St. Mary’s, St. Bonaventure’s form partnership By Sallie Moppert

THE LANCASTER SUN REPORTER

Two local Western New York institutions have recently joined forces to help give students more opportunities for college. On Wednesday, Oct. 22, St. Mary’s High School and St. Bonaventure University signed a Memorandum of Understanding during a signing ceremony in the new Marian Conference Center at St. Mary’s High School in Lancaster. Mark Tramont, president of St. Mary’s High School, and Sister Margaret Carney, president of St. Bonaventure University, signed the memorandum

and a few members of the students and staff attended the ceremony. “We are very excited to be teaming with St. Bonaventure,” Tramont said. “We believe that our students and faculty will greatly benefit from all that St. Bonaventure has to offer. We know that St. Bonaventure will be gaining quality students when our seniors enroll there.” The memorandum between the two institutions will include several opportunities for faculty and students. Several scholarship opportunities will be available at St. Bonaventure for St. Mary’s students who enroll in the university, including the prestigious

The yearly visit will include a campus tour and a presentation by staff members and faculty. Representatives from the university will also visit St. Mary’s approximately three times per year to display information about the school for the students to see. St. Bonaventure will also be working with the faculty and staff at St. Mary’s to provide professional development.

Dear Voters, Service. Home in Cheektowaga following a lifetime defending our country and constitution, I seek to become Town Justice to continue serving my community. Long before entering this race, I had offered to serve Cheektowaga pro bono as judge during former Judge Delano’s absence. From a working class family, I was blessed to graduate from the University of Notre Dame (Magna Cum Laude) and ND Law School. I’ve worked every type of case imaginable: felonies (homicides, child molestations, rapes, domestic violence, drugs, high-value larcenies), misdemeanors, and violation-level offenses (base housing issues, traffic offenses, etc.) – winning over 95% of my cases, trial and appeal. Additionally, I’ve cultivated Legal Aid and Civil/Contract/Labor/ Admin Law expertise. Most critically, during my 30+ year legal career, I already possess EXPERIENCE AS A JUDGE. UNLIKE the OTHER CANDIDATES, I belong to NO political party and have accepted NO contributions (especially NOT from lawyers, law firms, the police, or others who could participate in court cases before a judge they helped elect) because politics, outside special interests, and “payback favors” have NO PLACE in a court of law. LEARN MORE at www.JoeForJustice.com. My goal is not only to dispense the highest quality justice possible, but also to engage and improve our community (e.g., I plan to lead legal town hall meetings and preventative youth outreach efforts). Selection of your judge should NEVER be about political party membership, outside special interests, large campaign war chests that increase advertising volume, or “payback favors;” it should ONLY be about who has the best professional qualifications and judicial temperament to dispense JUSTICE over the citizenry. If you’re inspired by the unmatched professional qualifications/experience I will bring to the bench, my servant’s heart, and purity of justice I will deliver to ALL Cheektowagans, please honor me with your vote on November 4th. In word and deed, I will always demonstrate the Air Force core values by which I’ve lived my entire career: Integrity first; Service before self; Excellence in all (I) do. Respectfully,

“We are very excited to have this opportunity,” Carney added. “We are really looking forward to the wonderful opportunities that this will give both of our institutions.” Tramont echoed Carney’s sentiments on the new opportunities that this Memorandum provides both institutions. “As a college-preparatory institution, we at St. Mary’s felt that establishing relationships with area Catholic colleges and universities was needed to

