Owner of Totally Tools Mark Golba. By Jennifer Lysiak

THE LANCASTER SUN EDITOR

Local business owner Mark Golba knows the importance of having the right “tools” in place to see his business succeed. Owner of Totally Tools, in Depew, Golba has been in business for 15 years and while he has faced and overcome several challenges throughout the years, he continues to grow his business, which now includes a small engine repair and parts shop.

At the age of 16, Golba started selling tools as a hobby with his dad, Ron, at the former Walden Flea Market. “I always liked working with tools, working on muscle cars, and one thing lead to another and [my dad and I] started buying and selling them,” said Golba. “It’s just been a passion all my life, not just for me, but for dad too.” In fact, before the start of Totally Tools, Golba and his dad would go on the road to car shows and swap meets to such places as Carlisle, Pa.,

where they set up and displayed tools to sell. Golba then decided to attend college, studying automotive repair. When he finished college, he worked at Holiday Olds, a former car dealership, for 15 years as a car mechanic. “I always did the tools as a hobby and when the dealership closed down, I decided to give selling and repairing tools a try,” said Golba.

See “Tools” page 2

Golba added he had enough money to sustain the business for the first five years and he was hoping the business would thrive, and considering it’s now 15 years later and he is still selling new and used tools and repairing air tools, it certainly has. “The first five years, ‘you’re asking yourself what am I doing?’” he laughed. Also, Golba’s dad, who is now retired, still helps out

tool is not available for purchase at the store, Golba said they can order it. For those who would like to sell their twools, just bring them by the store, and Golba will buy it, if it’s something of interest. Golba said they also buy out estates and garages so whatever is in an estate they will bring to the store to sell. “We try to keep the nicer stuff in the store. We specialize in the tool end, but

even though he lives in Florida. Roni Sue Stasaitis, a close friend that helps at the store, said he goes around in Florida to estate sales and flea markets and buys tools such as Craftman Tools, Snap On Tools, Mac Tools, and sends Golba boxes and boxes of really high quality new and used tools to help out. The store is filled with brand name tools and if a

other stuff does come in,” said Golba, when asked about the vintage bicycles displayed at the store. Stasaitis added that currently the inventory in the store offers more newer items, and it’s not so much used items anymore. Also there is more of a selection offered than Golba has ever had in the last two to three years. In addition, Totally Tools also offers tool rental such as generators or rototillers. “It’s just a tool business that’s been family owned and operated, and even our friends are family,” remarked Golba. “We all work together to help each other out and that’s why it has gotten to where it is today, [plus] the long days and a lot of hard work.” “All the schooling that the dealership sent me to about the customer being No. 1 has paid off for me,” he added. And it certainly has because about eight months ago a new opportunity arose for Golba.

The business located next door, Depew Small Engine, relocated and it was a chance for his business to expand. “One thing lead to another and next thing you know we are fixing snowblowers, lawnmowers, and chainsaws,” said Golba. “It’s service, sales, and repairs of all small engines,” which also includes power washers, weed whackers and more. Free estimates are offered as well as a pick up and delivery service. Stasaitis added getting repairs back to customers in less than a week is their No. 1 goal. “So that’s something new people are really excited about,” said Stasaitis, adding that small engine repair is really limited in the area. “There’s not that many around anymore. It’s something that is really needed by the community, a quality repair shop that’s close to home.”

Stasaitis added that Golba has a reputation of being an honest business person, which keeps his customers coming back. “He’s very honest, keeps his word, and that’s what is making the small engine side of the business so successful,” remarked Stasaitis. “People are getting quality, fast service and they don’t have to worry that they are getting stuff done that they don’t need to get done, which is big.” Totally Tools, located at 3290 Walden Ave., in Depew, is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Saturday. The Buffalo Zoo announced on Dec. 15, the name of a baby giraffe who was born in October. His name is Sampson. Sampson was born on Friday, Oct. 24, to mother, 5-year-old A.J, and father, 3-year-old Moke. Both are first time parents. The day was a special one for giraffe keeper, Vicki Hodge. Oct. 24 is her grandparents’ wedding anniversary, and also the anniversary of the death of her grandfather, whose middle name was Sampson. She named the baby in memory of him. The name announcement coincides with a series of billboards that were unveiled around the Buffalo area the same day, revealing Sampson’s name to the community. Community Papers of WNY, LLC and LAMAR Outdoor Advertising provided the billboards, “A New Baby, A New Year”. CPOWNY will roll out a year of family-friendly activities and promotions on and off Zoo grounds throughout 2015. Show your support by ‘Caroling for Canines’ By Sallie Moppert

