Winter came into Buffalo with a bang this year as South Buffalo and areas south and east of it were ransacked with multiple feet of snow within a twenty-four hour period that began Tuesday, Nov. 18, and continued at various rates for four days. While residents were warned of the snow system traveling into the region, the extent and duration of the system could not have been forecast. The words

“unprecedented” and “snow-locked” were common throughout the week, leaving residents stranded in their homes with whatever supplies they were savvy enough to stock up on.

While the winter was at its worst, this is typically where Buffalonians are at their best.

Janet Poydock had a perfect vantage point of the Abbott Road issues from her upper apartment home. As she watched the struggling vehicles on the third day of the storm, she noticed time and time again that the cars that

were trying to make it to the hospital up the road were stuck and then rescued by passersby.

“At one point an ambulance was stuck on Abbott Rd as it was heading to Lackawanna,” stated Poydock, who was confined to her home due to unmovable snow outside of her door, “Four teenage guys were walking by and immediately helped to push the ambulance out of the snow.”

SPINAL STENOSIS - NEW TREATMENTS • RELIEF WITHOUT DRUGS OR SURGERY WHAT IS SPINAL STENOSIS?

Other ambulances were met with similar assistance throughout Abbott Rd. Neighbors on side streets that hadn’t been plowed attempted to help other neighbors. Sean Kane checked on his neighbors and, realizing that a friend across the street was trapped at work leaving his wife and children home alone, Kane helped to snow blow his driveway, to the best that the storm would allow.

One young mom-inwaiting gave birth at the fire station at the corner of Abbott and Hollywood, with the assistance of firemen and a fortuitously stranded pediatric nurse.

In the Clinton Street area fire and police personnel joined forces to assist another soon-to-be-mom get from her side street to the main Clinton thoroughfare where an emergency vehicle was waiting to take her to the hospital for her infant’s delivery.

Gas stations were found to be empty when residents finally made their way to refill their red plastic containers for their snow blowers.

“A stranger gave me a lift to a gas station that had gas,” stated Dennis Turkasz, who had to halt snow removal efforts when the gas tank on his snow blower emptied, “He knew which stations still had gas and drove me down the main road.” Turkasz made the rest of the jaunt home on foot with his two filled containers, an a bag of canned food to be rationed the next few days.

Kowalick said she began partnering with Anderson’s last year, but before then, she was living in a new development and as new houses were being built each year, toy drives continued to get a little bigger.

“I’d go door-to-door dropping off flyers, and that was how it was for the first six years,” she said. From there, she has been able to make it bigger with the help of Anderson’s. Last year, the toy drive was able to donate about 700 toys, and different charities have been chosen.

“If it gets even bigger this year, that would be exciting,” Kowalick said. “I had been choosing a different charity each year, and last year was the first year I worked with WNY Heroes.

It was one of the first charities I was able to speak to the founder and CEO, Chris Krieger, and I was able to really learn about the families who were going to receive the gifts, and the children who would benefit.”

Kreiger, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq until he was wounded in combat, continues to work on behalf of other veterans in spite of continuing treatment for his own injuries, and U.S. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter presented him with a Purple Heart on Veterans Day 2011. Today, WNY Heroes, a non-profit organization, continues to help veterans re-adjust to civilian life and provides their families with a variety of resources to help those who have bravely served their country.

A 2011 Mount St. Mary Academy graduate and current Niagara University student recently spoke about her experiences with Anderson’s Frozen Custard’s holiday toy drive, from Nov. 1 until Dec. 8, which grew from a project she began in 2007 as a way to give back to the community and help ensure area children are able to celebrate Christmas with toys each holiday season.

For the second consecutive year, Michaela Kowalick and Anderson’s are partnering to collect donations of new toys for children 12 and under at six Anderson’s locations: Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst, Sheridan Drive in Kenmore, Main Street in Williamsville, Union Road in Cheektowaga, Delaware Avenue in North Buffalo and Transit Road in Lancaster. All proceeds from this year’s drive will go to WNY Heroes to help the families of veterans, both living and deceased, in Western New York, and each toy donor will receive a complimentary Anderson’s Dessert Dollar certificate.

