUENCE IS THE ROOT OF PEKIN TRADITION HISTORY Robert de La Salle, with a fleet of canoes and three men, is believed to be one of the first European explorers to visit the Pekin area. In 1680 his crew constructed a winter refuge in what is now the southeast quarter of section one in Pekin Township. Although travelers and Native Americans frequented the area, it was not until the summer of 1824 that Jonathon Tharp built a small log cabin on the high east bank of the Illinois River and encouraged his father, friends, and other family members to follow him. The local Native American residents, the Pottawatomi Indians, and their chief Shawubena were friendly toward these settlers. With a population of 1,500, the city incorporated and received its city charter in 1849. Residents adopted a mayor/alderman form of government, which was changed to the commission form in 1911.
GOVERNMENT Since 1995, a council-manager system has governed the city of Pekin. The City Council consists of a Mayor and six council members who are elected to staggered four-year terms. Additionally, a professional city manager is hired by the City Council to manage and enrich the daily operations of city government. 2627 ALLENTOWN ROAD PEKIN, IL 61554

They also provide community

The Pekin Fire Department helps to keep citizens safe by conducting annual fire inspection activities of local businesses and manufacturing facilities. They also provide hazardous materials response at the Technician level as well as high angle rescue, confined space rescue, and trench rescue. Due to the proximity to the Illinois River and numerous area lakes and ponds, surface water rescue is also provided. The department also fosters community relations with outreach programs like Shop with a Cop (for back to school supplies), Cops for Kids, Night Out Against Crime, and Shop with a Hero (for Christmas shopping). Additionally, officers volunteer their time year-round to raise money for Special Olympics. The Pekin Police Department places a strong focus on crime prevention and educating citizens with tips to protect themselves against crime. The city’s low crime rate is a direct reflection of the department’s commitment to the safety of Pekin. COUNTY OFFICES Pekin has served as the county seat for Tazewell County (population 135,394) since 1849. As the hub of county government, Pekin hosts the State’s Attorneys’ offices, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Tazewell County Justice Center. Many other county offices are located in downtown Pekin, including the Regional Superintendent of Schools, County Clerk & Recorder, County Treasurer, and County Coroner. STATE OFFICES The Illinois Secretary of State Driver’s License Facility and the Illinois Department of Human Services are two of the state agencies with offices in Pekin. GIVING OUR CHILDREN ROOTS AND WINGS
O
ne of the best things about Pekin is its ability to provide a foundation strong enough to feel like home, yet flexible enough to encourage the kind of opportunity that comes when one believes in the possibilities before them. Some might even call it having a strong “taproot.” This quality is evident throughout the city — and the story of Pekin’s history can be seen just by taking a look at the residential market here. Houses are as diverse in style and pricing as their residents are in age and occupation. Pekin homes represent a wide range of ages and styles, from brand-new subdivisions to older, more established neighborhoods. But they all reflect the sense of pride and community that exists here. Housing costs range from moderate to upper-end. If you’re seeking a starter home or looking to upgrade for more space or even downsize to a smaller but newer home, there is a neighborhood that will fit your family’s needs and budget. New subdivisions under construction have all the city services you would expect, along with stunning natural beauty that will delight you. Ranging from moderate to high-end in their construction, some of the newer neighborhoods are built around lakes or have wooded views you can enjoy from your deck. If you prefer an older, established neighborhood where the houses have “character” and amenities they “just don’t build like that anymore,” you can find that here too. From stately turn-of-the-century homes on tree-lined streets (even some brick streets) to bungalows built in the 1920s, to the brick ranch homes of the 1950s and beyond, there are a variety of homes in a price range to meet everyone’s wish lists and budgets. If you’re a golfer, there are plenty of homes located on or near Lick Creek Golf course, Pekin Country Club, and Sunset Hills Golf Club. Many of our neighborhoods offer safe, easy walking access to shopping, recreation, and parks. Photography by Deverman

PEKIN PARK DISTRICT Ask anyone who lives in or visits Pekin what they remember the most, and it’s likely they’ll say, “the parks.” When it comes to recreational opportunities, Pekin is the envy of virtually every community in Illinois and at the center of that is the Pekin Park District. Encompassing over 2,500 acres of land in 15 parks, it is the fifth-largest park district in the state. Most of the acreage is in four parks located on the outskirts of Pekin, which have been mostly preserved in their natural beauty. • Mineral Springs Park: Located in the heart of the city, Mineral Springs Park is the showpiece of the park district. a paddle boat ride, Mineral Springs Park is also the home of Parkside Athletics, Memorial Arena, DragonLand Water Park, Magic Dragon Golf and Games, the Miller Senior Citizens’ Center, Happy Tails Dog Park, the World’s Greatest Sundial, and the Sunken Gardens. This park also plays host to several major community events throughout the year, including the Pekin Marigold Festival, the Winter Wonderland Festival, and the Tazewell County 4-H Fair. • Riverfront Park: A collaborative effort between the City of Pekin and the Park District, Riverfront Park sits on six acres along the banks of the Illinois River. The park has several interactive water features, an event meadow, a festival plaza, a gazebo, riverboat playground, a picnic area, a fishing pier, a vehicle overlook area, a shaded river overlook for pedestrians, and interactive signage. • Soldwedel Program Center: Located in a tranquil wooded area adjacent to McNaughton Park, the Soldwedel Program Center offers nature based environmental educational programs for all ages, as well as a variety of other interesting classes and workshops. It also serves as a unique woodland meeting place and overnight lodging facility.
• Pekin Park Sports Complex: The newest gem added to the Park District’s top-notch facilities is this complex, featuring 12 ball diamonds (8 of which are lighted for nighttime games) for baseball and softball. The soccer area can accommodate up to 10 separate fields, depending on the age group. There are also four football fields, restrooms and concession facilities, a 1.6-mile walking path, playground, and parking for 500 cars. The complex is located on the corners of Fifth and Koch streets. Whether you’re interested in hiking and biking trails, a bluebird trail, a remote-control airfield, a special children’s playground area, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, wallyball courts, outdoor basketball courts, a winter ice skating rink, soccer and football fields, an X-treme skating park for roller blade and skate boards, sand volleyball, softball diamonds, group camping, horseback riding, or disc golf — the Pekin Park District has you covered! And if all of that isn’t enough, the Park District also offers more than 150 programs and classes for the community such as tumbling, dance, and computer classes. www.pekinchamber.com