Bloomsbury Lane Toy Shoppe to celebrate fifth annual ‘Neighborhood Toy Store Day’ As a child, there’s nothing quite as exciting as a trip to the neighborhood toy store. Gazing with wonder at the aisles of exciting choices, holding your new toy for the very first time, and anticipating the moment when you finally take your new gifts home. On Saturday, Nov. 8, B l o o m s b u r y L a n e To y Shoppe, will join hundreds of locally owned stores across the country to celebrate the fifth annual Neighborhood Toy Store Day, coordinated by the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association (ASTRA) to help families discover the joy of shopping at their local, independently-owned toy store this holiday season and beyond. “When you shop at an independent toy store, you are entering a universe of play possibilities,” explained Kathleen McHugh, president of the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association (ASTRA). “Neighborhood Toy Store Day is about celebrating the role the local store plays in the community. We are highlighting the expertise your local store has in selecting just the right innovative, exclusive and engaging toy to help your child grow and learn through play.” As part of the festivities, Bloomsbury Lane Toy Shoppe, will offer on this special day 20 percent off your entire purchase. unwrapped toy for children ages 0 through 18 for the Lancaster Youth Bureau. There will be raffles and toy giveaways every half hour through out the day. Hot Diggity Dogs will be provided as well as hot chocolate at the adjoining cafe, Mimi’s Central Perk… just, to put you in the right mood. Join in on the fun and help celebrate in the importance of your Neighborhood Toy Store Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. Independent toy stores can even help you find top toys for the children on your list this holiday season with help from ASTRA’s 2014 Best Toys for Kids list. Selected by a pool of 100s of local and independent toy retailers from across the country, this year’s list honors the new and improved toys that promote open-ended or creative play and incorporate innovative design features. Mike and Tracy Diegelman, owners of Bloomsbury Lane Toy Shoppe, ex-

plained, “With our expert understanding of how kids play, ASTRA members have created a list of toys that deliver the highest value, inviting imaginative discovery and encouraging creative thinking.” ASTRA retailers from all over the country will kick off the holiday season by hosting Neighborhood Toy Store Day to celebrate their community, the shop local message, and the joy of play. The event delivers focused messaging to consumers on the value local businesses have in the community and for ASTRA retail members (that’s us) that come together to showcase their expertise and the important role they play in the community. And consumers can be confident that more of the dollars spent in local, independently-owned stores, stay in the community—25 percent more in contrast with national chains, according to the 3/50 Project. Resident business owners pour

more money and energy back into the community in the form of everything from tax dollars to charity donations to participating in local initiatives through civic associations and area chambers of commerce. McHugh urged shoppers to take this opportunity to be part of a celebration of community and to get to know their neighborhood toy store on Neighborhood Toy Store Day. “By shopping locally, consumers will find great toys while supporting vibrant communities and sustainable economic development,” she said. “ Vi s i t y o u r n e i g h b o rhood toy store and you may bring home more than just the perfect gift, you’ll share the spirit of the season.” For more information, visit www.yourneighborhoodtoystore.org or to contact Tracy Diegelman email: Tracydiegelman@ yahoo.com or call 6840821. The toy shoppe is located at 1 W. Main St., in Lancaster.

Weights and Measures director served with subpoena Erie County’s Director of Weights and Measures, Edwin Gonsiorek, has been served with a subpoena by Chairman John Mills, making him legally obligated to testify before the Erie County Legislature’s Finance and Management Committee. Failure to appear would result in further legal action to compel his appearance. “I used my authority as chairman of the Legislature to issue a subpoena for Mr. Gonsiorek’s testimony relevant to the comptroller’s investigation of the Weights and Measures Division. The findings of the investigation included evidence of wrongdoing by the division, including the inappropriate issuance of fines on local businesses,” said Chairman Mills. “These are serious offenses. We don’t know at this point how long the Weights and Measures Division was harming local businesses or to what extent. In addition, he used county property for personal use, instructing his employees to work on his

personal vehicle during work time. Mr. Gonsiorek is legally required to respond, and I urge him to cooperate to resolve this matter.” According to the Erie County Charter, the Chairman of the Legislature has the authority to issue the subpoena in order to: “make such studies and investigations as it deems to be in the best interest of the county, and in connection therewith to obtain professional and technical advice, appoint temporary advisory boards of citizens, subpoena witnesses, administer oaths and require the productions of books, papers, and other evidence deemed necessary or material to the study or inquiry.” The subpoena was hand delivered by an assistant clerk of the Legislature on Wednesday, Oct. 29, to Gonsiorek’s county office. The subpoena requires him to appear at the Finance and Management Committee at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in the Legislative Chambers, 92 Franklin St., Fourth Floor,

