Legislators request additional information from library director Erie County Legislators Joseph Lorigo and Edward Rath sent a letter to Buffalo and Erie County Public Library Director Mary Jean Jakubowski requesting additional information pertaining to an audit by the comptroller’s office that showed nearly half a million dollars was spent lobbying for a special library tax district. The Erie County Legislature’s Community Enrichment Committee discussed the Audit of the Buffalo & EC Public Library for the Period Jan. 2011 to Dec. 2013 at its Oct. 23 meeting. As a result, several serious questions were raised and additional information has been requested to further look into the matter. Jakubowski agreed during the committee meeting to provide all requested information. “I still have many concerns surrounding this wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars. I’m also unhappy with the conduct of the library director and her dealings with a lobbyist. Ms. Jakubowski knew that a special taxing district was unlikely to come to fruition, yet continued to spend taxpayer dollars on her effort. The audit also revealed very questionable political activity. I would like to review the information that has been requested in order to fully vet the issue,” said Major-

ity Leader Joseph Lorigo, who is a member of the Community Enrichment Committee. In the letter sent to Jakubowski on Oct. 27, the Legislators requested the following information be submitted by Nov. 4: • All email communications between the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library and Communications Services since the inception of the working agreement between the two parties in 2011 until present; and • Level of Library Foundation money spent on the LDI in addition to the tax payer funds we discussed last week; and • The contract between Whiteman, Osterman, & Hanna LLP and the Library; and • All billing statements from Whiteman, Osterman, & Hanna LLP including the time sheets provided by the law firm detailing what work they accomplished during their representation of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library. “During the Community Enrichment committee meeting my colleagues and I posed critical questions to the Library Director concerning the $323,000 spent on an Albany law firm. We believe that this cost is extremely excessive, primarily because they were asked to complete a relatively rou-
tine task. Taxing districts have been set up for sewers, lighting, etc. throughout the county. Hiring an out-of-town law firm for this purpose, at this price tag is very alarming. We will continue our review of this issue by studying the bills and what outcomes were generated for this contract,” said Legislator Rath. At the Legislature’s request, the comptroller’s office conducted the audit, which reviewed a three-year period. The findings revealed how much money was spent by the library in its efforts to push for the creation of a special library taxing district. The audit reported that expenses were more than $422,777, comprised of consulting fees and personal expenses paid to an Albany lobbyist, as well as legal fees to an Albany law firm. The money for these lobbyists and lawyers came directly from the library’s taxpayer funded operating budget. Prior to its completion, the library was made aware that the county executive, legislature and other elected officials critical to the process did not support the creation of a special taxing district. However, the library director and board of trustees continued to push their agenda and incurred these exorbitant costs.

St. Mary’s, St. Bonaventure’s form partnership By Sallie Moppert
THE LANCASTER SUN REPORTER
Two local Western New York institutions have recently joined forces to help give students more opportunities for college. On Wednesday, Oct. 22, St. Mary’s High School and St. Bonaventure University signed a Memorandum of Understanding during a signing ceremony in the new Marian Conference Center at St. Mary’s High School in Lancaster. Mark Tramont, president of St. Mary’s High School, and Sister Margaret Carney, president of St. Bonaventure University, signed the memorandum and a few members of the students and staff attended the ceremony. “We are very excited to be teaming with St. Bonaventure,” Tramont said. “We believe that our students and faculty will greatly benefit from all that St. Bonaventure has to offer. We know that St.
Bonaventure will be gaining quality students when our seniors enroll there.” The memorandum between the two institutions will include several opportunities for faculty and students. Several scholarship opportunities will be available at St. Bonaventure for St. Mary’s students who enroll in the university, including the prestigious Pope Francis Leadership Scholarship. St. Bonaventure will also host a yearly visit to St. Mary’s to meet with juniors and seniors. The yearly visit will include a campus tour and a presentation by staff members and faculty. BPO kids concert a hit
On Sunday, Oct. 26 the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) performed the first of this season’s BPO kids concerts. Young witches, vampires, and goblins came to hear a concert of spooky music including selections from the movie Harry Potter. In conjunction with the concert, Twin Village Music hosted an Instrument Petting Zoo before the concert in the Kleinhans Music Hall Mary Seaton Room. Hundreds of children had the opportunity to try out flutes, saxes, trumpets, trombones, violins, drums and many more musical instruments. This interactive opportunity allowed the children to learn how each instrument works while their parents looked on.