THE LANCASTER SUN CORRESPONDENT

As the holidays creep closer, the radio stations are filled with Christmas carols. Local business Canine & Company will be joining into the caroling fun with a unique twist on the holiday tradition that carolers, singers and animal lovers alike will enjoy. The business will be Caroling for Canines from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 at the Tops Market located at 6363 Transit Road in Depew. The annual caroling event will not only serve as a fun way to spread holiday cheer and have some fun during the holiday season, but will also be a way to collect donations for local rescue organizations that are in need. “We were looking for a fun holiday way to raise money and collect donations for local rescue organizations,” explained Canine & Company Manager Colleen Donovan. This is the fourth year that

Caroling for Canines has been held. Each year, Canine & Company also collects donations and items during the event which will be given to a local rescue organization that helps animals in need. This year, the money and items that are donated during the event will be going to the Akron Canine Rescued Angels organization. Canine & Company is looking for donations of any kind, including items such as dog toys, beds, treats, food and other supplies for dogs, as well as monetary donations. The business is aiming to raise more money than the previous year, which achieved a total of about $300. Any and all donations will be accepted and are appreciated to assist the Akron Canine Rescued Angels organization. The public is also invited to join the Canine & Company employees in singing holiday songs. The employees will be wearing their Santa hats to add to the festivities and

holiday spirit. For those who may not want to sing with the Canine & Company crew, they are welcome to stay and watch the show as well as just offer their support for the singers and the organization in general. “Everyone is going to really enjoy our terrible singing,” Donovan joked. “It’s fun to watch us stand outside of a grocery store and sing badly. But it is a lot of fun and a great event for the holidays and also goes for a great cause to help out some of our local rescue organizations.” Canine & Company is a locally owned and operated business that offers doggy daycare, lodging and grooming. The organization is located at 5952 Transit Road in Depew. For more information, contact Canine & Company at 681-0063 or visit www. canineandcompany.com.

Funding approved for Buffalo City Mission’s new center

Erie County Legislature Chairman John Mills announces that the Legislature has approved additional funding for the Buffalo City Mission in the 2015 Erie County budget. The Legislature approved $50,000 at today’s annual Budget Meeting to support the Mission’s efforts to build a new $27 million center and expand its services. “The Legislature supports the Buffalo City Mission’s goal of building a larger center to serve those in need. The Mission has a long history of serving our community and we are grateful for

the staff and volunteers’ efforts,” said Chairman Mills. “ “We are truly thankful to hear that the Erie County legislature approved additional funding for the Mission’s building expansion,: said, Stuart Harper, Executive Director, Buffalo City Mission. “The expanded site will allow the Mission to implement innovate, long term programming that has been proven to decrease homelessness.” The budgetary process allows the County Executive to veto spending increases made by the Legislature,

which then votes to override or accept the veto. Legislators urge the County Executive to withhold his veto power and allow this important funding in next year’s budget. It is important to note that the funding was added into the 2015 budget without raising the bottom line, in fact the Legislature lowered the property tax rate. The Legislators encourage the County Executive to support the funding. For information or assistance, please contact Legislator Mills’ Legislative Offi ce at 858-885o.

ECC makes it six straight at national Mastercam competition For the past five years, students of Erie Community College’s celebrated industrial technology program have enjoyed fall seasons full of awards on the national stage of Mastercam’s Wildest Parts design competition. This year, they continued what has now become an annual tradition of industrial design domination. In a field open to students from over 74,800 schools around the country, ECC’s Michael Manzella notched second place and Paul Gojmerac added third place honors as the college’s participants once again mastered the decades-old contest’s postsecondary division. This is the sixth year in a row that an ECC student has been awarded either first, second or third place in the event, which challenges students enrolled in Mastercam courses to create a unique, original design using Mastercam software. Williamsville native Manzella earned his honor for “Reel,” a large and complicated titanium fly reel which featured expert milling, tight tolerances and an impressive attention to detail. Kenmore resident Gojmerac’s waterjet-created “Sextant” not

only combined artistic and utilitarian qualities sought after by contest judges, but also exhibited an impressive level of ambition from the ECC student. According to Mastercam judges, “(Gojmerac) gained a much better understanding of the process of taking a concept through all of the steps necessary to become a finished product. The end result was a great learning experience and an attractive and functional part.” This victory is simply the latest victory for an ECC Industrial Technology Program that is leading the way in Western New York advanced manufacturing by providing trained graduates to answer the region’s dire need for skilled laborers, manufacturers and technicians. Its enrollment has surged over the past nine years and, thanks in part to the college’s $926,922 received through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grants Program (TAACCCT) in 2012, is now utilizing state-of-the-art training labs and advanced equipment for students eager to enter the area’s expanding industry.

