Recruitment For over 75 years, the Portage County Business Council (PCBC) has been the hub of business activity in Portage County, providing support and a voice for the local business community. Serving as the chamber of commerce and the economic development arm of the community, the PCBC is actively engaged in recruiting new businesses to the area, connecting its membership with expanding opportunities, and offering career strengthening tools for area students and professionals. Working in concert with local municipalities and regional economic development agencies, the PCBC promotes the area to prospective businesses and helps to smooth the path for businesses locating in Portage County. One of the latest tools that the Council has utilized to accomplish this is the Location One Information System. LOIS showcases available industrial and commercial properties in the area on the Business Council website,
allowing a prospective business to quickly find the best potential buildings and sites for its enterprise and to connect with the broker.

Community Life The communities of Portage County can make the good life your new standard of living. BY JAY NEHRKORN
NaNCy dolCe, dolCe digital imagiNg & PriNtiNg “Living in Stevens Point provides an abundance of opportunities and activities found in a large city with the warmth of a small town.” kathy davies, ameriCaN red Cross of Portage CouNty “I can’t say that I’m a Portage County native, but after 25 years, this is home. This is where we raised our children, made lifelong friends, and became a part of a community of truly caring people. I can’t imagine a better place anywhere!” diCk okray, okray family farms “What I like best about Plover is the people … a small-town commitment to keeping our community friendly and easygoing. People here are never afraid to chat, and they love to keep it real! I’m always welcome and at home in Plover.”
Stevens Point – Highly Praised Hub of Portage County www.stevenspoint.com
Stevens Point combines safe, family-friendly neighborhoods with the vibrancy of a college town. The presence of quality school districts, Mid-State Technical College, and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point have made this city of over 25,000 an important educational hub. The historic downtown area is accessible via a public transit system and has a variety of shopping and entertainment options. Social activity includes cultural, athletic, and churchaffiliated events. Parks and natural areas such as Schmeeckle Reserve and Green Circle Trail also add quality of life for outdoor enthusiasts.
Accolades for Stevens Point continue to roll in. In 2009, the community was listed in both CNNMoney.com’s “25 Best Places to Retire” and Relocate-America’s “Top 100 Places to Live.”

Located south of Stevens Point, the Village of Plover has grown from just 2,618 residents when it was incorporated in 1971 to a current population of nearly 12,000. The community’s growth, as well as a skilled workforce with an average household income above the state average, has attracted a growing number of retailers and made it a popular shopping destination. Parks and trails near expanding residential areas provide opportunities for youth sports and outdoor activities such as picnicking, hiking, and biking.

Straddling the banks of the Tomorrow River and surrounded by the natural beauty of rural Wisconsin, the scenic Village of Amherst is surprisingly independent for a community of only 1,000 residents. Medical services, groceries, banking, dining, and most other necessities are readily available within Amherst’s small-town atmosphere. The Village has a municipal library, a community center, a school district, and even its own tree nursery. Several industrial businesses call Amherst home, and the Village has a developing business park.

Chuck Nason, Worzalla Publishing Company “The late K. B. Willett probably said it best when he said that Stevens Point is a great place to live and to work, to pray and to play, and to retire. Ken knew what attracts and retains lifelong residents to this area: quality of life, a strong work ethic, great friends, and a family environment to last a lifetime. Being raised and educated in Stevens Point and then returning here to work and raise my own family … to be candid, it simply doesn’t get any better than this!” Sue Wilcox, United Way of Portage County “What makes Portage County such an amazing place to live and work is our enduring commitment to caring for others. When the needs in our community are great, the generosity and compassion of this community is even greater. Together, we can overcome challenges and build a brighter future for us all.”