Buffalo. Gonsiorek was provided several opportunities to appear before the Legislature to answer questions about the investigation and his conduct, and has failed to do so. As a result, the Chairman of the Legislature used his authority to subpoena due to the high importance of the issue. Chaired by Legislator Joseph Lorigo, the committee is prepared to question Gonsiorek on the findings of the investigation, which includes: • Inspectors fining stores based on field inspections never conducted by the department • Falsely reporting phony results of these inspections to New York State • Gonsiorek used of the Division of Weights and Measures garage to store his privately owned vehicle • Gonsiorek directed county employees to work on his personal vehicle during government work hours.

The Barking Lounge offers overnight dog care By Mary Mazur

NT SUN CORRESPONDENT

All dog owners have been through it, the daunting dilemma of what to do with your dog when you have to travel. Airfare for dogs is expensive and finding someone to watch them can be challenging, because dogs unlike other household pets are very high maintenance. David and Brendalee Vanini have opened up a new business in Tonawanda that could be the solution to your problem if you are thinking about taking a

trip. The Barking Lounge is the only day and overnight care facility of its kind in the Western New York area. “My wife and I are big dog fans and this is something we have been wanting to do a long time. Our dog passed away a couple of years ago and we have been talking about this for 10 years and finally we said enough is enough lets do this,” said David Vanini. The Vanini’s are the owners of several dogs. One of who, named Jacques, slightly resem-

ECC honored as one of the nation’s best colleges for vets

Erie Community College is known as a Western New York leader in providing support and career-focused education for returning U.S. serviceman. But thanks to recent accolades in a servicemen-focused national publication, the college will enter 2015 recognized as one of the country’s best colleges for veterans. Military Times – an independent news and information organization dedicated to service members and their families; and comprised of the Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times – recently ranked ECC seventh overall (and tops in New York State) among the country’s best career and technical colleges in its annual “Best for Vets” issue, determined by a highly respected, nearly 110-question analysis of a college’s efforts to provide veterans an environment for success. ECC’s devoted Veterans Affairs offices (at each campus), affordability and staff support for the college’s over 550 student vets earned high marks from the organization, but also validated the college’s veteran commitment at a national level. “This is not only another example of how ECC is gaining national recognition for its

education, but another instance in which hard work pays off,” ECC President Jack Quinn said. “Our college’s Veterans Affairs staff has worked tirelessly to give our returning servicemen the support, education and the career opportunities they deserve, and we look forward to continuing this dedication to our U.S. veterans for years to come.” Regularly recognized as the best college for vets in the Buffalo-Niagara region, ECC has also earned national recognition for its veteran efforts in such publications as Military Advanced Education Magazine, NJCAA Review and previously with Military Times EDGE Magazine. With a supportive community, classroom-to-career opportunities and Veterans Affairs coordinators helping over 500 student veterans every year, ECC has positioned itself to provide the best educational, retraining and counseling support for Western New York’s servicemen and women. These attributes – combined with affordable tuition, accessible financial aid, veteran-specific educational assistance, and more than 100 degree and certificate programs – continue to earn the college both local and national acclaim as a top choice for student veterans. Legislators request additional information from library director Erie County Legislators Joseph Lorigo and Edward Rath sent a letter to Buffalo and Erie County Public Library Director Mary Jean Jakubowski requesting additional information pertaining to an audit by the comptroller’s office that showed nearly half a

million dollars was spent lobbying for a special library tax district. The Erie County Legi s l a t u r e ’s C o m m u n i t y Enrichment Committee discussed the Audit of the Buffalo & EC Public Library for the Period Jan. 2011 to Dec. 2013

at its Oct. 23 meeting. As a result, several serious questions were raised and additional information has been requested to further look into the matter. Jakubowski agreed during the committee meeting to provide all requested information. “I still have many con-

