St. Mary’s High School holds ceremony for new additions By Jennifer Lysiak

THE LANCASTER SUN EDITOR

Nearly 100 people were in attendance at St. Mary’s High School on Monday for the blessing and dedication of the new additions to the school, as well as the installation of the St. Mary’s Board of Trustees and School Officers. Presiding over the ceremony was Bishop Richard Malone, Bishop of Buffalo, who blessed the new St. Francis of Assisi Peace Garden, Marian Conference Center, St. Mary’s Student / Alumni Art Gallery, Icon Hallway, and the Advancement and Enroll-

Bishop Richard Malone, Bishop of Buffalo, and St. Mary’s High School student, Hannah Gresham, spoke at the blessing and dedication of the school’s new additions.

ment Department Offices. “We are charged by the Lord Jesus to go and make a difference in the world by the way we live our Christian lives and that of course is one of the fundamental reasons why St. Mary’s High School and all of Catholic schools exist,” said Bishop Malone during the ceremony. “So, I take the opportunity to thank all of you who are a part of the community of St. Mary’s as we celebrate today another step forward in the life and service of this wonderful high school.” Bishop Malone added that last spring he spoke at St. Mary’s graduation ceremony and it was inspiring for him to seen so many students graduating and

the number of awards that were given to the students. “Most heartening to me is when I find these young people around the Diocese,” said Bishop Malone. “I see them at mass, I see them going above good works, and I know that St. Mary’s has done what it needs to do to show why we’re here in the first place to serve the Lord and help human kind grow.” The additions were funded through a grant from the Galasso Foundation, which was founded by 1939 St. Mary’s graduate August Galasso. In fact the St. Francis Peace Garden is dedicated to Marty Galasso’s, the son of August. St. Mary’s High School President Mark Tramont said August formed the foundation, which supports a number of different Catholic organizations throughout Western New York, as well as many other endeavors. A majority of the trustees are residents of Lancaster and the board examines different areas to donate money to. Some projects include capital improvement of schools and buildings, or monies are dedicated to other activities. The peace garden will allow students and faculty members to use it as a meeting space, students will have privileges so they are able to come during their free time to enjoy the garden, and it will serve as a outdoor class-

room. “It really is a functioning outdoor classroom and it’s protected,” joked Tramont. “The kids would have to jump over the wall to get out.” But all kidding aside, Tramont said it is a very safe environment and it is a place students can go to, “take a break in the day, collect their thoughts, and it will help us too as a school. It gives us a little bit of an area to bring families into that are considering St. Mary’s.” The art gallery, which used to be a hallway lined with unused lockers, now will enable students to display their works of arts. “We have a great art program and one of the problems is that we didn’t have a place to display the art that the kids were producing and we have some tremendously talented artists,” added Tramont. Another hallway serves as the Icon Wall where religious icons, generally a flat panel painting, are displayed. The icons are an Eastern European tradition and Tramont said they are working with a couple of individuals to write icons. Further changes include renovating another area for the school’s offices for enrollment, advancement, and alumni.

Bad Luck returns to Buffalo coming in terms of people being part of our music, singing along, dancing and being into the music,” Fox said. “We encourage people to come.” Bad Luck is signed to Tragic Hero Records and just released a 40-minute documentary online of the recording process for their CD, “Cold Bones.” “My friend Austin from New York is a very good videographer and documented our process of being in Cleveland, going in to record our first album,” Fox said. “We like stuff like that, visual stuff. I think we’re going to do it each time we record.” To learn more about Bad Luck, their tour or their music, visit www.facebook.com/badluckmusic.

By Lauren Kirchmyer THE SUN REPORTER

Broadway Joe’s is about to be hit with some “Bad Luck” as the band makes their way to Buffalo from Daytona Beach, Fla. on Oct. 28 to open for Old Again and Let It Happen. The rock band consists of brothers Dom and Joe Fox and their friends Evan Blaine and Jake Kneer, and they’ll all excited to return to Buffalo. Their first visit took place this past July, when the band performed at the same venue for about 15 to 20 fans. “Some of the kids sang along and the place itself was sweet. We’re happy to be back, especially as soon as we are,” Dom Fox said. “Had not being in Buffalo before we had no expectations,” Fox continued. A friend who lives in town brought the band to the waterfront, showed them the military boats at the harbor and bubbles that are blown out of a window on Elmwood Avenue. “It was one of our favorite places to go, we had a lot of fun. St. Mary’s Board of Trustees installed New from Page 1

