Hopewell Valley YMCA Camp A camp that works for working parents Summer camp is one of the best ways to give children an exciting summer, but it can be a difficult juggling act for mom and dad when camp starts late and ends early. Hopewell Valley YMCA is unique in helping working parents. The day begins at 7 a.m. and lasts until 6:30 p.m., giving parents time to drop kids off without being rushed or having to leave work early. Parents can register for one of three day length options at different price points to fit their particular schedules. “We offer the full camp experience and more,” says Jessica Brown, director of marketing and community development for the Hopewell Valley YMCA. “Unlike many camps, we offer swim lessons daily so that children can become competent at all levels in water safety. We also have weekly field trips to such exciting destinations as the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, the Trenton Thunder or Sahara Sam’s Water Park.” Brown adds, “Our camp sched-

ule also runs longer than others with the week of August 27 to 31 being a special week of field trips every day.” Camp Groups cover ages K-7 and the camp is designed to fit the needs of all campers. “Our sports camps are supported by the Hopewell Valley YMCA’s

Tom Jackson Fund in honor of Thomas R. Jackson, a long-time Pennington resident and dedicated sports enthusiast. The community comes together each year in his honor at our annual Tom Jackson Champion Golf Tournament. Proceeds from the event support Hopewell Valley YMCA’s youth

sport programs so every child can participate and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun, and shared interests,” says Brown. “As a charitable organization, Hopewell Valley YMCA is able to provide financial assistance to our community thanks to generous contributions from our donors. No family is turned away due to economic circumstances.” In addition to traditional camp activities, Safety Town is a community project designed to provide handson safety education for children. A realistic, child-sized town with miniature streets, buildings, crosswalks, and working traffic lights, Safety Town offers an authentic setting for bicycle, pedestrian, and vehicular safety instruction. This oneweek summer program to be held June 25 to June 29 features visits by police, firefighters, paramedics, and other local first responders. Princeton Tennis Program Building Tennis in Our Communities

Tennis anyone? How about tennis everyone, at the Princeton Tennis Program! Since being founded by Eve Kraft and John Conroy in 1954 as a nonprofit, year-round community tennis association to serve the greater central New Jersey region, PTP has established a proud heritage of group instruction to aspiring players between the ages of 5 and 95. During that time more than 120,000 area residents have participated in PTP’s programs. PTP has dedicated itself to attracting new players who might not otherwise participate in tennis; and to pursuing a standard of excellence in teaching and education by encouraging the following: • Healthy Lifestyles - encouraging regular exercise, good nutrition, and self-respect. • Acceptance - accepting diverse backgrounds, styles, perspectives, and cultures. • Sportsmanship - supporting each other's triumphs and tribulations on and off the court.

• Responsible citizenship - making good choices on the tennis court, at home, and in the community. • Quality programming - meeting the needs of all the members of the community, no matter if they are a first-time beginner or a pro. The organization grows the game of tennis by offering highquality group lessons and programs without regard to age, abilities, skill level, or financial situation. PTP offers wheelchair tennis, a free yearround weekly class for players ages 10 to 20 with autism, and subsidized lessons and programs for area seniors. Need-based scholarships and financial aid are available

“Top 50” tennis organization, and the club has been consistently recognized by the towns that it serves. Recreation and parks departments rely on PTP for instructional curriculums as well as court administration and management. Ten years ago the non-profit garnered enough funding to purchase a tennis facility on Washington Road, which has been named the Eve Kraft Community Tennis Center. Spring classes start Monday, April 23. Registration for spring classes and early bird registration for summer camps start Thursday, March 1, at 9 a.m. Early bird registration provides summer camp discounts. Changes made at a later date will void the early bird rate. Summer Classes and Camps run from June 25 to August 24, 2018. So if you live or work in the Central Jersey area, know that PTP has been building tennis in our communities since 1954. Check out what they have to offer at www.ptp.org! Or feel free to call PTP at 609-5200015.

