Over Two Centuries of
History T
he history of Streetsboro dates back to 1798, when Titus Street received a deed from the Connecticut Western Reserve to land that would later bear his name. This famous founder, Titus Street, is also known for being the father of Augustus Street, who would eventually found Yale School of Fine Arts, the first art school connected to a university in America. The original Streetsboro Township contained 15,279 acres that were divided into 100-acre lots. In 1822, the first building — a log cabin — was built in Streetsboro by the town’s first settler, Stephen Myers, Jr. In 1825, a turnpike from Cleveland to Wellsville was laid by Titus Street and other settlers. Street donated the land for this project and it was completed two years later. Also in 1825, Street donated and designated land that would become the public square. In the center square is a stone — deeply set in the ground with a hole drilled in the top — that designates the exact center of the township. Street also bestowed a parcel of land to the community that was developed as the town cemetery. The first school in the township, located in the Northwest corner, opened its doors in 1826. The school initially had eight students, all from two families in the area. Later, other schools opened; one met in a home while the other met in a church. In the early 1860s, a schoolroom called Progress Hall was built with finances from the Ladies Aid Society. It was a two-story, two-room schoolhouse on the public square. In 1902, the first high school commencement was held in the Presbyterian

Church. Later in 1905, when the high school got too small, a threeroom schoolhouse was built on the Alden Pease residence. During these early years, there were lots of “firsts.” In 1827, the first election was held. That year, the first Justice of the Peace, Benjamin Doolittle, was elected. Doolittle, along with his sons, also played a significant role in the community by clearing several farms in the area to lay out many of the early roads. Another milestone for Streetsboro was the passing of the first stagecoach through the township on the turnpike in 1829. Streetsboro’s major industry in the early days was cheese. Cheese houses dotted the town, putting it on the map in 1873 as one of the major cheese producers in the United States. That year, Streetsboro produced over 600,000 pounds of cheese. Twelve years later, in 1885, five cheese factories were in operation. Ultimately, there would be 50 cheese factories in Portage County. Streetsboro continued as a farming community with little growth until the opening of the Ohio Turnpike in October 1955. Strategically located, the community’s exit on the freeway makes it the only interchange in Portage County. By 1957, with the boom of the automobile industry, Streetsboro experienced the beginning of a population explosion. Proximity to Akron and Cleveland — along with direct access to Interstate 80 (Ohio Turnpike); Interstate 480; and State Routes 303, 43 and 14 — greatly contributed to the rapid growth of manufacturing, distributing, and commercial and residential development in the past 50 years. In 1970, the voters decided to make Streetsboro a city. Effective January 1, 1971, Streetsboro became an official city, with its first mayor being Lowell Spencer. Since that time, the city has continued to flourish. During the past 10 years, the growth of the retail and housing sectors has doubled with no end in sight. www.streetsborochamber.org | 3

EDUCATION
A Focus on the
Future
Streetsboro City Schools
As more families are discovering the benefits of the Streetsboro community, the schools here are growing yearly, monthly and weekly. The City School District is a progressive district that strives to meet the needs of every child and prepare each student for the 21st century. Class sizes average in the mid-20s, which is very conducive to the individual attention that leads to learning success. Programs of note include all-day kindergarten, guided reading, flexible block scheduling at the middle school, advanced-placement classes, and a 4x4 block schedule at the high school. Over 2,000 students are taught by a certified staff of 152 educators in our Streetsboro City Schools. Elementary education is provided by Walt Primary School (K–1), Campus Elementary (2–3), Henry Defer Intermediate (4–6) and Streetsboro Middle School (7–8). Streetsboro High School (grades 9–12) has a population of approximately 650 students. The school boasts a very “modern” schedule of elective subjects that includes TV and Radio Production and Operation, acting, art, desktop publishing, Web page and the Internet, and journalism. Also unique to the school is the operation of its own TV station — Channel 16 — as well as the operation of a mobile nonlinear video-editing station and a radio station — WSTB FM, Channel 88.9. In September 2001, a new science wing was added to Streetsboro High School. The wing’s state-of-the-art labs are equipped with technology and work stations that are second to none in the state of Ohio. The school’s newspaper, The Orbiter, has received national recognition for 25 years. The Rockets of Streetsboro High School play a variety of sports, including volleyball, cross-country, golf, football, basketball, wrestling, track, softball, baseball and soccer. For vocational education, Maplewood Career Center in Ravenna offers training to students in grades 11 and 12. Presented in a traditional high school setting, programs include computer-aided engineering, information technology, landscape horticulture, auto collision technology, culinary arts, electronics, graphic communications, cosmetology, masonry, welding and more.