Business & Industry A dedication to quality, stability, and its own natural heritage makes Portage County — and the state of Wisconsin — a great place to do business. BY RALPH LOOS
WisCoNsiN’s busiNess Climate • Wisconsin is an international trade leader. Wisconsin recorded a 1.86 percent increase in exports, compared to a 5.17 percent national decline. • Wisconsin is tops in education. Wisconsin ranks as the sixthsmartest state, according to Morgan Quitno Press. Wisconsin high school seniors topped the nation in ACT scores for the seventh straight year, and the state has the nation’s third-lowest dropout rate (U.S. Department of Education). • Wisconsin offers a topnotch quality of life. Wisconsin was ranked the 11th-most-livable state and the 10thsafest state by Morgan Quitno Press. (continued on page 10)
delTa denTal oF WisConsin: Delta Dental of Wisconsin, a not-for-profit dental insurance corporation, is the largest dental benefits provider in the state. Part of the national Delta Dental Plans Association, which has operations in all 50 states, Delta Dental of Wisconsin pioneered the association’s technology-based claims processing service. Recognized in 2008 by Corporate Report Wisconsin among its “Best of Wisconsin Businesses,” Delta Dental of Wisconsin has its headquarters in Stevens Point.
Central Wisconsin Benefits Business Technology and industry in Central Wisconsin benefit from the area’s commitment to economic development and an exceptional education system, including Mid-State Technical College and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The UWSP Small Business Development Center is key in helping new businesses get started in the region and existing businesses make decisions that help them grow and prosper. Businesses in Central Wisconsin also benefit from the region’s close proximity to major urban areas — Chicago, Madison, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Green Bay are each within a half-day’s drive. But there are several more reasons business and industry leaders choose Portage County and the surrounding area: • Central Wisconsin has a dedicated and skilled workforce.
• The region has one of the lowest cost of living indices in the country. • UW-Stevens Point ranks consistently in the Top 10 Public Universities in the Midwest, according to U.S. News and World Report.
Growing Industries Once dominated by the paper industry, Central Wisconsin has diversified and become a prime destination for companies in the technology, environmental, health care, and manufacturing fields. Statewide, wind energy is a growing industry. Wisconsin manufacturers produce and supply more than 7,000 components required to make a wind turbine. Wisconsin is also a leader in the plastics industry. The emerging medical devices sector is a big part of Wisconsin’s biotechnology and health care sectors.
Wisconsin is among the top 15 states in industrial production. Wisconsin ranks third nationally in the percentage of total jobs in manufacturing (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
Of course, the stalwarts of Central Wisconsin’s economy are the agriculture, food processing, and forest product industries. Wisconsin’s forest product industry employs more than 70,000 people, while Wisconsin’s dairy business generates a much greater economic impact than the citrus industry in Florida and the potato industry in Idaho.
Business Resources Businesses looking for assistance with a business plan or meeting a specific challenge will find plenty of resources. Along with the UWSP Small Business Development Center, CAP Services, and SCORE are willing to help. Wisconsin Department of Commerce The Wisconsin Department of Commerce was established in 1996 through the consolidation of various independent state organizations. It provides development assistance in areas such as marketing, business and community finance, exporting, small business advocacy, and manufacturing assessments.
The department also issues professional credentials for the construction trades and administers safety and building codes. Commerce also regulates petroleum products and tank systems and administers the Petroleum Environmental Clean-up Fund. Commerce’s vision is to make Wisconsin the best place to live and do business. Its mission is to drive retention and creation of quality jobs and promote safe, healthy communities. CAP Services CAP Services has been on the front line of the war on poverty since 1966. As a private, nonprofit corporation, CAP offers programs in five Wisconsin counties, including Portage County. Nearly three dozen programs are offered through four departments at CAP, helping people attain economic and emotional selfsufficiency. CAP divisions include Human Development, Housing, Business Development, and Early Childhood Development.

