◗ Aiden Maloy, cancer-

free and a “very busy guy” By Jennifer Retter The Community News

Last summer, 3-year-old Aiden Maloy struggled through a drawnout and frightening medical journey. Maloy, with the support of his parents, Nora and Robert, and sister Hailey, went through a series of five surgeries. In May of 2012, doctors set out to address what they believed to be polyp, an abnormal growth of tissue, in Aiden’s bladder for the first surgery. Initial joy of the benign status of the polyp faded quickly when doctors found additional tissue, and then additional tissue again. Additional polyps, additional surgeries and more health scares culminated on September 7, when doctors told the family Aiden had a cancer called Wilms’ Tumor in his kidney. The final surgery to remove Aiden’s

right kidney was on September 12, five days before he turned three years old. He began chemotherapy and radiation treatments the day after his third birthday. Last year’s Thanksgiving Trot, a project developed by Rhonda Torres and her son Josh, raised funds for Aiden and his family, bringing Aiden’s story to the front of community members’ hearts and minds. “We are so thankful to everyone in the community,” said Aiden’s mother, Nora. “It was all put together so quickly.” With the support of the community tacked on to his supporting family, Aiden underwent a total of 25 chemotherapy treatments. Now, Nora is happy to report that Aiden is cancer-free. His CT scan on March 28 came back clear, finally giving the family a reason to celebrate. “He continues to be monitored, and he’ll go back again in a week or

two,” Nora said. “His hair is all grown in now.” Doctors will implement a followup treatment plan in the coming weeks. “He’s just trying to make up for lost time,” Nora said. “He has a lot of energy now. He’s a very busy guy.” Though happily cancer-free, Aiden’s health struggles remain with him. In December, just before Christmas, Aiden was diagnosed with diabetes. Nora said the family manages by doing everything they can. She said the community support helped the family so much that she wants to give back, too. The Maloy family plans to get involved in this year’s Thanksgiving Trot. “We’re excited to help someone else out in the way that they helped us,” Nora said.

ALEDO

Aledo, home of ‘best ice cream in the world’

By Jennifer Retter The Community News

Mayor Kit Marshall called it “the best ice cream in the world,” and ice cream scooper Carli Birkeland knows Marshall got it right. “It’s a great place where people can come together and enjoy yummy ice cream,” said

Birkeland, the daughter of Scoop Me owners. “A lot of kids come after school and hang out, and then go play at the park across the street.” Kids also flock to the giant white chair outside the shop, a perfect place to sit and eat ice cream while parents snap photos. Popular ice cream flavor choices include wedding cake, triple Oreo and dinosaur egg, a vanilla ice cream with blue coloring and colored marshmallows. “A lot of kids ask for it,” Birkeland said. “It gets really messy.” Scoop Me, linked onto Hot Chocolate Boutique next to the Aledo Community Center on Old Annetta Old, also offers hot coffee, frappacinos, smoothies and milkshakes.

The ice cream shop just added Dippin’ Dots to the menu this spring. Birkeland said the family business started first with the boutique, then expanded when the family saw a need for more activities in the Aledo area. “There’s not much to do in Aledo,” Birkeland said. “If you wanted to go on a little family trip for ice cream, you had to drive to Fort Worth or Weatherford.” Look for Scoop Me at First Fridays all summer. The shop will sell ice cream at each event to keep kids cool. For more information, call 817-441-6650 or visit the shop at 215 Old Annetta Road. JENNIFER RETTER/THE COMMUNITY NEWS

iHelp Bearcats Learn expands Coder Cats’ vocabulary ◗ NHS students lend voices

to program By Jennifer Retter The Community News

When senior Annie May Denny joined the Aledo High School National Honor Society last school year, she thought her future may lie in education. Denny, along with her friend Megan Gomba, joined the education committee. “I knew I wanted to get involved in tutoring kids,” Denny said. “I like the way you feel when you lead someone and help them out.” Now serving as co-chairs of the Education Committee, Denny and Gomba lead students in outreach activities and partner with Coder Elementary’s iHelp Bearcats Learn program. “NHS members can come and record themselves reading picture books,” Gomba said. “The recordings are put on donated iPods in the Reading Centers at Coder, so the students can listen while

they follow along in the actual book.” Of the 125 books available for the project, the NHS students recorded 60 so far. The iHelp Bearcats Learn Program, the brainchild of third grade teacher Michelle Johnson, came about as a way to update Coder’s audio book library. “We had books recorded on cassettes and CDs, which are not as easy anymore,” Johnson said. “With iPods, it’s easier to put new books on them.” Johnson said she sees the benefits of the program firsthand among Coder Cats. Kindergarteners through third graders can access the books, and Johnson hopes to start recording nonfiction books for older students soon. The Coder iPod lab accepts donated iPhones, iMacs and iPods for the project. Students can drop off donations in Room 107. To fund the books for the project, Johnson collects recyclable electronics and complimenting items (GPS devices, ink cartridges, digital cameras, laptops, etc.) at Coder.
