Cannabusiness in Princeton? Not so fast

fter unanimously approving the introduction of an ordinance temporarily banning all marijuana-related business in the municipality, Princeton Council is set to vote the ordinance into law at its August 9 meeting. A public hearing on the ordinance will take place at that meeting; the Planning Board was also scheduled to discuss the ordinance at its July 29 meeting. The ordinance buys Princeton additional time to consider the logistics and implications of allowing marijuanarelated business in town. After New Jersey voters approved the legalization of marijuana in the state last November, municipalities were given a deadline of August 21 to either ban or otherwise place limits on the types of marijuana businesses allowed to operate within their borders. The licenses that businesses can seek in connection with the recreational cannabis market are: Class 1— Cannabis cultivator (growing cannabis); Class 2 — Cannabis manufacturer (preparing and packaging); Class 3 — Cannabis wholesaler (sell-

ing to other wholesalers and retailers); Class 4 — Cannabis distributor (selling between cultivators/ establishments); Class 5 — Cannabis retailer (selling to retail customers); and Class 6 — Cannabis delivery from retailers to retail customers) If a municipality does not specifically prohibit each class of license by the August 21 deadline, they will automatically be allowed in the municipality for five years. The state law does allow towns that are currently banning the drug to allow cannabis sales at a later date. Also under the law, towns can’t stop the use of cannabis or cannabis products within the municipalities or the delivery of recreational marijuana from outside of town. Princeton, which started a cannabis task force led by Councilwoman Eve Niedergang earlier this year, plans to enact the temporary ban in order to allow the task force more time to determine how the town can move forward with allowing the sale of marijuana in a safe and fair way. The task force’s mission statement explains that it “serves in an advisory

capacity to provide input to Mayor and Council on the major areas of concern regarding legal cannabis. Issues to be considered include cannabis operations in the municipality, education and enforcement; the CTF’s discussions and recommendations will keep social and racial justice in the forefront.” The proposed ordinance states as its purpose “to ensure that Princeton retains full control over what types of cannabis uses to allow, where, and under what conditions, to give the Cannabis Task Force the time it needs to fully consider and finalize its ‘opt-in’ recommendations, and to preserve Princeton’s ability to engage in a full community process prior to making any final decisions.” Niederganag said the group was unable to fully research the issue and recommended the town ban cannabis for now to allow for further exploration. She said that the task force hopes to craft a limited opt-in ordinance in the near future that would allow some retail sales in town. Princeton joins most other Mercer County towns in banning marijuanarelated businesses. Only Ewing, Lawrence, Pennington, and Trenton plan to allow retail marijuana sales within their

borders. Last November voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment to legalize marijuana, with 2,737,682 (67.08 percent) voting in favor and 1,343,610 (32.92 percent) voting against. In Mercer County, the vote was 119,390 (71 percent) to 48,171 (29 percent) in favor of legalization. After the referendum, Gov. Phil Murphy signed a package of laws that established rules and regulations for the state’s legal cannabis business. The package includes three separate bills. One established a new legalization system and the other two overhauled the state’s massive drug control regulations. The governor also appointed the Cannabis Regulatory Commission, which has been meeting since April to establish specific guidelines regulating new dispensaries and grow facilities. The CRC must establish rules and regulations governing the personal-use cannabis industry by August 21. Once the initial rules are established, they will be effective for up to one year. At that point, the CRC must readopt, amend, or adopt more permanent regulations for the industry. See AROUND TOWN, Page 4

Princeton to host COVID vaccine clinics

he Princeton Health Department is offering two COVID-19 vaccine clinics in August, hoping to ensure that all eligible residents are able to receive the free vaccination. The first vaccine clinic takes place Thursday, August 5, at Princeton United Methodist Church at the corner of Nassau Street and Vandeventer Avenue from 5 to 8 p.m. A second clinic takes place Friday, August 27, from 5 to 9 p.m. on Hinds Plaza outside the Princeton Public Library. The municipality has also launched a mobile vaccination program in which Health Department staff visit a business, community organization, or place of worship at a scheduled time. For more information on the program contact health officer Jeff Grosser at jgrosser@princetonnj.gov. All residents age 12 and over are eligible to be vaccinated, for free and without regard to citizenship or health insurance status. As of July 19 the municipality reported that 76 percent of all eligible residents had been fully vaccinated. Among residents 18 and older, 75 percent had been vaccinated. Among residents age 65 and over — considered to be among the most vulnerable to severe cases of COVID-19 — 93 percent have been vaccinated.

