The closing of an excit- 24 ing year at North Lodge

December, the end of the year, twelve busy months that have presented us with many tasks and opportunities. And this month brings its own level of ‘busy’ with much planning and connecting. In this bustling season I’d like to take a few moments of reflection, to catch a breath and share my appreciation for the opportunities Community Living Cambridge has received. Our community was able to welcome a number of young adults into new homes. This provided a safe home to begin new chapters in their lives, making the transition from school and youth to adulthood. An alternative residential model was opened with a mentor sharing the living space alongside three of these fine people. This approach is appropriated named ‘Shared Spaces’!

Shared Spaces on Bakersfield Drive

Community Living Cambridge is pleased to announce the successful opening of a new home with ‘Shared Space’ on Bakersfield Drive. This is an exciting new program within our agency that is home to three young men who are taking their very first steps towards independent living! This home features two separate living spaces customized to fit the needs of the men with ample space for a one bedroom apartment that is occupied by a live in mentor. The overall goal of the program is to offer an alternative housing option to individuals who need a little extra help making good choices in their daily lives, problem solving and learning how to live independently. Since the home opened on November 2nd, the men have settled in and are starting to feel at home in their new surroundings. They have a solid support circle in place that includes; a counsellor who is helping them navigate through all aspects of independent living, a manager to oversee the program, the mentor who provides friendship and support when staff are not present (mainly overnight/early morning/weekends) and, connection to our youth navigator who is assisting the men to find meaningful community options that will help them work towards achieving their dreams and reaching their goals. The men are a great fit for this program and, they’re a welcomed addition to our agency. Nancy Evans – Program Manger

A few days ago I was invited to a Christmas gathering with the ILC family, and I had the opportunity to see and feel the warmth amongst this ever growing group that has re-shaped our agency. Not only were we spoiled with a delicious turkey dinner but also with a great sense of comradery and fellowship. In talking to both participants and support staff I realized we had been able to learn, adapt and implement positive change in the lives of people we support and consequently in our own lives and the agencies journey. I was happy to see so many happy and smiley faces... and it came to me that all those difficult days when we had to take a new approach; come up with creative ways to deal with a new situation or been challenged with a crisis, were stepping stones leading us to become better, to relay on each other’s strengths and to become more flexible, and most of all appreciative of the successes we’ve had along the way. So on behalf of the team and the people that we are honoured to serve. Merry Christmas to all and a happy successful 2016. By Lourdes Toro Director of Program Development and Residential Services

There were over 40 draw prizes for some very lucky winners, and in addition all who attended received a take away gift at the end of the evening! Our friend, Lori Hill, again graciously donated her time and talent for the Photo Booth to capture the precious memories! All the photos from the Photo Booth were printed and sent to the various program areas as mementos of a fun night. A huge thank you to all the volunteers… from setting up and decorating the hall, to preparing and serving the food and drinks… this event could not have happened without their help! Our sincerest thanks to AMJ Western Ontario for designating Community Living Cambridge as their charity of choice at this year’s Santa Claus Parade! The parade was held on Saturday, Nov. 21st.

“Don’t let behaviour of others destroy your inner peace.” ~ Dalai Lama

The theme of the float was “I am more than you see” that showcased the lives and achievements of individuals with developmental disabilities. The response was overwhelming! 100 Hats with logos were ordered for pre-registered individuals and was not enough. More individuals joined the parade making our adventure merrier! The weather outside was cold, wet and just harsh but the spirit from all who were thrilled to be part of the parade made this day special! Thanks to all Volunteers that helped and all who participated. Let’s do this again! Thanks to AMJ Western Ontario for selecting us again next year! By Grace Santos Gould

Santa’s Elves were busy decorating in the workshop located at AMJ Western ON. The cheerful elves (made of staff and volunteers) had a wonderful time decorating the “I am more than you see” float and made it magical for all to see! The work was completed in due time for the parade!

Ontario Leadership Consortium workshop was eye opening!

Steven was very nervous in the Beginning, however, he was able to talk and share his experience with the people attending the workshop. He talked about how he is being supported from Community Living Cambridge and how he is being able to grow as a person and how he could see that he has a future and that he is able to accomplish many things with support and guidance.

