New volleyball program started at St. John the Baptist A junior high girls’ volleyball program has started at St. John the Baptist School in Kenmore. Coached Johanna MacDonald, the girls’ team is quickly making a name for themselves among the Catholic schools circuit with a record of six wins and two losses to date. Interest in developing a program in which girls could learn the game prompted the school to reinstate volleyball into its athletic program. MacDonald is a
respected coach among the students, as she coaches the school’s track team and “Girls on the Run” program, too. The team decided to host a fundraiser to raise the $1,000 needed to acquire the necessary equipment. Eighth grader Anna Stang made three cozy, fleece blankets featuring the Buffalo Sabres and Bills, Marvel comic book characters, and Hello Kitty. The team sold tickets during before school
and during lunches and raised $500 in the process. Second grader Nadia Shilen and Kindergarteners Ricky Panowicz and Natalie Cook were the thrilled winners! The St. John’s Parent Athletic Association and an anonymous donor raised the remaining funds enabling the team to purchase a new net, pole pads, cable pads, six balls and an antenna. The St. John’s Jaguars look forward to ending the season strong.

Police found that no students or staff were in danger and that there is no cause for alarm,” Mirand said Oct. 19. “We are grateful for the assistance we received from police, and we wish to remind everyone that all allegations and threats of violence, in any form, are taken seriously and will be investigated fully.” When contacted last Friday, a representative for St. Joe’s was unable to confirm whether or not the school has punished the boy in question, as the school does not release any details regarding disciplinary actions it levies against its students, she said. Carosi confirmed that the minor St. Joe’s student is being charged as an adult. He is scheduled to appear in Town of Tonawanda Court on Nov. 6 for arraignment.

The results of the investigation revealed that [name redacted], and the specific student he named, were friends,” Carosi said. Community holds 10th annual run to cure childhood cancer By KImberlee Sabshin NT SUN CORRESPONDENT
This year, the City of Tonawanda will celebrate a decade of a local tradition for a good cause: helping to find a cure for childhood cancer. The 10th Annual Lindsay’s Legacy 5K Run takes place 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, and is named after Lindsay MacIver, a 2001 Tonawanda High School graduate who lost her battle with cancer at age 21, but whose legacy continues to live on. In March 2002, MacIver was diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of cancer that begins in soft tissue and leads to tumors in the muscle or fibrous tissue of the body. Although her cancer was advanced at the time of her diagnosis, she underwent chemotherapy, radiation treatment and surgery at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. This gave her nearly two and a half more years of life, until her death on July 21, 2004.
Since then, her mother, Bonnie MacIver-Mariani, has served as the director of the Lindsay’s Legacy 5K Run each year, with proceeds going to Carly’s Club of Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Carly’s Club is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to better the lives of children diagnosed with cancer, and raises money to help Roswell Park find a cure for childhood cancer in all of its forms. The race route, which begins on Morgan Street between Clinton and Bouck Streets, enables the runners to pass by the home on Morgan Street where Lindsay lived. Runners then proceed onto Kohler Street and onto Niagara Street alongside the Riverwalk, allowing runners a scenic view of Niawanda Park, the Niagara River and Veterans Park before ending at Clinton Park. Afterward, there will be a post-race party at the nearby American Legion Post 264 with food, raffles and local musicians. “We have an amazing turnout for our race each

year, and are currently one of the top five 5K races in Western New York. We anticipate between 750 and 900 runners and walkers,” MacIver-Mariani said Tuesday. “We have an amazing and dedicated group of core volunteers, and likewise countless volunteers from the community at large, both here in the City of Tonawanda, including Lindsay’s alma mater, Tonawanda High School, and other high schools and colleges in the area. The last two weeks before the race are very hectic, but it is a labor of love.” Frank Mariani, MacIver-Mariani’s husband and Lindsay’s stepfather, said Tuesday that some of those who volunteer to help organize the race choose to remain anonymous. “We’ve had a really good start with getting this thing off the ground…we were really lucky to have a team with the necessary skillset to get going with this. It takes a few years to really figure it out.” “Bonnie’s been the face of the organization for a long
time,” Mariani added. “It’s not just for runners, that’s one of the biggest things we want to stress. It’s a community event that a lot of people turn out for. We’ve had more people tell us, ‘It’s a great party; we’ll be back.’” When asked what it means to organize this event, MacIver-Mariani said she knows in her heart that her daughter would be happy her family, and her entire hometown community, have the event in her name. She recalled Lindsay’s “strength, courage, and determination to live.” “I also remember many conversations with her after being told that there were no new treatments available for her type of cancer,” MacIverMariani recalled. “Can you imagine being 21 years old and being told that? Can you imagine saying that about a 2-year-old, or an 8, 10 or 12-year-old? That is why we started Lindsay’s Legacy 5K Run: to continue raising awareness of childhood cancer, and to raise funds toward researching a cure.”

