As a Robbinsville resident, the nearest Parochial high school for Jackson Wargo to attend is Notre Dame. Wargo could live on the moon, however, and he would still be playing baseball for the Lawrenceville institution. His blood type could easily be ND-positive.

FBI agents descended on the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha Hindu temple in Robbinsville last month, on the heels of a lawsuit that claims 200 Indian nationals were trafficked to the United States under false pretenses and forced to live and work on temple grounds for $1.20 an hour. The class action lawsuit names six plaintiffs—Mukesh Kumar, Keshav Kumar, Devi Laal, Niranjan, Pappu and Brajendra—and alleges wage theft and “shocking abuses” by BAPS. The workers often exceeded 80 hours a week with few days off for what amounted to $450 a month. The lawsuit seeks the workers’ unpaid wages, an award of money for other damages, and a court order against BAPS. According to the complaint, 200 Indian nationals were recruited and brought to the United States under R-1 religious visas to do stonework and other construction on the temple. Under federal immigration law, R-1 visas are available to those who minister or work in religious occupations—BAPS told the United States government that the workers were coming to New Jersey as reliSee BAPS, Page 10

Wargo’s dad, Chris, won state championships in football and baseball with the Irish. His grandfather, Jerry, a former minor league ballplayer, was coach Joe Drulis’ assistant coach from 2001-08. His uncle Jerry won a baseball title at ND while his uncle Mike claimed a football championship. His aunt Dianne was the Irish’s long-time cheerleader coach. Grandmother Lorraine MiMom has long supported the school’s sports programs and various other activities, while mom, Michelle, has been general manager in getting things organized with summer sports. Closer to his own age group, Wargo’s older sister Hope was an All-County track & field performer and is now on scholarship at Rider. See WARGO, Page 8

SAY GOODBYE TO BACK & LEG PAIN...

WITHOUT SURGERY!

30 Million Americans suffer from back pain everyday. This affects everything that they do, from work to play and ultimately their quality of life. 7 out of 10 people experience lower back pain at some point in their lives and it is one of the most common reason for patient visits to primary care physicians. There is no doubt that low back pain exists in epidemic proportions today. There are many causes of back pain. Some people develop it over time, others are injured in sports, work or accidents. Most people complain of pain and numbness in their legs, usually the result of spinal conditions such as sciatica, stenosis and herniated discs. Regardless of the cause, people cope with pain in several different ways. Many people try to wait back pain out only to find that it keeps getting worse. They buy new mattresses, try different stretching exercises, learn new techniques for sitting and standing, yet their conditions do not improve. Some make repeated unsuccessful trips back and forth between their doctor, chiropractors, and/or physical therapists. Others opt for surgery, and while it is true that surgery may be the answer for certain types of back injured, it is highly invasive and not without serious risks.

Vincent J. Calcagno, who has served the former Washington Township and later the Township of Robbinsville since 1994, informed administration and members of the Senior Advisory Council Tuesday that he will not seek re-election on ownship council, with his current term set to expire on Dec. 31. Calcagno is a well-traveled and accomplished telecommunications professional, longtime resident of Robbinsville and the longest-tenured member of council. “I never imagined when I moved to Robbinsville in 1988 that I would be involved in local government in any way,” Calcagno said. “Then Ed Nelson stepped down from the Township committee in the old form of government. They asked me to run, and from there I was hooked on public service and community involvement. That involvement has benefitted me in every single facet of my life. I still very much enjoy it, but there are so many smart, talented young residents in town and they should have a voice for the next generations.” Calcagno first was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Nelson in 1994 as part of the former Township Committee form of government, before serving two terms as Mayor in 1999 and 2004. He also was Deputy Mayor in 1998 and 2000. The January 7, 2021 reorganization meeting marked Mr. Calcagno’s seventh stint as Vice President. He continues to serve as Council liaison to the Senior Citizen Advisory Council and has been a staunch advocate for our senior community. “When I first came onboard our Senior Center was empty and there were virtually no programs,” Mr. Calcagno said. “That really struck me and left a profound mark. Now, our Senior Center is thriving with incredible programs and it’s been a total team effort. That took the incredible work of many, many people, not just myself. We are all eager to have them return very soon in the aftermath of COVID-19.” On June 25, 2020, Mr. Calcagno was one of 33 members elected to the New Jersey State League of Municipalities Elected Officials Hall of Fame. “I will miss being there to help solve problems,” he said. “I will miss being at the supermarket and listening to the questions and suggestions from our residents. I really will. My first question back to them was almost always: “What can we do to help?” I’ll miss that interaction. I’ll miss the people I’ve worked side by side with, from my fellow Councilmen and Councilwomen to Mayor (Dave) Fried, (Administrator) Joy Tozzi, (Senior Center Director) Renee (Burns) and all of our police, fire and DPW guys. The thing I enjoy most is that none of us who work for the town are ever satisfied. We don’t

do the mundane. None of us are afraid to tackle big issues and big problems. The energy of the people who serve in those buildings has been an amazing thing to be part of. We want our residents to just focus on their family and their lives, and not worry about their local government. That’s been our goal and I feel very comfortable leaving Robbinsville in a place where residents can do just that.”

