A ride on the mild side

Volunteers making USA Games possible By LeXie yeaRLy The 2014 Special Olympics USA Games are set to begin June 14 in New Jersey, and it wouldn’t be possible without the thousands—yes, thousands—of volunteers organizing, staffing and cheering on the athletes at the games. An estimated 10,000 volunteers are expected to be on hand, working in nearly every capacity imaginable during the weeklong festivities, set to take place primarily in Mercer County. For some volunteers, it’s the chance to see what Special Olympics is all about on its grandest scale. While the New Jersey Special Olympics games happen every summer, the national games

are hosted the same way as the traditional Olympic games—every four years, with a new location each time. For others, it’s a chance to get involved, give back and witness the importance of the events. Terry Veit-Harmening is planning to keep herself busy during the week of the national games, as she is set to serve as the venue manager for gymnastics at Peddie School—a perfect fit, considering managing a gymnastics venue and working with Special Olympics have been two of her primary focuses for years. Veit-Harmening, who owns Envision Gymnastics studio in Eastampton, began working with Special Olympics 28 years ago,

and said the role she’s taken on as a volunteer is one she’s quite familiar with. As the venue manager for the national games, the Bordentown Township resident will be in charge of everything that happens at Peddie. There are individual volunteers responsible for each area, but she will be the main person making sure all the moving parts come together. Her responsibilities extend to organizing transportation and making sure lunch is served to checking that equipment is set up, the music is working, scoring results are inputted and more. It’s what she does on a regular basis at her own gym, Veit-HarSee VOLUNTEER, Page 6

Dog park opens in township Hanna’s Bordentown Dog Park opened in Northern Community Park May 10. The fully-fenced dog park is located at the rear of the baseball fields and encompasses 200 by 100 square feet of open grassy field divided into two areas — one for large and one for small dogs. Bordentown Township Mayor Stephen Benowitz opened the park with a ribbon cutting ceremony. During the grand opening, special recognition was given to The Nutro Company, a pet food manufacture who provided the Room to Run grant for the park and Bordentown resident Roger Plew who donated generously to the park in honor of his dog Hanna, for whom the park is named. Jill Popko, who spearheaded the grant application, said township dog owners needed a place for their pets to finally run free.

Dogs got to roam the park at its grand opening May 10, 2014. “Our pup loving community of well over 800 dogs will now have a place to enjoy the great outdoors in a safe, clean environment,” Popko said in a statement.

Bordentown Regional High School students labeled bottles of alcohol at Boyd’s Pharmacy and Discount Liquor during the Sticker Shock event May 1, 2014. The Burlington County Coalition for Healthy Communities along with local students organized an alcohol awareness event that left liquor store patrons in “sticker shock.” Florence and Bordentown Regional High School students placed stickers on alcohol products at area liquor stores to discourage adults from providing alcohol to minors. According to the Coalition for Healthy

Communities, Burlington County children begin drinking alcohol between 10 and 12 years old. The Sticker Shock event took place at Boyd’s Pharmacy and Discount Liquor in Bordentown and Florence Wine and Liquor Shop May 1. Student Activities Counselors Nell Geiger of BRHS and John Lamaestra of FHS helped organized the event.

Fieldsboro approves smoke-free parks The Borough of Fieldsboro voted to adopt a smoke-free ordinance for their parks and recreational fields on May 14. The main goals of an outdoor smoke-free ordinance are to protect individuals from the affects of second-hand smoke and to provide good role modeling for youth. The Burlington County Coalition for Healthy Communities and Integrated Municipal Advisory Council partnered with Tobacco Free for a Healthy New Jersey and Mom’s Quit Connection on this initiative. Last year, on World No Tobacco Day, May

31, all Burlington County parks went smokefree thanks to a resolution passed by the Burlington County Freeholders. In Burlington County, there are currently 15 municipalities that have adopted a smoke-free or tobacco free outdoor ordinance, in addition to the county resolution. State-wide, more than 240 municipalities have adopted smoke-free or tobacco-free outdoor ordinances. There is currently a State-wide Smoke Free Parks Bill that has passed through the NJ Assembly and is waiting to be posted in the N.J. Senate.

BUSINESS

Community members welcome at ‘hidden gem’ country club By Ryan S. Murphy For many people, the term “country club” conjures up images of the elite rich playing a game of golf amongst themselves, socially cut off from the rest of the community. But David Wheeler, the general manager of Old York Country Club in Chesterfield, is trying to change that perception. “It’s not Caddyshack, and it’s not what you think. We have different levels for everyone,” Wheeler said. “It’s just normal people having a good time. The social events are fun. It’s a great getaway and a family-oriented place that’s good for kids.” The club, located on Old York Road, was founded in 1996 and purchased by its current owners in January 2013. Wheeler stressed that since he started running the business, he and the owners have been working to include as much of the community into the club as possible. “Whether it’s a part-time casual golfer or a hardcore golfer who goes out there five days a week, we have something for everyone,” he said. “We even have swimming pool-only memberships. There’s always a social event going on, all of which are open to our social pool members. We had our Easter Brunch,

