Anderson’s Frozen Custard hosts toy drive

A holiday Toy Drive will be sponsored by Anderson’s Frozen Custard from Nov. 1 to Dec. 8. Donations of new toys for ages 12 and under will be accepted at six area Anderson’s locations. Toys will be donated to Western New York Heroes who will distribute to families of local veterans. Starting Nov. 1, donations will be accepted at the following Anderson’s locations: •2369 Niagara Falls Boulevard, West Amherst •2235 Sheridan Dr., Kenmore •6075 Main St., Williamsville •3724 Union Rd., Cheektowaga •2634 Delaware Ave., Buffalo •4855 Transit Rd., Lancaster As a small token of appreciation for their support, donors will receive an Anderson’s Dessert Dollar Certificate for each new toy they donate. This holiday Toy Drive was founded by Michaela Kowalick in 2007. A student at Niagara University and an employee of Anderson’s at the Boulevard location, Kowalick

has encouraged her neighborhood to participate in the donation of gifts to give back to local charities. Donations have helped children through the Saint Christopher Parish Outreach Program, Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, Haven House of Buffalo and WNY Heroes. Throughout the past seven years, thousands of gifts have been delivered to local children for the holidays. This year, Kowalick has paired with Anderson’s to expand her neighborhood collection into a huge event. She hopes to have mountains of toys to deliver by the Dec. 8 deadline. No one wants to have a child feel left out during the holiday season. Now is your chance to give back to your community and our hometown heroes. The mission of WNY Heroes is to provide veterans, members of the armed services, and the widows and children of deceased veterans with access to essential services, financial assistance and resources that support their lives and sustain their dignity. For more information about Western New York Heroes, visit www.wnyheroes.org.

Buffalo resident receives first annual Bounce Back Award

The Chris Klug Foundation (CKF) is pleased to announce the winners of the first annual Bounce Back Award, presented by Astellas. The award recognizes two transplant recipients who exhibit a great quality of life. Nominations for the award were open Sept. 16 to Oct. 16. Over 75 nominations came in from 27 states across the country, and CKF staff and board members selected two winners. Winner Barbara Breckenridge, of Buffalo, is a 15-year kidney transplant recipient. Since being given a second chance at life, Breckenridge has dedicated her life to advocating for organ and tis-

sue donation. According to Sarah Diina, director of marketing and communications at the Upstate New York Transplant Center, “Barbara provides peer counseling for dialysis patients, transplant patients and their families, and newly diagnosed kidney disease individuals. Barbara facilitates a kidney support group at Erie County Medical Center, and had done many radio and television appearances promoting the Donate Life cause.” Breckenridge has also won over 31 medals at the Transplant Games, and has traveled to Australia, Sweden and South Africa to compete. Breckenridge’s tireless advocacy embodies the

spirit of the Bounce Back Award. Winner David Miller, of Semmes, Ala., received a liver from the family of a 13-year-old boy who lost his life after a tragic fall. Their selfless decision to donate their son’s organs gave Miller a second chance at life. Since his transplant, Miller has not let any obstacle slow him down. He educates high school students to teach their peers about organ and tissue donation and to register them as donors. Through his efforts, his group registered 863 organ donors. Miller has also won at the World Transplant Games and participates in 5K runs. Miller leads by example

and is truly deserving of the Bounce Back Award. The winners and one guest each will travel to Aspen, Colo. for the Chris Klug Foundation’s ninth annual Aspen Summit for Life weekend Dec. 5-6. CKF will host the winners and provide flights, lodging and tickets to all Summit for Life weekend events. The Bounce Back Award will be presented on Dec. 6 on top of Aspen Mountain in front of 400 racers and CKF supporters. “We are thrilled by the response to the first annual Bounce Back Award, presented by Astellas,” said Beth Slater, executive director, CKF. “We read

so many amazing stories of what is possible after a lifesaving transplant. Picking just two winners was an incredibly difficult task, but we’re so proud of Barbara and David and the way they live their lives.” Chris Klug, founder and chairman of CKF, looks forward to welcoming the Bounce Back Award winners to Aspen. “I couldn’t be more excited to welcome Barbara and David to my hometown of Aspen to celebrate life together and recognize their volunteerism to help others in the transplant community today. All over the country our Donor Dudes volunteers support our work and help us get the word

