Bassett a leader for Bordentown bowling

As Johnny Bassett roams the halls of Bordentown Regional High School standing all of 6-foot3, he is often asked why he is not on the basketball team. His answer is simple.

“I would never do basketball because I’m not very good at it,” he said matter-of-factly before quickly adding, “And I do have fun bowling.”

The Artful Deposit: a gallery to support working artists

CJ Mugavero is celebrating the 37th anniversary of her Artful Deposit Gallery on Farnsworth Avenue in Bordentown by looking ahead.

In fact, she has recently added a new name to her list of regional and national artists, Lorenzo Chavez. He is a Parker, Colorado, artist known for scenes of the

American West.

“It is indicative of our always trying to evolve and expand,” she says one recent afternoon in her self-described “pocket gallery.”

It’s an apt term for the 250-square-foot space highlighting works by artists Alan Fetterman, a noted Bucks County impressionist and plein air painter; Ken McIndoe, the popular Hopewell abstract figurative

artist; Gennady Spirin, a Bordentown-based, Soviet-born, Moscow-trained illustrator; and Sarah Weber, an Arizona-based expressive animal painter and founder of Cowgirl Artists of America.

There is also the solid work of regionally based artists Hanneke de Neve, Joseph Gyurscak, and Thomas Kelly, all based in Hamilton.

Which is good news for coach Ron Jones and the Scotties bowling team, considering basketball and bowling are both winter sports. Were Bassett to opt for hoops, he would be depriving Bordentown of its top kegler this season.

Through the Scotties 13-2 start, Johnny was averaging 185, with a high set of 647 and a high game of 278. He has rolled 200 or better 11 times after doing it just twice last year, when he averaged 160.

“It’s been my mental game, being in the mind of how to get better as it goes,” Bassett said of his sharp improvement. “I’ve been doing a lot of bowling as of late. I actually work at Hamilton Lanes, so that kind of gives me some ways of how to be better and be stronger. I’ve been watching a lot of bowling lately. I’ve just been doing my thing.”

His “thing” has made him the Scotties most consistent performer this season.

“He’s the only one of the boys that I’ve been counting on all year to have a clean game,” Jones said. “Even in practice he’ll roll a clean game. He makes spares. That’s the big thing, making spares. You get six strikes and no spares and you’re gonna have a 160. He’s always been pretty good at picking up spares. As he gets a little older he gets a little wiser, a little more calm, he’s learning more about himself and about the game.”

Bassett, who also plays baseball, was introduced to bowling by his dad, John, at age 9. He would spend ample time at the now-defunct Papp’s lanes in Bordentown.

“I loved that place very much; it was a very good bowling center for me,” Bassett recalled. “The owners knew me well, all kinds of stuff like that. I was like ‘Yeah, I gotta get in more bowling from now on.’”

And so he did, getting into league play when he was 15 and staying there ever since. Bassett currently bowls in a singles league and a doubles league (with his dad as his partner) at Hamilton. He got his job at the Scotties home

PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY

Peripheral Neuropathy is a condition that affects millions of Americans, commonly resulting in pain, tingling, numbness, and other painful symptoms in the hands, legs and feet. This pain changes your life and affects how you work, how you play and how you live.

AllCure Spine and Sports Medicine is pleased to announce their new program for treating Peripheral Neuropathy, which includes a combination of advanced FDA-cleared treatments with breakthrough technology that aids in healing the damaged nerves. The effects of this program can be felt on the first few visits. This treatment restores, stabilizes, and rebuilds the nerves in your extremities. Treatment has also been effective in addressing painful symptoms of arthritis, MS, and other forms of chronic pain. Patients generally feel relief physically throughout the treatment period and even feel better emotionally after experiencing a reduction in pain.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE NERVE DAMAGE?

Peripheral neuropathy is the consequence of damage to your peripheral nerves. There are over 100 different kinds of peripheral nerve disorders or neuropathies – some are the result of a disease like diabetes, while others can be triggered by a viral infection. Still others are the result of an injury or compression on the nerves. No matter where the problems begin, it is imperative nerve disorders are resolved as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage. Many people suffer with pain for years, not realizing that their symptoms may be due to Peripheral Neuropathy. Symptoms start gradually, then get worse, including numbness, burning or tingling sensations and sharp, electrical-like pain. Treatment options have been limited to a small assortment of pain medications, which can lead to further issues. Ignoring the problem or masking the symptoms has never been a viable solution. If you suffer from any of the aforementioned symptoms, we can help.

AROUND TOWN Theater company displaced as parish declines to renew lease

Pegasus Theater Company, founded in 2016 at the West Windsor Arts Council and revived in Bordentown last year, had found a home in the former St. Mary’s School — but things have changed, as detailed in a statement released last month by the company founders, Jennifer Nasta Zefutie and Peter Bisgaier.

“Pegasus is starting the new year with some disappointing news: Mary, Mother of the Church Parish has informed us they are not renewing our shared space agreement, which permitted us to produce our shows in the empty gymnasium of the former St. Mary’s School. Because our current agreement expires in March, we’re compelled to temporarily suspend the remainder of our season.

“The Parish’s decision came as a complete shock to us at Pegasus. But we are committed to staying in Bordentown City and are already actively working to move to a new location. We hope to be able to make an announcement about that new location and the continuation of our sea-

son very soon.”

Theater classes set to start in January at St. Mary’s School went aheadas planned, and Pegasus said that it hopes to announce a new location for its planned summer theater camps in March.