Hard Rock International introduces worldwide Hard Rock Roxtars launch for kids of all ages Hard Rock is rolling out the red carpet for its youngest rock stars to show off their best impressions. To launch the Hard Rock Roxtars program, Hard Rock Cafe Niagara Falls, USA will host the “Does Your Child Look Like a Rock Star?” contest on Saturday, Nov. 1. For one afternoon, kids, in costume or not, will eat free if each is with an adult purchasing an entree (one child eats free with one adult purchasing an entree; excludes purchase of an appetizer, salad or dessert). Guests can bring their favorite pint-sized rock star to the cafe dressed in their best costume for a chance to win a Hard Rock Cafe gift card or a 2015 birthday party (restrictions may apply) for eight of the rock star’s closest band members and entourage. No celebrity or musician has endorsed the “Does Your Child Look Like a Rock Star” contest.
As the city gears up for Halloween, Hard Rock Cafe Niagara Falls, USA will be on the lookout for the city’s future rock stars that look and dress the part. The kids’ activities, contest and live music will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1. Reservations are recommended. There will be arts and crafts as well as photo opportunities for kids from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. led by students of Mount St. Mary Academy’s entrepreneurship program. There will be live music performances with young artists including Francesca Harvey and Olivia Larson from Live! Starring … You! as well as Vincent Bonelli. Music is Art will be on hand throughout the event with information and giveaways for the kids. The “Parade of Costumes” will begin at noon, and judges will choose the winner directly following. The Grand Prize win-
ner may choose between a birthday party at the cafe or a Hard Rock gift card. Prizes will also be awarded for two runner-ups. Judging will be based on originality, quality and creativity of the costumes. The contest celebrates the unveiling of the Hard Rock Roxtars, a band of characters serving as brand ambassadors for Hard Rock’s multifaceted brand-wide programs catering to children of all ages, presented at Hard Rock Cafes, Hard Rock Hotels and Rock Shops worldwide. The Hard Rock Roxtars will provide fans of Hard Rock with an authentic, irreverent experience rich in music content, allowing the brand to connect with future and veteran rockers alike. Inspired by Hard Rock International’s paramount differentiator – music – this band of five characters and music performers, the Hard Rock Roxtars, each have
distinct personalities representing the individuality and freedom of artistic expression in children. Band members include Razzi, Sir Kingston, Styler, Buddy Jr and Skiddley. The Hard Rock Roxtars are each unapologetically original and designed to inspire kids of all ages to rock an inimitable brand of cool, allowing their originality to shine. “Hard Rock is thrilled to unveil the new Hard Rock Roxtars program,” said Allison Appoloney, general manager of Hard Rock Cafe Niagara Falls, USA. “We are delighted to be working with wonderful partners such as Live! Starring … You!, Music is Art and Mount St. Mary Academy.” Children who dine at Hard Rock Cafe Niagara Falls, USA will be greeted with their own activity book, Hard Rock Roxtarsthemed menus, guitarshaped plates and Hard Rock Roxtars photo op-
portunities. As part of The National Restaurant Association’s Kids LiveWell program in collaboration with Healthy Dining, a mission and online resource that helps parents and children alike select healthy menu options when dining out, Hard Rock Cafes worldwide will offer healthier food options, ranging from Skiddley’s “Not-so-diddley” chicken breast to the “twisted ‘n tasty” cavatappi pasta. When Hard Rock Roxtars travel, they do so in style, and families who stay at Hard Rock Hotels are immediately in the band. Kids will receive a special Hard Rock Roxtars Activity Book at check-in and unlimited entertainment at Hard Rock Roxity Kids Club, a family-friendly, music-inspired haven, customized per property, where kids rock to their own rhythm, catch a live Hard Rock Roxtars per-
formance or take part in experiential, engaging and music-infused learning activities. Hard Rock Roxity Kids Club is currently available at Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza and will soon be offered at additional Hard Rock Hotels worldwide. Allowing kids to continue the fun, take their favorite character home or look the part, Rock Shops at Hard Rock Cafes and Hotels worldwide, including Hard Rock Cafe Niagara Falls, USA, will feature the exclusive Hard Rock Roxtars collection of clothes, accessories and gear, including band tees and light up drum sticks. Collectible and original items will also be available for purchase at Hard Rock’s online Rock Shop at www.hardrock. com. A day at the farm Kindergarten students at St. John the Baptist School in Kenmore learned all about life on a farm when they visited Kelkenburg Farm in Clarence. More than 50 kindergarteners took turns milking goats and riding ponies…including their teacher, Alecia Stradley. Strandley explains, “Visiting the farm provides hands-on experiences for the kids to latch onto when we go back to the classroom. They will remember what it felt like to actually milk an animal or harvest a pumpkin. Anytime we can place a topic in an authentic setting, students will more readily retain that learning experience and apply it towards other topics, as well.” Many questions were answered during the tours, including why horses sleep standing up and why pigs tails are curly. Kindergartener Natalie Natalie Cook Cook said, “Watching the bees at work was a little scary because I was afraid they riding the pony the bes.!” a relaxing hay ride before might come sting me. Tonawanda district begins budget planning for 2015-16 year By KImberlee Sabshin NT SUN CORRESPONDENT
At its first 2015-16 budget advisory team meeting Tuesday, the Tonawanda City School District’s Board of Education and administrative officials outlined its tentative budget development calendar for next year’s budget. They also received a “state of our schools” presentation, which Director of Business and Finance Rubie Harris and Superintendent Dr. James Newton gave. The budget advisory team tentatively plans to review enrollment numbers for 2014-15 and anticipated numbers for 201516 at next month’s meeting, and will also discuss the veterans’ tax exemption and the district tax levy limit. By March 10, they plan to have a working draft budget, which will OPEN YEAR ROUND