Current statistics show that as many as half the women who should be receiving an annual mammogram are not getting this important cancer screening. “We are pleased to be able to offer our technology and expertise for breast cancer detection to all women,â€? says Ermelinda Bonaccio, MD, director of breast imaging at RPCI. “Cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment are our specialty. Applying our capabilities to breast cancer screening is an important part of our mission.â€? Mammography is the only screening test that’s proven to reduce a woman’s risk of dying from the disease. cerns surrounding this wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars. I’m also unhappy with the conduct of the library director and her dealings with a lobbyist. Ms. Jakubowski knew that a special taxing district was unlikely to come to fruition, yet continued to spend taxpayer dollars on her effort. The audit also revealed very questionable political activity. I would like to review the information that has been requested in order to fully vet the issue, said Majority Leader Joseph Lorigo, who is a member of the Community Enrichment Committee. In the letter sent to Jakubowski on Oct. 27, the Legislators requested the following information be submitted by Nov. 4: • All email communications between the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library and Communications Services since the inception of the working agreement between the two parties in 2011 until present; and • Level of Library Foundation money spent on the

We believe that this cost is extremely excessive, primarily because they were asked to complete a relatively routine task. Taxing districts have been set up for sewers, lighting, etc. throughout the county. Hiring an out-of-town law firm for this purpose, at this price tag is very alarming. We will continue our review of this issue by studying the

bills and what outcomes were generated for this contract, said Legislator Rath. At the Legislature’s request, the comptroller’s office conducted the audit, which reviewed a threeyear period. The findings revealed how much money was spent by the library in its efforts to push for the creation of a special library taxing district. The audit reported that expenses were more than $422,777, comprised of consulting fees and personal expenses paid to an Albany lobbyist, as well as legal fees to an Albany law firm. The money for these lobbyists and lawyers came directly from the library’s taxpayer funded operating budget. Prior to its completion, the library was made aware that the county executive, legislature and other elected officials critical to the process did not support the creation of a special taxing district. However, the library director and board of trustees continued to push their agenda and incurred these exorbitant costs.

Buffalo Blue and Gold Day helps Buchholz family By Sallie Moppert

THE LANCASTER SUN REPORTER

Buffalo is often referred to as the city of good neighbors. On Saturday, Oct. 25, the members of the Depew and Lancaster communities demonstrated why Buffalo has earned such a great title. Members of the community came out to Magruder’s Pub in Depew to support the Buffalo Blue and Gold Day fundraiser that was being held in honor of Bryce Buchholz. Fourteen-year-old Bryce was killed tragically in May of 2012 when he was struck by a drunk driver while riding his bike with some friends. To honor his memory, the Buchholz family has been working to build a BMX/ Skate Park in Lancaster. While the community has helped the Bryce Buchholz Fund to raise more than $275,000 for the first phase of the park, which is completed, more money is still needed to help bring the park to completion. To help offset some of the cost of the construction, the Buffalo Blue and Gold group was looking to join in the fundraising efforts. “We wanted to find a way to help the Buchholz family in their goal to put together a bike park in Bryce’s honor,” Buffalo Blue and Gold Member Ron Toczek explained. “Every little bit counts.” The fundraiser at Magruder’s had a lot of fun activities for community members to enjoy. There was a basket raffle with several items and gift cards to win, a 50/50 raffle and a raffle to win a jersey from Buffalo Sabre Marcus Foligno. Buffalo Tom was sampling and selling his famous Gourmet Hot Sauce. Scott Flick