Conservation When it comes to Central Wisconsin’s natural heritage, several area organizations and entities work with business and industry to protect and celebrate the beautiful landscape. • The Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame, located in Stevens Point, is a nonprofit comprised of two dozen Wisconsin conservation-related organizations. Inductees into the Hall of Fame are honored for their work on conservation programs and projects, along with conservation ethics.
• The Midwest Renewable Energy Association promotes renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable living through education and demonstration. Along with its annual Energy Fair, the MREA hosts a series of educational and hands-on workshops throughout the year. Participants come from varied backgrounds, including homeowners, builders, educators, architects, engineers, and others. • Travel Green Wisconsin is a voluntary program that reviews, certifies, and recognizes tourism businesses and organizations that have made a commitment to reducing their environmental impact. Specifically, the program encourages participants to evaluate their operations, set goals, and take specific actions towards environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
Travel Guard: America’s leading travel insurance provider to leisure and business travelers, Travel Guard was founded by John M. Noel, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. In July 2009, the company held a ribbon-cutting for its new world headquarters in Stevens Point. The 125,000-square-foot facility, home to approximately 600 employees, was carefully planned to be environmentally responsible and has received LEED® certification for sustainable building. “Our new headquarters provides further evidence that Travel Guard’s roots are firmly planted in Central Wisconsin for a long time to come,” said Travel Guard President and CEO Dean Sivley.

Homes in Portage County cover a broad spectrum of styles and sizes.

mayor aNdreW halversoN, City of steveNs PoiNt “The City of Stevens Point offers a variety of housing options that will suit the needs of people of all ages. R
ent or buy? Vintage or new? City or rural? Finding the right home starts with questions that have very personal answers. Thankfully, Portage County’s diverse housing mix answers “yes” to any domestic need.
Buying? With a median home cost of $131,400 (3Q2009, Wisconsin Realtors Association) as well as a wide range of affordable leasing prices, the county’s residential living options provide excellent value for any housing budget. Single-family homes in Portage County cover a broad spectrum. The average selling price in 2009 was around $143,000, which has the purchasing power for a comfortable three-bedroom home with a two-car garage
on a half-acre parcel. For something a little larger and more upscale, the Stevens Point and Plover area market includes spacious three- and four-bedroom executive homes starting at around $350,000. Buyers researching the county’s historic homes will be interested in reviewing Houses That Grew by Wendell Nelson, which features 200 of the area’s finest vintage houses. Representing the Victorian, Prairie, and Federal Revival styles, these homes vary widely in price based on both their size and condition.
Renting? The colleges and growth within Portage County have produced a strong demand for apartments, and the market has

responded with variety. Single-bedroom apartments run the gamut from small starters at around $400 per month to roomy luxury units for up to $1,000. The Windsor Apartments in Plover combine a neighborhood environment with amenities like personal garages, a pool, a fitness room, and a unique community room. For students looking to share space and divide rent, University Point Apartments offer spacious, energy-efficient units with two, three, or four bedrooms and nice amenities that average around $420 per bedroom. Need assistance finding an apartment? The Central Wisconsin Apartment Association (CWAA) is a great place to start. Log in to www.CWAAonline.org.
Retiring? The Stevens Point area also has a number of quality assisted-living communities to help seniors find the right balance of independence and support based on their individual needs, including short- and long-term care, 24-hour skilled nursing, hospice and respite care. For more information about available senior living communities, call the Aging & Disability Resource Center at 715-346-1405. Potential residents can inquire about financial assistance through Portage County’s Family Care program by calling 715-345-5968. H.B. “Butch” Pomeroy, International Bank of Amherst “Portage County largely avoided the housing crisis during the recession. We’re fortunate to have a diversified employment base here, and we didn’t see over-inflated real estate prices prior to the ‘bubble bursting,’ as in other parts of the country.” Pam Jewell, Blenker Companies Inc. “As a commercial and residential builder in Portage County for the past 35 years, I’ve seen tremendous growth and opportunity in our towns and villages … The sense of community and belonging here makes it easy to build homes that last a lifetime, and there’s no place like Portage County for peaceful subdivisions, convenient shopping, and outdoor living.”