Higher Education
Hiram College More than 170,000 students attend Northeast Ohio’s 24 colleges and universities. These students come from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. As a result, higher education is a $2.2 billion economic force in Northeast Ohio. 14 | Streetsboro Area Chamber of Commerce Community Profile & Resource Guide
Of those 170,000 students, approximately 900 traditional students and 300 adult learners have chosen Hiram College, which, in 2004, became the first college in Ohio to offer its students a tuition guarantee and then add to it a tuition freeze for the class entering in the fall of 2006. “At Hiram, we’re taking a leadership position with our approach to college costs,” says Hiram College President Thomas V. Chema. “Nationally, college costs are spiraling out of the reach of many families. Additionally, in Ohio, far too few of our residents pursue a college education because of rising and unpredictable annual increases in costs. We’re pleased to be in a position of strength and to take steps to make our costs both affordable and predictable.” Chema is also co-chairman of College 360°, a cooperative venture of 15 of the Northeast Ohio institutions of higher education aimed at stemming regional brain drain by positioning Northeast Ohio to current and prospective students as a premier destination for learning, living and working. Hiram College integrates these opportunities for its students. With its intimate learning — the student-to-faculty ration is 11-to-1 and the average class size is 16 students — Hiram nevertheless has a global reach. Nearly 50 percent of Hiram students travel with faculty members to five continents to study, taking advantage of the college’s unique academic calendar. Known as the Hiram Plan, semesters are divided into two sessions: the first is a 12-week period when students take three academic courses; the second is a three-week period when students take one intensive course, complete an internship, or travel abroad with a class. Founded in 1850, Hiram College continues as one of the nation’s most respected liberal-arts institutions. Located in Ohio’s Western Reserve, Hiram attracts students from throughout the United States and 24 foreign countries. Hiram’s academic calendar, known as the
EDUCATION
Hiram Plan, is unique to the nation. Hiram is one of 13 percent of colleges and universities to be awarded a chapter of the prestigious honor society Phi Beta Kappa, and its Weekend College was the first program of its kind in Ohio. Through the Center for Adult Studies, Weekend College offers eight undergraduate majors and six minors, the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, and graduate studies for teachers. Small, affordable classes are conveniently scheduled on only two weekends per month. These flexible programs allow learners to craft a course of study that aligns with their academic and professional pursuits. Kent State University Kent State University, named a “Best Midwestern College” by The Princeton Review, offers quality academic programs in emerging, high-demand fields; a nationally and internationally recognized faculty; and an exceptional student life program. Among Ohio Universities, Kent State is known for providing highly personal attention for its students who come from across the nation and some 90 foreign countries. It is especially well known for its strong commitment to student success.
Kent State offers educational opportunities ranging from certificate programs, associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, educational specialist and doctoral degrees. It is regarded as one of the nation’s top 90 public research universities and serves more than 36,000 students on eight campuses. Kent State’s eight-campus network, the 27th largest regional system in the country, serves both the development of a true living/learning approach at the Kent Campus and regional needs on seven other campuses throughout northeast Ohio. When it comes to student success, Kent State is committed to providing spaces designed to accommodate academic, social and personal needs. Students living on the Kent campus — the largest residential campus in northeast Ohio — have the convenience of high-speed Internet access from their rooms, dining at dozens of different restaurants, and enjoying recreational and cultural programming. Kent State’s commitment to the “total” student is evident in the state-of-the-art, 153,000-square-foot Student Recreation and Wellness Center. With all of the academic, cultural, athletic and recreational opportunities Kent
State has to offer, it’s no surprise that the university continues to attract the best and brightest students from across the nation and more than 90 countries. If you’re interested in learning more about Kent State University, call 800-988-KENT or visit www.kent.edu for more information.