This section was once a garage, then an industrial arts classroom, and lastly a dance room, which has been relocated to the stage area of the school. The new conference rooms will be teleconference capable, which is based on a couple of things they are doing with some of the local colleges, explained Tramont. “We are in the process of signing a memo of understanding with Bonaventure, which will give us a lot secondary help. It will give our kids a chance to look at what college life is like and what colleges are looking for in students,” he said. Tramont added these

groups of projects have been put in place over the last few months and have been inspired by a number of folks associated with the school who want to make St. Mary’s an even better school for students. “We are trying to make sure that the students that come here have the best four years of their lives as high school students and learn to make the correct decisions the rest of their lives,” said Tramont. In addition, Bishop Malone blessed the members of the St. Mary’s Board of Trustees and installed Tramont as the school’s first president and Kevin Kelleher as the school’s first vice presi-

dent. The 2014-2015 trustees include: Nicholas Fiume, chairperson; Rev. Leon Biernat, Jay Brinker, Paul Elwell, Evelyn Hamilton, Jane Kney, Bernadette Lorigo, Matthew McDonald, Deacon Michael McKeating, Joseph Moreno, Thomas Oddo, Michael Rybak, Vincent Sorrentino, Michael Stegmeier, and Matthew Walter. Morton asks for investigation into gas prices Erie County Legislator Ted Morton sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Schneiderman requesting that he fully investigate the reason(s) why gas prices in Erie County drop at a far slower rate than across New York State and the United States. As a result of the investigation, Legislator Morton wants to see corrective action taken and county residents provided relief at the gas pump in a timely manner. “I am calling on the

New York State Attorney General to investigate the current gasoline prices in Erie County, relative to the rest of New York State and the United States. Every time there is a prolonged decline in oil and gasoline prices on the world commodity markets, the rest of NYS and the country benefit far quicker than the consumers in Erie County,” said Legislator Morton. “Based on current prices in the commodity markets, regular gasoline prices

should be 40 to 50 cents less per gallon than they are today. For many families this is $20 to $40 a week extra in gasoline costs, compared to most of the rest of New York and the United States. For the vast majority of Erie County residents, these savings are significant,” he added. Legislator Morton’s letter concludes with a request fair and comprehensive investigation into this matter.

Bowmansville Haunted Hayride is handicap accessible By Amy Robb

THE LANCASTER SUN REPORTER

Bowmansville Volunteer Fire Association will be hosting a haunted hayride from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday Oct. 25. Stop by the Bowmansville Fire Department at 36 Main St. in Bowmansville for some tasty donuts and cider, or hot chocolate, to ease the chill from those creepy ghouls on your ride. Costumes are encouraged, to really get into the spirit. Bowmansville has been putting on the Halloween event for the past four years, with the exception of 2012. As Western New York’s only handicapped and wheelchair accessible haunted hayride, the Bowmansville Fire Department is happy

to accommodate all those brave enough to venture along the ride’s path. “Ramps are constructed, and when wagons are pulled around, they back up to the ramp which brings them up to the surface,” said Brian Koch, a member of the Bowmansville Volunteer Fire Association. According to Koch, having an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) friendly haunted hayride was a natural fit for the association, since the parents of two handicapped brothers are members as well. In everything they do, the association keeps the boys in mind, and by extension all other ADA people. He added that just by being a volunteer firefighter, they’re trained to find solutions to

said Koch, referring to the sometimes bumpy ride often associated with haunted hayrides. The pathways behind the fire department are smooth and on level ground, but Koch added there are straps on the sides of the wagon to secure the wheelchair if need be, stressing that it’s often on a case-by-case basis. The wagons move very slowly as it is through the woods that it will not be an issue. All of the scenery and actors will be on the same side of the path, so that people won’t have to turn or crane their necks to see what’s happening on the other side of the wagon, making it easier for everyone to enjoy the ride. The deliberate pace of the ride sets the stage for actors

problems, and overcoming logistical obstacles is simply something they’re used to. “The haunted house that used to accompany the hayride was built specifically with wheelchairs in mind, so that those coming through won’t get wheels stuck around corners, and if there is a caregiver pushing the wheelchair, they can maneuver easily too,” explained Koch. “We’ve had a large response from the area. We’ve even had people travel over an hour to come to it,” added Koch, about the hayride. The wagons themselves are modified too, with more space to accommodate wheelchairs, “without any need for people to be taken out of their comfort zone,”

