Anderson’s hosts toy drive

A holiday Toy Drive will be sponsored by Anderson’s Frozen Custard from Nov. 1 to Dec. 8. Donations of new toys for ages 12 and under will be accepted at six area Anderson’s locations. Toys will be donated to Western New York Heroes who will distribute to families of local veterans. Starting Nov. 1, donations will be accepted at the following Anderson’s locations: •2369 Niagara Falls Boulevard, West Amherst •2235 Sheridan Dr., Kenmore •6075 Main St., Williamsville •3724 Union Rd., Cheektowaga •2634 Delaware Ave., Buffalo •4855 Transit Rd., Lancaster

As a small token of appreciation for their support, donors will receive an Anderson’s Dessert Dollar Certificate for each new toy they donate. This holiday Toy Drive was founded by Michaela Kowalick in 2007. A student at Niagara University and an employee of Anderson’s at the Boulevard location, Kowalick has encouraged her neighborhood to participate in the donation of gifts to give back to local charities. Donations have helped children through the Saint Christopher Parish Outreach Program, Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, Haven House of Buffalo and WNY Heroes. Throughout the past seven years, thousands of gifts have been delivered to local children for the holi-

days. This year, Kowalick has paired with Anderson’s to expand her neighborhood collection into a huge event. She hopes to have mountains of toys to deliver by the Dec. 8 deadline. No one wants to have a child feel left out during the holiday season. Now is your chance to give back to your community and our hometown heroes. The mission of WNY Heroes is to provide veterans, members of the armed services, and the widows and children of deceased veterans with access to essential services, financial assistance and resources that support their lives and sustain their dignity. For more information about Western New York Heroes, visit www.wnyheroes.org.

Sophomore Birzon guides Flames to sectional championship By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER

The Williamsville East girls soccer team recently captured the Section VI Class A championship, and it was truly a team effort. Players such as senior captain Melinda Tiao, freshman forward Erica Martinsen and goalkeeper Juliana Panepento all played crucial roles in helping the team advance to the Far West Regionals. But without the contributions of one player in particular — sophomore captain Marissa Birzon — it’s likely that the Flames wouldn’t have been as successful as they

have been in 2014. “Marissa’s our best player, and she’s one of the best players that I’ve ever coached,“ Flames coach Chris Durr said. “She’s a tremendous leader and she really embodies everything that you would want in a soccer player, because she combines her work ethic with great skill, and she always puts the team ahead of herself.” Birzon first joined the Flames’ roster in the fall of 2012 as an eighth-grader, and immediately began to contribute. She finished second in on the team in scoring with 11 goals and 33 points and helped the Flames reach the Class A title game, but Durr and Birzon both said that most of her productivity was the result of using her speed to her advantage. “When she first made the roster, Marissa just relied a lot on her speed and sheer deter-

mination to get by,” Durr said. “Since then, she’s developed into a player that can apply a lot more to a game than just speed, especially with her shooting and passing skills.” Birzon’s statistics improved as a freshman to 13 goals and 34 points, which led the team in scoring. She also helped lead the Flames to a second straight appearance in the Class A title game, but fell short of victory again. Even so, her continued improvement started to catch the eye of her teammates, most notably Tiao. “When Marissa first joined varsity, I knew that she was going to be a great soccer player just because of the fact that she made the roster as an eighth-grader. That’s hard to do for anyone,” Tiao said. “But I also found out that she’s an awesome person. She cares

DAVE ECKHARDT

Marissa Birzon had 37 goals and 86 points this season. about her teammates a lot, she’s tough and she’s a leader.” Her leadership skills and her hard work would both pay off during the 2014 season, as Birzon more than doubled her 2013 output with 37 goals and