treetsboro enjoys a diversity of business and industry while offering a collaborative network of professional organizations eager to promote economic and community development. The Streetsboro Chamber of Commerce, working side by side with city government, Portage County Economic Development, and several other support organizations, strives to make the city a better place for all types of enterprise. Together, we are committed to working with both existing and future businesses to promote economic and community development. The success of Streetsboro’s more than 400 businesses over the past decade has enabled Streetsboro to develop as one of the fastest-growing communities in Portage County. We’re a community where many small and medium-sized industries employing between 50 to 500 employees flourish. Streetsboro is ideal for small industry — a sector that contributes to a high percentage of the area’s manufacturing capacity. For those looking for office or industrial space for their companies, Streetsboro is home to some of the finest industrial parks around. Our current parks include Interstate Commerce Center, Phillip Parkway, Streetsboro Industrial Campus and Omega Industrial Park. For more information on these sites, please contact the City of Streetsboro or the Streetsboro Area Chamber of Commerce.
Strategic Location
Streetsboro’s well-developed transportation network offers easy access to the major urban markets nearby. Centrally located to serve the major U.S. and Canadian markets, Northeast Ohio is within 500 miles (800 kilometers) of 47 percent of the U.S. population and more than 30 percent of the Canadian population. More than 50 percent of the nation’s retail businesses are within overnight trucking distance of the area.
Employers Following are a few of the employers, ranging from long-established to new, who continue to make a large contribution to the growth of the local economy. The Geis Companies, established more than 30 years ago, is a total service firm, offering fully improved industrial land, full building design services, and “turn-key” construction. The firm’s main concentration is on industrial, warehousing, office, and research and development buildings through design/ build expertise for the specific needs of its clientele. The 60-employee firm works with an established group of sub-contractors and suppliers, assuring stability and quality. The company has developed five major industrial parks comprising approximately 2,300 acres and has built over 6 million square feet of office, warehouse and industrial projects. Geis is also recognized for the company’s strong relationships with prominent area
financial institutions. Working with these institutions, the corporation has been able to successfully offer financial assistance to its diversified clientele in excess of $80 million. Deluxe Business Services, a division of Deluxe Corporation — one of the nation’s top manufacturing companies — has operated in Streetsboro for more than 10 years. With more than 300 employees, Deluxe specializes in the print production of business checks and forms. Products from this facility are distributed throughout the country. New to Streetsboro is L’Oréal. In 2004, L’Oréal constructed and opened a distribution center in Streetsboro. In the business of distributing salon-professional products (like shampoos, conditioners and styling aids), the company has 250 full-time employees and another 200 temporary employees.

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY
Indicators of Portage County’s economic performance continue to rise with an increase in retail sales, housing starts and business groundbreakings. From 1992 to 2004, new and expanding manufacturing and distribution firms invested $745 million in the county. These investments added over 6,000 new jobs to the county’s job base and retained over 5,200 existing jobs. New construction continued and added 7.9 million square feet of new industrial space. The retail sector of the county’s economic base got a significant boost when Aurora Farms Premium Outlets brought 70 new retail stores to the area.
Business Support Workforce Streetsboro is very proud to offer employers its well-educated and experienced labor workforce. The region is an industrial and technological center with a population of 4.5 million and a highly skilled workforce of more than 2 million. For both employers and job-hunting employees, Portage Workforce Connection provides a one-stop link to employment and training. By logging on to www.portageworkforce.org, residents can get assistance finding jobs and receiving training and career counseling, while businesses can locate employees, training resources, and labor-market information. Information on community services such as health care, day care and transportation can also be accessed from the Portage Workforce Connection.
