Sincerely,

From ribbon-cutting photos in the newspaper to continuing education in the community, the West St. Louis County Chamber of Commerce excels at creating a thriving atmosphere for businesses and residents of West. St. Louis County.

West County Young Professionals Designed to engage career-focused and civic-minded professionals ages 21-40, West County Young Professionals (WCYP) is uniting and preparing a new generation of leaders for the future development of West St. Louis County. The organization was formed by the West St. Louis County Chamber of Commerce in January 2011 and quickly grew to approximately 50 members in its first year of operation. “We have within our committee a co-chair of advocacy and development who brings to the table a lot of networking opportunities where we can, as a group, talk about the YP and increase our membership through face-to-face contact,” explained WCYP committee chairperson Missy Muñoz. “The other way we’ve engaged young

professionals is through social media, and initially we reached out to our own co-workers and friends through email, or Facebook or LinkedIn. We got a lot of our initial numbers that way and that’s how we continue to communicate and grow.” WCYP currently offers after-hours gatherings for networking and social development as well as daytime Lunch N’ Learn sessions where engaging speakers help members develop new tools for their professional lives. Moving forward, they also hope to not only continue to make members aware of opportunities to volunteer for worthy causes, but to organize their own civic projects.

piggyback off of an effort the Chamber did for the Circle of Concern by collecting some canned goods and toys for their December program,” Muñoz said. “The goal is not to just provide information with the hope that people will volunteer but to really engage them and activate that action step, so there will be more organized group efforts in the future.” WCYP membership is just $40 per year and is offered free to West St. Louis County Chamber of Commerce members. Learn more by visiting the WCYP on Facebook or the WCYP page on the Chamber website at www.westcountychamber.com.

Community Chronicle What’s Happening Around West St. Louis County

Clarkson Valley Enhanced Health Care for the Clarkson Valley Area

Ballwin Ballwin Among Money Magazine’s 2011 Best Places to Live Mayor Tim Pogue agrees with Money staff writers that there are many gems that make Ballwin a wonderful community — especially for families. “We have the indoor recreational facility and the outdoor recreational facility at North Pointe,” he said. “There are so many things that people can get out and do; lots of opportunities for the community to be involved in the city they live in.” Pogue says Ballwin is a city that brings people together. “There are Ballwin Days and the concerts we offer in the summer,” he noted. “We have great school districts and a very active community.” He also sees the proximity to St. Louis as a draw. “There are big corporations in the area, easy access to an airport and big sports teams. You can have a bit of suburban lifestyle [combined with] the opportunities of a large city,” he added. This isn’t the first time Ballwin has achieved national recognition as a great place to live. Pogue notes that this is the second time in the last seven years that Ballwin has made the top 100 list. “We were very pleased to get this designation again.” When asked why he moved to Ballwin, Pogue said, “I am a lifelong resident. My wife and I both graduated from Lafayette High School. I have such great memories of Ballwin as a kid. I don’t think I was ever bored.” When he was a young adult, his parents left the community, seeking retirement elsewhere. But he has never considered following suit. “I didn’t see any reason to move. This is where I want to be.”

Opened in 2010, Mercy’s ambulatory health care facility at the corner of Clayton and Clarkson roads provides convenient access to a wide variety of medical services for residents in the Clarkson Valley area. Mercy at Clayton Clarkson offers a broad scope of outpatient services under one roof, providing patients with a unique, comprehensive approach to their health care. As the home of Mercy Clinic St. Louis Cancer and Breast Institute, the location is equipped to provide the latest in breast screening, diagnostic

Ellisville New Park to Offer a Doggone Good Time Ellisville’s Bluebird Park will soon provide a special treat for four-legged friends. The city has a dog park in the works, with special spaces planned for both small and large dogs. Conceptual drawings for the Ellisville Dog Park were approved by the City Council in July 2011. The park will be located at the site of Bluebird Park’s former volleyball court, east of the Bussmann Shelter and south of the Connor Ballfield. City Councilwoman Linda Reel is chair of the Dog Park Committee, and she spearheaded the effort to create the park after requests from many constituents. “I knew in the current economic climate our city would not be able to fund a dog park, so I started with a table at our Farmers Market, seeking volunteers to form a committee,” she said.