86 points. She was also voted team captain by Durr and her peers. Her toughness would also be in full display during the postseason, as Birzon injured her ankle in the Class A semifinal against Amherst. Forced to wear a walking boot for the rest of the week, she played through the pain against Grand Island in the Class A final and scored both of the Flames’ goals to lead her team to victory. “When you’ve got a player like that, you want them to step up in big moments, and for her to gut it out and produce with an injury like that, that was tremendous,” Durr said. “That right there showed how tough she is, and it was a huge boost for us psychologically to have her out there.” “I just had to find a way to toughen it out, and our trainers did a great job of helping me

get back on the field,” Birzon added. “It hurt at some points during the game, and it still hurts now, but I needed to push through the pain to help my team win. To win a sectional title for the first time, it was worth it to play.” No matter how far the Flames go in the Section VI state playoffs, what has to be concerning for Birzon’s opponents is that she has two years left of varsity eligibility – which means she can only get better. “As good as she’s been as a sophomore, she still has a ton of upside and her future looks really bright here at Will. East,” Durr said. “If she stays healthy and continues to get better, there’s no telling what she could do. She has the potential to be one of the best soccer players that Western New York has ever produced.”

Will North, Sweet Home stand out at cross country sectionals By Aaron Garland WEST SENECA SUN SPORTS

Emilio Mancino’s vision for Sunshine Park, the home of his West Seneca West cross country program, to host Section VI Championships became reality Friday (Oct. 31). Elma Meadows Golf Course held the event almost exclusively for years and years. But Long Point State Park took it over in 2013 for the second time, and Sunshine, located on East and West Road in West Seneca, became the third host site in the state qualifying meet’s history. “From my perspective

I thought it went pretty smoothly,” said Mancino, who has coached West since 2002. “I really felt that the course was in as good of shape as we could possibly get it considering the conditions. Yes, it was muddy, but at least it didn’t rain. And it actually dried up pretty well considering the rain we did get in the days leading up.” It was a cloudy, yet relatively dry, Halloween, and the route at Sunshine met the approval of Brian Lasher, Will. North’s coach. He also thought the central location in Western New York made Sunshine an attractive race site. “It’s a nice area with a mix of woods and open grounds,” Lasher said.

“It’s a very fair course. In comparison to the other courses it’s a little flatter. We are excited to be here. It seemed like everything ran smoothly. Emilio does a really good job with preparation and I know that he really embraced the challenge of running the meet. I think this is great for the West Seneca community.” Lasher’s girls and boys teams both won Class A titles to earn trips to states. Colin Begley was the Spartans’ top male finisher (third, 16:34.40) while the girls were paced by Naomi Wistner (second, 18:52.80). With team victories on the girls’ side, Sweet Home (Class B), East Aurora (Class C) and Maple Grove

(Class D) also made states. EA’s Sophia Tasselmyer had the top time of the day among the girls, winning an individual Class C championship with an 18:37.40. Tasselmyer, a junior, claimed an individual title for Starpoint last year before transferring. Abbey Lang (Lockport, 18:45.10) was victorious in the A event while Aileen Doyle (Sweet Home, 18:42.40) and Hope Pietrocarlo (Maple Grove, 19:47.20) won sectional crowns in B and D, respectively. The EA boys also cruised to a team crown, placing all seven of its runners in the top 10. Kenny Vasbinder headed the Blue Devils,

running the fastest time of the day (15:49.00) en route to an individual sectional championship. Also in the boys field, Barker just beat out Maple Grove, 41-43, to claim the top team spot in Class D while Sweet Home won the Bs over second-place Hamburg. Niagara Falls’ Anthony Hawthorne (16:17.60) won an individual Class A championship while Mitchell Daddario (16:01.30) raced the fastest B time for Sweet Home. Clymer/Sherman/ Panama’s Josh Odell won a first-place patch in Class D with his 16:44.40. Overall, Lasher thinks with Sunshine following an irregular host in Long Point

last year, more debate may spark over changing the sectional site each season. There is always the want to compare year-to-year results, and performing at a singular place makes that simple, but he said he’s open to the discussion. “Other than that I think rotating the courses would be a good idea,” Lasher said. “Bring all the coaches together. Sometimes, I think, some input from more voices other than maybe our league representatives might be a good forum. Like a town hall meeting and we could talk in an open forum about the different courses — the plusses and everything else.” Twitter: @Garland_SUN

Billies beat Starpoint, earn overall Section VI Class A crown By Nick Sabato LOCKPORT STAR SPORTS