hile the town of Princeton and the state Department of Transportation are in agreement that safety improvements are needed at the intersection of Witherspoon and Nassau Streets — including a new traffic light with a designated pedestrian phase — related changes to the intersection are meeting with more resistance. The sticking point? The kiosk, the less-than-attractive community bulletin board that has long stood at the corner. In a presentation at the July 26 Princeton Council meeting, DOT representatives explained why the removal of the kiosk may be required to accommodate a sizable black box that would contain the electronic infrastructure for the new traffic signal. The proposed box would be a slightly larger version of the one that has been installed at the intersection of Vandeventer Avenue and Nassau Street, but, as Councilman David Cohen pointed out, the Witherspoon Street intersection experiences much heavier pedestrian traffic. And while council members expressed no great affection for the existing kiosk, the consensus was that it is a better look for the street than a black metal box. While concealing the equipment within the kiosk was ruled out by DOT representatives, Council has ask they return at a later date with additional proposals for the intersection.

REAL ESTATE Zoning Board updates

he Zoning Board heard three applications at its July 28 meeting. The first was the continuation of an application heard in June to construct a new home on an undersized lot on Wheatsheaf Lane — a proposal that had met with vehement opposition from neighbors (see the Echo, July 2021). With some revisions from the applicant, including the addition of several new trees and shrubbery to the property, the application was approved unanimously. Two additional applications were heard at the meeting: 193 South Harrison Street, Nicola Knipe, owner and applicant. Variances were requested under the c (1) criteria to permit construction of a 13’ x 20’ parking space in exception to the required front and side yard setbacks. The application was approved, with compliments from board on the applicant’s thorough and well prepared presentation. 42 Chestnut Street, Jean Hendry, owner and applicant. A D4 floor area ratio (FAR) variance was requested to permit construction of a rear screened porch in exception the maximum floor area ratio. The application was approved with the condition that the addition remain a screened porch rather than a fully walled enclosure. The Zoning Board’s next regular meeting takes place Wednesday, August 25.

Planning Board update: Court Club deferred

he continuation of the Planning Board hearing on Princeton University’s controversial application to demolish three Victorian homes on Prospect Avenue and relocate the historic Court Club to accommodate new facilities for environmental science and the School of Engineering and Applied Science has been postponed. It had been scheduled to be continued at the Planning Board’s July 8 meeting but was instead delayed by two months to allow the board time to hear other matters and will now be heard on Thursday, September 23. At this Princeton-based nonprofit, every week is shark week By Dan Aubrey

t’s summer in New Jersey and that means thoughts of “going down the shore” to sun bathe on the beach, gaze at the water, and, occasionally wonder about what lies beneath the surface. And with television’s “Shark Week” just over, those thoughts often turn to sharks. Meanwhile, at the Princeton Echo, our thoughts have also turned to sharks, or more specifically to the Shark Research Institute headquartered at 70 Heather Lane in Princeton. Founded in 1981, the SRI’s mission is to use science education “to bring a fact-based position to the table in our work to advocate for shark conservation and protection. From this foundation we work relentlessly to make an impact in four important ways: research and science, including field work and documentation, whale and shark migration and DNA studies, legislation, including engaging with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species to support protective, enforceable shark legislation, including banning the shark fin trade; education includes school outreach programs, shark ecotourism, a newsletter, and online global shark attack file; and conservation efforts that include whale shark adoption, open expeditions, and an awards program. In an effort to learn more about sharks, their role in ecology, their situation, and their potential danger to New Jersey swimmers, we contacted Shark Research Institute founder Marie Levine, who shared the following insights into the world of sharks and the SRI: Princeton Echo: What would the ocean be like with a diminished shark population?