As of May 23, Wargo led the Irish in hits (19), batting average (.539), walks (13) and on-base percentage (.750) batting second in the lineup, as he and leadoff man Dylan Palmer form a dangerous 1-2 combination. “He’s having a monster year for us,” Drulis said. “He’s dialed in and seeing the ball real well.” “I’m definitely very happy with how I’m doing,” said Wargo, who was on varsity as a freshman but did not play. “When I’m in the box I always think ‘Just catch a barrel, let the ball work and let the bat work.’” When Wargo is on the diamond, he is at home. A baseball junkie? “Yeah, my whole life,” he said. “Always a baseball kid, from day one.” Wargo played Robbinsville Little League for a few years but moved to the Hamilton A’s travel program at age 8. He is currently on the Five Star National team, which will play in three national championship tournaments this summer. “I’m really looking forward to all the

scouts who will be there and all that,” said Wargo, who hopes to play college baseball. “That’s the best of the best in competition. Varsity baseball is great but you’re talking the best kids from around the country. I’ve got kids on my team from Utah, Connecticut, we’re up and down the northeast and it’s more competitive down south. You go down to Georgia and Florida for the national championship, and you play kids from Puerto Rico, the Dominican, all over the country.” While showcase baseball has helped Wargo’s career, much of his knowledge comes from Chris, who taught his son to become a switch-hitter at an early age. “You don’t see that a lot in high school,” Drulis said. “He works hard at both sides of the plate. I can’t remember having too many switch hitters. It’s great to have. His father did a lot of work with him through the years to make him a switch-hitter. It’s paid off for him and it’s paid off for us.” Another lesson Chris instilled is to have an intelligent approach at the plate. “Since I’ve been a little kid my dad has preached to me ‘Be a smart hitter and be disciplined,’” Wargo said. “He’s always been a guy who said ‘Don’t be a first-pitch guy if you don’t need to.’ If you love that first pitch then absolutely go for it but I’ve been a guy who takes some pitches. I really just wait for my pitch. I feel like I’m very comfortable with two strikes.”

‘I always knew I’d be a Notre Dame boy. I’ve been around it my whole life.’ –ND baseball player Jackson Wargo

Having that confidence is huge for a batter. It gives them the ability to foul off pitches, run up pitch counts and show his teammates what the pitcher is throwing. Wargo has little problem falling behind 0-2, knowing he can grind out an at-bat until getting a delivery he likes. “One thing Palmer and I absolutely pride ourselves on is not striking out,”

Wargo said. “We tell ourselves we’re gonna work the pitchers no matter what. No matter how we go down, we’re not going down easy. That’s the biggest thing for me.” That’s not the easiest approach to take, as it provides a slim margin for errors, but Wargo has the ability thanks to another tip from Chris. “One other thing my father preached to me is shorten up with two strikes and aggressively protect,” Jackson said. “That means the zone can be big but you gotta find a way to catch a barrel and don’t strike out. “It feels good being able to do that, but you really gotta have confidence in yourself and trust yourself to be able to shorten up and still get a good piece. That takes a lot of work in the cage and a lot of work off the tee just to be able to shorten up and still find a consistent barrel to drive the baseball.” Wargo stands just 5-foot-9 but through a non-stop regiment of lifting, learning how to shift his weight in the box and taking endless cuts, he has developed decent gap power. He also works on his fielding as much as his hitting, and Drulis raves about his base running instincts and intelligence. “He just has a really high baseball IQ,” the coach said. “He’s always been a good player, but this year took that leap to be a great player.” Not surprisingly, he’s been great with the name Notre Dame across his chest.

The suit says that BAPS intentionally recruited workers from the Scheduled Caste, also known as Dalit, and other marginalized communities in India in order to maintain control over them. In India, people belonging this caste have been referred to as “untouchables” who “endure near complete social ostracization.” BAPS used this to its advantage, the complaint says, by referring to the workers as “worms” and continuously reminding them of their perceived place in the social hierarchy. “These individuals have suffered greatly—financially as a result of the wage theft, physically as a result of the grueling work they were forced to undertake, and mentally as a result of being forced for stay within the temple compound for months, and for many, years,” said Swati Sawant, an attorney for the workers. “They are brave for standing up for their rights.” The suit states that workers’ passports were confiscated upon arrival to the United States. They were forced to live and work in a fenced compound watched by BAPS uniformed security guards and were not allowed to leave the grounds unaccompanied. The plaintiffs also allege that they were constantly monitored by cameras and threatened with fines, physical restraint, harm and arrest. Workers were banned from speaking with