mammography, infusion services, radiation oncology and medical oncology research. Other Mercy Clinic offices at Clayton Clarkson house physicians practicing internal medicine, family medicine, OB-GYN, and heart and vascular. Additional services include state-of-the-art imaging such as MRI, CT, ultrasound, bone density and X-ray; laboratory, including EKG screenings; pathology; and an outpatient surgery center. Integrated medicine and therapy services at the facility include chiropractic/acupuncture, massage therapy, physical therapy, psychology services, nutritional counseling, lymphedema support and auriculotherapy.

Reel was pleasantly surprised by the large interest. With the help of fellow animal lovers, the process went smoothly. “First we looked for potential locations in Ellisville; we made a presentation to City Council, and they accepted our recommendation,” Reel said. A plan is in place to ensure the city will not bear the expense of the park’s upkeep. Annual membership fees of $40 will be assessed to cover operating and ongoing maintenance costs. Generous donations have provided the needed funds to get the park open. “West County Communities have been very supportive, and we’ve had great turnouts for all our fundraising events,” Reel said. “And our Dog Park memberships will be open to everyone in the community.” Park planners expect to open in September 2012. Those interested in the park can visit their website at www.ellisvilledogpark.com.

Manchester A New Place to Play Dedicated in spring 2011, Manchester’s new Corey J. Donnelly Memorial Ampitheater began with an idea and resulted in a brand-new performance space that will benefit the entire community. Manchester Mayor David Willson received a suggestion from resident Jim Donnelley, who hoped the city would entertain the idea of building an ampitheater in memory of his son, Corey, a band member at Parkway South High School. Donations from the Corey J. Donnelly Music Memorial Fund helped kickstart the process. Manchester’s Director of Parks and Recreation, Eileen Collins, explains that the first step was a feasibility study, presented to the Board of Aldermen. “It was well received,” she said. Collins explains that the amphitheater is designed to serve a twofold purpose. It houses a local concert series, and can also be reserved

Twin Oaks Newly Designed for Fun Twin Oaks is proud of its recently improved Twin Oaks Park, located at #1 Twin Oaks Court. City staff members explain that the park planning process included months of research and visits to area municipal parks. A new playground was designed with areas for both 2- to 5-yearolds and 6- to 12-year-olds and with rubberized safety surfacing. The village made storm water

as a pavilion. But the facility also has potential to give local students a chance to perform in a unique venue and to bring a variety of shows to audiences. “We hope to extend an invitation to both private and public schools in the area as an opportunity for plays, vocal concerts and more,” Collins said. Find the ampitheater in Paul Schroeder Park, 359 Old Meramec Station Road. Community members and organizations can find out about rental by stopping by the Manchester park office in Paul Schroeder Park.

improvements and added a pavilion and landscaping. One of the more unique playground features is an oversized xylophone. Additionally, large sun shades that look like sails cover some of the slides and climbing rocks. Kathy Yahl, Twin Oaks village administrator/ clerk, says that upgrades to City Park have been extremely well received. “We have had nothing but positive feedback … how much the kids enjoy the variation of features selected and the close seating that is now available to the playground, which was not there before.”

Valley Park “Let Your Spirit Take Wing” at the World Bird Sanctuary There’s a serene haven for birds and people alike in Valley Park. The World Bird Sanctuary has been next door to Lone Elk County Park and Chubb Trail for more than 35 years. With over 305 acres and more than 200 animals under care, the sanctuary offers a one-of-a-kind wildlife experience and an environmental education opportunity. Spokeswoman Catherine Redfern says between 70,000 and 90,000 visitors come to the facility each year, and the sanctuary’s broad appeal brings in more than just bird lovers. “Our visitors are made up of outdoor enthusiasts, parents and grandparents with children, photographers, bird lovers and others,” she said. One visit to the sanctuary isn’t enough. The experience is ever-changing, and there’s always something different to see. “Our exhibits change seasonally,” Redfern explained. “Because we have birds from all over the

