LEANING ON FAITH ◗ Community

comes together for young heart transplant patient By Phil Major The Community News

T

hough the Dylan Hancock story is still being written, the 15-yearold heart transplant recipient from Aledo is already the center of two amazing stories. The first is Dylan’s journey through rapidly declining health, to the lifesaving surgery and sometimes difficult recovery. The second is the way a community came together to support Dylan and his family through times more troubling than most will experience in a lifetime. Dylan retains a positive outlook on his situation and the lessons he has learned. “It’s the best experience you could have,” he said. “You get to meet some awesome people and encounter things you never thought possible.” He said that, because of his experiences, he is more inspired about what he wants to do with his life. Dylan missed almost a year of school, from the time his illness made him too weak to continue, until his recovery was sufficient that he could return. 2 May

Rob Helms, left, has served as a mentor for Dylan Hancock through the ordeal of surgeries

He admits he struggled when he first came back, after the holiday break, but now he’s “got the hang of it.” His mentor, Rob Helms, who met Dylan through the Aledo schools’ Connections mentoring program when Dylan was a 7th grader, said the school district has been “unbelievable” in its support of Dylan. “There are a number of people who are passionate about what they do,” he said. Dylan says he is focused on his school work, and glad that he has time to catch up with what he’s missed. He would like to go into medicine or engineering and is encouraged to hear about the new science, technology, engineering and math partnership the AISD has formed with Bell Helicopter. He also wants to be able to get back to playing sports. A recent set back has him on limited physical exertion, which doesn’t sit well with a young man who loves to be competitive. Dylan’s experience has changed his perspective about some things. When he hears his friends complain about something, he likes to chide them about what he’s been through. Most of them “go with it,” he says, and realize they don’t have it so bad. When Dylan and Rob met, Rob noted that Dylan had some issues in his life. But by the end of 7th grade, Dylan was figuring out some things and heading on the right track.

and changes in housing.

By the 8th grade he was liking school and making good grades, and having confidence in his abilities. But during 8th grade football prac-

tice, he experienced breathing difficulties that at first were blamed on his asthma. But an x-ray at an emergency care center revealed an enlarged heart, which led to the diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy. By January 2013 word came that Dylan would need a transplant to survive, and March 13 he had to quit school – something he did not want to do. He spent three weeks in the hospital, some of it in a coma, flew by medical helicopter to Houston, and after a 12-hour operation had a left ventrical assist device installed to help his heart work better. The transplant came in August. The community rallied to raise the $40,000 to donate to the Children’s Organ Transplant Organization to help with all the non-insurance costs of a transplant, such as travel and housing. But that was not the last challenge. As part of the post-transplant program, patients have to undergo complete immune system suppression, to help combat organ rejection by the body. Dylan and his mother, Mondee, lived in a manufactured home that once belonged to his grandfather (who died in 2008). As Helms explained, it was nearing the end of its life expectancy and wasn’t suitable for Dylan’s condition. He was concerned, as was Mondee, and it didn’t make economic sense to try to renovate the house. That’s when the next level of community effort came in. As for Dylan, he says “everything’s been good.” He has had a couple of rejection issues, which, though not uncommon, can always be scary. And that will be monitored closely, with return trips to Houston monthly for testing. “We have had the opportunity to lean on faith in the face of challenges, and I have learned a lot from him about courage,” Helms said. www.community-news.com

WHAT IS CYSTIC FIBROSIS? Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that: • clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and • obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond. Symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis People with CF can have a variety of symptoms, including: • very salty-tasting skin; • persistent coughing, at times with phlegm; • frequent lung infections; • wheezing or shortness of breath; • poor growth/weight gain in spite of a good appetite; and • frequent greasy, bulky stools or difficulty in bowel movements.

DANI’S DOLLS ON THE MARCH ◗ Aledo teen raising money,

awareness in fight against Cystic Fibrosis By Phil Major The Community News

W

hen the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Walk, “Great Strides,” is held May 18 in Arlington, Aledo will be well represented by Dani’s Dolls. Aledo sophomore Danielle Gray, 16, and her family and friends are participating. The 5K walk around Six Flags gets under way at 9 a.m., and you’ll find Danielle there among the walkers, along with a host of friends. Danielle’s Mom, Coleen, says