visitors to the temple and were faced with pay reduction if they didn’t obey. One man, Moham Lal, died on the grounds of the temple last year. Other workers organized to demand that Lal’s remains were handled according to his religious rituals and that BAPS improve working conditions. “This is a horrific case of worker exploitation and it is even more disturbing that it has gone on for years in New Jersey behind the temple’s walls,” said Daniel Werner of Radford and Keebaugh, one of the attorneys who filed the suit. “These workers were coerced through lies to come to the United States to work and then suffered tremendously—they were basically forced into servitude.” Robbinsville Township also released a statement. “The township’s jurisdiction over the property is limited to land use and Uniform Construction Code matters. At no time in approving BAPS’s land use applications, or in conducting UCC inspections on the property, did Robbinsville Township officials witness, or become aware of any labor issues that may have been present. The township was aware of temporary housing on the site and conducted inspections of that housing in April and June of 2020, until in-person inspections were suspended due to COVID-19. As to not interfere with this ongoing federal investigation, the township will have no further comment.” Contact SAM SCIARROTTA: ssciarrotta@ communitynews.org, (609) 396-1511, ext. 121

LETTER OF INTENT SIGNED BY

Capital Health and St. Francis Medical Center and positively impact the health and well-being of local and regional residents.”

Capital Health and St. Francis Medical Center, a member of Trinity Health, have signed a non-binding Letter of Intent (LOI). Under this LOI, St. Francis Medical Center will become a part of Capital Health. The non-binding LOI is the first step in evaluating and designing a framework that will enhance health care services and create a new model of care for residents of Trenton and the surrounding area. The goal is to work toward a definitive agreement that will create a more comprehensive and sustainable health care system for our community. “From its founding as the city’s first hospital in 1874 to its important role as an acute care teaching hospital and Mercer County’s only provider of comprehensive cardiac surgery, St. Francis Medical Center has always put the needs of Trenton and surrounding neighborhoods first,” said Al Maghazehe, President and CEO of Capital Health. “This approach aligns very well with Capital Health’s mission, and we are committed to our shared vision of providing the highest level of care for the community.” “The health care industry is always evolving to advance medicine and improve delivery of care to the communities we serve,” said Samuel J. Plumeri, Jr., chairman of Capital Healthcare, Inc. Board of Trustees. “The changes we’re seeing here in Mercer County are a reflection of what’s going on nationally, but our neighbors in Trenton and nearby communities can rest assured that we will continue to keep their interests at the center of all we do.” Both hospitals are known for providing advanced care and for ensuring local access to high-quality, comprehensive and affordable health care services. “Both Capital Health and St. Francis Medical Center are deeply committed to caring for residents of our community,” said Daniel P. Moen, President and Chief Executive Officer, St. Francis Medical Center. “The rapidly changing healthcare landscape presents challenges, but it is through a shared mission that both organizations look to expand services

“As a safety net hospital, ensuring the community has access to care is the heart of our mission,” said Joseph Youngblood, II, J.D., Ph.D., Chairman, Board of Trustees, St. Francis Medical Center. “In response to a broad national transformation of health care, we look to combine our strengths with those of Capital, a healthcare leader, and grow services for our residents. Together, we are steadfast in our commitment to provide area residents, including the underserved with highquality, comprehensive care and to improve the delivery of healthcare for our community. Our partnership with Capital Health will be a fitting legacy to the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for their decades of service to Trenton and Mercer County.” Capital Health and St. Francis now enter a period of due diligence. The process includes evaluation and discussion to determine how to best combine and enhance their capabilities to more effectively fulfill their missions to the citizens of Trenton and the surrounding area. Approvals will be necessary from State and Federal officials and others before the transaction is able to be completed. Throughout the process, Capital Health and St. Francis remain committed to sustaining and advancing the comprehensive, high quality services they provide to residents of the greater Trenton area. Areas of focus will include exploring opportunities to expand access to care and improved efficiency in health care delivery. The new combined system will be secular (Non-Catholic). Capital Health is the Central New Jersey/Lower Bucks County region’s leader in providing progressive, quality patient care with significant investments in physicians, nurses and staff, as well as advanced technology. Comprised of two hospitals (Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton and Capital Health Medical Center – Hopewell), a Hamilton outpatient facility, and various primary and specialty care practices across the region, Capital Health is a dynamic health care resource accredited by DNV GL - Healthcare. patients will now have access to additional treatment options for liver abnormalities through Capital Health.” Capital Health offers bloodless liver surgery and liver autotransplant surgery performed by CATALDO DORIA, MD, PHD, MBA, FACS, an internationally renowned hepatopancreato-biliary surgeon who helped develop these innovative techniques. As part of the new collaboration, Temple patients with pancreatic cancer who are appropriate candidates will also have access to complex open and robotic-assisted Whipple procedures performed by Dr. Doria. what’s happening What makes your garden grow? Summer garden tours in full bloom By Sam Sciarrotta

They don’t call us the Garden State for nothing. Groups all across the region are planning outdoor garden tours to mark the transition from spring to summer. Here’s your guide to flowers, flora and greenery, throughout Burlington and Mercer counties.

