Mastoris family establishing new traditions in Bucks County after decades in Bordentown

BY RICH FISHER

As Jason Zablow rolled out the balls for the first day of Bordentown High boys’ soccer practice, the coach knew very little about who would play where and what kind of alignment the Scotties might play. But one thing was certain. Lucas Fryc would return at center-back. What filled in around him remained to be seen as the Scotties graduated six starters from an 8-4-2 team. “We’re looking to see how things play out,” said Zablow, whose team opens against Pitman Sept. 7. “We have to see who ends up being healthy, who ends up earning spots next to him and up top as well. If we’re gonna be a team that can score three or four goals we can take more chances. If we’re gonna be a team that’s struggling to score we have to be super strong in the back because that means we’ll be winning a lot of 1-0 games.” As for his alignment, the coach said “We’ve kind of rotated through probably three, four different formations the last few years. We have our ideas. We throw down a 3-5-2, we put out a 4-4-2, a 4-3-3. Usually those things get scrapped at some point and we throw out a new one. Those things all play out See FRYC, Page 10

Teen Mia Nissim bakes goodness into The Kindness Project BY RICH FISHER

As one sits and talks with Mia Nissim, there is a temptation to reach out and poke her in the shoulder just to see if she’s real. Once her existence is proven, the desire to clone her is powerful. This is a woman who has done more for the downtrodden in 17 years than most will do in a lifetime. She’s not worried about a

new car, a new purse or new clothes for herself. She’s more concerned with soap, detergent, deodorant or bread and milk for someone else. To put it succinctly, more Mia would mean less suffering. Entering her senior year at Bordentown Regional High School, Nissim has founded a program called The Kindness Project. While it is currently a generous charity, it will not

become an official nonprofit until Nissim turns 18 and is legally able to start such an organization. She plans on doing just that. But for now, she is still aiding the needy in Bordentown and beyond. Once a week she feeds the homeless at four hotels along Route 130, providing them with four hot meals for the week, along with drinks and personal care products See NISSIM, Page 6

Generations of the Mastoris family put everything they had into establishing and nurturing their reputation as elite-level restaurateurs in Bordentown. Mastoris Diner at the crossroads of U.S. 130 and U.S. 206 was known locally and indeed up and down the East Coast as a great place to get a meal. Now, three generations of the family are establishing new traditions over in Bucks County. First, Alex Mastoris — son of the diner’s founders, Nick and Mary Mastoris — opened a steakhouse, the popular Rocco’s at the Brick, in Newtown. Now, Alex’s son Nick and his son, Alexander, are getting set to open Nikos Restaurant in Yardley. And while both restaurants have the benefit of the Mastoris family’s near century of experience in the business, customers should not expect to walk in and feel like they are in the diner. The hospitality may feel familiar, but the ambience, as well as the menus (with occasional exceptions), will feel all new. See NIKOS, Page 8
