Welcome to Ste. Genevieve

Escape to the warmth of this historic and progressive city. estled within the scenic bluffs and rolling agricultural lands along the mighty Mississippi River, the city of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, is truly a place of pleasant contrasts. It’s a place to celebrate American history while reaching for a bright future; a place of rural, small-town charms that offers modern convenience and infrastructure; an excellent location to visit for a weekend, or to reside for a lifetime. Few cities can lay claim to such a longstanding and wonderfully preserved heritage as Ste. Genevieve. In fact, it is the only original French Colonial city remaining in the United States, and many of the early structures can still be seen and appreciated today. But embracing its rich history doesn’t make this city a place of the past. Beyond Ste. Genevieve’s historic core you’ll find progress that displays how the pioneering spirit of its earliest inhabitants lives on. Modern factories, state-of-the-art health care, and progressive educational institutions bear witness to

the fact that this is a vibrant and sustainable city moving forward into a better tomorrow. Part of Ste. Genevieve’s charm is that it offers an escape from the hassles of big cities without a feeling of isolation. It’s a small-town environment where people know their neighbors and business owners know their local customers by name. Friendly neighborhoods and safe streets are a way of life here, yet many quaint shops and wonderful dining options are just around the corner. And all of this exists within easy driving distance of larger towns and less than an hour from the attractions of St. Louis and Cape Girardeau, making Ste. Genevieve a convenient place to find a care-free lifestyle without sacrificing access to anything you might desire. So bonjour! Bienvenue à Ste. Geneviève — welcome to our city of heritage and hope. We’re sure that once you experience the enchantment and warmth our town has to offer, you’ll want to return again and again. That is, of course, if you ever decide to leave at all.

erched on the west bank of the Mississippi River, the village of Ste. Genevieve was settled in the late 1740s approximately two miles south of its present location. The village was one of several important French communities forming a region known as the “Illinois Country,” part of the vast territory held by France in North America at the time. Many of Ste. Genevieve’s earliest residents were FrenchCanadian habitants who farmed the rich, alluvial soil adjacent to the village and produced salt and lead from nearby creeks and mines. Major events impacted Ste. Genevieve when, in 1762 at the close of the French and Indian War, France ceded all her holdings west of the Mississippi River to Spain. Despite the transfer and new Spanish government in the region, Ste. Genevieve retained its distinctive French character and language. A disastrous flood in 1785 triggered the gradual relocation of the village to higher ground between the forks of Gabouri Creek, the site of present-day Ste. Genevieve. Much of historic Ste. Genevieve’s charm and ambience is due to the remarkable preservation of the features of that colonial settlement. Narrow streets and fenced gardens surround some of the most significant 18th-century architecture in America. These French Colonial

buildings were constructed from massive logs, hewn and set vertically to form the walls of the home. Heavy timbers were mortised and pegged into sturdy trusses that supported the impressive hipped roof covering the house and its wide porches. Fascinating variations of this architectural style, known as poteaux-en-terre and poteaux-sur-sole, are found in the historic homes of colonial Ste. Genevieve, as well as in Quebec and Normandy. Historians and architects continue to study these buildings’ true links with our French Colonial past. As the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 propelled Ste. Genevieve into another chapter in history, its French-speaking residents suddenly found themselves citizens of the United States. Soon the rush of Americans into the Louisiana Territory left its mark in Ste. Genevieve. Merchants, lawyers, and entrepreneurs settled in the village, building their homes and businesses among the old French houses, creating the delightful mix of early 19th-century architecture found today. German immigrants in the mid 19th century left a legacy of charming brick homes and stores throughout the community. Today Ste. Genevieve’s National Landmark Historic District offers visitors an unparalleled glimpse into its Colonial past. Its residents join together to preserve and interpret this most remarkable community.

Housing

Variety, value, and charm are hallmarks of Ste. Genevieve’s diverse housing market. te. Genevieve is renowned for its historic structures, but the area has much more to offer potential residents than just its French Colonial charm. Inviting neighborhoods and beautiful scenery add to the appeal, as do convenient shopping and dining choices. The county also offers a cost of living that is below the national average by more than 20 percent, making affordability another of its strengths. All of these things make Ste. Genevieve County an attractive place to live, but for people in the process of relocating, finding a particular property that suits their personality and budget is just as important. Thankfully, Ste. Genevieve shines through again with a surprising array of options to satisfy the needs of home buyers. According to Ron Armbruster of Armbruster Realty, the greatest strength of the area’s housing market lies in its diversity.

8

Ste. Genevieve Area Chamber of Commerce

“Ste. Genevieve offers a wide variety of housing options,” Armbruster explains, “from historic homes to modern subdivisions, from golf course living to lakeside living, and from the small-town environment to country settings.” As one might expect in such a history-rich town, Ste. Genevieve’s housing mix includes a number of historic homes that vary greatly in price, size, and condition. But historic homes are just the beginning. Home buyers will also find that the city has more recent homes that provide ample space at an exceptional value, including many well-maintained family homes from 10 to 50 years of age within the $85,000 to $150,000 range. Those seeking brand-new homes or a place to build will find what they’re looking for in Ste. Genevieve’s subdivisions. The newest options include the spacious lots of Sunset Ridge Estates

in Bloomsdale and Ste. Genevieve’s 95-lot Valle Springs Estates, which already contains over 65 permanent residences. Another great option is Zell Country Club Village, which offers spacious duplex villas, single-family residences, and construction-ready lots up to an acre in size. Zell provides easy access to the golf course, with an entry level to buy or build at around $185,000. Not to be overlooked is Lake Forest Estates, a restricted covenant subdivision with beautiful lakefront properties just west of I-55. Beyond convenient lake access, this community has many other amenities such as a swimming pool, playgrounds, and lighted tennis courts. Lake Forest includes a broad spectrum of family homes starting as low as $125,000 and ranging up to spacious, upscale homes in the $400,000 neighborhood.

The new, 25,000-square-foot Surgical Hospital is directly across the street from Jefferson Regional Medical Center. It’s another example of continued excellence for inpatient and outpatient surgery patients. “It’s a fantastic facility that is ready to meet the needs of our community,” says Pam Pearch, R.N., director of surgical services. “Our mission is to provide the best surgical services possible and streamline care, so our patients can quickly return to enjoying a fuller and richer life.” In addition to four operating rooms and two endoscopy rooms, the Surgical Hospital features 15 private patient rooms — each with a private bathroom. “The Surgical Hospital is an excellent choice for same-day surgery patients and those who require a short stay in the hospital,” Pearch says. “We also have the capabilities to comfortably

Worship Historic Ste. Genevieve Catholic Church: Constructed between 1876 and 1879, the beautiful Ste. Genevieve Catholic Church was built on the site of a log church believed to have been built circa 1754. A vital part of the city since its founding, the Catholic community has preserved documents that are among sources cited by Dr. Carl J. Ekberg in his book Colonial Ste. Genevieve to support his estimated date of 1750 for Ste. Genevieve’s founding.
