Welcome to Ste. Genevieve

F

ew cities can lay claim to such a long-standing and wonderfully preserved heritage as Ste. Genevieve. In fact, it is the only original French Colonial city remaining in the United States, and many of the early structures can still be seen and appreciated today. But embracing its rich history doesn’t make this city a place of the past. Beyond Ste. Genevieve’s historic core you’ll find progress that displays how the pioneering spirit of its earliest inhabitants lives on. Modern factories, stateof-the-art health care, a growing infrastructure and progressive educational institutions bear witness to the fact that this is a vibrant and sustainable city moving forward into a better tomorrow. Part of Ste. Genevieve’s charm is that it offers an escape from the hassles of big cities without a feeling of isolation. It’s a small-town environment where people know their neighbors and business owners know their local customers by name. Friendly neighborhoods and safe streets are a way of life here, yet many quaint shops and wonderful dining options are just around the corner. And all of this exists within easy driving distance of larger towns and less than an hour from the attractions of St. Louis and Cape Girardeau, making Ste. Genevieve a convenient place to find a carefree lifestyle without sacrificing access to anything you might desire. So bonjour! Bienvenue à Ste. Geneviève — welcome to our city of heritage and hope. We’re sure that once you experience the enchantment and warmth our town has to offer, you’ll want to return again and again. That is, of course, if you ever decide to leave at all.

Port of New Bourbon A Logical Logistical Boost

L

ocated on 72 acres three miles south of Ste. Genevieve, the Port of New Bourbon is an exciting economic development project that has been in the works for more than 30 years. Featuring a harbor plus a berthing and maintenance area for a ferry that travels from Modoc, Ill., to Ste. Genevieve, the $5 million port is expected to have a huge impact on the local economy. Officials in Perry and Ste. Genevieve counties created the New Bourbon Port Authority in 1982 and continue to work together to ensure the port will benefit the economies of both counties. Over the years funding and land have come from a variety of sources, including the Missouri Department of Transportation, the Delta Regional Authority, Ste. Genevieve Sand and Material, the cities of Perryville and Ste. Genevieve, and the two respective counties. The primary goal of the Port Authority has been to develop a public port

facility on the Mississippi River to serve businesses in Ste. Genevieve, Perry and surrounding counties and to provide the facilities to support manufacturing growth and job creation for residents of the area. A report compiled by the Southeast Missouri Regional Planning and Economic Development Commission estimated that initially 35 jobs directly related to the port would be created, with the potential for another 400 jobs in the future, as well as a variety of secondary jobs in retail, service and other sectors of the economy. Tom Greminger, president of the Ste. Genevieve Industrial Development Corporation, noted that the new port is attracting strong interest from companies considering relocation to the area. “We are getting calls from a variety of industries, including mining, sand operations and building materials, who wouldn’t have considered locating here without the new port access.”

Located 54 miles south of the St. Louis metro area, the port is three miles from U.S. Highway 61, nine miles from I-55 and 54 miles from I-270/255. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad main line is one mile from the port. The port will offer barge access to Chicago, Memphis, Gulf ports and ocean shipping services, with same-day truck service to St. Louis, Kansas City and Memphis and next-day truck service to Chicago, Atlanta and Dallas. Ron Inman, chairman of the New Bourbon Regional Port Authority, said the final phases of construction are nearing completion and the port will be operating by late summer or early fall. Plans are also underway to improve the access roads to the port.

Distinctively French

History of Ste. Genevieve

S

te. Genevieve was settled between 1735 and the late 1740s along the banks of the Mississippi River. Its earliest residents were French Canadians who farmed the rich, alluvial soil along the river, produced salt, mined lead and trapped furs. Anticipating the loss of the Seven Year War, France ceded all her holdings west of the Mississippi River to Spain in 1762. Despite the change to Spanish control, Ste. Genevieve retained its distinctive French character, culture and language. A disastrous flood in 1785 caused the relocation of the village to its present site. In 1800, France regained control of the area; however, with the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, the town’s French-speaking residents suddenly found themselves citizens of the United States. An influx of Americans soon left its mark on Ste. Genevieve as merchants, lawyers and entrepreneurs built American-style homes and businesses among the old French houses. Later, German immigrants in the mid-century left a legacy of charming brick homes and stores. Much of historic Ste. Genevieve’s charm is due to the preservation of features from the colonial settlement. Narrow streets and fenced gardens surround unique 18th-century French architecture. These buildings, with their vertical log walls and roofs supported by massive Norman trusses, are based on traditional architectural

styles originating from Normandy, France, and French Canada. Ste. Genevieve is home to three of the five very rare poteaux en terre (post in the ground) houses left in America. Today, Ste. Genevieve’s National Landmark Historic District offers visitors unique glimpses into the era when France and Spain ruled the mid-Mississippi Valley, as well as insights into the town’s transition to an American city with a distinctly French heritage.