then be subject to further review by the team, with updates to follow throughout the month. In April, the team plans to adopt its budget, which BOCES will then vote on by the end of the month. In April and May, the community will receive a presentation on the finalized budget, culminating in a budget hearing on May 12. In beginning to discuss plans for the district’s money, Harris outlined one of the major financial woes all state school districts face: the gap elimination adjustment, which she said has taken a total of $12.4 million from City of Tonawanda schools. Harris said the Erie County Association of School Boards issued a survey two months ago, asking all of Erie County to fill in as much information, dealing with loss of jobs and how much money, in dollar amounts, OPEN 7 DAYS

each district has lost as a direct result of the gap elimination adjustment. She presented the cumulative findings of the results for the Tonawanda City School District. “Though we have lost a tremendous amount of money because of the gap elimination adjustment, there are districts that have lost 80, 90, or 120 positions,” Harris said. “I think, through the efforts of the budget advisory team, the board and administrators, it has been tough, but a great deal has not been lost for us, which is a good thing. We’re hoping in the future, it gets better.” Harris said that although $12.4 million has been taken from state aid over the last five years, the state allowed the district to raise $7.9 million locally to make up this difference. However, the district was able to raise only

$554,596. With reductions the district has made over this time, shifting this cost directly onto the City of Tonawanda taxpayers would have resulted in a cumulative tax levy increase of 114.3 percent, which Harris called “unimaginable.” When asked how much information Harris sent to the school board association, she said some districts were very detailed about how many staff members, how much money and how many programs they lost, but they were given a total of “five or six” questions to answer. “That was not how the survey was sent to us, so we just gave the information they asked for,” Harris said. “We are working on a spreadsheet showing the

Since the GEA was introduced four years ago, New York schools have lost out on $7.7 billion in aid that was promised to them by law. That averages out to $2,895 per student over that period of time,” the video’s speaker said. Newton said the district previously had a grant writer “four years ago” and it recently hired another, but the person is not an employee of the district and does not receive additional benefits. Harris said the budget team will know next year’s allowable tax cap by the Nov. 25 budget meeting. The budget advisory team watched a short YouTube video on the gap elimination adjustment, a state aid reduction that former Governor David Paterson originally added in 2010 to help close New York State’s budget deficit of $10 billion dollars. Higgins presents family with Bronze Star medal, other medals earned by PFC Samuel J. Insalaco Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) presented military medals and honors, including the Bronze Star, to the family of World War II Veteran Private First Class Samuel J. Insalaco. “For your father’s bravery, commitment and sacrifices, it is truly our honor to present you with these medals on behalf of a grateful nation,” Higgins said as he presented the service medals over to the Insalaco family. Born in Pennsylvania, Samuel J. Insalaco moved to Buffalo and bravely enlisted in the U.S. Army May 28, 1942, completed his infantry training in Camp Croft in South Carolina, and served with the 1st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. The 1st Infantry Division led the fight against the Germans in the Invasion
of Normandy June 6, 1944, the largest seaborne invasion ever, more than 70 years ago. The Unit fiercely fought the Germans and became the first to capture a major German City in WWII when they seized Aachen on Oct. 21, 1944. The Tunisia Campaign was another battle that PFC Samuel J. Insalaco never forgot. He fought in Battle of Hill #523 in 1942, which was known as one of the bloodiest battles fought in North Africa during WWII. It was there where he became one of many soldiers captured by the enemy and then later escaped. PFC Insalaco fought in a total of five battles during WWII: the Invasion of Normandy, NorthernFrance, Rhineland, Sicily, and Tunisia, before being honorably discharged in
1945. PFC Samuel J. Insalaco passed away in 1989, but his son Nick Insalaco recently sent a letter to Congressman Higgins’ office. He wrote, “This year, as the nation and the world mark the 70th Anniversary of D-Day, the Invasion of Normandy, I can’t help but think of my dad and the other brave servicemen that risked their lives to free the world. They were truly a different breed, ‘The Greatest Generation.’ It is with his memory in mind that I am requesting the assistance of your office in securing information regarding any and all service awards or medals that may have been awarded to my father for his years of service in the U.S. Army during WWII.” Soldiers like PFC Insalaco are recognized as he-