Roebling

The Roebling Museum’s annual Garden Tour is back. The town, famous for building some of the country’s most iconic bridges, will celebrate warm weather and bright blooms June 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “When the Roebling steel plant was open and homes in the company town were owned by the company, many of the workers and their families grew gardens with flowers as well as food,” says Lynne Calamia, Roebling Museum executive director. The Roebling Company itself often sponsored competitions to encourage

residents to tend their gardens and keep their properties looking put-together. “Continuing this tradition with our Garden Tour builds pride in our community and gives residents a chance to show off their green thumbs,” Calamia said. The Roebling Museum tells the story of the origins and growth of Roebling, a company town built in 1905 by the Roebling Company. The village of Roebling, including 700 homes, is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and every one of its buildings has a story to tell. Exhibits, tours, and programs document the majority immigrant workforce that built the iconic suspension bridges of the American industrial age. The tour will start at the Roebling Museum, located at 100 Second Ave. After checking in, participants will receive a map of locations included on the route, plus some added historic highlights. The tour is appropriate for walking, driving or biking, and a guided tour is also set for 1 p.m. Tickets cost $15. Proceeds support the museum. Register at roeblingmuseum.org, in person on the day of the tour or by calling (609) 499-7200.

Trenton The Old Mill Hill Society, in collaboration with residents of the historic neighborhood, will host its 30th annual Garden Tour June 12 from noon to 5 p.m., rain or shine. The neighborhood, composed primarily of 19th century row houses, will welcome guests in-person to the self-guided walking tour through 15 gardens— attendees will see the intersection of nature and city living, coupled with residents’ personal style. Settled in 1679, Mill Hill is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Trenton

and the site of both battles of Trenton in 1776, where George Washington defeated the British Army and turned the tides of the Revolutionary War. Annual re-enactments take place in Mill Hill Park. The neighborhood of Mill Hill was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. “Following last year’s virtual house tour, the Mill Hill neighborhood looks forward to once again welcoming new and returning guests,” said event cochair Amanda Chevalier. “We can’t wait to reconnect with visitors, share our welcoming and diverse community, and See GARDEN, Page 4

otox for migraines. Stem cell injections to regenerate tissue and organs. Gummy Bears infused with THC. Platelet-Rich Plasma to treat conditions from sports injuries and wounds to hair loss from chemotherapy. These are just a few of the cutting-edge therapies used by Dr. Ronak Patel, the founder and medical director of Regenerative Spine and Pain Institute in Plainsboro. “Many of these treatments may come as a surprise to patients suffering from chronic pain, especially those who think that their pain — and poor quality of life — is something they have to endure,” Dr. Patel notes. A double board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management specialist, Dr. Patel focuses on treating pain in the back, neck, face, and joints as well as pain related to cancer and chemotherapy. With so many different pain-causing illnesses, injuries, and conditions, treatments must be carefully customized to fit the needs of each individual patient. Regenerative Medicine/ Stem Cell Therapy. Regenerative medicine is a fastgrowing, highly developed treatment that helps the body heal or rebuild itself. Dr. Patel uses stem cell therapy to treat ailments, particularly low back or neck pain, caused by degenerative vertebral discs or joint pain in the shoulders, hips, or knees caused by osteoarthritis. The patient’s stem cells are removed, purified, concentrated, and injected into the injured or weakened tissue. Stem cell therapy can also speed recovery and help avoid surgery. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). A favorite treatment for sports injuries, PRP uses the patient’s blood to produce a platelet-rich plasma that targets a host of chronic and acute pain conditions, including muscle strain, arthritis, tendinosis, cartilage injuries, joint inflammation, and wound care. The treatment is also used in orthopedic and plastic surgery. By synthesizing platelets and releasing proteins, PRP can aid in generating new tissue. And it has helped chemotherapy patients grow back hair faster and thicker.

Cannabis Therapy. The legalization of medical marijuana has brought new treatment options. “We are very excited by the potential of cannabis-based treatments and we comply fully with New Jersey’s evolving regulations,” says Dr. Patel. He uses a local dispensary to provide treatments, which include edibles such as gummy bears and cannabis-based rubbing and vaping oils. Minimally Invasive Therapy. Dr. Patel offers a wide variety of minimally invasive therapies. These include epidural steroid injections, facet joint injections, radiofrequency ablation, and spinal cord stimulation for patients suffering from chronic neck and back pain stemming from herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis. His goal is to help his patients avoid surgery and at the same time regain functionality. Thanks to these and other game-changing treatments, pain levels can be greatly reduced or eliminated and quality of life enhanced. Says Dr. Patel, “Stop your pain. Start your life.”