Waldorf School of Princeton Summer Camp Who Will Your Child Be This Summer? Waldorf School of Princeton is pleased to announce its 2018 Summer Camp program, returning to three two-week sessions and deepening campers’ connections to its one-acre organic garden with a farm-to-fork theme that is woven throughout the summer. For Session 1 (June 25-July 6), campers are invited to inhabit the role of the Budding Artist— painting, sculpting, drawing, and engaging in a variety of creative and expressive activities. In Session 2 (July 9-20), we will become Woodland Explorers, investigating scientific phenomena on our 20-acre campus, performing experiments, and discovering the animals, insects, and plants who live in and around our creek. In both sessions, children of all ages will also enjoy encounters in our garden, making delicious snacks from their harvests. Session 3 (July 23-August 3) is when we will activate the Natural Chef in every camper, preparing tasty treats with ingredients grown in our garden, learning about the many uses of the herbs and other native plants on our property, and working with our brick oven. Parents of children ages 4-12 may enroll online through the website, for full- (8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.) or half-day (8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.) sessions. A 10% discount is available for all registrations received by April 30.

All campers explore, create, and dream amidst 20 acres of fields, forests, gardens, and creek; common activities include water play and cooperative games with their groups. A School & Camp Open House will be held Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m. to noon. Attendees may take a tour, speak with camp staff, and sample a camp activity.

Watershed Science and Stewardship Academy For the Aspiring Environmentalist The Watershed Science and Stewardship Academy classes are week-long environmental investigations for high school students designed to invoke a sense of wonder and inquiry of the natural environment in the context of real-world issues. This year’s four exciting offerings are on climate change, green architecture, field science, and clean water, using Next Generation Science Standards. Students will explore environmental careers alongside professors and professionals through hands-on activities engaged in real scientific techniques and conservation projects. The Academies also offer opportunities for students to connect with the Watershed staff and their partners for related independent studies, internships, and service learning credits. Register for one week or all four! Discounts are available for Watershed Members and multiweek registrations! Scholarships are available in each class for quali-

fied individuals. Classes typically run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day depending on trips. If you would like to apply for a scholarship for an Academy week, please inquire prior to registration with Steve Tuorto, director of science and stewardship, at stuorto@ thewatershed.org, or at 609-7373735, ext. 35. Climate Change | July 9 to 13. Discover what drives climate change and the impact of human activities on those drivers in sessions with Emmy Award-winning meteorologist Bernadette Woods Placky and state climatologist Da-

vid Robinson. Environmental Field Science | July 16 to 20. Are you curious about the actions that scientists and environmental groups are taking to study and develop conservation efforts? Enjoy daily outings with the Watershed staff to visit local river and the Jersey shore sites. Learn about the different studies, techniques, and conservation work in ecological field science by participating in them with academic and other professional groups! Green Architecture & Energy | July 23 to 27. The key to a sustainable future lies in current and future

generations learning how to construct and renovate structures in a way that we minimize our impact to the environment. Clean Water Academy | July 30 to August 3. Join the Watershed’s Science Director, Steven Tuorto, PhD, to learn how rainwater mixes with nutrients, pesticides, fertilizers, and many other chemicals we use to create “people pollution.” Also known as “non-point source pollution,” the mixing of these chemical into stormwater runoff is the most serious threat to the future of clean drinking water and healthy river & stream ecosystems. Learn how the Watershed’s Science and Advocacy departments are working on projects that are paving the way for better laws and actions for managing rainwater to keep our watersheds healthy. The Central New Jersey Ballet Theatre is happy to announce auditions for our fall production of Dracula, sponsored by Bordentown Home for Funerals. Casting auditions will be held Saturday, June 2, at 10 a.m. for ages 8 to 10 and 10:30 a.m. for ages 10 and up. “This ballet has a part for everyone from the tiniest bat to the exciting lead roles and we encourage all to attend,” says CNJBT Director Alisha Cardenas. Dracula brings Bram Stoker’s familiar story of the vampire count to life with classic ballet. The CNJBT production will be family friendly and there are roles for both beginner and more experienced dancers. Dancers will learn the ballet at our summer workshops and rehearsals will be held Fridays and Saturdays in September and October. The Intermediate Advanced Workshop will be held August 13 to 24 from 5 to 9 p.m. Beginners Workshop August 20 to 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The performances are being held to benefit the Bordentown Elks 2085 Special Children’s Committee sponsoring special needs children and their families at Camp Moore. Camp Moore provides the children with a traditional summer camp experience while giving caregivers respite. “Halloween in Bordentown is huge, and we are happy to be able to kick off the festivities with a family-friendly production of this classic spooky tale,” says sponsor Robert Pecht of the Borden-