Marie Levine: Dead, non-functioning. With diminishing populations of sharks, there would be more trophic cascades [ecological imbalances], such as we experienced here off the coast of New Jersey. Most of our shark population disappeared as result of overfishing. With no sharks to control the population of their normal prey (cownose rays), we had a massive population explosion of rays. Cownose rays feed on scallops and other bivalves, which filter the water. The huge numbers of rays totally decimated the scallops, resulting in the collapse of the scallop industry

and a significant loss in water quality. Most sharks have not evolved much since before dinosaurs roamed the earth. Sharks are some of the highest developed large animals on our planet. Unlike other kinds of fish, sharks grow very slowly and don’t have young until they reach maturity, which can be up to 25 years for some kinds of sharks. Each year people slaughter more than 100,000,000 sharks. People are killing sharks much faster than sharks can reproduce. Global warming has become a popular subject these days, but if we lose our sharks, we lose our oceans, our species may not survive. They keep populations of fish and other marine species healthy and in check by culling the weak and diseased animals. They maintain the ecological balance of the marine ecosystem. PE: What are humans doing to threaten the shark population and why? That includes products. ML: Slaughtering sharks for their fins to use in shark fin soup is a major problem. Although some shark species are in trouble due to habitat loss and many sharks are caught as bycatch, it is the shark fin trade that is the biggest danger. The fins are used in shark fin soup. Shark fin soup was served to the Chinese emperor and nobles as far back as the Sung dynasty, but with the rise of China’s middle class it became a symbol of wealth and was served at weddings or to impress business associates. A bowl of shark fin soup can cost $150, sometimes more. The cartilage noodles from the fins are tasteless (the flavor comes from chicken or pork). See SHARKS, Page 8

Fins of sharks are marketable, but their meat isn’t. Sharks are not good to eat due to the high levels of methyl mercury and other toxins in their flesh, plus their meat spoils quickly due to its high content of urea. Increasing demand for shark fins (is) mostly in Asian countries. PE: Why do you think sharks are perceived so negatively or menacingly in popular entertainment — especially as human-eating predators? ML: Some people like horror movies; they enjoy being scared. For many, the ocean is an alien world and some popular entertainment plays to such audiences. PE: What is the reality related to sharks eating human beings? Every species (every animal) has a menu imprinted in its brain. ML: Sharks have been around 450 million years, but humans have only been around for about 200,000 years. Too late to make it on the shark menu. And menu items are rather specific. Humans eat plants, but we don’t chow down a tree for dinner. PE: What is the shark population along the New Jersey coast and what can people do to protect themselves from negative shark incidents? ML: Use common sense and leave the water if bait fish are present, don’t swim at time sharks are feeding, don’t swim or surf at river mouths. PE: What should a swimming or wading person do if a shark makes an appearance? ML: Leave the water slowly and quietly if large sharks are seen or you are requested to do so by a lifeguard. PE: How many shark incidents are reported annually in New Jersey? ML: Unprovoked incidents are very rare. The last incident in New Jersey was in July 27, 2008. ML: Princeton had an unusually large number of divers living in area, many of whom were “shark” people: Stan Waterman, a legendary underwater filmmaker and camera man who shot the footage for ‘Blue Water, White Death”; Peter Benchley, author of “Jaws”; Dean Fessler and myself (both of us worked for several years with white sharks in South Africa); and the late Dr. Maurice Coutts of Princeton University, who also studied bull sharks around the world. There were also a number of members of the Explorers Club in the area (the executive committee members are field scientists from a variety of disciplines) and our DNA studies were initiated by post docs at Princeton University. To this day most of our board of trustees are fellows of the Explorers Club. To create value for sharks, we presented them as living natural resources for ecotourism, capable of contributing significantly more income to a local economy when alive, particularly in developing countries. By so doing continuing revenues were generated for and by local fishermen who might otherwise slaughter the sharks for immediate gain. SRI produces peer-reviewed scientific publications which legislators require a sound scientific basis to make or change laws. When Shark Research Institute was formed 30 years ago, there were no other organizations in the USA that were conducting research on sharks and using the results to secure protective legislation for them.

PE: What are the benefits of being in Princeton? ML: The libraries (Firestone) and multiple superb libraries in New York (Natural History Museum, Medical libraries), and Princeton is less than an hour from the ocean. PE: How was the initial funding raised, who supported it, and, given that sharks are perceived as menacing, how difficult was it to get funders? ML: Foundations prefer to support “safe” projects, and bleeding edge research with sharks — with few exceptions from courageous and visionary foundations — was viewed with alarm. Most of our funding came (and still does) from corporations, schools, and private citizens. PE: What were the initial challenges that organization faced and how were they addressed?