Students explore diversity during SEEK Week

During the week of Dec. 1 through Dec. 5, St. Mary’s High School observed SEEK Week. Named for the SEEK (Students Exercising Equity & Knowledge) Club at St. Mary’s, the week and the organization are designed to allow all members of the school to realize and appreciate that everyone is different and the same in so many ways. The theme of the week was “Common Threads.” Throughout the week, members of SEEK offered a variety of activities to show these common threads, to display the contributions of various cultures. For example, photos of various sports from China were displayed, pictures from famous Irish painters were presented, a decade of the Rosary was said in Polish, famous Italian songs were played, and Shannon Murty, a St. Mary’s freshman, sang the

National Anthem of Ireland in Gaelic during all lunches. In addition, the cafeteria offered a menu with foods from different cultures, including Italian, Chinese, Polish, Irish, and African. SEEK Week concluded with an assembly featuring the African Drum Corps. The dancers and drummers offered a lively and entertaining performance demonstrating the music and dance of the African culture. “The members of SEEK were striving to show the many similarities people of different ethnicities share,” commented Cindy Powers, moderator of SEEK. “We used the theme ‘Common Threads’ to celebrate similarities such as food, the arts, faith, sports, and music. “I think the students especially enjoyed some of the different foods we experienced,” she con-

tinued, “but the highlight of the week was definitely the African Drum Corp and dancers. The students loved being involved in the dancing and listening to the drums! The experience brought about an awareness of the rich cultural heritage of Africa in an educational and fun way.” Student members of SEEK felt that the week was a great way for students to examine the world outside of their “comfort zone.” “I think the students learned a lot more about the world other than their own personal background,” said Hannah Gresham, a member of the SEEK club. “I thought the week was an awesome way for the students to connect with people from cultures around the world,” added fellow SEEK member Gillian Sacco. “I think the

Local sports Lady Wildcats snap three-game skid with 42-39 victory over visiting Maryvale

By William ‘Ski’ Wilczewski SPORTS REPORTER

The Depew High girls basketball team started the season strong with two straight victories in the West Seneca Tournament in the first week of December. The second week of the month didn’t go so well with three

straight losses to Tonawanda, Cleve Hill and East Aurora. Instead of slumping and falling apart, though, the young squad showed some moxie to begin the third week of the month when it upped its record to 3-3 by outlasting visiting Maryvale 42-39 on Monday, Dec. 15 in their home gym. “It feels good. They played extremely hard,” Lady Wildcat skipper Charlie Guay said. “They didn’t give up and hung in there … and at the end there, they felt it and they did it. You

can’t ask for anything more. The desire out there was unbelievable.” That desire was evident after Maryvale’s Unique Walker tied things up at 27 inside the first minute of the fourth quarter; moments before Depew’s Mikayla Hyman put her team back up again with a three-pointer. Maryvale still didn’t go away, though, and took a 33-32 edge with less than two minute to go on the regulation clock on a pair of Walker free throws. But it would be the Lady Flyers’ final lead of the contest because Depew seniors Idalis Santiago and Sarah Federowicz took control when they needed to by making a couple key baskets down the stretch. Maryvale’s Kelsey Cadwallader tried her best to mount a comeback, but her three-pointer with 23 seconds left in regulation wasn’t enough to keep Depew down. “Our young team shows it at times,” said Lady Flyers coach Tim Klimtzak, whose team dropped to 1-4. “They didn’t control the clock, and we lost by three because we ran out of time … so it’s those little things that are happening, but we played much better. “It was a more consistent game for us in this one,” he added, “and that’s what we’re looking to do. We’ll go through our growing pains but we’ve got to take small steps at a time.” Those steps will now include learning how to break a pressure defense—something that helped Depew all game, but especially in the early going when they held Maryvale to just a couple buckets in a 10-5 first quarter. “Our man-to-man defense was excellent the whole game,” Guay said. “A couple times