roes because it was their determination to not give up in key battles like the Invasion of Normandy, which helped to turn the tide of the war leading to a victory for the Allied Forces. It is also important that we reflect upon the sacrifices that were made. According to some estimates, the Allied Forces suffered more than 10,000 casualties and more than 4,000 lost their lives on D-Day. Like many veterans, PFC Sam Insalaco was in a hurry to get home when the war ended, so he never looked into whether he was eligible for any medals. He married Sophie
and they raised a family on Buffalo’s West Side on 10th Street between Hudson and Maryland. Sam’s sons also served in the military, Nick served in the U.S. Army Reserves during the Vietnam War and Tom served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Higgins worked to secure Insalaco’s medals and presented the family with the Bronze Star; Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award; Presidential Unit Citation; European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 1 silver service star; World War II Victory Medal; Good Conduct Medal; and the
Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII. The Bronze Star is the fourth highest individual award in the U.S. military awarded to members of the military for meritorious service in a combat zone. The silver service star on the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal recognizes the five battles that PFC Samuel Insalaco fought in. The Presidential Unit Citation is awarded to units of the United States Armed Forces for the extraordinary heroism while fighting against an enemy.

City of North Tonawanda reports on progress with Sportsplex
City of North Tonawanda officials are stating that Sportsplex, the indoor soccer and tennis complex on Ridge Road in North Tonawanda, will remain closed until the fire and sprinkler systems are up and running according to state code at the facility. Sportsplex has been closed since July 17 when city officials placarded the building due to the numerous amounts of violations and non-compliances at the facility. The city has been working with Joe Robinson, owner of the
property, on the safety issues which needed to be addressed before the doors could be opened for public use. The main issues involved the repair of the roof, the electrical system, fire alarm system, heating system, and sprinkler system. While progress has been made to some of the various deficiencies, the fire and sprinkler systems need to be fixed before the city will open the doors for the safety of all occupants. During an inspection performed yesterday at the Sportsplex facility by
the City of North Tonawanda Fire Department, the following violations include, but are not limited to; a damaged and noncompliant fire suppression system that is in need of repairs, testing, and recertification, along with a damaged and disabled fire alarm system. Assistant Fire Prevention Chief Croop stated, “These violations have been well documented and are long standing. Our departments hope is that the repairs can be made as soon as possible and that
this valuable recreational facility will be available for the communities use with all of its required safety features back in service.” Fire Chief Lapham stated, “There are significant issues that must be addressed before they can be allowed to admit the public, according to New York State Building and Occupancy Codes. We, as the City and the Fire Department, do not wish to inflict hardships on property owners, but only to lookout for everyone’s safety.”

McGowan makes most of senior season By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
Maybe it was being in the moment of the win. Maybe it was helping Kenmore East pull off the unthinkable and upset heavily favored Ken West at Adams Field. Maybe it was the unexpected appearance of his older brother, Ryan, at the game. Or maybe it was everything all at once. When the final horn went, Kurt McGowan looked at the scoreboard and tears started to flow. The Bulldogs had just won 7-0 and scored its first victory over the rival Blue Devils since 2007. “It really was just the greatest feeling ever for being a Kenmore East football player especially with the rivalry with West,” McGowan said. “When you look at the entire (rivalry), they’ve won way more games
than we have. So when you’re on a Kenmore East football team and you get the opportunity to have that feeling, it’s the best feeling.” A special feeling indeed. It’s something Kurt was able to celebrate in the moment when his brother, Ryan McGowan, saw him on the field. Ryan was on the 2007 Bulldogs team that upset Ken West at Crosby Field. “It really meant a lot to me because I didn’t know he was coming. Because he lives in Philadelphia now,” McGowan said. “He, 7 years ago, did the same thing. But it was at Crosby. He beat West the last time it happened. He was there with (current East defensive coordinator) Cory (Martin) and head coach Matt Chimera.” McGowan, like the rest of his teammates, said that after battling through a difficult