We can’t wait to recognize both winners here in Aspen at the ninth annual Aspen Summit for Life.” Becoming a registered organ and tissue donor is a way to have a lasting legacy, and it’s as simple as going to www.chrisklugfoundation.org to sign up. ECC honored as one of the nation’s best colleges for vets

Erie Community College is known as a Western New York leader in providing support and career-focused education for returning U.S. serviceman. But thanks to recent accolades in a servicemen-focused national publication, the college will enter 2015 recognized as one of the country’s best colleges for veterans. Military Times – an independent news and information organization dedicated to service members and their families; and comprised of the Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times – recently ranked ECC seventh overall (and tops in New York State) among the country’s best career and technical colleges in its annual “Best for Vets” issue, determined by a highly respected, nearly 110-question analysis of a college’s efforts to provide

veterans an environment for success. ECC’s devoted Veterans Affairs offices (at each campus), affordability and staff support for the college’s over 550 student vets earned high marks from the organization, but also validated the college’s veteran commitment at a national level. “This is not only another example of how ECC is gaining national recognition for its education, but another instance in which hard work pays off,” ECC President Jack Quinn said. “Our college’s Veterans Affairs staff has worked tirelessly to give our returning servicemen the support, education and the career opportunities they deserve, and we look forward to continuing this dedication to our U.S. veterans for years to come.” Regularly recognized as the best college for vets in the Buffalo-Niagara region,

ECC has also earned national recognition for its veteran efforts in such publications as Military Advanced Education Magazine, NJCAA Review and previously with Military Times EDGE Magazine. With a supportive community, classroomto-career opportunities and Veterans Affairs coordinators helping over 500 student veterans every year, ECC has positioned itself to provide the best educational, retraining and counseling support for Western New York’s servicemen and women. These attributes – combined with affordable tuition, accessible financial aid, veteran-specific educational assistance, and more than 100 degree and certificate programs – continue to earn the college both local and national acclaim as a top choice for student veterans.

Sophomore Birzon guides Flames to sectional championship By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER

The Williamsville East girls soccer team recently captured the Section VI Class A championship, and it was truly a team effort. Players such as senior captain Melinda Tiao, freshman forward Erica Martinsen and goalkeeper Juliana Panepento all played crucial roles in helping the team advance to the Far West Regionals. But without the contributions of one player in particular — sophomore captain Marissa Birzon — it’s likely that the Flames wouldn’t have been as successful as they

have been in 2014. “Marissa’s our best player, and she’s one of the best players that I’ve ever coached,“ Flames coach Chris Durr said. “She’s a tremendous leader and she really embodies everything that you would want in a soccer player, because she combines her work ethic with great skill, and she always puts the team ahead of herself.” Birzon first joined the Flames’ roster in the fall of 2012 as an eighth-grader, and immediately began to contribute. She finished second in on the team in scoring with 11 goals and 33 points and helped the Flames reach the Class A title game, but Durr and Birzon both said that most of her productivity was the result of using her speed to her advantage. “When she first made the roster, Marissa just relied a lot on her speed and sheer deter-

mination to get by,” Durr said. “Since then, she’s developed into a player that can apply a lot more to a game than just speed, especially with her shooting and passing skills.” Birzon’s statistics improved as a freshman to 13 goals and 34 points, which led the team in scoring. She also helped lead the Flames to a second straight appearance in the Class A title game, but fell short of victory again. Even so, her continued improvement started to catch the eye of her teammates, most notably Tiao. “When Marissa first joined varsity, I knew that she was going to be a great soccer player just because of the fact that she made the roster as an eighth-grader. That’s hard to do for anyone,” Tiao said. “But I also found out that she’s an awesome person. She cares

DAVE ECKHARDT

Marissa Birzon had 37 goals and 86 points this season. about her teammates a lot, she’s tough and she’s a leader.” Her leadership skills and her hard work would both pay off during the 2014 season, as Birzon more than doubled her 2013 output with 37 goals and

