a city that lives in two centuries at once.
By M.D. Edmondson walked down the snowy streets of Ste. Genevieve and was taken back to a time when cars didn’t traverse the narrow, crooked streets. It was February, and the bitter wind reminded me of the lightness of my woolen jacket. People were outside, sipping hot cups of coffee or sweeping mounds of snow away from the entrances of their businesses. Their modern dress, an overcoat and hat, mirrored images on display of bygone days. The eve-
ning light cast everything in a hazy gray tone. The only sound noticeable was the slight patter of falling snow. Warm yellow light from brightly lit merchant buildings beckoned me to enter. Gently swirling steam rose from dinner plates. People laughed and joked, or sat peacefully and gazed out the windows at passersby. Suddenly, a misdirected snowball arched silently across the road. Laughs of children reverberated between the buildings as a hearty
winter war raged on a side street. I rushed over and saw a man in his 70s with a wellmaintained gray beard. He eyed the battle for a moment, then balled up a handful of snow. With a smile, he lobbed it into the fray. The children retaliated by quickly coating him with snow. Laughing, he surrendered and walked away. It was Ste. Genevieve, 2008. But it could have been 1800.

the history of ste. genevieve

By M.D. Edmondson te. Genevieve residents widely considered 1785 to be a bad year. That’s the year the Mighty Mississippi left its banks and swept the little town off the map. Though the flood was disastrous — river barges are said to have tied up to the chimneys of houses — the town didn’t fair as badly as Kaskaskia, Ill., a few miles south. Not only did Kaskaskia get swept under, but the Mississippi River altered its course and isolated the hapless town from the rest of Illinois. Despite past and future floods, the 1785 flood remains legendary all over the region. But life went on for Ste. Genevieve. Once the water receded from “Le Grand Champ,” or “The Big Field,” where the town used to be, residents moved about two miles north to re-establish the town between the forks of Gabouri Creek. The cedar construction of the houses stayed intact, and many of these homes were simply uprooted and moved. At the time, Ste. Genevieve belonged to Spain, having been given to the country following the French and Indian War. All of France’s holdings west of the Mississippi remained under the Spanish flag until 1800, when Napoleon took the territories back and, strapped for cash, sold them to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. But throughout the changes in nationality, Ste. Genevieve held strongly to its French heritage. Some of the first “poteaux-en-terre” houses, named for a construction technique
where a house is built upon posts sunk in the ground without a foundation, still stand. This early French Colonial design mixes well with the later French Colonial, German, and American designs that dot the historic district of Ste. Genevieve. Three of five remaining poteaux-en-terre houses stand in Ste. Genevieve. These houses were built around the time of the initial founding of Ste. Genevieve, thought to be somewhere around 1740. Some historians claim a settlement was established around 1722. Others say it was later — perhaps 1750. A census proves that the village was settled by at least 1752. The sign at the city limits says 1735, as does a plaque on the Missouri Capitol. Ste. Genevieve celebrated its bicentennial in 1935. Regardless of the exact date, Ste. Genevieve is still the oldest European settlement in Missouri and one of the oldest west of the Mississippi River. After Ste. Genevieve was officially turned over to the new American government in 1804, the rough-and-tumble Americans came — literally by the boatload — and brought with them their culture. A public school was installed in 1807. Pistol duels were fought in 1811 and 1816. Jesse James purportedly robbed the bank in 1873. John James Audubon, the famed naturalist, tried to be a businessman here with his friend Jean Rozier. Rozier succeeded, and his family name is still attached to area storefronts. Audubon, however, spent more time
sketching the natural beauty of the land than he did working at the store. His appreciation for nature didn’t go for naught, though. Audubon’s name is still synonymous with the preservation of forests and the animals that call them home. The history of Ste. Genevieve doesn’t start with Europeans. Arrowheads from humans who hunted giant mammoths are scattered across Ste. Genevieve County. Cahokia, which existed across the river from present-day St. Louis, had as many as 40,000 people living in it before Europeans even dreamed of a land across the sea. Much of that history has been lost. When Europeans arrived, there was a village established in Kaskaskia, but other than a few rumors and theories, nobody really knows what went on around Ste. Genevieve before the Europeans showed up. But evidence left behind shows people were here during the last ice age, more than 10,000 years ago.