‘I was well aware that the negative hype and outright lies about sharks was threatening their survival and such nonsense needed to be eliminated before it was too late.’ ML: No scientific equipment that we needed was being manufactured, so we modified some existing equipment for our use, but for the most part designed and manufactured the equipment ourselves with help from engineers in South Africa and at Rutgers University. PE: How and why did you become so involved with sharks? ML: As a diver, I always loved sharks; to me they were like living sculpture and moved with incredible grace. I was well aware that the negative hype and outright lies about sharks was threatening their survival and such nonsense needed to be eliminated before it was too late. PE: What was the catalyst to create an organization to study and protect sharks? ML: Shark populations were plummeting worldwide.

PE: What are some of SRI’s quantifiable successes since it started (perhaps comparing data compiled over the year)? ML: Tracing migration patterns of species in order that we were able to concentrate conservation efforts in areas where the sharks were at most risk. Securing international protection for whale sharks, basking sharks, white sharks, sawfishes, porbeagle sharks, oceanic whitetip sharks, scalloped hammerhead sharks, great hammerhead sharks, smooth hammerhead shark, manta rays, devil rays, all three species of thresher sharks, both species of mako sharks, giant guitarfishes, and wedgefishes. And assisting with bans of the Shark Fishing Trade in 14 U.S. states and three territories PE: What were some of the surprises, revelations, and discoveries that you and the organization encountered over the years? ML: That many people and nations have come to see sharks are critically important living natural resources to be protected. PE: What are the continuing challenges and, again, how are they being addressed? ML: Human greed. People and corporations that value money more than a healthy planet. We are still working on fixing this. At the same time, we are also heavily involved in educating younger generations, passing the torch and our knowledge and expertise to them. PE: What do you hope to achieve in the near future and why is it important? ML: Passage of the Shark Fin Trade Elimination Act. It closes the loopholes in previous laws intended to protect sharks. As part of its regional education program, the Shark Research Institute is presenting Fossil Shark Tooth Hunts in New Jersey on Saturdays, August 21, September 18, and October 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. in which “all participants find plenty of shellfish fossils, some shark teeth, and a few find fossil teeth of Moasaurs.” Cost is $10 per individual or $20 for a family. Pretty in purple Lavender farms delight the senses By Dan Aubrey

The peak season of lavender at area lavender farms proves that farm fresh means more than vegetables and fruits. Lavender is a southern European transplant to the United States. Although it appears in several varieties, their purple-hued flowers provide a treat for the eye, nose, and, through oils and mixture, the skin and taste buds. Getting immersed into the world of lavender is easy and easily done by a short day trip or a quick drop in at one of the regional farms. And with the season fading over the next few weeks, it’s time to get moving. Peace Valley Farm in Bucks County provides a pleasant summer day trip. Located just outside Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and across from Peace Valley Park and Galena Lake, the 50-mile journey from the Princeton/Trenton region can either be a pleasant ramble through winding back roads or faster paced highway jaunt that can include stops at New Hope, Peddler’s Village and downtown Doylestown. An item on the Visit Bucks County website, Peace Valley Farm was established around 20 years ago but underwent a renovation in 2019 in order to control water and support the cultivation of a plant that still yearns for home.