86 points. She was also voted team captain by Durr and her peers. Her toughness would also be in full display during the postseason, as Birzon injured her ankle in the Class A semifinal against Amherst. Forced to wear a walking boot for the rest of the week, she played through the pain against Grand Island in the Class A final and scored both of the Flames’ goals to lead her team to victory. “When you’ve got a player like that, you want them to step up in big moments, and for her to gut it out and produce with an injury like that, that was tremendous,” Durr said. “That right there showed how tough she is, and it was a huge boost for us psychologically to have her out there.” “I just had to find a way to toughen it out, and our trainers did a great job of helping me

get back on the field,” Birzon added. “It hurt at some points during the game, and it still hurts now, but I needed to push through the pain to help my team win. To win a sectional title for the first time, it was worth it to play.” No matter how far the Flames go in the Section VI state playoffs, what has to be concerning for Birzon’s opponents is that she has two years left of varsity eligibility – which means she can only get better. “As good as she’s been as a sophomore, she still has a ton of upside and her future looks really bright here at Will. East,” Durr said. “If she stays healthy and continues to get better, there’s no telling what she could do. She has the potential to be one of the best soccer players that Western New York has ever produced.”

Will North, Sweet Home stand out at cross country sectionals By Aaron Garland

WEST SENECA SUN SPORTS

Emilio Mancino’s vision for Sunshine Park, the home of his West Seneca West cross country program, to host Section VI Championships became reality Friday (Oct. 31). Elma Meadows Golf Course held the event almost exclusively for years and years. But Long Point State Park took it over in 2013 for the second time, and Sunshine, located on East and West Road in West Seneca, became the third host site in the state qualifying meet’s history. “From my perspective

I thought it went pretty smoothly,” said Mancino, who has coached West since 2002. “I really felt that the course was in as good of shape as we could possibly get it considering the conditions. Yes, it was muddy, but at least it didn’t rain. And it actually dried up pretty well considering the rain we did get in the days leading up.” It was a cloudy, yet relatively dry, Halloween, and the route at Sunshine met the approval of Brian Lasher, Will. North’s coach. He also thought the central location in Western New York made Sunshine an attractive race site. “It’s a nice area with a mix of woods and open grounds,” Lasher said.

“It’s a very fair course. In comparison to the other courses it’s a little flatter. We are excited to be here. It seemed like everything ran smoothly. Emilio does a really good job with preparation and I know that he really embraced the challenge of running the meet. I think this is great for the West Seneca community.” Lasher’s girls and boys teams both won Class A titles to earn trips to states. Colin Begley was the Spartans’ top male finisher (third, 16:34.40) while the girls were paced by Naomi Wistner (second, 18:52.80). With team victories on the girls’ side, Sweet Home (Class B), East Aurora (Class C) and Maple Grove

(Class D) also made states. EA’s Sophia Tasselmyer had the top time of the day among the girls, winning an individual Class C championship with an 18:37.40. Tasselmyer, a junior, claimed an individual title for Starpoint last year before transferring. Abbey Lang (Lockport, 18:45.10) was victorious in the A event while Aileen Doyle (Sweet Home, 18:42.40) and Hope Pietrocarlo (Maple Grove, 19:47.20) won sectional crowns in B and D, respectively. The EA boys also cruised to a team crown, placing all seven of its runners in the top 10. Kenny Vasbinder headed the Blue Devils,

running the fastest time of the day (15:49.00) en route to an individual sectional championship. Also in the boys field, Barker just beat out Maple Grove, 41-43, to claim the top team spot in Class D while Sweet Home won the Bs over second-place Hamburg. Niagara Falls’ Anthony Hawthorne (16:17.60) won an individual Class A championship while Mitchell Daddario (16:01.30) raced the fastest B time for Sweet Home. Clymer/Sherman/ Panama’s Josh Odell won a first-place patch in Class D with his 16:44.40. Overall, Lasher thinks with Sunshine following an irregular host in Long Point

last year, more debate may spark over changing the sectional site each season. There is always the want to compare year-to-year results, and performing at a singular place makes that simple, but he said he’s open to the discussion. “Other than that I think rotating the courses would be a good idea,” Lasher said. “Bring all the coaches together. Sometimes, I think, some input from more voices other than maybe our league representatives might be a good forum. Like a town hall meeting and we could talk in an open forum about the different courses — the plusses and everything else.” Twitter: @Garland_SUN

