help bring a soccer field, a skatepark, and other amenities to a 99-acre proposed park near the Assunpink Creek, and a HVAC replacement for the Mill Hill Playhouse. The citywide basketball court renovation program will repave, recolor, and restripe basketball courts and install new backboards. These renovations will take place at Breunig Avenue Park, Cadwalader Park, Cooper Field, Edgewood Avenue Park, Franklin Park, Ike Williams Center, Jefferson Vincent Park, John Beech Playground, MLK Park, Monsignor Lipinski Park, Pat Pone Park, Sonny Vereen Park, Second Street Park, and Wilkinson Place Park. The basketball court renovation project will take approximately two months to complete. The council-approved project provides funding to Taylor Design Group Inc. to create architectural designs for the Taylor Avenue to Amtico Square sections of the Assunpink Greenway Park Project, which seeks to transform the vacant industrial properties and brownfields in the area into new recreational space. Due to general flooding of the site by the Assunpink Creek, the design will also be flood resilient. Current Assunpink Greenway Park designs for Amtico Square include many elements that were incorporated from extensive community outreach, including a street hockey rink, futsal soccer court, and hybrid courts that accommodate multiple other activities. A skatepark will cover approximately one-third of the site. The park will be installed with LED lighting for proper illumination and improved safety for park users. The city action also provides funding to remove and replace the outdated HVAC system of Mill Hill Playhouse at 205 East Front Street. The HVAC system has been malfunctioning for the last several years, requiring the city to provide portable air conditioners outside the playhouse to keep the building open. The new system will not only be considerably more energy efficient but will also provide the added protection of superior filtering and UV treatment to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Artworks awarded $25,000 NEA Our Town grant

rtworks, Trenton’s visual arts non-profit, has been approved for a $25,000 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Our Town grant to support the establishment of a public art program in Trenton in partnership with the City of Trenton and the public art organization Mural Arts Philadelphia. The NEA funding is one of 63 grants nationwide that the agency has approved to support projects that integrate arts, culture, and design

activities into efforts that strengthen communities by advancing local economic, physical, and/or social outcomes; ultimately laying the groundwork for sustainable systems change. “As the country and the arts sector begin to work towards a post-pandemic world, the National Endowment for the Arts is proud to announce this Our Town funding. These awards will support cross-sector partnerships such as the one lead by Artworks Trenton Inc. that demonstrate the power of the arts to help communities create a better future for themselves,” said NEA Acting Chairman Ann Eilers. “Artworks is incredibly excited to be receiving an NEA Our Town grant to develop a formal public art program for Trenton,” said Artworks Executive Director Lauren Otis. “Trenton already has a great legacy of public art and many exciting current projects underway, but this funding will enable us to establish a mechanism for the ongoing creation of community-based and communityfocused public art,” Otis said. “With the support of Mayor Reed Gusciora and his administration, and the expertise of Mural Arts Philadelphia, this project will help improve the lives of residents throughout Trenton and literally change the face of the city.” “This is great news for the Capital City arts community,” Gusciora said. “In Trenton we have the celebrated Art All Night festivities as well as other local art venues that add to the City’s landscape. It is hoped with continued NEA support we will see more flourishing artists among our residential byways.” In 2011, Artworks worked with Mural Arts Philadelphia and other partners on the creation of Philip Adams’ “Passage of Time” mural along Route 129 in Trenton’s South Ward. In recent years, Artworks has executed numerous other public art projects in Trenton with multiple community partners, and is actively planning several new projects at present. The creation of a public art program for Trenton will enable Artworks to move beyond a piecemeal, individual project-based approach and engage residents throughout the city on planning community-driven art projects in areas of the city beyond downtown. After the establishment of the program, benefiting from MAP’s expertise and best practices, Artworks will commence planning for public art projects in each of Trenton’s four wards. “We are honored to build on our past work with Artworks and the City of Trenton to support their developing a public art program that is driven by community and rooted in inclusive, participatory creative practices, ” said Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Executive Director, Jane Golden.” Through the Mural Arts Institute, we bring the Mural Arts model to other change-oriented cities looking to build their capacity in this important work.”