“I was a freshman in high school when I started it, and it just was something I wanted to do,” Kowalick, who is now 21 and a senior at NU, commented Monday. “The holidays have always been a really special time in my family, and some of my fondest childhood memories are around Christmastime, so thinking of all the young children not having similar experiences as I did was one of those heartbreaking things.

When you actually talk to them and hear what they do on a day-to-day basis, this is just such a small thing we can do to help their organization, because they’re just an incredible group that is doing tenfold of the small event that we’re doing, and they’re so dedicated,” Sorrentino added. “There’s so much energy and drive to support the people in the community.”

Local women “Knit it Forward’ for Roswell on and how large to make a square, Wainwright loved the idea that the squares would be combined with others to make an afghan for a cancer patient.

“They’re great,” Wainwright said speaking of Roswell. “I don’t know what I would have done without that place.”

Wa i n w r i g h t l o s t t w o brothers, a sister, her mother and father to cancer and they were all young. Her sister was 57, her brothers were 61, her mom was 68 and her dad was 69.

Wainwright brought the idea back to Woodland Place and she explained what she saw at Roswell, and the ladies came together for the first time making five bags of squares.

The squares are then given to Embraceable Ewe Yarn Shop in Hamburg who sews them together for the final blanket. “[Our group] started off with the fact that I have cancer and all these ladies are good friends,” said Wainwright. “This is a big thing to them that they’re able to do things and help out.”

But it didn’t stop there for this group of ladies, who range in age from 60 to 96, they also made four

Embracing the opportunity to get together and sew, knit and crochet a group of women who reside in Woodland Place Apartments in Depew are keeping the yarn ball rolling for a good cause, more specifically the patients at Roswell Park Institute.

Sharing a common goal to do something worthwhile for others, for the last five years, about 15 residents of the Woodland Place have been meeting every Wednesday evening to knit afghan squares for Roswell.

This all started because of Cheryl Wainwright, 66, who lives at Woodland Place Apartments, who was diagnosed with cancer.

“One day I was waiting in the waiting room at Roswell and there was this table with a big basket full of yarn and needles, and it had a little thing in it that said ‘Knit it Forward,’” explained Wainwright.

Making a difference in Western New York. bags of shawls. From there the ideas skyrocketed. The women started making hats, scarves, girl and boy pillows, heart shaped pillows, doll pillows, teddy bears, and prayer shawls.

“When you’re making the shawls you pray,” explained Wainwright, which are either knitted or crocheted by the group. “Then we give them to the sick people, they put them on their shoulders, and just knowing

that somebody made it and prayed while making it. It is very special.”

Wainwright added one member of the group, Marie Buckley, was in the process of making smaller squares, but she never finished.

So, she gave the squares to Cheryl Weigel, and she made a pillow out of the squares.

Rose Nowack, a member of the group since it started, makes the teddy bears,

which takes nine pieces of fabric just to make the head.

“I loving sewing and helping children,” said Nowack.

Another member, Evelyn Hanes, who is 96 years old, wanted to do something special for the kids so she came up with the idea to make doll pillows, which she calls pajama dolls. She makes them herself and uses no pattern.

“I don’t want them to feel bad because most of the

kids lose their hair,” said Hanes. “So, I just made them pajama dolls. I wanted the kids to be able to love something. A lot of the kids like to put their arms around stuff that they can relate too.”

Both Nowack and Hanes said they “Knit it Forward” because they want to help people and kids, and at the end of the day they feel good that they accomplished that.

“They devote their time to come and do this and I think it’s unbelievably amazing,” said Wainwright. “I’m amazed. These women are so talented for their age.”

The Knit it Forward group also includes: Madeline Porto, Pat Horton, Kay Werner, Terry Davis, Mildred Welker, Florence Williams, Paulene Kane, Ceil Nowak, Rita Kenny, Terry Keifan, Cris Rizzuto, and Melody Simon.