The next generation of filmmaking Toby Ilogu talks creating in 2021 By Sam Sciarrotta

Toby Ilogu is always up to something. The 19-year-old Montgomery resident loves to dive headfirst into a project, whether it’s studying cryptocurrency or making short films. Now, he’s channeling his energy into TikTok, where he’s amassed over 100,000 followers, starting with first-person videos and evolving into the Everyday Show series, where he dons a suit, sets up camp in Princeton and conducts man-on-the-street-style interviews with anybody who wants to participate. Ilogu, a graduate of the Lawrenceville School and now a film student at USC, asks whimsical questions like “Are you stupid?” and “Name that Black celebrity.” The videos usually take their own form from there. “I’m very much into that raw, semiawkward humor,” he said. We sat down with Ilogu and talked quarantine creativity, Gen Z filmmaking and more. An edited version of the interview follows. *** Six09: What was it like to start your first year of college in the middle of all of this? Ilogu: I was able to do my fall semester. Film school was my dream. Early on in high school, I knew that I wanted to pursue video or film school in some capacity. USC was, like, the college on the hill. It was my dream school. When I got in, it was a dream come true. I was living the dream for a few months until COVID came around and really just shook everything up. My dream school turned into a nightmare. I did this fall semester online, and right before the spring semester, I thought, “I can’t do this. I hate this experience.” It was supposed to be the best thing in the world. I talked to my parents and very heavily petitioned to take the spring semester off. That’s what I ended up doing. Six09: Are you going back in the fall? Ilogu: That’s the plan. Mid-August, actually. Six09: You said that you’ve been interested in filmmaking forever. What sparked that interest for you? Were there any filmmakers that you admired as a kid? What made you dive into that? Ilogu: A lot of people might say, “I grew up watching these films. My parents put me onto Scorsese and Speilberg.” Quite honestly, that wasn’t me. I grew up on YouTube. I was on YouTube

earlier than I should’ve been. When I was growing up, my parents told my two older siblings and I, “No watching TV during the week.” Most of elementary school, I was reading a lot. I was always checking stuff out from the library. Then, we got a laptop, and that’s when I started perusing the internet. YouTube was there, and I was like, “Well, it’s not TV.” Six09: That’s the loophole. Ilogu: Exactly. I looked up to YouTube stars early on, more than any film director. Six09: I feel like that’s kind of the path that a lot of creators in your generation are following. Do you see that, too? Ilogu: Yeah. At film school, there are a lot of purists. People will say, “The YouTube stuff, that’s not real filmmaking. TikTok is a bastardized version of visual media.” But this is the stuff that I like. By all means, people can pursue what they want to pursue. I’ve heard that you go to a classroom of third graders, and half of them will say they want to be YouTubers when they grow up. Those are the people they’re engaging with. And it’s such a versatile medium. Anybody with just about any passion could make content around that passion. I think it’s just a matter of what people are being exposed to at a young age. Six09: Is that how you got into TikTok? Ilogu: From the start, I always took a very strategic approach to TikTok. I didn’t just stumble onto the app. I knew of TikTok when it was musical.ly. I would watch these YouTube compilations of cringey kids lipsyncing to songs. I was like, “I don’t think this stuff is for me.” But then I thought, “Wait a second, there’s so much potential.” The app can be anything that you make it. You can’t pigeonhole a whole platform just by the content that a handful of people are making. My first venture into TikTok was when I got to college, toward the end of 2019. I started with a joint account. The plan was that a few of us on the floor I was living on were going to make cinematic TikToks. Eventually, most of the group lost interest. That was it for some time. I kept the app for a little bit, then deleted it. It was on and off until quarantine, where I said, “Yeah, let me start making TikToks.” I feel like there’s a lot of potential to just grow an audience. I’m not exactly sure what it is I want to do in the future, but whatever it is, if it’s creative, it’s going to need an audience. Six09: Did it kind of help you pass the time during quarantine after starting at your dream school and