Trenton sneaker artist Dez FlyKickz flying high at Trenton Social By Dan Aubrey

‘I

n the sneaker culture to reintroduce a sneaker is a big deal,” says artist Dez FlyKickz in her Trenton studio as she prepares for her first solo exhibition at Trenton Social, the city restaurant with a gallery space used for monthly shows and openings. For Dez, her official business name using a portion of her birth name and a reference for kicking up in motion, “reintroduce” means using sneakers as a medium to create three-dimensional relief-like planes of work. “Red Air Jordans,” the Trenton-born and raised artist says about her choice of footwear to transform into artwork. “Any sneaker Michael Jordan wears is a big deal for sneaker lovers and people like that.” As for why she sees sneakers as a source of art and inspiration, Dez says, “Why not? I’m taking art and making it into a masterpiece. I create art inspired by sneakers, but my concept varies. Sneakers is pretty much the muse in what I do.” The subject is also personal. “As a kid it was how me and my parents bonded — especially my father, who took me to out to look for sneakers when I was young, especially Saturdays. Those beautiful moments stuck with me, and I wanted to incorporate them in my art.”

If you asked your parents for tennis shoes your favorite athletes use, you could conquer the world. Some of my favorite experiences, I was wearing my favorite Nikes. When I graduated from High school I wore Nikes. It takes me to moments that shaped my life and who I am.” She says it was 2009 when she stared creating art on sneakers by painting them. “I got the idea from watching others,” she says. Then there was her break-through

innovation. “I remember (the film character) Edward Scissorhands cutting things up and making them beautiful. I said, ‘I could do that.’” However, she continues, “I had never seen it done. There were no tutorials, so I said it shouldn’t be more difficult than cutting papers. I told myself that. I wasn’t as good as I am now, but you have to keep practicing. “When I stared creating the designs, people would say, ‘how does that happen?’ I didn’t have an answer. I said I dreamt about it. People are amazed that I can shape sneakers in different

shapes. It’s not that easy. I have to plan how I can execute a design to the best of my ability.” Although she can decide on what sneaker to use, she says, “You can’t plan the cuts. I plan out the patterns on which way that I want the sneakers to curve. I plan like an architect, a designer, and what is going to make it pop. I also work like it’s a puzzle.” Currently she says she only uses Nikes and Air Jordans in her work, but she is also a fan of the Nike Air Force One, calling it “the easiest sneaker to cut.” She says she gets her materials, new (roughly ranging from $100 upwards into the thousands) and old, by going on a “kind of hunt. I am a sneaker hunter. I go to thrift stores. I have also have people give me sneakers. When I feature sneakers that were donated I take a percentage for communityrelated projects.” One of those projects was FlyKickz CareBags. She says it started after traveling to sneaker conventions and accumulating a collection of hotel toiletries that she realized could be used to create bags of hygiene products for people in need. She also decided to add snacks and began handing them out in 2018. During that first year, she says more than 500 items were collected, and

contributions were received from Toronto, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Virginia, Miami, Los Angeles, and more. She says she distributed the Carebags with a “very special man,” her father, at the Trenton Train Station and outside downtown shelters. She continued and grew the project in 2019, then morphed it in 2020 to provide arts and craft supplies for Trenton children “no longer in a traditional classroom and in need of creating more ways to creatively express themselves during the pandemic.” As Dez writes on her website, “In less than 15 days with the help of over 21 contributors on her social media (we) collected over 1,300 art and craft supplies, raised $1,600 in monetary contributions and purchases creating 40 Carebags to safely hand deliver to each child” — mainly done on social media platforms. Additionally, the artist serves as a weekly Meals on Wheels deliverer to routes in Trenton and Ewing. About her artwork clients and her subject matter, Dez says, “Initially they were sneaker lovers. Now it has morphed into people who like art. Recently, I created a Darth Vader piece, Also DC comics and Batman Catwoman pieces. It is beyond sneaker lovers. It is people who want to support me, and that means a lot. “This is my first solo exhibition,” she says about the Trenton show