The group is also seeking donations as everything they work with is donated.

Fabric, and yarn is always appreciated, but stuffing and children’s fabric is a need currently. If you would like to donate, call Wainwright at 675-6781.

The event is free and open to the public—anyone wishing to have a book signed is expected to purchase it from Talking Leaves, as an act of respect and support for the authors and the independent bookstore who is sponsoring their visit (in collaboration with the Canisius Contemporary Writers Series and the UB English Department’s Exhibit X Series).

Brock Clarke has made well-received visits to Buffalo for both Canisius and UB series in the past, in support of his short fiction and earlier novels. His new book, “The Happiest People in the World,” is a spy novel/ comedy of errors that brings international terror and conspiracy to a small Upstate

New York town – it is incredibly funny and unbearably sad in equal measure.

Clarke is the author of “Exley” and “An Arsonist’s Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England,” which was a national bestseller and has appeared in a dozen foreign editions and three other books. He lives in Portland, Maine, and teaches creative writing at Bowdoin College.

Novelist, blogger, nature writer and essayist Bill Roorbach has not, to our knowledge, previously read in Buffalo, but he has visited Talking Leaves and spent some time here, impressed enough that he is eager to share his work with us, in the company of fellow Maine resident Clarke. Christmas Tea at the Hull Family Home & Farmstead

The holiday season is quickly approaching and the Hull Family Home & Farmstead is getting into the holiday spirit this December.

On Sunday, Dec. 7, the annual Christmas Tea and Open House will be returning to the Hull Home for its third year. The tea will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will consist of a luncheon with various holiday treats. There will also be many different types of teas available for the attendees to enjoy.

“The idea came from some of our staff member’s love of going to tea rooms,” explained Jeanette Dickinson, a Hull H o m e v o l u n t e e r. “ We started with the Mother’s Day tea over five years ago and then decided to start a Christmas tea event to have something fun to do in the holiday season.”

Seating for this event is

limited so anyone interested in attending is encouraged to RSVP as soon as possible. Once the tables are filled, there will be a waiting list in case there are any cancellations.

The Hull Home will be decorated for the holidays and attendees will have the opportunity to tour the home either before or after the tea and luncheon. For those who have toured the house before, Dickinson believes that they will be pleased with the renovations and updates that the house has received so far.

“We have made many changes to the house that just look amazing. The pantry is finished and we’ve finished the plastering and painting.” Dickinson said. “Even if you’ve been to the house before, it is worth it to come through again to see all of the wonderful changes and renovations that have been made so far.”

Morton asks Lt. Gov. Duffy to support investigation into gas prices Erie County Legislator Ted Morton has contacted New York State Lt. Governor Robert Duffy asking for his support to appeal to the NYS Attorney General to do a full investigation into why gas prices in Erie County drop at a far slower rate than across New York State and the United States.

“Lt. Governor Duffy was recently asked by the media why he thought our gas prices were higher and slow to drop, and he said he wasn’t sure. I am hoping that he agrees with me how serious this matter is and that answers are critical for the residents of Erie

County. I have asked Lt. Governor Duffy to support my efforts and request a fair and comprehensive investigation, I would encourage him to contact the Attorney General as soon as possible to push for the investigation,” said Legislator Morton.

As a result of the investigation, Legislator Morton wants to see corrective action taken and county residents provided relief at the gas pump in a timely manner.

“This is just such a fun event. It is a nice way to spend some time with family and friends during this holiday season.” Dickinson added.

Jacobs issues reminders to WNY motorists Be prepared, stay safe during winter driving months Every start to the winter season, you promise yourself that this year will be different, that you’ll be ready for whatever blizzard Mother Nature sends us. We all know that winter driving can be a test for even expert drivers and you need to be prepared at all times. Before the storm hits, take a moment to review a few simple winter driving tips and doublecheck that you have the proper emergency gear in your vehicle to ensure your safety.