Families may chose a daytime option from 9 to 10:45 a.m. or evenings 5 to 6:45 p.m. Children will learn ballet and tap and will create arts and crafts. town Home for Funerals. “Bringing the family to a performance will be a spectacular start the Halloween season and is an excellent opportunity to help members of our community.” Just in time for Halloween, two shows will be performed on Saturday, October 20. The performances will be held at the Carslake Community Center, located in Bordentown City. “We are grateful for the support of the Bordentown Home for Funerals in sponsoring our production,” states Cardenas. “For the past two years, Bordentown Home for Funerals has sponsored community productions of the winter classic, ‘The Nutcracker.’ We are thrilled to be able to expand our community repertoire and help members of our community.” CNJBT is also offering several camps and intensives this summer. Fernbrook Farms Environmental Education Center A Natural Break from the Digital World The Fernbrook Farms Environmental Education Center combines natural experiences available on a working farm and nature center with environmental learning from the Pine Barrens to the Jersey shore to provide children a break from their digital and suburban worlds. “Once upon a time kids just went out and explored in nature and had fun,” says Brian Kuser, education and summer camp director at Fernbrook Farms. “Nowadays they don’t have the opportunity to do that anymore, and that’s what our camp provides for many kids — the opportunity to get outside and connect with nature and follow their own natural curiosities.” Four structured camp choices are available for children ages 3 to 14, all emphasizing the natural world. The Fiddlehead (ages 6 to 11), Junior Fiddlehead (ages 5 to 6), and Pollywog (ages 3 to 5) camps allow children to explore nature in the farm’s fields, meadows, and creek. Structured activities in

groups of no more than 10 provide an enriching experience that will broaden the child’s world and nurture their connections to nature, history, farm life, and ecology. The Young Stewards camp focuses on agriculture, ecology, and community with visits to the Delaware Water Gap, the Appalachian Trail, state forests, the Pine Barrens, and the shore. “Young stewards are the older campers. We like to think of New Jersey as our playground for the young stewards. They take a lot of day trips based on the themes of the week. For example, during the week on coastal ecology, they are taking trips to the Jersey shore to do hands-on activities at the shore to experience those ecosystems.” Kuser stresses that each week is different, and children can attend as often as they want. “There are so many reasons to love camp at Fernbrook Farms, but my favorite part is seeing the pure joy emanating from a child when they are engaged with nature. I love that it can take on so many different forms at so many different ages.

Maybe it is the 4-year-old getting to jump in a mud puddle for the first time, the 7-year-old catching their first praying mantis, the 10-year-old discovering a new bend in the creek, or the 13-year-old overjoyed with being able to share their nature knowledge with the younger campers.” The staff at Fernbrook Farms love to see the joy radiating from a camper, knowing it is real rather than contrived. “In today’s world so many kids are constantly holding something

electronic, or running through a bouncy house, or finding some other way to have a manufactured stimulus,” Kuser says. “It is gratifying to know that a child’s innocent natural curiosities can bring such joy to them and nature can be the stimulus.” Fernbrook Farms

Hamilton YMCA Discover, Play, and Learn at Camp! Children spend nine months of the year scheduled, tested, and often stressed. The summer brings with it a relaxed schedule and summer camp, where each camper is encouraged just to be a kid! Through PLAY, kids learn to solve problems, make new friends, and discover the world around them which helps them grow. Daily activities range from traditional camp favorites such as arts and crafts, music, sing-a-longs, science lab and dance to soccer, basketball, gaga, volleyball, swimming, and so much more! Summer Camp at the Hamilton Area YMCA is the ideal environment for campers to discover, play and learn. The importance of play at camp 1. Children learn through play. Time spent on the playground teaches campers social and cognitive skills as well as enhances physical abilities such as balance. 2. Play is healthy. Activity such as playing on the soccer fields is critical for children to grow strong and healthy. 3. Play reduces stress. Playing carefree in the sprinklers provides

an outlet for children to release anxiety. 4. Play is more complex than you’d think. How children learn through play has been studied extensively. Following the game rules of GAGA, for example is a form of learning. 5. Making time for play is important to cognitive, language, physical, social and emotional develop-

ment. Campers experience three daily activities periods and two swim periods each day providing plenty of time for as much play as possible. 6. Outside play is critical for exploring the world. Building forts, nature hikes, playing in the sand, and climbing the traversing wall are not only healthy, but build lasting memories.