There are also lower priced accessories and promotional items. “Over the past few months people have bought two or three pieces from me. Even if it is a promotional piece that I’m rolling out I appreciate that. And I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to work with Footlocker in Philadelphia. We created a sneaker customizing workshop for youth there.” Assessing her current career development, she says, “I just to remind myself while I’m doing it that I love what I do. It can be challenging. Supplies can be extremely expensive. I make do with what I have, and it I’m ecstatic how it all turns out. They don’t call us the Garden State for nothing. Groups all across the region are planning outdoor garden tours to mark the transition from spring to summer. Here’s your guide to flowers, flora and greenery, throughout Burlington and Mercer counties.

Roebling

The Roebling Museum’s annual Garden Tour is back. The town, famous for building some of the country’s most iconic bridges, will celebrate warm weather and bright blooms June 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “When the Roebling steel plant was open and homes in the company town were owned by the company, many of the workers and their families grew gardens with flowers as well as food,” says Lynne Calamia, Roebling Museum executive director. The Roebling Company itself often sponsored competitions to encourage

residents to tend their gardens and keep their properties looking put-together. “Continuing this tradition with our Garden Tour builds pride in our community and gives residents a chance to show off their green thumbs,” Calamia said. The Roebling Museum tells the story of the origins and growth of Roebling, a company town built in 1905 by the Roebling Company. The village of Roebling, including 700 homes, is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and every one of its buildings has a story to tell. Exhibits, tours, and programs document the majority immigrant workforce that built the iconic suspension bridges of the American industrial age. The tour will start at the Roebling Museum, located at 100 Second Ave. After checking in, participants will receive a map of locations included on the route, plus some added historic highlights. The tour is appropriate for walking, driving or biking, and a guided tour is also set for 1 p.m. Tickets cost $15. Proceeds support the museum. Trenton The Old Mill Hill Society, in collaboration with residents of the historic neighborhood, will host its 30th annual Garden Tour June 12 from noon to 5 p.m., rain or shine. The neighborhood, composed primarily of 19th century row houses, will welcome guests in-person to the self-guided walking tour through 15 gardens— attendees will see the intersection of nature and city living, coupled with residents’ personal style. Settled in 1679, Mill Hill is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Trenton

and the site of both battles of Trenton in 1776, where George Washington defeated the British Army and turned the tides of the Revolutionary War. Annual re-enactments take place in Mill Hill Park. The Bordentown Historical Society will host its annual History in Bloom Garden Tour June 26 from noon to 5 p.m. Guests will take themselves on self-guided tours of Bordentown City’s gardens, parks and historical sites. The society says this year will be its biggest ever—20 gardens will be open to visitors. In addition to the tour, plein air artists will be painting landscapes at some of the locations. A landscape architect— with expertise in trees and plants native to New Jersey—will also be stationed at the 4 E. Chestnut St. garden from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. to answer gardening questions. The next generation of filmmaking Toby Ilogu talks creating in 2021 By Sam Sciarrotta

Toby Ilogu is always up to something. The 19-year-old Montgomery resident loves to dive headfirst into a project, whether it’s studying cryptocurrency or making short films. Now, he’s channeling his energy into TikTok, where he’s amassed over 100,000 followers, starting with first-person videos and evolving into the Everyday Show series, where he dons a suit, sets up camp in Princeton and conducts man-on-the-street-style interviews with anybody who wants to participate. Ilogu, a graduate of the Lawrenceville School and now a film student at USC, asks whimsical questions like “Are you stupid?” and “Name that Black celebrity.” The videos usually take their own form from there. “I’m very much into that raw, semiawkward humor,” he said. We sat down with Ilogu and talked quarantine creativity, Gen Z filmmaking and more. An edited version of the interview follows. *** Six09: What was it like to start your first year of college in the middle of all of this? Ilogu: I was able to do my fall semester. Film school was my dream. Early on in high school, I knew that I wanted to pursue video or film school in some capacity. USC was, like, the college on the hill. It was my dream school. When I got in, it was a dream come true. I was living the dream for a few months until COVID came around and really just shook everything up. My dream school turned into a nightmare. I did this fall semester online, and right before the spring semester, I thought, “I can’t do this. I hate this experience.” It was supposed to be the best thing in the world. I talked to my parents and very heavily petitioned to take the spring semester off. That’s what I ended up doing. Six09: Are you going back in the fall? Ilogu: That’s the plan. Mid-August, actually. Six09: You said that you’ve been interested in filmmaking forever. What sparked that interest for you? Were there any filmmakers that you admired as a kid? What made you dive into that? Ilogu: A lot of people might say, “I grew up watching these films. My parents put me onto Scorsese and Speilberg.” Quite honestly, that wasn’t me. I grew up on YouTube. I was on YouTube

