Mooney’s Sports Bar & Grill gives patrons a twist on neighborhood place By Jennifer Lysiak
THE LANCASTER SUN EDITOR
In every community there are always a few well-known restaurants, but what is it about them that makes them so alluring? For Mooney’s Sports Bar & Grill, 4628 Broadway, in Depew, this neighborhood joint has become a gathering place that offers great food at affordable prices, luring both nearby residents and the occasional traveler. A place known for its macaroni and cheese dish-
es, customers can try the original cheddar macaroni and cheese topped with Panko bread crumbs; bacon, cheeseburger mac and cheese; lobster mac and cheese; or fried bologna mac and cheese. There are a total of nine different styles to choose from. The original Mooney’s, located on Military Road in Kenmore, was where it all began for the restaurant and the claim to fame of macaroni and cheese grew. Mooney’s now has five locations in Depew, Lancaster, Tonawanda,
Kenmore, and Leroy. “The mac and cheese we started out with a small [selection] and we gradually added different mac and cheeses to the menu. People love them,” remarked co-owner of the Depew and Lancaster Mooney’s, John Dudziak. “We have a secret recipe and it’s all made to order with fresh ingredients.” That being said, patrons must understand these dishes will take time to prepare, but it certainly seems well worth the wait, as one Mooney’s patron

raved about his dish the next table over. Dudziak added customers can order a side or whole mac and cheese dish, however, a side maybe just enough to fill anyone up. “Our sides are enormous,” he said. “If you get a side you’re taking it
home. You can’t eat it all. It’s crazy.” Mooney’s is much more than a pub as it is a place with a cozy, welcoming environment for all ages. “It’s a sports bar with a twist,” said Dudziak, offering not only the traditional pub food such as wings, chicken fingers, deep fried
foods, but wraps, tacos, soups, salads, subs, burgers such as an A1 Burger, a stuffed pepper burger, and a PB&J bacon burger. The menu also offers children selections of their own.

Whether she wants to be a doctor, a lawyer, a reporter, a teacher, an accountant – every girl has the right to not only dream, but to learn how she can achieve her goal of whatever career she aspires to. The “I Can Be” Career Day event hosted Saturday, Nov. 8 by Girl Scouts of Western New York will help girls do just that. Approximately 30 female volunteers will lead sessions on various industries including health care, education, engineering, journalism, law, social work, finance and more. Girls who register will submit their top career paths prior to the event and, based on their preferences, will be put into workshops. Girls will have the chance to go to four different workshops lasting approximately 40 minutes to learn about different career paths. In each workshop, girls will receive an introduction from the female leader. They’ll be able to participate in a handson activity that relates to the specific field, and then time will be available for a question-and-answer session.

Girls who participate will receive a patch. “We are honored that professional women volunteers will share their career journeys and conduct interactive modules with our girls, to inspire and educate them on how to make an informed choice about their future careers. Girls demand activities that are experience based. They want to learn by doing, even when it relates to emotional issues that they can share with other girls, according to the Girl Scout Research Institute,” said Cindy L. Odom, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Western New York. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 at Villa Maria College in Buffalo. The cost is $10 for registered Girl Scouts. Girls who are not yet registered may participate in this event by paying the $15 Girl Scout of the USA registration fee and the $10 program fee. Mooney’s Sports Bar & Grill: Good food, good times Mooney’s from Page 1
The Depew location was Dudziak’s first time taking on the ownership of a restaurant, but when Dudziak and his business partner, Kevin McFall, came together they turned a run down, dilapidated building into something special. The building was in foreclosure and then went to public auction, they decided to take a chance, revitalize the building, and bring some life back into it, said Dudziak, or as Dudziak said they like to call it, “Moon-i-fied it.” “The place was bad. We gutted it and took everything out,” said Dudziak, adding that the restaurant opened in March of 2013. “We always try to seek buildings that are in need of repair.” It was the same thing with the location in Lancaster, which opened in May of 2014, and the other locations as well. “This adds something to this neighborhood,” remarked Dudziak. “We turned an eyesore into something that people like to come to, I think.” The exterior of M o o n e y ’s p r o v i d e s a warm log cabin look and figurines of The Blues

The inside is filled with all sorts of memorabilia and some really unique features such as seats from the old Aud as a back wall centerpiece for the bar and a huge 1939 scoreboard. There are six large flat screen TVs making it a perfect place to watch a Buffalo Bills or a Sabres game. “We wanted to put some Buffalo nostalgia in it,” said Dudziak. “This place has been a tavern to my knowledge for 50 years and it’s been all kind of

names. It’s been a part of this neighborhood forever. It’s gone through different changes and we just wanted to bring something different to the area.” “We didn’t know what to expect, he added. “We didn’t know if we were just going to be a shot in a beer joint, or if the food would take off. We opened up around Lent and people were very gracious and very supportive.” To add to the Depew Mooney’s, Dudziak said they purchased the building next door for parking and it also gave them the
opportunity to offer customers a banquet hall for any special events. The hall is a bit on the smaller size, allowing up to 50 people, but it could make a great venue for a small bridal or baby shower or special celebration. Dudziak, who is a lawyer and many of us may know as the Lancaster Town attorney and prosecutor, said he always has been interested in the restaurant industry. Bartending in college and after law school, he enjoyed being around people, however, the food aspect of it is a completely different story than bartending. “I had no idea what I was in for,” said Dudziak. “It was really kind of like baptism by fire. I thought it was completely different. It’s not easy, but it’s been a good education.” Customers should also know that Mooney’s also offers a “Moses Challenge,” which more than 100 people have tried, but only two individuals and Thor, an English mastiff, have been able to accomplish to date. If you can finish a 6-pound version of Mooney’s famous Moses Sub in 45 minutes with no help, your picture and