Kurt McGowan and the Bulldogs beat Ken West. winless season, being able to pull it all together on that afternoon to beat West made all of the struggles of the season worthwhile. “We couldn’t believe it,” McGowan said. “We knew that we could do it, but in the moment that it did happen we just couldn’t believe that we in
that moment. We were 0-6 going into the game so we really had nothing to lose. So I think exchanging that disappointing regular season for that win, I think it’s totally worth it.” The model of consistency this season, and throughout his entire career, whether it was at linebacker or running
back, McGowan always gave the Bulldogs a chance to win. And he brought the kind of hard work and dedication that coaches would love to see from all of their players. “He’s been a pleasure to have around for three years,” said varsity head coach Matt Chimera. “He just works hard everyday. He’s extremely coachable. A coach’s dream. Whatever you ask him to do, he does. He’s a leader on the team. Although he’s not a real vocal leader, he’s a leader on the team. We were just talking about how much he has given us this year. Offensively, defensively. We only have the one win, but man, he kept us in games.” Already the owner of the Ken East all-time wins list in wrestling with 114 that he set in his sophomore season, McGowan stamped his name
on another page in the ‘Dogs record book when he set a single-game rushing mark of 232 yards against North Tonawanda on Oct.3. Uncertain if he will return to the wrestling team after taking last season off, McGowan is preparing himself for the reality that his last varsity football game could be his final moment in a scholastic sports setting. So he’s trying to make the most of it. But not just of the final game or this final week but also the time with his teammates. McGowan said the everlasting bond of friendship that he has created with his football band of brothers has made this a special year — regardless of what the wins and losses read. “I have so many good friends on this team,” said McGowan. “When I look back I’m just gonna remember all the good times I’ve had playing the game I love with friends I love.”
Goalkeeper Ngo earns teammates’ trust By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
It was a moment that Sara Ngo will remember for the rest of her life. Ngo, a Mount St. Mary junior, had just turned away 33 shots as part of a sparkling performance in a 1-0 double overtime loss to Nichols on Oct.14. It was an outing that earned Ngo not only the team’s Gatorade Player of the Game award, but also the Super 7 Athlete of the Week trophy. But what meant the most to Ngo was the smile and the hug Thunder coach Marissa Dauria gave her after the game. “What I really liked was after
the game my coach gave me a hug. That was a big thing,” Ngo said. “I didn’t really care about the other two.” Just completing her first full season of varsity, Ngo was the rock in net that allowed a young Thunder team to compete in every single game this season. For Ngo, knowing that she has won the respect and faith of her coaches and teammates is far more priceless to her then any award could ever be. “It took a while for me to actually gain their trust,” said Ngo. “They couldn’t believe I could so some of these things. Eventually they did believe (in) me and they trusted me. And they knew that I had their backs.” Following in the footsteps of last year’s starting keeper Erin
McCormick, who was very technically sound, Ngo has a more aggressive side to her game. She isn’t afraid to come out and challenge shooters or fight through a scrum to grab a loose ball. “I don’t really know what my style is,” Ngo confessed. “I just play with my instincts.” Ngo explained that initially, her biggest challenge was just getting over the process of second-guessing herself on the field. “My goalie coach, Gabe Wilson, we knew this was one of my weaknesses. She said that as you play more games you’ll get over it,” said Ngo. “And that’s what happened. We just kept playing and playing and I faced a lot of shots.”
Ngo said that in time she became more relaxed, confident and learned to rely on her instincts. Dauria added that hard work, coupled with one strong outing after another, helped Ngo win the trust of her teammates. And when Ngo’s confidence increased, so did the confidence of every girl around her. “I think she realized that her team needed her to play exceptional for us to be successful,” said Dauria. “And if that meant making 45 saves, then she made 45 saves. The girls realized that they could count on her and as a team, knowing that you have somebody playing behind you that you can count on, making the saves that she’s not only supposed to make but then a couple
crazy ones that no one expects her to. That just gives you more confidence.” Dauria said compliments on Ngo’s work in net ranged from the MSM soccer family to parents and coaches of opposing teams. Ngo, who lives in the Wheatfield area, had a few spot call ups to varsity in which she saw minutes in the field as a freshman and sophomore. But this year was her first foray into being a varsity goalie. Facing power house teams like Nichols, Sacred Heart and defending league champion Nardin on a daily basis, Ngo, who named All-Catholic first team, said she tried to view each game, each day as a learning experience.
Struggling in her first start against Nichols on Sept. 19, Ngo’s growth and confidence as a keeper was clearly evident in the Oct.14 rematch as she didn’t back down once and was clearly a force in the game. “The last Nichols game I was really down on myself because of how bad I thought I played,” she said. “So it was interesting seeing how things changed.” With her first season of varsity in the books, Sara Ngo is already looking forward to next season. “I’m looking forward to seeing what we have,” she said. “We’re gonna have some players coming back that aren’t injured so I’m excited to see them play again. I’m looking forward to training this winter and summer and getting better.”