Lancaster’s Romano sets new Section VI backstroke bar By William Wilczewski SPORTS REPORTER
She’s been swimming since she was knee-high to her current self. As a sophomore at Lancaster High, she’s also already shoehorned in a full prep pool career, having been on the varsity squad since the seventh grade. All that considered, no one was even close to being surprised when Lady Redskin Kristen Romano broke the Section VI 100-meter backstroke record — plus won the event — at the ECIC Girls Swimming and Diving Championships on Oct. 25. The surprise, however, came in Romano’s time of 55.99 seconds — a mark that other swimmers at the meet matched, but — for example — in the 100-meter freestyle event, which typically has faster times due to the nature of the stroke. Swimming, though, obviously comes more natural to Romano than most athletes her age—but that doesn’t mean it didn’t take a lot of hard work and dedication to top the old record of 56.45 set by Orchard Park’s Andrea Lehner. “I knew going into it that I had a chance to break it, but I’d never really made that my main focus,” the 15-year-old said. “My main focus was to just go in there and do just the little things right; the flip-turns and the underwaters and the starts; do those little things correctly and not even go for a time, just swim technically sound races.” And that’s exactly what Romano did, because she also won the 200 individual medley that day.
Again—no surprise, because the youngster is the defending Section VI champ in the 100 back, and was state runner-up in the event last season as a freshman, plus was fifth in 200 IM at state in 2013. “Alot of the training that I’ve been doing for the backstroke has been based off of that runner-up at states, because it was just by milliseconds,” she explained, “and that just fueled my training over the past year; just thinking of that race, and how as a freshman I could’ve been a state champion, but she just nicked me out.” She was Emma Hadley from downstate near Long Island, according to Romano, who looks forward to facing her state foe again in the near future. “I keep her in mind every time I train,” said Romano, whose brother also swam and followed a similar path. She credits him for much of her own success. But aside from that success, Romano says it’s the swimming fraternity that she enjoys most. “We still have traditions from my first year,” she explained. ”We’re a family; most definitely.” That family also includes fellow Lady Redskin standout Marissa DiRienzo, a 17-yearold senior, who has verbally committed to apply her strokes for Canisius College next season. “It is a very big accomplishment to even be under a minute in the backstroke,” said DiRienzo of her teammate’s feat. “It is very difficult. You have to have that mindset. Plus it takes training … and hard work to get to that point.” That’s where both DiRienzo and Romano help each other— having swam together most of their young lives. “We have a really great dynamic,” said DiRienzo, who fell ill on finals day of the ECIC
WILLIAM WILCZEWSKI
Lancaster swimmer Kristen Romano’s time of 55.99 seconds in the 100-meter backstroke event Oct. 25 set a new Section VI record. meet. “Every time we get in the pool together we just push each other … and we work off each other. It’s just a give-and-take with us. We build off each other. For the two of us, it’s us against the world.” DiRienzo’s world, however, will evolve to the college level next season. She plans to study political science, and perhaps law school after that. For now, though, she remains focused on the now. “I’ve got some things to do here first, before I can get there,” she said on Oct. 31, with the echoes and splish-splashes permeating in the background at the Redskin swim facility. “We’re here to leave a legacy and protect the tradition of Lancaster swimming.” That legacy and tradition entered yet another phase in the past few days when the dynamic duo and the rest of theier young squad competed at Erie Community College Nov. 6-7 at the Section VI
championships. State is also scheduled in Ithaca Nov. 20-21—dates that Lancaster head swim coach Mark Ayers has had highlighted on his calendar now for a while. He, too, is not surprised what Romano has accomplished so far, and he’s sure it’s just the tiny tip on a Titanic-sized iceberg. “Not much of a surprise,” he said when asked about Romano’s record-breaking performance. “Kristen’s been swimming out of her mind all year, even when she’s beat up. She wasn’t rested for this last meet at ECIC, but still I wasn’t shocked; happy, but still not satisfied yet. “We still have a lot more to go, and she has a lot more time to drop,” he added, “and it’s not going to be surprising if she breaks a lot more records.” Those just may come in the 200 IM, the 100 and 200 back, 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly— all events that the sophomore
sensation has on her dance card. “We train to swim all these different events,” she said. “I mean, we never do the same stroke at practice. Swimming them all in one meet, though; it can be kind of difficult to go from one to another because they’re completely different … but we train for these over and over again.” With those kind of demands, another not-so-surprising part of Romano’s regiment is working with a personal trainer—because hitting national times and Olympic trials is also something that dances through her head at night when she slumbers. “There’s a certain amount that you’re kind of expected to do, so that you can get to that next level,” she said. “Being best friends with Marissa, though, I know how quickly (high school) goes, so I have to cherish every moment; reflect on what I’ve learned and am still learning here.”