then coming back home and doing it all online? Did TikTok help you channel your creativity? Ilogu: Yeah, that’s a narrative that a lot of people seem to have. That’s exactly what it was. Also, me personally, I always have some sort of mission. I like to feel like I’m working toward something. I had a whole bunch of different things I was doing, but TikTok was the throughline. All throughout quarantine, I was HSM Shredders learning about different things. First, it Strip & Cross-Cut Cross was investing and technical imbalances and cryptocurrency. successful. What I find is that the most viral videos are always interacting with other people. There’s a certain element that you can’t get from a bedroom. I believe as a creator, you need to break the bedroom wall at some point, or else you’ll always be confined to those four walls. I know that the public interview is a viral format. It just works. I said to myself, “How can I do this in a way that is true to me?” I definitely got inspiration from Jimmy Kimmel’s Pedestrian Questions. And I knew that I wanted to carry the suit somehow. It was working before. I came up with the idea, and I just sort of did it. Six09: You seem so well-suited to that man-on-the-street kind of interview. Does that come naturally to you, or do you have to psych yourself up before you go outside and start asking people these questions? Ilogu: I do have experience with video journalism. Lawrenceville has a newscast, and from 2015 to 2019, that was my thing. That’s where I learned how to edit videos. Everything I know about videography, framing, the on-camera presence, everything I know came from that video news club. It really is one of the best high school news shows in the world. I’m not just saying that. What they’re doing is very special, and it gave me everything I needed to know to keep doing this creative stuff. I have experience on both sides of the camera. But there are awkward moments. I’m not a natural at all. And I put it into the video. If it’s awkward, it’s because I’m awkward in that moment. Sometimes I’m in character, kind of a game show host, and other times, Toby just sort of seeps out, and Toby doesn’t always say the right thing at the right time. Toby isn’t always the most conversational in the traditional sense. I think that just adds to the show. One of the Are You Stupid videos, the person said “Yes.” I said, “What’s the last dumb thing that you did?” “This interview.” I was like, “Wow, she really said that.” I had to walk it off a little bit. I was shook. Six09: Has it been easier to approach people now that people are getting vaccinated and things are starting to open up a little more? Ilogu: Oh, definitely. A lot of people are a lot more comfortable being approached and being around other people. Honestly, I think my show kind of celebrates that. It celebrates getting back to some type of normalcy, even if that’s just everyday interactions that you have on the street. I guess that’s building a little bit of a narrative around the name. I was thinking, like, Late Night, The Tonight Show. How about The Everyday Show? I wanted to post on TikTok just about every day, so I thought it could work. Beyond that, I’m approaching everyday people on the street. One way of growing on social media is a name drop. But the main draw isn’t toward the creator or the content. It’s likely toward that other person. I feel like that’s not very conducive to a long-term relationship, especially if you’re a new creator. With everyday people, I’m not chatting with celebrities. It’s not an aspirational thing I’m going for with my content. It’s more like conversations. Yeah, they’re awkward, but that’s like. Life is awkward. We gotta lean into that more.

Restaurants still getting winged by pandemic Occupancy limits are lifted, but rising costs and staffing issues are testing the entire food industry By Joe Emanski

New Jersey restaurateurs waited a long time for the day to come when they could once again fill their establishments to capacity. So when Gov. Phil Murphy made the announcement in early May relaxing capacity restrictions and seat customers at the bar, it was expected to be an occasion for celebration. But few restaurant owners have been in the mood to celebrate lately. It turns out that coming out of a pandemic isn’t any easier than heading into one. While 2020 felt like one long harrowing crisis, this year has brought on many new crises of its own. Like the dishwasher shortage. The foam container shortage. The lobster shortage. And, of course, the Great Chicken Wing Shortage of 2021. “We are having more problems now, honestly, than during COVID,” says

Giovanni “John” Balsamo, who coowns Villaggio Iccara in Yardville with his wife, Phyllis. “Yes, the drop in the amount of business was not good, but also we cut down on huge expenses so we survived, and we had a beautiful take out business. But now I’m having more trouble figuring it out. Between food cost and labor … it’s not sustainable.” Restaurants know that things will happen from time to time to disrupt the supply chain: a temporary milk shortage can cause cheese prices to rise, mudslides in California can send produce prices through the roof for a few weeks, until supply returns to normal. “You cope with that,” Balsamo says. “What we cannot cope with is when a case of wings goes from $68 to $139.” A specialty of the house at Iccara is an appetizer of chicken wings that are roasted in the restaurant’s wood-fired brick oven. But in May, Balsamo took the wings off the menu, rather than raise the price of the dish to reflect the rise in his cost. “People love our wings. so they say, ‘Why don’t you charge $3 more?’ Because I love my customers,” he says. “They’ve supported us for 30 years. I don’t want to do that to them.” Balsamo says scallops that recently cost

Taco-spiced chicken wings from Wildflowers in Pennington. The wholesale cost of wings has risen to a point where some restaurants are taking them off the menu. (Facebook photo.) him $18 a pound now cost $34, and other shellfish are along similar lines. The Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported last month that Maine seafood shacks were charging as much $34 for a lobster roll. Balsamo said he probably will have to

increase the prices on many items on his menu by a dollar to a dollar-fifty, which would not cover the price increases, but which would at least help him close the gap. Customers may not always believe it, but restaurateurs are usually reluctant to increase their prices. “There is a line that you don’t want to cross. You don’t want people to think it’s too expensive to go out to eat, let’s find an alternative,” Balsamo says. “The less the price, the more business you do. But if it costs you $1,000 more every week to buy chicken, you’ve got to increase prices at least a dollar.” So why the rise in prices now? Weather is one reason. A huge winter storm swept the Southwestern United States and Mexico in February, leaving huge swaths of Texas without power for days. The poultry and livestock industries are still bouncing back from losses suffered as a result of the storm. A harsh winter has also been cited as a factor in the decreased supply of Maine lobsters. Bad weather has meant fewer boats on the water, and fewer lobsters in it. Kinks in the supply chain also continue to bedevil the industry on a number of fronts. The Department of Agriculture, in its April Labor, Poultry and Livestock

