Above the curve w Aledo Middle

School seventhgrader Weston Adams recognized by Duke University for academic achievement

By Tony Eierdam The Community News

Scoring better than 90 percent of high school students on the SAT, Aledo Middle School seventh grader Weston Adams has earned Grand Recognition by Duke University and has been invited to a special ceremony at the prestigious academic university. Weston and 15 other AMS students recently took the SAT college admissions exam and were recognized through the Duke Talent Identification Program through the university’s grade talent search. He is the son of James and Ginger Adams of Aledo and has an older sister, Cassie, who attends Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, Fla., and a younger brother, Jackson, who is in fourth grade. Weston placed among the top three percent of all Duke TIP participants. The ceremony at Duke will be similar to a graduation with a keynote speaker and each honoree called onto the stage to receive a medallion and shake hands with dignitaries. There will also be special activities for the students and parents. 2 May

Aledo Middle School seventh grader Weston Adams has earned Grand Recognition by Duke University and has been invited to a special ceremony at the prestigious academic university. Adams will also attend a three-week intensive course study this summer at Trinity University that is sponsored by Duke.

Weston, who takes preAP courses at AMS, said he enjoyed the experience and challenge of taking the SAT. “There were a lot of questions that I did not know how to do so I just skipped them,” he said with a smile. “There was a reading section, a writing section and a math section. I scored highest in reading. “The hardest part of the SAT was the reading section.

It was kind of a struggle, but I still enjoyed it. The math section was also hard. There was a lot on it that we (seventh graders) have not been taught how to do yet. I just skipped those. “It was kind of scary taking the test at first, but after awhile I thought it was kind of fun.” Weston said he is always reading a book and feels his voracious reading helped

him on the test. “I like reading pretty much anything,” he said. “I guess I like fiction the best. I am reading “Lord of the Rings” now. I love reading. I spend a lot of my free time reading. Once I finish a book a lot of times I reread it. I like to do that so I can pick up on some things I might have missed the first time. I have been reading as long as I can remember.” www.community-news.com

Weston’s mother, Ginger, explained how they found out about the Duke TIP recognition program. “We actually got a notice from Duke TIP, and they looked at his scores from elementary school and it asked if he would take the SAT,” she said. “I have no idea how they got Weston’s name. I don’t know if they (Duke TIP) contact all the schools for a list of names of kids with outstanding grades, I don’t know. “The first we heard of this was when we were notified by Duke. Duke has all these programs, and we didn’t know about this. Our daughter also took the SAT in seventh grade, so we knew about seventh graders taking the test, but what they are trying to do is identify the top students so they can bring them to their summer programs.” Weston will participate in a Duke-sponsored summer program in San Antonio at Trinity University. The program pairs seventh graders with eighth graders and provides courses and residential activities geared toward the students to enhance and enrich their experience. The students will focus on one course for three weeks. The Duke TIP courses are fast-paced and intense, often equivalent to one year of a high school course or one semester of a college course. They are designed to provide challenge, not remediation, according to Duke The Community News

University. Weston will be getting a well-rounded experience as instructors will employ strategies to engage and challenge students. Ginger Adams said along with Duke, TCU, SMU, Vanderbilt and Northwestern State University (Natchitoches, La.) have invited Weston to their talented and gifted summer programs. “They have three-week intensive programs to where they go and they live on the college campus for three weeks while taking an intensive course. It is geared toward gifted kids his age.” Weston, who plays trombone in the AMS band, will miss a band trip to attend the recognition ceremony at Duke. Although the band trip is a big deal for those in band, Weston has a mature take on his situation. “I have to miss the band trip, but that’s OK,” he said. “I would rather go to Duke. There will be other band trips in other years.” Ginger Adams said she and her husband knew at an early age that Weston was intellictually ahead of most kids his age. “Weston knew all his letters, sounds and phonics at about 18 months,” she recalled. “He could identify everything and he was starting to put together words. He has always loved letters and reading and those sorts of things. “He has always had a

very big vocabulary, and he has always been very verbal.” Weston is not all about books. He and his father are working on restoring a late‘60s Volkswagen. “I like to work out in the garage with my Dad,” Weston said. “We are working on a car right now – an old Volkswagen Bug that I am going to drive when I am old enough. “We have taken it apart and will rebuild it. I like that kind of thing. It is a challenge and a lot of fun. I like figuring that kind of thing out.” Weston has spent every school year in Aledo, including kindergarten. He added that despite the attention from the universities he is nowhere near making a choice. “I like it at Aledo schools,” he said. “I like the way they teach us. There are good people here. I really am not thinking about where I am going to go to college. I am not ready for that. I still want to be a kid. I like being a kid.” Not surprising, one of Weston’s favorite TV shows is Jeopardy. “I watch Jeopardy, and I know some of the answers,” he said. “There are a lot of hard questions, and I like it when I can answer a question, especially when the contestants can’t answer it.” Ginger Adams is excited to enroll Weston in programs that suit his accelerated needs. Weston will also attend a special recognition program at TCU that honors Texas students for academic achievement. “TCU is having another recognition ceremony for Texas kids,” she said. “The Duke ceremony is the ‘Grand Recognition Ceremony’ and

the TCU ceremony is Texasonly kids. We are going to both. TCU has also given Weston a scholarship to audit a regular summer college class. “This has been all brand new to us since we found out about (Duke TIP),” she said. “We are still trying to see what is all out there, what opportunities are there, and there are actually more opportunities than we thought for kids like Weston. “I am excited about this. Being a gifted kid – and gifted kids are really wired differently – to have something that is specifically geared toward gifted kids is really valuable. He will be able to study with other gifted kids and meet other kids like him. “It’s something they don’t necessarily get in a public-school setting. I am not saying anything against Aledo ISD – Aledo ISD is fantastic and we love living here and him going to school here – but we are really thankful for an opportunity to meet other kids and live with them and really get to know other kids that are like him.” May 22, 2015 3