Not all drivers are prepared for winter driving conditions, so take it slow when driving on snowy or icy roadways. Drive as the environment warrants, stay alert and reduce your speed. Due to poor visibility and/or bad road condi-

tions, always leave plenty of room between cars.

Brake early and slowly give yourself time to stop and react safely.

Keep a full tank of gas along with dry gas in your vehicle at all times. Before pulling onto the road, be sure to completely clear snow and ice from your car windows, mirrors, lights, hood and roof. Don’t use cruise control in inclement weather as the slightest touch of your brakes to deactivate can cause loss of vehicle control.

Take extra precaution when entering and exiting ramps and bridges as they can be extremely slippery.

While four-wheel drive vehicles may help you get going quicker, they won’t help you stop any quicker – don’t get overconfident

Guitarist Jason Drabek is an asset to Performing Arts

Performing Arts, located at 5334 Transit Road in Depew, has recently accepted a new guitar instructor, Western New York native Jason Drabek.

Known to many as “Tall Jay,” standing at 6 feet 5 inches, will be running various clinics for Performing Arts, while teaching guitar to students of all ages and levels. Drabek studied with Buffalo Hall of Fame inductee Tony Scozzaro for six years, and has performed more than 600 shows for the masses with Buffalo jam band Sweatin’ Like Nixon, composing and recording three of their four records.

Most recently, he started performing with The Guilty Party throughout the area.

With all of Drabek’s performing history, and technical knowledge, joining the team at Performing Arts seems like the perfect fit.

The ‘hybrid’ facility is one part retail, one part music instruction, and one part creative outlet for youth in the area, and those young at heart. The space allows teachers sound proof practice spaces, as well as an area to “perform and gather in-house for recitals and instructional clinics,” said Sam Marabella, owner of Performing Arts.

Performing Arts Jason Drabek As a teacher, Drabek is a chameleon. He tries to get those light bulbs to go off, no matter how old his student is, or at what level they’re at with guitar. His teaching itinerary is constantly changing based on the student, learning as much from them as they are from him.

“It’s structured to a point, but there are a lot of ways to the same end on a guitar...some people have their own way, or they want to go their own way, you know.

But you don’t want people playing sloppy and having sloppy technique,” remarked Drabek.

An ability to approach a problem from multiple

angles, coupled with a lot of patience, helps Drabek bring his students into their own.

Clinics Drabek will be bringing to the table are guitar specific, one focusing on guitar effects pedals.

“Once a guitarist gets into playing, they’ll have a pedal board, where they have different effects pedals. And if you go online there’s thousands of pedals, thousands of choices. It’ll drive you crazy. It’s such a big, talked about thing,” said Drabek.

The pedal workshop helps alleviate some of that pressure to make the right choice, because it’s about experimenting with the effects specific to a genre,

and going from there. Drabek goes on to say that your sound is a part of your instrument, and a part of your style. The workshop gives you the chance to try out different pedals, the mainstream ones, and figure out which sound they like the most without having to pay for an entire effects package. Softball star Mariarz officially signs to play at Edinboro

Emily Maziarz was familiar with Edinboro University even before she began to consider continuing her softball career with the Fighting Scots.

But once she visited Edinboro, the decision was pretty easy.

Maziarz, Cleveland Hill High School’s allstate catcher, officially signed to play softball for the Fighting Scots on Nov. 13.

“I went for a visit and it was great,” she said.

“They have the program that I want to go there and after I went there I kind of fell in love. It’s the right distance; I love the girls on the team. It’s a small

campus, with small class sizes that I’m used to.

I just loved everything about it.”

Edinboro, a Division II school located in Northwest Pennsylvania, is about a two-hour drive from Cheektowaga. Last year ’s roster included seven players that graduated from Section VI high schools and more are headed down for the 2016 season.

“I went to some games last year and I was pretty impressed,” Maziarz said.

“And they’re bringing in some other kids from Buffalo so I’ll be around some kids I know.”