7. Play comes naturally in a camp setting. Given the time to play, at the pool, at the playground, at the pavilion, children do amazing things! 8. Play is how children learn. Trial and error in a no stress environment provide opportunities that lead to improved self-esteem and lasting success. Children look at camp as a fun way to spend the summer in the sun and splashing in the pool, but parents should understand that camp allows them to reap many life benefits that will follow them through their lives long after the sun has set on their summer camp days. We have worked hard to plan an exciting summer of interesting and engaging camps and fun special events! And, our counselors are second to none, having had extensive training to welcome your children for the summer. For more information, visit hamiltonymca.org/ sawmill-branch. Hamilton Area YMCA

Bordentown CDA A Satisfying Summer for All CDA Summer Program offers a variety of camps and programs that will satisfy the visual and performing artist, the athlete, the adventurer, the leader to be, and the technology enthusiast. CDA Programs are custom designed specific to grade or age, reasonably priced, and offer the convenience and service that parents need. What sets us apart from other summer programs? It is the perfect combination of certified staff that are invested in your children, safe indoor and outdoor facilities, and programs that infuse skills to help strengthen our students in today’s world. Our camps help develop students by incorporating themes such as stress management, team-building, diversity, volunteerism, empathy, self-acceptance, goal setting, leadership, social media safety, and problem solving. Recreational, educational, and cultural learning activities provide enriching and positive summer experiences for children in grades K-4 in the CDA 4 Week Day Camp. The Pre-Teen Camp (PTC) is for incoming and exiting sixth graders and specifically targets the interests and developmental needs of our older campers. Students may attend four weeks of PTC or pair a few weeks with one of our accelerated programs for older students. We are excited to expand our camp to new programs this summer such as a SAT Prep for high school students who have busy schedules during the school year. Ignite Your Spark! presented by Camp Fire NJ, is a unique program

that offers the opportunity to serve our community and provide a rich, nurturing environment for our youth to THRIVE. We are collaborating with Cream Ridge Golf Course to offer a week long Golf Camp. Track Camp, Kids Dig STEM, and an AllDay Sports Camp will give families even more options. CDA’s Jr. Musical Theater Company summer production is “Mary Poppins Junior.” Summer theater presents a unique opportunity for budding young thespians (ages 8-14) to hone and exhibit their craft. Our Summer Stock Musical Theater production is a highly detailed and instructional experience for our high school actors, ages 14-19. This summer’s production is “The Addams Family.” Dr. Fisher and her team of seasoned and committed instructors provide five weeks of Red Cross swim lessons to roughly 300 swimmers at every level — as she has for more than 50 years. What is not captured in the statistics is the community social time practiced by parents, grandparents, neighbors, and friends who gather at the pool for their child’s lesson. This (and Dr. Fisher!) set the CDA Swim Program apart from other swim programs. The legendary retired PMES kindergarten teacher, Ms. Pesce, continues to lead the extremely popular Kindergarten Ready Program. Children entering kindergarten this fall are introduced to a wide variety of readiness activities that prepare them for the kindergarten environ-

ment and the next stage of their educational life. This program raises the instructional bar for our “soon to be” full day kindergarteners. Our summer programs appeal to the interest of all students. There are numerous sports camps for the athlete, art and music camps for those with a creative spirit, technology camps for students who love to problem solve, and adventure camps for kids who love to explore and discover. Most recreation programs and camps are supported by a before and/or after-care component that provides extended childcare or programming from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Bordentown CDA Summer Camp 48 Dunns Mill Road, Bordentown 08505. 609-298-0025 x1200 | cda.asapconnected.com