Old York Countr y Club staff members include (front) Alicia Harkins, Melanie Szakielo, (back) Bill Miscoski, Hank Seng, Christian Haig, Jim Vernon and Michael Deal. which was actually open to the public, as well as a Mother’s Day Brunch. We have a lot of social events throughout the year. We’ll have a Memorial Day picnic, a Labor

Day pig roast, murder mystery dinners, and movie nights for kids.” The restaurant at the Old York Country Club is also open to the public, and reserva-

tions can be made from Thursday through Sunday every week. One of the Old York Country Club’s many assets is its unique Gary Player golf course. Gary Player courses are world-renowned for their expert incorporation of the natural landscape and attention to detail. They even include input from the legendary golfer himself. Of course, the quiet location of the golf course is also a plus. “Our golf course is unique in that you can’t tell you’re in New Jersey. You can’t see houses or roads. It’s a beautiful property,” Wheeler said. “Our golf course is tremendous, but the scenery and the banquet hall all make for a beautiful property. For weddings in particular, the scenery is very picturesque.” But the banquet hall doesn’t only cater to weddings. Banquet director Melanie Szakielo, who primarily worked in northern New Jersey before becoming enamored with the Old York Country Club, explained the variety of events that are held there. “We do all sorts of events, including weddings, sweet sixteens, bridal showers, baby showers, and first communion parties. We’re very accommodating to every type of event,” Szakielo said. “As far as the food, the chefs

Leaping Dog Art Studios owner Jennifer Szeto. Leaping Dog Art Studios, a new creative space that offers art classes, art parties and summer camp programs, opened its doors this spring. Art educator and Bordentown resident Jennifer Szeto owns the 1,200-square-foot space located upstairs from Bordentown Open Arts Stage, 146 Route 130 South. Szeto is set to offer family art open studio for ages five and under, drawing and painting classes, cartooning and recyclable art for ages six and up, plus figure drawing and still life painting for adults. The space is also offering Arty Parties — art themed parties for kids — and Painting Parties for adults that can accommodate up

to 25 guests. The party packages include art materials and professional art instruction. Szeto started Leaping Art Studios to bring a unique art making creative experience to the community outside of the traditional public school or formally designated art schools. “The vision for the studio is to provide a shared space where families and neighbors can come together and engage in a vibrant community,” Szeto said in a statement. She has been teaching art for 10 years in and around the Philadelphia and Bucks County region as well as in Central Jersey where she grew up. More information is online at acreativespaceforall.com.

Bordentown native Tommy Potts had a successful season as pitcher for the Rutgers Camden Raptors in spring 2014.

By Lisa Zola-DeLibero Before Raptors’ baseball player Tommy Potts gets on the bus with his college baseball team to head to New York for the NCAA D3 Regionals, he just has to finish one last paper, an analysis on marginal regression in economics. An economics major at Rutgers-Camden, Potts will be graduating this December, and is hoping to take his baseball talents to the next level. “Playing college baseball has been a blast,” Potts said. “Our team has improved so much over the past two years with coach Dennis Barth as the head coach, and a great group of assistant coaches For the first time in the program’s regular season history, we won the New Jersey Athletic College Title.” And Potts found plenty of success himself, too. For several weeks his senior college season, the team captain had an ERA, .64, the lowest in the country. He is 7-1 in the regular season, with a 1.66 ERA overall, helping his team with a season ending 30-12-1 final regular season record. Potts was also selected for the American Baseball Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic All Region Second Team. Rutgers head coach Barth feels that Potts is an “excellent leader” and therefore has made him team captain for the past two seasons. “Potts is a great captain, and commands respect in the dugout,” he said. “He is always ready to pitch when we needed him in whatever role we needed him to be in. I think he

should have been chosen for the all-conference team because he has one of the lowest ERA’s in the country. As far as his pitching talent is concerned, Potts can throw a strike with a fastball or breaking pitch anytime in the count. Very few pitchers can do this. He has incredible ball control.” The decision to attend Rutgers Camden was one that Potts now reflects on as an excellent choice. “I am really glad that I decided to play here at Rutgers Camden,” said the NJCBA Division 2 and Divison 3 all rookie player of the year, and the second team all NJ Athletic Conference Player. “My pitching coach, Josh Coposky, who used to coach at Rider University, has taught me tons. He has taught me how to take care of my body, keep my arm strong, and keep a clear mind. It’s really important to work hard, and to also go out there and have fun.” It was with the support of his dad and mom, Antionetta, and sister Allyson, who plays softball at Rutgers, that Potts made that decision. But it was a lengthy process of finding out his true strengths in baseball before he finally stepped onto the Camden campus in the fall of 2010. Potts, who started out playing t-ball as a youngster, actually started out as a shortstop. He was coached by his dad Tom, who along with Potts’ grandfather helped him to learn more about the game of baseball. Potts also credits his American Legion Coach Tom Dolan and his ACBL Pro-Scout Base-