Edinboro went 17-24-1 overall last season and 12-15-1 in the Pennsylvania Scholastic Athletic Conference under Dan Gierlak, who has been the head coach since 1989 for every season except 1995.

The Scots’ 2014 year was vastly improved from the eight-win season in 2013.

As a junior, Maziarz was a fifth-team all-state selection as well a firstteam All-Western New York, All-ECIC IV and All-ECIC selection. She has played some third base and outfield but has been primarily a catcher at Cleveland Hill and that’s what she was recuited to do at Edinboro, where she will study prelaw and minor in criminal justice.

Maziarz was dynamite last season for the Eagles in her fourth varsity season. She hit .500 with 22 runs, 13 runs batted in and a home run. She batted .436 with 19 runs and 17 RBIs with three homers as a sophomore.

Over the last two seasons, Maziarz has thrown out seven of 11 would-be base stealers.

She has one more season left and she expects to go out in style.

“I want to make it a good last year,” she said.

Timon weathers frustration in come-from-behind semifinals win, championship game postponed

Charlie Comerford isn’t entirely sure why his Timon football team isn’t a first-half squad.

“I don’t know what it is.

We haven’t been a good firsthalf team all year. Maybe my speeches aren’t good enough before the game,” Comerford joked.

If his pregame speeches don’t get his club going, whatever he does at halftime certainly does — at least it did during the Tigers’ Monsignor Martin semifinal matchup against St. Joe’s on Thursday (Nov. 13).

Timon’s defense recovered from a first half in which it

allowed three touchdowns of more than 50 yards to hold the Marauders scoreless the rest of the way and the Tigers rallied out of a 21-6 hole to defeat St. Joe’s at Ralph Wilson Stadium, 26-21.

In winning, the Tigers didn’t just punch their ticket to the MMAA finals to play nationally ranked Canisius, which beat St. Francis in a 62-19 shellacking in the other semifinal game, but they also avenged a Week 9 defeat to Joe’s.

In that 44-26 loss, the Tigers turned the ball over seven times and were supplanted by the Marauders as the division’s No. 2 seed, which cost Timon a first-round bye.

Things began to play out similarly at The Ralph. Joe’s jumped out to a 7-0 lead when senior Myles Young took a handoff and dashed 70 yards for a touchdown.

“We turned it over seven times against them at Tifft two weeks ago,” Comerford said of the Tigers’ Oct. 31 loss. “It looked like the same stuff was going to happen again (Thursday), but the kids fought back.”

It was the kids on the defensive side of the ball and on special teams that did most of the second-half fighting, at least early on.

Timon’s defense forced three straight Joe’s punts to

open the third quarter and set the offense up with drives starting at St. Joe’s 2-, 35- and 25-yard lines. Still, the Tigers couldn’t turn the prime field position into points.

But like its defense, the offense had to fight.

“It was definitely frustrating,” Ringwood said of the team’s inability to score early in the second half. “But we just had to go out, we had to fight, we had to dig deep. We knew this wasn’t the end of it. We just had to keep going.”

And that’s exactly what they did. A Cade Kennedy interception set the Tigers up deep in Marauder territory for the fourth consecutive drive to open the second half and quarterback Brandon May took advantage, breaking free for a 15-yard touchdown rush as time expired in the third quarter. May found Derrick Simpson on the 2-point try and Timon pulled to within 21-20.

They weren’t done fighting just yet. Joe’s appeared to be in control when it crossed midfield for the first time of the second half early in the final quarter, but Ringwood recovered a fumble forced by Timon’s Desmond Stevens to give the Tigers the ball at their own 24 with four minutes left.

May found Ringwood for 26 yards on the first play of the drive, Arenzo Thomas broke off a 20-yard rush on the second, and Timon was in Joe’s territory with time to spare.

A few plays later, May scored again, this time from 5 yards out, for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown with 1:06 left.

May finished the game 12 for 22 for 207 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions and added 15 rushes for 84 yards and a pair of scores on the ground. Comerford commended the senior signal caller for his improvisational skills.