Mercer County Community College’s Camp College Camps Your Kids Will Love Mercer County Community College’s Camp College is one of the surest signs that it’s summertime. This year will mark the 35th anniversary of Camp College taking over the grounds at MCCC with fun and engaging programs for children with varied interests, ages 6 to 16. In fact, it’d be tough to not find a camp your kids will love. Camp College offers everything from swimming and juggling to science and computers; from arts and crafts to archaeology; from fishing and rock climbing to culinary arts. Looking to give your child a boost through academic summer camps? Camp College has you covered there too. Or what about sea camp? Or golf? Or visual arts? Yep. Camp College offers these programs and more, over eight fun weeks, from June 25 through August 17. On campus, or through field trips, campers get the most of their summer days. “There’s something for everyone

here,” says Rose Fiorello, director of youth & special programs at Mercer County Community College. “And we’re much more affordable than so many other camps. We hear that all the time.” Camp College’s “design your own schedule” approach lets you and your campers choose half-day and full-day camps, and allows you to mix and match. Your child can’t

decide between culinary arts (very popular, by the way) and computer science? Then do both — one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Camp College’s mission, after all, is to provide the finest camp experience for children; an experience that will be remembered for a lifetime. Camp College is committed to quality and excellence in ev-

erything we do by providing carefully designed programs and activities, a dedicated and experienced staff, and a caring and safe environment with state of the art facilities. Through education with an emphasis on hands-on activities and fun, we offer children the opportunity to achieve, to develop self-esteem and self-confidence, and to grow. Each camp is overseen by a highly qualified staff, featuring certified school teachers, guidance counselors, and school nurses. MCCC offers additional beforeand after-camp care if you need to drop your child off before you go to work or can’t get back when your camper’s day ends. Your child can come as early as 7:15 a.m. or stay as late as 6 p.m. And don’t worry, there’s a host of supervised activities to keep your camper occupied, including a recreational swim period from 4 to 5:15 p.m. For more information visit https:// campcollege.mccc.edu or you may call 609-570-3311.

Camp YMCA at Rider University It’s What Summers Are Made Of! Adventure. Swimming. Sports. Fun times with friends. That’s what summers are made of, and this year Camp YMCA at Rider University is poised to provide all that… and so much more…to our region’s young people. Built on an innovative partnership with Rider University, Camp Y at Rider brings together students from diverse backgrounds in Mer-

cer and Bucks counties and provides them with a unique mix of traditional summer camp activities and academic enrichment opportunities. Campers may spend the morning playing traditional sports and the afternoon exploring their scientific curiosity through STEM programming. They may start the day expressing their creative side through pottery and end the day with photography. And a day that includes swimming and water sports could also include multi-cultural activities designed to celebrate the diversity of our region. “By taking a traditional summer camp program and placing it in a

university setting, we are able to provide our campers with an experience unlike any other,” says Trenton YMCA CEO Sam Frisby. “Our kids can explore their talents, make friends from diverse backgrounds, and learn more about the world around them, all while creating lasting memories of summer fun.” Because of the unique partnership between the Y and Rider University, Camp YMCA at Rider is able to offer benefits that no other camp in our area can offer at a tuition rate designed for working families. In a departure from most day camps in our area, there is no additional charge for Beforeor After-Camp Care. Additionally, both breakfast AND lunch are provided for campers in the university’s dining halls as part of their tuition. “We wanted to create a summer camp experience that challenges our kids and is convenient for their families, and I think we’ve achieved that,” Frisby says. “Our first year

was a huge success! We can’t wait to welcome our campers back to Rider this summer, and meet campers who will join us for the first time. Exploring the world around you. Learning new things. Challenging yourself. That’s what summers are made of at Camp YMCA at Rider University.” Camp YMCA at Rider University 2083 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville 08648. 609-920-6534 www.yridercamp.org See ad, page 11.