Depew’s Sarah Federowicz (right) keeps a steady eye on Maryvale’s Kelsey Cadwallader during a 42-39 victory on Monday, Dec. 15. we got picked and a couple times they got layups … but (Maryvale) got most of their points on rebounds, so it hurts without a big, but the other ones did all they could.” Guay was referring to super sophomoreTess Borgosz sitting out of the contest because of concussion protocol. She was expected to have returned to action by now, but in her absence on Dec. 15, Klimtzak thought his team might have the edge, but it just didn’t pan out that way. “I thought we were going to be able to take advantage of it,” he said. “We got the ball inside and capitalized a little bit, but they just started doubling, so it

was all about adjustments; that’s how it goes. “Depew did pressure us all game,” he added, “and they did a great job with a short bench, so give them credit.” Much of the offensive credit goes to Santiago and sophomore Brianna Dotterweich, who each had a game-high 12 points on the night. Cadwallader led Maryvale with 10. “But what was key for us was just working together as a team,” Dotterweich said, “and not getting flustered so much, like we did in our past three games.” “They played with poise, and they played with heart, too,” Guya added. “I mean, the skill-

level’s not there, but they played with heart and that makes a big difference.” That heart was slated to be tested again on Friday, Dec. 19 after press time when Depew was scheduled to host Oracle. Next up on the schedule for the Lady Wildcats is the Depew Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27 and 29. Game times on the first day are scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m., while tip-offs are set for 6 and 7:30 p.m., on day two. Maryvale, on the other hand, was slated to host rival Cheektowaga on Thursday, Dec. 18 before a holiday break that sees them return to action on Jan. 6 at Amherst at 7:30 p.m.

Top 3 strong but B team must develop for Wildcat rollers By William ‘Ski’ Wilczewski SPORTS REPORTER

Every single pin is going to count this season. That’s the mantra, anyway, of the Depew High boys bowling team, which already began its 2014-15 prep campaign with a pair of losses—one to always tough Cheektowaga and the other to a surprisingly aggressive Cleveland Hill squad. In traditionally successful fashion, though, the Wildcats rebounded with a 7-0 win on Wednesday, Dec. 10 when they hosted JFK at Broadway Sports Center in Cheektowaga. Traditional end-of-theseason success won’t come easy this time around, though, for Depew, which lost a few high-average bowlers from a year ago in graduates Chris Carneski

and Dan Foley. “When you lose someone like (Carneski), that’s a big element off your team,” fourth-year Wildcat skipper Steve Kolbert said, “so now you got a guy that averaged 220-215 and you’re replacing him with a 150, so you lose 70 pins there.” Foley also averaged a 180-185 a year ago, and will be replaced by yet another 150 or so roller, which takes away another 30 pins, “So we got a month and half to get all our guys up to 185-190,” Kolbert said. “That’s what you’re looking for … but we have potential.” And that potential is seriously front heavy in senior Cody Cammarata, plus juniors Joe Scapillato and Griffin Garcia—all who boast a 200 or better average. In fact, just two matches in and Scapillato was looking at a 230 average after bowling a pair of 300 in the offseason. He also nailed the front 10 in this season’s opener “then through a good ball, but it

Depew downed JFK 7-0 on Dec. 10. didn’t carry, so I shot a 286 the first game of the year,” he explained, adding that his high mark prior to that was 279. As for this prep season, though, “It’s difficult to replace good bowlers,” Scapillato said of his former teammates. “They

were key bowlers at tournaments, so with these younger kids, what we got to do is keep working with them and hopefully they’ll come through for us at these big tournaments and key matches.” “We’re trying to take the younger players and build

them up to our level,” Cammarata added, “get them built up and ready for when we leave, so they can prepare for later on.” And if the second-year captain, who had one of the top five averages in Class B last season, were to give any words of advice to help his younger comrades, they would be simple—as in: practice, practice, practice. “Because the practice and traveling to different houses just helps you adjust to the different lane conditions,” he explained, “and how they’re going to react in play.” Those reactions will be key this season if Depew stands a chance of once again battling for top honors with Cheektowaga and Tonawanda, plus slowlysimmering powers like Cleve Hill and Alden. Last season—with a more high-powered squad—the Wildcats took third in Section VI, Class B, but realize that after their slow start this year, it might be a

challenge to get back there this year. “It’s not an easy division for bowling, for sure,” Kolbert said, “but as our B team develops, hopefully we start to win those matches. “I mean, we have a strong A team,” he added, “so now we just need those others kids because when you go to qualify (for states), you need to have a 190 (average) as your goal.” The next chance the Wildcats got to work on that goal was Monday, Dec. 15, when they were slated to travel to Alden to test themselves against the host Bulldogs at 4 p.m. Depew—which took ninth at the season-opening Maryvale Booster Club Tournament at Airport Lanes in Cheektowaga on Dec. 1—is also scheduled to participate in the Festival of Lights Tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 30, before resuming their regular season by hosting Iroquois at 4 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