“He’s phenomenal,” he said.

“A lot of the plays you see aren’t called. It’s just Brandon doing his thing and throwing on the run. We lean on him and he’s one of the smartest players I’ve ever coached.”

Added Ringwood: “I couldn’t ask for a better quarterback. He puts the ball where it needs to be in clutch moments.”

Ringwood had a strong game himself, catching four balls for 77 yards. Arenzo Thomas had 14 rushes for 101 yards and a second-quarter touchdown. William Lamar caught May’s lone touchdown pass.

Defensively, Ringwood chipped in six tackles, including a clutch sack on Joe’s last-minute drive after the go-ahead score. Danny Price intercepted Archer in the end zone on the game’s final play.

The Tigers’ defense, after proving susceptible to the big play in the opening half, allowed just 120 yards over the final two quarters.

“The kids showed a lot of heart in the second half,” said Comerford, whose team will play in the title game for the second time in four years. “…

To beat a team like that here is phenomenal. [Joe’s coach Dennis Gilbert] is one of the best coaches in Western New York, if not the best. To beat a St. Joe’s team led by him with the character of his kids, I’m really proud of our kids.”

Timon was set to take on defending champion Canisius for the Monsignor Martin championship Nov. 20 at Ralph Wilson Stadium, but inclement weather in Western New York forced officials’ hands in postponing the game until Nov. 29 at All High Stadium.

“We kind of expected a little cover zero to take him out but we tried to do some things to spring him loose,” said Fatta.

“Ultimately it’s just him making plays. He’s a talented kid and he deserves all of the credit.”

Ciezki finished 5 for 12 for 177 yards and two touchdowns, while Jojo Ortiz had 11 total tackles and Robert Wilson came up with a big interception to negate a scoring opportunity in the third quarter for Cheektowaga (9-2).

The Warriors will participate in the New York State final four for the first time in school history next weekend at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester.

“The school is very fired up about it,” said Fatta.

“I’m sure they will be even more so on Monday.

It’s good for everyone involved and it’s a good thing for the school.”

The key moment of the game came in the closing seconds of the first half, as Batavia had three cracks at the end zone from the 1-inch line and couldn’t punch it in.

It was a precursor to the struggles inside the red zone that the Blue Devils faced all game long. They failed score inside the Cheektowaga 10-yard line on five of those occasions, including three turnovers.

“You can’t win a football game when you are stopped six times inside the red zone,” said Batavia head coach Brennan Briggs. “It’s great that

we get to the red zone six times, but you have to finish it off and I think turnovers were the name of the game for us. Once we got down in the red zone we turned it over quite a bit and it’s unfortunate that happened because our guys didn’t deserve to go out in that fashion.”

Zak Ciezki tossed two second half touchdowns to seal the win, one going to Hakiem Black on fourth down from the 14, and another 81-yard bomb to Gibson in the fourth quarter.

NOCO raises more than $22,000 for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Throughout the month of September, NOCO, its customers, and employees, raised a total of $22,436 to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Western & Central New York Chapter.

“After the success of last year’s month-long in-store fundraiser, which raised $12,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, we expanded our efforts,” said Michael Bradley, chief financial officer and senior vice president, NOCO. “In addition to our Express store campaign, our employees throughout our corporate offices and bulk plants also gave generously to support ongoing research and programs for members of our community affected by blood cancers.”

The fundraising campaign kicked off at the beginning of September when NOCO employees were on hand at four

BPO kids concerts a hit

On Sunday, Oct. 26 the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) performed the first of this season’s BPO kids concerts. Young witches, vampires, and goblins came to hear a concert of spooky music including selections from the movie Harry Potter. In conjunction with the concert, Twin Village Music hosted an Instrument Petting Zoo before the concert in the Kleinhans Music Hall Mary Seaton Room.

Hundreds of children had the opportunity to try out flutes, saxes, trumpets, trombones, violins, drums and many more musical instruments.

This interactive opportunity allowed the children to learn how each instrument works while their parents looked on.
