CPOWNY, Buffalo Zoo pair up Holiday fun to welcome giraffe calf at the library

Community Papers of Western New York has partnerded up with the Buffalo Zoo to welcome the newborn baby giraffe. Various avenues will be taken to announce the arrival of the calf. By Lizz Schumer
THE HAMBURG SUN EDITOR
There is a new face at The Buffalo Zoo, and Community Papers of WNY Inc. is partnering with the Zoo to welcome its first Zoo-born baby in some time: A baby giraffe. The male calf arrived in the middle of the night on Oct. 24, to firsttime parents A.J, 5, and Moke, 3. Community Papers of WNY has planned a year of events and promotions, in conjunction with the Zoo, to welcome the newest addition to Western New York. A formal press release
will be released by the Zoo and CPOWNY on Dec. 15, announcing the still-anonymous baby’s name, as well as the reasoning behind its new moniker. The newspaper group and the Zoo are working together to host a series of events and contests, to coincide with the calf’s first year of life, and CPOWNY readers will be the first to know, and participate in, these promotions. Baby giraffes tend to remain with their parents until they are around about 22 months old, so the organization has plenty of time to spend with the new little one. Special events will include a coloring contest, in which children in grades
K-4 color a drawing of the baby giraffe and mother from a drawing template included in all community papers. A winner will be selected from each of CPOWNY’s 25 community newspapers by random drawing and each winner will receive a family pass for the Buffalo Zoo; two parents and two children. Next will be a contest for winning a named, baby giraffe plush animal, for sharp-eyed readers. A series of eight billboards by Lamar of Buffalo are located throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area that feature the photo and name of the new Buffalo Zoo baby giraffe. The first family from
each of the 25 community papers to correctly submit all eight route and crossstreet billboard locations will receive the collectible baby giraffe. Outdoor billboards will be in place for six weeks, starting Dec. 15. According to CPOWNY Director of Marketing Dr. Janet Gane, the baby giraffe’s arrival will be heralded by a year-long calendar of events, distributed by the 25 papers, as well as WNY Health Magazine, with a article focused on conservation and preservation of the animals’ natural habitats.

Giraffe from Page 1 “There’s a real concern about poaching of giraffes, and other animals are also in danger, Gane explained, “So, we want to make sure our readers are aware of that, as well as the first to know about this precious little one. The Buffalo Zoo will be releasing its calendar for the year, including special events to celebrate the new baby giraffe’s arrival, and CPOWNY will also be sharing the calf’s milestones with its family of readers. “We’ll be a big part of this baby’s first year of life, Gane concluded, about the efforts. “He’s part of our family now, too. For more information about the Buffalo Zoo’s newest little one, keep an eye on The Sun [insert paper’s name, etc], and keep checking back for news, clues, events and promotions surrounding the latest addition to the Zoo’s, and community papers’, growing family.

Join storytime with Mrs. Claus at the Clarence Public Library Library from Page 1 Children (mostly 6 years of age or older) will make graham cracker houses with items provided by the museum. Younger children are welcome, but most be accompanied by an adult. Explore & More Children’s Museum was founded in 1994 in East Aurora. To learn more, visit www. exploreandmore.org/default.aspx. “[The children] get to be creative and have a lot of fun. Part of that is it’s a family thing,” said Monica Mooney, director of the Clarence Public Library. Members of the Clarence Youth Bureau will be present at that event to volunteer assistance, “Which is very helpful because it can be a messy program, but they keep it nice and neat,” Mooney said. Two sessions will be available that day; one will be held at 2 p.m. and one will be held at 3 p.m. “We like to do this event in December. It’s a nice holiday program,” she said. Due to limited space, registration is required for those sessions. To register, call the library at 741-2650. On Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 6:30 p.m., Mrs. Claus will be visiting the library for storytime with children of all ages. Local author and storyteller Lorna MacDonald Czarnota will dress as Mrs. Goody Claus and visit with attendees of the event for songs, activities and stories about Santa Claus and life at the North Pole. “This is the first time we’re having this program,” Mooney said. Registration is also required for this event, by calling the library at 7412650. Czarnota has been professionally telling stories since 1985, performing at schools, libraries, muse-

To learn more about Czarnota, visit her website at www.storyhavenstudio. com. “She does a variety of workshops and presentations,” Mooney said. The event at the library, she added, is “what I’m calling a bedtime storytime,” since this will be an evening event. Children that attend are encouraged to wear their pajamas; a bedtime snack will be presented, courtesy of the Friends of the Clarence Public Library. Clarence Youth Bureau will be there to help as well as orchestrate a Santathemed craft. The event “is for families and children of all ages,” Mooney said. The Clarence Public Library is located at 3 Town Place in Clarence. For more information, visit the Clarence tab at www.buffalolib.org.