“Our transition out of the old St. Mary’s School will require us to incur a lot of unexpected expenses we haven’t budgeted for this year, including technicians to map our lights and a moving crew to dismantle and remove our truss. If you’d like to support our move, please consider making a donation,” read the statement.

“Pegasus Theatre Company is so grateful for the warm welcome and support we’ve received from the local community, leaders, and the Downtown Business Association. But most of all, we’re so grateful for you, our loyal patrons and audience, for your continued support and participation. We so look forward to sharing more exciting news with you very soon!”

Settling back in a vintage loveseat and lit by the sun coming through her main street front window, Mugavero — who replaced her given name Cathy Jo with just the initials —- says she opened her gallery in February 1986, in an old bank building in Allentown — hence the gallery’s name.

It was after that location started to get attention and her business grew that she opened another branch in Bordentown in 1997.

Seeing the history-rich town attracting visitors to its restaurants and shops, she concentrated her business downtown, on Farnsworth Avenue, in 2002, seeing her gallery as a destination within a larger destination.

“I sell only regional fine arts,” she says about her enterprise that was originally housed in a larger and more expensive location across the street. “We pride ourselves on getting people familiar with original art and that you can live with this product and that you can pass it on. I selected everything in here.”

She then turns reflective and says, “I wanted to be a gallerist that could actually support living, working artists and their estates.”

Noting that a few artists have been with her since the start, she says it is a

“partnership” that has seen “marriages, deaths, floods. We’ve gone through life together.”

The daughter of a tool and die maker father and homemaker mother, the selfdescribed “100 percent Sicilian” says art was part of her early life in Butler, Morris County.

“While my family was blue collar, we had original art in our house, we were Italian. I remember my aunt and uncle, he worked in the city, he’d buy original art. I remember when he bought an owl sculpture. I was fascinated. So I had some strong connection. It was the creation of building something. I was fascinated with building. My family were masons. (And) I always had a strong affinity and connection to the earth.”

Her personal connections and high school art classes fed her interest in pursuing an arts-related career – but there was a dilemma.

“My parents weren’t sure of an arts degree, but I didn’t want to be an educator and was always good with theory,” she says of her decision to study art therapy at what was then Trenton State College (today it is The College of New Jersey).

Another reason was her self-assessment of her own artistry. Although she participated in exhibits in the Princeton area, she concluded, “I’m an okay artist.

I’m a solid ‘B’ artist.”

After graduating in 1981, studying in England, and getting her footing as an intern at Skillman Training School for Boys, Mugavero says her entry into the art therapy field was thwarted when federal program support funds were slashed and hiring stagnated.

A stint with a temp agency led her to Dow Jones in South Brunswick, where she says, “I realized I wasn’t going to get a therapist job and developed a relationship (with the company). I got promoted and ended in credit and collections for the ad agencies for the Wall Street Journal; I would go and collect money.” * * *

Eventually she wanted to mix her art background with her new found business experience and started thinking of a gallery. “I looked for space and called a former colleague at Trenton State. She was a realtor and brought me to the bank building.”

For artists, she had to look no further than those with whom she had exhibited or met along the way: Robert Sakson, Wendall Brooks, Marge Chavooshian, N.J. Devico, de Neve and others.

She says within a few years the gallery was attracting attention for the caliber work of work shown and within five years strengthened with the engagement of the

nationally known Arkansas-born artist Joseph Williams Dawley. He had moved to Cranford.

“Joseph William Dawley was my career-changer. Other artists wanted to be where Dawley was. (He) put my gallery in a different league; people had already known of him. He was represented in Washington D.C. Time Off (the Princeton Packet weekly magazine) gave us the cover,” says Mugavero.

The result was that serious collectors from Princeton and Newark took notice of the gallery and its offerings.

Mugavero says she feels fortunate to attract artists and wants to do well for them.

Additionally, she notes, “I don’t want an artist I can’t promote or market well. Artists should be creating and doing all they can do. I should be marketing them. I can boast about them. That is my job.”

Her job has also been to keep the gallery alive and productive.

“For the first years of the gallery I had a lot of learning to do. I had a lot of tough experiences,” she says. “We have been through recessions, and 9/11 was a frightful and scary time.”

Interestingly enough, she says, during those times, people wanted to ‘come home’ to traditional art and supported the artists and gallery.

Covid was another challenge. “You realize you’re a veteran,” she says about maintaining a business during a pandemic. “Young entrepreneurs were coming to me and looking as if they were hit by a truck. I said, ‘There is no handbook (to get through the problem). We’ll fight and figure it out. And in the future, when the next thing happens, (young entrepreneurs) will come to you.’”

She posits that such problems stimulate “a creative side that comes to you, like protecting a child. The Downtown Bordentown Association was an example: we all pulled together, business, city and city residents.”

The DBA reference also reflects the gallerist’s involvement with the community. She is a member of the DBA, Bordentown City zoning board, and Bordentown Arts, a nonprofit founded by her husband, Leon Stanley, whom she met when he visited her gallery.

Mugavero then turns her thoughts to patrons. “In the 1980s and ’90s, (purchasing art) was about unlimited prints. But I have seen a trend where people want to own and build their own fine arts collection.”

The allure is that a person can own “a work that cannot be reproduced. You’re the only one in the world who owns this piece of art,” and “when a piece of art

goes home with someone, there is excitement about it” and the artist.

She also notes that buying art from working artists does not have to be

expensive. She says she started her own collection of art for $75 and offers lowprice work to help others to do the same.

Looking forward again, Mugavero

talks about finding new ways to connect potential art collectors with art and artists.