“The treasure trove of French Colonial life preserved in Ste. Genevieve provides an incomparable look into the pioneer spirit of the early settlers. History truly comes alive in this vital town, and its Gallic charm beckons you to amble through the streets and journey back in time. Richard Moe, President National Trust for Historic Preservation
Ste. Genevieve’s modern history won’t be forgotten. Unlike many old Midwestern towns, Ste. Genevieve didn’t knock down its old houses in favor of progress. Some of the nation’s most significant architecture exists behind garden fences along narrow, winding streets. Modern conveniences have been added, but the façade of the old town remains the same. Unlike some cities that attempt to improvise a heritage and culture by constructing brick sidewalks and putting up streetlamps, everything here that looks historic actually is historic. There are no reproductions of anything. Progress — factories, fast food restaurants, and the things we expect in a modern small city — is relegated to the outskirts of town, where modern success exists happily with the success and beauty of bygone days.

Private and Parochial Schools Valle Catholic 40 N. Fourth St. Ste. Genevieve, MO 63670 573-883-7496 • www.valleschools.org
Serving grades PreK through 12, Valle Catholic is a co-ed school within the Archdiocesan School System. Serving the counties of Ste. Genevieve and St. Francois, the school focuses on educating young men and women for Christian leadership. Catholic education has a long history in Ste. Genevieve. The parish, founded in 1759, is the oldest recorded parish in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. The Christian Brothers opened a school for boys in the early 1800s, while the Sisters of Loretto opened a school for girls in 1837. In 1925, the Sisters of St. Joseph started a high school, and in 1954, a new school building, which today houses both grade school and high school students, was erected. A devoted lay faculty and staff continues the celebrated tradition of Valle Catholic. Grade school students receive a thorough academic grounding supplemented by technology and music programs. The Christian values of charity and community service are taught; in 2007–08, students participated in clothing drives, hospital visits, Catholic Relief fundraisers, and recycling events. Students also receive
instruction and preparation for Confirmation. Participation in scholarly and athletic competition is encouraged, and students may participate in Spanish Club, drama, student council, and Valle FBI (Friendly Business, Inc.). High school students of all ability levels receive an excellent education at Valle Catholic. A comprehensive curriculum includes college credit, college preparatory, and career education courses. Religious instruction continues at this level, and students in 2007–08 offered community service through blood drives, yard and garden work, fundraisers for Special Olympics and the library, and visits to seniors. The Academic Team is successful in regional events. Students can also choose to participate in band, cheerleading, choir, dance, drama, National Honor Society, Pro-Life Group, student council, and Team Spirit. The Valle Warriors field teams in football, volleyball, boys’ and girls’ basketball, baseball, golf, and track. The parish offers ongoing financial support through the Valle Schools Foundation. Over the past 12 years, the foundation has contributed over $2.2 million to support Valle, including $141,336 for the 2007–08 school year. An active alumni group meets regularly. You’ll find state-of-the-art facilities in ste. genevieve to address all your medical needs.
By Andrew Hagler
Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital 800 Ste. Genevieve Drive, P.O. Box 468, Ste. Genevieve 573-883-2751 • www.stegenevievehospital.org
Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital — Always There for You As medical emergencies and health care changes affect our lives it’s easy to feel lost, but isn’t it nice to know there’s someone close to home you can trust? When faced with tough decisions about your family’s health care, count on the dedicated professionals at your community hospital, Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital (SGCMH). Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital is a nonprofit, county-owned, modern community hospital with a highly trained staff, advanced medical technology, and personable care. The hospital received Critical Access Hospital (CAH) designation in 2005 and is part of a system that includes a 120-bed nursing home, Riverviewat-the Park, and local physician practices. There are over 360 employees and a medical team comprised of 66 active, courtesy, and consulting physicians. Professional Staff The hospital’s cultural environment strongly supports its mission, becoming a key part in delivery of services to their most valuable asset — the patients. The staff is trained annually on the newest standards in health care delivery. They work tirelessly to combat illness, promote wellness, and advance medicine, working as a team to deliver high-quality care. 10
ste. genevieve area Chamber of CommerCe
A broad range of specialties is supported by the medical staff. In addition to general practitioners, specialists in obstetrics/gynecology, oncology, cardiology, general surgery, pediatrics, podiatry, ENT, and urology are available. Licensed social workers and respiratory and speech therapists are on staff, and the hospital offers home health, lab, occupational medicine, sleep studies, and diagnostic imaging services. To find a physician who’s right for you, just call the physician referral line. The Women’s Health and Childbirth Center has a highly qualified staff caring for newborns and parents. Family and friends are offered education and support throughout the birthing process. Nurses work one-on-one with mom and baby through the entire experience. All stages of childbirth occur in a private LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum) room. Mom and baby’s every need is anticipated, and pampering is a priority to make their experience a joyous occasion. Advanced Medical Technology Medical technology at the hospital is second to none in the area. Diagnostic Imaging offers a full range of equipment for physicians to diagnose various conditions and determine the best treatment. The advanced technology promotes innovation, faster diagnoses, and fewer complications. Imaging services include: • The sophisticated 64-slice CT scanner, with four times the resolution of a typical CT
scan, provides higher-quality imaging. Even better, it’s fast — it can scan your heart or brain in about five seconds. • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an advanced method that produces very clear pictures without the use of X-rays, allowing physicians to detect developing diseases or abnormalities sooner. • The Philips Brightview Spect nuclear medicine camera was designed from the ground up to put patients first. It’s newly designed, fast, and reliable. Also, the hospital offers other imaging opportunities such as ultrasound, mammography, and bone density. Technology and patient confidentiality are key priorities in health care, and Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital supports both initiatives. The hospital implemented an electronic medical records system (EMR) so patients have easy access and faster retrieval of their protected health information. EMR makes medical documents very portable and convenient and allows the entire health care team to coordinate care and securely view tests, medications, and so on online from nearly any location. Personable Care SGCMH works to provide patients with home comforts in their hospital environment. Private rooms are more comfortable, patients are less susceptible to disease transmission, and reduced room traffic means less stress and more rest, so many
patients have higher morale during their hospital stay. All rooms are spacious with a relaxing, new contemporary decor and wireless network capabilities for the patient’s family and friends. As communities grow, demand on hospital emergency rooms (ERs) has steadily increased. The hospital has expanded the ER to handle the rise in patient visits, which now number in excess of 5,000 per year. The new Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital ER expansion is a spacious 7,000 square feet with lots of modern features, such as new treatment and trauma rooms, a triage room, and a large waiting area. The hospital has also added a private consultation area, decontamination room, ATM machine, and a vending area. There are new, comfortable furnishings in the ER lobby and treatment rooms. It also houses five cardiac monitoring units and one central monitoring system, along with a new in-house MRI suite. The MRI and new 64-slice CT scanner are located adjacent to the ER to transfer patients for tests without going into public areas. Patient privacy, access, and flow are much enhanced. The nurses’ station is designed with exam rooms around it, and each room is equipped with the nurse call system. All visitors are greeted around the clock by staff, and for added comfort there are TVs in all rooms. SGCMH constantly seeks innovative ways to deliver exceptional care. Quality improvement measures monitor patient satisfaction, customer service, and quality of care. It maintains high quality care standards for inpatient and outpatient services, and the staff uses the same high standards for community outreach and partnerships. Community outreach and education programs include a kid’s club, childbirth classes, home alone, babysitting classes, an annual Women’s Health Fair, and a Diabetes Health Fair. The hospital supports community events and organizations, including the Ste.Genevieve Chamber and both school districts, and distributes a community newsletter. New residents are greeted with a hospital welcome packet. Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital makes life healthier for its community — healthier for you. With health care changing faster than we can keep up, isn’t it good to know your community hospital has what you need? Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital, helping you stay HEALTHY! A vital part of the city since its founding, the Catholic community has preserved documents that are among sources cited by Dr. Carl J. Ekberg in his book Colonial Ste. Genevieve to support his estimated date of 1750 for Ste. Genevieve’s founding.

