It has been a great winter for us so far and spring seems to be coming early so that makes us all smile! We had a great turnout in January for our Informa on Night and just to reaffirm‐we are not closing. We are con nuing to move forward with our plans to develop ARC into a pro‐ gram that will offer a variety of op ons to the folks who a end –a work component being one. We are s ll working out how that might look and have hired an interior designer to dra up some conceptual ideas for us. We are s ll at the early stages of this and will keep everyone updated as we move along. Something else that is “new” are the Fact Sheets that we have sent to our community folks. These sheets replace the old medica on updates and bi‐annual physicals. These will come home each year for you to re‐ view and ensure we have the most up to date informa on. We appreciate everyone being prompt in returning them to us! We had two staff recognized this year for milestone service: Sarah Kno for 5 years and me for 35 years. I find it hard to believe that 35 years could come and go so quickly! It has been a great me and I can’t wait to see what the next 35 brings! (Well maybe not 35 but a few more any‐ way). On a more solemn note, we were very saddened at the recent and sudden passing of Anna Hughes. Anna was a newer par cipant at ARC but had been connected to the agency for many years. She brought joy and laughter to the program and was a pleasure to have here. She will be missed greatly by everyone and our sympathies go out to her family. “Some mes your joy is the source of your smile, but some mes your smile can be the source of your joy”.— Hanh Naht Thich Sincerely, Karen Ferguson Manager ARC Industries P.S. Each year, Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) invites Canadian schools, individuals and organiza ons to make ValenƟnes for Vets. VAC then distributes the valen nes to Veterans in long‐term care facili es across the country in me for February 14th. ValenƟnes for Vets began in 1989 when the late newspaper columnist, Ann Landers, encouraged her readers to create special valen nes for Veterans in care facili es throughout Canada and the United States. Every year, Landers' special "Valen nes for Vets" column asked her readers to remember the valiant sacrifices of their na ons' Veterans by making them personal hand‐cra ed valen nes. This year we choose Parkwood Veterans Hospital, in London Ontario, to send personalized cards to local Veterans as one of our employees has a connec on with this wonderful organiza on. We are very glad to have Jane as one of our Super Star volunteers. Heather Legue is another full‐ me staff who volunteers on a regular basis. She has been on the Christmas Dance commi ee, helps at many special events and is also one of our regular OLG E‐Bingo volunteers. What would we do without you? Val Brooks and Lee Wigboldus, our “husband & wife” volunteer team. Both Val and Lee are on our board of directors, they always step up to help at our special events and fundraisers. Volunteering his me and talent!
One way to get the most out of life is to look upon it as an adventure.
There are many individuals within the Community Op ons program who volunteer their me, talents and energy in our community. Their contribu ons do not go un‐ no ced. In this ar cle we acknowledge Stephen Ellis, as he journeys to a new volun‐ teer placement site, always focused on his desire to help others in need. With the closing of Marsdale Manor, Stephen’s 7 year volunteer commitment came to an end in December 2015. This le Stephen without the volunteer work he prided himself on. Fortunately Community Op ons was able to partner with S rling Heights Long Term Care and nego ate 2 new volunteer posi ons! Stephen once again enjoys serving others through helping out in the dining area. He is clearing off tables a er lunch, wiping them down and wrapping packages of cutlery. As is the case with all our volunteers, a police records check is required and an inter‐ view and orienta on is arranged with the volunteer site. Stephen received a warm welcome from many of the S rling Heights staff! They have made every effort to en‐ sure their volunteers have a posi ve and rewarding experience. This past January, the daycare closed its doors and Angie lost her favourite volunteer placement. She talked to her parents and the Community Connec ons Facilitator about her op ons. A er thinking on it for a few days, she decided to try volunteering in the laundry room at St. Luke’s Re rement Home. Angie turned out to be a whiz at folding laundry. She enjoys the order and neatness of folding items. The laundry room staff is very welcoming and pa ent teaching Angie how to fold the different ar cles of clothing. Angie enjoys knowing that what she has folded is then delivered to the resident’s rooms in a nice, neat pile. Angie has stated many mes, “I love it here!” Congratula ons to you, Angie, on your new placement. Submi ed By: Nicole Fraser, Community Connec ons