One is an art dinner and private showings for 25 people at a local inn. “I will bring in still lifes, and we’ll have an artsinspired meal, that’s an experience. It isn’t a traditional art opening. I’m trying to develop experiences where people are exposed to art.”

Now putting her business and self in perspective, Mugavero says, “This is a luxury item of sorts. When the economy falters, people will need milk and bread, they are not going to need this at that time. You have to be in (this business) for the long haul. Some of it is up to the gods. But it is a partnership and a relationship with the artist.

“I am a very grateful person. And I am grateful people are investing in us. They’re part of the reason we are able to continue.”

Then, while gazing at a painting-filled gallery wall, she sums it all up with the simple statement: “To live with art is the only way to live.”

lanes in September working the register, cleaning, getting balls out of the gutter and glamorous things like that.

Just being in that bowling environment seems to rub off on him.

“It’s really been helping me be more happy in bowling and getting to know more people very well,” he said. “And I get to compete every single week. Everybody likes me there, and they like my bowling game also.”

When he gets the chance to throw some practice games, with no pressure on having to produce a high score, Bassett likes to tinker on his game.

“I want to work on some tips to make sure that my ball is reacting to what it should do,” he said. “It doesn’t matter my score. I throw 50 miles an hour, a lot of the other kids throw 60 miles an hour. I’m like ‘Why that fast?’ I throw 50 miles an hour and I get 10 straight back.”

Jones likes the fact that Bassett is an old-school bowler who goes against the norm of the modern game.

“He’s just a different type of bowler,” Jones said. “He’s the old style, onehanded bowler; whereas 90 percent of the rest of the team is all bowling two handed. He’s much more able to control his ball when you get later into matches; when the oil patterns are starting to get pushed all over the place. He’s still able to hold a steady line, whereas the other guys bowling two-handed, it gets to the end and they don’t know where the ball is going. They roll it and hope.”

Bassett has always been anxious to better himself, and was never afraid to ask for help. As a freshman, he would go to his father and other team parents for advice. He also tapped into sophomore Sean Horner, one of the team’s better

performers, for advice.

“Sean’s actually one of my best friends,” Bassett said. “He taught me a few things about how to be yourself, stay in control of your game. A lot of the parents I talked to gave me pointers. It helped.”

Bassett bowled just 13 games in ninth grade and averaged 153.

“He definitely had potential,” Jones said. “He was willing to listen. He would listen to anybody that came along. He’s a willing listener and willing to do what somebody suggests to see how it works.”

Love Poems of the Past and Present

When a poet’s rhymes come from romance, each line penned by a writer eager to spin a sentimental song about their feelings or commit a lover’s visage to verse, the piece can live on past its era of origin.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, so does an event honoring a trailblazing local figure whose sense of activism and homeland pride was an amorous endeavor in itself.

Frances “Fanny” Isabelle Parnell (1848–1882), an Irish poet who expressed her nationalistic pride through writing and political action, came to Bordentown, where her mother’s ancestral home was, in 1874.

Dubbed the “Patriot Poet,” Parnell later passed away at this Mercer County family estate, but her literary devotion lives on in the Bordentown Poetry Project.

In recognition of Parnell’s contributions, as well as those of five noted regional and state writers—Ellen Foos, Luray Gross, Roberta Clipper, and Todd Evans—the FP Poetry Project will host a free February presentation and limited open reading

at Bordentown’s Old City Hall on Sunday, February 5, at 2 p.m.

Dan Aubrey, a Bordentown-based writer, U.S. 1 Newspaper Editor, and arts coordinator, will host.

The initiative is organized by the Bordentown Old City Hall Restoration Committee’s “Cultural Vision” project, which was formed last year as a subcommittee of the volunteer group dedicated to rehabilitating the building at 11 Crosswicks Street.

So why not get equally lost in the words of yearning from yore? The long legacy of love poems published by the area’s earlier contributors, which evoke everlasting tenderness, are a fitting match to Bordentown’s more modern compositions.

Editor’s Note: A number of these older poems ran in a previous issue of Community News Service’s weekly Princeton metro area paper, U.S. 1, in February 2020 as “A Vintage Literary Bouquet for Valentine’s Day” by Dan Aubrey.

Regenerative Medicine/ Stem Cell Therapy. Regenerative medicine is a fastgrowing, highly developed treatment that helps the body heal or rebuild itself. Dr. Patel uses stem cell therapy to treat ailments, particularly low back or neck pain, caused by degenerative vertebral discs or joint pain in the shoulders, hips, or knees caused by osteoarthritis. The patient’s stem cells are removed, purified, concentrated, and injected into the injured or weakened tissue. Stem cell therapy can also speed recovery and help avoid surgery.

Cannabis Therapy. The legalization of medical marijuana has brought new treatment options. “We are very excited by the potential of cannabis-based treatments and we comply fully with New Jersey’s evolving regulations,” says Dr. Patel. He uses a local dispensary to provide treatments, which include edibles such as gummy bears and cannabis-based rubbing and vaping oils.

her own, married lawyer Richard Stockton, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

The well-connected couple called a property in Princeton, Morven, their home. William Penn, Richard’s grandfather, had given him the land, and Annis decided to name the mansion after the Gaelic word for “big hill.”

Morven served as the state’s first governor’s mansion before it was historically preserved in honor of its many cultural and artistic contributions.

Annis expressed her feelings in verse as she awaited her husband’s return—first from his general travels, but especially following his imprisonment by British forces during the Revolutionary War.

Despite the two’s eventual reunion, Richard died only a few years after his release.