Sentry Insurance and Stevens Point Area Public Schools Put Technology in Students’ Laps By eLIZaBeth SteeLe, teChNoLoGy INteGratIoN SPeCIaLISt, SPaPSD
Last year, Sentry Insurance Foundation, Inc., expressed a desire to help improve the technology skills of Stevens Point graduates entering the workforce. After exploring opportunities with the Stevens Point Area Public School District, the foundation offered to financially support a program that would supply a laptop computer to students entering the ninth grade. The aim of the resulting Sentry Insurance Foundation 1:1 Laptop Initiative is to provide equitable student access to technology and to help create educational experiences that integrate technology into learning. These tools and experiences will not only help students meet the performance
standards for technology literacy set by No Child Left Behind and the Department of Public Instruction, but will also help prepare students for their future role in the highly competitive, technological, and global 21st century. With a goal of ensuring that the main rollout of laptops to ninth-graders was as successful as possible, the initiative’s first stage of implementation included a pilot program and professional development for ninth-grade teachers. This initial four-part professional development provided teachers with tools and technology-rich opportunities to empower students to be technological and academic lifelong learners. In the next step of the project, which began in January 2010, laptops were rolled out to all ninth-grade students and also to 10th-grade teachers who participated in the initiative’s professional development to be ready for their laptop-savvy students in 2010–11.

SPACS Families and Parishes Improve Learning Conditions … in Iraq By Jay Nehrkorn
Stevens Point Area Catholic Schools (SPACS) has always been blessed with parents who take an interest in the education of their children, but in 2009, one of those families also took an interest in the education of children on the other side of the world. The result was a project that rallied the district, helped Iraqi children learn, and taught students at SPACS a valuable lesson in caring for others. Thanks to the WIA program, John Slusser is building a new career at Mid-State Technical College’s Stevens Point campus.
Some might say that John Slusser suffered a job loss in 2009 due to the downturn in the economy. While it’s true that he was laid off from his 13-year factory job, his positive attitude about the situation makes “suffered” a poor choice of words. While many newly unemployed people might focus on what to do to just survive, Slusser asked himself what he could do to thrive. Thanks to the WIA

program, he’s now an accounting student at Mid-State Technical College’s Stevens Point campus, and instead of building walls, he’s building a new career. In some ways, Slusser sees his layoff as the push he needed to move forward. “Sometimes things just have a way of working out,” he said. “As long as I had a steady income, I wouldn’t have walked away from [my former job]. I’ve always said that maybe someday I would go back to school. Well, now that ‘someday’ has arrived, I’m glad to be here.” Despite the fact that he’s nearly 15 years removed from his last school experience, 33-year-old Slusser feels comfortable in the MSTC environment. He finds himself in the middle of the age range in his classes and says that instructors have all been helpful and easy to talk to. In fact, rather than being anxious about college, he thinks he is better equipped now than ever to succeed in higher education — and his grades thus far confirm it. “My life experience in the last 15 years has given me the confidence to do this,” he explained. Slusser chose accounting because his analytical thought process is suited for it and because it’s a skill universally needed throughout all business sectors. The versatility his degree will give him is worth the effort, and he’s determined not to leave school without it, regardless of what happens. “I’ve waited 13 years to get a degree, and I’m sticking it out.”

UWSP-Community Partnership Creates a Local Landmark By UWSP Staff
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point enjoys many connections with the Stevens Point and Central Wisconsin communities, and among the more visible examples of this commitment is a recently installed sculpture on the city’s east side. Inspired by the community slogan “The Gateway to the Pineries,” the work, titled Ascension, is the creation of 12 UWSP students. It stands in front of The Pineries Bank on Main Street. Completed in 2009, Ascension resulted from a partnership between the bank and its president, UWSP Alumnus Paul Adamski; other community donors; and UWSP Professor Bill McKee’s sculpture class. Half of the sculpture class was made up of non-traditional students, including retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant Michael Butcher, a Stevens Point resident who was integral in designing the piece and overseeing the manufacture of its steel columns. Depicting outstretched wings of metal and wood, Ascension was crafted from local, historic materials, including reclaimed hemlock timbers from the former Lullaby Factory and fieldstones from local farms. Local metalcrafters, engineers, and construction companies also contributed their services to its creation. At the sculpture’s unveiling, Adamski announced that The Pineries Bank created an endowment that not only funds art student scholarships at UWSP, but also strengthens the bonds between businesses and higher education in Stevens Point.
UWSP sculpture students and Professor Bill McKee join The Pineries Bank President Paul Adamski at the spring 2009 dedication of Ascension at the bank’s branch on Main Street in Stevens Point.