Little Friends School The Best Kept Secret in Hamilton

SkyZone Hamilton

Thirty-six years ago Sandy Popko and her sister Carol Besler started Little Friends School on the property of 221 Edinburg Road, Hamilton. Sandy was a 25-year-old with a passion for education. The school started with Sandy as the owner, director and teacher. Today Little Friends School continues to thrive with Sandy operating the school along with her partner, Debbie Monahan, who took over for her sister 16 years ago. Little Friends School offers classes for children aged 18 months through kindergarten. They have a Toddler 1 class, for children 18 months to 30 months old, a 2 1/2 to 3-year-old class, as well as full and half-day classes for three and four year olds, plus a kindergarten class. Little Friends School is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Little Friends also offers a unique summer camp experience for ages 18 months to 10 years, divided into three groups: toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary age. Both full days and half days are available

and include a variety of activities including special events and trips based on weekly themes. Little Friends School is a licensed facility that meets all state guidelines. All classes, including before care, after care, summer camp and holiday care are taught by qualified teachers. Sandy says, “We foster a strong relationship with our families. The teachers are here for the children. They are kept safe, happy, and have fun while learning so the parents can rest assured their children are well taken care of while they are at work.” Teachers work different shifts to ensure at least on of them is with their students at all points throughout the day. They do not rely on part-time staff to fill in for before and after care. Sandy continues: “The teachers here are really good. We’ve had children come here because our teachers have been here many years. Many times we get the children of former students.” Their fully day four-year-old teacher, Bonnie Gunzelman, retired in June, 2015, after teaching 31 years. She continues to visit the school and works as a substitute teacher. Debbie said “she has had kids grow up and come back with their children. They tell their children, ‘I had Miss Bon-

nie.’ She looks at them and says, ‘Oh, you are back, all grown up!’” Other teachers have also been there for many years. Jan Fasiska, the kindergarten teacher, is continuing to teach after 31 years at Little Friends School. Miss Rosemarie Bonacchi has been there 18 years, as well as Jay Padmanabjan, who has been at Little Friends School 14 years. The curriculum at Little Friends School is “geared toward fostering skills needed for success in school. We strive to instill a love of learning in each child and celebrate their success along the way. Daily activities are designed to encourage and challenge each child’s natural curiosity and instill skills that prepare children for later school success. We respect each child’s individuality and strive to provide a curriculum that addresses the special interests of each child to achieve their full potential,” explains Sandy. The curriculum is theme-based. Each month the theme changes, although pre-reading, math, science, language, and gross motor skills are built into each theme and remain constant throughout the year.

Little Friends School is the “best kept secret in Hamilton.” There are two buildings on the property with the main building not quite visible from the road. The front building houses for four-year-old and kindergarten classrooms, while the back building is where the 18 month to three-year-olds hold their classes. Children enrolling in the kindergarten class must turn five before December 31. The cut-off for kindergarten in Hamilton is October 1. Enrollment is open all year, as long as there is availability. They enroll between 10 and 12 students in the kindergarten class. The kindergarten class meets the state require-

ments for public school kindergarten. In addition to teachers, parents also play an important role in their children’s education. “We work to foster strong relationships with the families enrolled in our program. We believe that teachers and parents should be partners in the education process,” continues Sandy. After all, parents know their child best. little friends sCHool

practiced daily at great camps like Liberty Lake. 2. Camp can be a technology detox. Kids are addicted to screens, and we adults are the pushers. The average child stares at screens for 7.5 hours per day. At Liberty Lake, the average is ZERO, and the kids literally THANK us for it. 3. Camp teaches kids how to make and keep friendships. My daughter has 3600 Instagram followers and 3600 Facebook friends, most barely acquaintances. Only a handful of REAL friends though, and she’s not unique. Camp is a place where kids can make lifelong friendships, like college friends, while being coached through the ins and outs of navigating social relationships. 4. Summers should be about playing OUTSIDE. Our “Nature Deficit Disorder” children are indoors 99 percent of their lives. At Liberty Lake, they are 99 percent OUTSIDE, and love it. When it’s sunny, we wear hats. When it’s hot, we swim. When we get “liquid sunshine,” we sing, dance, and get muddy. 5. Camp is away from parents. Think about your favorite moments as a child. Were your parents there? Probably not. That’s because the moments that give kids