The Disappointment! (1756)

An Ode to Mr. Stockton

I see my kind protector come To soothe my throbbing heart to rest.

He breaks that cloud’s o’erspreading gloom

And chases midnight from my breast.

No tis not him a shadowy sprite. So like my lover met my eyes

Some angel left the fields of light Touch’d with compassion at my sighs.

No more he joins the Social band

Around my cheerful fire side

Where friendships fascinating wand

Once made his hours serenely glide. Tis not for me that voice to hearWhence sprightly wit and manly sense

Can floe to charm the brow of care And wisdom’s choicest gifts dispense.

But he shall live within my heart — His image all my Joy supply And when death hurls the fatal dart I’ll bear it with me to the sky. Yes see the blessed hour arrives

Ev’n now the peaceful clime I view When gentle love and virtue thrives And souls their lapsed powers renew.

No disappointment enters there — The tender heart no absence pain —

For love refin’d is angels’ fare — For love eternal ever reigns.

Ellen Foos is a Princeton-based poet and the founder of Ragged Sky Press, a publication that “has historically focused on mature voices, overlooked poets, and women’s perspectives” since 1992. She is also a past editor for the Princeton University Press.

Evening Out (for Blossom Dearie)

We’re out to celebrate, me and Stan, in our modest way. Sure, other day-trippers are doing the same, having a little fun too, we’ll try not to spoil the scene.

Once we lived here, drank the water, bought cheese on the Avenue. Now to catch a little romance we overpay, wedge our way in, sport last year’s couture. We may hold hands and when the piano plays lean back, adjust our chairs. If we miss the revolution or get to it late someone please hold the door.

Henry Van Dyke was a theologian who graduated from Princeton University— where he would later teach English—and the Princeton Theological Seminary in 1873 and 1877, respectively.

A Presbyterian minister by trade, Van Dyke also wrote poems and short stories. He began his career by reading his works “aloud to his congregation in New York as sermons,” according to his Britannica biography.

While these pieces share a similar theme, the first is written as a sonnet.

Love (1902)

Let me but love my love without disguise,

Nor wear a mask of fashion old or new,

Nor wait to speak till I can hear a clue,

Nor play a part to shine in others’ eyes,

Nor bow my knees to what my heart denies;

But what I am, to that let me be true, And let me worship where my love is due, And so through love and worship let me rise.

For love is but the heart’s immortal thirst

To be completely known and all forgiven, Even as sinful souls that enter Heaven:

So take me, dear, and understand my worst,

And freely pardon it, because confessed,

And let me find in loving thee, my best.

Love in a Look

Let me but feel thy look’s embrace, Transparent, pure, and warm, And I’ll not ask to touch thy face, Or fold thee with mine arm.

For in thine eyes a girl doth rise, Arrayed in candid bliss, And draws me to her with a charm More close than any kiss.

A loving-cup of golden wine, Songs of a silver brook, And fragrant breaths of eglantine, Are mingled in thy look. More fair they are than any star, Thy topaz eyes divine — And deep within their trysting-nook Thy spirit blends with mine.

The Love Poem I Haven’t Written for Paul

After all this time, the love poem

I haven’t written for you had nearly given up hope, not realizing it didn’t need to be constrained or controlled, could swoon or soar if it felt like it.

Though it’s been terribly timid, lately it’s been practicing a quiet whistle, rather like the hum in the ears of a fifth-grade girl coasting her bike down

a hill that’s barely a hill, just enough slope to keep her upright

without pedaling. There’s no breeze except the breeze her moving body teaches the air as she passes through it.

This poem wants that girl to know she owns something no one else does,

wants her to feel the ache, only enough to be sure.

The poem might start singing at any moment, quietly as first, trying this word and that, a phrase or two, just something to get a rhythm going. It might be hard to hear, but if you stay still and lean in, I’m sure you’ll hear it call out your name.

Francis Hopkinson, known as Bordentown’s own Founding Father, signed the Declaration of Independence just as Richard Stockton did.

As “America’s first poet-composer,” the humorous harpsichordist worked in law and on his lyrical abilities.

When not working as a judge, Hopkinson wrote original secular songs, which the subsequent poem became, as well as satirical pieces.

Give Me Thy Heart

(1789)

Give me thy heart as I give mine, Our hands in mutual bonds will join, Propitious may our union prove, What’s life without the joys of love?

Should care knock rudely at our gate, Admittance to obtain, Cupid shall at the casement wait, And bid him call again!

Give me thy heart as I give mine Our hands in mutual bonds will join, Propitious may our union prove, What’s life without the joys of love?

joyed, For ever panting and for ever young.”

— John Keats

Letters typed four hundred miles away spatter the white screen like the sunflower seeds he throws across the snow for hungry birds. You are a woman, clearly, he types back, who lies about her age. How could she be older than the long-haired girl who sat beside him in his Montreal Peugeot trying to stop him from behaving as her elder, the teacher she has told him she has now herself become?

Oh for the belief in a religion that bears us once again to the moments when we did not act. Then might he be a boy, his beard mere shadow on his icon of a face, his heart unbroken, and hers the one inscribed with past betrayals, propriety that would not let her love.

It might be her car then, her hand, the back of his neck, and she the one who says, “It’s time for you to go.” But he said it. And she went.

How innocent they were, discussing Keats’ unravished bride, the boy who longs for consummation,

and the luck they had to stay in love because they had no chance of falling out of it. Let us grow new memories on memories we do not know we have. Let us pray for an incarnation in which both of us are still nineteen, our hearts intact, and our hands not yet touched enough to not yet touch.