Scotties’ 4x400-meter relay team enjoying success on the track By Ken Weingartner Dave Misselhorn can list three reasons why the Bordentown High girls’ track and field team 4x400-meter relay squad is so good. “They buy into the workouts, they buy into the team, and they buy into each other,” said Misselhorn, who coaches the Scotties’ sprinters. Of the three, the third might be the most important reason Shakara Siler, Aishah Dukes, Cait Nitschmann and Brianna Pagnani have enjoyed so much success this season. The girls, who entered mid-May undefeated in dual meets, won the Burlington County Scholastic League Patriot Division 4x400 championship with a near-school record performance on May 10. Their time of 4:08.86 was just off the program mark of 4:07.72—which was set last year by a squad that included Siler, Dukes and Nitschmann. “I get really nervous for my individual races, but with the 4x4 I’m not nervous at all because I have so much trust in my teammates,” said Nitschmann, who is a junior in only her second season on the track team. “I think you need to be able to trust each other, to know that everyone is going to work as hard as they possibly can. “We help each other when we’re nervous, just try to calm each other down, and we push each other to be better.” Added Siler, the only senior in the group and

(Photo by Albert Rende.) a four-year performer, “The 4x4 is my favorite part of track. I’m running with three other amazing females, and it’s a fun race. Your adrenaline is pumping and it’s fun to do.” Last year, the 4x400 team finished second at the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group I cham-

pionships and third in the statewide group final to advance to the Meet of Champions. In addition to Siler, Dukes and Nitschmann, that squad featured then-senior Jackie Ansong, who was one of the state’s best hurdlers. Enter Pagnani, a freshman who was

asked to fill this season’s vacancy on the 4x400. Pagnani’s best individual event is the 800, where she won the BCSL Patriot Division championship and a week later finished fifth at the Burlington County Open Championships with a school record time of 2:24.11. “I was nervous,” Pagnani said. “They went really far last year and I didn’t want to let them down. I’m fast, but I’m not as fast as them. They told me not to worry about it because it’s a team. “I’m really happy I do the 800, but I really like the 4x4 because it’s with other people and they’re my really good friends.” Pagnani joined the track team as a way to stay in shape for soccer and basketball, but it’s turned into much more. “I didn’t know in the beginning of the season that it was going to become this big, but it did,” Pagnani said. “It turned into something that became a part of me.” A similar thing happened to Siler when she joined the track team four years ago. “My mom ran track when she was in high school and she wanted me to try it so I decided to give it a go,” Siler said. “I didn’t like it at first, but then I started to get good at it, so I stayed with it. I like working hard and giving yourself a goal and meeting that goal. If you want to be the best, you’ve got to strive to be the best.” Siler finished second in this year’s 400meter run at the Burlington County Open Championships, setting the school record of 58.61 seconds in the process. She also

finished second in the BCSL divisional 200 and 100 this season. A year ago, she finished sixth in Group I in the 200. On the 4x400 team, Siler runs the anchor leg. “That’s the best part,” Siler said. “Everyone is watching. It just puts that pressure on you to run good and to run a good time. Yeah, I feel pressure, but I push myself.” Dukes, a junior, finished sixth in the 400meter run at last year’s Group I finals, but added a new event midway through this season—the 400 hurdles—and excelled quickly. She won the Patriot title in the hurdles and finished second at the Burlington County Open Championships. She also was second in the 400 at the divisional meet. “I think track is fun,” said Dukes, who started running with the Scotties as a freshman. “I didn’t like the workouts at first, but you get through that. I just want to do my best and go all out. I just want to do what I have to do for the team.” Dukes runs the third leg of the relay. Sometimes, though, her work begins before the race. “I try to get the team together and if they’re not confident I try to push them and encourage them,” Dukes said. “I think the key to a good relay, you have to have good quarter-milers and I think you have to have good camaraderie. You have to have good teamwork and be optimistic and confident about each other. “We push each other. We cheer each other on and work together. We work really hard. We’re close to the best time we had last year. I think we have a pretty good chance to

place and go on to [the Meet of Champions]. Nitschmann, who is a standout field hockey player, gets the 4x400 started for Bordentown. She said that she enjoys track thanks to the event. “Because,” she said with a grin, “winning is fun.” Running the opening leg of the 4x400 has its advantages. “You’re done first, and if I run bad everyone forgets about me,” Nitschmann said, laughing. She added, on a more serious note, “Each leg is equally important. You want to be able to get out there and get in a good spot. I don’t think [leading off] is any more important than any other leg.” Although the 4x400 is the team’s focus, the girls ran the 4x800 earlier this season at the Woodbury Relays. They finished third, setting the school record of 10:33. Then they came back later in the day and finished second in the 4x400. “The 4x8 was the hardest race I’ve ever run,” Nitschmann said. “I thought the 400 was hard, and then I ran the 800. After, I was like, the 400 is the easiest race of my life.” Misselhorn says the girls’ willingness to work hard and push themselves is what he most enjoys about them. “What makes a good track athlete is you’ve got to be headstrong, and these girls are headstrong,” Misselhorn said. “They’re going to fight through. I’ve seen plenty of good athletes come through and they couldn’t do it. Runners are a different breed. “This is why I coach, because of people like them. It’s fun to watch them. It’s fun to see them get joy out of it.”