Billies beat Starpoint, earn overall Section VI Class A crown By Nick Sabato

LOCKPORT STAR SPORTS

Sports can be fun, exhilarating and sometimes devastating. Sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way. That was exactly what happened as Williamsville South came back late in the second half to defeat Starpoint 2-1 in overtime to advance to the Far West Regionals on Saturday night (Nov. 1). The game was within Starpoint’s grasp as it scored to take a 1-0 lead with 13 minutes left, but a crucial call by the officials gave the Billies a corner kick

and Joe Malinowski buried a pass by Lucas Principle to tie it up with 4:45 to go. Once the game went to overtime, it was team captain and leading scorer Jordan Ackerman that was able to get the game-winner to stun the previously unbeaten Spartans. “It’s a tough way to lose it,” said Starpoint head coach Scott Bindemann. “Honestly I think we had five minutes left and we were going to win the game. That goal just went in and it’s a tough the way that we ended up getting a corner kick after they had called a goal kick but it is what is it is. The kids played great all season long and I’m super proud of them.” The Spartans are used to playing a fast-paced, wideopen style of play as they came in averaging nearly four goals per game but they were able to

show a lot of grit and toughness in defeat by being able to play a grind-it-out style of game. KJ Maldiner finally broke a scoreless tie 67 minutes into the game for his 20th goal of the season and it appeared as if Starpoint was in full control at that point but it was not to be on this night. “We scored first,” said Bindemann. “The game was there for us. Unfortunately something went in and we were scrambling at the end there.” While often a goalkeeper may only remember the final goal getting past him, Starpoint keeper Sam DelPrince was tremendous all night in the net. DelPrince came up with eight huge saves in the game, including one with 12 seconds to play in regulation to send the game into overtime. “He was definitely the star,”

said Bindemann. “He made some big saves, he was directing traffic out there, he did a great job and he’s done that all season long for us so I wasn’t surprised by it. He should really hold his head up high because he did a great job.” The Spartans enjoyed a record-setting season this year. They won Class A2 for the first sectional championship in school history after finishing towards the bottom of the section a season ago. Starpoint finishes the season 17-1-2, and its 19 consecutive games without a defeat is tied for ninth all-time in Section VI history. Williamsville South (162-1) will advance to play the Section V champion on Saturday (Nov. 8) at Hamburg High School with a start time of 7:30 p.m.

Will South girls spikers win sectionals Sweet Home, Will. East By Nick Sabato

LOCKPORT STAR SPORTS

Last year, Starpoint caught lightning in a bottle by bringing home the Class B1 sectional championship after finishing the regular season with a losing record. This season, the Spartans came close, but lightning didn’t strike twice as the Lady Spartans fell to Williamsville South in the Class B1 title game 25-16, 25-13, 25-19 on Tuesday night (Nov. 4). Starpoint entered the contest as the sixth seed and had eight

players back from last year’s team, but the top-seeded Billies came out firing from the start to bring down the defending champs. In the first set, Williamsville South jumped out to a big lead. The Lady Spartans fought back to cut it in half, but they just couldn’t sustain the offense. The Billies would come out slow in the second set, and Starpoint led 8-7 at one point, but the top seed went on an 18-5 run to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the contest. “I think both teams had a bit of nerves right away,” said Williamsville South head coach Tom Sproull. “We had a few more unforced errors right away. They were a little juiced up, getting to the ball a little early, causing them to hit it deep. We had some more

hitting and serving errors than I would have liked but once they calmed down and just played their game and did what they needed to do.” South continued the run by scoring the first five points of the third set, and it seemed like Starpoint was stuck in quick sand that it couldn’t dig itself out of. Billies outside hitters Jessica Miller and Melissa Postek were dominant at the net all night, coming up with spike after spike that the Lady Spartans just couldn’t answer to. “Our two outsides or our right side when Jess Miller was in the front row,” said Sproull. “She would contribute a lot so we would move her all over the place. She hit on the outside and the right side. They are our go-to when we need them.”