End of the road for Belcher, Holler and THS girls soccer By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
Senior captains Melissa Holler and Chezney Belcher stood shoulder-to-shoulder through countless battles on the soccer field over the years as members of the Tonawanda Lady Warriors. It seemed only fitting that the two would be by each other’s side when the journey came to an end. The Tonawanda Lady Warriors saw their season come
to a close after a shocking 1-0 double overtime loss to Roy-Hart that was played Oct. 22 at Clinton H. Small Stadium. After one last team huddle, Holler and Belcher, both seniors, sat at midfield. Neither one wanted to walk off the field because they knew crossing the sideline would officially signal the end of their scholastic soccer days at Tonawanda High School. It was something neither was ready to face just yet. “I don’t even know how to explain it,” Belcher said with a brave smile as tears rolled down her cheeks. “I don’t even know. I can’t even think straight.” Belcher paused and took
a deep breath before she continued. Holler, meanwhile, was so upset all she could do was sit with her arms wrapped around her legs as she fought back the tears of a season that was not only over, but also cut short due to injury. “I feel like it was a good opportunity that I got to play with the girls that I got to play with,” Belcher said. “And to be on this field with such great supporters and fans. And (Holler) right here. I don’t know...It’s one of the best and worst feelings right now.” Coming off of a trip to the Section VI Class B title game last fall, this edition of the Lady Warriors had a lot to live up to. And this young
team lived up to expectations. They opened the season by taking the championship of the Danny Durick Memorial Tournament. Sophomore Haley Schoelerman was outstanding in net, while Hope Balling and Grace Stranahan established themselves as two of the most dangerous scoring threats in ECIC IV. Tonawanda, under first-year coach Angela Nicholas, beat defending Class C state champion Holland in an early meeting that set the tone for their run to the No. 1 ranking in the WNY small school poll. But before long, injuries crept in. Holler, the core of the defensive unit, went down with a torn ACL on
JEFFREY T. BARNES
Tonawanda’s Joceyln Lorenz played her final game for the Lady Warriors. Sept. 17. Dahnea Harrison also ended up on the DL with a concussion. By the time sectionals rolled around, Grace Stranahan and Gabby Krajewski were also on the
sidelines. Though they had a large roster, the loss of four key players was just too much to overcome. Balling, Schoelerman, Harrison, Stranahan, Pearl Bacon, Amy Farnham, and Sydney Kowsky will lead Tonawanda next season. Holler, Belcher, Alexis Lilly, Shelby Stone, Heather Farnham, Jesalyn Cala, Jocelyn Lorenz are seniors the Warriors will be saying goodbye to. “Well I was really close with all the seniors so it’s really hard losing then,” freshman Hope Balling said as she walked off the field. “They brought a lot of attributes to the team. We’re gonna miss them so much.”
Baron battles back from injury to land role with Bisons By Howard Henry CONTRIBUTOR
This is the second installment of a two-part series on WNY Baseball Hall of Famer and former Buffalo Bison Vic Baron. To read the whole story, visit www.communitypapersofwny.com/news/Vic_Baron. html. Sciatica in a 22-year-old. And nothing worked. Not the team doctor. Not the whirlpool. Not the chiropractor. But Baron kept working, not willing to sacrifice his spot in the starting lineup. By the end of the year he had played in 109 games. His home run total topped out at 13. His average fell to .294. The spring of 1962 saw the end of Baron’s professional career for a while. In spring training, the Phillies dis-
counted his power numbers, claiming they were due to the high mountain air. They said they would assign him to Class A Williamsport (Pennsylvania), but initially he would have to return to Bakersfield. Baron very reluctantly agreed, saying first he needed to go up to Pennsylvania to be able to drive his family out to the coast. When the Phillies would not concur, Baron reluctantly said ‘Goodbye’ to baseball. A young man with a young wife, a baby, and another on the way needs a job. Fortunately, older brother Martin had relocated to Buffalo and was able to help him land employment with Dupont. A steady job and a steady income were vital for the growing family (Justine would be born in 1962, Vic Jr. in 1963 and Kurt in 1964). Baron also found a vital outlet for his baseball needs in
the local semi-pro Municipal Leagues. Jack Phillips put Baron in touch with Buffalo super scout Cy Williams, who linked him to his son, Bobby, on the powerful Al Maroones. Two years in the Buffalo MUNY League was followed by 15 seasons with the Classic League Travelers, with a leave of absence in the last half of the 1966 season to spend with the Bisons. When Clay Dennis called, Baron took a leave of absence from his regular job (now with Allied Chemical) to keep the baseball dream alive. Himes did most of the catching after Aug. 1 but Baron was on hand to help out with doubleheaders and as needed, making his Buffalo debut on Aug. 13. He got into eight games, coaxed a walk, stole a base and collected one single in 13 official at-bats. The blow came off Columbus Jet hurler Jim Shellenback in
the fifth inning of a scoreless game in Columbus, setting up the Bisons’ only run. The Herd lost, 2-1, in the bottom of the ninth. Buffalo finished fifth in the International League in 1966 and Dennis encouraged Baron to come to spring training with the Reds in 1967, but Baron said to himself, “Bench is coming back, and where am I going to go?” Considering that he now had four children and had just purchased a house, the answer was easy: back to a steady job at Allied Chemical and back to the Travelers. Baron eventually hung up his hardball spikes at age 42 but followed this with 20 years of fast-pitch softball. He also took on the coaching reins for his sons in the Tonawanda Little League. Trying to put Jack Phillips’ coaching philosophy into practice, and with the help of
the Warnick brothers, Fred and Don, the Baron-led teams won five consecutive championships. Unsolicited, one of his former players volunteered how knowledgeable and how helpful Baron had been to his charges. This endeavor ended when his sons aged-out of the league, but another baseballrelated activity was waiting in the wings. Vic and others had long been talking of the need for a Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame. This organization came into being in 1997 with Baron as one of the original board members. He was honored with induction in 1998 with the following notation: “He was regarded as the most patient and greatest power-hitter in the [Cheektowaga Classic] league and was Player of the Year in 1972.” Baron retired from Allied Chemical in 2000 after 35
years. He keeps baseball memories, weights and workout equipment in the basement (“The Dugout”) of the home he bought in Tonawanda in 1966. At age 74, he retains a fit, athletic frame and he and Karen now occupy themselves with visits to family in Pennsylvania, bowling and following the activities of 11 grandchildren. Still, the dream of baseball and what was, and perhaps what might have been, never really dies. You can see it still in his posture and in his eyes when he talks about his feats on the diamond, flips through binders of baseball cards, or points modestly to some of the clippings on the walls of “the Dugout.” Vic Baron is a quiet man, a content man, a patient man, and a man who would probably tell you, all in all, he has had a powerfully good life.