HISTORIC ATTRACTIONS Beauvais-Amoureux House

327 St. Mary’s Road...................... 573-883-7102

The Beauvais-Amoureux House was built circa 1792 by Jean Baptiste St. Gemme Beauvais overlooking le grand champ, the agricultural fields of Ste. Genevieve. Its upright cedar log walls are set directly in the earth, in the rare poteauxen-terre method of construction. Heavy, hewn timbers form the Norman truss, which supports the steeply pitched roof, reminiscent of French Canada. Purchased by Benjamin Amoureux in 1852, the house is now part of the Felix Vallé State Historic Site. An impressive diorama depicting the village of Ste. Genevieve in 1832 is featured at the Beauvais-Amoureux site.

Bequette-Ribault House 351 St. Mary’s Road

Similar in construction to the BeauvaisAmoureux House, this French Creole home was built by Jean Baptiste Bequette in the 1780s.

I

t came as no surprise to most residents when Budget Travel named Ste. Genevieve one of the “10 Coolest Small Towns in America” in 2012. With a population of 4,410 and boasting a quaint downtown that pays homage to its French Colonial heritage, Ste. Genevieve combines small-town ambience and friendliness with gorgeous scenery and the convenience of nearby shopping and dining. Located just a one-hour drive south of St. Louis, Ste. Genevieve County has a growing population of over 18,000, drawn by an outstanding quality of life. Families moving to the area find the Ste. Genevieve R-II School District offers students personalized attention with smaller class sizes, technology-enhanced classrooms and strong support from the community for ongoing improvements. The cost of living and commute time to work are lower than the national average, and buying a home in the county is remarkably affordable compared to many other areas of the country. Buyers have a wide range of houses to choose from, including historic homes downtown and contemporary homes with the latest in-demand amenities within recently built subdivisions. According to Ron Armbruster of Armbruster Realty, homes in the Ste. Genevieve 8

area range from $65,000 for a small starter home to $375,000 for a custom-built threebedroom, three-bath home on lakefront property. Homebuyers are often surprised by the diversity of styles available. “There is something for every taste and budget,” Armbruster said. “We have historic homes in a variety of prices, depending on the condition, and there are many well-maintained homes from 10 to 50 years old in the $95,000 to $250,000 range.” Reasonably priced older homes needing some TLC frequently go on the market and are a good investment for buyers with the time and patience to undertake a restoration or remodel. Buyers seeking retirement and vacation homes will find properties with easy access to the golf course or lake, while for those seeking more acreage, rural homes a short drive from town offer gorgeous scenery and large tracts for farms. Newer homes are available at Sunset Ridge Estates in Bloomsdale, Valle Spring Estates in Ste. Genevieve and Zell Country Club Village. Lake Forest Estates, a subdivision just west of I-55, offers lakefront properties and a host of amenities that includes a swimming pool, playgrounds and lighted tennis courts. Lake Forest homes start at $125,000 and range up to $400,000 for

upscale models. Offering an impressive choice of spacious duplex villas, single-family residences, or construction-ready lots with acreage and convenient golf course access, Zell Country Club Village has opportunities to buy or build starting at $180,000. Constructed between 1876 and 1879, the beautiful STE. GENEVIEVE CATHOLIC CHURCH was built on the site of a log church believed to have been built circa 1754. A vital part of the city since its founding, the Catholic community has preserved documents that are among sources cited by Dr. Carl J. Ekberg in his book Colonial Ste. Genevieve to support his estimated date of 1750 for Ste. Genevieve’s founding.

ndividuals and families seeking a place to worship will find a varied and welcoming religious community in Ste. Genevieve. Though the city itself and the surrounding area have a strong Catholic presence as part of a historic French heritage, the region is also home to many Protestant and non-denominational congregations that offer fellowship and work together to serve the spiritual needs of the community.