Outlook, cited labor issues (read: a lack of qualified workers) as a factor in the reduced supply of chicken. But the main reason prices are up and supply is strained is simply high demand. Prices actually jumped even higher at the start of the pandemic, when there were breakdowns up and down the supply chains — but that came at a time when demand was very low. Now, restaurants are gearing up for more customers, and some of them want to be fed like they haven’t had a good steak in a year. Those restaurants purged much of their cold-stored food during the lean months of the pandemic, meaning that many are now buying in large quantities to restock their freezers on top of serving fresh products today. Meanwhile, just too darn many people turned to chicken wings for comfort during the pandemic, and too many home cooks got comfortable using their air fryers over the past year. Retail demand remains high even as restaurants reopen, and producers will have to raise more animals to keep up. “As the restaurant sector begins to reopen, in the short term, supplying the growing demand for chicken will be a challenge,” wrote the Department of Agriculture in its May Outlook. *** There is also the question of where all the restaurant workers have gone. Now that restaurants are able to fill most of their seats again, most are anxiously on the lookout for cooks, servers, bartenders and dishwashers. And many are find-

Taste Trenton to return after 2020 hiatus

Taste Trenton is coming back full throttle after suspending its 2020 self-guided tour of restaurants due to the coronavirus pandemic. After suspending its 2020 selfguided tour of Trenton restaurants, Taste Trenton has announced that it will curate an appropriately sociallydistanced excursion to the capital city’s restaurants this summer during the weekend of June 11–13. The not-for-profit effort, initially begun in 2016, is designed to introduce Trenton residents and guests from across the region to the vast culinary and eating options available in many corners of the city. What began as a day-long event with just a dozen restaurant in the Chambersburg region, evolved to three days and 40 establishments across the city in June 2019. “We’d been on the fence about offering the tour this summer,” Taste Trenton coordinator Bernard McMullan said in a media release. “But we decided to give our local restaurants a boost by getting people across their thresholds as soon as possible. We applaud their efforts to stay open during the past 15 months.” The format remains the same as in past years. Participants or “food tourists” purchase wristbands ($7 per day; $10 for entire weekend) from Taste Trenton and receive a guide

2020 Top Salesperson

Jeannette Hosri

Frank Collazo

Thomas Belardino

I came to Coleman 4 years ago with no automotive experience. I have continually earned the Top Sales Consultant title. I would attribute my success to my strong drive, product knowledge, motivation and listening skills. My goal is always to hear the wants and needs of customers throughout the sales process to give them a great buying experience. When I’m not working, I love to run.

Having worked at Coleman for 35 years, I feel my strongest attributes are my product knowledge and my friendly sales approach. I always put myself in my customers shoes, treating them as I would want to be treated. Speaking fluent Spanish is also very helpful. When I’m not selling cars, I love golfing and spending time with my two young children on roller coasters and water rides.

I joined the Coleman team 4 months ago but have over 30 years of retail and automotive experience. Customers can expect honesty, loyalty and a high commitment to customer service. I strive to make every customer’s experience at Coleman the best car buying experience they’ve ever had. As for my personal life, I spend most of my time with my family and friends and also enjoy sports.

At first, it was disheartening to miss out on seeing my friends in person and getting the traditional senior year experience. But, I found ways to stay connected with my friends virtually, like streaming basketball games and watching movies, and loved going to our senior activities together. It may not have been the year I envisioned for myself, but I still made lifelong memories with my favorite people. The Class of 2021’s senior year has been unique, to say the least. Though it was unfortunate that we were not able to experience some of the privileges of a typical senior year, I am endlessly thankful to the parents, teachers, and administrators that worked extremely hard to give us a variety of exciting senior activities to choose from, all while showing their support for the Class of 2021.

RHS activities: FIRST Robotics, Model UN, Science Olympiad, cross country, track and field, World Language Honor Society, National Honor Society What was it like to experience your senior year at the tail end of a pandemic? RHS has done a fantastic job of trying to restore as much normalcy to this year as possible. With the senior activities they planned for us and the opportunities to return to various clubs and sports, I was able to make the most out of a bad situation and have a memorable senior year.