Motions made at town board work session Town Board from Page 1
In regard to the Clarence Chamber of Commerce, he noted that the chamber recently announced the candidates for the 43rd Annual Awards Dinner, which will be held at Samuels Grand Manor on Thursday, Feb. 26. “Congratulations to Councilman Pat Casilio for being awarded the 2014 Lifetime Achiever of the Year. Pat is and has been very involved in quite a few charitable organizations in the town of Clarence, and I can think of no one more deserving of this award,” Hartzell said. Continuing on, he discussed that on Nov. 24, although there were delays, taxpayers voted “yes” to both referendum items, as presented by the Clarence Central School District for the Capital Project. “The increased Capital Project’s funding will allow the district to repair many of their older buildings and also allows for the renovation of the athletic facilities,” he said. Supervisor Dino Fudoli of Lancaster and Mary Holtz of Cheektowaga asked Hartzell to express gratitude for the assistance by the town of Clarence highway department dur-
ing the recent blizzard. “While other towns were waiting for Erie County’s emergency DLAN system to kick in, Clarence had both men and machines on the spot-digging our neighbors to the south,” Hartzell added. Wrapping up his report, Hartzell noted that two Clarence High School graduates, Scott and Matt Jarrett, are staff writers on the TV series NCIS. In other board matters: – A motion was made by Hartzell to approve the transfer of funds from the Youth Bureau budget. – Councilman Peter DiCostanzo made a motion for transferring a total of $500 in funds from the Clarence Planning Board’s budget. – Another motion was made by DiCostanzo to set a public hearing for Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7:45 p.m. to consider a local law amending the Code of the Town of Clarence, Chapter 131 - Landscape and Tree Conservation. – DiCostanzo also motioned a pursuant to Article 8 of the Environmental Conservation Law; the Clarence Town Board issued a negative declaration on the proposed State
Police, Erie County Sheriff and Town Court Facilities Project located at 1 Town Place in Clarence. After the board reviewed details of the project, including preliminary site plans and a completed Part 1, 2 and 3 Environmental Assessment Form, it is determined that the proposed action will not have a significant negative impact upon the environment. – A motion to enter and authorize Supervisor Hartzell to sign a Municipal Cooperation Agreement between the town of Clarence and the town of Lancaster for the shared use of the Clarence Assessor, was made by DiCostanzo. That motion signifies a one year term beginning January 1, 2015 and ending December 31, 2015. – A motion was made to appoint Emily Senay to the part-time position of Recreation Attendant at the rate of $10.28 per hour effective Dec. 6, and will be subject to receipt of all pre-employment paperwork and pre-employment requirements being met. The Clarence Town Hall is located at 1 Town Place in Clarence.

Aléthea’s Chocolates: a local sweet spot By Kathryn Luppi
THE SUN CORRESPONDENT
Alѐthea’s Chocolates is set in a mansion on Main Street in Williamsville that was converted to include a confection shop and old fashioned ice cream parlor. Open since 1985, it stocks a wide assortment of handmade chocolates and other sweets. There is a lot more to this sweets emporium than the shop and ice cream parlor. In the back of the building is a 8,000 sq. foot factory built in 1989 that produces and ships almost all of Alѐthea’s chocolates both nationally and internationally. Ninety percent of the company’s sales are from chocolates. Chocolate selections include sponge candy, butter toffee, nut clusters, rocky road, satin wafers, cherry cordials, pecan turtles, truffles with 40 different centers and chocolates in all shapes contained in different box sizes. To warm any Buffalo lover’s heart there are popular chocolate Buffalo novelty pops and minikins, sponge candy and marshmallow confections. Nonchocolate options include peanut brittle, old fashioned slab fudge and cashews. Dean Tasso, Alѐthea’s owner and chocolatier, said the chocolate at his shop is “unconditionally guaranteed fresh chocolate of the highest quality. I use the best possible chocolate and the best possible ingredients.” The health benefits of chocolate come from the pure cocoa and cocoa butter, he said. While the majority of the hard candies, licorice and jelly beans are import-
ed, the chocolates are made in their facility. “Chocolate is like beer: the fresher it is, the better it is,” said Tasso. “Two years ago, packaging was changed to reflect everything we have in terms of colors and flavors is natural, nothing is artificial.” When asked what it is like being a chocolatier, Tasso responded, “Sweet. The retail part is the easy, fun part. There is a lot of customer involvement and we have a very loyal client base. And now with our website (www. aletheas.com) we have a loyal client base all over the country, primarily for Christmas and birthdays. “The chocolate business is complex because we manufacture what we sell. The really hard work is in the manufacturing. It’s a detail business because you have to pay attention to the ingredients all of the time. The ingredients have to be right,” he added. A Buffalo chocolate institution, Alѐthea’s is a familyrun business that started as the Garden of Sweets in Buffalo. Tasso’s father, Gust, purchased that establishment in 1967, after selling his interests in another business, Paul’s Pies. Before Alѐthea’s moved to its present location in Clarence the Tassos ran shops on Bailey Avenue, in malls, and other locations in Western New York. The business name changed to Alѐthea’s Chocolates by the 1980s. It was named after Dean’s great grandmother Alѐthea who was known in Kozani, Greece for her homemade confections. “I’ve been very fortunate, I have a very loyal staff of