earlier than I should’ve been. When I was growing up, my parents told my two older siblings and I, “No watching TV during the week.” Most of elementary school, I was reading a lot. I was always checking stuff out from the library. Then, we got a laptop, and that’s when I started perusing the internet. YouTube was there, and I was like, “Well, it’s not TV.” Six09: That’s the loophole. Ilogu: Exactly. I looked up to YouTube stars early on, more than any film director. Six09: I feel like that’s kind of the path that a lot of creators in your generation are following. Do you see that, too? Ilogu: Yeah. At film school, there are a lot of purists. People will say, “The YouTube stuff, that’s not real filmmaking. TikTok is a bastardized version of visual media.” But this is the stuff that I like. By all means, people can pursue what they want to pursue. I’ve heard that you go to a classroom of third graders, and half of them will say they want to be YouTubers when they grow up. Those are the people they’re engaging with. And it’s such a versatile medium. Anybody with just about any passion could make content around that passion. I think it’s just a matter of what people are being exposed to at a young age. Six09: Is that how you got into TikTok? Ilogu: From the start, I always took a very strategic approach to TikTok. I didn’t just stumble onto the app. I knew of TikTok when it was musical.ly. I would watch these YouTube compilations of cringey kids lipsyncing to songs. I was like, “I don’t think this stuff is for me.” But then I thought, “Wait a second, there’s so much potential.” The app can be anything that you make it. You can’t pigeonhole a whole platform just by the content that a handful of people are making. My first venture into TikTok was when I got to college, toward the end of 2019. I started with a joint account. The plan was that a few of us on the floor I was living on were going to make cinematic TikToks. Eventually, most of the group lost interest. That was it for some time. I kept the app for a little bit, then deleted it. It was on and off until quarantine, where I said, “Yeah, let me start making TikToks.” I feel like there’s a lot of potential to just grow an audience. I’m not exactly sure what it is I want to do in the future, but whatever it is, if it’s creative, it’s going to need an audience. Six09: Did it kind of help you pass the time during quarantine after starting at your dream school and

Also, me personally, I always have some sort of mission. I like to feel like I’m working toward something. I had a whole bunch of different things I was doing, but TikTok was the throughline. successful. What I find is that the most viral videos are always interacting with other people. There’s a certain element that you can’t get from a bedroom. I believe as a creator, you need to break the bedroom wall at some point, or else you’ll always be confined to those four walls. I know that the public interview is a viral format. It just works. I said to myself, “How can I do this in a way that is true to me?” I definitely got inspiration from Jimmy Kimmel’s Pedestrian Questions. And I knew that I wanted to carry the suit somehow. It was working before. I came up with the idea, and I just sort of did it. Six09: You seem so well-suited to that man-on-the-street kind of interview. Does that come naturally to you, or do you have to psych yourself up before you go outside and start asking people these questions? Ilogu: I do have experience with video journalism. Lawrenceville has a newscast, and from 2015 to 2019, that was my thing. That’s where I learned how to edit videos. Everything I know about videography, framing, the on-camera presence, everything I know came from that video news club. It really is one of the best high school news shows in the world. I’m not just saying that. What they’re doing is very special, and it gave me everything I needed to know to keep doing this creative stuff. I have experience on both sides of the camera. But there are awkward moments. I’m not a natural at all. And I put it into the video. If it’s awkward, it’s because I’m awkward in that moment. Sometimes I’m in character, kind of a game show host, and other times, Toby just sort of seeps out, and Toby doesn’t always say the right thing at the right time. Toby isn’t always the most conversational in the traditional sense. I think that just adds to the show. One of the Are You Stupid videos, the person said “Yes.” I said, “What’s the last dumb thing that you did?” “This interview.” I was like, “Wow, she really said that.” I had to walk it off a little bit. I was shook. Six09: Has it been easier to approach people now that people are getting vaccinated and things are starting to open up a little more? Ilogu: Oh, definitely. A lot of people are a lot more comfortable being approached and being around other people. Honestly, I think my show kind of celebrates that. It celebrates getting back to some type of normalcy, even if that’s just everyday interactions that you have on the street. I guess that’s building a little bit of a narrative around the name. I was thinking, like, Late Night, The Tonight Show. How about The Everyday Show? I wanted to post on TikTok just about every day, so I thought it could work. Beyond that, I’m approaching everyday people on the street. One way of growing on social media is a name drop. But the main draw isn’t toward the creator or the content. It’s likely toward that other person. I feel like that’s not very conducive to a long-term relationship, especially if you’re a new creator. With everyday people, I’m not chatting with celebrities. It’s not an aspirational thing I’m going for with my content. It’s more like conversations. Yeah, they’re awkward, but that’s like. Life is awkward. We gotta lean into that more.