Several acres at most, the small farm provides quick access to the 3,000-flower field where visitors wander freely and take photos—like the French-speaking photographer arranging young girls in 19thcentury dresses to stand amidst the flower rows or, presumably, a young father taking a photo of his wife holding their child. Tree shaded areas with benches around the square-like field provide the opportunity for visitors to rest. Seats are also provided around the barn-like structure that features a lavender drying station where cuttings hang on racks and an antique machine for processing flowers for oils. The building also houses a shop that sells lotions, oils, scent satchels and lavender-flavored drinks. And since the farm depends on the shop’s income for support, admission, tours and parking are free. Summer hours are Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Shopping online is also available. Peace Valley Farm, 801 New Galena Rd., Doylestown. Schools would invite us in to talk about mental health and signs of suicide. We have dogs at all of our programs, from kindgarten all the way through college age. Some of the programs are tough. It’s tough to talk about significant mental health issues. It’s tough to talk about signs of suicide. Six09: What is it about dogs that helps make those conversations easier? Baker: It’s just this magic that happens, this human-canine bond that exists. Dogs just make us feel good. I’ve been in schools where the students have said, “I need to go down to the nurse’s office to get my allergy medicine so I can pet the dog.” We sometimes go to schools for finals week. I was at a school where we had six dogs there. One girl came around to me and I asked her what test she had today. She said “I don’t have any finals today. I’m just here to pet the dogs.” It’s just amazing. When a school has a wellness fair and we’re invited in, they tell us that we’re the most popular workshop. There are so many kids who want to come to the therapy dog sessions. We’ve just rolled out a new program for elementary students, and it’s all about dogs. It’s called Miki and Friends Go to School: Exploring Our Emotions through the Eyes of Dogs. I wear two hats: mental health advocate and dog trainer. I find very often the hats overlap. What I discovered was that the more I studied dog behavior, I saw the similarities between human behavior. That’s what this book is all about. It’s about dogs and how they respond to certain things, how they have emotional responses, different choices that they make—the same thing that human children can do. It doesn’t put the spotlight on the child. We’re not talking about you, we’re talking about the dog. Afterwards, they get to meet the dogs. It’s been very, very well received. It’s a fairly new program because of COVID. Every place that we’ve been, it’s been very, very well received. One teacher told us it was the highlight of their year. I was very, very honored. Six09: Can you tell me a little bit about why it’s so important to reach out and erase the mental health stigma? Baker: That is so important. That’s our message. The statistics are really staggering. One in five of all of our young people struggle with some sort of mental health disorder, and less than 33% of those actually reach out and receive treatment. What I can’t stress enough is that 70 to 90% of all mental health disorders are treatable. It’s like any other significant illness, though. The younger they are that we can educate them, the more likely that we won’t have people with substance abuse disorders and overdoses and suicides. My son, we saw signs in him when he was six. We didn’t ignore it. We talked to his pediatrician. He saw a therapist. It wasn’t ignored. I don’t want anyone to think that my story has to be their story. Kenny had a very significant illness. He was in that 10% of very difficult to treat illnesses. We also lost his grandmother to suicide, and that’s another