Danielle has a great group of friends who support her, such as reminding her to take her medicine. This will be the Grays first time to participate in the walk. As Coleen explained, for many years she avoided the cystic fibrosis community, trying to shield Danielle from some of the negatives of the disease, such as a shortened life span and the related medical issues from having breathing and digestive difficulties. But as Danielle has grown and learned about her disease, she has faced dealing with all that. Through Twitter and Instagram, she now has friends around the country with CF, and she has lost some of them to it. Cystic fibrosis is a rare condition that is passed on genetically. DANI from page seven Soon after Danielle was born, Coleen noticed she had a tremendous appetite. Coleen’s mother commented that Danielle seemed to have the same symptoms as her older sister, Coleen’s aunt, who had CF and died at the age of 12. There are only about 30,000 people in the U.S. with CF and 70,000 worldwide. Its chief impacts are breathing difficulties brought on by excess mucus formation and digestive problems related to the pancreas’ inability to produce the necessary enzymes. Now that Danielle understands her disease, Coleen said it’s time to help raise money for research, and more importantly, to raise awareness about the disease. As she noted, you wouldn’t think Danielle was “sick” just to look at her. “She is full of life,” Coleen said. She seems a normal, healthy teenager. There are tell-tale signs, but nothing most people would notice. Coleen credits some of Danielle’s good health to an active lifestyle. “She doesn’t use it as a crutch,” Coleen said. “I push her. I don’t want her to think ‘Poor me, I’m sick’.” Danielle enjoys volleyball and dance. She’s looking forward to prom – two nights before the walk. Danielle says after she has been working out, she feels much better. She would like to play softball. But outdoor activities in

All About Kids

the spring and summer are problematic. She can’t be outdoors when the ozone level is at orange or higher, as that can contribute to breathing difficulties. Her daily routine includes breathing treatments, a vest which helps shake loose the mucus twice daily, and six enzyme capsules with each meal. Danielle still has a healthy appetite. She has three brothers, and said she often will clean their plates for them if they don’t. Once or twice a year, she checks into Cook Children’s Hospital for what she calls a tune up, to help her with her lung function. The family works hard to keep things positive, Coleen said. “I want people to see this kid, at 16, who’s only been in the hospital four times,” Coleen said. “I would have loved to have met someone like this (when Danielle was diagnosed),” The Grays want to make their first time at the walk “huge.” Already more than 30 have signed up for the team. To donate just visit the fightcf.cff.org website and donate to Dani’s Dolls. You can also learn more about Danielle’s story, and about CF.

What your kids bring home from camp By Misty Luttress Camp Fire

I know what many parents are thinking: “Kids bring home dirt, bugs and dirty laundry.” But when your children go to camp, they come home with so much more. I was 12 when I first attended summer camp in Sweetwater. I had to sell a lot of cookies, but I was excited to finally be going to a “real” camp and not just pitching a tent in the backyard. I went swimming, did arts and crafts, cooked over a campfire and had a carnival night on “the slab” (a transformed sport court) and I learned how to make friendship bracelets. It was hot, dirty and the best week of my life. After that, I knew that when I grew up, I wanted to be a camp counselor. In college

a friend asked me if I wanted to work at a summer camp with her - my answer was a resounding, “Yes!” That was the summer of 1999 and I have been at camp in some capacity every summer since. Over the years my camp location has changed, my position within camp has varied, and the staff and campers may change, but one thing remains constant – what I see the campers take with them when they leave. Confidence: For many campers it is the first time to make decisions on their own. Campers are able to choose their activities at camp, allowing them to take ownership of their experience at camp. This gives them the opportunity to set a goal of what they want to accomplish during the week. Courage: Camp provides

a safe and supportive environment for campers to step outside their comfort zone and try new things. Camp is a place that allows a camper to think outside the box, safely try new skills and explore. This newfound courage opens the door for a camper to learn how to be a friend to someone new. Leadership: Camp provides opportunities for campers of all ages to step into leadership roles. Within a cabin campers work together to clean and aim for the clean cabin award, plan activities and make decisions on how they spend their afternoon time. All camp activity allows campers to get to know other ages and provide opportunities to lead through games and events. Community: With no phones, televisions or video games as distractions, campers

are left to find someone to go play. Camp offers the opportunity to be active outside in a safe environment. During the non-scheduled activity time campers can find a cabin mate to play cards, make up a game, braid hair, or shoot some hoops. Meal times provide campers and staff the opportunity to sit around the table as a camp family and share stories. So yes, camp can be hot, dirty and buggy, but camp can be a life changing experience. I see it in myself, my camp friends, and the staff but most importantly in the campers.

Misty Luttrell is a 15-year veteran and director of overnight and family camps at Camp Fire Camp El Tesoro in Granbury. She is a former camper, counselor and camp advocate.