Ice Pavillion houses sled hockey for first time By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Sled hockey made its debut at the Depew Ice Pavilion over the weekend with the inaugural Saints Hockey Club Sled Classic. The rink is now believed to be one of just four fully sled-accessible facilities in the Northeast after recent renovations. The $13,000 project leveled the bench areas with the playing surface so players can stay in their sleds while getting on and off the ice. The white boards on the benches were also replaced with plexiglass. Renovations were funded by money repaid to the Saints Hockey Club by a former treasurer convicted of embezzlement. Sled hockey follows most of the rules of standard ice hockey with some modifications for players with disabilities. Athletes sit on sleds with two skate blades underneath and maneuver around the ice using shortened sticks with metal picks on one end. Paralympic gold medalist and Lancaster native Adam Page pushed for the renovations at the Depew Ice Pavilion since

becoming a member of the Saints Hockey Club board. The Saints Hockey Club Sled Classic drew seven teams from New York, Ontario, Pennsylvania and New York for the three-day event. Community members were also given the opportunity to try out sled hockey during a break in the games. “It’s awesome for the Depew Ice Pavilion to host this tournament,” Deputy Mayor Jules said. “Welcoming these incredible athletes and people from all over to attend the games and visit our village.” Page helped his Buffalo Sabres Sled Hockey Team win the championship on Sunday. He scored the game-winner in overtime of Saturday’s semifinal. “It’s awesome to have another rink that is suited for sled hockey. It’s great exposure for the sport,” Page said. “Hopefully disabled people that are out in the community come out and see the sport and maybe join.” Page, 22, won a gold medal with the U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey team last year in Sochi, Russia and is on the roster the U.S. team that will play in the sled hockey world championships from April 24 to May 2 at HarborCenter.

Depew soccer dominant in postseason win at JFK By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Ashley Rackley celebrated her 15th birthday by leading the Depew girls soccer team to a sectional playoff victory. Rackley, the Wildcats’ sophomore leading scorer, netted a hat trick by halftime Monday as Depew won 7-1 at JFK in a Section VI Class B prequarterfinal.

“I’m going to tell her to have a birthday more often,” Depew coach Larry Jones quipped. Senior captain Caitlin Augustyn had two goals and two assists as Depew (3-13) won its first game in over a month. The No. 17 seed Wildcats advanced to face No. 1 seed City Honors at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Johnnie B. Wiley Stadium in Buffalo. Results weren’t available at press time.

Depew’s move up to ECIC III this season hurt its sectional seeding, but prepared the team for the postseason, Jones said. “We have been in division four, where JFK plays, for a number of years,” Jones said. “There are a number of good teams in division four, but in division three, it is a lot of A schools who are ranked. It’s tough competition, tough to get wins. ...

“This was an opportunity to play an opponent similar to us. And that’s about as well as we can play. We moved the ball better than I’ve ever seen.” Depew scored in the first 30 seconds of the game, and led 5-0 by halftime. Senior defenders Morgan Grosch and Alyssa Klaffka scored in the second half for the Wildcats. “We all talked and we passed

very well and kept our heads up,” Grosch said. “We all supported each other.” Ally Oswian scored the lone goal for JFK (2-11) Depew goalkeeper Allison Torsey, a junior who is on track in June, made six saves. Rackley now has eight goals and 18 points on the season. “She has done so much for us this season,” Grosch said. “She’s great at passing and she’s

our only lefty on the team.” Added Jones, “We’re looking for great things for her her in the future.” For her part, Rackley relished the opportunity to extend her sophomore season and keep playing with this group of seniors. “The seniors have made it a great experience,” Rackley said. “I always had something to look forward to after practice.”

Wildcats victorious in 87th battle with Lancaster By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

If given the choice, would the Depew football team rather win a division title, or its rivalry game with Lancaster? “Oh,” senior captain Josh Sugg hollered Friday night, “beat Lancaster!” Having lost out on the Class B Central division title by a touchdown, the Wildcats held on for a more meaningful 13-7 victory in the 87th Lancaster-Depew battle before an overflow crowd on a muddy Foyle-Kling Field “Winning this game is something I am going to remember for the rest of my life,” said Depew quarterback Dylan Sekuterski, who passed for 94 yards and rushed for 85. Junior running back Matt Poblocki rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns as Depew (6-1) gained confidence and momentum heading into the Class B playoffs. Even with senior running back Nick Perrine sidelined by a hamstring injury and further injuries along the offensive line, Depew was able to rack up 235 yards on the ground against the bigger Lancaster front. “The offensive line played its best game of the year,” Sekuterski said. The game saw three touchdowns scored in the first 18 minutes before it became a defensive struggle. Neither team advanced into the red zone for the remainder of the night. Lancaster (3-4) came quite close in the final minute. After recovering a fumbled punt snap at the Depew 42 with 34 seconds remaining, Lancaster got down to the 20 when sophomore receiver LG Castillo took a crossing pass from junior quarterback Dan Speyer and weaved his way to