We le Cambridge on a very cold and windy day. The guys were excited and nervous at the same me. While we waited for our plane, we spent some me ge ng something to eat and joked around. When we got in the plane, the guys were very thrilled and happy to finally see their dream come true! We planned this trip months in advance. This was the first me that some par cipants traveled out of the country and, for some of them, also the first me they traveled in an airplane. “I thought I will be sick in the plane, but I did very well” ex‐ pressed Bruce a er we arrived to Cuba. In Cuba, the guys had a fantas c me! They were able to eat different food, drink exo c drinks and to enjoy a beau ful beach and bright sun, meanwhile in Canada, the weather was very cold. At night, we enjoyed the disco and different live shows where the guys were able to experience another kind of music. Bill was very happy when he was asked to dance by a lovely Lady, one night when we were watching a show at the resort. The guys had so much fun that they wanted to stay in Cuba longer. Steven said, “Can we call Don (ILC Manager) and ask him if we can stay at least one more day?” It was sad for the guys to leave the resort and the hotel. The people at the hotel were extremely help‐ ful and caring. They even helped us celebrate Kevin’s birthday on the last day of our stay at the hotel. We are already exploring the possibility to do another trip within the next year. There is a special thank you to Don Crowther and the ILC staff for helping us to plan this amazing trip. Also, thank you to Odelia White and Dorothy Rosengarten for arranging a van so we could use it to drop off the guys at the airport. By Luis Jimenez

The other day at staff mee ng I was sharing a story with my team regarding my experience suppor ng someone through the STEPS Program with the agency, and a person suggested that I write this ar cle. So here it is. I am a weekend residen al counsellor, so during the week I used to have a lot of free me. Not too long ago I had a busy social life with a friend I met while volunteering for Cooking Capers about 13 years ago. We used to do many things together; we line danced, we joined water aerobics class and lunch out at least once a week. But in August 2015 she passed away and I lost my best friend. I thought I was fine, but as the me passed, I found myself slipping down into a sadness that I couldn’t understand. I didn’t go much anymore, except to work. Not too long ago during a conversa on with my program manager, I shared how sad and unhappy I have been lately and how I realized feeling that way was affec ng my health. She listened, and she told me things would get be er. She even offered to have coffee with me some me. A gesture I appreciated very much. A few days later my manager approached me, and asked me if I knew anyone interested to work in the STEPS program providing one on one support to a gentleman who lives in the home that I worked at. When I suggested a name she said, and how about you? So I thought about it for a minute and agreed to give it a try. And that decision has changed me. Since we started I look forward to each and every day. I have a smile on my face and what I felt is hard to explain. Not only do I have things to do, but I do them assis ng a person who was in a very similar place than I am. Some days just to try to mo vate him to get out of bed was a challenge and forget about having a shower or wash his clothes. Since we enrolled in the STEPS program when I arrive to pick him up at 9 AM he is wai ng for me to start his day. Most days we go the YMCA to exercise, other days we go ska ng and out to eat. We plan together ac vi es for the following week. His life has improved as well! All daily rou nes like showering and laundry are ge ng done without being asked. Everyone no ced a huge improvement in his outlook. But the reality is that not only is he happier, but so am I. He thinks I am helping him, but we are actually helping each other, so I thanked my manager for seeing, what I could not. Thanks! Submi ed by Nancy Newton‐Smith www.communitylivingcambridge.ca

"Venture outside your comfort zone. The rewards are worth it." --Rapunzel (Tangled)
A d re a m c o m e t r u e fo r R i c h a rd ! As soon as Richard received the news of the financial compensa on from the Huronia Class Ac on Suit he said, "I wanted to go to Disney!". A dream that he was not able to accomplish as part of his Individual Support Plan (ISP) for 2014. My mission started with finding the best accommoda ons, flights and ckets to the theme parks. A er a few a empts to Expedia Cruise Ship Center the plan changed and a final reserva on was made as a ‘One on One 2015 Winter Vaca on’ package. The dream became a reality when we picked up Richard at Pine St. on one wintry night, Jan. 19th to take him to Pearson Interna onal Airport. His trip was a nice direct flight to Orlando Interna onal Airport, where a Disney shu le awaited for us. Then off we went to take Richard to the most magical place on Earth— Disney. The next morning Richard was ready to visit The Magic Kingdom. Richard was able to visit many parks while in Disney for one week. He visited Magic Kingdom, Hollywood studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot. Richard enjoyed his en re trip as a whole. However, there were a few things that Rich‐ ard showed a great deal of excitement about: Rides made the top of his list! Richard went on Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Run and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. All of them were scary rides—just the way Richard likes them! Restaurants was his next favourite! Richard had a variety of different cuisines while on his vaca on and was able to try new exci ng foods. He loved the Italian, French and American themed nights. Shows were deligh ul! Richard was able to see mul ple shows while in Disney. Howev‐ er, two shows in par cular were his favourite and he kept talking about them once home. They were; the Lion Kingdom show which had a lot of music and acroba cs that kept Richard amazed and the "Indiana Jones" show was par cularly interes ng to Rich‐ ard as they did an epic stunt spectacular perfor‐ mance where they showed how the stunts were done. Overall Richard had a life changing vaca on that will be remembered for the rest of his life. Richard has been talking about this trip for many years and we were thrilled to see him achieve his dream and I am most privileged to be part of it!