If we have suicide or depression or alcoholism in our family, we need to be very aware and watch the things that might show in our children so that we can identify these illnesses and help them get support at an early age. The earlier we treat, the more likely the success of that treatment. That’s the story. Kenny’s story is a sad one, but it’s a story that I believe helps to inspire those who are struggling to get help. Kenny said goodbye to all his friends the day before he died. He talked to them on the phone. He left voicemail messages, email messages. He said goodbye to everybody. But it wasn’t until after he died that at least a dozen young people said, “You know Mrs. Baker, I had a really bad feeling. I didn’t want to say anything because I didn’t want to get Kenny in trouble. I didn’t want to get him mad at me.” So it’s important for all of us as a community to understand what the signs and symptoms are, let our friends know that we care, we’re concerned, and if they’re struggling, we’re here to help them find help. I don’t ever want a young person to feel like they have to take this on by themselves. We want to talk a lot about those safe, trusted adults who are there and who will listen to help keep them connected to the right resources. These brain illnesses are evil, ugly illnesses that lie to us. They lie and they tell us that we don’t deserve help. That’s why very often these young people who are struggling who die by suicide, they never, ever reach out and ask for help because their brains are telling them they don’t deserve help. Their brains are telling them that their family, their friends, the world would be better off without them. That’s why, as a community, we have this responsibility to be there for each other, to listen with compassion and empathy and kindness, and to help our friends get help. screenings. Moreover, COVID-19 fears led 43 percent of patients to miss their routine preventative care appointments. As a result, diagnoses for six major cancers dropped by nearly 50 percent during the pandemic. Fewer cancer detections does not mean fewer cancers. Rather, delayed diagnosis leads to the identification of disease at later stages. With more advanced diseases, the prognosis usually is not as good, and the care needed is more expensive and disruptive to patients’ lives. Radiologists, who identify and diagnose diseases, are helping to sound the alarm to remind patients about how important it is to reschedule wellvisits, screenings, and follow-up appointments. Center for Neuro-Oncology Leads New Brain Tumor Guidelines Paper and Advances Participation in Immunotherapy Trials for Glioblastoma Patients Capital Health’s Center for Neuro-Oncology, part of Capital Institute for Neurosciences and the Capital Health Cancer Center, continues to demonstrate nationally the program’s leadership and commitment to clinical excellence. Recently, the center’s neurosurgical director, DR. NAVID REDJAL, led publication of guidelines for the treatment of brain tumors, in addition to announcing the participation of Capital Health in two new immunotherapy trials for glioblastoma patients. “Our commitment to our patients is to provide exceptional care with treatment plans specifically developed to meet each individual patient’s needs,” said Dr. Navid Redjal, director, Neurosurgical Oncology. “To offer this, we have to stay at the forefront of new options, and provide leadership in the broader medical community on what we offer patients with brain tumors. This allows us to consider what will best meet the needs of our patients, and be involved in taking care to the next level.” Dr. Redjal, who runs the program’s multi-disciplinary Brain Tumor Clinic, as well as the program’s weekly brain tumor board where patients’ care plans are all reviewed by a multi-disciplinary team of experts, was lead author on a recently published paper discussing updated evidence-based guidelines for treating brain tumors in the Journal of Neuro-Oncology. The paper, which includes co-authors from Massachusetts General Hospital, Case Western, Mount Sinai, and Emory, was part of his work with the Joint Section on Tumors of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS). Capital Health also recently added two new immunotherapy trials, being run by the National Cancer Institute as part of its clinical trial research program. Both trials involve immunotherapy drugs ipilimumab and nivulomab in treating glioblastoma. Immunotherapy is a treatment that uses the immune system to help fight diseases, such as cancer. New approaches using immunotherapy are being tested to see how it works as part of different treatment plans. Glioblastoma is a particularly aggressive cancer that is very difficult to treat.

“Immunotherapy has shown itself to be effective in treating many cancers. Glioblastoma, however has not responded to traditional immunotherapy approaches because it is what is referred to as a “cold” tumor. Unlike “hot” tumors, cold tumors are not recognized by, and do not provoke a response by, the immune system,” said Dr. Neel Gandhi, medical director, Hematologic and Oncologic Diseases, and a principal co-investigator of one of the immunotherapy trials. “In a cancer like glioblastoma, new research is focusing on turning this "cold" tumor "hot,” to then stimulate the immune system to respond and attack the tumor. This can be tested by combining immunotherapy with surgery and radiation therapy. The hope is that future immunotherapy protocols will be successful in treating glioblastoma using this approach." The Center for Neuro-Oncology participates in and develops numerous research studies and clinical trials. The goal is to help provide greater understanding, develop new methods to detect and diagnose those diseases, and focus on innovative treatments that are not broadly available to patients. Clinical trials offer patients some of the very latest in care while giving physicians and researchers the opportunity to study the safety and effectiveness of new treatments. Participation is voluntary. Our experienced neuro-oncology team carefully reviews study criteria, potential benefits, risks, and other considerations with eligible patients for enrollment into a clinical study. Once enrolled, our clinical research staff carefully monitors patients throughout the research trial and is available to answer questions. Over the last decade, Capital Health and its Institute for Neurosciences have been trusted providers of advanced neuroscience care for patients in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania. Some of the most complicated patients we treat are those who are diagnosed with brain tumors. After a rigorous audit, Capital Health earned this designation by demonstrating a focus on the multidisciplinary treatment of pancreatic cancer—treating the whole patient—with a goal of achieving the best possible outcomes and an improved quality of life.