Area Industry Technology and innovation abound in Northeast Ohio. Edison Polymer Innovation Center (EPIC) has combined the resources of the University of Akron and Case Western Reserve University to offer the most impressive concentrations of polymer research and advanced training resources in the world. Currently, over 1,200 polymer-related firms operate in the area. Another university consortium in the area is ALCOM (Advanced Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials and Technology Center). Leading the nation in its field, ALCOM includes Kent State University, Case Western Reserve and the University of Akron. The pioneering research into advanced optical materials at the Liquid Crystal Institute on the Kent State University campus is responsible for the liquid crystal displays used in
hand-held instruments, laptop computers and telecommunications. Kent Displays, Inc., licensed this groundbreaking technology and is currently manufacturing flat-panel signs from its Portage County facility.
Financial Incentives Streetsboro currently has more than 20 tax abatements and tax-increment financing packages in place. As local leaders know, your business’ success helps our city thrive. The city established Enterprise Zones in 1989 that enable it to negotiate real and personal property taxes for a 10-year period. Streetsboro has also recently acquired a segment of Foreign Trade Zone 181. The main objective of the foreign trade zone program is the creation and retention of jobs through increased export activity. Locally based companies can use foreign trade zones to maintain the cost competitiveness of their U.S.-based operations vis-a-vis their foreign-based competitors. Zone status allows the reduction of certain operating costs associated with a U.S. location (that are avoided when operating from a foreign site). For details on incentive programs, contact the Streetsboro mayor’s office at 330-626-4942 or the Streetsboro Area Chamber of Commerce at 330-626-4769.
Portage County Portage County was historically known for its high-quality manufactured glass and its cheese industry. Today, the county’s growing business base includes a host of manufacturing plants that make products from toys to light bulbs to aircraft components. The leading products in the county’s manufacturing sector include metalworking, plastic and rubber products, and printing/publishing.

The Portage County Office of Economic Development (PCOED) is responsible for providing assistance to industrial realtors, builders, local industries and local communities in an effort to maintain and improve the economic base in Portage County. PCOED manages the county’s Enterprise Zone Program and also maintains a database of development information. For more information, visit www.portageworkforce.org/pcoed. Kent Regional Business Alliance is also eager to assist area businesses. This nonprofit organization, established in 1994, is devoted to the growth and development of small businesses and the high-technology industry throughout Northeast Ohio. Programs of the alliance include new-business orientations for start-up businesses, topic-specific workshops, one-on-one sessions with a business counselor, assistance in getting government contracts, and smallbusiness loans. For more information, visit www.krba.biz. SCORE, the “Counselors to America’s Small Business,” offers several services to help start a small business or to make a small business more profitable. Among the services offered are individual counseling, mentoring, workshops and seminars. The counselors at SCORE are all experienced and successful executives, managers and business owners who want to give back to the community and people who can benefit from their years of experience. These volunteers come from a broad variety of professions and business interests, and possess a wealth of knowledge available to interested small-business owners at no cost. In 2005, the local chapter of SCORE based in Akron celebrated its 40th anniversary. For more information about SCORE, contact visit www.akronscore.org.

hristian tradition and values run deep in Streetsboro and can be seen in the churches that are scattered throughout the community. A variety of worship expressions can be found in the numerous denominations represented here. You will find traditional churches that include Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Church of God and Church of Christ, as well as several different types of nondenominational congregations. In addition to a steadfast devotion to their own congregations, the churches also contribute to the community in many ways. They provide kids ministries and youth ministries that welcome residents regardless of church affiliation. They are also often the volunteers who support area social services, which are the community’s backbone during times of crisis. The clergy of the churches in Streetsboro share the bond and commitment of “shepherding” their parishioners and area residents.