The Buffalo Blue and Gold group help raise money for the Bryce Buchholz Foundation. of Flickatures was also present, selling many of the works of art of famous sports stars and more that he had hand drawn. The fundraiser also received a special appearance by Buffalo Sabres Alumni Andrew Peters. The fundraiser attendees had a lot of fun meeting and spending time with the former Sabre and the Buffalo Blue and Gold members got a chance to thank Peters for his help in spreading the word about the fundraiser. Peters had mentioned the fundraiser during the past week while on the radio on the daily show, Sabres Hockey Hotline, on WGR 550. Ted Morton, Erie County legislator, was also at the event. He helped to sell raffle tickets and other items at the front table. The fundraiser ended up raising more than $1,300 for the Bryce Buchholz Fund. “This event came together better than we thought,” Toczek added. “We’re hoping that we can do this event next year to continue to help out the Buchholz

family.” The Bryce Buchholz Fund will have a few more events before 2014 comes to an end. The Third Annual Bryce Buchholz Memorial Christmas party will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Lancaster Country Club. Tickets for the event are $65 and include dinner, drinks and more. A bowling tournament is being planned for Feb. of 2015, as well as the Ride for Bryce in May. Donations can be made at any First Niagara Bank with checks made payable to the Bryce Buchholz Fund. Checks can also be mailed to P.O. Box 132 in Tonawanda, NY 14151. Donations can also be made online via PayPal. To donate or for more information, visit www. flyhighridefreebryce.com.

Sekuterski has sights set on Depew passing record By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

When Dylan Sekuterski stepped in at quarterback for an injured Anthony Buono last fall, Depew c o a c h B r i a n Wi l s o n wasn’t sure what to expect. Buono was on pace to set many of the Wildcats passing records, while Sekuterski was a promising junior starting in the defensive secondary and known more for his athletic ability than his passing prowess.

Wilson decided to see what Sekuterski could do on his second snap, splitting four receivers out wide and sending them all on vertical routes. Sekuterski completed a 35-yard pass to classmate Nick Perrine. “And we never looked back from there,” Wilson recalled this week. Sekuterski set a school record with 1,071 passing yards in his junior season, leading the Wildcats to a sectional title and their first trip to the state semifinals. Now, having passed for a record 1,128 yards through the first eight games of his senior season, Sekuterski entered Wednesday night’s game

against Riverside needing 89 yards to pass Aaron Ertel for the all-time passing record (results weren’t available at press time). Ertel passed for 2,388 yards in 25 games, while Sekuterski sat on 2,299 yards after 18 games. Sekuterski has also rushed for 502 yards and three touchdowns this season. “He is such a competitor that there are times when he can be impatient and leave the pocket early,” Wilson said. “But when he does those things, good things tend to happen. “And this year, I thought he was seeing the field and being very secure in his reads.” Sekuterski entered his

final high school football game with a 14-5 record as a starting quarterback. “He’s the type of guy who will throw the team onto his back when he has to,” Wilson said. “Last year, when Buono went down, Dylan became the drive of our team, the heart. He moved us forward,” senior lineman Josh Sugg said. “This year, Dylan kept that drive, kept us moving forward, pushing to make the extra block, or the extra tackle.” Wilson said Sekuterski could have an opportunity to play quarterback in college, but may wind up playing defensive back, or choose to focus on baseball.

Cheektowaga defeats Depew in Section VI quarterfinals By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

One might have expected a much larger celebration for the Cheektowaga High School football team on Friday night (Oct. 24).After all, the Warriors had snapped a run of firstround misery and eliminated defending Section VI Class B champion Depew with an impressive 41-24 victory. And while the scoreboard on the South side of the field was certainly cause for cheers, the real buzz came from cell phone checks. And even more excitement came from the news that

the Warriors will get a chance to atone for a lopsided Week 7 loss. It will be Cheektowaga vs. Maryvale again next weekend. The third-seeded Warriors owned the second half on Friday night in front of a packed house. The Flyers, coming off a 35-6 win at Cheektowaga a week earlier, won 7-0 at East Aurora. “We want Maryvale next week,” said Cheektowaga fullback Dreqon Trotter, who had two sacks on defense and a rushing touchdown on offense. “They took our pride away last week so I want them bad.” Cheektowaga will get a chance to atone a Week 7 disaster against rival Maryvale as the Flyers visit the Warriors for the second time in three weeks. The Maroon Madness Rivalry