RHS activities: Red Cross, Math League, ONE Project, National Honor Society, World Language Honor Society What was it like to experience your senior year at the tail end of a pandemic? What was it like to experience your senior year at the tail end of a pandemic? Honestly it started out quite difficult in terms of staying motivated to work, but after 9 months of online tests, social distancing, and zoom calls, I can safely say I am still not motivated to do anything. RHS activities: FIRST Robotics, National Honor Society, Red Cross, Math League, Model UN What was it like to experience your senior year at the tail end of a pandemic? It was definitely hard keeping myself motivated while doing online school, especially without the direct support of my teachers and friends, but I’m glad I pushed through and I’m extremely happy with how things ended up this year. Although we missed out on many of the typical senior activities, I’m incredibly grateful for still having prom and graduation to look forward to, and in general, for all the good memories I’ve made these past four years at RHS.

RHS activities: First Robotics, National Honor Society, Senior Online Literacy What was it like to experience your senior year at the tail end of a pandemic? It was interesting to say the least. The time seeing all my friends and teachers was almost zero, other than the rare occasions we were permitted to hang out. It was a new experience, even though it wasn’t the most ideal experience it was still one that was very much worth remembering. RHS activities: National Honor Society, Math League, Science Olympiad, World Language Honor Society, & Robbinsville Extended Day Volunteering/Employment What was it like to experience your senior year at the tail end of a pandemic? With such a senior year, it was partially dissatisfying to not spend time with friends as much in school and having limited senior privileges/activities, but also rewarding as I feel the experience offered me a new found understanding of the importance of the academic environment of school, proved to me how quick even a year of mundane online learning can pass and the need to cherish moments as they occur, and taught me how to adapt in the face of a seemingly endless adversity through having hope for a normal, restriction free future. Favorite quote: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It’s the courage to continue that counts.” –Winston Churchill

RHS activities: Debate, tennis, National Honor Society, World Language Honor Society What was it like to experience your senior year at the tail end of a pandemic? If I could describe my senior year in one word, I would go with “easy.” A considerably decreased workload and the ease of accessing class virtually made my academic year a breeze. In the midst of all this, I was still able to enjoy a full senior tennis season in the spring. Although I would have loved to go to Disney, I still had a pretty fun and relaxed year. You can’t expect to gain anything if you don’t sacrifice anything. Favorite quote: “I used to try and do backflips a lot, but I used to bang my head more often than not, so I gave it up.” -Anthony Starr

There simply would not be enough space in this publication to accurately portray what Vince Calcagno has meant to the Township of Robbinsville (formerly known as Washington Township) … and to me. Vince has been a partner and a friend. He is a tireless elected official, a dedicated volunteer and allaround great guy. I have proudly served under two forms of governments with Vince. He took me under his wing back in 2005 and trained me well. While we are so happy that you are “going out on top” and will get to enjoy your retirement, we will miss you, your wisdom and your advocacy. Knowing you are still close by and a phone call away gives us all great comfort. For this month’s column, it is an honor to turn this space over to Senior Center Director Renee Burns, who would like to pay tribute to a man who has done so much to make our center one of the best in the State of New Jersey. “Township Councilman Vince Calcagno has announced that he will retire from local government following a highly distinguished career in public service. As many of you know very well, Vince was a tireless advocate for our senior community and I have had the pleasure of working side-by-side with him for the past 20 years as he served as the liaison to the Senior Citizen’s Advisory Council. Vince was instrumental in the expansion of the Senior Center and its programs back in 2001 as it struck a real chord with him to see the Senior Center empty. I remember Vince holding meetings with advisory council members to get Dave Fried is the mayor of Robbinsville their input for programing and activ- Township.

ities. He had a vision to include the seniors in the decision-making process so the SC would become a functional, safe and healthy space for our elder adults to participate and bond together. Thanks largely to his efforts, the Robbinsville Senior Center is one of the more vibrant of its kind in all of Mercer County. Vince Calcagno also was instrumental in getting the County to expand their nutrition program to include the RSC in its daily lunch rotation in addition to adding it as an additional site to serve meals for those 60 years of age and older. The Meals on Wheels program for the homebound was instituted after the Mercer County Nutrition Program began in partnership with the Senior Center, thus creating another key opportunity to deliver vital services to those previously underserved. Vince advocated for transportation for our seniors and scheduled meetings with Mercer County to expand The Mercer County T.R.A.D.E. program to Robbinsville Township. Transportation was an integral piece for seniors unable to drive, or have any other type of transportation to get to the Senior Center for socialization or a meal. In 2018, the Senior Center celebrated its 13th annual open house. Vince was always present and supported this and other events throughout the years. Our seniors have developed long-lasting friendships with other members of the center over the years, which quite simply would not have been possible without Vince’s dedication and caring nature. From the very bottom of our hearts, thank you Vince for your advocacy and for being the voice for so many residents so they could have a true ‘Home Away From Home.’ We are going to miss you, my friend!”