Restaurants still getting winged by pandemic Occupancy limits are lifted, but rising costs and staffing issues are testing the entire food industry By Joe Emanski

New Jersey restaurateurs waited a long time for the day to come when they could once again fill their establishments to capacity. So when Gov. Phil Murphy made the announcement in early May relaxing capacity restrictions and seat customers at the bar, it was expected to be an occasion for celebration. But few restaurant owners have been in the mood to celebrate lately. It turns out that coming out of a pandemic isn’t any easier than heading into one. While 2020 felt like one long harrowing crisis, this year has brought on many new crises of its own. Like the dishwasher shortage. The foam container shortage. The lobster shortage. And, of course, the Great Chicken Wing Shortage of 2021. “We are having more problems now, honestly, than during COVID,” says

Giovanni “John” Balsamo, who coowns Villaggio Iccara in Yardville with his wife, Phyllis. “Yes, the drop in the amount of business was not good, but also we cut down on huge expenses so we survived, and we had a beautiful take out business. But now I’m having more trouble figuring it out. Between food cost and labor … it’s not sustainable.” Restaurants know that things will happen from time to time to disrupt the supply chain: a temporary milk shortage can cause cheese prices to rise, mudslides in California can send produce prices through the roof for a few weeks, until supply returns to normal. “You cope with that,” Balsamo says. “What we cannot cope with is when a case of wings goes from $68 to $139.” A specialty of the house at Iccara is an appetizer of chicken wings that are roasted in the restaurant’s wood-fired brick oven. But in May, Balsamo took the wings off the menu, rather than raise the price of the dish to reflect the rise in his cost. “People love our wings. so they say, ‘Why don’t you charge $3 more?’ Because I love my customers,” he says. “They’ve supported us for 30 years. I don’t want to do that to them.” Balsamo says scallops that recently cost

increase the prices on many items on his menu by a dollar to a dollar-fifty, which would not cover the price increases, but which would at least help him close the gap. Customers may not always believe it, but restaurateurs are usually reluctant to increase their prices. “There is a line that you don’t want to cross. You don’t want people to think it’s too expensive to go out to eat, let’s find an alternative,” Balsamo says. “The less the price, the more business you do. But if it costs you $1,000 more every week to buy chicken, you’ve got to increase prices at least a dollar.” So why the rise in prices now? Weather is one reason. A huge winter storm swept the Southwestern United States and Mexico in February, leaving huge swaths of Texas without power for days. The poultry and livestock industries are still bouncing back from losses suffered as a result of the storm. A harsh winter has also been cited as a factor in the decreased supply of Maine lobsters. Bad weather has meant fewer boats on the water, and fewer lobsters in it. Kinks in the supply chain also continue to bedevil the industry on a number of fronts. The Department of Agriculture, in its April Labor, Poultry and Livestock