Sports can be fun, exhilarating and sometimes devastating. Sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way. That was exactly what happened as Williamsville South came back late in the second half to defeat Starpoint 2-1 in overtime to advance to the Far West Regionals on Saturday night (Nov. 1). The game was within Starpoint’s grasp as it scored to take a 1-0 lead with 13 minutes left, but a crucial call by the officials gave the Billies a corner kick

and Joe Malinowski buried a pass by Lucas Principle to tie it up with 4:45 to go. Once the game went to overtime, it was team captain and leading scorer Jordan Ackerman that was able to get the game-winner to stun the previously unbeaten Spartans. “It’s a tough way to lose it,” said Starpoint head coach Scott Bindemann. “Honestly I think we had five minutes left and we were going to win the game. That goal just went in and it’s a tough the way that we ended up getting a corner kick after they had called a goal kick but it is what is it is. The kids played great all season long and I’m super proud of them.” The Spartans are used to playing a fast-paced, wideopen style of play as they came in averaging nearly four goals per game but they were able to

show a lot of grit and toughness in defeat by being able to play a grind-it-out style of game. KJ Maldiner finally broke a scoreless tie 67 minutes into the game for his 20th goal of the season and it appeared as if Starpoint was in full control at that point but it was not to be on this night. “We scored first,” said Bindemann. “The game was there for us. Unfortunately something went in and we were scrambling at the end there.” While often a goalkeeper may only remember the final goal getting past him, Starpoint keeper Sam DelPrince was tremendous all night in the net. DelPrince came up with eight huge saves in the game, including one with 12 seconds to play in regulation to send the game into overtime. “He was definitely the star,”

said Bindemann. “He made some big saves, he was directing traffic out there, he did a great job and he’s done that all season long for us so I wasn’t surprised by it. He should really hold his head up high because he did a great job.” The Spartans enjoyed a record-setting season this year. They won Class A2 for the first sectional championship in school history after finishing towards the bottom of the section a season ago. Starpoint finishes the season 17-1-2, and its 19 consecutive games without a defeat is tied for ninth all-time in Section VI history. Williamsville South (162-1) will advance to play the Section V champion on Saturday (Nov. 8) at Hamburg High School with a start time of 7:30 p.m.

Will South girls spikers win sectionals Sweet Home, Will. East By Nick Sabato LOCKPORT STAR SPORTS

Last year, Starpoint caught lightning in a bottle by bringing home the Class B1 sectional championship after finishing the regular season with a losing record. This season, the Spartans came close, but lightning didn’t strike twice as the Lady Spartans fell to Williamsville South in the Class B1 title game 25-16, 25-13, 25-19 on Tuesday night (Nov. 4). Starpoint entered the contest as the sixth seed and had eight

players back from last year’s team, but the top-seeded Billies came out firing from the start to bring down the defending champs. In the first set, Williamsville South jumped out to a big lead. The Lady Spartans fought back to cut it in half, but they just couldn’t sustain the offense. The Billies would come out slow in the second set, and Starpoint led 8-7 at one point, but the top seed went on an 18-5 run to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the contest. “I think both teams had a bit of nerves right away,” said Williamsville South head coach Tom Sproull. “We had a few more unforced errors right away. They were a little juiced up, getting to the ball a little early, causing them to hit it deep. We had some more

hitting and serving errors than I would have liked but once they calmed down and just played their game and did what they needed to do.” South continued the run by scoring the first five points of the third set, and it seemed like Starpoint was stuck in quick sand that it couldn’t dig itself out of. Billies outside hitters Jessica Miller and Melissa Postek were dominant at the net all night, coming up with spike after spike that the Lady Spartans just couldn’t answer to. “Our two outsides or our right side when Jess Miller was in the front row,” said Sproull. “She would contribute a lot so we would move her all over the place. She hit on the outside and the right side. They are our go-to when we need them.”

While Williamsville South came in with the No. 1 seed in the section, Starpoint being the defending champion made them the favorite in many eyes, except the Billies. “We talked about really being the opposite,” said Sproull. “We felt like we were the favorite for a reason and we felt if we just played our game and did what have been doing all season long the results would take care of themselves. Starpoint is good, they’ve played us tough, and this is the third time that we have played them. They know us and we know them so we knew it was going to be a tough one. We were all playing our part.” Williamsville South took on Albion for the overall Class B championship on Thursday (Nov. 6). Results weren’t available at press time.