Philip Freneau, a sea captain with a proclivity for poetry and politics, was the staunchly Jeffersonian editor of the “National Gazette.” His narrative style earned him the moniker “poet of the American Revolution.”

Freneau, an alumnus of Princeton University, spent a significant amount of time at sea on trade voyages. He likely wrote this poem lamenting the waves of separation between him and his wife, Eleanor Forman.

According to “The Poems of Philip Fre-

neau,” a free eBook by Project Gutenberg, “To Cynthia” first appeared in print with two variations before the author settled on this final version.

Before opting for “Jersey,” Freneau’s initial line spoke of “Monmouth’s,” the county where he lived, and then “Morven’s vale” as a homage to the Stocktons’ famous Princeton estate.

To Cynthia (1789)

Through Jersey groves, a wandering stream

That still its wonted music keeps, Inspires no more my evening dream, Where Cynthia, in retirement, sleeps.

Sweet murmuring stream! how blest art thou

To kiss the bank where she resides, Where Nature decks the beechen bough

That trembles o’er your shallow tides.

The cypress-tree on Hermit’s height,

Where Love his soft addresses paid By Luna’s pale reflected light — No longer charms me to its shade! To me, alas! so far removed, What raptures, once, that scenery gave,

Ere wandering yet from all I loved, I sought a deeper, drearier wave. Your absent charms my thoughts employ:

I sigh to think how sweet you sung, And half adore the painted toy That near my careless heart you hung.

Now, fettered fast in icy fields, In vain we loose the sleeping sail; The frozen wave no longer yields, And useless blows the favouring gale.

Yet, still in hopes of vernal showers, And breezes, moist with morning dew, I pass the lingering, lazy hours, Reflecting on the spring — and you.

Why am I Losing My Hair?! Am I alone? Hair loss (alopecia) is an extremely common problem that affects millions of people in our country. There are two broad categories of hair loss — scarring or non-scarring — with many subtypes within each category. However, the type we tend to see the most is called Androgenetic Alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss). This form of hair loss affects roughly 30 million women and 50 million men at any given time. In male pattern hair loss, by age 25, 25% of men are affected. This number increases to 50% by age 50. In female pattern hair loss, by age 30-49, 17% of women are affected. By age 50-69 this number jumps to 25% of women. What causes Androgenetic Alopecia? Usually there can be a strong genetic component to this form of alopecia from either one’s maternal or paternal side. Additionally, elevated levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) are also involved in the pathophysiology of this condition. In women, hormonal imbalances due to pregnancy, menopause, etc, can also play a contributory role. Furthermore, having conditions such as vitamin deficiencies, thyroid dysfunction, certain autoimmune diseases, and others may play a significant role in exacerbation of androgenetic alopecia.

What can I use to treat Androgenetic Alopecia?

Most commonly, a combination treatment approach under the guidance of a Board-Certified Dermatology is recommended to achieve optimal

results. As this condition is progressive, treatment will have to be for life to maintain results. Common medical treatments include nutraceutical hair vitamins (not just high doses of biotin) that address the various contributing factors to hair loss, minoxidil (which helps to stimulate hair growth), and hormonal medications like finasteride

or spironolactone. Additional procedural treatments such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment, low-level light therapy (LLLT), and hair transplantation have shown great results enhancing hair growth by working synergistically with medical treatments.

What’s new in treating Androgenetic Alopecia? Alma TED device is an ultrasound-based system with a proprietary Tip engineered with Impact Delivery that offers a non-invasive, pain-free, in-office treatment option to treat hair loss. Combined with the TED hair care formula, patients can expect to see improvement in hair growth, hair thickness, and hair anchoring (less shedding) while improving its shine and strength.

Hair loss is a very common issue that can have many different causes. It is important to be evaluated by your Board-Certified Dermatologist to develop a treatment plan that is right for you to help achieve optimal results. If you are looking for guidance, look no further than Aura Dermatology in Robbinsville and Somerset, NJ. Let us help you live life in your best skin.

• Find Their Spark.

Y camp is a place where kids can develop skills, confidence and new friendships. While camp is a summer rite of passage for kids to play outdoors and learn to swim, they are unknowingly rewarded with personal development skills by participating in their favorite activities and by trying activities they have never tried before. In general, they will leave camp with a stronger sense of identity and a better idea of what they love, which may help them in the classroom, in their relationships and to choose a career path in the future.

• Find Their Sense of Wonder. Kids get to discover all the wonders of the outdoors while

making friends and forming memories that will last a lifetime. A recent article from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia stated: “Scheduling time to actively play outdoors sets a natural limit on the amount of time your child can spend with a device (such as TV, smartphone or video game). “It promotes active engagement with their peers and the natural environment, and helps them develop respect for the world

for students of all levels, from Kindergarten to Algebra 2 and High School Geometry. Course offerings include:

- Math for Grades 1 - 6: These courses hone students’ analytical skills and enhance their number sense by introducing them to abstract concepts.

- Preparation for High School

Math: Our courses in Algebra and Geometry will build up prerequisite skills and front-load the key concepts

of High School Math.

- Contest Level Math: Students are introduced to non-straightforward problems- opening them to the intrigue of math in the world. Students are also prepared for various national and international math competitions.

Regenerative Spine and Pain Institute

Treating Pain with PRP and Stem Cell Therapy

Pain.

It gnaws at you. It drains you. It becomes the focus of your life.

Experiencing a few pain-free moments can be euphoric; it makes you realize how long you’ve been living with aches and pain. You might wonder how you can find a solution to relieve the pain and regain your freedom from discomfort.