Outlook, cited labor issues (read: a lack of qualified workers) as a factor in the reduced supply of chicken. But the main reason prices are up and supply is strained is simply high demand. Prices actually jumped even higher at the start of the pandemic, when there were breakdowns up and down the supply chains — but that came at a time when demand was very low. Now, restaurants are gearing up for more customers, and some of them want to be fed like they haven’t had a good steak in a year. Those restaurants purged much of their cold-stored food during the lean months of the pandemic, meaning that many are now buying in large quantities to restock their freezers on top of serving fresh products today. Meanwhile, just too darn many people turned to chicken wings for comfort during the pandemic, and too many home cooks got comfortable using their air fryers over the past year. Retail demand remains high even as restaurants reopen, and producers will have to raise more animals to keep up. “As the restaurant sector begins to reopen, in the short term, supplying the growing demand for chicken will be a challenge,” wrote the Department of Agriculture in its May Outlook. *** There is also the question of where all the restaurant workers have gone. Now that restaurants are able to fill most of their seats again, most are anxiously on the lookout for cooks, servers, bartenders and dishwashers. And many are find-

Taste Trenton to return after 2020 hiatus

Taste Trenton is coming back full throttle after suspending its 2020 self-guided tour of restaurants due to the coronavirus pandemic. After suspending its 2020 selfguided tour of Trenton restaurants, Taste Trenton has announced that it will curate an appropriately sociallydistanced excursion to the capital city’s restaurants this summer during the weekend of June 11–13. The not-for-profit effort, initially begun in 2016, is designed to introduce Trenton residents and guests from across the region to the vast culinary and eating options available in many corners of the city. What began as a day-long event with just a dozen restaurant in the Chambersburg region, evolved to three days and 40 establishments across the city in June 2019. “We’d been on the fence about offering the tour this summer,” Taste Trenton coordinator Bernard McMullan said in a media release. “But we decided to give our local restaurants a boost by getting people across their thresholds as soon as possible. We applaud their efforts to stay open during the past 15 months.” The format remains the same as in past years. assage Theatre, Trenton’s only nonprofit professional theater, presents a public reading of “The OK Trenton Project” on Saturday, June 19. The work was inspired by a 2017 event in which 16 students participating in a Trenton summer camp project led by HomeFront and supported by Grounds For Sculpture created a sculpture of hand from discarded materials only to find their “Helping Hands” censored by the City of Trenton and Trenton Police Department because of its potential resemblance to a gang sign. The incident caused a community outcry over police censorship and other issues related to class and race. With the assistance of 2019 MAP Fund project grant, Passage Theater assembled an artistic team that began a two-year play development process that resulted in a digital draft reading in the February, 2021. Participating in the artistic team are Passage performers, current and past Passage staff, and local artists, including writer and director Richard Bradford, Passage artistic director C. Jazz at the Candlelight

he Candlelight Lounge has reopened its doors and resumed its Saturday jazz offerings after several months being closed for the pandemic — something that hit both jazz musicians and Candlelight owner E. C. Bradley hard. Bradley attempted to find ways to set up jazz streaming to help the musicians and the lounge but didn’t find the support. Although discouraged and unsure of what COVID-19 was going to do to his business, Bradley had begun making Facebook postings in April saying he wanted to hear some live jazz. And then the doors reopened in May for socially distanced presentations by strong jazz pros from the tristate area. Yet despite vaccination rates going up and infection levels dropping, there is still an uncertainty in the air and while the lounge may seem like a nonprofit to support jazz musicians, it’s a business that needs regional jazz and cultural lovers to show that love. Old Barracks Museum

he Old Barracks Museum recently reopened for visitors to see this historic building that dates back to 1758, when it was used as winter British quarters during the French and Indian Wars, and later becoming historically important for its role in the Revolutionary War’s crucial Battle of Trenton in 1776. Visitors can meet 18th-century tradespeople who showcase Colonialera skills, see the bunks where soldiers slept, tour the Officers’ House, see a medical room, experience the thrill of a musket firing, and visit the Quartermaster’s Shop for souvenirs as well as items from local artisans. Following pandemic-related protocols, everyone must wear masks at all times. Visitation is limited to one group of no more than 10 people at a time. The Old Barracks is located at Barracks Street in downtown Trenton and open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $8 to $10, with children under five admitted free. State Department of Health building gets the public art treatment By Dan Aubrey