On October 30th, 2015 Steve Barton, from the Independent Living Choices (ILC) program, was invited to be a part of a panel discussion at the Ontario Leadership Consortium in Guelph. The University of Delaware is running an Ontario Leadership Institute on Developmental Disabilities. The Leadership Institute is an opportunity to come together with other agency leaders to learn from each other, leading experts, self-advocates and their families, and funders. (http:// www.nlcdd.org/olc/olc-week-long-institute.html, 2015). Steven was excited and honored to share his story and how his life changed from being in a group home in Waterloo and moving to ILC and living independently. Steven shared the panel discussion with other self-advocates from other agencies. Steven was very nervous in the beginning, however, he was able to talk and share his experience with the people attending the workshop. He talked about how he is being supported from Community Living Cambridge and how he is being able to grow as a person and how he could see that he has a future and that he is able to accomplish many things with support and guidance. Steven received numerous compliments about his personal experiences and accomplishments. Many people were touched about the different and difficult situations that he had to sort out during his short life. Steven “opened” many people’s eyes with the reality that of how a youth feels living in a youth group home. Many directors were not aware of how participants feel after being restrained many times and how this impacts their lives. After the meeting, Steven said that he feels comfortable talking about his life and letting people know about his experiences. Steven expressed that he is willing to participate again in another panel or workshop and talk about how his life changed and how Community Living Cambridge is supporting him to become the person he dreams of being. By Luis G. Jiménez, ILC Counsellor

In May of 2015 Community Living Cambridge started its first social enterprise (see below for definition) venture: property maintenance. Property maintenance at the main office as well as at a commercial property next door, Galt Animal Hospital, provided an opportunity for 5 individuals to showcase their skills in the area of lawn care. And so, Grass Assassins was born! Several weeks had past when Dr Ridout, the owner of Galt Animal Hospital, called to say she wanted to pay more for the lawn care services, as the crew was doing such a wonderful job. (*Happy dance here!) There were skills that needed to be learned, hard physical labour that needed to happen and equipment that needed to be repaired. It wasn’t always easy; adjustments needed to be made along the way. We all learned from this experience. Finally, after all the leaves had fallen and the final clean-up had been completed, our crew was done for the season. A lot of hard work had happened over the summer, not all of it was fun. But hard work pays off, and while the property on Hespeler Road looked pretty great, the best reward of all was when the last bill for the Grass Assassins services was delivered to the Galt Animal Hospital; Dr. Ridout told us, “We are so happy with the work those guys did. Sign us up for next year!” Submitted by Teresa Medeiros, Community Options Social enterprises are businesses owned by non-profit organizations, that are directly involved in the production and/or selling of goods and services for the blended purpose of generating income and achieving social, cultural, and/or environmental aims. Crazy for Cupcakes This fall, Community Networks Classes & Clubs, baked up something different... fancy cupcakes! Each month we select a different recipe to bake, decorate and enjoy. It’s all hands on deck: measuring, mixing and licking the beaters. While the cupcakes bake in the oven, the tea kettle goes on and the conversations carry us until it’s time to start decorating. The finished cupcakes are packaged for home so everyone gets to take home their tasty treats to share. In October we made Oreo Cupcakes and in November we made Stiletto Shoe Cupcakes. YUM! Employment Facilitation Network of Cambridge & North Dumfries When employers go above and beyond to help people in their community obtain work experiences, training and employment opportunities, it is important that they be recognized for this great effort. This was the case for Grand River Brewing. As a committee member of The Cambridge and North Dumfries Employment Facilitation Network, Supported Employment Services nominated Grand River Brewing for an Employer Recognition Award. The recognition breakfast is sponsored by The Region of Waterloo and The Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington Dufferin (a member of Ontario’s Employment and Training Network) and is hosted by the agencies that form the Employment Facilitation Network. " T h e m e a n i n g of l i f e i s t o f i n d y o u r g i f t . T h e p u r p o s e o f l i f e i s t o g i v e i t a w a y . " ~ P ab l o P i c a s s o

It has been a busy fall and Holiday season. We recruited many new volunteers and called on our current volunteers for recreation programs, for the OLG Bingo fundraising program, for the Santa Parade float decorating and for our recent Participant’s Christmas Dance. Volunteers are very important to us. They are critical to all our programs. We try very hard to ensure that they know how much we appreciate the time and effort they give to our agency. So please say “Hi” and “Thank you” to our volunteers whenever you have a chance.