While Williamsville South came in with the No. 1 seed in the section, Starpoint being the defending champion made them the favorite in many eyes, except the Billies. “We talked about really being the opposite,” said Sproull. “We felt like we were the favorite for a reason and we felt if we just played our game and did what have been doing all season long the results would take care of themselves. Starpoint is good, they’ve played us tough, and this is the third time that we have played them. They know us and we know them so we knew it was going to be a tough one. We were all playing our part.” Williamsville South took on Albion for the overall Class B championship on Thursday (Nov. 6). Results weren’t available at press time.

HOME IMPROVEMENT Keep warm, keep safe (NAPSI)—As autumn approaches, many people are looking forward to a break from the summer heat. However, soon that relief may turn chilly and your reliance on heating equipment will increase. The Electrical Safety Foundation International wants you to be aware of the risks associated with heating equipment and follow a few simple steps to help reduce your risk of a home fire. According to a report by the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths, responsible for an

estimated 490 in 2010. The leading factors contributing to ignition in home heating equipment fires were failure to clean the device, the heat source being too close to combustibles, and a mechanical failure or malfunction of the equipment. With proper installation, use and maintenance, you can reduce your risk of property loss, injury or death resulting from the use of heating equipment. With the increased use of heating equipment, carbon monoxide incidents are also more frequent in colder months. Gas-fueled heating devices were the primary heating source

Be sure to continue testing your carbon monoxide alarms and smoke alarms each month to help keep yourself and your loved ones safe. More Safe Heating Behaviors • All heaters need space. Keep things that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment. • Make sure you use only equipment that displays a label indicating it has undergone independent testing by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Inter-

tek (ETL), or the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). • Have a qualified professional install heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions. • Make sure all fuel-burning equipment is vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Also, be sure to remove snow or fallen leaves around the outlet to the outside to ensure proper venting of exhaust. • Have your heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional.

Store your mower in eight easy steps (NAPSI)—Chances are, your lawn mower has been a faithful fair-weather companion. So at the end of the mowing season, you want to give it the attention it deserves. Here are some tips on what you can do now to be sure your mower will start easily next mowing season. • Make sure your operator’s manual is on hand for quick reference whenever you work on your mower or any such equipment. • Remove the spark plug lead wire from the plug before doing any mower maintenance, and tape or tie it out of the way. • Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place away from gas cans, the water heater or furnace. • Change the oil. Old oil has lost much of its ability to coat and protect engine components, which could lead to damage down the road. Most people avoid changing the oil in their lawn mower because they think about having to tip the mower over to drain the old oil. They worry about spills in the driveway and a mess of rags and cardboard to catch spills. Oil removal kits make the process easier and a lot less messy. For example, the Briggs & Stratton 1.6-liter oil extractor pump has a long-reach hose so oil can be extracted through

filler or dipstick holes. It is important to return and recycle used oil at the proper collection center in your community. • Clean your mower. Brush or hose off leaves, grass and mud. Gently tip your walk-behind mower on its side to spray the underbody. If debris is caught on the blade, use a stick or tool to remove it— never use your hands. • Use a fuel stabilizer. Never store your lawn equipment with a partially full fuel tank. Either run the equipment out of fuel or use fuel stabilizer in a full tank of fuel. Add Advanced Formula Fuel Treatment and Stabilizer according to the package directions. Then—and this is important—run the mower for a few minutes so the stabilizer circulates through the carburetor. The stabilizer keeps fuel fresh for up to six months. Turn off the engine and completely fill the gas tank. A full tank will help prevent moisture from condensing in the tank, which can form rust that could break away and clog the carburetor. • Store your mower in a dry, protected place such as your garage or a garden shed. Never store it next to a furnace, water heater or appliance with a pilot light.