Dr. Ronak Patel at Regenerative Spine and Pain Institute wants you to know there are two new revolutionary answers to pain relief.

Both platelet-rich therapy — otherwise known as PRP — and stem cell therapy give patients new hope by using the body’s powerful healing power to accelerate the battle against pain. Dr. Patel has seen incredible success implementing these cuttingedge treatments on hundreds of patients suffering from pain-related issues.

So if you are suffering from any of the ailments below, there’s a lifeline.

• Osteoarthritis

• Rotator cuff tear

• Back pain

• Meniscus tears

• Tennis elbow

• Disc herniations

• Tendonitis

• Neck pain

Here’s the best news: Neither PRP or stem cell therapy involves drug use with side effects or any surgical procedures.

Both PRP and stem cell treatments use the body’s own healing resources to repair diseased or damaged tissue — and the results are quite remarkable.

PRP therapy involves injecting concentrated platelets and growth factors into damaged tissue to

stimulate the faster growth of new healthy cells. Platelets are cells that prevent and stop bleeding. If a blood vessel is damaged, the body sends signals to our platelets to get on the job and start the healing. Some call platelets the body’s natural bandage.

So how does PRP therapy work? It’s basically drawing a one small vial of blood from the patient and then using a centrifuge to turn it into a potent and concentrated form of platelets. It is then injected back into the patient. Think of it as a boost of your own blood — only superpowered.

Recovery time for PRP therapy is far shorter than for surgery. Patients usually experience soreness for a week or so, but the gradual improvement soon begins. Unlike a steroid shot, which gives you immediate relief and quickly wears off, a PRP patient will see pain symptoms improve over a period of months, and up to 80 percent of patients will see relief for up to two years.

Stem cell therapy can be an even more powerful way to harness the body’s healing power. Stem cells are the building blocks for every cell in our body. These powerful cells can be harvested to produce powerful new cells to fight inflammation and disease.

For those suffering from osteoarthritis, stem cell therapy has proven very effective. That’s because the stem cells may help develop new cartilage cells and suppress inflammation. Stem cells can be harvested through a sample of body fat or bone marrow or be harvested from donated umbilical cord tissue.

And yes, you can even augment PRP therapy with stem cell therapy for an even bigger boost!

Stop wondering if you’ll have to live with your pain forever. Contact Regenerative Spine and Pain Institute today at 609-269-4451 or go to www.njpaindoc.com to book an an appointment and learn more. See ad, page 3

BI-MONTHLY NEWS FROM CAPITAL HEALTH

Capital Health Regional Medical Center Nationally Recognized as a Leader for Social Responsibility, Patient Safety

Capital Health Regional Medical Center (RMC) recently earned recognition from the Lown Institute as one of the most socially responsible hospitals in America. In the Lown Hospital Index, a report by the Institute that evaluates more than 3,600 hospitals across the nation, RMC received an A grade and ranked 4th out of 61 hospitals in New Jersey based on several key metrics that measure social responsibility. Among those metrics, RMC ranked number one in New Jersey for patient safety and racial inclusivity, number three for health equity, and number five for overall inclusivity. The report also ranked RMC among the top 100 hospitals nationally for health equity, patient safety, and racial inclusivity.

“Capital Health Regional Medical Center has been a leader in providing high-quality, equitable care to the people of Trenton and surrounding areas for more than 130 years,” said Dr. Eric Schwartz, vice president of Community Health and Transformation and executive director of Capital Health’s Institute for Urban Care. “This ranking by the Lown Institute validates the hard work of our staff and reaffirms our commitment to community health in Mercer, Bucks, and Burlington counties.”

“America needs socially responsible hospitals,” said Dr. Vikas Saini, president of the Lown Institute. “That’s why it’s so important to lift up these high-performing hospitals as examples for others to follow.”

The Lown Institute, founded in 1973 by Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Bernard Lown (developer of the defibrillator and cardioverter) is an independent, nonpartisan organization that conducts research to help bridge the gap between existing public policy solutions

and improved access to care for all Americans. The Lown Hospital Index is the first ranking to assess the social responsibility of U.S. hospitals by applying unique measures such as racial inclusivity, avoidance of overuse (how well hospitals avoid unnecessary tests and procedures), and pay equity (how well hospital staff are paid compared to executives), among others. Data sources include Medicare claims, CMS patient safety data and hospital cost reports, among others.

Capital Health Regional Medical Center has a long history of serving central New Jersey and Lower Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The hospital includes a state designated comprehensive stroke center (part of Capital Institute for Neurosciences), the Level II Bristol Myers Squibb Trauma Center (one of only 10 designated trauma centers in New Jersey), and Mercer County’s designated Emergency Mental Health Services Center. RMC also provides inpatient and outpatient radiology services, dialysis, and numerous other medical services. To learn more, visit capitalhealth.org.

If you or a loved one is having a severe heart attack caused by prolonged restricted blood flow due to a clot or ruptured plaque, Capital Health’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab is ready to provide an emergency stent placement.

Johnny became a regular as a sophomore and, after a disastrous 74 in his first game of the season, went on to average 149 with a high game of 195 to close out the campaign.

He hoisted his average by 11 pins last year, and has exploded this season thanks to working with Dave Klein, who runs the Hamilton Lanes pro shop.

“He’s been my mentor. I’m getting better and better with him and he really is a nice guy,” Bassett said. “He wants me to bowl more so I get into that higher average level. His work is unbelievable. I like him, he likes me. That is one of the reasons why my average is better today. It’s mostly Dave and just how focused I am to be with my teammates.”