fter shutting down at the beginning of the pandemic and remaining closed well into 2021, Triumph Brewery reopened its 138 Nassau Street brewpub in early July. The restaurant is operating on a reduced schedule for the summer, open only for late afternoon drinks and dinner from 4 to 10 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. The menu has also been streamlined, with choices of four “small plates” and ten “large plates,” including two salads, four burger and sandwich options, and four entrees. But the more exciting news for fans of the 26-yearold establishment is the announcement that construction has finally begun on its new space at the former Post Office in Palmer Square. Triumph first announced its intention to move into the Post Office space in 2016, and after navigating complications related to easements and preservation of historic elements of the structure, plans for the 300-seat restaurant were approved in 2017. But permitting delays and a global pandemic postponed the start of construction to earlier this year. In a recent post on its social media accounts, Triumph announced “Construction has started … … on the old Princeton post office in Palmer Square. While construction will last well into 2022, we will continue to operate our present location (138 Nassau Street) just as we have for the last 26 years. We do not have an exact transfer/opening date for the post office, but please know we’re ahead of schedule.” Triumph is documenting its progress on a new Instagram account, @triumph_postoffice.

“Call Me Athena: Girl from Detroit,” the novel debut from the ACP creative writing instructor. Labyrinth Books will be on hand with copies of the book for sale at the event on Thursday, August 12, at 6 p.m. in the Arts Council’s Taplin Gallery. “Call Me Athena” is loosely based on Smith’s paternal grandmother. The story, told in verse, follows Mary as the American-born daughter of Greek and French immigrants living in Detroit in the 1930s, creating a historically accurate portrayal of life as an immigrant during the Great Depression, hunger strikes, and violent riots. Colby Cedar Smith grew up in the Midwest and holds degrees from Colorado College and Harvard University. She is the recipient of a 2020 New Jersey Council on the Arts Fellowship in Poetry; and a 2021 New Jersey Arts in Education Residency Grant for her work with the Nature Harmony Project. ummertime… Just say that one rather common word a bit more languidly than usual, drawn out with the slightest hint of melody, followed by a small pause, and people smile and light up. It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t start humming along to the iconic song composed by George Gershwin for Porgy and Bess. It’s been called the best song ever written for the musical theater. Stephen Sondheim observed that Gershwin’s lyricist DuBose Heyward must have struggled with what to write after that first word. He could have written “when,” but “that would have opened a completely different poetic realm,” Sondheim said. “The choices of “ands” [and] “buts” become almost traumatic as you are writing a lyric — or should, anyway — because each one weighs so much.” Writing is hard. Every word you put down leads to different places. You want the reader, or listener, to bear with you. Your goal is to take them to the very place you have in mind. Which, in my opinion, for good writing, is never the obvious.

I guess many people, thinking about their hometown in summer, would put have written a “but” instead of the “and” that DuBose Heyward wrote. They would be surprised to find the living easy in the middle of July. But they would never know, because, just in case, they leave town. In Princeton, The Great Summertime Escape starts around May, when people begin talking about their getaway spots. “We will be in our summer house in Maine … visit the grandchildren in Provincetown ... hang out in the Hamptons,” they tell us. They look forward to avoiding the mugginess, the soaring heat with its melting sidewalks. In June the great exodus starts. “Bye, bye, till Labor Day,” they say as we wave them goodbye in their packed cars. Their last-minutes flip-flops perched next to the straw hats on the dashboard. Off they go. What they do not know is that the very city they abandoned will transform itself while they are away. Well, I would say, because they are away. Princeton in August becomes the best vacation address one can imagine. I always liked to stick around in summer, wherever I lived. In Amsterdam, I

enjoyed the empty midsummer streets, where you can hear birds chirping, and leaves rustling, instead of cars honking. Two of my babies were born near the end of July. I have sweet memories of strolling through a quiet park, feeling a child floating inside me. Getting an ice cream cone without having to wait in line, licking it up on an empty bench. Slowly enjoying your lunch without people eyeing your seat. And although I value my friendships, being away from each other for a bit is wholesome, a vacation in itself. Afterwards, you have stories to tell each other. New insights. Fresh ideas. By mid-July, Princeton is empty. Early mornings, I walk to Lake Carnegie without seeing another human

being. I sit on my favorite stone and watch a solitary rowboat glide merrily down the stream. Surrounded by deer, I dream up plans for October. I walk into town, passing a dogtraining class with playful pups pulling their cheerful owners. I sip an extra milky macchiato outside the small café. A feeling of exclusive luxury that has never once in my life been topped. Not in Saint Tropez, not in Aspen, not on a yacht sailing the Caribbean. The city is mine. Summertime ...