GOLF Pekin golfers have plenty of choices when it’s time to hit the links, including two Park District courses. • Parkview: The oldest local course, Parkview offers a challenging 18 holes that are popular for all skill levels. • Lick Creek: Ranked as one of the top public golf courses by Golf Digest magazine, Lick Creek provides a greater challenge. • The Clubs at Sunset Hills: Open for public play, Sunset Hills is an 18-hole course with a full restaurant, bar, and banquet facilities. • Pekin Country Club: Provides 18 holes for local residents seeking a challenging course layout.
ILLINOIS RIVER RECREATION For the outdoor enthusiast, Pekin has the good fortune to be located on the banks of the Illinois River, which provides many opportunities to hunt, fish, boat, observe bald eagles, or view an egret rookery. Many people enjoy relaxing and enjoying the view from the riverfront pier, watching the tugboats and barges that work the river.
ORGANIZATIONS, SPORTS VENUES, AND ENTERTAINMENT HOTSPOTS Pekin’s young residents enjoy a plethora of organizations focused on providing and coordinating recreational activities. They include the Pekin Union Mission, the Boys & Girls Club of Pekin, and the Pekin YWCA, among others. Boys and girls of all ages can participate in

recreational and competitive youth sports programs including baseball, softball, swimming, ice hockey, football, soccer, and basketball. Over 100 different clubs and organizations are also wellestablished in the Pekin community. The Avanti’s Dome Events & Sports Center of Pekin is a 75,000-square-foot, versatile sports complex. bi-annual show of Broadway style songs over 5 nights of performances. Begun in 1953, the Civic Chorus has donated more than $186,000 back to various community groups and to awards scholarships to students pursuing a career in music each year. From musical performances to a thriving local theater troupe, the Pekin area has many entertainment offerings. Nearby you’ll also find the symphony, ballet, theater, opera, art museums, a planetarium, a zoo, professional sports, a riverboat casino, and major name concerts. Additionally, Pekin’s close proximity to a number of colleges and universities provides even more cultural and entertainment options. Pekin Paintball Park is an outdoor paintball field in Pekin. lessed with more than 50 churches practicing many different faiths, the Pekin community has a strong, rooted tradition of spirituality. The beautiful architecture of the church buildings — some of which date back many years — is as diverse as the number of denominations, ensuring numerous opportunities for celebrating spiritual traditions. A special non-denominational church service is held in Mineral Springs Park every year in conjunction with the Pekin Marigold Festival. The Pekin area is also home to several faith-based schools, covering all grade levels from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
“Finding a church home in Pekin, a place to grow spiritually, was as easy as walking through the door. Growing your relationship with God in Pekin presents many options and wherever you choose, God will lead the way.” - Heather R. Pekin resident

Supporting Local Businesses. COLLABORATING FOR A COMMON GOAL THE PEKIN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE In October of 1893 a group of like-minded businessmen incorporated the Citizen’s Improvement Association of Pekin. The organization was formed for the purpose of “advancing the business interest and promoting the commercial growth of the City of Pekin.” Over the years, the group changed its name and merged with another business organization, eventually becoming known as the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce in 1978. Today, the Chamber’s mission is simple — to help its members grow and prosper. Through advocacy, economic development initiatives, and benefit programs, the Chamber creates opportunities for all of its members to succeed. A strong and active Chamber of Commerce provides the community with support for quality of life events and support for local organizations. By
default, the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce also serves as the information clearinghouse for the community and is often the “front door” and first contact for people new to the Pekin area. Networking events help members connect with other businesses and community leaders, while the Chamber’s R. David Tebben Community Leadership Academy helps prepare current and future business leaders for the leadership challenges and opportunities within the community. Additionally, the Chamber is “home base” for two of the community’s most revered annual traditions — the 4th of July Honor America fireworks celebration and the Marigold Festival. As one of the oldest chambers in Illinois, the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce is a deeply integral part of the city of Pekin and a vital link in the chain of businesses, organizations, leaders, and volunteers that work collaboratively to make Pekin the vibrant, successful community it is today.