DiRienzo, who has a 3.85 GPA, has already been down that road, and has learned one thing: dedication—in the pool and in the classroom—is the secret to staying on track. “In order to get to that level, that’s what you gotta do,” the future Lady Griffin said, “because swimming is one part of this, but the academics is really important to us … then maybe you can fit in some social events … but that’s just what you have to do.” For the pair, that means not as many—if any—parties and just ‘hangin’ out with friends,’ like their peers. “We have to make sacrifices for the sport that we love,” DiRienzo said. “It just comes with the territory.” What also came with the territory Oct. 25 at the ECIC championships was Romano being part of the 4x100 freestyle relay team that took third place—which wasn’t too shabby considering there were two eighth-graders and another sophomore in the foursome. As for his two studs, though, Ayers—a 27-year-old who swam for Williamsville North and the University at Buffalo— summed up the duo like this: “She has a shot in whatever she wants to,” he said of Romano. She can do anything. The sky’s the limit with her. “She’s got a great work ethic,” he added about DiRienzo. “She’s driven and very committed.” And with two leaders like that, it’s no wonder the Lancaster High girls swim team finished fourth in the ECIC in large schools in dual meets this season. At the championships, the squad dipped to eighth place—largely due to DiRienzo’s illness—while Clarence took top honors. “That was a little disappointing,” Ayers said, “but we’ll be back.”

Painting with a Twist to host charitable event Nov. 11 By Amy Robb
THE LANCASTER SUN REPORTER
Painting with a Twist (PWAT), located at 6363 Transit Road in Lancaster, will be hosting a charity event to benefit Special Operations Warrior Foundation. PWAT is a national franchise with its roots in charity, with monthly events called Painting with a Purpose. On Tuesday, Nov. 11, painting locations across the nation will be hosting the same event, more than 100, with proceeds going to different organizations depending on region. At least 50 percent of the night’s proceeds will go to the foundation picked. “It’s humbling to be able to do that to be able to impact people in the community. It’s a privilege,” said Lisa Scibetta, co-owner for the Lancaster location. So far, the Painting with a Purpose Program has raised nearly $1 million for local non-profit organizations.
This Veteran’s Day marks the first time the company will come together on the same day to show its support for a national cause. Through the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, children of special operations personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty receive financial assistance for a post-secondary education, along with educational and family counseling. Special operations members who are severely wounded and hospitalized also get financial assistance. Units assigned to the U.S. Special Operations are comprised of almost 70,000 Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, both active and reserve. “We are proud to join this system-wide Painting with a Purpose event benefitting the Special Operations Warrior Foundation” said Mary Grupka, co-owner for the Lancaster location. “It is a great way to honor those who have served our country and their families.”
Come out to support a good cause, while coming together as friends and family, and a community. Wine and other alcoholic beverages are allowed, but anything left over must be left on site. The studio provides canvases, paint, and brushes, and local art instructors will guide you every step of the way while creating your painting. With more than 4,000 original pieces of copyrighted artwork, it’s easy to find the right one that speaks to you. Paintings include landscapes, abstracts, cityscapes, florals, and innovative reworkings or iconic buildings and animals. Guests are encouraged to visit paintingwithatwist. com/buffalo/ or call 3911956 to sign up for the Veteran’s Day Painting with a Purpose class, or just to learn more about the franchise. It’s $35 a seat, and “Amber Waves of Grain,” a patriotic scene, will be painted during the event.