A new and larger breast imaging center will be located within the 11-story clinical sciences center, currently under construction adjacent to the main Roswell Park hospital, but the need for these services was deemed too urgent to wait for the building’s completion. At RPCI, screening mammograms are batch read by WZR 53&, UDGLRORJLVWV 6WXGies show this method of batch reading lowers the rate of false positives, which means fewer women need to return for additional images. The breast imaging and diagnostic services now available to the general public include: •Mammography, both screening and diagnostic types •Advanced breast imaging such as ultrasound, breast MRI and digital mammography •Minimally invasive breast biopsy •Pathology analysis by pathologists who focus exclusively on breast cancer

Afternoon and evening appointments (3 to 6:20 p.m.) are reserved for women getting a screening mammogram, and free onsite parking is provided. Appointments take approximately 30 minutes, and women receive a personal phone call the following morning with their results. RPCI recommends that women at average risk should begin yearly mammograms at age 40. Personal risk factors such as family history of the disease may warrant screening beginning at an earlier age. Women should discuss their personal factors with their healthcare providers. Roberts of Good Morning America was diagnosed with the disease and brought her battle out in the public eye. In Robyn Roberts’s case, MDS was a result of being treated for breast cancer with chemotherapy. In Tracy’s case, doctors do not know how or why she got the disease. After several months of physical exams, blood transfusions and painful bone marrow tests, doctors determined that the only option for Zawistowski would be to undergo a stem-cell transplant. According to Patti Na-
poli, who is organizing the benefit, “Tracy has faced this battle with courage, grace and humor even through the toughest days. Her blood counts are recovering and she is getting stronger everyday but she still has a long road ahead of her. We (TEAM ZAWI) are hosting this benefit so that Tracy can concentrate on her recovery without the stress of the financial struggles she will face as a result of out-of-pocket medical expenses and the long term loss of income. The event will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Nov. 22,
2014 at the American Legion Post 264, 60 Main St., Tonawanda. Tickets are $25 pre-sale and $30 at the door and cover food, beer, pop and live music. Noco Raises More Than $22,000 For Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Throughout the month of September, NOCO, its customers, and employees, raised a total of $22,436 to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Western & Central New York Chapter. “After the success of last year’s month-long in-store fundraiser, which raised $12,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, we expanded our efforts,” said Michael Bradley, chief financial officer and senior vice president, NOCO. “In addition to our Express store campaign, our employees throughout our corporate offices and bulk plants also gave generously to support ongoing research and programs for members of our community affected by blood cancers.” The fundraising campaign kicked off at the beginning of September when NOCO employees were on hand at four NOCO Express locations to pump gas and wash windows for customers for a donation. Throughout the month, customers could also make a $1 donation at any of NOCO Express’ 37 locations to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In addition, NOCO employees at the company’s corporate offices and bulk plants also conducted dress down days and silent auctions