The current set up for the shop in Williamsville was inspired by a visit to Salzburg, Austria, Tasso said. “I went into a confectionary shop and I was amazed by the variety and quality and also by the presentation of a lovely sample to me in a little dish. Last year’s Clarence boys varsity basketball team had historic success. This year’s team will be starting from scratch after graduating five starting seniors. Clarence was league champion last year for the first time in 18 years. The Red Devils were co-champions with Williamsville North and Jamestown. They advanced to the section final game at Buffalo State College, where they lost to Jamestown. “It was our second year in a row to Buff State for the final four and our third time to Buff State in the last five years,” Clarence coach Todd Banaszak said. Losing five of last year’s seniors won’t be easy to recover from, but the fact that Clarence had enough depth and players who learned a lot last year gives Banaszak confidence. “Last year, we graduated five seniors and some guys off the bench, so it’s a whole new crew,” Banaszak said. “And we’re starting five seniors again this year, so they learned a lot and improved from one year to the next.” Among those seniors are captains Matt Sadowy and Kyle Stevens. Sadowy has been with the varsity team for two years, and he’s been the team’s leading scorer so far this year. He’s listed at 6’6, and he uses his size to his advantage. Stevens has already been the hero this season, scoring the game winner at the buzzer to beat North Tonawanda last Friday night (Dec. 5). David Cummiskey, Brian Pulli, and Hunter Harris complete the starting five. Both Sadowy and Stevens will be expected to step up as leaders this season and use what experience they have to set an example for the rest of the team.

Emaure Williams was a key scorer for Clarence last year. He’s one of five starters that graduated. Some of this year’s new players will be valuable this year and in the future as well, starting with sophomores Jake Ireland and Jake Randall. “Jake Ireland and Jake Randall are two sophomores that are up who are looking good,” Banaszak said. “Randall’s the backup point guard, and Ireland
comes off the bench.” Nick Kiener, Nick Zuffranieri, Anthony Oliveri, and Adam Southern are juniors on this year’s team. Banaszak is starting with smaller day-to-day goals before hopefully setting higher goals later in the season. “We’ll take it one game at a time,” he said. “It’s a new
cast, a new crew. We’re going to do the best we can and work hard in the gym every day. Our goal is to win each game, and then we’ll set some goals down the line for other stuff.”

to an end, the Sacred Heart varsity basketball team is looking to improve this year. “It was not one of our finest hours last year,” Sacred Heart coach Sister Maria Pares said. “We had a lot of new kids, and it took some time to get them mixed and everything.” Sister Pares already sees improvement in this year’s team. Despite their youth and lack of experience, she sees better team chemistry Danielle Hore Maura Tomm Grace Galvin Mary Rose Gaulin Hannah Floss Kathleen Ryan Maria Gabriele Micaele Ryan Desyre Lee Sarah Young
and a team that knows how to play together, even after one game. “This year’s team plays with each other,” she said. “We have less experience, but I really feel like this year’s team is starting to work together.” The team does have a few key players returning from last year’s team that Sister Pares expects to be leaders. Juniors Sarah Young and Kathleen Ryan bring valuable experience as well as athletic ability to this year’s team. In Sacred Heart’s first game of the season, a 38-37 win over Williamsville North on December 2, Young was named Most Valuable Player. Young had 15 points and 15 rebounds in the game.