world, we have species that tolerate our weather extremes well — native bald eagles, pelicans, cranes and hawks — but we also have those that can’t tolerate the cold. Birds such as Australian kookaburras, brown pelicans and Harris hawks are taken off exhibit and brought inside during winter.” Redfern says that visitors should also know that the sanctuary has both a wildlife hospital and education center and that visitors can take part in themed events year-round. Coming face-to-face with the sanctuary’s beautiful birds is often a lifechanging experience. “Seeing these birds in person makes a connection that can’t be made in books or TV documentaries,” Redfern said. For more information about the World Bird Sanctuary, visit www.worldbirdsanctuary.org.

Jodi Smedley, corporate wellness manager for the Wildwood Family YMCA, is a gardening enthusiast. She hoped to bring her love of gardening — “learned from my grandmother” — to YMCA members, believing that an organic garden is a perfect fit with the organization’s mission to promote healthy living and foster a sense of social responsibility. After positive survey responses from members to the proposed garden, an organizing committee secured support from local businesses and donations of lumber and labor, and the Wild West Community Garden was born. “In one amazing construction day, volunteers built all 48 of our plots,” Smedley said. During its first year in 2011, the program welcomed a range of gardeners — ”from beginners to experienced,” Smedley said. “Gardeners have told us that they learn from each other and have made new friends. “It’s convenient to work out and then tend to your garden. The raised beds make it easy for planting and caring for plants,” she added. Located on the YMCA property at 2641 Highway 109, Wildwood, the 4' x 14' garden plots are available to the public at large. Call 636-458-6636 to learn more. www.westcountychamber.com

In 2011, Ballwin made its second appearance on Money magazine’s list of the “100 Best Places to Live.” Among Ballwin’s many virtues, Money cited great schools, low crime rates and close proximity to five major universities and colleges as contributing factors for the accolade. The city also boasts an impressive array of recreational opportunities, including The Pointe at Ballwin Commons fitness facility, North Pointe Family Aquatic Center, Ballwin Golf Course and an active Parks and Recreation Department. This dynamic community of over 30,000 residents offers fashionable, well-maintained homes on large lots, with a median home price of just under $200,000 and no city residential real estate tax. A variety of attractive apartment complexes are available for renters as well.

Village of Twin Oaks

www.manchestermo.gov

http://vil.twin-oaks.mo.us

Home of the nationally recognized Henry Avenue Historic District, the community of Manchester has more than 18,000 residents and a proud history dating back more than two centuries. The look and feel of the city’s historic section, which includes a shopping district encompassing more than 30 structures built in the 19th and early 20th centuries, is protected and fostered by an active Historic Review Commission. Homes in Manchester include everything from historic structures built in the early 1900s to modern subdivisions and apartment complexes. Manchester offers a low property tax rate as well as free trash and yard waste disposal and recycling. The city has seven parks encompassing approximately 63 acres, including recreational amenities such as an aquatics center, playgrounds, ball fields, and a summer concert and movie series.

Cozy Twin Oaks has nearly 100 single or two-family homes, including upscale homes on wooded lots, as well as dozens of multi-family housing units. The village does not impose any property tax on residents or businesses, yet still provides services such as trash collection and street maintenance via revenue from utility gross receipt taxes, sales taxes and other sources of income. Twin Oaks Pedestrian Park provides residents with amenities such as a public pavilion, gazebo, playgrounds, sports venues, a lake and a walking path, and a variety of annual family-fun events. Twin Oaks also has a surprising number of commercial businesses for a community of just 392 residents, including grocery stores, pharmacies, boutiques, restaurants and professional services.

City of Valley Park http://030bf4c.netsolhost.com/home.html

Founded in the late 19th century, Valley Park was originally a summer resort. Today it’s a growing residential and business community of approximately 7,000 residents. The city offers a wide choice of quality homes as well as apartment complexes and condominiums.