His focus is not just on getting high scores to support his team, but also on helping the guys around him improve; much like the older bowlers helped him while coming up.

“He’s working with a lot of the kids,” Jones said. “Between him and (senior) John Murphy they’re keeping the younger kids up and helping them as best they can.”

One thing that can’t be taught, but is imperative to have, is a steady demeanor. Much like golf, a bowler has to ignore

a bad ball and look to the next one. Once the mind takes over, the body can under-perform.

Bassett doesn’t let that happen.

“He’s one of the most easy going kids in the world, that’s part and parcel of what keeps him going,” Jones said. “I’ve had some other hot heads that are long gone, they start missing and they just start changing things. You leave a 10 pin, you change your ball; you leave your nine pin, you change your ball again. You leave a seven pin, you change your approach angle, or you go faster, you go slower. Johnny stays with it. Steady, easy going. When he misses he knows he missed, and he knows why he missed and he makes adjustments.”

Bassett credits his father for that mindset.

“That’s something I’ve always done,” he said. “My dad actually told me that ‘If you have a bad frame, don’t worry about it, just move on.’ It’s gonna happen to a lot of bowlers and I know that. Even if I throw the ball too fast and I’m missing the pocket, as long as Your hand and footwork are in good position, it’s OK. No matter what, you’ll still have bad shots in three or four frames. It’s still all good.”

Good enough to keep Bassett off the basketball court and in the bowling lanes.

The Manual Training and Industrial School: diplomas and sunrises

Following the abolition of slavery by federal lawmakers, African-Americans strived to construct a new order on the foundations of the old. Those born into bondage as well as those who were not, were now citizens of the land and given the meaningful tools to vote.

Furthermore, their established birthright enabled them to build the first schools of public education for their children. Although racial equality was considered a hollow message of hope, these segregated institutes of learning were valued threads of in the tapestry of our changing country. The curricula offered emboldened young minds with the opportunities that defined their potential and influenced their livelihoods.

One such institution was the Bordentown Manual Training and Industrial School. Founded in 1886 by a former slave turned minister of the African Methodist faith from South Carolina named the Rev. Walter A. Rice, the school began in two modest wood-clapboard homes on West Street with an enrollment of 10

students. With spiritual guidance, he strongly believed that the stability of family influenced a person’s character and that a good home environment molded its dynamics.

Known as the Bordentown Normal School, the facility struggled for the first eight years of its existence, as it was supported through private contributions. Despite financial hurdles, attendance grew to 42 pupils (20 boys and 22 girls). Limited by space, the dire need for its expansion looked no further than the former estate of Admiral Charles Stewart, the commander of the U.S.S. Constitution (nicknamed “Old Ironsides”) during the War of 1812. Situated on a hill between Bordentown and Fieldsboro, in 1894 the State of New Jersey leased the 400-acre farm and woodlands (initially 25 acres) and enacted a law that recognized the school with a new name: the Manual Training and Industrial School for Colored Youth.

By 1897, the school’s relocation was complete. Four years later, the state legislature appropriated $20,000 for the construction of school buildings. With funding in place, qualified planners and architects were hired to design and

develop a first-rate campus with a central administration building, classroom and trade buildings, an auditorium, dormitories, and framed dwellings for faculty. Since agriculture was an integral component of the school, livestock consisting of 80 head of cattle, 60 hogs, and 17 horses were housed in barns and cared for in the fields. During warm weather, students with baskets in hand were able to pick delectable fruit from the orchards.

Eventually, 30 brick structures were spread across the landscape, creating the most unique junior and senior high school in New Jersey and perhaps the region. It was deemed an educational utopia. Every morning as the sun rose, many students were able to gaze out of their dormitory windows and witness the movement of shadows of trees as they stretched across the fertile terrain like misshapen scarecrows.

Not many schools captured such a dramatic view.

With the school’s relocation in place, the state-appointed board of trustees voted to replace Reverend Rice as principal in 1897. Considered a watershed moment, the new leader chosen was James Gregory, a professor from Howard University. Under his direction, the student body doubled as enrollment went from 55 pupils (32 boys and 23 girls) to 116 pupils (59 boys and 57 girls).

As a prestigious manual training school, many gifted African-American students from New Jersey and other states applied to attend. Gregory improved the curriculum that Reverend Rice had started by including both literary and manual elements. Morning classes were subject to reading, writing, grammar, geography, and arithmetic while afternoon and Saturday classes pertained to “hands on” sessions such as farming practices, metalworking, and woodworking for boys and dressmaking, sewing,

and cooking lessons for girls.

From decade to decade, the daily schedule for a student didn’t change much. According to the school’s Board of Information, each student paid and entrance fee of $10 plus $15 for first month’s boarding. This included the cost of uniforms. Boys wore khaki apparel in the style of the military whereas girls wore white shirtwaists and blue skirts. Uniforms cost $45-50 for boys and $20-25 for girls.

Officers from the Bordentown Military Institute provided drill instruction to boys as a requirement of physical exercise and discipline. All students attended church services four days a week, and could not leave campus unless accompanied by an adult.

When the grand symbol of the school, the columned Administration Building, was completed in 1903, it became an inspiration that attracted many prominent state officials, including the governor of New Jersey. Among those at its dedication was the state’s superintendent of public instruction, Charles Baxter. Impressed by the surroundings and student body, he later decided to travel to Alabama on a fact-finding mission by visiting the famous Tuskegee Institute.