A
long with providing care, the health care industry is a major employer, providing jobs for thousands of professionals and support staff. And when it comes to quality, the hospitals, specialty clinics, and physician services found in Portage County are second to none.
Saint Michael’s Hospital Ministry Health Care Ministry Health Care, a leading network of hospitals, clinics, and other health-related organizations, provides residents of Central Wisconsin with options for health care — and more. For example, the Ministry Health Care Fund provides monies for special projects within the communities of Central Wisconsin. All organizations sponsored or co-sponsored by Ministry Health Care set aside funds each year to assist with the needs of the community and those less fortunate. As the Ministry Health Care Fund, these dollars are funneled back into our communities for a variety of programs and services through a community assets and needs assessment process. Each hospital evaluates the many needs in its service area and selects one or more projects to fund. Over the years, Ministry Health Care Fund projects have targeted a cross-section of community members and a host of health care issues. From diabetes management programs, to blood pressure screenings, to free clinics that provide care for the uninsured and underinsured, Ministry Health Care is reaching out to those in need. It is our hope that through these projects, as well as our other community service activities, we can help people to help themselves.
An arm of Ministry Health Care, SAINTS Health Services for Business provides comprehensive, integrated occupational health services to business and industry. A range of occupational health services includes drug and alcohol testing, injury management, industrial rehabilitation, and the promotion of health and wellness. SAINTS offers in-clinic care placement of on-site health care professionals and a drive-up mobile test van that’s available to businesses.
Marshfield Clinic With a major presence in Wisconsin, Marshfield Clinic provides nearly 800 physicians in 80 medical specialties throughout the state. The clinic is renowned for its numerous medical and service innovations, along with its accessibility to the people of Central Wisconsin. Flexibility has been a key part of the clinic’s philosophy for nearly 90 years. Planning is a continuous process, enabling Marshfield Clinic to provide for patient needs in the most effective way. This philosophy allows Marshfield Clinic to thrive and expand in the rapidly changing climate of health services delivery. Outside of medical preventive and care practices, the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation conducts research on health care and public health, including clinical research, rural and agricultural health and safety, human genetics, epidemiology, and biomedical informatics. Medical training is also part of the Marshfield Clinic’s value to the region’s health care industry. The Clinic’s Education Foundation offers residency programs for recent

medical school graduates in internal medicine, pediatrics, dermatology, and surgery. An integral part of health care delivery at Marshfield Clinic is the Outreach Services program. Currently, there are more than 1,200 hospitals, clinics, and other sites participating in a variety of outreach programs originating from the clinic. Examples of the services provided include off-site physician consultation, 24-hour EKG interpretation via computer, mobile echocardiography, reference laboratory, regional blood banking, radiology, EEGs, orthotics/prosthetics, radiation physics, pulmonary function, and biomedical electronics.
Aspirus Aspirus, a nonprofit, community-directed health system, consists of 350 physicians with 48 specialties practicing in four regional hospitals. Included in the mix are emergency care services, rehabilitation services, behavioral health providers, durable medical equipment, and home health care. Aspirus employs more than 4,000 people and serves Wisconsin residents through a series of affiliated hospitals, home health care, pharmacies, hospice care, critical care, and helicopter transport service. It also contains a durable medical goods company, a nursing home, an affiliated physician network, a philanthropic and research foundation, and an extensive clinics network. The clinics network is made up of more than 35 community clinics and 150 providers that provide high-quality, accessible health care to a growing number of communities in Central Wisconsin. The specialists are involved in family medicine, OB/GYN, internal medicine, pediatrics, and urgent care. All health care professionals provided by Aspirus are dedicated to preventing, diagnosing, and treating illnesses and disease.
National Wellness Institute The Stevens Point-based National Wellness Institute was formed to provide health promotion and wellness professionals’ resources and services. The Institute annually hosts the National Wellness Conference, the premier professional health and wellness conference. The event draws more than 1,000 wellness professionals for a week of wellness immersion in programs, activities, and entertainment. The conference draws from every facet of health and wellness promotion, including worksite wellness, government agencies/community outreach, education, and health care.