Ken-East band director in running for Grammy Award By: Lauren Kirchmyer It has been said that Kenmore East High School has one of the best music programs around, and the students and faculty of the school point to Phil Aguglia as the reason why. “I was one of those awkward kids who didn’t really fit into a lot of places,” Aguglia said. “I struggled a lot but it was through band that I found a place. It became part of who I was.” He started taking trumpet lessons, an instrument his dad played, in fifth grade at Southside Elementary School in Buffalo. During his sophomore year at Hutchinson Central Technical High School, his band director allowed him to work with and help other students. Seeing his peers succeed because of his help filled him with satisfaction. “No matter what my personal successes were, I felt more accomplished when people I worked with did well. That’s why I wanted to be a teacher,” Aguglia said. He went on to receive a bachelor’s in music education from Ithaca College and a master’s in music with a focus in education from SUNY Fredonia. He taught in Massachusetts, followed by West Valley, before making his back to Western New York to teach middle and high school band for Cleveland Hill Union Free School District in Cheektowaga. “He took a program that was in its infancy with very basic skills and turned them into a very respected band and music program in Western New York, all on his own,” said Joseph Greco, who started with Aguglia at Cleveland Hill around 1997 and currently is the assistant principal at Kenmore East High School. “He put in hours after school, weekends, working with kids for extremely
long hours.” And his ways haven’t changed. In 2002, Aguglia moved to Kenmore East. His workday starts at 7 a.m. and sometimes goes until 10 p.m. He is in charge of wind ensemble, concert band, three jazz bands, two jazz combos, several small chamber groups, individual lessons as well as pep band. He puts in around 70 hours each week. He will even work on weekends and during the summer to make sure his students are getting the best music education. “I run a different kind of program, it’s a little non-traditional,” he said. When students are not in class with Aguglia, they are allowed to go into his classroom and work on material including chords, scales and rhythms. “Great things happen when you allow this flexibility.” “The way he teaches things is indescribable,” said Isabelle Bertino, a senior at Kenmore West High School. “You’re not just learning something you have to memorize, he makes sure you can understand it, which is what a lot of teachers are not capable of doing.” Last year, the Recording Academy and the Grammy Founda-
tion introduced the Grammy Music Educator Award. It only takes one nomination to apply for the award. Aguglia received about 60 nomination emails, but he didn’t pursue. When the competition opened for 2015, Aguglia’s email was flooded with nominations once again and he decided to give it a chance. This year about 30,000 people were nominated for the award. Approximately 7,000 people followed the link in the email to fill out the application. From there, 222 music educators from around the country were selected for the quarterfinals. Aguglia is now one of only 25 people who remain in the competition. “It’s humbling,” Aguglia said. “I’ve won a lot of awards, but it doesn’t mean anything to me unless what’s happening in here, in the classroom, is working.” “He’s a big part of why Kenmore East is successful,” Greco added. “I don’t know anyone who works any harder. He’s extremely well deserving, and I know I speak for the entire school.” Aguglia made sure to include the entire school in his nomi-
nation process in return. When he found out he was one of 25 who remained in the competition, he had to film videos answering questions about why he was deserving of the award. Besides showing video clips and pictures of his students past and present, Aguglia shared in his videos how he brings in guest artists, allows his students to perform throughout Western New York and travel to places like Las Vegas and Disney World, recruits students through unique programs, proposes ideas to the school district to receive new instruments, and is involved with charitable and educational organizations such as Music is Art. He even had busloads of students collect instruments and volunteer in New Orleans, La. after Hurricane Katrina hit. “One thing that is important to me is that my students understand there is a bigger world out there,” Aguglia said. “It’s not about what just happens in this room. I say to them, ‘Leave a footprint bigger than your own so when you graduate there’s something they remember you by,’ and I’m never disappointed.” Should he win the Grammy Award, he would receive a $10,000 honorarium. Kenmore East’s Music Department would receive $6,000 through the Ford Drive 4 UR School program and a $10,000 grant, allowing Aguglia to start an artist in residence program at the school and let the students work with a mentor, a professional from the music industry. “The help we would get from the Grammy Awards wouldn’t just be used towards anything it’s for us, for the students, and Mr. A always puts his students before himself or anything else,” Bertino said. “I truly believe he deserves this award.”

They say adversity makes you stronger and CASPER has had a lot of adversity to deal with out on the street. He came running up to one of our volunteers when we were doing TNVR in Buffalo. It was like he was saying ‘take me, take me...’ and we did! He is mildly positive for FIV, is a real lover and has green eyes as big as his gentle heart... please consider adding him to your home. He is good with other kitties. CASPER qualifies for our “Special Kitties for Special People adoption promotion. If you would like more information, call Second Chance Sheltering Network at 652-6051.