Playing at Carnegie Hall By Phil Major

Alyson Kessinger just played Carnegie Hall. And four days after the performance, she was still wideeyed about the experience. The Aledo 12-year-old took part in 32nd Birthday Gala with the New York Pops, which included a performance by the Camp Broadway Kids. Alyson, who attends the Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts and is completing sixth grade, sent in an online audition for the camp in March and found out a few days later that she was one of the 62 performers to win a slot, of 500 who tried out. You might say Alyson was excited to get the news. “I was screaming in the car,” she said. She and her family, dad Kris, mom Jeannine and little sister Lindley who attends Stuard Elementary, spent five days in Manhattan. Alyson spent three full days rehearsing for the performance, which was capped by an all-star tribute to Kathleen Marshall and Rob

Marshall, well-known directors and choreographers. Her group performed “76 Trombones” from “The Music Man” and the ending from “Cabaret.” Of the experience, Alyson

said, “It was really, really cool,” At every turn the kids were surrounded by broadway talent, from artistic director Tony Parise to the costumer from the “The

King and I.” Performing is nothing new for Alyson, who is auditioning for parts in theaters around the Metroplex. Coincidentally, the day of her interview in Aledo, she

had just auditioned for “The Music Man” at the Artisan Theater. She has performed many other roles, including “Annie” at Casa Mañana. And of course the FWAFA has performances going on all the time. There are musicals put on by each level – elementary (“Suessical” this year), junior high and high school – along with ballets (the most recent was “Alice in Wonderland”) and cabarets. “The stage is booked all the time,” said Jeannine. Alyson has attended FWAFA since third grade – first year that students can enroll there – and plans to finish her schooling there. She hopes to perform with the Singing Girls of Texas in junior high and high school. “I love my school,” she said, and especially likes her choir teacher. Mom says they have talked to Alyson about coming to school in Aledo, but she is committed to FWAFA. “If your kid loves the arts, and that’s their passion, it’s a fabulous school,” she said. Alyson likes the emphasis on the fine arts. Her schedule includes dance, art, music and theater in addition to her academic courses. The Kessingers moved to Aledo from Grand Prairie

Students With A Purpose got underway at McAnally Intermediate School in Aledo this year, the students take on projects around the school and the community.

McAnally students find a purpose in service By Phil Major

The Community News

Students With A Purpose launched at McAnally Intermediate School this semester, and already the student service club is making an impact on campus – and beyond. While McAnally has long been known for service, this may be the first time the effort has been funneled into an organized group. “Our kids step up,” said organizer Sara Reed, and the campus has a reputation for helping with various community projects. Her full-time job is to teach technology applications at the fifth and sixth grade campus. The Community News

She has taught in Aledo for 10 years but spent her first year in the Birdville ISD, which had a similar group. “I called them to find out about it,” she said. “It’s a neat idea. It involves service, and all the kids can be involved.” With lots of assistance from Trisha Huffman, the school counselor, Reed made a proposal to Principal Bob Harmon to set up the program. With fifth graders coming to McAnally last fall, many of whom had been at elementary campuses with student councils, there was not a program in place to match it.

Plus Reed and others had been hearing from some parents who asked about having a student service program. Student council is a time intensive program, Reed said, involving leadership training and summer activities. With the SWAP program, students volunteer their time, primarily before school. So far about 70 are involved. They have to maintain a grade average of 80 or above as well as a satisfactory citizenship grade. They meet as a whole on a monthly basis, and various committees usually meet weekly.

All About Kids

In addition to undertaking special projects, the committees give students regular duties. For example, the Student Ambassadors help monitor the hallways before school and assist with campus tours and welcome bags for new students, to help them feel at home. The Shine Patrol makes sure the teachers lounge “shines” with cleaning and decorating. Reed said the students have made a tremendous difference in sprucing up the lounge. May 22, 2015 7

The Shine Patrol is also in charge of lost-and-found items. After encouraging students to claim their items, those unclaimed each six weeks are boxed and taken to the Center of Hope clothes closet. Reed said the McCat Meteorologists have taken to their job of reporting the day’s weather during morning announcements, coming in each morning to check the forecast. The Green Team is in charge of the school’s recycling program and has earned money though cartridge recycling. Others help the school counselor and the librarian. And the students made motivational posters for the STAAR state achievement test. But the results of one of

year with a big Teacher Appreciation Week breakfast. When students return

in the fall, they will have a chance to join SWAP again. Reed thinks that with this year’s fifth graders returning

to the program as sixth graders, it will take off in the fall, and students will have more input into community ser-

vice projects. “We hope to have them in charge of it,” she said. The following teachers chair the subcommittees, and without their willingness, SWAP would not be possible, Reed said.