Meeting with its renowned founder, Booker T. Washington, he returned to Bordentown with promises of the school’s future. It is worthy to note that Washington returned the favor by seeing the campus in 1907 when the New Jersey State Board of Education met there and again in 1913 to pressure state education officials regarding the school’s primary emphasis on job-training. Closely in step with the merits of its “sister school,” the Tuskegee Institute, Bordentown became forever synonymous as the “Tuskegee of the North.”

However, Gregory strongly expressed his dismay that academic classes for

students should be limited. Despite his objections with officials, he had no alternative but to offer his resignation.

In 1915, William Valentine, a Harvard University graduate and school superintendent from Indianapolis, Indiana, was chosen to become the school’s third and longest serving principal. At the time of his arrival, the school consisted of 90 pupils and 18 faculty members. Although the numbers were profound, Valentine worked hard in upgrading the status of the school for secondary education. In a brilliant manner, he articulated his arguments with state education officials in getting what he wanted.

A decade later, there were 320 pupils enrolled in the school (189 boys and 131 girls), By the early 1930s, 400 pupils were enrolled (230 boys and 170 girls). Faculty had grown to 30 members and another 30 were responsible for the buildings and grounds. In keeping with the same philosophy that Reverend Rice preached on the stability of a united family, some faculty members lived in residential homes on campus.

In 1931, a new Vocational Trades Building was constructed for $150,000. As a spacious training center for students learning to become automotive mechanics, its popularity rose quickly. During its first year of operation, 228 automobiles were worked on with 42 vehicles receiving major overhauls. The following year, more vehicles were in need of service as a new dormitory housing 100 boys, was completed on campus. There were also numerous extracurricular options that welcomed students. In addition to

sports programs and clubs, the Ironsides Echo was a school newspaper printed by students.

Although the Great Depression imposed daily hardships on the average citizen, the Manual Training and Industrial School continued to flourish.

In a 1930 report to the New Jersey State Board of Education, Valentine wrote that “it is certain that the school stands higher than ever in the estimation of the colored people in the state.”

By and large, Valentine opened the campus to all community businesses and organizations in addition to students, fac ulty, and their families. Its fine reputation attracted many notable guests that either entertained or were presented as com mencement speakers or lecturers. Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Nat “King” Cole, W. C. Handy, Joe Louis, Eleanor Roos evelt, Paul Robeson, and Albert Einstein were some of the personalities that either spent time on campus for a few hours or a day. Einstein was known to present scholarships to promising students.

Valentine retired at the end of 1950 after serving 35 years as principal. His last several years in office maintained marginal success as New Jersey passed legislative measures in 1947 that all public and state-supported schools become integrated. Despite the words “for Colored Youth” stricken from the name of the school, critics accused him of prolonging segregation by neither upgrading the school’s curriculum nor encouraging white students to attend.

In 1951, Valentine’s successor, James Segear, became principal. He tried multiple ways to revitalize and advocate to the public and the state that the school was an educational necessity. However, the school was met with a fatal blow in 1954 when the U.S. Supreme Court issued its landmark decision on Brown v. Board of Education that ended the nation’s “separate but equal” policy in all public schools. As a result, the Bordentown Manual Training and Industrial School permanently shut its doors following its last graduation of students in June of 1955.

Although the school site now operates under the direction of the New Jersey Department of Corrections, its former glory is just a memory. As the sunrise symbolizes the promise of rebirth, the same is held true for the struggles and triumphs of African-Americans and many other nationalities that continue to inspire and awaken our nation with the passage of time.

After all, every new dawn can bring an offer of change.

Is cardio or strength training better for your heart health?

Ask The Doctor

Everyone knows that exercise is good for the heart. But what kind of exercise is most beneficial for optimum heart health—cardio or strength training?

Hamilton), an RWJBarnabas Health facility, sheds some light on this decades-old debate.

When it comes to cardio vs. strength training for heart health, is one more beneficial than the other?

The scientific evidence is still building around which form of exercise is best to prevent chronic disease. Historically, aerobic (or cardio) exercise was always recommended for heart and lung health with little attention paid to strength (or resistance) training.

What’s clear now, however, is that strength training is as important to heart health as aerobic exercise and that a combination of both yields the best heart outcomes with regard to blood pressure, body composition, fitness, strength and metabolism. In turn, beneficial change in a person’s physiology yields a lower risk of diabetes, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), heart attack and stroke.

What’s the best way to combine these exercises?

Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, a 2018 report from the Department of Health and Human Services, recommends that each week, adults aged 18 to 64 do at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity or an equivalent combination of both. Strength training should be performed at least twice a week on nonconsecutive days to allow a period of rest for the muscle groups being stressed.

How does age affect the type of exercise(s) a person should do?

As we age, safety becomes an issue. The aging adult should do both forms of exercise, but participation should take into account chronic medical conditions, such as musculoskeletal disorders, that may place the individual at risk for injury.

For people at risk for falls or with balance issues, resistance exercises, such as chair squats, heel lifts, rowing, resistance bands, bicep curls and shoulder presses, may be effectively and safely performed. Research continues to support strength/ resistance training for older individuals.

What advice do you have for the average person who wants to start an exercise regimen to improve their heart health?

Recommendations are based on age and whether the individual is new to

an exercise program. First, choose exercise that you may find enjoyable. Second, set realistic expectations for how often and how long you’ll exercise. Third, choose exercises that you can safely perform. Fourth, consider partnering with others for motivation and socialization. Fifth, communicate with your physicians.

Whoever your heart beats for, our hearts beat for you.