ew state buildings in Trenton are now the home to new statefunded public art. In late 2020 the New Jersey Department of the Treasury and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority announced the installation of artwork into the newly constructed New Jersey Department of Health building in Trenton — with 10 artists from the greater Trenton-Princeton region. The NJEDA calls the installation one of the final steps in the construction of the first new state office buildings in Trenton in more than 25 years. The state building project is a partnership between the NJ Department of the Treasury’s Division of Property Management and Construction and the NJEDA. It was launched during the waning days of Gov. Chris Christie’s administration, when the state treasury authorized the NJEDA to fund and provide development and construction services for the new Department of Health and Division of Taxation buildings in downtown Trenton. The move bypassed normal legislative practices and resulted in unsuccessful lawsuits initiated by both legislators and community leaders who

claimed the move put additional burdens on state taxpayers and deviated from state and city plans. Nevertheless plans for the building continued and Department of Health employees have moved into the new building, located at 55 North Willow Street. So too has the artwork installed as part of the State of New Jersey’s 1978 Percent for Art Act that requires up to 1.5 percent of the total construction cost of a state-sponsored project be used for art The Department of Health has been the first to install its work, which includes the following: “Seasons,” a lobby mural in mosaics by Penn Valley, Pennsylvania, public and studio artist Ava Blitz, who says, “My work is symbolic of the cycles of life, of the elements, and of the forces of growth, change, and evolution. It alludes to the passage of time, petrified in stone or concrete. Lines become blurred and distinctions ambiguous between fossil and artifact, natural history and cultural history, and the present, past and future.” “Adagio” is the terrazzo floor designed by New York City sculptor Roy Secord. with Mexican muralist and sculptor Mago Orono, Secord says on his website that his “primary expressions are large-scale, colorful and contemporary, abstract paintings on canvas as well as large-scale sculpture in a variety of mediums (primarily in steel or wood).” “Viola Sororia,” a sculpted bench, is by English born, Hudson, New York, artist Jon Isherwood who says in a statement, “I want the work to be continually morphing in the viewer’s mind. As one exists in this world you go through these mutations. We move through our experiences and assess them ... We all own a body, but never really sense it ... Making sculpture is an attempt to grasp complex feelings and emotions without interacting with other people. It’s not particularly complicated, but it is not easy to do. I want people to feel a sense of reverence for the act of looking.” “Chasing Dragons” is a painting on canvas by Adriana Groza, who says in a statement, “I am a Romanian-American visual artist. A past Princeton University associate professor of architecture, Chimacoff notes, “My perspective as a photographer is shaped by my knowledge, as an architect, of real and illusory space, and a love of materials. Seeking abstraction in the constructed, natural, and ordinary, my photographs explore the explicit geometries as well as the faceted, ambiguous spatial characteristics of cubism — confounding the obvious in a push toward the non-objective. A unique underlying geometric structure unifies each photograph.” “I Am Roebling” is by Alia Bensliman of Robbinsivlle. The Tunisia-born artist says she starts a painting with a subject in mind that she develops organically through intricate symbolism and arabesque lines that weave tales, often using pens with different thickness and inks, to create drawings that are “detailed, with textures, lines, and dots—not light and shade — and many, many colors.”

There, I studied hard and learned much about techniques in both art and architecture which have given me the tools to create the work I do today. I do move back and forth between the two styles and two mediums. “When I’m looking for urban street scenes that will become realistic paintings, I use watercolor. When I do abstract expressionist paintings I use oil, and I have no idea what the painting is going to look like when finished. The painting dictates its own course. The processes complement one another beautifully, and pure abstraction strengthens what I’m able to do when I paint realistically. My paintings look like traditional paintings from a distance, but upon closer inspection you gain a realization that they are not traditional at all.