Liberty Lake Day Camp Why Summer Camp? By Andy Pritikin Why summer camp? 12 million children attend summer camps every summer, but the fact is that most parents in our area didn’t attend themselves, and when that’s the case, it’s hard to understand what all the fuss is about. I often ask parents to remember their freshman year of college, when they went out on their own to a new place, meeting new people, trying new experiences, stepping out of their comfort zone. Think about how impactful that time was in your life, how close you still feel with some of the friends you madeThat is very much what a high quality camp experience like Liberty Lake can be like. Instead telling you heart-tugging personal stories about “the magic of camp,” here are five specific points that all parents should understand1. Camp is a safe environment for teaching children the skills of life. Colleges and employers agree that most of their new recruits lack the vital skills of communication, creativity, critical thinking and teamwork — “21st Century Skills” all

the most confidence and selfawareness take place when put out of their comfort zone, away from parents, proving that they can accomplish things on their own. Why summer camp? Because we all want our kids to grow up to become happy, successful, contributing members of society, and in today’s world, it’s more challenging than ever. Technology is wonderful, but cyber-bullying, googling answers to everything, and living through our smartphones is not. Camp is an easy antidote to modern society that all young people should have the opportunity to ex-

perience- just ask someone who has been to Liberty Lake or another great summer camp, and they will be happy to tell you why! Montessori School of Hamilton Finding the right school! It is registration time again, and during this very exciting time of year parents always think about finding the right school for their child. In selecting a school each family needs to consider how well it fits, not only between the child and the school, but also between the parents and the school. As tempting as it may be to enroll without a classroom observation, it is imperative that this visit be at the top of your to-do list. Therefore a school visit, and orientation about the educational program the school follows is a must. It will allow each parent to get an idea of how well the school matches with their sense of values and goals, for their child’s well being and education. The best way to determine which school is right for you and your child is close personal observation. Do not rely on hearsay from other parents. The school that one family may rave about may be totally wrong for your own. Rely on your own experience, trust your eyes, ears, and gut instincts. You should find yourself in harmony with the school’s ambiance and practice.

The school that you choose for your child’s first educational experience is well known to be one of the most important decisions you will make for your child. The first impressions your child will absorb will indirectly shape his/her future. Therefore, it is crucial that the school chosen incorporates all facets of a child’s life experiences and stages into their learning program. It is during these unique stages that the child builds the foundation for a lifetime love of learning.

The program that you choose should believe that each and every child is unique, and will follow his/ her own natural pathway of development. It is during these pathways were preschool can enrich the social, cognitive emotional, and physical aspects of the child’s growth. As your child embarks on these very important years of development, he/she will need to be challenged. Children are born to be curious, creative and motivated to observe and learn. It is this curiosity that

when properly channeled will open up a world of knowledge and opportunity for the child. The classroom environment should be thoughtfully prepared, conceptualized solely for the child. The activities should be developmentally appropriate and manageable for the child. The age appropriate activities lure the child’s innate desire to learn and ensure success. This drive with which the child holds within him, should be the basis for all principles and methods to the

educational program chosen. With this innate desire to explore and discover by themselves, the child becomes an independent learner. It is critically important to allow the child to develop a high degree of independence, self- reliance and autonomy. Therefore the program should have a freedom of movement and a freedom of choice for the child. Following their sensitive periods of development children are capable of making their own choices, which guide their own learning. The program should understand and believe that there is a direct link between children’s sense of selfworth, empowerment, self-mastery, and their ability to learn and retain new skills and information. The idea of ongoing professional development should be stenciled throughout the school. It can be seen on the continual development of vibrant programs geared towards enticing each child. These programs will reflect: an introduction of new technology and innovation to facilitate early learning; continuity of learning belief, which encompasses the parents and extends education well beyond the classroom and into the home and family. The right school should strive to present a school that will find each parent to be in harmony with its ambiance

and style. This can only be made possible through the inclusion of parents, teachers and staff working together in the active pursuit of empowering our children for a better tomorrow. The school should follow a proven educational approach, which has been shown to guide the child toward independence, a love of learning and future success. Once you have chosen the perfect educational approach and school, please keep in mind that children thrive in consistency and order. The children who are educated in one consistent educational approach, and who grow within one school community, tend to be more grounded and tend to get more long-term value from their school experience than children who have had to adjust to several different programs. In the end the school should make you feel happy and content. If you can imagine your child’s success and happiness in the school, than that school is likely to be an excellent match for you and your family.