COLUMN: Depew youth learning valuable lessons already topping Maryvale’s Lady By William ‘Ski’ Wilczewski Flyers in a game they could SPORTS REPORTER have easily lost. They had an excuse with With five sophomores super sophomore Tess Borand just three seniors on gosz out of the lineup an eight-person roster, the because of concussion proDepew High girls basketball tocol, but they didn’t use it. Instead, they battled on team has already learned and used teamwork to get some valuable lessons and the W against a squad that shown some maturity this just wouldn’t go away. season. The one-two punch of That was evident on Monday, Dec. 15 when the Lady senior Idalis Santiago and Wildcats recovered from a sophomore Brianna Dotthree-game losing streak by terweich made sure of that

when the pair combined 24 of the club’s 42 points on offense, while a high-pressure defense held Maryvale to 39—including single-digit quarters in the first half. “Our man-to-man defense was excellent the whole game,” Depew head coach Charlie Guay said after the contest. “A couple times we got picked and a couple times they got layups … but (Maryvale) got most of their points on rebounds, so it hurts without a big, but

the other ones did all they could.” And it was just enough to get them into the black again. It also may have been just enough to help the girls realize they can overcome any obstacle, no matter how big or small it is—and that stands to go a long way with this core group having more than two seasons to mature and grow together as a unit. That concept was certainly not lost on Dotterweich,

who matched Santiago with a game-high 12 points against Maryvale. “But what was key for us was just working together as a team,” the 5-foot-3 guard said, “and not getting flustered so much, like we did in our past three games.” Now, the Lady Wildcats will have to take that same mentality into their holiday tournament, which is scheduled for Dec. 27 and 29. More importantly, though, they’ll have to take into the

second half of the regular season when it resumes on Tuesday, Jan. 6 against visiting Springville. The bad news, is that game—like most others this season—won’t be an easy one. The good news, like I said, though, is that the Depew High girls basketball team has learned some valuable lessons so far … and that should only continue as the season—and their high school careers—go on.

Dr. Gale Burstein, MD, MPH, FAAP, was recognized recently for her work on preventing and treating Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), as the Erie County Department of Health Commissioner. Her work specifically with adolescents has made a huge impact in the Western New York community, bringing awareness and knowledge to those just coming into adolescence with questions that need answering. As a Board Certified Adolescent Medicine Physician, Dr. Burstein feels that sexual health is just as important as any other aspect addressed with primary care providers. The majority of her work has focused on making sexual health awareness and services available in a pri-

mary care setting, starting out with a private questionnaire for adolescents coming in, to providing confidential STD treatment should it be needed. “Traditionally, pediatricians didn’t provide sexual health services, but 50 percent of high school students, especially in the city of Buffalo, are sexually active. It’s important to provide them with services to keep them healthy,” said Dr. Burstein. Providing primary doctors with the right tools and strategies can greatly reduce teenage pregnancies and the spread of STDs. It’s better for kids to get the right information on sexual health from a trusted source like a healthcare provider, or a parent, than a peer or through a questionable media outlet. Burstein urges parents to breach the subject with their teen, even if he or she is uncomfortable talking

about it. “Even if [parents] think their kids won’t want to have this conversation, they need to initiate it. Parents can be good resources and advocates for their kids, reaching out and starting a conversation, because usually kids won’t start that conversation,” remarked Dr. Burstein. It’s a good open philosophy, one that will bring parents closer with their teens, and make for a healthier community overall. In addition to making information and services available at primary care providers and asking for an open mind from parents, Dr. Burstein also stresses that a big obstacle to overcome is the stigma surrounding sexuality. It’s not just a community problem, but more of a nationwide problem, often perpetuated by certain institutions presenting it as taboo. “We are sexual beings and that’s an important part of our lives, and we have to normalize it, normalize the conversation so we can make informed de-

cisions, and lead a healthy life,” added Burstein. Dr. Burstein is also a clinical professor at the U n i v e r s i t y a t B u ff a l o School of Medicine and Biomedical Services, and acts as adolescent committee chair for the New York Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. For more information on sexual health and STD awareness, visit the New York State Department of Health website: health. ny.gov/diseases/communicable/std/. The Erie County Department of Health provides free, confidential screening for HIV at their walk-in Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic at 608 William St., Buffalo. Veterans One-stop provides vital assistance to former military personnel in transition, including career counseling and job placement. “We owe so much to our servicemen and women,” said Jacobs. “This is another opportunity during the holiday season for us to thank the veteran community for their service.” Last year the program was extremely successful and provided more than