Dining Local & Unique Anvil Saloon & Restaurant 46 S. Third St. • 573-883-7323
The Anvil Saloon & Restaurant was originally a hardware store that operated from 1850–1855. After being purchased by the Vaeth family, the building became a saloon in 1855. The bar and back bar were moved here by oxcart from a barge stuck in the sand that needed to lose some weight. Rather than sending the bar downstream as flotsam, it was brought into town. The Anvil Saloon stayed in the Vaeth family and served drinks until 1978. The building was then sold to the Abel family, who renovated it and today continues the 150-year-long tradition of serving drinks, now with a full menu that’s most famous for homemade onion rings. The Anvil Saloon & Restaurant is open seven days a week. China king 110 Plaza Square • 573-883-8188

Ste. Genevieve’s newest dining delight is Cowboy Pizza.
The Old Brick House is the oldest brick building west of the Mississippi River. Built in 1790, it is rumored that the bricks were brought over as ballast from French ships. In addition to a restaurant, the Old Brick House has served as a courthouse, school, and the site of a duel fought in 1816, in which Auguste DeMun, founder of New Bourbon, met his untimely demise. The Old Brick House is open seven days a week and serves a full menu with drinks. A daily lunch buffet is available.

One can’t imagine France without wineries spreading out across the countryside. It is therefore safe to assume that the French settlers of Ste. Genevieve brought with them their knowledge and passion for the ancient drink. The earliest settlers found the soil to be nearly identical to that of France — recent geological studies have proven this — and the region’s rolling hills and temperate climate made the land very conducive to growing grapes. Missouri winemaking has continued since the town’s early days. Descendents of the original winemakers still make wine at home, and many commercial wineries are open year-round to visitors.