Clarence girls hoops returns reigning team MVP, ECIC all-star By Melissa Brawdy SPORTS REPORTER
The Clarence girls varsity basketball team will look to improve on last year’s season through strong teamwork and aggressive defense. The Red Devils finished last season with a 9-11 record and lost five players to graduation, so this year won’t be easy. Among the five players lost were three of last year’s starters. Blair Budzinski was a four-year point guard, Kelsey Devine was a forward, and Lauren Moore was last year’s female athlete of the year. A few key players will return this year, however. Senior guard Gabbi Pacatte is a three-year starter. She was an ECIC and Division I all-star last season and the team MVP the past two years. She led the team in points, steals, and blocks last season. “Senior Gabbi Pacatte is a three-year starter and will be a solid leader on the floor,” Clarence coach Erin Booker said. Also returning this year are senior guard Maddie Storr, junior point guard Molly Barden, sophomore forward Anna Davies, and freshman center Carly Reynolds. Booker expects Barden and Reynolds to step up as key players this season as well. “I have high expectations for Molly Barden, who has had some strong performances in our scrimmages,” Booker said.
“Reynolds will make her presence known under the basket as well.” In addition to the players returning and bringing experience with them, Booker expects that a few new faces will have a positive impact on the team and be valuable as well. Lauren Perry, Kelsey Roberts, and Mikayla Barndt are all juniors. Perry and Roberts are guards, and Barndt is a forward. Sophomore guards Lauren Cullinan and Anna Meichenbaum, as well as freshman forward Ella Eckert, are also key new members of this year’s team. With this group, Booker has set goals that focus on the season as a whole as well as fundamentals. “Our goals are to improve our record, control the boards each game, let our
defense create opportunities for our offense, make smart passes, and avoid turnovers,” Booker said. The keys to making that happen aren’t anything too unexpected. “Playing as a team, communication on the floor, aggressive defense,” Booker said. This year’s team will be a combination of a few experienced players and a lot of new talent. According to Booker, it’s an unselfish team with “tremendous athletes” that already knows how to play the aggressive defense that it needs to be successful. The Red Devils played their first game Tuesday night (Dec. 9) against Williamsville East, and they’ll look to their teamwork and strong defense to carry them through the season.

2013-14 RECORD: 9-11 COACH’S OUTLOOK: “Despite a young team I expect to be competitive in a difficult division. We have some tremendous athletes that will make big plays, and some good height and experience under the basket this year. The entire team plays unselfish basketball and will give 110% effort each game. Their aggressive defense will create offensive opportunities. They have to stay focused and make smart decisions on the floor.”

Bryan Jost was one of Clarence’s captains last season. He and fellow captains Elliott Chase and Ryan Funk graduated, leaving behind a leadership void Clarence will look to fill this season. In order to achieve these goals, the team needs to improve. And in order for the team to improve, the boys on the team will need to work hard every day and learn to
play at the varsity level. “We need to get better every day,” Banaszak said. “We need to shoot the ball, we need to be aggressive, we need to be physical. They
need to learn to play at this speed and this physicality, which takes experience. And after graduating five seniors, these guys got to get used to it.”