the sideline. Lancaster spiked the ball once and then took three shots at the end zone in the final 13 seconds. Two passes slipped through Castillo’s hands. “It just wasn’t in the cards for us,” Lancaster coach Chris Dickson said. The closest Lancaster had gotten before that was the Depew 31 on a 38-yard reception by senior Dan Emerson. But Emerson was stripped by Depew defender Josh Wojcik on the next play. Depew led 13-6 at halftime, driving for two early touchdowns, but missed a point after try and a 37-yard field goal attempt that would have extended its lead. Poblocki scored his second touchdown from 1 yard out midway through the second quarter to give Depew a 7-point lead. A defensive holding penalty in the end zone preceded the scoring play. Lancaster punted on its first three possessions before senior Justin Hersey broke off a 62-yard touchdown run one minute into the second quarter. Depew blocked the extra point to preserve its 7-6 lead. Poblocki put Depew ahead five minutes into the game, busting through tacklers around midfield on his way to a 62-yard touchdown run up the right sideline. Speyer was 16 of 27 passing for 161 yards and two interceptions. Hersey rushed for 86 yards in relief of senior captain Ryan Ritter. “I thought our defense played great,” Wilson said. “We just battled all night.” Lancaster will play at Kenmore West at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Class AA playoffs. Depew finished in a threeway tie with Cheektowaga and Maryvale atop the Class B Central standings, but finished second in the division due to

The Wildcats left Lancaster knowing they will be the sixth seed in the Class B playoffs, but not yet knowing their opponent. “We won, now we’re done here,” an emotional Sugg said. “Time to move on, and look forward to the future.” ••• As part of the Great American Rivalry Series, the United State Marine Corp made a scholarship presentation to one player from each team. An alumnus from each school

was also inducted into the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame. Lancaster’s scholarship winner was Emerson, a three-year varsity letterman who starts at tight end and defensive end. Emerson is a member of the basketball team and the National Honor Society, an officer in the Math Honor Society, and treasurer of the Student Athlete Activities club. He plans to major in defense and strategic studies at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Wojcik was Depew’s scholarship winner. The senior two-way end is also a member

of Depew’s lacrosse and track teams and the Varsity “D” Club. He plans to major in mechanical and aerospace engineering at RIT. Leonard Olesky, a fullback and linebacker for Depew from 1957-60, and Carl Kuras, a Lancaster halfback from 196264, were inducted the Hall of Fame inductees. Olesky led a rushing attack that totaled 405 yards in Lancaster’s 1960 win. He was an ECIC all-star and a firstteam all-Western New York selection. Kuras scored a touchdown in

the 1964 game and went on to become the football coach and athletic director at Cleveland Hill. He is a founding member of the Trench Trophy Award. ••• Prior to the game, Lancaster’s captains presented a $250 check to Donovan Metz toward the refurbishing of the basketball courts at Keysa Park in honor of his older brother James Metz, who died in a small plane crash Sept. 27. James Metz was a freshman at Lancaster who participated on the junior varsity swim team as an eighth-grader.

Close to You: The music of the Carpenters comes to Lancaster THE LANCASTER SUN REPORTER

Fans of the musical group The Carpenters will be in for a special treat this November. Musical group Close to You will be performing its show dedicated to The Carpenters called “Close to You: The Music of the Carpenters.” There will be two shows held at the Lancaster Opera House Saturday, Nov. 1 and Sunday, Nov. 2. This is the first time that Close to You will be performing at the opera house and the performances will be its New York debut.

Bandleader Lisa Rock expressed her excitement about being able to bring her musical group’s passion for The Carpenters to the Western New York area. “I have always loved the music of The Carpenters,” Rock said. “I wrote a show about them years ago, but I wanted to make the show more accessible to the audience. I think that this new show will be a great time for the audience and a great way to keep the amazing music alive.” Rock and her fellow band mates have been performing together for the past five years. of the songs will be performed in their original keys to keep them as close to the way that The Carpenters performed them as possible. Hearing many of these well-known songs will have the audience singing along with the performers, something, Rock said, that makes the Close to You show so unique. “One of things that people enjoy is that they hear songs that they know and can sing along to,” Rock explained. “This music reaches all age ranges because people can relate to the songs and they know the words. We also try to build a rapport with the audience and let them enjoy this unique experience to the fullest.” In addition to the songs that will be performed, Rock and her band mates will also be giving anecdotes about the Carpenters, Karen and Richard.
