A FEATURED ARTICLE

Spotlight — making a difference!

Fro m A s h e s t o R e b i r t h When I was a ending high school a few years ago at Norwell, I thought that I was hopeless, that I would never go to college; that I would fail at life. I never thought that I would get to where I am now. Since moving to Cambridge into Community Living, that’s when the turning point began. All throughout high school, I had never go en any community volunteer hours, there was simply nowhere to go in Palmerston. When I moved into Cambridge, I had managed to get all 40 hours volunteering at the Cambridge Shelter within five months and I was able to graduate from high school at U-Turn. I had also done a few co-op placements at Morning Glory Café and Boston Pizza developing job skills for future employment. A er ge ng my diploma, I began to take courses at Conestoga College, a Food Safety course that I passed with an 88% mark, and now currently a song wri ng course, and in the near future, a course for video game music. Since I’m going to be pursuing a career in music, I have taken guitar lessons at Jeff Vasey Music School and am currently taking vocal lessons. I have also bought a new guitar to improve my gear. I have also just completed employment training at the YMCA through the Youth Job Connec on and thanks to them; I am soon to be employed. I’ve learned to live independently within a year and hope to be moving into my own place next year. Much like the Phoenix, I had burned to ashes, but now I have risen to success. I had started out seemingly hopeless, but I had surprised myself and proved my fears wrong by never giving up, facing life with vim and vigour, and rising to the challenge. I have truly grown from a mid boy into a man of many conquests. By: Ezekiel Gonzalez

The proud recipient of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award is... “Elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside. Chanel”

Christopher Laframboise received his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award from the Governor-general David Johnston on September 15th 2016 in Toronto. Chris completed over 1000 hours of community service before the age of 18 in order to receive this award. In previous years Chris received the bronze and silver award and con nued his hard work for the Gold. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an award for people aged 14-24 and mo vates them for life success. They can obtain this award in many different ways and develop a “life plan” for themselves by se ng unique goals to achieve. This assists young people to discover their hidden talents along the way. The Swimmer of the Year award goes to... Every Year Special Olympic Ontario Cambridge picks a Swimmer of the Year. This decision is a hard decision for the Coaches to make. In the past we have picked the most improved swimmer or have picked the athlete that had the most sportsman like a tude. It is a very hard decision, as I stated. This year the decision was an easy one to make. We chose the swimmer who was the living example of some of the goals of the Special Olympic Ontario Program. Some of these goals are to teach the athletes about the benefits of exercise and nutri onal ea ng. The swimmer, we picked for the Swimmer of the Year was Bradley Schmidt. When Bradley made the provincial team this year, he adopted the a tude that he was training. He was riding his sta onary bike every day, altered his ea ng habits and trained hard at all swim prac ces. This a tude is part of the reason Bradley had a great me and won 4 medals at the Provincials in Guelph. He would even share his knowledge about healthy foods with his fellow swimmers. He would check up on his coach to make sure she was ea ng healthy. The results showed in his life. Bradley was away on vaca on during the annual sports Banquet so I had the pleasure of presen ng him his award this summer at LINKS. Thanks Bradley for your hard work this past swim year and congratula ons of being the Swimmer of the Year of the Cambridge Tigers SOO Swim team. Community Living Cambridge is pleased to announce the successful opening of a second home on Bakersfield Drive (aka…BK2)! The property at Bakersfield Drive was purchased by Cambridge Rehab Homes, and then rented to Community Living Cambridge for the purpose of suppor ng three young men transi oning from Youth to Adult Services. The home officially opened on September 27th, 2016 and is our second program on this quiet residen al street in Cambridge. It features three bedrooms, two bathrooms, an eat-in Kitchen, separate living room and games room. The purpose of this home is to offer a suppor ve housing op on for individuals who need some extra guidance as they navigate through life and, to provide addi onal supports to help them succeed as they learn to live more independently. In an effort to meet the needs of the three men coming into our services, it was determined that they would benefit from an Enhanced Supported Independent Living opportunity with a few extra supports in place. This meant having a higher level of involvement than our current ESIL/SIL programs support while maintaining our vision to promote as much autonomy and independence as possible. In an effort to do this responsibly, we provide an enhanced level of support throughout the week and on weekends. So, along with the Counsellor of the program, the men receive support from a full- me Life-skills Facilitator (new posi on) and, full- me overnight staff (awake). In addi on to the enhanced residen al supports, the men will also receive support from our Youth Navigator who will assist them with their voca onal needs/interests e.g. school, work, and volunteer, hobbies, etc. With all supports in place, our goal is to help guide each person as they transi on into adulthood and take their very first steps towards Independence! We are very excited about this new ESIL home and look forwarding to planning an open-house with the guys in the coming weeks. By: Nancy Evans Program Manager – Independent Living Choices

Cambridge International Street Ar t Festival

"Fashions fade, style is eternal." —Yves Saint Laurent

On

August 13th and 14th Cambridge invited internaonal and local ar sts alike to come together to celebrate the ar sc genre that has come to be known as “street art”. Visitors were invited to witness masterpieces created by graffi ar sts who used spray paint to adorn the riverbank walls, as well as numerous chalk murals as they slowly emerged from the asphalt on the streets of Main and Dickson. Alongside the mul tude of beau ful works were pieces made by our very own Art Trails Studio ar sts en tled “Synthesis”. The four large wooden murals depic ng landmarks of Cambridge and its boroughs (Galt, Preston, Hespeler) stood at the corner of Dickson and Water Street, which served as the unofficial entrance to the fes val. Ten par cipants from our Big Events program (including some of the Art Trails group) volunteered at the event on the second day and had a great day. They assisted the ar sts by providing refreshments and distributed informa on and flyers to visitors upon request. Those par cipants who took part in the crea on of “Synthesis” took me to greet the public and talk about the pieces. Although much of the first day was plagued by rain, Sunday’s weather was great and the event was well a ended. By Joe Sousa

Another exci ng event this summer was the annual Fundayz car wash and bake sale where friends, family and even the police officers came to support Fundayz so we could raise money for a treat and the end of the year lunch. Our final day together was bi ersweet as we had a final lunch with plenty of food, drinks, family and friends, and an end of the summer slideshow to bring the summer to a close. Most importantly many friends were made this year as we got to experience so many ac vi es together. We hope that the memories and friendships will be cherished by all. A trip to Santa’s Village a new meaning to Christmas We o en forget what Christmas truly means. To many of us, Christmas comes with the overwhelming need of purchasing gi s and not remembering that it means far more than that. Upon arriving to Santa’s Village you could hear the excited cheers of the children on Santa’s Roller Coaster and were filled with the excitement of the day ahead. We were immediately transported into the world of candy canes, fresh baked gingerbread, and magical reindeer.

We immersed ourselves in all things Christmas, from the miniature train making its way around the park, to Santa’s Summer sleigh (his jet boat), to decora ng your own freshly baked gingerbread man. I myself was reminded what it truly means to celebrate Christmas, by witnessing the immense happiness on the faces of Ben and Mark, they were in awe of their surroundings. While wai ng pa ently for our turn to meet Santa, Ben and Mark were quietly taking in the interior of Santa’s summer home, it was there they heard, “HO HO HO.” and you could instantly feel the electricity from all the excited children and parents alike. The joyous expression from onlookers and families at Ben and Mark’s reac on to Santa will forever be etched into my heart. Ben and Mark reminded me that warm summer day, that Christmas is not about the gi s you give and receive, but the people you get to spend Christmas with, and that the Christmas spirit is actually in our hearts all year long...