had been all Cheektowaga for more than a decade but Maryvale snapped a 12-game losing streak to the Warriors in style in Week 7. A week from now, nobody will care about the first meeting. In fact, Cheektowaga was past it long ago. “When they came in on Monday, we didn’t even watch the film,” Cheektowaga coach Mike Fatta said. “What we did instead was we made a highlight film for them and showed them the plays we’ve made during the year. We said, ‘This is who we are. I don’t know who that was last Friday, but this is who we are.’” And a second win this season against Depew didn’t come easy. But the Warriors defense, which gave up nearly 500 yards against Maryvale, came up

big against the Wildcats again when it mattered most. The Warriors held high-powered Depew off the scoreboard for the game’s last 21 minutes and Cheektowaga scored the last 20 points of the contest. “The second half we just had to turn it up,” said Cheektowaga running back Marshawn Gibson, who had 146 yards and a touchdown. “They really couldn’t stop offense so we just kept grinding and pounding. And the defense came up big for us in the second half.” Tyler Anna’s 29-yard field goal gave Depew a 24-21 lead after the first drive of the second half, but it was all Warriors from there. Cheektowaga regained the lead on Gibson’s 4-yard TD run and extended the edge on Zak Ciezki’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Davion

Stallworth early in the fourth. Naheem Shah sealed the deal with a 42-yard interception return for the game’s final score. Ciezki finished with 145 yards passing and two touchdowns and 94 more yards on the ground. Jerell Rolling had four of Cheektowaga’s nine sacks. Ty Lawson had a touchdown rushing and receiving in the first half for the Warriors. For Depew, Dylan Sekuterski threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns and added 68 yards and another score on the ground. Anna had an 86yard touchdown reception on offense and two interceptions on defense to go with his field goal. The Wildcats (6-2), who reached the state semifinals a year ago, were hit hard by injuries all season long. Standout

receiver Bobby Burns missed the game, while star fullback and linebacker Nick Perrine was severely limited by an injury first suffered in Week 3. Cheektowaga (6-2) had lost playoff home games in each of the last three years, including first-round upsets in 2012 and 2013. But that’s all a thing of the past now for the Warriors – as is Week 7. It’s all about getting back to Ralph Wilson Stadium for the first time since the 2009 championship season. One more win against a rival will net that – and the revenge Cheektowaga desperately covets against Maryvale (7-1). “That’s who the kids wanted and that’s who they’re getting,” Fatta said after learning the Maryvale game had ended, “so we’ll see how it goes.”

County executive fails to participate in first meeting of road advisory board The first meeting of the newly formed Erie County Bridge and Road Infrastructure Advisory Board (ECBRIAB) met Tuesday to discuss the future of Erie County roads. Appointed county legislators and town officials from throughout Erie County addressed the crumbling infrastructure and how elected officials can work together to address what is a high priority among Erie County taxpayers. The county executive was given an appointment on the ECBRIAB board, and though asked to participate multiple times, refused to make his appointment. “We have a group of bipartisan elected officials who took time out of their day to work together to create a maintenance plan for our county roads. No person is more important to this conversation than the county executive. I’m disappointed he refused to participate in today’s meeting,” said Legislator Joseph Lorigo. “Executive Poloncarz is critical to this conversation because he controls the Department of Public Works and what roads that department fixes. Everyone needs to work together to solve this problem, but if the county ex-

Members of the Erie County Bridge and Road Infrastructure Advisory Board ecutive refuses to participate, we have a great group of officials that have stepped up to the plate. I certainly hope the county executive will choose to play an active role going forward,” concluded Legislator Lorigo. Members of the board are listed below. • Legislator Joseph Lorigo (Town of West Seneca) • Legislator Betty Jean Grant (Buffalo) • Legislator Patrick Burke