Teamwork, communication, and aggressive defense are the keys to success for the Clarence girls varsity basketball team this year, according to coach Erin Booker. In the Red Devils’ game against Williamsville East on Tuesday night (Dec. 11), the teamwork and communication were present. But in a 45-42 loss to the Flames, the defense wasn’t quite as strong as it needed to be. And the Red Devils had trouble against the Flames’ defense, leading to a close game that unfortunately didn’t end in their favor. Clarence led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and 18-14 at halftime, but it couldn’t hold the lead through the end of the game.
Clarence was trailing by three as the third period came to a close, but Gabbi Pacatte scored a three-pointer right at the buzzer to tie the game at 32. But Clarence only managed 10 points in the fourth quarter, five of them coming from Anna Davies. Meanwhile, Williamsville East scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, including five unanswered points to end the game. Still, Booker liked a lot of what she saw from her team on Tuesday night. “We played a very aggressive game,” she said. “I was happy with my team’s aggressiveness, I was happy with our defense. I was happy with a lot of things we did on offense. Overall it was a great game.” Erica Martinsen played strong defense while also scoring 25 points for Williamsville East. “We had trouble with Martinsen. She’s a phenomenal player,” Booker said. “We just couldn’t get [the ball] past her. She’s the one that
really gave us fits.” Several Clarence girls played a strong game as well, among them Pacatte, Davies, and Molly Barden. “Gabbi Pacatte ended up with 15 points tonight and had a ton of steals, a ton of rebounds,” Booker said. “Molly Barden did a nice job handling the ball. Anna Davies did a great job underneath the basket too.” Davies came away with a few crucial rebounds in the fourth quarter that gave her team good scoring chances. She was also able to draw three free throws in the fourth quarter. She made all three as the Red Devils fought to come back and regain the lead they’d lost. But although they’d led by seven points twice during the game, it wasn’t enough for the Red Devils to pull out a win. Clarence’s next game is Friday (Dec. 12) against Kenmore East. The Red Devils will look to continue their strong teamwork and aggressive play and come away with a win.
Frontier drops Clarence JEFFREY T. BARNES
Chelsea Smith was one of just three Sacred Heart players to graduate from last year’s team. Also returning this year as key players are seniors Maria Gabriele and Julia Blujus. Blujus’ 2013-14 season was cut short by an injury, but she’ll start this year healthy and bring experience and leadership as well. Sister Pares also sees upside in many of the new players this year, including freshman Danielle Hore. The point guard contributed four points to Sacred Heart’s first win. The goals for this year are simple as the team looks to return to what it once was and the success it once had. And Sister Pares is confident that the team can accomplish those goals.
“[Our goals are] to get better, to work well together, to play hard,” Sister Pares said. “I think if everyone puts in their full measure, we should do pretty well. I have a lot of hope for this group.” Sister Pares already sees a team that works hard and works well together and feels that that needs to continue. And she is confident that it will. “They seem to work hard, they seem to know where they’re going, and they put the time in. It’s just a matter of them learning to play together.” Team improvement needs to start with the experienced
players and then be passed down to the rest of the team. “I think that making that happen means the kids that have the experience do their thing better than they did last year and then pass it on to the younger kids,” Sister Pares said. “And once we get our timing and start working with each other and get our feel for the kids on the court, we’ll be fine.” Sister Pares didn’t mention playoffs or championships as she kept this year’s team goals simple. But she has confidence and optimism for the season. “I think we’ll have a good year,” she said.

Clarence goalie Jack Niesyty made 21 saves, but the Red Devils hockey team fell to Frontier on Dec. 7, 3-1. Clarence is 0-1 in Fed action.

Buffalo Choral Arts Society to present a Garland of Song
PROVIDED BY BCAS
The Buffalo Choral Arts Society will present an annual holiday concert of music titled “Garland of Song” at Saint Mary’s Church on Dec. 13. Founded in 1966 by Robert F. Schulz, the Buffalo Choral Arts Society has been proving music to Western New York. Not only on a local level, the society has also performed internationally, in places such as Austria, Normandy, Ireland, Spain and Quebec City. Throughout the year, the group will perform various concerts in Buffalo and surrounding areas, including a holiday event. “We have been doing annual Christmas concerts going back at least 20 years,” said Kevin Phalen, in his fourth year as president of the society. the society since 1983. The Garland of Song concert will take place at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13 at Saint Mary’s Church in Swormville; this will be the third presentation of this concert in WNY. Ticket donation of $15 will be accepted at the door of the event. Due to “stipulations of the church, we would not bar anyone from entering the Catholic church,” if they didn’t have the money, according to Phalen. Of the 120 members of
the society, nearly all of them will be performing, that night. “We’re presenting a variety of Christmas music, some new compositions as well as some old standards,” he said. During the concert — which will last approximately an hour and 15 minutes — 12 pieces will be performed, including 1 full sonata, as well as a medley of five different songs. Phalen said he is excited to perform at the Amherst church. “This is the first year we’re going to be there. We were invited to perform there by a member of the

church,” he added. Traditionally, the Buffalo Choral Arts Society has performed at the Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawana, but due to renovation work the concerts had to be moved to another location. In the past four years, the society has performed at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Hamburg as well as Saint Joseph Cathedral in Buffalo. “We get all over Western New York,” he said with a laugh. Members of the group range in ages, with efforts from both young and old. “Our youngest members are seniors in high school. Some of our members have been with us for the full 49 years,” Phalen said. Why should local residents make their way to this holiday-themed music event? “It’s some really beautiful Christmas music that is dear to many people. We have two arrangements from Robert Shaw and Alice Parker,” Phalen said. “It’s a wonderful way to start the Christmas season, to be put in a beautiful mood, in a very beautiful setting. St. Mary’s is a very lovely church.” St. Mary’s Church is located at 6919 Transit Road in East Amherst. Donors and volunteers are being accepted.