Senior Sugg enters rivalry tilt with Lancaster prepared
By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
Josh Sugg has always appreciated the DepewLancaster football rivalry. “As a kid, I used to go to all of the games,” the Depew senior said. “It was a big part of my life.” Sugg’s favorite annual tradition in the week leading up to the game was watching the Depew Wildcat mascot tackle the Lancaster mascot at the pep rally. Until this year, when Sugg is a two-way lineman and captain for Depew getting ready to do the hitting on the field Friday night.
“As a senior now, this game means a lot,” Sugg said. “Being on the field, actually going through the plays, the hitting, the blocking, that’s what I’ve always wanted.” Sugg has been Depew’s starting right guard the past two seasons and is starting at left defensive end this year. “Josh has been extremely productive on both sides of the ball,” Depew coach Brian Wilson said. “He’s been a captain and he’s been a good leader for us. Not an overly vocal kid, but he’s a very hardworking kid and he leads by example. He’s the kind of kid you love having on your football team.” The 6-foot, 250-pound Sugg holds a black belt in tae-kwon doe and is able to use his hands well in winning matchups with
opposing lineman, Wilson said. “He’s got a great motor and he knows how to use his techniques,” Wilson said. Sugg earned a nomination earlier this season for the Trench Trophy, given annually to Western New York’s top lineman. “He’s probably the strongest kid on our line,” Depew quarterback Dylan Sekuterski said. “We run behind him a lot and he’s got really quick feet for a player his size.” Even though Depew won a sectional championship and advanced to the state semifinals last season, Sugg said the Wildcats regular season loss to Lancaster lingers in his memory. “Losing to Lancaster last year hurt a lot, it really did,” Sugg said. “That’s a game we always want to win.”

Janca, OP provide too much firepower for Lancaster By Mike Petro SPORTS REPORTER
Dillon Janca has come to appreciate the playmakers around him on the Orchard Park football team. The sophomore quarterback may have been the one to put up the huge statistics in a Week 6 win but it was the many weapons around him that helped make the performance. Janca finished with 317 yards and six touchdown
passes in the Quakers’ 53-28 win over Lancaster in the Class AA South tilt on senior night in Orchard Park. He hit five different receivers for scores and was a few yards away from throwing a touchdown to a sixth different receiver in the fourth quarter. “I just got the ball to our playmakers and let them make plays,” said Janca, who also overcame throwing four interceptions. “That’s what they do best. We have a lot of guys who can do that. There are some plays that I made bad throws on but I’ll remember and learn from those. It’s great having all of those guys and know that I can trust them.”
Lancaster fought hard throughout the game, but Orchard Park’s big-play capabilities and firepower were too much. The Redskins overcame an early-game 14-0 deficit to tie things up but gave up 20 unanswered points and trailed, 34-14, at halftime. Redskins’ junior quarterback Dan Speyer finished with four touchdowns, throwing two and rushing for the others on short runs. He finished 20 for 43 passing for 234 yards and was intercepted three times. On the first touchdown pass, Speyer hit Jake Valley for 38 yards, and with the second of four JJ Pesany extra points, the game was
tied at 14 apiece midway through the second quarter. With 5 minutes left in the third quarter, Speyer connected with Dan Emerson on an 8-yard score, which brought the Redskins to within 34-20. Lancaster would cut Orchard Park’s lead to 40-28 in the final minute of the third quarter, but couldn’t get any closer. “Orchard Park is a talented team, so we can’t make mistakes and give them more opportunities,” said Lancaster head coach Chris Dickson, whose team will make the playoffs as the fourth seed from AA South. “I did like how we came back and fought but then it
did get away from us just before halftime,” he added. “But the kids are really gritty and I like the way we play. We just made too many mistakes tonight and couldn’t finish in the end.” Janca reached 20 touchdown passes in just his sixth game as Orchard Park’s starting signal caller, but threw three first-half interceptions and another one in the second half. Lancaster interceptions were recorded by Tyler Lis, Evan Licata, Joe Biniaszewski and Michael Scarpello. “We came out quick and started out strong the first couple of drives but faced some adversity throughout the game and I think we
answered pretty well,” Janca said. Orchard Park linebacker Ronnie Shul recorded two sacks, while Matt Perla and Ryan Paolini added interceptions. Tundo noted the solid play of defensive backs Kage Janes and Josh Stahl, as well. While Lancaster takes on its rival Depew in Week 7, the unbeaten Quakers enter a Class AA South clash at defending Section VI champion Jamestown next week with the division title on the line in the regular season finale. Tundo expects yet another classic matchup from two of Western New York’s historically strongest large schools.
